The making of painted stones
Tumblr media
Well, a few times I was asked to show the process of miniature paintings on stones, and here is my first attempt to capture and explain it. Warning - I only have my phone's camera at my disposal, so the quality is not very good.
Firstly - an idea for the image. Every stone has something in its pattern that can be a starting point for developing an imagery. The stone I picked for this one is a beautiful Picasso jasper, and in this case I was looking for a stone for a specific idea I've already had in mind. Spontaneous improvisation dictated by the stone's pattern is also great but I decided to pick something more definitive for better illustrating the process.
Tumblr media
This jasper's pattern already has outlines that can be developed into a landscape without painting it over too much. I don't like it when stones are just mindlessly covered by slapping a random image on it, ignoring the colours, textures and patterns.
Tumblr media
Here's the idea - ruins of an amphitheatre overgrown with red gladioluses. I know, I know, but I'm very interested in the initial mystical sacrificial background of gladiators. So here it is, arena covered in red, swords in the sand, but it's finally quiet.
Tumblr media
Before we start, a stone must be varnished - minerals are porous, and lacquer smoothes its surface. I paint with tempera - most artists who work in lacquer miniatures use oils, but tempera allows quicker process, which is important for me. I'm autistic and my executive dysfunction makes working with oils difficult - my sudden bursts of activity won't match with drying timings and such. So, tempera for me.
Tumblr media
Starting with sketching the outlines of the ruins and painting our light source, the sun and red clouds. I'm trying to work with a palette that the stone already has and make the painting as harmonious as possible.
Tumblr media
Erasing auxiliary lines as we continue.
Tumblr media
Done with the first layer - the walls and the sky. After the paint dries, I apply varnish (I use Novol clearcoat, car varnish - it's very durable). There can be as many layers as you need.
Tumblr media
Now - the flowers and details.
After the painting is finished, it'll need several layers of varnish. And some fine sandpaper (1500) in-between the finishing layers for better grip.
And here it is! time to think abou a necklace for this one.
I'm not sure how useful I can be and what aspects you would like to know, so feel free to ask. I'm not sure I can make a good enough video with my current phone, so this'll have to wait. I tried to skip all the musings about ideas and finding stories, but whatever. And the time needed for work - I don't know. There was a month-long pause in the making of this one, due to a couple of emergencies that knocked me down for some time, and it's not easy for me in general due to my mental state - sometimes I can make a painting in two days, sometimes it takes years, nothing is certain with me, especially now. But well, here's what I do.

What sort of beads would you suggest to represent the different lgbtq+ flags? Sorry if it takes a while/multiple posts, there are a lot of flags XD particularly interesting in the ace flag and the general pride flag.
No apologies needed hun (forgive the pet name, I call everyone hun lol)! I'm a member of the community myself - specifically grey-ace pan - so the LGBTQ+ themes are very close to my heart. In fact, I've been considering having a staple line of bracelets for specific causes/ meanings, and one of the two branches I was looking at is just that!
I apologise for taking so long to respond, but given the number of flags and the number of crystals I have, I wanted to make sure I gave them a good, proper think-through, rather than randomly assigning them. While they may be assigned more for color than meaning, that doesn't mean they should be arbitrary, after all.
I will actually do a separate post for the flag category as a whole, since there are such a large number of them, but I did give a lot of thought to these two in particular, both because they're so close to home and because those were the ones you were most curious about.
I think, for the general pride flag, I would go for a chalcedony mix for the flag portion of the bracelet and then something like an obsidian or tourmaline for the remainder, to make it 'pop', or any bead preferred, really. That may sound lazy, but I feel that using all different colors of chalcedony not only allows for the bracelet to have a coherent 'tone' to the rainbow beads (same transparency and vibrance all across), but it represents equality that way - no one bead is 'better' or 'more valuable' than the rest, since all are versions of the same crystal. Yes, they're dyed crystals, and I normally lean toward the natural ones if I can, but in this instance, I think there's no beating them, really.
As for the Ace flag, that one gave me a bit more pause, because I wanted to be as careful as I could when it came to design. What I ended up with were two possible designs. Each would be on a band of whichever crystal was preferred (so it could be Tea Jasper or Sodalite, or anything that was calling to you), but would be surrounded on each side (as would the Pride flag) by a Clear Quartz bead, to mark off the flag itself. These were the designs I thought of (with some help from my partners):
Black Tourmaline, Picasso Jasper, White Agate, Amethyst
Black Obsidian, Picasso Jasper, White Agate, Lepidolite
Both schemes include Picasso and White Agate because I feel they bring the best colors for the flag, but with one, you have more transparency in the colors, while with the other, there's more opacity. Also, the former pattern is designed with the non-VIP Black Tourmaline in mind, as it has quartz inclusions in it. This, to me, signifies that there are a wide variety of types of Asexuality on the spectrum, and all deserve to be counted.
I hope that helps, and I promise to make a series of posts with the other flags in the very near future!
Thanks for the question!

Whoops I did two posts about works at a Picasso exhibit at Skarstedt in NYC:
One is about this copy of a Picasso Reclining Nude, which Jasper Johns made, after seeing it reproduced upside-down in ARTnews in 1998:
Turns out Johns loves his Picassos.
Tumblr media
The other is about how Richard Prince loves his Picassos, too, and in fact, Johns and Prince have a surprising amount in common, including their interest in painting from reproductions of Picasso, collage, and getting called out for appropriating other peoples' images.

Last post got be thinking about that silly trope where a hitman/assassin/murderer has to suddenly take care of a kid and all the shenanigans involved with trying to be nice/preserve their innocence despite the fact that they... You know... Kill people for a living.
Anyway thoughts about OCs and suddenly having to take care of a kid?
it's been on my mind, I had to make a small post to feed the worms eating my brain.
I think Jasper would be trying to preserve any innocence he could, he loves kids, he wants the world to be good for them for as long as possible. His childhood was ruined early but that doesn't mean he wants anyone else's to be broken apart either.
Lee would have tired dad energy the entire time, but he'd still love them and be sure they're safe and eating correctly. "Do your work yet? Did you brush your teeth and shower? Alright then, come here, let me show you some neat science experiments"
Grey would be a bit awkward, as he's terrified he might accidentally hurt them, he doesn't want to turn out like the family he barely remembers. So he'll chill with them, play games, try to be a good role model, but he feels like someone else would be better qualified
Dexter would be over the moon and wouldn't be capable of leaving them alone. He's always so proud of anything they make, if its a stick drawing he says it's better than Vincent and Picasso. Major Proud Dad Energy
Ezrol would be indifferent in the beginning. Annoyed and not wanting anything to do with the brat. But slowly he lets his heart melt and starts giving into small things such as silly cartoons or weird art projects they wanted to try. He acts like he threw away the "junk" but it's very clearly kept in his room on his dresser or wall. Always checks in on them as they grow up, wanting to cry like an actual parent as time passes because "They grow up so fast"
August is the cookie cutter perfect dad who makes sure to use manners, be polite, be kind, and clean up. He'll have his more strict moments sometimes, but he's a real loving father figure who wants to be sure the kid is happy healthy and knows they're safe and loved no matter what. Also a really good cook at BBQs. Wears the "best dad" aprons all the time.
CEO would be the spoiling type, but only after you've earned it so to speak. If you do your work you'll be rewarded. Might also really love wearing the dad outfits they pick out to match. I'm talking atrociously colored and doesn't even match but it's their outfit choice for him, so to him it's a great fashion statement.
Victoria is used to handing care off to nanny's and what not, but she'd try. She's so business oriented the CEO would love to hire her. she's a more strict mother figure, but it's so the kid can get ahead in life when they can. Thinks kids are gross personally but isn't going to be a bitch if asked to house and care for one, she'll just take a while to warm up and be a good influence is all.

Picasso Masterpiece 'Femme à la montre' Sells for $139 Million at Auction
A Picasso masterpiece entitled “Femme à la montre” fetched more than $139 million on Wednesday, becoming the second most valuable work by the artist ever sold at auction.
The 1932 oil painting took center-stage at a two-day event at Sotheby’s in New York, at the sale of late philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau’s private collection.
The piece, which measures 51¼ x 38 inches (130 x 96.5 centimeters), depicts Picasso’s lover and “golden muse” Marie-Thérèse Walter, who featured in many of his portraits.
According to the auction house, the portrait is from one of the most prolific years of the Spanish artist’s career, which was the subject of an entire exhibition organized by the Musée Picasso in Paris and London’s Tate Modern in 2018.
In a statement announcing the sale in September, Julian Dawes, Sotheby’s head of Impressionist & Modern Art for the Americas, said: “Picasso’s ‘Femme à la Montre’ is a masterpiece by every measure. Painted in 1932 — Picasso’s ‘annus mirabilis’ — it is full of joyful, passionate abandon yet at the same time it is utterly considered and resolved. Its bold primary colors sing from the five-foot-tall-canvas.”
Picasso first met Walter in Paris in 1927 when she was 17 years old and he was still married to his first wife, Olga Khokhlova, a Russian-Ukrainian ballet dancer. Walter would become the inspiration for some of his most sought-after canvases, drawings and sculptures.
As time went on, Picasso found it increasingly difficult to hide his feelings for Walter from his work — something that became clear during his first large-scale retrospective and finally ended his marriage.
The artist painted “Femme à la montre” in August 1932, soon after the retrospective at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris ended.
According to Sotheby’s, “the sense of release from keeping secrets about his affair seem to have spilled out onto this extraordinary canvas, in which he gives full painterly rein to new-found freedoms, drenching the painting in strong primary colors and beautiful forms, while at the same time paying careful attention to every small detail, creating a composition that is both intensely complex and deeply harmonious.”
Picasso died in 1973, and Walter in 1977.
The painting is one of about 120 from the collection of Fisher Landau, a world renowned contemporary art collector who died earlier this year aged 102, according to The Art Newspaper.
The two-part sale, which concludes Thursday, also includes works by Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning and Georgia O’Keeffe. The collection is expected to sell for over $400 million overall. Other big-ticket items auctioned on Wednesday included one of Jasper Johns’ iconic American flag paintings, which went for $41 million, and an Ed Ruscha artwork — an oil painting emblazoned with the word “Boss” — that fetched more than $39.4 million.
Fisher Landau began seriously collecting after receiving an insurance payout following an armed robbery of her jewelry at her New York home in 1969.
In an interview for an exhibition catalog, quoted in the Sotheby’s statement, she said of the episode: “Even though Lloyds of London paid up, there was no way to replace that collection. It was so beautiful. And they got it in one fell swoop…. I was devastated. But I decided that I didn’t want the jewelry any more. I now had seed money for a collection.”
Last year, Picasso’s most curious painting of Walter, in which she appears as a tentacled sea creature, sold for $67.5 million at Sotheby’s in New York.
Picasso’s portraits of Walter have become highly sought-after, with his other 1932 works “Femme assise près d’une fenêtre (Marie-Thérèse),” selling for $103.41 million in 2021, and “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust,” selling for $106.5 million in 2010.
In May 2015, Picasso’s “Les femmes d’Alger (Version “O”) sold at Christie’s in New York for $179.4 million — at that time, the highest price ever paid for a work of art at auction.

a christmas wish (a bellarke christmas au)
When they were first tentatively becoming friends, Bellamy let it slip that he’d never had a big Christmas growing up. There may have been a little alcohol involved (It wouldn’t be a proper Jordan & Green Holiday Party without some spiked punch.) but she could see the way his eyes glimmered with something nostalgic, something yearning, as he talked about the Christmases Octavia and him had.
How their tree was a little one that sat on a table, how the closest they got to snow on Christmas was watching movies, how some years he even wrapped his own small gifts when his mom was too busy working three jobs to have time to do it before Christmas. He was grateful that they even had them, but having to pretend he didn’t know what he got took away from the magic a little bit.
Clarke may have also been tipsy at the time, but she never forgot about how gentle his voice was or how soft his eyes looked when he told her about it. It was the first time she ever saw him like that.
Six years later, Clarke has a plan.
It took three years of friendship, one year of being friends with benefits, another half a year dating, and one year of being engaged, so this is their first Christmas as a married couple. Bellamy’s been working abroad for a couple months, which has been harder than Clarke had even anticipated, but when Bellamy confirms he’ll be home on Christmas Eve, Clarke immediately sets her plan into action.
Plan Give Bellamy The Biggest And Best Christmas Ever.
She spends all of December planning and decorating. Clarke makes sure every inch of their house is covered in lights and garland and holiday cheer, even their two-year-old puppy Picasso gets in on the action. She works for weeks making their little home look like the set of all of his favorite Christmas movies all wrapped up into one big present.
And when the day comes, she gets to watch the way his eyes light up as he takes it all in, she gets to see that yearning turn into pure joy as he picks her up and spins her around, whispering sweetly in her ear as he buries his face in her hair, the lights twinkling around them and Picasso’s happy barks in their ears.
She didn’t know back then that she was planning it all from the start, that she wanted to be the one that he shared his Christmases with. But getting to put that smile on his lips, and getting to kiss them too, she thinks she has probably wanted that ever since that night they shared in Monty and Jasper’s old apartment.
Best Christmas Ever.
(Well, until next year, when Clarke gets him a onesie with a spaceship on it that says Best Dad In The Universe across the front. But they have plenty of years to have a new Best Christmas Ever, as long as they spend them together. And they will.)
