I feel like I should put this out here with everyone calling Taliesin selfish and saying that the other people at the table should be mad at him, but I am currently going through that with one of my newbie players right now. I'm a newbie DM, and none of my players watches any DnD-related shows and this is their first-ever game, and we are three games in. There was a very real discussion last week about wanting to kill off a player character and wanting to know what to do about it if he actively does things that go against what the party wants or does things that put them in danger. He wants his character to be 'unpredictable' and 'chaotic' but has been doing things that routinely get himself into trouble or put the party in jeopardy, like drinking the blood of a poison frog after killing it and getting poisoned, or trying to sneak up behind a band of bandits robbing town after being explicitly told to hide and rolling a nat1 and nearly getting the group caught.

As a new DM and a people pleaser at heart, I've really struggled to come up with fair but appropriate consequences for these actions, and the rest of the party (his fiance especially!) are super pissed off with him for being reckless to the point of asking me what they should do about it and how they can get rid of him and make him roll a new PC.

I felt really bad for him because its obvious that he wasn't doing any of this to be malicious but he was playing a pirate and he wanted to demonstrate him being unhinged and crazy and unstable, so it was a really hard discussion to have and I could tell that he was a little disappointed no matter how much I told him he was going a good job and the character is really fun even if he does have his moments, but everybody else was seemingly against him. If he was doing it on purpose, it would have been different, but he was very apologetic and listened to what was being said but didn't know what else to do because he likes his character but doesn't know how to portray what he wants to portray without putting the others in danger and sacrificing a core aspect of his character. I didn't have the answer either so it was really difficult. And I still don't think we've reached a solution.

I don't know where I was going with this, but I guess I just wanted to say that everybody is super mad at Taliesin (I'm not, the man has never done anything wrong in my eyes) but it's almost impossible to know what's going on in somebodies head or how they are interpreting certain things or the story they are trying to tell. So no matter what you're feeling about the choices that were made tonight and the outcome that occurred, can we all just be nice and not make such horrible comments? I've been seeing some really awful stuff and I know the gang has to develop some thick skin working in the career that they do, but I just know if it were me or my players experiencing such hate and backlash over a decision they made, like eating an obviously cursed cupcake or tearing a significant doll in half, I would be devastated.

#will ALWAYS preach it has some of the best worldbuilding in anything i've ever fucking seen #especially in a video game. and ESPECIALLY a video game which isnt purely story-focused #splatoon's world feels so PAINFULLY fucking real its hard to even describe. the level of detail when it comes to LITERALLY everything #is insane. and thats only amplified when you're someone who's been playing it for a long time and has seen this world change in real time #i will always adore how time passes the same in splatoon's world as it does in real life. however long it's been since the last game came #out - thats how long its been in splatoon's world! characters are constantly changing and doing new things and taking on new roles #AND of course. the final splatfests making it so player input has a direct and pivotal effect on the setting and plot of the next game. #SO fucking cool and insane. like what other piece of media is like that #because of things like that and the worldbuilding and everything i also think that splatoon has one of the most seamless transitions #between singleplayer and multiplayer modes. a lot of times in games esp with stories those modes feel very disconnected #but in splatoon things that you do in singleplayer modes have an actual EFFECT on the world of multiplayer #i will never forget. how cool it felt when octo expansion came out and suddenly octolings started popping up in multiplayer #because in the irl sense. of course they were! people were beating that singleplayer mode and unlocking the ability to play as octolings #in multiplayer. but in-universe THIS IS ACTUALLY WHATS HAPPENING!!!! after your agent 8 escapes more octolings follow in their footsteps #and it is an actual noticeable cultural shift in the world of splatoon with it being talked about on the news and stuff #and this story of octolings coming to the surface and integrating into inkling society works perfectly because its not just something #you're hearing about. you are actually seeing IN REAL TIME octolings start to populate the city and matches because REAL PLAYERS are #playing as them. fitting perfectly into that narrative being created. its soooooo fucking good #anyways sorry i just love splatoon so much and i love talking about why its incredible #serena.txt

Started writing a post about unit blorbofication and story depth in FE in light of the latest round of past FEs VS 3H VS Engage discourse, someone remind me to go back to writing it later when I get my brainpower back.

#tl;dr preview i think what's going on is kind of a conflict between differing tastes in terms of Level Of Character Depth In Units #caused by the franchise's struggle with balancing the blorbo genre of emergent gameplay #it's definitely stupid to act as if character depth and intensive backstories are somehow exclusive to 3H #and all other FEs run on flat gimmick characters #BUT ALSO it's stupid to act like FE hasn't historically also run on flat gimmick characters #because the fact is that flat gimmick characters are just what happens in any game where the cast is too damn big #and the game doesn't have the colossal space needed to give everybody depth #+ the franchise's permadeath mechanics tend to impede the writers' ability to develop said units anyway #in 3H's case i would argue that it also has a problem with faux depth where the writers WANT it to be complicated and deep #but also it's REALLY goddamn obvious that they're interested in some parts of their story more than other #and that they bit off way way WAY more than they could chew when it comes to building their fantasy world #and these other issues just compound the problems that normally come with 'too big cast in a game where permadeath real' #it is kind of a sad reality that someone would fall into 'the players have to make up their depth' eventually #because it's just kinda impossible to develop *EVERYONE* if you don't have infinite ongoing serialized story space #but there are ways of managing that cast scope creep that the FE writers aren't quite good at wrangling #do to the aforementioned conflicts of interest in mechanics and general care #engage i haven't actually played yet or watched somebody else play so the best i've got is 'it's fun trash/trashy fun' #so i can't judge how it handles its own cast scope creep #but i get the impression that it falls back to flat characters and generic plot #which obviously isn't going to be very filling if you prefer meatier narratives and characters #but that's just how the nightmare tightrope of cast scope creep rolls

#some tag rambles bc im having a bunch of loz thoughts to hey why not do a short lived tag ramble #starting with the bad i have thought more on how i feel totk fucked up its characters and its like. yeah any arcs that are there are bad #zeldas is dogshit all of the sages are just. VERY tell no show and it really doesnt matter and otherwise idk #nothing wrong with a static character but imo with a static character you then have to show more of them #reveal some things. also doesnt really happen. the main speaking cast are also kinda weak in relation to link #they dont really work off of him very well bc hes… not treated like a character. hes just some virtuous everyman in the story #so theres no actual chemistry between him or the other characters bc he isnt treated a character so like. he has almost no chemistry #its all mostly one sided and none of the sages but zelda have any real chemistry with other major characters either #and the major characters zelda has chemistry with barely matter so fuck it. like when ppl talk abt like. loz stories #and ppl talk abt how yeah they arent the best but totk is rlly bad. i dont feel like any other loz stories are baaaaad #not in the same way. but they dont feel as egregiously fumbled. imo its bc of the characters most of them time #ofc story can be strong enough and im not discounting stuff like mm and oots themes and atmosphere and stuff #it seeeems to me the most popular non zelda sage is tulin? but mostly bc hes a sweet kid and thats fine and all but there doesnt seem to #be much else to him hes otherwise kinda unremarkable bc he just doesnt do much else and seems to exists mostly to serve gameplay and plot #botw did it better bc the champions actively had a dynamic and a relationship with link they arent the deepest but they have more substance #botw zelda is arguably the strongest character in botw with a unique personality and genuine relationship to link even if we just see it #in the memories and seeing her warm up to link is cool but imp they fumble it in the ending of her arc and how it kinda contradicts stuff #and in totk they doubled the fuck down on her unlocking her powers for reasons related to link and decided ig shed figure she needs to be #links forever bestie and hypeman and she kinda just revolves around him in a really superficial way and this is the negative extreme #of a character being bolstered by being connected to link. but anyways in loz its the characters that tend to be the strongest points #and the characters with a clear dynamic and relationship to link shine the most. think groose ghirahim ravio midna fi marin linebeck sheik #the list could go on but the characters who get a chance to shine by interacting with the Player Character are the ones who stick out #and ofc they get more screen time but they cant avoid that character development or general character fleshing out bc they are in some way #tied to link and in a sort of way link himself is more fleshed out through how those other characters react to him if that makes sense #i think loz is at its best when a good bit of emphasis and effort is placed on characters and character relationships #and when thise relationships and character are written well ofc this fucking matters too #anyways thats why ph is one of the best we love our character heavy black sheep them ds characters carry so hard and so fucking well mwah
