DSOD is such a funny movie. Kaiba comes on screen in his giant fucking space station molded into his company logo and I just laughed. He’s so dramatic. He misses his rival and is so obsessed with getting some closure for once in his goddamn life that he spent well over a billion dollars to excavate a cursed puzzle and build a space elevator to the afterlife but the minute anyone says anything about ‘hey maybe that’s a little unhealthy’ he’s snapping and snarling and telling them to fuck off. Except the cube guy. He’s has a duel disk and is also full of unprocessed grief so he can stay. Yugi Moto looks them dead in the eye and says “first of all, I’m only here because you both blackmailed me. Secondly, fuck you both for that, by the way. Thirdly, I’m gonna kick your ass”. Card games ensue, meanwhile Yugi tries his absolute best to show Kaiba the pharaoh is gone and maybe he needs to spend some time reflecting on his emotions and yes the invitation is still open to talk about Him BUT THEN THE NARRATIVE PROVED KAIBA RIGHT?!! AND THE PHARAOH COMES BACK AND YUGI HAS TO LOOK KAIBA IN THE EYE AND TELL HIM THAT HES SORRY FOR DOUBTING HIM?? WHAT. What Kaiba takes from all this is that a) his horrid coping mechanisms work after all, b) if he just fucks around enough and spends all his money he really can be king of the world and c) the best option is definitely to finish that space elevator and fucking. Go to the afterlife I guess. To duel his “hated rival” or whatever. Fuck off

yuugi knew there was something between seto and atem. he let atem have seto because yuugi would never have the confidence to act on his own feelings for seto.

but atem is gone now, and yuugi is left alone in his own head, wallowing in his grief.

seto knows yuugi is not atem. but he approaches yuugi because this is the body atem loved him with.

yuugi lets seto use him anyway. maybe this way he can have seto in anyway he can. even if seto only wants him because he looks like the person he loves.

but yuugi overdoes it, maybe. he plays the dutiful boyfriend, going out on dates, holding hands, kissing lips, cheeks, foreheads, sleeping with him, bringing him lunch at work, bordering on almost believing seto does love him.

until. until seto slips and calls him atem while in bed with him.

yuugi pretends not to hear it. the pharaoh is gone. and seto is his until seto is done using him.

Fully admit I'm not much of a prideshipper but I've been thinking about how the manga takes place starting in 1996. This would make the end of the series taking place around 1998-1999, and by extension so does DSoD, yet Kaiba has crazy technological advancements outside of modern capabilities. It makes me think of that one post about the creators of goldfish crackers and rubber gloves, and how love drives innovation and invention.

Granted Kaiba definitely has more going on there but it's just a thought

so in the great yugioh rewatch we've made it up to the tag team skyscraper duel and of course, the only development that's really happening right now in the story is the relationship between kaiba and atem.

don't even talk to me about how yugi's friends are in danger and actual yugi is nowhere to be found...

anyway. battle city's decision to just fully ignore yugi aside. kaiba and atem. these two probably have the most complex relationship of any of the characters, and it walks this very thin line between love and hate. kaiba's end is kinda obvious- man's obsessed with atem. always has been. and on atem's side, he clearly has a lot of respect for kaiba as a duelist, but more striking is how he's always so hopeful that kaiba is gonna turn his ass around and get on atem's level emotionally. like, it is so clear that atem wants to be friends with kaiba. I mean look at this exchange:

this boy was actually smiling thinking that kaiba might finally be considering working with him as a team, only to be hit with abject betrayal when he realizes that's not what's happening, kaiba was just manipulating him. and of course, by the end of the duel kaiba does come around a bit on the idea of working together, yet he never goes so far as to consider atem anything but his rival. he just can't seem to wrap his mind around the concept of genuine friendship.

and this is where the problem is for me, the reason these two just can never really work as anything other than rivals. they are just fundamentally, ideologically, and emotionally on very different levels.

kaiba constantly disparages atem and his concern for his friends. he constantly mocks and belittles atem's friends. he refuses to consider any of his own emotional vulnerabilities and attachment needs aside from mokuba. and we know why, we know where kaiba is coming from given his backstory with his and mokuba's adopted father. we know why kaiba is the way he is. but to atem? his friends and yugi are his whole world. they're the reason he exists, the reason he has any sort of identity outside of being the amnesiac ghost of an egyptian pharaoh. in many ways atem centers his whole existence around his friends, they're the most important part of his life, if you can even call what he is "alive." and as badly as he might hope kaiba could be part of those friends, kaiba just refuses to let himself be that emotionally vulnerable with atem, even if maybe, deep deep down, there's a part of him that would want to see atem as a friend too.

there's also another issue with these two- in many ways, kaiba's rivalry with atem is fully un-reciprocated. kaiba views atem as his eternal foe, atem is the only duelist he truly respects and considers his equal, and he's obsessed with beating him. dueling atem makes kaiba feel alive and motivated in a way nothing else does. he challenges kaiba, makes him a better duelist, makes kaiba strive to do better and more just to beat him. for kaiba, this rivalry is everything, and that's partly why he's so unable to cope when atem is gone (if we're assuming DSoD is canon).

but atem just does not see kaiba this way. atem does not put kaiba on any greater pedestal than anyone else. he definitely does respect kaiba as a duelist, but he shows that same respect towards many duelists throughout the show- mai and jonouchi in particular. if anything atem feels more passionately about dueling jonouchi than he ever does about kaiba. atem just does not feel the same sense of thrill and exhilaration at dueling kaiba- there is no point in the narrative where atem's motivations have anything to do with wanting to beat kaiba unless it's to save his friends or to remove him as an obstacle to some greater purpose. atem's just not that into the rivalry. if anything it's very clear he wishes kaiba would just chill the fuck out about it- especially here in the battle city arc, he seems to find kaiba pretty tiresome.

so while these two clearly have a strong connection to each other, and clearly both want something from the other, they're just never on the same wavelength about it. kaiba can't be the friend atem wants him to be, and atem can't be the rival kaiba wants him to be. they're ships in the night.

This year I was honored to join the DVOD event of the DPOD server  (that's a discord Prideshipping server, Prideshippers-join!) I was assigned to do the lovely request of Marner, of Kaiba borrowing/stealing something from Atem's wardrobe. And this was so much fun!! When I wondered what could Kaiba steal from Atem -The puzzle was the first though-since it's "go big or nothing" Kaiba after all.
