Yugi raised Jaden Part 8
Start - previous - next
It had been a few hours since Yugi had arrived at Kaiba Corp with Jaden and Joey. Since Yugi had bid them farewell and left for the afterlife.
Jaden had refused to leave the command room. At first Joey tried to get the kid to leave. Thinking food or dueling might entice the boy. Jaden was interested, but his eyes wouldn’t leave the spot where Yugi’s pod once was. Not until Mokuba asked if he wanted to see the screen that displayed Seto and Yugi’s vitals.
Joey counted it as a win when the little boy moved to see the screen. In all reality he could scoop the kid up and take him from the room but he wasn’t going to do that to the kid. Jaden just wanted to know Yugi was alright, that he was coming back, and if staying here brought him some comfort then that was okay with Joey.
“Hey Jaden,” Joey called to the boy once again and almost danced when the little one turned to look at him this time. Progress! “Do you want to get dinner?” He could see the boy hesitate again looking back at the screen with the vitals. Part of Joey just wanted to give in and sit with the kid and watch Yugi and Kaiba’s vitals until they came home, but he promised Yug he would take care of Jaden and he wasn’t going to let him down! Especially not with something as simple as dinner.
Thankfully Mokuba seemed to agree with him. “I can have them bring dinner to us.” Mokuba offered to Joey. He knew exactly how Jaden had to be feeling because he was just as worried for Seto. But they had to eat.
“That be great Mokuba.” Joey was relieved. That solved one problem. Now they could put off leaving the room until Jaden needs to go to bed. ‘And that will be its own adventure.’ Joey thought. Yugi had told him all about Jaden’s nightmares.
“No problem.” Mokuba smiled at Joey before turning to face Jaden. “What do you want to eat Jaden?” Seto always let him pick the meals when he was upset, so it felt right to let Jaden pick.
The little boy watched the monitors for a second longer before turning his attention to the two older boys in the room. “Fried shrimp.” It was the first bout of excitement they had seen from the boy since Yugi had left.
Mokuba smiled at him. “Okay fried shrimp coming up.” The little boy cheered as Mokuba went to send a dinner order to his staff. Joey decided to try and keep the ball rolling, seeing if they could distract Jaden more.
“Hey bud, now that we’ve got dinner taken care of, do you want to duel?” He watched as Jaden nervously looked back at the vital screen. “We won’t leave the room.” That got Jaden’s attention back. “Matter of fact we can sit so you can still see the screen. I just hate sitting around with nothing to do, plus your decks pretty sweet.” Joey tried every angle he could think of to get the kid to agree. He hated just waiting here when Yugi could be in trouble, and he wasn’t going to let Jaden deal with the same anxiety if he could help it.
Jaden, thankfully, finally lit up and excitedly nodded. “Okay! Let’s get our game on!” The little boy cheered.
Joey cocked his head at the boy while he moved to sit on the floor in front of the vital display screen. “Don’t you mean ‘let’s duel?’” He asked the boy.
Jaden shook his head as he moved to sit opposite of Joey. “That’s what d- Yugi always says when he duels, well everyone says it now, but d- Yugi always seems a little…” the boy paused looking for the right word. “Sad?” That didn’t feel right but Jaden didn’t know any other word to use for it. “When he says it. So I started saying ‘get your game on!’ Because it’s a game and we’re suppose to be having fun.”
And that’s a lot to take in all at once. Joey is processing so many feelings. First, he’s dumb, he can admit that, but he did not miss Jaden’s two almost slips. Thinking back the kid had done it earlier as well when saying bye to Yugi. But that’s not important right now, it is because his best friend is a dad now, but at this moment Joey’s brain is fighting to process several things.
The kid just said that Yugi seemed…Sad? When he dueled? Joey had to pause to think about that for a second. He thought over the recent months and the kid was right Yugi always seemed…down? Melencholy? Whenever he dueled. Ya he’d smile, but it never reached his eyes. Not since Atem. And oh man does Joey feel like a crappy friend now.
And here was Jaden, only four years old, able to see his best friend’s sadness and come up with a way to combat it. Joey had liked the kid before but now he understands why Yugi adores him.
“And what does Yug do when you say that?” He had to ask. He wanted to know more about how his best friend was doing. Jaden smiled at him, so wide he had to close his eyes.
“He laughs.”
Oh ya Joey’s this kid’s number one fan now. Well number two. In all the years they had been friends, he and Yugi have rarely fought, but something tells him Yugi would fight for that title.
“Alright then buddy, let’s get our game on!” Joey cheered as they drew their cards from their decks.
—————————————————————————
Yugi, Atem, and the others had found their way to a balcony. The chairs were plush and comfortable. Curtains hung from the pillars, able to be untied and closed for privacy, but now were pushed open gently blowing in the breeze, revealing the view from the palace. They were able to see the sprawling land of the afterlife. Egypt at the height of its power and beauty. The sun shining off of golden sand and making the blue river glitter. The town full of souls happily milling about with their loved ones.
Yugi and Atem sat close together. They had missed each other. They were so used to sharing space that siting together had quickly turned to leaning into each other.
Atem was soaking up the affection and attention of his light. How he had missed Yugi. Leaving him had been one of the hardest things he had ever done. While he is not happy with Kaiba and how Yugi got here, he was grateful for this opportunity to be with him again. However short that time may be.
Yugi was just as grateful for this gift. He was still upset about having to leave Jaden, but this time was precious.
Yugi had told them about Jaden. Aknamkanon had asked about everything and anything he could think of about his grandson. From heavy questions about how he was adjusting to living with Yugi, to little things like his favorite food. Yugi happily answered his questions, he loved talking about Jaden.
There were many times since he had met Jaden that he wished he could talk to Atem about him. He’d wish to tell him about Jaden’s strategies, his joy, the way he made Yugi feel like dueling could be fun again. There was never a moment when Yugi had missed Atem more than when he decided to adopt Jaden. Knowing that the person closest to him would never get to meet the amazing little boy he was taking in as his son. To know the two people he loved so much would never know each other.
So this. This opportunity to sit here and tell Atem all about his son, was priceless. He just wished the two could actually meet.
Atem listened attentively. Smiling brightly as Yugi told them more and more about their new family member. Mana would occasionally ask a random question. They were all off the wall, and ridiculous. Things like ‘who would win Jaden or a Nile crocodile?’ To which Atem had looked at her and responded with ‘he’s four!’ But Atem couldn’t be mad at her, not when each one of her questions made Yugi laugh.
Seto had been standing off to the side. Leaning against a pillar and watching over the conversation. He hadn’t interupted or asked any of his own questions. Just observed the interaction and learned. After an hour or two he finally pushed off the wall and approached Yugi.
Yugi turned to look at him as he came over, his amethyst eyes easily tracking Kaiba’s movements. Seto stopped in front of Yugi. The conversation had come to a halted as the others all wondered what it was he wanted to say.
“Yugi go home.” It was such a simple statement but also such a loaded request.
“Kaiba-” Atem started because how could Kaiba tell Yugi to go home when he was the reason Yugi was there in the first place? Atem had tried for a month to get Kaiba to go home, and now when Atem doesn’t want them to leave, Kaiba wants to go.
But Kaiba spoke over Atem. “Your son is waiting for you. There’s no reason to keep him waiting longer.” Kaiba could see that Yugi adored the boy, so why was he still here? He’d already confirmed that Seto was alright, he should head home to his son.”
“Did you forget that the boy is being contacted by a spirit?” Aknamkanon questioned, raising a brow at Kaiba. “Mahad is watching over his son and once he returns he’ll tell us what this threat is. It’s best for Yugi to wait for that information before he returns to your world.” The elder pharaoh’s reasoning was solid, his tone was gentle but firm. He was a man who was not used to being questioned.
Seto was a man who grew up defying men like Aknamkanon. “If there is some interdimensional threat to the boy,” he still refused to call it spirits or magic. He built a machine to get here, this wasn’t magic, these were different dimensions interacting. Not spirits, not magic, he refused that. “Then don’t you think he would feel safest with his father there?” While he had started his statement looking at Aknamkanon he ended it with his eyes locked with Yugi’s
Yugi shifted. While he didn’t want to say goodbye to Atem again, he agreed with Kaiba. Jaden felt safe with him, it’s why when he wakes from one of his nightmares he instantly seeks Yugi out. And as much as Yugi had been enjoying his time here with Atem, he had been restless the whole time thinking about Jaden passing a night without him.
Kaiba could see Yugi’s shift, and if there were two things Seto was incredible at, it was spotting weakness and pressing his advantage. “Go home Yugi.” Then because he had come to the decision to start reaching out to Yugi, to maybe finally accept his hand of friendship, he made an offer. “I’ll stay until Mahad returns, once I defeat the Pharaoh I’ll return, and tell you what he found.”
Seto had miscalculated somewhere because Yugi’s eyes hardened. “And how long will that take? Kaiba you have to go home.” Kaiba started to bristle as Yugi’s question, did he think Seto had no chance of beating Atem? But then Yugi’s eyes softened and his next statement almost calmed Seto’s furry. “Mokuba’s really worried about.” And how dare Yugi use his weak point against him. “We’ll head home together.” Yugi’s tone was firm, yet Seto didn’t feel the same instinctual need to lash against it the way he had with Aknamkanon. “Besides,” Yugi smiled gently at him, “Jaden’s excited to meet you.”
Seto was almost convinced. Mokuba missing him was reason enough to return home. Add in Yugi’s soft smile and the mention of his son’s apparent excitement and Seto was almost ready to turn and lead the way back. (And since when had Yugi held so much sway over him? He’d have to analyze that later) But he was a Kaiba and Kaiba’s don’t lose and they don’t back down.
“I’m sure he is.” He responded with all of his self-importance, “but I have a duel to win.”
Atem had watch the conversation up until now. He trusted Yugi to stand on his own. He knew how strong his aibou was. He knew better than anyone how persuasive Yugi could be. But Kaiba had finally gotten on Atem’s last nerve. How many more loses must Kaiba suffer before he leaves? Yugi, as much as he didn’t want him to, had to return home. And Kaiba’s stubbornness was getting in the way.
“Enough Kaiba.” He pushed into their conversation, Kaiba’s eyes slowly dragged themselves from Yugi to look at him. And Atem noticed that. Noticed the way Kaiba’s eyes had started to linger on Yugi, but he’d couldn’t address that now. “I won’t duel you again.” Atem was going to take away his reason for being here. He had nothing to prove, Kaiba had yet to beat him.
“Why? Are you scared to lose?” Kaiba went back to his default response, anger.
Atem just scoffed. “Yugi needs to return home. And he is not leaving without you. I won’t allow you to delay him.” He threw Kaiba’s own desire for Yugi to return back at him. Kaiba started to grandstand, squaring his shoulders and preparing for one of his over dramatic taunts, and while Atem would normally participate, he wouldn’t today. Not when the perfect idea had just came to him.
“Not at all, though I will offer you a deal.” Atem mused drawling Kaiba’s attention. Atem could see Yugi sit up straight and look at him, his aibou paying rapt attention to what would happen next. “If you win I’ll duel you as many times as you want.”
“Once I beat you we won’t need to duel to again.” Kaiba cut in unaware of the twist in Atem’s plan.
Atem smirked. “But if you lose, you must return home immediately. No demands for a rematch, no delaying.” Atem met Kaiba’s eyes making sure that he was paying attention.
Kaiba huffed, knowing Atem could be as stubborn as himself. If he said this is the last time, then it is. At least until death claimed Seto and they could battle for eternity. But Kaiba didn’t want to wait long to defeat the Pharaoh. “I agree.” Atem smirked at him making Kaiba bristle. He knew that face, it was that face Atem made when he had a game winning card in his hand. “Get up. We’re dueling now.”
Atem all but beamed as he leaned forward in his seat, his eyes locked onto Kaiba, a predator staring down prey. “When did I say that I was your opponent?” He then turned his head away from the flabbergasted Kaiba to lock eyes with Yugi. His partner almost jumped, looking at him with wide eyes.
“Me?” Yugi asked pointing to himself like he couldn’t believe what Atem had just done. Atem just smiled comfortingly at his partner. He had no doubt that Yugi would win.
“I refuse.” Kaiba rejected. He wasn’t here to duel Yugi, he was here to duel the Pharaoh.
Atem tilted his head just enough to catch Kaiba’s eye again. “Then I will not duel you. The only way you get to duel me again is if you beat Yugi.”
“Atem I-” Yugi started to worry. What if he lost. What if Kaiba stayed and he had to return empty handed?
But Atem just smiled at him warmly. “I have complete faith in you Aibou.”
Yugi’s fears instantly eased. He had missed this so much. The comfort that Atem’s confidence could bring.
Kaiba growled as he thought over his options. In actuality he had only dueled Yugi once. Right before he had built the machine that allowed him to travel between dimensions. At the time he had believed that Yugi was nothing more that a vessel for the Pharaoh. Believing that he had no skill, that Atem had always been his true rival. But Yugi had surprised him. Yugi should have won their match if it wasn’t interrupted. And he knew Yugi had bested Atem. Atem would not stop mentioning it anytime that Yugi came up in conversation. Kaiba had never seen anyone so pleased to have lost a match.
While he knew that Yugi was talented, and could probably give Seto a similar challenge to that of the Pharaoh, he could duel Yugi any time he wanted. He wasn’t here for that.
And yet as Yugi turned to face him with confidence in his eyes, Kaiba would be lying if he said he didn’t want to rise to the challenge.
“Alright. But when I win,” he pointed at Yugi, “Yugi goes home,” then he moved to point at Atem “and you will duel me until I win.”
“Agreed.” Atem wasn’t worried. Yugi wouldn’t lose. Besides he got the privilege of watching Yugi duel on his own. As much as he desires for Yugi to stay, if he had to leave Atem wanted to see his partner at his best once more.

So, arc 7 is over and rn, I don't know how to feel about it. (maybe doing a proper post about it later when the subs for ep 90 are out)
But: I do give props to Bridge for doing this since I didn't think they would actually go down this route:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me and a couple of other people were believing in Kuaidul and Yudias fusing together like Judai and Yubel did. And at first, it did look like it might happen for real. But then, Kuaidul had a change of heart (?) despite Yudias accepted them becoming one and died while reuniting with the Creator.
I'm not even a huge Kuaidul fan (neither love or hate him) but I think this is my favorite scene of the arc final since Kuaidul can finally see the person he loved the most again even if it means to die for it. (and before people assume things: You can define Kuaidul's love the way you want, I don't care if platonic or romantic)
For an antagonist's death, I think Kuaidul got an ending that is rather... nice? Sure, he dies but he can reunite with his beloved sensei. They could've just fused him with Yudias and so, he would learn to "become a better person" while sharing a body with him or completely ditching the fusion idea and Kuaidul still becomes friends with Yudias and co. while keeping his body. But no, Bridge actually said "yeah, we let our antagonist die after his final duel for once" and I really never expected them to have the guts to do this.
I will admit tho that I'm not 100 % buying in Kuaidul staying dead. The end of the episode said something about all Velgearians are disappearing soon? So either this will really happen (which would explain why no sign of Yudias during Sevens) or they find a way to change the future even more - and that could also potentially mean that Kuaidul can be revived somehow. (it's ygo, so they can pull some bs to make it happen)

Headcanons for Jaden/Judai? Hope u have a good day too <3
You too!! Thanks for caring <3
But, headcanons for Jaden!
He’s cisgender and gay. I couldn’t ever see him having an attraction to woman, even in tag force his character entry says that he’s purely oblivious about woman, and his interactions with Blair and Alexis prove to be purely platonic. Also couldn’t see him as trans unforunately, he’s the biggest cissie but he’s a big ally!!!
Speaking of being an ally he helped Syrus pick out a chest binder and helps him with his T shots. We love to see it!!
He tries to help Chazz with his T shots but as usual, Chazz is a bit tsun tsun and refuses his help until he gets all afraid of the needle and asks for help
Very, VERY physically affectionate. He absolutely smothers Chazz in kisses and hugs and hickeys and bites and so many compliments. He tends to be embarrassing at times but it’s just his way of showing love!
Bastion helps him a lot with his homework, it isn’t going well because Bastion absolutely can NOT tell his hand writing from chicken scratch
Because of the whole childhood trauma regarding Yubel thing I’d like to believe he can’t sleep without anyone around because of his intense fear of being alone. One time Chazz was out for the night and he refused to sleep because he wanted to wait for him to come back. Even though Chazz called him a big idiot for not getting a good nights rest, he was sure to cuddle up next to him and sleep with him
Jaden knows ballet, and he keeps a pair of pointe shoes in his closet. Before he went to duel academy he used to go to a performing arts school before switching.
Has ADHD, my original headcanon for him was autism but I feel ADHD is a better fit. Poor bastard can’t pay attention on SHIT if it isn’t related to Chazz or card games
Probably a furry tbh
On him and Chazz’s first date, to sound sophisticated he said his favourite film was To Kill a Mockingbird when in reality it was the Fred figglehorn trilogy. He has good taste, I must admit
Jadens wardrobe is mainly a mishmash of highlighter colored T shirts with graphic designs, white and black skinny jeans and flat colored sweaters. His selection of shoes are mainly old pairs of Vans and Converse he’s had since middle school. He’s just like me fr!!!
Probably does weed, he deserves to smoke a little weed considering what happened in season 3. He’d benefit from the effects of medicinal marijauna tbh. But he gets all giggly and Chazz has to feed him lots of snacks while he rests his head on his lap
That’s all I have for rn!!! Will edit if I have anymore

Yugi Portrayal NOTES
Tumblr media
Here are just some general notes about my Yugi Portrayal/Style of Writing for him that I thought I should mention before I do any in-character interactions
Yugi will call all Duel Monster Cards/Attacks by their TCG/English names. (Example: Dark Magician instead of Black Magician or Inferno Fire Blast instead of Black Fire Bullet)
Yugi will refer to Atem prior to learning his name as Pharaoh or Spirit or Partner (I personally think 'Other Me', while it does make sense from a storytelling POV, sounds clunky when writing dialogue, so I will be omitting it).
My Yugi story wise is based off of the Manga / Japanese Sub depending on the verse (but since I know the Dub very well I do not mind writing in the Dub context or using the Dub names for any muse, such as calling Atem 'Yami' or Joey for Jonouchi)
His voice claim is Dan Green (because that man's performance has woven its way into my heart).
Yugi's relationship with Atem is a platonic/brotherly relationship from my perspective and that's how it will be portrayed from my Yugi's POV in my writing. This means there will be no content in my portrayal relating to Yugi being romantically attracted to Atem. The same goes for him and Jonouchi / Joey.
By post anime or manga (including things like GX), Yugi is able to communicate with certain Duel Monsters sprits in his deck. Though, his ability is not near the strength of other characters in the franchise like Judai or Ruka.

judai for the ask game? (if it isn't too late)
NEVER TOO LATE i love chattering about yugioh guys....judaijaden my friend my beloved pal
favorite thing about them: wwaughhh judai/jaden is such a good character and i adore his character arc..... i love that he effectively has to learn how to have fun with dueling again (and thats its the King of Games himself who helps remind him of that!), and that you don't have to sacrifice your passion for what you love as you grow up. Real shit. Also he's just,, so fuckin funny (especially in the dub.))--both his dub and sub VAs do such a great job with him.
least favorite thing about them: man season 3!jaden is........rrrrrouuughhhh. not my favorite, the things that season does to his character. s3 is just. kind of clumsy in its execution dfsfdgdf it drops a lot of jaden's most endearing traits and struggles to make those personality shifts fully worth it. i do think s4 helps bring it back around though.
favorite line: IT'S SO HARD TO PICK JUST ONE HE HAS SO MANY GOOD LINES ESPECIALLY IN THE DUB. "Um, I read the card?" "Alright, Ap :^)" "This is no time to be speaking Australian!!" "I guess bear hugs and old people just don't go together :^(" DUB COMEDIC TIMING HITS DIFFERENT
brOTP: WAHH I LOVE HIM AND SYRUS'S FRIENDSHIP thats his BESTIE!!!!! His dynamic with Zane is so good too....honorary truesdale brother. I'm also a bit in the minority in that I much more enjoy thinking about and playing in the space of his bond with yubel being a sort of platonic soulmates situation. yuub being jaden's cool metalhead older sibling type beat 4 lyf round these parts
OTP: sorry for being a heroshipper it's not my fault i just LIKE THEM. his dynamic with aster is just so funny and kind of sweet and im enamored with them. what if we both liked superheroes and we were both boys and we kissed. 😳 (i like a lot of jaden ships though. rival, spirit, fiance..... i do think he'd be kind of a bad boyfriend for a number of reasons so his relationships might not. last. but. at least he has plenty of friends!!!!)
nOTP: just dont vibe much with jadenyubel as a romantic ship im afraid u__u like its fine but not really my jam.... i've talked about it before but the "ive loved you since you were a child" thing that yubel has just works so much better as a platonic read to me than a,, romantic one. sits weird with me otherwise.
random headcanon: god. so many. gay fat trans guy who's gonna grow up to look like jack black. can and will see every superhero movie that comes out. absolute s-tier smash bros player. has a fondness for pokemon firered. i could go on.
unpopular opinion: the aforementioned preferring his dynamic with yubel to be platonic, also season 1 jaden (and season 1 of gx in general!!) fucking rules. masterclass of just peak silly yugioh.
song i associate with them: One of my favorites for him is Odds Are by Barenaked Ladies.... something so upbeat and hopeful to it. "Sure things go wrong, but I'll take my chances/Odds are long, so why not play"
favorite picture of them:
Tumblr media
i love this tag force 3 sprite of him....so cute

haven't talked about my progression in gx as much as I thought I would but I thought I better mention that I absolutely love the little laughs judai makes whenever he is on the verge of losing before proceeding to play a trap or spell or whatever that completely flips the duel in his favor. i can tell this will probably become increasingly terrifying as he develops but right now i think it's cute

sometimes you see a take so bad it makes you want to write a ship you don't even like out of spite. (No one here; Or at least no one following me. The ship in question is Fiance. I normally prefer platonic Judai/Asuka, but... ) (i probably won't do this but BOY THE SALT.)

Part 5 of Yugi raising Jaden
Start - previous - next
Mokuba had been kind enough to send them a car to come and pick them up. The drive was far shorter than the walk would have been. The three sat in relative silence on the way over. All thinking about what was to come once they reach Kaiba Corp.
The building was impressive. Jaden had never seen a building that tall and now he, Yugi, and Joey were going to head inside. But only he and Joey were going to leave.
Jaden didn’t want to admit the anxiety he was feeling. He’d already been abandoned by one set of parents. He knew Yugi wasn’t leaving forever. He had promised, even giving Jaden one of his cards so that Jaden knew he was coming back. But that didn’t mean Jaden wanted him to go in the first place.
When they arrived at the building Joey hopped out of the car with ease. Yugi moved to follow him, planning to help Jaden out once he was outside the car, when a little hand stopped him. He turned to see Jaden who now had a death grip on his shirt.
“Hey bud.” Yugi kept his voice soft. “Want me to pick you up?” Jaden gave a stiff nod, but it was all the confirmation that Yugi needed. He leaned forward and scooped up the little boy, carefully shuffling them both out of the car.
He could hear the driver radioing to Mokuba that they had arrived. He couldn’t hear Mokuba’s reply but the driver told them to head inside and that the younger Mr. Kaiba would meet them soon.
Yugi lead the way inside. Jaden was clinging to him, his little arms and legs wrapped tightly around Yugi’s neck and waist. His face buried into the crook of Yugi’s neck. And Yugi wished he didn’t have to leave him. His boy was scared. Jaden wouldn’t admit it but Yugi could tell he was scaring his son. But Kaiba needs to return, Mokuba needed his big brother, and Yugi needed answers about Jaden’s past. There was no way he couldn’t go. But the fear his little one was experiencing made him wish there was another way.
“Yugi you’re here! Are you ready to- oh.” Mokuba came running towards them. His excitement to get his brother back clear in his voice, but he cut himself off when he got a good look at them. At Jaden clinging to Yugi like a koala.
“Hey Mokuba. I’d like you to meet Jaden.” Yugi greeted their younger friend before turning his attention to the little boy in his arms. “Jaden,” he gently coaxed the boy to raise his head. “This is my friend Mokuba Kaiba.”
Jaden turned his attention to the 12 year old standing in front of them. Mokuba looked at the kid with a bit of awe. It was weird to see Yugi as a father. Not a bad thing, but Mokuba had lost his parent when he was so young, and Gozaburo was anything but fatherly. So Mokuba didn’t have any real ruler to measure fatherhood by. He was practically raised by Seto. But watching as Yugi gently introduced his son to him. As he coaxed him out of hiding and got the boy to smile and laugh, every movement was gentle and kind, as Yugi always was. It made him have a weird feeling in his stomach.
“Uh It’s nice to meet you.” Mokuba remembered his manners just in time to greet the now waving little boy. “Yugi are you ready to go?” He wanted to get this conversation back on track.
“I am. Jaden is going to stay with Joey.” Yugi explained nodding his head towards Joey who shot Mokuba a little two finger salute.
“Hey Mokuba.” He greeted casually.
“Hey Joey.” Mokuba returned the greeting but his eyes quickly tracked back to the little boy in Yugi’s arms. He had to be about the same age Mokuba was when he was adopted by Gozaburo. Mokuba couldn’t imagine going through that without Seto. But seeing how Jaden clung to Yugi the same way Mokuba used to cling to Seto, before Gozaburo worked his teachings into Seto’s heart, it made him realize something.
Yugi was Jaden’s Seto, Jaden’s protector. Mokuba was 12 years old and he still hated when Seto left him for to long a time period, one of the many reasons he was so desperate to bring Seto home, be he knows he was even worse when he was younger. Now he’s the one asking Jaden’s protector to abandon him. How was that fair? But no one else could go after Seto. There had to be something he could do to make this easier on the kid.
“They can stay here.” Mokuba practically shouted at them, taking Yugi and Joey back. Mokuba quickly realized what he had done and tried to regain control of himself. “Like we talked about earlier Jaden and Joey can stay here with me. That way they can get updates on your progress.” This way Jaden could know his protector was safe, and that he was coming home.
Yugi seemed to understand what Mokuba was offering. Mokuba wouldn’t put it past Yugi to know exactly why he was offering it to, he was just that good at reading people. Especially the Kaiba brothers. Yugi’s face softened. “That would be great Mokuba.” He replied before pivoting to Joey, “if it’s alright with you.”
“You kidding. We get to keep an eye on you and live off of rich-boy dime? Sign me up.” Joey was always great at keeping the mood light. While he would never pass up the opportunity to mess with Kaiba, he knew having a tab on Yugi would greatly decrease his own anxiety about the whole thing. And he was sure that it would help Jaden to.
“Then it’s settled. You to can stay with me until Yugi gets back. Now let’s head up.” Mokuba lead them to the elevator that took them to the top floor of the building, that is where the base of Kaiba’s devise lay.
The whole way up his eyes kept traveling to Yugi and Jaden. Yugi was quietly talking to the boy. Telling him stories about his other trips to Kaiba Corp, or just reassuring him that all would be well. And suddenly that funny feeling was back in Mokuba’s stomach.
It wasn’t until Jaden laughed at something that Yugi said, the two smiling softly at each other that Mokuba put together what he was feeling. He was jealous. Yugi had only had Jaden for a short time but he was already taking to the role of his father. He was kind and reassuring. Just in the short time that Mokuba had known about Jaden he could tell that Yugi already put the boy ahead of everything, as his only hesitation in chasing after Seto had been his concern for Jaden.
It made Mokuba wonder what it would have been like to grow up with such a comforting presence. He wondered how his life would have been different. How Seto would have been different, if they had ended up with a man like Yugi rather than a man like Gozaburo. Would Seto smile more? Would he still call him Moky? Mokuba loved his brother, and knew he worked hard for them to have the lives they did, but sometimes he couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened if they had stayed at that orphanage. And now watching Yugi and Jaden, he can’t help but wonder about what would have happened if someone like Yugi adopted them.
“You okay Mokuba?” Yugi asked drawing Mokuba back to the present. He looked up to see all three boys staring at him with varying degrees of worry.
“Yah, why?” Mokuba tried to shake it off. He was fine after all.
“Um, cause we’re at the top dude.” Joey said pointing to the open elevator doors. Mokuba’s cheeks burned. Oh he had really zoned out there huh.
“Mokuba it’s okay if you’re worried about Kaiba. We understand.” Yugi tried to reassure him, but Mokuba shook it off.
“There’s nothing to worry about.” That’s a lie. Why would he have dragged Yugi into this if he wasn’t worried, but Mokuba had been more concerned with covering up why he had zoned out. Now that the words have left his mouth though he realized how dumb they sounded and-
“You’re right.” Jaden spoke with confidence. “Yugi’s going to bring Mr. Kaiba back so there’s nothing to worry about, because Yugi always comes back to me.”
And Mokuba remembers having that level of confidence in Seto. He had that confidence in Seto when he left, but it’s been a month now… no Jaden was right. They were coming back. Yugi would bring Seto back. Because Yugi always comes back for Jaden and Seto always comes back for Mokuba.
“You’re right Jaden. Yugi will bring Seto back no problem.” Mokuba agreed. Yugi had never let Mokuba down. He wouldn’t start now, not with his own son’s faith in the line.
Mokuba turned and lead them towards the machine that would take Yugi to another dimension, to the afterlife.
Yugi was starting to get nervous. Having Jaden and Mokuba’s unwavering faith was nice. He just hoped he could live up to it.
Mokuba walked over to a machine on the side of the room and picked up a bracelet like thing. “Here Yugi hold out your wrist.” He called as he walked back over to them. Yugi balanced Jaden on his hip and held out his dominant hand (the one his duel disk wasn’t strapped to). Mokuba clasped the devise around his wrist and the thing lit up with a soft purple glow. “This will keep track of your vitals while you’re in the other dimension.” Mokuba explained.
Yugi nodded along understand the importance of such a device. He then watched as Mokuba made his way to the center of the room. A pod like devices sat in the center, it had a triangular shape with the point coming to the front and widening as it went back. The top had a dome like structure and he could see a chair inside of the contraption. Mokuba clicked a button and the machine opened up, the top separating from the bottom in front and raising up like a clam shell would.
“This is the how you’ll get to the other dimension. Once you’re inside we’ll start the sequence to send you after Seto.” Mokuba explained.
“So I guess this is it then?” Joey said as he walked over to Yugi and laid a hand on his shoulder. “Be careful out there.”
Yugi smiled brightly back at his friend. “When am I not?”
Joey chuckled. “I mean it Yug. I won’t be there to watch your back.” He paused then making sure he had his friend’s attention. “Just come back safe, and bring rich boy with you.” he tired to make it light with a joke at the end but his worry was bleeding through.
Yugi smiled warmly at his friend. “I’ll come back. Nothings going to stop me.” He then turned his attention to the little boy in his arms. He could see tears welling up in Jaden’s eyes but the boy wasn’t letting them fall yet. “Hey” he called to bring the boys attention to him. “I’m coming back. This isn’t ‘goodbye,’ it’s ‘I’ll see you soon.’ I promise.”
Jaden gave a shaky nod and a weak smile. “Okay.”
Yugi reach his free hand up and tangled it into Jaden’s hair, bring the little one’s forehead close and pressing a kiss to it. “I love you, Jaden. I’ll be back soon.”
Jaden wrapped his arms tightly around Yugi’s neck giving him one final hug. “I love you to.”
Joey moved to stand next to Yugi. With a little prompting Yugi got Jaden to release his grip and move over to Joey’s open arms. Joey propped Jaden on to his hip and shot a big smile at the boy and then at Yugi.
“You’ve got this Yug! We’ll be here waiting when you come back.” Joey cheered as he did a fist pump with his free hand. Then he turned his attention to Jaden, “right littlest buddy?” He said it with a confident smile and a warm tone encouraging Jaden.
The little boy followed his lead sending a big smile Yugi’s way and a little cheer. “Yep! Yugi always comes back.”
Yugi smiled back and moved to take his seat in the devise.
“Alright, we need to get to the control room.” Mokuba called leading Joey and Jaden away. Leaving Yugi alone for a moment while they got everything into position. His hand found its way to his deck, his fingers dancing over the lid as he sent a silent plea for strength and protection to his cards. He could feel their spirits rising to meet him, offering comfort and support. He could do this. He’d get there, find Kaiba, and come home.
“Yugi can you hear me?” He heard Mokuba call over the loud speakers. He looked up and he could see a glass panel on one of the walls that lead to the control room. He could see Mokuba standing next to the glass with Joey and Jaden next to him. Joey was pointing down at the pod and talking to Jaden, before he and the boy both waved to Yugi.
He smiled up at them and waved back. “I can hear you Mokuba.”
“Good. The pod is going to launch you up into the other dimension. Once you’re there a dimensional clone of the pod will stay where you landed. You need to find Seto and his pod. Once you do, get him into his pod and hit the return button, it’s the green one on the right.” Yugi looked over and saw a bright green button on the right of his pod. Thankfully it was the only green button there. “Once Seto is back you can head back to your pod. Just be carful if the pod gets destroyed I don’t have another way to bring you back.”
Yugi could hear the sound of a raised voice but couldn’t hear what they were saying. Looking up though he could see Joey looking at Mokuba and talking very animatedly, so he guessed that Joey was making his displeasure at that news known. “I understand.” He called to get them back on track. “Any time limit I need to worry about?”
“Nope. Just get home soon.” Mokuba responded over the noise on the other line.
“Got it. Well I’m off then. See you guys soon.” Yugi put as much confidence into his voice as he could, wanting to calm both Joey and Jaden’s nerves.
The pod lid closed down around him. He could hear the count down and then suddenly he was thrusted upwards. The glass lid of the pod allowed him to see what looked like space rushing by him at an incredible speed. The force knocking him back into his chair and he had to appreciate Kaiba’s decision to have the chair in a laid back position or else this pressure would be unbearable.
Then just as quickly as it started it ended. The scene in front of his pod was that of a beautiful blue sky. He opened up the pod and looked around and was hit with some serious déjà vu as the desert sand and scenery reminded him of the memory world. He could see a city and palace not far from him and had a feeling deep in his chest, one he almost forgot how it felt, that Atem was there.
He was going to see Atem again.

"There isn't enough of two guys just being friends!" Is such a weird take to me cuz like...
Yugi and Joey, Tristan and Joey, Judai and Manjome, Judai and Sho, Judai and Edo, Yusei and Jack and Crow, Yusei and Bruno (yeah I ship it but it's not canon), Yuma and Shark, Yuma and Bronk, Yuma and Kaito, Yuya and Sora, Yuya and Sawatari, Yuya and Gong, Yuto and Shun/Shay, Yusaku and Takeru, Yusaku and Kusanagi, Takeru and Flame (again I ship it but there's nothing canonical about it), Yuga and Luke, Yuga and Gakuto, Yuga and Roa, Yuga and Nail
And that's just within Yugioh. There are so fucking many. Even outside of Yugioh, I can name just tons and tons of male characters who are just friends and don't end up romantic.
Meanwhile, every single male/female relationship either has one of them (usually the girl) have a crush (Judai and Asuka, Yuma and Tori, Tristan and Miho) or they end up romantically involved in the end (this latter option is admittedly more of a problem in western media since most anime I watch don't like confirming relationships but I could still name so many).
So often I'll watch a movie or show that's not even a romance and they still manage to squeeze in some romantic subplot no matter how forced or pointless it seems. Edge of Tomorrow comes to mind immediately for me, what even was the point of pairing those two outside of "the lead two characters are a man and a woman"? Do we really want to set a precedent that men and women can never be friends? Because this happens. All the time. Indy gets a new girl in every single Indiana Jones movie. Leia was the only woman of the group in the OG Star Wars trilogy so she had to get paired with one of the guys and one of them was her brother so that can't happen. But it was happening romantically (even if only slightly) before they knew. What even was the point of the romantic sideplots in the Equestria Girls movies? Oh and Fox and the Hound introducing a female love interest just so she can be the female love interest. The boy and girl in Mr Peabody and Sherman are both like nine and the movie still insists on pushing a romantic angle between them when one of them tried to choke out the other. Nearly every Disney princess movie gives their lead a prince, with some being more pointless than others. Doppler and Amelia are implied like twice then randomly have children at the end of Treasure Planet. Don't even get me started on Warrior Cats. I could go on but I'll stop for now.
Male/female friendships who stay purely platonic and aren't siblings (Luke and Leia) or different species (Nick and Judy from Zootopia) are so so much rarer than male/male or female/female friendships, which are basically everywhere. And what kind of message does that send? That a man and woman can never just be friends? I'd rather not go into how much this exact mindset ruined or just confused so many of my past friendships so just know that my frustration with this is partially personal.
I'm so tired of the most obligatory milk toast straight couples being shoved into every movie or show I watch, especially if it's said female character's only trait or purpose to the narrative. Meanwhile, LGBT pairings are still fighting for representation in media. Steven Universe and The Owl House were revolutionary in terms of representation and they both got canceled early.
It's one thing if the movie is about romance (ie: WALL-E and Elemental are two of my favourite Pixar movies) but it's another when the romance or one sided crush is just shoved in because "that's what men and women have to be doing." It's a stupid mindset and it needs to stop.
This is why Judai & Asuka, Yusaku & Aoi, and Yuga & Romin being purely platonic matter so much to me.

I read your Spiritshipping story "Morning Coffee" on AO3 and I loved it so much. Trans!Johan is my aesthetic and making Yubel/Ruby their pets was such a cool idea (even though I really can't stand yubel, don't hate me.) I hope you write more in the future!
Aww, thank you! I haven't written for GX in years but I definitely might return to it in the future! I have a ton of ideas for trans!Johan and I feel like it would be a shame to let them go to waste.
I don't mind Yubel as a character but the whole thing between them and Judai...yeah, I really hate it. I'm not going to elaborate too much, because I know people ship it, but I find their relationship creepy to say the least. It really ruined the show for me, tbh. That's why I only ever write Yubel and Judai's relationship as platonic, or have Yubel as some sort of animal in modern!AU.
Thanks for the ask!
