"Someone asked me: - What does the dragon symbolize? I replied with another question: - And what does the human being symbolize?"
Nice and aesthetic shots of my Predaking poseable figurine! The most ambitious sculpture project I have done so far (was from Sep-Oct 2022). This isn't my first time doing a poseable character in cold porcelain but I wasn't prepared to struggle with how heavy each piece I added to it debilitated the wire I used for the articulations (recycled plastic coated wire from leftover packaging) so I ended up with double wiring too late in the process… at times it sags a bit when posing. Still, I loved the final result, especially how I managed to capture those gorgeous fiery wings and veiny details in gold.
Under the cut, I will share the rest of the photos for the ones curious!
As always I like showing the size of my sculpted project while holding them gently AAA He is quite the biggest I did too!
Tumblr media
A quick comparison to the more early poseable figurines I did before that year (yesss! There's a tiny Skylynx too) and an older one (the Skully creature) that I used as a basis for the wiring structure.
Tumblr media
(Sorry for the wonky background setting, I still need to get a camera tripod)
Tumblr media
Yes I didn't paint the wings on the back side, bear with meee. But look at all those details!
Tumblr media
In the original plan I wanted to make his maw poseable too but by how heavy the head got already, discarded the idea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even with those flaws, he is imposing AAA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The funniest thing, all started with a plain black so all the coats of pretty colors were painted by hand!
Tumblr media
So much work... but was worth it!

Pumpkin Shukat Room Guardian
Pumpkin and Spice go live in my shop this today 11/12 at 12pm EST.
The Pumpkin Shukat has an amethyst crystal heart. It stands about 10 inches tall and it has a coat of high quality faux fur that is very soft. The head and feet are cast in resin from an original sculpt. The hands are sculpted out of a flexible clay that does not break when bent. The neck, legs, and tail have a fully posable plastic ball and socket armature inside that will not wear out over time. The arms have a posable wire armature inside.
See how they were made in my Patreon.

I've done this pose for an art piece multiple times, so I felt like drawing something like this at least once.

Hot take but I strongly prefer an affordable figurine in a single good pose (pop up parade) to an expensive poseable figurine made of a dozen parts that can fall off or come loose that I have to pose myself and will fall over (figma, nendoroids)

ColdFlash fanmerch response summary!
I'm happy to share an update based on the collective responses to the interest check survey and share my plan for next steps. TL;DR several designs are underway and I'm excited :D
First up, a response summary of the major takeaways.
Most wanted fanmerch items:
1. Plush 2. Keychains 3. Stationery 4. Enamel Pins (tied) 4. Custom Figurines/Statues 5. Drinkware 6. Wearable/useable accessories (hats, socks, scarves, bags) 7. Soft home goods (blankets, towels, pillows)
Since plush took an early lead, and because it will take the longest in terms of manufacturing time, I got underway with plush designs foremost. While I would love to make all of these things, I’m figuring out what will be most viable to make and how I can supplement options for the rest via my existing print-on-demand storefronts.
Thinking about costs:
Another factor that I want to be considerate of based on responses is the overall cost for any items I make; for example, while I could design super-detailed and intricate poseable plush with removable clothes, they would easily cost $100+ USD each and - while I'm sure they'd be neat - they'd be rather unaffordable. As I'm planning to front the manufacturing costs for everything, they'd also be quite the investment for me too;;;
So, the plush I'm designing will be smaller (around 10 centimeters) with a keychain attachment, and my goal is to try to get the set of both to be around $40 USD (+shipping) or under, which will be a challenge but I'm happy to be working with a great manufacturer to bring these lads to life!
For other items I’d like to tackle, I’m similarly aiming to be mindful of overall cost, especially for this first batch of items; I’d rather err on the side of caution and approachability however I can.
How will the merch be sold?
When merch items eventually go up for sale, it will be via Etsy as the primary storefront. This is for a few reasons:
Platform familiarity & safety for both buyers and sellers.
Etsy has price breaks on shipping and has other things set up that make it internationally viable - Etsy did the hard work with navigating VAT so I don’t have to!
While Etsy does have some fees/cost to me as the seller, I can factor those into the overall cost of any item being sold through there without it being a massive extra cost (both in terms of time & money).
What’s it gonna look like?
In terms of design aesthetic, the predominant preferences were for either stylized realism or cuter stuff, with an excellent additional write-in contingent of folks who like it when things err on the side of subtle. I like to call this latter design aesthetic “secret handshake” where it’s a strong design first, and then - upon closer inspection - you notice the reference; this tends to be more approachable for folks to incorporate into everyday situations like taking/wearing something to work no matter what their dayjob situation is like! Obviously each option has its own challenges and lends to certain things more than others, so it’s going to be fun to balance designs for these approaches with some different items. I’m happily comfortable creating in all of these design styles and excited to do more!
Fanzine interest summary:
100% of responses are interested in a fanzine!
100% of responses indicated support for a fanzine which included a mix of both new and old/previously-shared works.
Format preference is for a main fanzine to be G/T (using AO3 ratings), with an optional secondary collection separate from the zine for any M/E/NSFW content.
I’m excited at the prospect of working together with folks to craft a fanzine! Before doing that, however, I’d process to do some diligence for organization and planning so that it won’t be a doomed undertaking before it begins. I also obviously won’t be tackling that on my own so would want to determine a team and process for production and transparency. Pre-orders also present their own tricky challenges but are often necessary when doing production runs for unknown interest without taking on a great individual financial burden up-front, so I’d want to ensure the zine for any M/E/NSFW content.
HOKAY - thank you for reading through all of that! I'm not sure how much folks are interested in me sharing about the info and process but I'm happy to do so - feel free to ask :D

Oh more on my father!
On Tuesday,
Me: Mum wanted to know how much money you would put in for my birthday since you guys are splitting the total
Him: She never talked to me about it, how am I supposed to know?
Mum yelling from the other room: That's why she's talking to you about it!
Him: Ok, what do you have in the (online) cart?
Me: I have four hoodies, and mum put in action figures
Him: What the fuck are action figures?
Me: uhhh..-?
Him: Dolls?
Me: No?? Poseable little figurines
Him: Ok, why the fuck do you need the hoodies?
Me: ...They're FNAF?
Him: you have enough hoodies
Me: I'm literally asking for four things for my birthday
Him: I don't think you deserve anything for your birthday

Note
i have got to know what those are and if someone is selling more of them, ive tried out pose figures but could never get them quite right and the lines make them all the more easy to read!!
Tumblr media
As far I know these come in different colours and this wireframe look is just one version of how they can look.
I wouldn't be able to tell ya where to specifically look for them, the two I got are just what happened to pop up in a locale nerd store half a year between them, cuz they only get in random things when it comes to stuff like this. I didn't even know you could get these non wireframe style until I tried looking them up since the store didn't had Body-Chan at the time.
SHFiguarts as far I know is the brand behind most anime figurines you see people collect, with poseable features like joints and change in hands or heads for different expressions. I never had any interest in those tho until I fell over these while shopping manga locally.
So, if you want some of these for your own, best I can suggest is search for SHFiguarts Wireframe Grey Body-Chan/Body-Kun, if these are what you looking for specifically.
Mind you it's not a cheap brand and as poseable as they are, they are still limited in how flexible they can be. I don't have the see-through stands, props or extra hands myself, that I've seen you can get too somewhere.
Good luck!

On Nostalgia
So, the Oxford dictionary of English defines ‘nostalgia’ to be “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past”. Can’t say I disagree with this more positive take on the term. Too often (imo) do I hear about the act of being nostalgic to be a negative thing, something only old people day dreaming of “working on mysteries without a clue” while being “…barely seventeen” and “barely dressed” (thanks to Mr. Seger and Mr. Loaf for those respective references) do. An ex partner of mine certainly thought being nostalgic a “sad” thing. And I suppose I was almost inclined to agree. After all, remember Jack and Diane? We have Mr. Mellencamp to thank for instilling in us a sort of dark anxiety about getting too caught up in the past.
To those nostalgia-is-negative Nancy’s, I say, lighten up! Surely there’s nothing wrong with praising the past. Well, maybe not “praising”—though, couldn’t one argue many religions to be nostalgic for a person or place of another time? (I’m looking at you, JC). Anyway, I didn’t start writing to get all controversial or biblical or political or whatever. Honestly, I just like old stuff. Novelties that are still novel. Much like Madonna, I tend towards being a “material girl”. Am I ashamed of this? Eh, maybe I don’t like the “materialistic” label. But 1980’s Care Bear figurines? Radical.
Was it not some great philosopher that talked about the past and…eh. I guess it’s been awhile since I was in skewl. And honestly, I’d rather just quote song lyrics, anyway: “I’m here for a good time, not a long time”. If you’ve read this far, hey. Thanks. Stay tuned for further garbledee-goop on everything from the aforementioned 1980’s Care Bear figurines (they were poseable!) to why shrubs are indeed empathetic.
Regards,
The Empathetic Shrub
