"A thorough modern, full-size treaty cruiser, His Majesty's Ship Norfolk, cruised into Montreal harbor on June 20 and berthed herself without the aid of tugs. Aboard was Vice-Admiral the Hon. R. A. R. Plunkett-Ernie-Erle Drax, C.B., D.S.O., commander of the American and West Indies squadron. The ship will remain in port for ten days. Much interest was shown in her berthing operation. hundreds of Montrealers lining Laurier pier against which the ship came to her moorings unassisted. Probably the longest ship ever to enter the harbor, Norfolk is certainly the most powerful. Tugs stood by, but no hawsers were run out to them. While still 200 yards off shore the Norfolk let down a boat with a shore crew aboard. Eight pairs of oars took the men in white uniform to the sea wall, up which they scrambled like monkeys."

“Knife Is Useless In Extracting Pay,” Montreal Star. June 26, 1931. Page 3.
----
CREATING a scene aboard the ship from which he was just discharged, brandishing a knife and demanding his pay in no meek accents, is conduct for which the Canada Shipping Act provides a heavy penalty, Thomas Scott, colored, of Halifax, learned this morning. He will spend the next six months in jail.
Discharged from a Canadian National freighter, Scott went back and demanded pay he said was owing him. Ordered off the ship by the master, he returned and started brandishing a knife. Then he was arrested.
Appearing before Judge Cusson this morning, he was sentenced to six months in jail - the minimum term
