Episode 11

Okay, but why was Rai so late? Surely they’ve been doing this morning routine long enough she shouldn’t have overslept. There’s never an explanation of this, so I wonder if Rae is actually late or if Manaria gets there that much earlier.

“You know, this might be a good opportunity for you to get over Miss Claire.” Blasphemer! Heretic! What kind of best friend are you, Misha? Sure, you two have barely spent any time together since Rae spends all day with Claire and all night doing other nonsense, and she has all these secrets lately, and where was I going with this?

No, no, don’t “put up with it”, fight back! Even if she is trying to provoke you, that doesn’t mean a response isn’t warranted. Just be smart about it so you don’t fall into a trap.

In the game, Manaria was the protagonist’s ally in love specifically. It’s only in Rae’s twisted view that she could be considered in enemy in the first place. Now, this Manaria is behaving differently, but keep in mind that Rae long abandoned the role of “protagonist”. How can Manaria fill her expected role, if Rae has given up on love?

So long as Claire is happy, right? Nothing else matters, not even your own feelings, or your own happiness.

Oh yeah, those two, Pipi and Loretta, still exist. By this point, the novels had already completely forgotten them. The manga is still keeping them around so far.

So the Scales weigh the offerings based on how difficult they are to obtain. The Flower of Flora is the offering known to be the heaviest so it stands to reason it would be “difficult” to obtain, unless you’re an incredibly OP magic user like Manaria.

I was wondering if it would be brought up, since they’re sprinkling information a little at a time instead of one big info dump. Rae doesn’t like “Poesie Amour” as a love story and I kind of agree with her to an extent. Why let the scales decide for you rather than take the initiative yourself?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Manaria knew the pot was already empty. If nothing else, she could easily check the current volume with a bit of subtle wind magic.

Huh, wonder what those two are up to. They’re either running towards Rae, or away from Manaria.

Wow, Claire, I’m surprised you noticed anything about Rae at all, given you’ve only had eyes for Manaria who is intentionally monopolising your time.

Manaria just called Claire out and it went right over her head.

Ah, I think I know why Pepi and Loretta are so freaked out. Even if they haven’t spent much time with Manaria, I’m sure there are plenty of rumours and stories circulating among nobles of both Kingdoms. The funny thing is, Rae should know all those details herself, but any information from the game that didn’t seem useful to her goals has probably been forgotten by now.

Despite her behaviour, Manaria has a point. Romantic love isn’t so selfless, if Rae is truly in love with Claire, then that means she wants to be the one that makes Claire happy, and to have the love returned. Yet, Rae hasn’t tried to form a relationship with Claire, if anything she has kept a certain distance between them. So as Manaria says, either her feelings aren’t nearly as strong as she claims, or she’s a coward.

Claire, you seem nervous for some reason, I wonder who for.

The scary thing about multi-casters, combining multiple elements into even more powerful attacks. Unfortunately that doesn’t just apply to Rae.

Rod, of course she was holding back against you! You’re far too weak to have lasted long in a duel if she had.

Rae started aggressive and busted out all her best, most powerful spells, but as OP as she is, Manaria is several magnitudes above her level.

We’ve seen the attacks Rae could wield with two elements, now we see what happens when you combine all four. They made it look even more brutal than in the manga. Since Dominator turns the target’s own magic against them, it stands to reason the more powerful they are the more damage it does, so it’s incredibly effective against Rae with an Exceptional Aptitude for two elements

It was excessive, but there’s a purpose behind Manaria’s brutality. It makes it all the more clearly that Rae could never have beaten her in a magic duel. Cocytus is Rae’s most powerful attack, and there isn’t much she can do to get stronger on her own.

Claire obviously cares about Rae, it’s just too bad she doesn’t make that clearer. Maybe then, Rae would have had the courage to do things properly.

And now Rae’s spirit has been crushed. This next part is not going to be fun.

ED is a little early this time. We have another four and half minutes of episode left.

It seems seeing Rae hurt has made a bit protective of her, and she’s not even hiding it. Unfortunately Rae is no longer in a state of mind to recognise or appreciate it.

Hey, Claire, remember that whole “love is blind” thing? Seriously, you’re the only person in the whole school who seems clueless about what’s going on.

“I am not some thing to be won!” says the girl who was just defending “Poesie Amour” a little while ago, you know, a story that is all about two men competing over a girl. Look, I get she is angry, and say she has every right to be. I’m just pointing out the hypocrisy.

Claire, I’d advise you against pushing her any further the state she is in… and you just threatened to fire her… and she called your bluff.

Well, as bad as this looks, the arc isn’t over yet. That said, those two idiots aren’t going to figure things out on their own.

Typically, Claire tries to deny her feelings, after making this declaration. Rae and everyone one refuse to believe it. This surprises Rae. She doesn't want to let Claire go. In a post-credits scene, Manaria departs for Sousse. Rae believes that Manaria wanted Rae and Claire to begin a romantic relationship from the start. Many of Claire's friends (like Misha, Loretta, and Pipi) and the Princes, wish Claire the best. They root for her and Rae to marry. Claire likes this idea, saying that Rae would be her bride, before attempting to take it back. Later in the manga, both characters marry. Hopefully, that would be animated if this series is renewed. NOTE: This includes spoilers for the anime AND the manga, so if you don't want to see those, then please turn away and don't read past this paragraph.

In another powerful scene in Watashi, Rae refuses to reveal who she is to Manaria. She says, in an inner monologue, that she is doing all of this to prevent a future tragedy. She shakes Manaria's hand and agrees to take care of Claire. They are some other nice moments. Rae teases Claire. She blushes like nobody's business, since she is having fun with Rae teasing her. The series ends happily for them and was crafted to give them a "happy ever after." However, as Steven Universe told Spinel in the 2019 film (which has conflicting messages on happy endings), "there's no such thing as happily ever after. I'll always have more work to do." The RWBY Volume 8 theme declared, "Happy Ever Never After Again." Both are applicable here.

A possible second season could involve new twists, like Rae's plan, which echoes Mia Tearmoon's efforts in Tearmoon Empire, to avoid Claire's execution (her "downfall ending" as one Q&A puts it). Characters like Lilly Lilium may appear. Storylines which accurately portray sexuality would continue. The latter isn't surprising. The manga's author, Inori, is a lesbian (is possibly trans) and is influenced by various yuri works. She has another recently published yuri novel. It's entitled The Girl Who Wants to Become a Hero <me> and the Girlfriend Who Should Become a Hero <you>. It's not known when an English translation will be available.

I'd love to see some trans characters and perhaps even have some Claire-centered episodes. After all, there are light novel series entitled I'm in Love with the Villainess: She's so Cheeky for a Commoner, from Claire's perspective, and "Claire's Diary" which some fans happily translated. Other fans have even translated all the opening and ending sequences, TV spots, promotional content, Q&A, and more. Even though I highly doubt there would be any criticism of marriage as an institution. Nothing in a future season would echo Young Love. On the other hand, this series is more positive on lesbian romance than others. This is no shock. Rae, throughout the manga, has four women interested in her: Claire, Manaria, Lilly, and Lana Lahna! At one point, Claire even calls Rae a "womanizer" as a result, which surprises her.

Unlike some other anime, the subbed and dubbed versions aired simultaneously. Surely, the Japanese voice actors, including Yu Serizawa and Karin Nanami for Rae and Claire, and Nana Mizuki for Manaria, did an excellent job. Serizawa voiced Mutsu in Love Live! Sunshine!!. Mizuki voiced Airi Amano in D4DJ First Mix and Riko's mother in Love Live! Sunshine!! The same can be said for Princes Rod, Thane, and Yue. They are voiced by Ken'ichirō Ōhashi (also known as Kenn), Daisuke Namikawa, and Yoko Hikasa. All three are talented voice actors. The same is the case for Aimi Terakawa, Ikumi Hasegawa, Sara Matsumoto, Minami Kurisaka. They voice Misha, Lene, Loretta and Pipi respectfully.

Aimi is known as Kasumi Toyama in the BanG Dream franchise and Kyoko Yamate in D4DJ. Hasegawa voiced Sorane Matsuyama in If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die, Desumi Magahara in Love After World Domination, Koito in My Master Has No Tail, Ikuyo Kita in Bocchi the Rock!, Kotoko Nogisaka in Ippon Again!, and Shizuka in World Dai Star. Matsumoto voiced golf mafia boss Charlotte in Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story as well.

English dub voice actors, like Hannah Alyea, Lindsey Sheppard, Corey Wilder, Oscar Seung, Ciarán Strange, Marisa Duran, Kara Edwards, Erin Nicole Lundquist, Abigail Blythe, and Katelyn Barr, are talented too. Alyea, a non-binary actor, who voices Rae, did the dubbed voice for Aoi Inuyama in Laid-Back Camp and for Lumi and the Great Big Galaxy, an indie animation. Sheppard, who voices Claire, is known, in part, for voicing Saphron Cotta-Arc in RWBY, Amy Sibble in Wild Card: The Show, and Kaede in Sasaki and Miyano. Like Alyea, Duran, who voices Misha, is also non-binary, and of Spanish descent. She's voiced a variety of roles. Wilder, who voices Rod, is a non-binary Black man, voiced a wide array of characters.

This also the case for Seung and Edwards. They voice Thane and Lene. Strange is a talented trans non-binary man. Lundquist is Latina, queer, and "military veteran voice actor." Blythe describes herself as a "demi lesbian." She said that voicing Pipi is a "dream come true," noting she'd been a fan of the manga, and was overjoyed to voice "a sapphic character in a sapphic anime." Barr is a seasoned voice actress known for roles such as Hina Hikawa in BanG Dream! and Chiaki in Laid-Back Camp.

While I have criticisms of Watashi, it remains the stand-out series of 2023, with amazing music, and is fun, goofy, serious, deep, and very queer at the same time. Avid viewers and fans may encourage Ichijinsha (the publisher of the light novel and manga) for a second season, per Erica Friedman's suggestion on her site. This series comes when there are many yuri series in 2024. This includes possibly yurish Pon no Michi and Metallic Rouge in January. By April, others with yuri themes will include Nijiyon Animation season 2, Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night, Laid-Back Camp season 3, and Whisper Me a Love Song.

My beloved snake boy!! He goes as a hostage to a foreign land at eleven years old in order to maintain uneasy peace between his country and the empire that colonized them (and on that note, his initial language struggle was so good), then he manages to help keep his love interest safe from thousands of kilometers away via peerless potions skills, then he goes and *wins his nation's freedom* via martial might and court negotiations, and then he heals his man and gets him home. Like bulletpoint by bulletpoint I think he might have actually managed to accomplish the most out of the cast by the end. (Qi Ye is a palace intrigue novel btw, so it's amazing that the one character who had zero patience with palace intrigue was the one who accomplished so much lmao.) And all this while being a 20-something borderline-yandere ML obsessed with his first love. What a man. What a legend. Not to mention his epic healer skills were the reason Zhou Zishu survives Faraway Wanderers. Wenzhou get their happy ending because of him! Also, he hand-raised the most lovable animal sidekick of all time (sable!!!!!) before said sable defected to his husband. Vote for Wu Xi to make sable happy.

Weird how the English edition's title for Priest's Sha Po Lang is Stars of Chaos when the English translation for Shā pò láng is Kill The Wolf [杀破狼 ].

Oh, thank you for reminding me about this post! Gotta add the official title.

Also hey, I actually can tell you the reason for that translation!

You see, "Sha Po Lang" is this… basically it's a pattern in an astrology-based divination system. Here's what baidu has to say about it (MTL):

The pattern of Sha Po Lang represents a kind of turmoil and change. Sha Po Lang likes movement and dislikes stillness. Those with a good structure will be blessed during the movement , and those with a poor structure will suffer disasters and lose money during the movement. It is like the saying, "the tree wants to be quiet but the wind does not stop". The person who lives under Sha Po Lang constellation wanders all his life, with ups and downs, but he has the heroic physique to become famous in one fell swoop. Most of the great generals who fought on the battlefield in ancient times belonged to this kind of fate.

So! For a CN reader, "Sha Po Lang" invokes all that ^^^.

But for an ENG reader, "Kill the Wolf" does not have the same associations. With fate, and stars, and famous generals on fields of battle, and change and turmoil and..........

In other words, "Stars of Chaos" is a translation by meaning. Kind of like... if you saw a reference to a Chinese character wearing a beizi, and you do not haunt hanfu blogs like I do, you'd be able to guess it's clothes, but not much else. But if they were described as wearing "long-sleeved outer robes", that would give you a much clearer picture, right? So I'm guessing that's why the translators went with "Stars of Chaos", instead of more literal "Kill the Wolf" - to give a more clear feeling of what pipi meant when naming the novel.

Btw, I learned all this when in a different novel someone asked a character to divine the fate of another character, and he replied with "Sha Po Lang". And I was like. Wait. That's not just the title of the award-winning author priest's novel?!

For the gaming club, does anyone have any hcs about what genre each member excels at?

I like to think Gema is a jack of all trades but he's really good at mmos and deck building games.

Midori likes jrpgs a bunch but will dabble in some gachas. Only some bc her parents don't want her using her allowance on mobages.

Mai is DEFINITELY the gacha player and simulation/visual novel games but she has a hidden skill in stealth ones.

Ryuto and Pipi like rhythm games but Ryuto likes ones where you have to use taiko drums while Pipi likes ones where you need to move your arms.

Ryuto might play more old style fighting arcade games? Think street fighter or guilty gear. Or some beat em up/hack and slash!

Pipi maybe puzzle and logic games? I like to think she enjoys racing games from time to time.

I'm currently reading Lahtarit, a novel about the Whites in the Finnish Civil War, written by Anneli Kanto. There's a chapter told from a horse's point of view, and the writing style gave me strong Toki Pona vibes, so I decided to translate it.

aku tulis dalam keadaan setengah sadar, untuk yang tidak akan aku sebut namanya.

ini tentang bagai mana aku jatuh cinta tanpa pernah tau wujud manusia nya. lucu ya? kalau di fikir lagi apa yang bisa buat aku jatuh cinta, padahal hanya beberapa jam berbicara lewat telfon. coba dibaca siapa tau kalian juga jadi jatuh cinta.

namanya bagus, tapi gabisa aku sebut. aku panggil nya bubub. karna dia terus ledekin aku pake username instagram aku (bubibubiku).

bubub itu laki-laki yang dingin, padahal aslinya penuh kehangatan. makanya aku jatuh cinta.

ditengah perjalanan pulang dengan hati sedikit tenang tapi penuh kelelahan tiba-tiba ada pesan dari instagram yang dikirim bubub pertama kalinya setelah beberapa minggu menjadi penonton story random instagramku. isi pesannya "haha ada aja gemes tapi" begitu kira kira ya bub?

agak sedikit kaget, karna laki-laki dengan 128followers ini mengomentari story instagram ku yang aneh. setelah di balas pesannya dia tidak membalas lagi.

ada hari lagi dimana hari ku yang setiap hari lelah tiba-tiba di notice oleh laki-laki ini. pesan-pesan yang buat aku sedikit ingin tau maksut dan tujuannya. sampai setelah beberapa pesan singkat-singkat yang saling kami kirim membuat bubub memutuskan untuk membuat sebuah "lamaran" yang di kirim ke whatsapp yang sudah bubub minta dari aku. isinya panjang intinya mau ngelamar jadi suami yang akhri katanya buat aku tersenyum sampai pipi pegel ya bub. "Besar harapan saya untuk di beri kesempatan, dan dapat menjelaskan lebih mendalam mengenai diri saya. Saya mempunyai Kondisi Kesehatan yang baik, Setia, Jujur, Ulet ,dan Seorang Pekerja Keras" (begitu isinya)

sampai akhirnya memutuskan melakukan interview melalui telfon yang berakhir nemenin bubub tidur sampai 7 jam. yang paling buat aku senyum ga henti-henti tiap kata-kata yang bubub bilang sedikit tapi penuh keyakinan.

tutur nada bicara yang tidak pernah aku dengar tapi mengapa begitu terdengar sangat nyaman? semua kata-kata yang dituju selalu tentang keingin tahuan nya tentang hidupku, dia hanya bertanya lalu mendengar. pertanyaan yang sebenarnya sangat biasa seperti;

: suka makanan manis?

: buah yang paling disuka?

: kalau jus?

: lagu yang paling di suka?

begitu dan masih banyak lagi, sampai akhirnya memberiku sedikit harapan untuk bisa mendengar lagu favorit bubub "sampai jadi debu" sambil liat senja dan bercerita tentang semua novel favoritnya karna aku kurang suka membaca, aku lebih suka mendengar bubub berbicara tentang yang dia suka. sambil makan buah pir yang paling bubub suka. kenapa suka pir? "karna manis, terus banyak airnya" katanya.

bagaimana aku tidak jatuh cinta?

bubub ini laki-laki yang kata-kata nya membuat aku mengerti bahwa omongannya serius tanpa harus diulang. dan aku bisa yakini.

bubub bilang kalau kami bertemu dia akan mengajak ku keliling komplek untuk ngumpulin anak kucing, karna aku mau anak kucing. sedikit sudah terbayang kesenangannya padahal belum saja terjadi. membangun impian-impian yang membuat aku sedikit berfikir lebih jauh padahal sehari-hari cuman mikirin apa yang terjadi hari ini saja. sungguh membuat ku senang, dalam hati selalu terucap "akhirnya ya tuhan, ini dia"

sebenarnya ini kisah singkat yang bisa aku tulis di buku berhalaman seratus lembar, bagaimana mungkin? aku juga tidak pernah menyangka. ucapannya selalu terbayangkan olehku. bahagia kecil, bahkan sudah merencanakan keluarga kecil yang menyenangkan. bagaimana dia menjadi seorang ayah yang akan mencari anak perempuan nya bila diajak pergi tanpa izin. hahaha hari yang sudah ada bayangannya di kepalaku.

menentukan tanggal,bulan,tahun yang akan menjadi hari paling aku tunggu bahkan hari ulang tahunku saja sepertinya tidak pernah aku tunggu dengan perasaan sebahagia itu. perasaan yang pasti akan membuat aku menjadi wanita paling beruntung bisa menjadi bagian dari laki-laki yang pola pikirnya begitu damai, stabil, dan penuh kasih sayang.

setiap detik membuatku berfikir. wah ada laki-laki seperti bubub ini ternyata, mengubah pandanganku terhadap laki-laki. sebenar-benarnya dari semua kata yang aku tulis belum ada yang bisa mewakili betapa aku sanggat kagum dengan sosoknya. betapa tenang nya cara bicaranya, cara dia memutuskan sesuatu, bahkan hubungan kami.

hal yang sebenarnya tidak ingin aku jelaskan dan lanjutkan. tapi yang intinya kita benar-benar tidak di perbolehkan bahagia di atas luka orang lain. yang buat aku dan bubub memutuskan untuk tidak melanjutkan impian-impian kecil kami. atas kesalahanku memperlakukan seseorang yang sangat penting di hidup bubub dari pada aku pastinya.

ternyata aku tidak bisa asal bahagia. aku harus sibuk dengan menghukum diri sendiri yang sembarangan ini.

sebenarnya tidak ada yang aku sesali, bubub menjadi pelajaran yang paling penting dalam jalan hidupku yang belum bertemu tujuannya ini.

aku tau bubub ini laki-laki yang tidak bisa di ubah keputusannya, tapi setelah itu aku tetap menjadi manusia yang paling egois karna memintanya di setiap do'a ku. berharap tuhan bisa sedikit saja memberiku bahagia yang aku impikan, meski itu kupon akhirku yang di berikan tuhan pasti akan aku gunakan untuk menjadi bagian dari bubub, karna aku bukan hanya sekedar ingin.

walaupun bagi bubub ini sudah akhir dari segalanya, tapi akhir dari ceritaku hanya jika tuhan beri aku izin bersama bubub, atau tuhan beri aku rasa lapang dada untuk ihklas mengubur rasa ku untuk bubub.

aku tidak kesal atas keputusan bubub, keputusan yang tidak gegabah menurutnya. meski menusuk hatiku dan merubah hariku yang sangat amat senang karna anting yang aku beli dipujinya, lalu mendengar suaranya setelah lagi-lagi hariku yang melelahkan.

aku tidak pernah tau seberapa ada peran aku di hidup bubub yang panjang, sedang aku sangat singkat untuknya. tapi bubub di perjalanan hidup aku begitu sangat mengesankan. tidak akan terlupakan, walau hanya menjadikannya tulisan-tulisan yang akan selalu aku baca berulang kali sampai usang jika itu ku jadikan novel. pasti akan selalu aku ingat di halaman mana dia sangat ingin makan indomie sedikit berkuah buatanku. dan tentu halaman-halaman indah lainnya.

sedikit cuplikan do'a yang selalu aku bilang ke tuhan "beri dia (sambil sebut namanya) pasangan yang bisa masak indomie sedikit berkuah yang paling enak, agar dia selalu senang. dan agar aku senang beri aku dia (sambil sebut namanya lagi) karna indomie sedikit berkuahku yang paling enak" egois bukan?

tak apa, karana yang paling dan hanya bisa aku lakukan cuman itu saja. bahkan bubub saja tidak ingin tau tentangku lagi, benar-benar tidak di beri kesempatan untuk memohon atau memperjuangkannya. padahal sebenarnya aku juga tidak akan pernah punya keberanian untuk memohon untuk dia tetap bersamaku.

bagaimana aku bisa jadi iri dengan novel favoritnya, buah pir kesukaannya. itu karna hal itu bisa jadi bagian yang paling dia senangi, kenapa aku tidak?

aku ingin menjadi pir yang paling manis, aku ingin menjadi novel yang dia suka jika itu bisa membuatnya sedikit lebih lama bersamaku. aku ingin menjadi lagu-lagu yang paling sering dia dengar, aku ingin jadi apapun asal menjadi bagian di hidupnya lalu punya peran di hidupnya.

akhir dari tulisan ini aku sanggat ingin berterimakasih kepada ibunya, karna melahirkan laki-laki sangat manis semanis buah kesukaannya ke dunia. berterimakasih karena diberi sedikit kesempatan pada semesta yang mengizinkan kami berbincang-bincang. karnanya aku sedikit punya harapan atas hidup yang aku kira tuhan tidak pernah mendengar do'a-do'aku.

bahagia selalu, senang selalu dan bersenang-senang selalu di bumi. terimakasih bub telah hadir di dunia yang luas ini, lalu hadir diduniaku yang kecil ini.
