“You know Mulder, it’s like you’re a profile ninja,” Agent Baker announces, speaking to both Mulder and a room full of FBI agents. He slaps Mulder hard on the back. The VCU had just wrapped another case, thanks to Mulder’s profile, but his mind had been elsewhere. After the one night stand he’d had a month ago he could not get Dana out of his mind. He thinks of her at least 30 times a day. 30 million times. Her smile, the conversations they had, the amazing sex. It was like they were destined to be together. He knew he was making a mistake walking out of her apartment that morning in May. He even went back to her place three weeks after their evening together, only to find out she had moved the week prior. There was something about her, something special, but Mulder couldn’t place his finger on it. He just knew it was starting to interfere with his–

“Earth to Mulder,” Baker clears his throat and looks at the other agents around the room. “Yo Mulder!” another agent hollers, tossing a balled up piece of paper in his direction..

“Apparently Mulder’s mind is elsewhere, maybe on another planet like those old files he started looking through last week,” Agent John pipes in. The guys in the room laugh. When Mulder realizes they are talking about him he joins in the chuckle and attempts to focus back on what his fellow agents are saying.

After Dana, Mulder fell into a slump. He had been trying to distract himself from her when he stumbled upon a bunch of dusty old files in the basement of the Hoover building. Once he started reading them he couldn’t get enough, but even the so-called x-files weren’t enough to keep his mind off of Dana and the night they shared together.

“How do you do it, Mulder? How do you seem to nail the profile each and every time?” Agent Baker asks, bringing his focus back to the room. Mulder swiftly shrugs his shoulders and replies, “I just try to get into the killer’s head. It’s not a place you want to be. It’s scary as hell but what’s the alternative?” The fellow agents nod again.

“What are those files you have been snooping through, what’s in them? Old profiles?” Rodgers asks.

“Something like that,” Mulder replies, not really wanting to divulge his recent reading material. He doubts his fellow agents would be interested in the files he had recently found, in paranormal phenomena. They were wild, mind blowing, and some out of this world, literally. The more he read, the more interested he became. But then his thoughts would undoubtedly turn to Dana again.

“We lost him again guys,” Baker says, smiling.

“Sorry all, my mind seems to be gone today,” Mulder says, smirking.

“It’s all good,” Baker reasures him. “Why don’t we call it a night team. We can meet tomorrow in our smaller units to debrief the case and get our next assignments.” The other agents stand up and began clearing the room. Mulder starts gathering his folders and makes to leave when a fellow agent, tall with brown hair, walks slowly towards him, blocking his path to the exit.

“I would love to hear more about those files from the basement.” Mulder looks into a pair of brown eyes. Reaching for the outstretched arm, Mulder grasps it and says, “I’m Fox Mulder.”

“Nice to meet you Fox Mulder, my name is Diana.”

hmm. mulder - harry ambrose parallels actually. i think there's something there. especially if you look at mulder and how he was with lucy householder from oubliette and harry with cora tanetti from season one. and how harry tells his soon to be ex wife, with exhausted bewilderment, i know you don't think i'm trying, but i'm trying so hard all the time.

and yknow. the guilt complex and masochistic tendencies. willingness to fling himself anywhere or lie buried in a box in the ground if it means he might get to the truth and a moment of connection.

my hand to God the episode where Mulder's ex-partner steals his notes and while his buddy is in the process of presenting Mulder's profile as his own and taking the credit and after like three sentences in the middle of the meeting Scully snaps her head round to Mulder because she knows. literally she's ON TO IT all outraged "THAT'S YOUR PROFILE!" literally completely unprompted I am telling you that is true love right there. I'd recognise your behavioral profile of a homicidal maniac anywhere anytime baby. Who was Chris Carter trying to fool anyway? smh.

All Time Favs

I began reading fanfic in my teens during the original run of the show. There were lonnng breaks from it, but coming back to the fandom in 2017 reignited my interest. I now keep a spreadsheet as well as a "to read" list. I already have almost 600 logged (not including 5 years), so I wanted to share my top favorites. Divided into my 4 favorite genres (AU, casefic, angst + romance, and smut + romance) and in no particular order...

I used to wonder why someone would choose to read AU. Then I read one of these and was completely blown away.

Katherine of Ireland by Jenna Tooms (gossamer)

Katherine, princess of Ireland is married to Walter, king of Angora. When Walter is killed during battle, Katherine is taken by the enemy, FitzJames. William is FitzJames right hand. When FitzJames orders her to be beaten (even after discovering her pregnancy) William devises a plan to save her, heal her and get her back to Ireland. Will William always be seen as the enemy or will Katherine come to see him for who he truly is?

One of the most xfiles like cases I have ever read. Remains unsolved at the end and has our agents investigating ghosts near Mulder’s hometown while dealing with their own (Emily & Teena).

Universal invariants/laws of motion by @syntax6

Scully is engaged to Ethan throughout the first season while her and Mulder’s relationship is deepening and then consummated right before she is abducted. How do two guys in love handle Scully’s abduction and what happens when she is returned?

All the way home/head over heels by @syntax6

Mulder is pulled into a past unsolved VCU case of a killer with a shoe fetish while navigating a new physical relationship with scully. When scully is targeted, Mulder has to gamble with his personal feelings while working to find the killer.

Queens gambit by Suzanne Schramm (gossamer)

Under Kersh, Mulder and Scully are assigned to a VCU case Mulder worked in Utah in 89’. The killer was put to death and then revenge began. Local mines and children involved.

This is my crux. Angst in any way, shape, or form. Add in some slow burn/ust and finally the rst *chefs kiss* particularly fond of Ethan fics and cancer arc.

thinking tonight about how much has been written over the past 30 years about the x files' subversion of gender roles, mulder as a 90s sci-fi hero who is the more emotional and open of the two, who cries on screen regularly, who is empathetic to a fault and deeply devoted to helping the vulnerable. scully as the rational one, the science brain, the person who is taken seriously. the unique view of a relationship to the paranormal and occultism, which, from its rise in the 1940s, was originally viewed as feminine and something irrational that women were comforted by. and how all of this is true and interesting but, to me, none of it is the biggest marker of gendered experiences in their characters.

at the end of the day, their characters both respond exactly as men and women in our society do, in the ways that they respond to violence.

mulder, in his mid-20s, started at the FBI working in the violent crimes division

where his profiling abilities, his way of being able to get into the mind of a killer, were revered

it's also where, in his words, he first saw monsters.

this show always deeply understood that the scariest monsters were not the vile creatures, they were violent men, and some of the most memorable villains on the show (john lee roche, luther boggs, john barnett) are resurfaced serial killers that mulder previously caught in his violent crimes days.

but mulder's background is in behavioral science, and he always wants to understand what makes someone how they are

and his positive worldview requires him to view every act of evil as the consequence of a larger cause, as not being senseless

which is why he wants to believe that men who are killing women are only doing so out of a biological imperative to survive

or out of a misguided attempt to SAVE them

meanwhile, scully is affected by the brutalization of women on an emotional level.

she hangs back at the crime scene and the police station to compose herself, while the men she's working with march up to a woman's desecrated corpse

she knows that even when mulder is right, even when the killer is acting out of a biological need for survival

that doesn't make it any better

because the impact on the women that he brutalized is more than physical, it's more than biological, it's more than any rational reasoning that he might have behind why he did it

she knows that it doesn't matter

and she doesn't need to try to understand. she doesn't need to know what the killer's reasoning is.

she already knows why men brutalize women

she's experienced it, she doesn't need to study it.
