I'm in awe of how we ran historical revisionism on the civil rights movement so bad that people truly believe it was quiet self-sacrifcial non-disruptive christ-like activism that forced progress and not — like — the incredible economic pressure of boycotts and outbreaks of illegal civil disobedience

When I was younger and researching the autism diagnosis criteria and symptoms, I thought “oh I couldn’t POSSIBLY be autistic.” Because when I read “takes everything literally” I thought it literally meant EVERYTHING and I was like “I don’t take EVERYTHING literally, just most things!” And I just realized the other day that it didn’t actually mean EVERYTHING and that was an overstatement.

colin saying “i would never dream of courting penelope featherington” doesn’t seem so mean spirited when i think of the context of their relationship.

it’s framed like he’s embarrassed of her but colin has never been embarrassed of pen! he compliments her, he writes to her, he values her presence in his life. i don’t get why people act like he’s some big bad villain for saying those things.

to me colin seemed like he was getting teased over his relationship with pen (he said those words after he danced with her) and was only trying to deflect accusations drawn at him because he sees pen as his sister or someone he would never consider in a non platonic light due to her relationship with el.

unfortunately i think he doesn’t realize the negative impact those words can have on impact on pen. she’s already struggling in the marriage market but a bridgerton saying they’d never court her basically ruins her chances even more given his position.

i feel like there’s a lot of nuances to consider. i do think his intentions weren’t meant to be hurtful but the way it looks can be seen so negatively and I get why pen is upset.

#i didn't even realize people thought he was being mean on purpose... like he's literally pen's biggest defender #tbh i assume he thinks that pen is of the same mind as eloise and doesn't really want to marry #and so from that pov him assuming that she'll just be a spinster and they'll be friends forever is not that unreasonable #additionally pen told him all about what she wants her purpose to do for her and like. if her purpose isn't marriage then why would he thin #that she wants to get married. especially with her helping eloise with whistledown and just generally being tied to eloise #the real question is why he expressed that he's not courting pen in the manner that he did #bc he got rid of cousin jack and all that. he expressed that he was taking on the role of protecting the featheringtons. #i assume he was like. a little drunk. and then that combined with assuming that pen doesn't want to marry. well. #bc even if he thinks that he's not doing any harm by telegraphing to other men that pen definitely not wife material #that also doesn't reflect well on prudence who obviously is interested in marrying #anyways. i can't wait for the grovelling. the jealousy. the gazing. just the works. #bridgerton
