The orangutan doesn't seem stressed or upset but I know you guys have said stuff about disliking people performing tricks to get reactions from primates. I'm mostly curious as to why the baby watched so intently and then proceeded to do a backwards roll for seemingly no reason.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of magic/tricks for primates because you never know if the animal will end up feeling threatened by your interaction. This particular video is cute, however. If you tried this same interaction with chimpanzees or macaques, you would have seemed like a threat with those quick hand movements towards the animal.

The backwards roll wasn't for no reason, this was play! The orangutan seems to be able to tell the kid is being playful and the orangutan is being playful back. Orangutans really enjoy rolling as a play behavior and that behavior also gets them positive attention from onlookers.

Even though this particular video is rated as cute I strongly urge readers to not follow this example. This interaction could have gone sour very quickly and copying this could lead to a stressed animal.

Last week, we had a young Chacoan peccary (or "tagua") born to parents Pebbles and Cheerio on our Chacoan peccary habitat! This is a Species Survival Plan (SSP) recommended birth to one of the two females that arrived from San Diego and were introduced to our tagua herd earlier this year.

In fact, this is the first birth of this species at the Phoenix Zoo since 2014 and it marks our return to active participation in breeding per SSP recommendations.

Our newest arrival along with the rest of the herd is visible at the Chacoan peccary exhibit so stop by and enjoy the cuteness!

He, as the oldest of the family (at least sibling-wise) has been given the sacred task of bringing his baby siblings to find their own familiars! And nothing is going to stop him from seeing this task through! He’s not going to get distracted playing with the Justice League’s Baby Team, nor is he going to try and kick Stupid-Helmet-Head-The-Despised. 

He’s going to help Jordan and Ellie find their own familiars, and Phantom-Dad will be so proud of him! Tucker-Dad will be proud too, and his Moms would as well! He’s going to absolutely rock this older-sibling thing!

#OTD in 1919 – The birth of Cairbre, the MGM lion, in Dublin Zoo. He wasn’t African or even Californian, he was a genuine Dub and was named after Cú Chulainn’s charioteer, or a High King of Ireland.

Cairbre, later re-christened Leo and the first MGM lion to roar on the silver screen. The problem is, there were at least 5 MGM lions, all of whom were rechristened Leo. The most likely candidate is this one, photographed being filmed in the early 1930s. Hear him roar (or gently growl) in the MGM video. Cairbre is recorded in the RDS records as having sired 24 cubs, before being put down in 1944…

Happy Birthday! I hope you like the stamp! Sorry if you had to pay. I think it's valid but I couldn't not send you a stamp of the time you petted a wolf. I didn't even know they existed until a few months ago!

Anyway. I found the website for that camp you're going on, and they had a list of recommended supplies. I know there's a hardship fund but I don't know if you qualify and mum and dad won't pay more than the bare minimum if you don't so anyway, what I'm saying is, here's some things for your summer. Only small things, I couldn't post anything bigger.

I know it's not your birthday or Christmas but look what Aaron found in the zoo shop! It's a 3D wolf card! So I had to send it to you and I am not waiting over four months for you to get it!

Anyway. Kai and Aaron took me to the zoo for my birthday and the wolves loved Kai so much! There's photos so you can see just how much. And it was so much fun and the reptiles were so cool! I got to hold a Komodo dragon! There's more photos, Kai and Aaron insisted on taking lots.

Maybe I can see you again when you move out? It's been so long. You'd love Kai.
