Henchmen of Clayface

Basil Karlo henchmen are much more of a cult, only apearing in Joker's Asylum: Clayface #1 2010. The Children of the Clay come to Clayface's attention after he atcted a theatre for showing his films in a late night schlock collection. Originally believing they were there to mock his movies clayface threatened to eat one of them, he was surprised when the fan asked to be eaten. The Children of the Clay explained to Clayface and they as a cult have two major interests in him. Firstly he played a monster in the movies then went on to become an actual monster in real life after his transformation. Secondly the wider world's rejection of him frames him as an underdog who they can relate to do to feeling rejected by society. Clayface takes over an abandoned theater and staffs it with fake people made of clay. The follower all want to be consumed by Clayface and so he begin doing so. They are interrupted by Batman and Clayface shape shifts into one of his followers blending in since of them wear his outfit from his first film. The cultists and Clayface escape to fight another day, except this was the last appearance of The Children of the Clay.

There is so much story potential with The Children of the Clay and it they have only became more relevant over time. a cult of lonely people who form because of a intrest in cinema who are lead into self destructive or just suicidal ideas. This sounds like it could be a call out of about 8 different online groups and that why it would make for an impactful modern story.

There is also Basil Karlo's role in the group since he works as the perfect idle for the cult, but I don't believe he would ever consider being a long term leader. That role of leader could go to any number of characters. Each of the other Clayface's could bring something different to the role. Matt Hagen can be the bemused bum who is taking advantage of the cult and cults of all they've got. Preston Payne can turn the cultists into clay to relieve his pain like his first appearance and simply say it's them becoming one. Sondra Fuller has always had image issues and wanted to be beautiful, so a cult worshipping her as a godess in her natural for would work. Cassius Payne could be a immature and cruel god or his parents could say he is a messiah to use the cult to get him back.

There is also the option for original characters like a member of the original cult trying to bring it back and maybe empower himself like Basil Karlo did with the Mud Pack. The opinion to have one of Clayface's lost fragments be worshipped and gain personality from that could really work. If there must be a twist they can believe there a part from Basil Karlo when in reality it's from any of the other Clayface's.

In the list of AUs that will never happen the Basil introduces Music Meister to the rest of the Mud Pact and he becomes an unofficial sixth member is one of my faves. I just ship them a lot.

Cassius is thrilled to have another fun uncle and Darius may help Basil ruin the kid by turning them into a non-binary THEATER kid. Wich is the worse type of queer kid (I was one, I know). They cry in joy as Cassius (in his disguised human form) decides to audition to the middle school production of Beuty and the Beast.

Preston decides Darius is a better influence to his son than Basil or Matt. He does ask to study Darius metagene because he is looking for meta habilities as a way to cure his condition (or at least don't suffer in blinding pain unless he kills people sometimes).

Sondra is less thrilled and is actually very intimidating at first because she sees Basil as an older brother and has questions about the man who dared to date him. After realizing he has good intentions she is fine with him.

Matt is Matt. He is the chillest guy around and accepts new realities pretty easily (became a clay monster = oh well let's comit thematic crimes than it appears to be fun) so he may joke around Darius but is actually very friendly and it's just happy Music Meister didn't pick Basil costume of calling him Matthew.

P.S: Rita Farr is also an unoficial member of the Mud Pact since she and Basil were old Hollywood best frennimies before both becaming monsters. She was way less thrilled than Darius with this as while she likes them she is a hero and they are decidedly not (specially Matt).

What are you’re thoughts on clayface joining the bat family?

So having NOW read Basil's reformation arc, I think his interactions with the bat family proper in Batwoman and Detective Comics were interesting, but I think as a status quo I enjoy more where he ended up in Ram V's Catwoman run. Even a reformed villain should get to be something of a wild card (and on a meta level, I think Selina deserves a shapeshifter wild card more than Bruce, who despite being brought down to "millionaire" in Tynion's run still has all the toys a vigilante could ever need).

But in terms of having a sympathetic Clayface join the bat family, I think I'd prefer Preston Payne over Basil Karlo. Preston's degenerative metahuman condition was always more interesting than the "if he makes himself look normal too often he'll die!" handwave Basil got in Rebirth, and his extremely limited abilities mean that he wouldn't just be a "Get Out of Jail" free card plot device for Batman to use if he reformed.

I'm just going to run with the idea that there's multiple people running around as Clayface at the same time in Shiversverse. Listen, I absolutely love everything about Basil Karlo, but it bothers me when he gets combined with Matt Hagen. I certainly don't mind when he gets Hagen's powerset; i mean, shapeshifting with an overdramatic horror actor makes complete sense! But I love Karlo's original look with the gothic looking cape and hat, and having him just look like Hagen's Clayface is such a waste of potential! And poor Preston and Sondra gets ignored all the time!

Clayface V - Cassius Payne

Another redesign, this time a little more substantive. I’ve never been exactly satisfied with how little individual character Cassius has gotten. His parents are two highlights of the extensive Clayface library and Cassius is the only one to be born as a Clayface. I wanted to play up his youth and lack of identity more than anything else.

Cassius Payne, the fifth Clayface, is the son of Preston Payne, the third Clayface, and Sondra Fuller, the fourth. He’s inherited neither Preston’s delusions nor Sondra’s ruthlessness, but he is singularly desperate. Cassius doesn’t have any true form, wasn’t born with one, instead constantly living as others for as long as he’s able. Cassius is mostly harmless, but is desperate for purpose and identity, and will lash out at anybody who discovers him while he’s under one of his guises. It’s also not exactly healthy for him, getting sicker the longer he tries to keep a single form without changing. Not a bad kid, but a really volatile one. Cassius is a powder keg when left to his own devices, and his outbursts need to be carefully defused.

Not the sort to make plans on his own. Cassius is nonetheless often involved with other people’s operations. He’s a collaborator, working with anyone who will take him. His drive for belonging and nativity make him pretty easily strung along. His most frequent collaborator is Sondra herself, who, while close with her son, sees him in very functional terms.

This version of Cassius is about 16, having been born pretty early in Bruce’s career and mostly fighting the protégés after the story gets moving. He’s sort of distant from his parents, especially Sondra, who I’ll get to eventually. He loves them, but sort of resents both of them. They both chose their forms and he didn’t. Preston is at a live-in hospital these days and Sondra is still performing her secretive mercenary work. He constantly tries to live a normal life but just can’t maintain it. He has sort of Preston quality where he starts to have memories of the lives he pretends to lead if he stays in them too long. Which he tries to do every time without fail. Cassius thinks that if he can just maintain it he’ll have a full life as one of these people.

AU where Basil Karlo is just a tiny little bit less egocentric, Matt Hagen doesn't die and the Mud Pact are besties.

Also AU were Batman was Bruce and not Jean Paul Valley when Cassius was kidnnaped so he decides to help Sondra (who wasn't comiting crimes anymore at that point except when her son was kidnnapped and in danger what is understandable) raise the kid while trying to find a cure for Preston (or at least the pain-murder part). Thanks to that Cassius has a happy childhood with two loving parents(although if he has to visit Arkham disguused for Preston or Bruce did fund a cure is open in the air as both are fine to me) who fully accepted them and three unhinged goodfathers/uncles (Batman, Basil and Matt) and they become an antihero and part of Damian's Teen Titans
