Lin: You don't think I can fight because I'm a girl.
Kel: I don't think you can fight because you're in a wedding dress.
For what it's worth, I don't think Conor can fight in that dress either.
Conor: Perhaps not. But I would make a radiant bride.

What can you do now that you're writing adult novels that you couldn't with YA?
And, the synopsis says "Can forbidden love bring down a kingdom?" Does it mean Lin and Conor?
Will we see the other mentioned princes and princesses?
It does mean Lin and Conor. Kel has romantic problems too but at the moment they're unlikely to bring down a kingdom. :) I didn't write the jacket copy but my assumption is — Conor has feelings for Lin, but there's nothing he can do to act on them. He can't marry someone who isn't royal and he really can't marry an Ashkar. He'd probably have to abdicate. And then what? He's the last Aurelian. Not to mention Lin can't marry him or even just have an affair with him either; she'd be exiled. We'll definitely get more into that in the next book.
There's more you can do with frank talk about sex and drugs in adult, no doubt. Though there isn't a sex scene per se in Sword Catcher, I couldn't put my YA characters into a lot of the situations the characters find themselves in in SC. And as for the sex scenes coming in the future, I wouldn't do that in YA either. I also think adult just leaves you more space for worldbuilding and history and complex politics. None of that is a negative about YA. YA offers opportunities to do things you wouldn't do in adult. It just depends what you're trying to do in a given book or series.

He’s to become Prince Conor Aurelian’s body-double, shielding the Prince from all dangers. As his ‘Sword Catcher,’ he and Conor become close as brothers – yet Kel lives for one purpose: to die for Conor.

Here, a boy lives to protect his Prince with his life. A girl is destined to return lost magic to the world. A Prince must choose between his heart and his duty. And thrumming beneath it all, the heartbeat of a city unlike any other. Welcome to Castellane.
Known characters: (from top to bottom, from left to right, please appreciate the wonderful arts below)
Kellian Saren - our protagonist~ was kidnapped from his family when he was 5 and brought to the palace in order to be the Sword Catcher, the body double for the Crown Prince(🏳️‍🌈?). Used to have a crush on Antonetta, now too busy spending time with Prince Conor (🏳️‍🌈?). Big spoon energy
YOU'LL SAY: Rina... bestie he looks exactly like the second guy a bit lower, why so many Will Herondale cosplayers🤨 YES YES, THAT'S THE POINT, THEY HAVE TO LOOK ALIKE, IT'S LIKE Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman in Star Wars
Lin Caster - female protagonist, doctor, is skilled in healing magic (Catarina & Clary's daughter🤨?). There is a prophecy surrounding her, that says a very powerful goddess would return one day and it would be one of the girls from her community, ~possibly her~
Antonetta Alleyne - Heir to the wealthy silk charter, her mother dotes on her, dressing her in lace and grooming her to marry Prince Conor (the next guy). Her, Kel and Conor used to have this gang😎 when they were kids, but then her mother decided to turn her into a Kendall Jenner and now she's 💅🏻not like other girls💅🏻 and makes this ew sound everytime our protagonist walks by (secretly feels something else towards him....I guess?...)
Conor Aurelian - our Prince🤴🏻definition of: So you're a tough guy, Like it really rough guy, Just can't get enough guy, Chest always so puffed guy. What else? Oh, everyone tries to kill him and he hides behind his boyfriend's back. Little spoon energy
Joss Falconet - some lazy whore, idk. He has been friends with Conor and Kel since they were all small children. He loves parties, a good time, and ridiculous exploits, but there may be rather more to him…Matthew Fairchild core?👀✨ maybe....
The Ragpicker King - he's so 😋😩🤤he lives his dark emo girl aesthetic life. Doesn’t have a name or real identity. He lives in a big black mansion in the middle of Castellane and runs the crime scene. My future husband btw
Merren Asper - part-time student, full-time poisoner, and hopeless romantic. Merren has a dreamy, cheerful personality, despite being a poisoner. Well good for him, god bless🌿 he seems like a mixture of Kit Herondale and Wylan Van Eck

The first book comes out on October 10 THIS YEAR so~ you can pre-order🌟✨for example, I can't so I'll just wait till someone sends it to me once it's out.
I REALLY hope I managed to get you slightly invested. It seems like a really nice fantasy series and I'd like to support Cassie's new work. She gave us our beloved TSC world and I have a strong faith in her. I know it's hard to dive into a new series but let's give it a chance!

analyzing Kel Saren x Antonetta Alleyne (my favorite Sword Catcher ship)
I think the overwhelming consensus is that Conor x Lin are peoples' favorite Sword Catcher ship, and I do like them, but Kel x Antonetta was definitely my favorite by far because they have such an interesting dynamic.
When I was reading the book, I initially disliked both Kel and Antonetta because I thought they were dry and boring up until about 25-30% into the book. Then, I realized that it might actually have been intentional because what we are seeing up until that point is both Kel and Antonetta's alternate personas, and later in the book we start to learn more about who they both really are. Spoilers below!
First, let's talk about Kel's alternate persona - Kel Anjuman. He is lost in this character of the prince's cousin, and at the beginning of the book seems like he has forgotten who he really is. He is just going through the motions - pretending to be Conor in some instances, trying to be invisible most of the time, and tolerating Conor's annoying friends. Being Conor's body double is definitely all that he was thinking about/cared about, and it seemed like he didn't have any interests, ambitions, or motivations at the beginning of the story. However, this is purposeful because Kel is literally property of House Aurelian and he has been trained for the sole purpose of being Conor's human shield, so he really CAN'T want anything, because he is expected to possibly die at any moment. He is just waiting for death, which causes him to be so reckless later in the book.
As Sword Catcher goes on, it becomes clear that there is a distinct difference between Kel Anjuman and Kel Saren, when I previously thought there was not much difference. As soon as Kel meets the Ragpicker crew (Merren, Ji-An, Andreyen) and realizes they know who he really is and give him what he needs - a motviation, a drive - the Kel Anjuman facade is gradually dropped as the book goes on, and Kel starts to struggle with integrating himself back into that persona around the nobles. His relationship with Conor starts to be strained by the end of the book too because I think Conor is sort of fooled by Kel's false persona - he has forgotten who Kel actually is, which is not surprising with Conor being so selfish and self-absorbed. I think Lin also helps Kel pull out of this rut because he is able to be himself around her and she understands him well. Lin's POV really shows the reality of the double life Kel has to live, with her constantly arguing with Conor about how wrong it is that Kel is essentially a human shield and is treated as utterly disposable in the eyes of House Aurelian.
The Ragpicker crew and Lin knowing Kel's identity is almost freeing for him, and so because he does not have to keep up the Anjuman persona all the time, he doesn't want to go back to that persona. He doesn't want to pretend anymore and that's where we see that struggle for him to fold back into that box at the Palace parties in the last 50% of the book.
Now, let's discuss Antonetta's alternate persona. We typically see her through Kel's eyes, and he makes a clear distinction from her personality before and after aged 15. Before age 15, she is a childhood friend, she loves doing everything the boys do (like sword fighting, for instance) and they boys treat her like one of them because they are kids, they don't really see the difference. After age 15, Antonetta has her debut (at 15?? eww, at least make it age 18). Thereafter, she is strictly micromanaged by her mother and now adopts a highly feminine look and a giggly, stereotypically dumb blonde-esque personality. The boys all start thinking of her completely differently, in more of a sexual way, and we see that Kel was floored and confused about the sudden shift in her personality and the shift in the way that everyone saw her. He states that everyone forgot that she was clever, extremely opinionated, and liked fighting. The boys (Conor, Joss, and Charlon) only saw her as a sexual object after her debut. The difference in how Kel acts versus the other boys can be attributed to the difference in their status - Kel grew up in an orphanage up until age 10 and is only pretending to be noble and does not consider himself one, and therefore does not see the customs of the nobles (such as a debut) as relevant, while the others have grown up with this ingrained in their minds and are used to these practices and have grown up to expect them. I think Kel also didn't have much experience seeing the power imbalance between men & women in this society, so it was very new to him.
This is when Kel and Antonetta, at age 15, have a falling-out because she and her mother both tell him that he cannot pursue Antonetta because he is a minor noble. This is after Kel "proposes" to her with a grass ring, and I think this proposal was very innocent and sweet, so it was devastating for Kel to be rejected so cruelly because of his lack of status/power, which especially hits home because he really is a commoner. Antonetta specifically tells him that she grew up, and he needs to grow up too. I think this is when Kel starts developing this alternate persona. In a way, Antonetta catalyzed this shift in his mind of how he should conduct himself as a noble and how little power he had in making choices for himself, which I think is a big part of him trying to tamp down every want/interest/ambition that he had.
Antonetta continues to develop this persona, to the extreme frustration of Kel (even though he does the exact same thing). In his POV, we constantly see him being aggravated by her fake smile that makes her seem clueless/dumb. There is one scene where the five of them (Conor, Kel, Joss, Charlon, and Antonetta) are hanging out, and Kel is standing on the balcony being moody because he doesn't want to interact with the other boys. Antonetta is hanging with the boys and has adopted her clueless persona, then goes to talk to Kel and acts completely different. Then, Conor, Joss, and Charlon call Antonetta over again and Antonetta immediately dons the persona. When she comes back to talk to Kel again, it's gone again. She goes back and forth between Kel and the boys multiple times and literally changes the way she interacts every single time. This was the scene that made me start to like her character because it clearly depicted her switching the way she acts based off the person she is speaking to. Throughout the book, we see her showcase her cleverness by diffusing and/or manipulating situations to go the way she wants them to using this tactic. Kel notices this more and more as time goes on, and shows that she is still the same person she had always been, but she was just forced into this persona to survive on the Hill (and to please her strict mother).
Near the end of the book, Conor gets engaged and so Antonetta's mother stops strongly regulating her whereabouts and her outfits choices. This is freeing for her because now she is able to sneak around and practice sword fighting (something she was not previously able to do) and wear clothes that she wants to wear. Her mother forced her to wear hyper-feminine colors (pink, yellow, etc.) to make her look more childlike (eww) to be appealing to Conor, I guess? Now, she is able to dress in a more mature fashion, which does not match with her "clueless" persona (because this persona is a lot about her pretending to be naive, inexperienced, young, etc.) Antonetta having more freedom appears to make it harder for her to continue to use her "clueless/dumb" persona with her newfound ability to choose her own clothes and pursue her preferred hobbies. Therefore, she and Kel are in the same position at the end of the book. Both Kel and Antonetta are really struggling to continue to don their alternate personas, and they can see that in each other, especially since they always drop their guards around one another.
In one of their final scenes together, Antonetta tells Kel that she was only interested in marrying Conor so that she could keep her Charter because her husband will inherit the Charter, and Conor couldn't. Then, she tells Kel that he seems to not want anything. I think this is so interesting because she noticed the way that he tamped down everything that he wanted to the point that it seems like he wants nothing. Obviously she doesn't know that he can't have anything because he is expected to die at any moment, but I think this line from Antonetta shows us that Kel really was losing himself and had very little motivation to do anything of his own volition. I think Antonetta maybe knows more about Kel than she is leading on or at least suspects that he is not who he says he is because she is observing him and trying to gage what his motivations are.
When Kel found the ring in Antonetta's locket, I almost passed out, I was so excited. This is an obvious indicator that Antonetta still has feelings for Kel and remembers the way they used to be in their childhood, when Kel always thought he was the only one. Maybe, to her it is a symbol of someone who loved her for who she truly was, with no false persona and with no interest in power from her family's Charter.
Their dynamic is so interesting and I know with more development it could be so insanely good in book 2! At the end of Sword Catcher, it seems like they seem to be getting closer and very aware that they are both hiding things, and with Antonetta's mother wanting her to marry Gremont, I know shit is going to hit the fan. They definitely are the most interesting couple to me because of how similar but different they are in their defense mechanisms and how they are surviving the challenges in their lives. They both understand each other very well and they WILL be together at the end of book 2, I know it!!

I finally finished Sword Catcher, and here's my thoughts. Spoilers, of course. So read at your discretion.
Story
The first 25% or so of this book felt too descriptive to me. I know we need to know context, but I was busy thus I could read one chapter a day and the beginning was a bit slow and it concentrated a lot on politics and well, descriptions of places and backstory. I held on because I knew that this was all preparation, and the story improved a lot after our second pov character, Lin, made her appearance. It went better from that point on, and even if some things felt like a deja vu (to some scenes happened in tsc) I tried to not to let them influence me and pretend this story wasn't written by the same author (of tsc). I liked that since this is a fictional world, there was a lot of freedom when it came to dress code, lore, magic, etc.
Characters
Our main POV characters are Kel and Lin. I have to admit, Kel fell very flat to me at first. He was a little boring, and up until the 25% mark (so after the story really started to take off) he annoyed me. After then, I still preferred other characters more, but I enjoyed him more (still like other characters more, though). I instantly liked Lin. She is interesting, and I liked that she was a physician and she is peculiar.
Out of the royals, I really like Conor, and as far as ships are concerned, I ship him with Lin. They are enemies to lovers, and there seems to be mutual interest but of course, being him a prince and she an outcast girl in this world, it seems like they can never be. Wrong. Hope we'll see more development about that.
I also really like Antonetta. She seems like the typical naive girl but she is clever, and I also believe she likes Kel and their situation is quite like Conor/Lin (royal/peasant). Kel kissed a lot of people in this book, but he seems to have a thing for Antonetta.
The other royals are okay, I guess. They are entertaining, and I think the one who wants House Aurelian to fall might be among them.
Out of the criminals, I find the character of the Ragpicker King super interesting. Who is he? Where does he come from? My idea is that he might also be a royal bastard, but we'll see. I also like Ji An and Merren (who gives me Christopher Lightwood vibes) and Jerrod.
The whole criminal gangs business is not over and considering the ending, I think the criminal characters will help unveil who is the traitor on the Hill.
Overall, I enjoyed it (the second half more than the first) and I want to know how it continues, since it ended in a cliffhanger. I wouldn't say this book had an impact on me, though. I liked it enough, but I wouldn't consider it a 5 stars book. To me, this is a 3.5/4 stars.

ok so having just finished Sword Catcher…here are some of my random thoughts or things I want for book 2! *spoilers may be ahead* first and foremost. i loved this book so much!! the plot and characters were all really well done and i can’t wait for book 2!
now…
- the king. he’s presented as being mentally unstable??? like he’s just in his tower all day w the stars and his advisor, but is he actually? bc during some interactions w kel and later in the story he seems perfectly lucid. or at least less unstable w some possible anger issues? he has a lot of strength, he’s flinging people around and stuff so. idk. he’s a bit of a mystery to me. and also, was he even into the astronomy stuff and was he seeing true visions from the stars? or was it just BS being fed by fausten? (was fausten telling the truth or was he an imposter? and for what?) i also want more background of the king and andreyen, how did they even connect?
- i loved ji-an, merren, and andreyen’s dynamic so much and i want to know more!! how did andreyen save ji-an? what’s their history? i just really want to know more about those two and i want more merren content in general bc i really liked his character.
- i saw a theory saying andreyen could be the exiled son of the maharam and i really like that idea.
- jerrod. along w the theory of andreyen I saw someone saying that Kel’s friend Cas from the orphanage could be jerrod and that’s why Jerrod didn’t kill Kel when he had the chance and also why he wears a mask. I think there could be some merit to it, but idk…wouldn’t Kel recognize Jerrod if he was Cas? I know it’s been years and people change but idk. If they were truly best friends in their early years you’d think he’d know him. But I like the theory!
- more on Jerrod. I really liked him from what I read and I want to know more about him and Ji-an. It’s kinda hinted they know each other pretty well? Merren was even teasing Ji-an about knowing Jerrod’s preferred meeting places (tho I could be wrong) so it makes me think they have a past. I want to know if Jerrod ever went to the Ragpicker King to see about a job, if he’s part of the crew in book 2 I would really like to see the changed dynamic.
- I totally thought Mayesh would die. I don’t know why but I felt like something was gonna happen to him after he was interested in showing Lin the ropes…I can still see it happening tbh.
- Conor and Lin. I was thinking Kel/Lin was gonna happen and then she and Conor interacted and I was obsessed w them. The dynamic, the scenes, it was all great and I want to see more of them. The way people kept mentioning Story-Spinner tales of princes falling for girls like her (not Ashkar but still) and then she kept saying she wouldn’t marry him and stuff. It just all made me think that yes she will? Like he’s gonna do something and marry an Ashkar to show everyone they are human beings and worthy of respect? Idk how but I’d be interested in seeing that journey.
- Kel and Antonetta. Kel and Vienne? Kel and Merren? He had chemistry with everyone and I want to see his relationships develop. I want to know if Ana will betray him bc it’s been established that the charter families can’t be trusted and she’s obviously secretive. Vienne was really interesting and I don’t 100% think she’s dead because that was super sudden, and she had a character fanart which multiple others didn’t when they had bigger roles. (Poor Luisa 💔).
- Conor and Kel. Ok so what will Conor think about Kel’s connection to Andreyen? To Prosper Beck? Idk I want to know why whoever said that Conor will loathe Kel eventually bc Kel does/has something Conor wants. I really want to know about that. Maybe related to Lin?
- Merren reminded me a lot of Wylan Van Eck, so I do want to see more of merren being that mixture of innocent looking/dangerous.
- The whole “this is the start of the end of House Aurelian” thing was so good, I need to know what it means … what did they get themselves into
- the whole war with Sarthe, will there actually be a war? who’s gonna die 😭😭 and along those lines, how is Lin gonna pull off being adassa’s reincarnation? I think she totally will be in the end but as of right now she’s not…so…
- Is Lin being the Goddess returned going to bring her into the spotlight and in the palace’s attention now? Maybe more scenes of her and Conor being forced together? I’d be into that ngl

Wrong Enough To Make It Feel Right
Fandom: Sword Catcher - Cassandra Clare
Pairing: Lin Caster x Conor Aurelian
Rating 16+ (Mild Sexual Content)
Snippet:
"This is wrong." Lin whispered, even as she found herself pinned against the wall, caged between Conor's arms. "You shouldn't be here."
"Then push me away, Lin Caster." Conor said roughly, and Lin's knees nearly buckled at the way the prince said her name, "push me away, and I will leave you alone."
In answer Lin lunged, slamming her mouth against the prince's.

Sword Catcher: Worldbuilding
Who rules Castellane?
Castellane is a city-state — it has its own government and royal family. Part of my inspiration for Sword Catcher was Venice during the Silk Road era, and families like the famous Borgias and Medicis. Castellane’s government consists of a royal family and a Council of Twelve — twelve families, each of whom holds a charter that gives them ownership over a certain kind of good that is traded through the continent of Dannemore. These are the Charter Families; they are the richest in Castellane, and Charters are passed down through families, like an inheritance — though the ruling family, the Aurelians, has the power to grant charters and also to take them away.
The Charter Families
The Uzecs have quite a bit of sway as the holders of the Wine Charter.
A popular man is Mathieu Gremont, who holds the Coffee and Tea Charter.
Fabulous Lupin Montfaucon always has the latest fashions, as appropriate for the Charter holder for fabrics.
Joss Falconet is an old friend of Prince Conor’s, and owns the Spice Charter. More on him later!
House Gasquet controls all the oil and perfume coming in and out of the city.
Lady Alleyne, the mother of Antonetta, is in charge of the valuable Silk Charter and makes sure she and her daughter are always in the finest silk dresses.
The Cazalet Family has owned the Banking Charter for so long, coins are often called “cazalets”.
House Roverge owns the Dye Charter. House Sardou has the Glass Charter,
House Raspail Timber, and Alonse Esteve owns the Horse Charter.
They have their meetings in the Dial Chamber, whose seats are arranged to look like the numbers on a clock.
Tumblr media
Sitting at midnight is House Aurelian, the Royal Family, whose charter is kingship. At these meetings the fates of cities and countries are decided with the stroke of a pen. It used to be the pen of King Markus, but as he has grown weaker with a mysterious illness, that pen has found itself in the hand of his son, Conor Aurelian…possibly the least responsible person in Castellane.

Sword Catcher and A darker shade of magic
so others have probably noticed the similarities too but I just had to get this out of my brain and put it here.
I have only read the first book of A darker shade trilogy and I can already see some similarities. Lin and Kell are about a rare type of species, she's Ashkar and he's Antari. Let's just forget for a moment that they both start with an A and focus on how only THEIR species could perform magic. Both of the characters need some talisman or another object to perform magic. Though Kell can conjure magic on his own, he still needs some thing to conjure specific magic for example jumping between the London's. I think there is also some magical objects that collectors collect but only the antaris could use them.
Now this is just the similarities between Lin and Kell. There is another main character that goes by the name of…. KEL. yep. Kel.
The official character synopsis
"Kel is an orphan, stolen from the life he knew to become the Sword-Catcher-the body-double of a royal heir, Prince Conor Aurelian. He has been raised alongside the prince, trained in every aspect of combat and statecraft. He and Conor are close as brothers, but Kel knows he has one destiny: to die for Conor. No other future is possible."
Kell and Kel are both orphans, they both grew up alongside a prince. Idk if Kell's destiny is to sacrifice himself for Rhys but I wouldn't be surprised bc the king of red London uses Kell to complete his tasks.
So yep. Cassie probably didn't mean to make it similar and it was probably not her intention. The book may be COMPLETELY different then A darker shade considering this is only similarities between the characters but I hope the books aren't similar because we r gonna get a TMI x Harry Potter plagiarism scandal again.
