The Importance of "He lives rent free in each of our hearts"
No, I am not exaggerating when I am saying this joke has layers of subtext. What Cyno says in the Parade of Providence is not only a joke about the nature of Alhaitham in their friend group, but also a hint towards the evolution of Cyno and Alhaitham’s relationship.
1- The Context
The first thing to note is the conversation that surrounds this joke. Previously, the conversation was:
Collei: That’s a good thing… It means you have integrity.
Kaveh: Thank you, oh my god, thank you… See, you get me Collei!
Kaveh: It’s a good thing Alhaitham isn’t here right now… He’d be quick to explain why you’re wrong.
Collei: Seems you always include him in the conversation, even when he isn’t here…
Tighnari: Yep. No dinner with Kaveh is complete without a few words about Alhaitham.
Now, the easy thing to latch onto is the fact that Kaveh apparently talks extensively about Alhaitham. However, let’s consider what else is said. Kaveh’s statement is certainly an insight into the nature of his and Alhaitham’s relationship- that being one of opposing forces, people who fundamentally do not mesh due to differences in experiences and worldview.
Tighnari’s following statement is sarcastic, and is an obvious indication of the familiarity of this. Because of Kaveh and Alhaitham’s opposing natures, it is only natural that they clash.
But how does this tie into what Cyno says? Well, Kaveh’s statement is antagonistic, meant to express his negative feelings towards Alhaitham by assuming that he’d say the worst about him. Tighnari’s is not positive either, but not exactly negative- simply, it’s exasperation towards the entire situation. However, what Cyno has to say is more positive, both that it’s a lighthearted joke, and that offers a glimpse at the much more friendly feelings that Cyno holds towards Alhaitham.
2- The Joke
Cyno: I sense that Alhaitham has in fact been here with us all along…
Kaveh: He’s here? Where!? Why didn’t you tell me?
Cyno: …He lives rent free in each of our hearts.
There’s a lot to unpack here. First to note, is that this is all too easy to brush off as a friendly joke. And on some level it is, which is in of itself, really telling. When Cyno and Alhaitham first fought in Aaru Village, neither… liked each other, let’s put it that way. But throughout the Sumeru Archon Quest, they clearly grew to respect one another’s characters and grew to form a partnership. The fact that Cyno can joke so easily about Alhaitham speaks to a major change in dynamic.
Now, the punchline. This is by far the most fascinating part to me. Saying someone or something “lives rent free in [your] head” is a common term on the internet now, and put in simplest terms, means you think about it a lot. But then, why heart?
Well, the brain tends to symbolize rationality, thinking, and planning. If something lives rent free in your head, you think about it a lot. While the term is usually connected to a positive connotation, that what you are thinking of is something that makes you happy, it can easily dip into negativity. However, the heart is different. It tends to symbolize emotionality, love, and sometimes life. Cyno saying Alhaitham lives rent free in their hearts and not their heads creates deeper intimacy, making the statement very clearly personal. And tying back into the previous section, neither Kaveh nor Tighnari were expressing positive emotions about Alhaitham, making the statement seem out of place. But it makes much more sense when it is not taken as a mere joke; rather, it is an expression Cyno’s connection to Alhaitham.
3- Conclusion
One final thing to note is that Alhaitham is not present when Cyno makes this joke. So, one, this could mean that this is an expression of emotionality that Cyno is comfortable making about Alhaitham, just not towards him, implying that he has come to terms with his feelings about Alhaitham but has not deciphered what Alhaitham feels about him. Two, the Traveler is unaware of their relationship, hence why the player doesn't pick up on anything, but everyone else is, and Cyno just wants to express that he loves his boyfriend very much.
In short, Cyno loves Alhaitham, even if no one else has anything good to say about him.

Temptation
Summary: Vincenzo is feeling parched.
Author's note: These two have been living in my mind rent free lately, I'm just shallow and they look so damn good together and when you add the chemistry, well I'm a goner. Just a little drabble based on today's episode, I'm taking a break from BMTL this weekend because it's going to be another 10k probably and it's the first weekend I'm off with my bf so I promised not to ignore him to write all day lol. Update soon though!
Bon appetit!
Tumblr media
Wispy dark lashes flutter just above her high cheekbones as she awaits the blow, her pretty face scrunched up in anticipation as a minor twitch in her lip distracts him.
That's been happening far too often lately, more than he'd care to admit. It was easier when she was blindly following Babel and refused to see the insidious truth about the morally bankrupt company, it was easier to pacify his attraction when she was the bad guy. Not that he was the right candidate to judge, he'd done notifiable heinous things in his life. Her father had been the first person to look at him like he was worth something, like the evil that lurked under his skin could be used for something good.
But her eyes had been opened, in the end she had chosen her father. If only he'd been here to see it.
That decision unhinges the small grapple he has on his control, he finds himself looking at her all the time cataloging the many emotions that distort that expressive face. She's like a living caricature and instead of finding that off-putting he's intrigued and mesmerized. Constantly battling with his lips that won't stop rising in her presence, he's not someone who smiles lightly. Has never had much of a reason to.
Until now.
"What are you waiting for? Just do it." She whines impatiently, squirming side to side and pursing her full lips.
That small move captures all his attention, eyes locked on the rosy pink skin. Instinctively he steps forward until he can feel her body heat, her face is even more captivating up close. She was beautiful, that wasn't hard to admit he was a man after all and his eyes were functional. It was.... everything else that he couldn't admit, not even to himself.
Just do it.
If only she knew what those words did to him, he felt as if he was lit in flames by his own lighter; burning up just from his prolonged vicinity to the loud lawyer. She was being her usual brazen self but she had no idea, not the slightest inkling of what exactly he wanted to do to her. It usually ended in passionate screams in his dreams. Her wild abandon was a thing of beauty, he didn't even mind the mess on his silk sheets because his mind supplied such vivid imaginings.
Staring down at her he wonders how she would taste, perhaps like the spicy noodles she was so fond of or maybe something sweeter and forbidden, once you peeled back the many layers you would discover something so delicious it was addicting. She would be his ambrosia.
"Come on, you're killing me! What's taking so long?" She grumbles now pouting, plush bottom lip jutting out enticingly and his finger hovers in front of her forehead but he can't move, can't bring himself to hurt her no matter how insignificant the hit. Somehow this woman has weaved a web around him, he feels like a fly caught in a spider's deadly but beautiful trap.
What's wrong with me?
There must be indeed something wrong with him because he feels his hand unfurling and lowering until he's nearly cupping her jaw, the delicate point barely above his hand. He's so tempted. Taking another step forward he lifts his second hand, curling around the dip of her lower back. She's so petite despite her loud bark, her entire body could fit easily in his hand.
He wants to lower his hand, grab her face and her waist and.... And what? What is he thinking? This is not why he came to Korea. He wasn't supposed to get involved more than he needed to and he knows no good can come of this, there's only one outcome for men who are lured by seductive sirens. He has to ignore her song no matter how much his body aches when he's with her. Woman have never been elusive in his line of work, gorgeous Italian women who opened up for him easily, surrendering under his capable hands. They were nothing but a good time, a perfunctory scratching of an itch. But, Cha-young he wants to wreck her, take her apart piece by piece until she's putty in his hands.
"What are you doing?" She says sounding amused and he lifts his eyes to find her twinkling ones already on his face. She looks at the twin hands hovering above her body with a raised brow, face now turned into the hand adjacent to her cheek.
"Do you want to change the specifics of our deal?" She teases darkly and he gulps, finally lowering his hands but twisting them around his back to prevent himself from making a huge mistake.
"No." He lies, trying to douse the fire that is blazing in his blood.
"Aishhh. You're such a bad liar." She huffs, nose crinkled up in disbelief and he hates the way his heart smarts his lips twitching to form a smile. He feels so warm and he doesn't know what any of it means.
"Come here." She doesn't give him an opportunity to disobey before reaching out to grab his tie, her hands wrapped around the luxurious material and with a sharp tug he's pulled into her, their bodies colliding and everything feels right.
"Stop." He whispers throat feeling raw, his voice comes out rougher than he intended. His eyes widen at the red flush that it yields, he's not the only one affected it seems.
"You don't want to flick me," she states with certainty, eyes searching his face as she tightens her hold on his tie his neck strains under the slight pressure, leaning down to lessen the tension. Too late he releases how much closer that brings their faces, she's barely an inch away from him now her soft puffs of breath landing directly on his face. "What do you want to do to me instead, Mr. Cassano?" She boldly finishes her statement, dark eyes ping ponging between his lips and his eyes.
Mentally berating himself for his weakness he suddenly grabs her waist, his arm circumvents the entire circumference with room to spare. She gasps in surprise but doesn't look scared, rather she looks curious, biting her bottom lip as she earnestly watches him.
"Do you really want to know?" He bites out, bringing his hand to her jaw and then sliding lower curling it around her neck, fingers tickling the soft nape of head.
She smirks, unflinching in the eye of his storm. She stands on the tips of her toes, bringing them that much closer, "Oh you don't know how much I want to know, Vincenzo." His name is exotic on her tongue, the letters not quite settling correctly but it sounds delectable to his ears, he wants to hear her scream it loudly too.
"I'll show you then." He's done with words, it's clear that they're both cognizant of what's happening between them, the air is so charged it's nearly crackling. She isn't backing down and despite his better judgement he doesn't want to lose, he can't be the way to pull away now. Simultaneously they yank each other closer, him by her neck and her by his tie. He sees the passion in her eyes, finally bursting to the surface and that's all the consent he needs, if she wants him too then she can have him.
Twisting his head he surges forward, eager to capture her lips and devour her moans of pleasure, his hand is now curled possessively around the small swell of her tight posterior, her suit pants always putting it beautifully on display. He had been hungry to touch it, grab it and feel the plumpness in his hands. It's every bit as amazing as he's imagined, her lips fall open as he squeezes at the flesh and he leans forward prepared to eat her alive.
She wraps her free arm around his neck, dragging him down to meet her and he easily lifts her off the ground, grinning boyishly when she squeaks releasing his tie to wrap both arms around his neck, their faces are now level. His hand remains on her ass.
Silently they move towards each other, intent crystal clear.
He can feel the heat from her lip, just as he grazes the smooth skin he hears a loud crash from behind them and they both jump, foreheads knocking accidentally as they react to the sudden sound.
He unceremoniously drops her, but her arms still latched around his shoulder force him forward making his forehead now collide with her chin. She lets out a loud scream of pain, shoving him away and shouting obscenities. He rubs at the pained skin, wincing in discomfort before turning towards the loud interruption with a murderous glare.
Who the fuck was it?
Nam Joo-Sung stands quivering in apparent fear looking like he's seconds away from urinating himself, his knees knocking together viciously.
A deer in the headlights, his eyes are as huge and terrified as one.
"I--um well you see.... I forgot to water the plants....you both look angry. Scary. You don't want an explanation. I'm going. Gone. I'll just. Go." He stutters out nonsensical, suddenly grabbing the plants and he watches as the frightened man awkwardly lifts the pots, cursing when the soil falls out dirting his clothes and the wooden floors, then he falls to his knees scooping it back into the pots, crawling backwards until he's out the door.
They both stare at the door.
Awkward silence remaining even with the man's departure.
And then a vibration fills the air, she jumps as if broken from her stupor reaching into her tiny bag and retrieving her phone. He can barely hear her over the beating of his own heart but he catches the disappointed look she sends his way, they can't continue this.
"Yes. I understand, we'll be right there."
Grabbing his briefcase he takes a moment with his back turned to her to catch his breath, collect himself. He's Vincenzo Cassano, not some prepubescent teenager. He can control himself, control is his middle name.
Then he turns back around and loses all his hard worked composure.
She's right in his space, rubbing absently at her neck as she looks at him.
"We'll finish this later. Don't think I'm going to let you off easy, I always finish what I start." She promises, pointedly looking his lips before grinning then boldly she lightly smacks him twice on his cheeks, "Pick your jaw off the ground, we have to go."
Her long hair bounces over her shoulder as she skips away, his eyes locked on the hypnotic sway of her hips. Her hands are cutely by her side, her signature walk that he had found ridiculous before. He doesn't view it the same way now.
Next time, there will be no interruptions he will make sure of it. Even if he has to kill someone.

After the Fact: Act III
Rating: T just ‘cause it is.
Act I
Act II
-3 years after Act II-
Courtney arose to the sound of her persistent alarm. The morning sun poured all of it's essence into the city that morning. She stretched her legs under the covers, her thighs still sore from the night before. The alarm sound gave Duncan enough consciousness to drape an arm around her followed by his groggy words, leaving her trapped.
"Good morning, Princess." He pulled her in closer and she felt her heart jump out of it's own slumber, causing her to smile instinctively.
"Duncan... I need to start getting ready for class." She pulled on his arm enough to wake him, freeing her from his hold.
She slowly trudged into the bathroom to brush her teeth, and soon she heard his own alarm go off for work. He appeared in the bathroom mirror and plopped the toothpaste filled brush in his mouth.
Their conversations, while mostly unintelligible, were an occurrence whenever Courtney stood over at this place instead of her dorm room. They spoke over the toothbrushes in their mouth.
          "Hungry?"
          "Mmhm"
          "Eggs?"
          "Sounds good to me."
Their brushes were put back in the holders one after the other. Courtney made her way back into his bedroom, looking through his drawers, and Duncan sat on the foot of the bed.
"Okay. Perfect. Now if I could just find a shirt so I don't have to walk around here naked."
Duncan truly couldn't help what came out of his mouth after seeing his girlfriend in front of him in this state. "I wouldn't mind that at all."
She turned back to see him gazing at her in amazement, and her cheeks began to glow in scarlet red. "It never turns off for you, does it?" She turned back before Duncan responded.
"As long as you're around, no."
Courtney scoffed at his comment. She found a shirt of his, and underneath it was a plain, black book with Duncan's name on it. She took it out along with the shirt and draped the shirt it over her body. She held it up when she questioned him. "What's this?" Duncan studied it before answering. "Oh... it's my sketchbook."
"Your sketchbook? I haven't seen you draw in such a long time. Can I see?"
"Yeah, go ahead. I, uh, just started seeing designs around town, on busses. I just got inspired to make some of my own."
She flipped through a collection of completed sketches all equipped with detail and color. She had seen his notebook doodles, but they didn't compare to the amount of effort and skill these drawings took. She looked at him in awe for hiding such a gift. "Duncan, these are amazing. You have true talent."
Duncan said nothing as Courtney flipped through each page.
"Have you thought of becoming a tattoo artist? You love the shop right down the street, the artists even know you by name."
"I always have, but I'm better off sticking to the repair shop." "Why not stick to something that I know can pay me?"
She looked up at him, her hands firmly placed on her hips. "Duncan-"
He took the book out of her hands and placed it on top of the drawer. "I'm gonna go start on breakfast."
Courtney watched him walk out of the bedroom until one footstep grew fainter than the last. She couldn't help herself as she inched closer to the sketchbook. After eyeing her messenger bag at the foot of Duncan's bed, Courtney swiftly grabbed the sketchbook and wedged it in between her laptop and textbook before heading to the kitchen.
"So, what are you in the mood for?" Duncan asked from the refrigerator door. "Omelet, scrambled?"
"I think we can do omelets today. But, I have to go to the library as soon we're done. I barely had time to study last night thanks to you."
Duncan closed the door and faced Courtney, ready to fire back. "Oh, I'm sorry. I could've sworn it was you begging for round two?"
          "Shut up!"
"I will once you admit it!"
Courtney grabbed the carton from him and started cracking eggs into a bowl. "No, you won't."
"Very true." He smiled as he got started on greasing the pan. "What are you doing after class?"
Courtney shuffled through a list of things she could tell him that were far from the truth. "I...have a...Debate Guild meeting after my classes."
"Okay. As long as you come back here tonight."
Courtney questioned Duncan as she got closer to him. "For what?"
"I thought we could just have a night in?"
"Just like last night?" Courtney asked, smirk on full display.
"I've got a few ideas." He snaked an arm around her waist, and the gap between them diminished when he pulled her into a slow, drawn out kiss.
Afterwards, she opened her eyes and Courtney swore she saw the sun shine brighter through the windows of his apartment.
                                                         ***
Courtney took a deep breath and eyed the sketchbook in her bag. She took a minute to button up her blazer and before walking into the tattoo parlor.
You've got three years of pre-law under your belt, Courtney.
She opened the door to see this open space of creatives in a room adorned with huge windows. She was thrust into an array of stations dedicated to each artist, some were occupied by clients and some empty. Her heels stood out as each step made its rounds on the wooden floors.
She walked up to the front desk and approached a rather young guy. He didn't look old enough to work at the shop.
"Good Afternoon. My name is Courtney Álvarez, and I'd like to speak with the owner of this establishment."
Without saying a word, he got up and entered a room behind him. She turned away from the desk to take in the view from the outside, before hearing a voice from behind the desk.
"Hey? We in trouble or something?" Courtney's attention diverted when her eyes met a petite woman covered in tattoos.
"No, nothing like that." Courtney handed her a business card with her name and number on it. "I assume you're Anya Tremblay."
"I've heard this name somewhere..." She looked up from the card and at Courtney. "Oh, you're Duncan's girl. He talks about you a lot. You are exactly like he described."
Courtney decided to take that as a compliment before continuing her introduction.
"Right now I'm not his girlfriend. I'm his... advocate." Courtney smiled before reaching a hand out to shake Anya's.
Anya shook her hand with skepticism. "Advocate?"
"Yes. I'm very passionate about cultivating his interests to render them beneficial to his life." She reached for the sketchbook in her bag with a few color coded sticky notes attached to certain pages.
"Now, you may know Duncan as a regular to your shop. However, he's also your potential new artist." She held the book out on her arms facing Anya, opening to the first page she highlighted.
"See here.” There pictured was a fully rendered sketch of a compass drawn in the usual Traditional fashion. “Duncan’s well versed in Traditional. I've witnessed him drawing in class since we were in junior high.”
Anya looked pleasantly surprised as Courtney flipped through various pages. Some of the same style Courtney highlighted at the beginning of her presentation of Duncan’s work. Other drawings included skulls drawn in the style of realism. Courtney closed the book to begin her closing arguments.
“To conclude, Duncan has immense potential. He’s passionate, young, and strong-willed. You’d be missing out on this city’s next best artist if you turn him away.” Courtney hoped Anya had questions, which was always a good sign.
Anya’s stoic stance remained, but her voice seemed communicative. “Has he worked on skin before?”
“No. That’s actually where you come in. Duncan’s a pretty fast learner. And, with your extensive knowledge and history in American Traditional he’ll do just fine.” Anya looked inquisitive after hearing Courtney's counterargument.
“How do you know I do Traditional?”
“Your Instagram profile is public, you’ve done some of Duncan’s sleeve, and I’m pre-law." She placed a hand on her chest, gesturing to herself proudly. "I do my research.”
Anya's voice returned to a tone with incredulity. “How did you guys even manage to find each other?”
“We’re more than just what’s on the surface. Any more questions?”
"One more," Anya answered. "Why didn't Duncan apply for the apprenticeship himself‽"
"Duncan's apprehensive at the thought of taking a chance on his dream job, but that doesn't mean he isn't capable-"
“Alright, alright. Tell him to give us a call. Tomorrow. 10AM.” Anya made her way back into her office.
Courtney triumphantly strutted her way out of the shop when her phone buzzed in her pocket. Duncan's name flashed on the screen. She answered, sounding more enthusiastic than she meant to. "Duncan! Hey!"
Duncan caught on to her tone. "Hey, babe. You sound like you had a pretty good meeting."
She quickly remembered what she told him that morning, and followed along. "Oh, yeah! I... won the practice rounds! So, anyway, what's up?"
"Think you could pick up the takeout I ordered from around the corner on your way back?"
She looked to her right to see the restaurant right down the street. "I can do that. See you soon."
His tone indicated he was smiling. "Okay. I love you."
         "I love you, too."
                                                            ***
Courtney called for her boyfriend as she closed the apartment door behind her. She was still undoubtedly giddy, and she couldn't wait to deliver the news about his interview. "I'm heeeere! They gave us an extra egg roll because-" She stopped in her tracks to see Duncan quietly standing in front of what used to be an empty corner of his apartment; now adorned with an ambient glow of warm fairy lights. She slowly placed the takeout on the table, gradually making her way toward him. "What is all this?"
"This is for you." Duncan stepped out of the way and Courtney noticed a white desk decked with two bookshelves of the same height. Some of the books she'd leave at his place were on the shelves. Her voice grew soft as she struggled to find words. "Duncan..."
"I thought you'd want a good place to study here for when... you move in with me?"
She pulled him into a hug, burying her face in his chest with Duncan placing a hand through her hair.
"Duncan, I'd love to live with you, but I don't have job, I can't pay rent-"
"It's not about rent, Princess. I can afford this place on my own. All you need to do is study your ass off." He lifted her head up by holding her face, possibly in the gentlest way he'd ever done. His fingers ran through her hair once more. "Move in with me?"
Courtney took Duncan's arms to interlock her fingers with his, their hands turned down to the floor. She tilted her head up toward him and leaned in, their eyes closing slowly before Courtney lightly pressed her lips onto his, and slowly elongating with every draw of her lips. Duncan returned with warm and vehement intent while his hands broke free of their joining. His arms instinctively pulled her in by her waist; close enough to have their bodies one against the other. Courtney lost her breath at the pull, and her hands found their way around his neck. She felt a warm aura gleam to her core before slowing the pace enough to stop. She repeated herself one more, but with assurance in her words.
"I'd love to with you, Duncan."
Duncan felt lighter at her change of heart given his reassurance. He couldn't wait for days with her to be his new normal. He reveled in the idea of coming home to her sitting at this very desk, buried in her work. Or welcoming him into open arms on the couch. And dinners with her after such a long day. He quickly remembered the takeout on the table. He figured now's the time to start these memories. "Wanna eat some takeout?" Courtney nodded, just realizing how hungry she was. His hands dropped from her waist and she made her way back to their little round dining table just for the two of them, and he realized how formal she was dressed.
"Do you always dress this fancy for meetings?" Courtney froze before she remembered how excited she was to tell him about his chance at his dream job. "Actually, no. I wasn't at a Debate Guild meeting today." Duncan walked closer to the table, still confused. She retrieved her bag to show him she had his sketchbook. She couldn't hide the elation in her voice even if she tried. "I went to Anya's shop, showed her your work, and she wants you to be her apprentice."
Duncan truly couldn't believe her words. "What?"
Courtney began to repeat. "I went to-"
"No, no I heard you. I just- How?" When realization hit him, it grew harder to hide his grin.
"I didn't do anything! It was your work that got you in. It wasn't hard to make a great case with strong evidence."
"Courtney, you didn't have to do all that for me-"
"Well, too bad you feel that way," Courtney countered as she wrapped her arms around his torso. "Because you have a girlfriend who loves and sees the best in you, and a phone call scheduled for 10AM tomorrow."
Duncan looked down into her eyes with incredulity, and his arms made their way to her waist as well. He couldn't take moments like these and his girlfriend for granted. "You're unbelievable."
She smiled, still proud of the both of them. "I like to keep you surprised in more ways than one."
"How can I ever repay you, Princess?"
She teased him, recalling his words this morning. "I've got a few ideas." She giggled lightly.
They parted, sitting in their respective seats at their table, in their commitment to making more memories together.
A/N: HI!!!! I hope you liked it if you made it this far! Let me know what you think. See you in act iv!

Brickclub I.5.13, “Resolving Some Questions of Municipal Policing”
“Curiosity is a form of gluttony," Hugo says, of the onlookers trying to peer through the station house door. "To see is to devour."
This is the most direct statement of a theme Hugo comes back to over and over--the destructive power of gossip and idle curiosity. It's a theme that pulls a lot of weight, but starting on this reread so soon after my last one, one thing I'm wondering is how much that theme is supposed to be setting us up to excuse Marius's lack of inquiry into the version of his history Valjean shares.
Observations on Fantine:
--Fantine, a panther during the fight, now cowers "like a frightened dog" in the station. I think the panther line might be the only feline metaphor Fantine gets.
--"She would have softened a heart of granite, but you cannot soften a heart of wood." Fantine has been turning herself to stone for the last few chapters, but there are worse things to be.
--And one of those is to become even stonier. In her last monologue, right before she attempts to leave: "Oh! I won't do it again, Monsieur Javert! Whatever anyone does to me now, I won't react in any way."
--Fantine's two long monologues keep coming back to two points: The injustice of prison wages, both to the prisoners and their competitors, and her ability to be respectable when given the means to support herself. She used to have so many changes of underwear, and now she just has one silk dress for the evenings. She still owes 100 francs to the Thenardiers, but she's up to date on her rent now, just ask her landlord. And at the end, Madeleine agrees with this: "I will give you all the money you need. You shall again become honest in again becoming happy."
We've seen, and will continue to see, how the lack of means bars access to 'honesty'/respectability, but the reverse of that statement is surprisingly hopeful: only provide the means to live honestly, and a person will be honest.
--Madeleine and Javert's battle for Fantine's liberty is framed almost exactly like the battle for Valjean's soul between his convict self and the bishop in "Petit-Gervais," and Fantine's heart softening back to trust is a much more direct parallel of Valjean's change of heart than I had realized. Valjean never manages to reach Javert this way, but he does pull Fantine back to humanity for her final weeks.
There is one major difference, though, and it’s not actually in the level of their transgressions. Fantine has spit in the face of the mayor in the place of his power; Valjean has stolen a sentimental treasure from his host, in the home where he was given shelter. Both insults are a thing that can be absorbed or shrugged off, practically, but with immense symbolic weight behind them.
But Valjean’s reverie ends with him obliterating the convict within him and letting the bishop take full possession of his soul. Fantine keeps hers. She doesn’t have to go through any of Valjean’s extreme self-abnegation to get her humanity back.
And speaking of extreme self-abnegation, there’s Javert. This got long.
Javert, despite being wood and not stone, is the one who gets the statue imagery in this scene. From the moment right before he stops Fantine from leaving, after Madeleine instructs that she be freed: "Up to that moment Javert had stood stock still, staring at the ground, out of place in the midst of this scene like some statue left in the way, waiting to be put somewhere." I am reminded of the cart in Montfermeil--the broken cart that is a metaphor for outmoded institutions, left in the way to finish decaying. Javert, the automaton of the law, is left in the way, waiting for a purpose.
Twice in this scene, we see him imagine himself an empty vessel for the law. It’s the only kind of grandiosity he ever has--humbleness to the point of self-obliteration, so he can embody The Law.
The first is while he is first handing down Fantine’s sentence, and I’m going to quote at length:
"It was one of those moments in which he exercised without restraint, but with all the scruples of a strict conscience, his formidable discretionary power. At this moment he felt that his policeman's stool was a bench of justice. He was conducting a trial. He was trying and condemning. He called all the ideas of which his mind was capable around the grand thing that he was doing. The more he examined the conduct of this girl, the more he revolted at it. It was clear that he had seen a crime committed. He had seen, there in the street, society, represented by a property holder and an elector, insulted and attacked by a creature who was an outlaw and an outcast. A prostitute had assaulted a citizen. He, Javert, had seen that himself. He wrote in silence." (Wilbour)
And the second is after Madeleine intervenes to demand Fantine’s liberty a second time:
"It was obvious that Javert must have been 'thrown out of kilter,' as they say, to allow himself to address the sergeant the way he did after the mayor's request that Fantine should be set free. Could he have forgotten monsieur le maire's presence? Had he in the end convinced himself it was impossible that any authority could have given such an order, and that surely monsieur le maire must have said one thing instead of another without meaning to? Or in view of the outrages he had witnessed over the past two hours, did he tell himself it was necessary to act with the utmost resolve, that the humble must assume greatness, the sleuth must turn himself into a judge, the police agent must become an agent of justice, and that in this exceptional extremity he, Javert, was the personification of law, order, morality, government, the whole of society?" (Donougher)
Hoooo boy. There is just so much to unpack here, and I’m glad we have another year and change of brickclub to keep unpacking it.
Just on the surface: Law, order, morality, government, and society are all the same thing to Javert. The purpose of law is to uphold the social order. It is a contradiction in terms that authority should seek to undermine itself:
"Javert felt he was about to go mad. At that moment he underwent in rapid succession and almost all at once the most violent emotions he had ever experienced in his life. To see a common prostitute spit in the face of a mayor--this was something so monstrous that in his most dreadful imaginings he would have regarded it as sacrilege to believe it were possible. On the other hand, obscurely, at the back of his mind, he made a hideous comparison between what this woman was and what this mayor might be, and then he had an inkling of something very simple about this extraordinary attack that appalled him. But when he saw this mayor, this magistrate, calmly wipe his face and say, 'Set this woman free,' he was stunned, thoughts and words failed him equally. His capacity for astonishment was exceeded. He remained speechless." (Donougher)
Refusing to punish this transgression against established hierarchies undercuts Madeleine’s legitimacy in his head so much that he takes it upon himself to contradict the mayor, to argue with him, to put forward his abstract embodied Authority as more valid than the mayor’s actual authority. Madeleine only wins by literally citing the legal code, in a scene that reads almost like a battle between wizards.
Going back to Fantine’s attempted departure--"The sound of the latch roused him. He raised his head with an expression of supreme authority, an expression that is always the more frightening the lower the level at which power is invested, ferocious in the wild beast, atrocious in the man of no account." Wilbour says "in the undeveloped man"; I prefer Donougher here, because it gets the ambiguity in "the lower the level at which power is invested"--both that power is frightening in the hands of beings who cannot, personally, wield it well,  but also that small concentrations of unaccountable power create petty tyrannies.
Javert knows he is a small man who, on his own merits, neither possesses nor deserves power over others. But he is a small man channeling the whole of social authority, and that makes him terrifying.
If what he were channeling was actually Justice, it would also make him--well, it would make him Enjolras. But it’s not. I talked a couple of chapters ago about the themes I’m starting to think of as Hugo’s major arcana, and one of the big ones is Fatalite. He brings it up in the very first sentence of the prologue:
“So long as there shall exists, by reason of law and custom, a social condemnation which, in the face of civilization, artificially creates hells on earth, and complicates with human fatalite a destiny that is divine...”
The divine destiny--the intention of Providence--seems to be whatever humanity is capable of achieving. Fatalite is whatever human-made factors interfere with that achievement: Social condemnation. Custom. And Law. It’s all fatalite.
The more Javert imagines himself an empty vessel for the law, the more self-abnegating he is in his duty, the worse he is, because what he is channeling is the force that creates hells on earth.
He has lost this purity in Paris, and to some extent that accompanies real tolerance of corruption--this Javert would have resigned rather than serve with men he knows are taking bribes and enabling double agents like Le Cabuc. But this Javert would also never have casually granted Bigrenaille's request for tobacco in solitary. And I’m not sure this Javert would have noticed the grievances in his suicide memo--certainly, he doesn’t respond at all to Fantine’s repeated refrain about the prison wages.
I really like @everyonewasabird's idea that Javert, in frightening Fantine to death--in taking an innocent life, one he has no claim over--Javert will break a geas. He loses the ability to be this empty vessel, and is muddling through on his own instincts and prejudices after that--and his own instincts and prejudices are terrible, make no mistake. But they’re malleable, in a way that the whole force of abstract social condemnation isn’t.
And also, god, now I’m thinking about Valjean standing there listening to Fantine talk about the unfairness of prison wages. What must be going through his head.

A Christmas To Remember (Ch.1)
I was SO happy to get the chance to gift one of my favorites, @vndooms with a fic for @descendantsgiftexchange! Your Jaylos fluff warms my heart, I have much love and respect for your fics. And your Descendants character artwork is undeniably adorable. Your Jaylos art lives rent free in my mind always 💖
Anyhow, I was inspired into a multi-chapter fic of all the Jaylos fluff, which I think you’ll notice was somewhat inspired by your stories. And I truly hope you enjoy it!
Chapter 1 - Truly Christmas
Jay curses himself for not dressing warm enough when his body starts to shiver uncontrollably. A thicker coat would have definitely been a better idea. The light one he threw on absentmindedly is doing absolutely nothing to combat the icy breeze, which is getting colder by the minute as the sun fades over the horizon.
He sighs as he cups his hands and blows. There’s no way he’s letting the cold stop him from enjoying the breathtaking holiday views. Fingers be damned, this is the most Christmassy thing he’s seen since he got back to Auradon.
From his vantage point on the front yard, he can see the fresh blanket of snow completely covering every surface, casting delicate blooms of crystal white that sparkle in the twilight. It’s like something out of a painting, it’s almost too perfect.
Evie and Doug are standing just outside the front door of the castle, talking to the decorators perched on the rooftop, all busy at work draping gleaming white Christmas lights all over the castle overhangs. Multiple strands are dripping over the sides, glittering like the most beautiful icicles, reflecting all sorts of colors over the snowy ground beneath them.
He’s in complete awe, eyes wide and glossy as they try to absorb every gorgeous wintry detail. He’s not even aware Evie’s approaching until her quiet huffs distract him.
His gorgeous friend is stumbling slowly through the soft mounds of snow, and he chuckles as his arms shoot out to steady her when she gets closer. Only Evie would be able to wear faux fur-tipped hiking boots with heels and not even look silly trying to use them as if they’re proper winter gear.
“Jay!” She pants quietly, gripping gratefully to his forearms as she catches her breath. “I’m so glad you came outside! Doug has been at this all day, I swear,” she shakes her head, still smiling slightly. “But I think it came out great, don’t you?”
She looks over her shoulder at the castle, beaming happily when Jay starts nodding.
“For sure, Eves. It looks great. Really gets you in the Christmas spirit.”
He smiles as Evie leans in to hug him tightly. “Thanks Jay. I’m so glad you came! This is going to be so fun.”
Jay nods. “Thank you, Eves. I can’t think of a better way to spend my holiday break, honestly. It’s going to be so great having us all together for Christmas.”
Evie smiles and gives Jay another squeeze. “So, do you know if they’re close? I figured that’s why you came outside, right?” She cranes her neck to peer down the darkened driveway, looking out for any signs of movement.
“Yeah, Lon should almost be here. But I guess her new… ‘friend?’ is coming on her own.” He perks a brow, following Evie’s gaze down the empty path.
Jay was shocked, to say the least, when Lonnie had confessed to him that she had recently started up a relationship, especially after revealing that it was long-distance. But the new girl lived in Auradon, so Lonnie jumped at the invite to stay with Evie and Doug, especially since they were more than welcoming to her bringing a date with her for the week.
“So, she still hasn’t told you her name even? That’s odd…” Evie comments when Jay shakes his head. “I wonder why?”
“Dunno,” he shrugs, checking his phone again. “Maybe it’s a surprise. Or I know her.”
Jay chuckles at that last thought. He already knew there was a good chance he might know the girl if she’s been a local Auradonian for a while. But Lonnie had joked with him all through high school about the slim pickings for her in Auradon, so it just didn’t seem likely.
He could be wrong, though. It’s not like things haven’t changed a lot for him since then, too. Anything is possible.
Jay’s phone lights up then, and he checks it quickly, trying to hide his reaction from Evie as he reads the message he’s been anxiously waiting for. But Evie already can tell who it is just from the look on his face. Only one person makes Jay smile that brightly.
“And...Carlos will be here soon?”
The sudden red blush warming Jay’s cheeks is answer enough for Evie, and she grins triumphantly. Jay ducks his head to avoid her knowing look, opting to turn and face the driveway to wait for the cars to arrive. An icy tingle in his fingers reminds him of just how cold he is, even if the heat in his face is helping with that...just a little bit.
The familiar crackling of ice on tires alerts Evie and Jay to a bright blue sedan coming through the dark shadow of the trees that line the road. Jay immediately recognizes Lonnie’s car and walks around to the driver’s side when it pulls up, with Evie leaning in to wave excitedly at Lonnie through the car window.
“Jayyy!”
In an instant the dark-haired girl is launching out of the car towards him, wrapping her arms around him in a suffocating hug, pushing air out of his laughter until he’s barely wheezing. Jay hugs back, but he doesn’t even attempt the same strength that Lonnie puts into it. Just in case he can’t...and then she won’t let him live it down all week.
“Lons.”
He holds her tight, letting his chin rest on her shoulder. The familiar tickle of her hair on his cheek makes him smile. “You have NO idea how much I’ve missed you.”
“Oh, it better be tons.” She quips. She stands back and shoves him lightly in the chest, furrowing her brow to feign anger at him. But there’s no hiding the curl of her lips as they start their usual banter. It’s almost like it hasn’t been months since they’ve seen each other.
Jay chuckles and pushes back at her, going for her shoulder instead. “Yeah, yeah…I did. It’s so good to see you, Lon.”
She gives him a final smirk and a wink before she turns away, facing Evie with a wide smile.
Evie immediately grabs Lonnie by the shoulders and pulls her in close, squealing happily. “Lonnie, so glad you could make it! Welcome!”
Lonnie’s face scrunches when Evie squeezes her in tight, but she manages to wiggle a little space between them. “Thanks for having me! And, my...date?”
She looks back to Jay, who’s raising a surprised eyebrow.
“What, you’re not sure now?” He teases. “You’re spending the week here just so you can hang with this chick! Don’t-“
He puts his hand up to silence Lonnie, and she snaps her mouth shut.
“-Don’t...bullshit your best friend, ok? We’ve never spent Christmas together as long as we’ve known each other.”
Surprisingly, Lonnie doesn’t try to argue. Instead, she just smiles softly, ducking her head a little to avoid Jay’s glare.
“Fuck, I better like this girl, Lons, if she’s already so damn special to you!”
“Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure you will.”
Lonnie’s slight smile at her comment is a little unnerving, and Jay finds himself studying her face, as if he could figure out what she’s thinking. But when another car pulls into the driveway, he loses all focus. Of everything.
He’s here.
He doesn’t even remember getting to the driver side door, but he already has it open, and is smiling down into the deep brown eyes he’s been waiting to see. He reaches out to take Carlos’ hand, helping him out of the car to stand in front of him.
“Hey ‘Los. Long time no see.”
He smiles, and Carlos smiles back. It’s Jay’s favorite smile, bright and wide and golden, and meant just for him. His heart is wild and thrumming to life at the sight of it. He stands there for a moment, trying to etch the smile into his memory, and Carlos lets him, just holding his hand and feeling the warmth in their palms pressed together.
“Um. Hi. Jay?”
A petite voice shocks Jay back to life. One that is very familiar, but very unexpected. He dares a peek over Carlos’ shoulder to the girl that’s standing there, with shocking blue eyes and curly brown hair.
“Jane??”
Her cheeks are pinking when she smiles at him, and he watches as Lonnie steps over to her, putting a tentative arm on her shoulder. But Jane doesn’t shy away. With a breathless giggle, she slowly leans herself into Lonnie’s touch.
“Lons…” Jay tries, processing slowly. He looks between both girls as he thinks. “Jane is...your date?”
His best friend looks nervous to respond, scratching her head and looking away from Jay. But Jane tilts her head up to Lonnie, giving her a toothy grin, and Lonnie catches it and smiles, too.
“Yeah,” she says, with Jane nodding her agreement.
“Ohhhh!” Evie coos, clapping again. “This is amazing! I can’t wait to hear all about how you two got together!”
Balancing on her heels again, Evie takes a wobbly step forward, waving everyone inside as she flails a bit across the snow.
“Come on, let’s get inside and get you settled. We’ll have a lot to talk about in the morning once we all get a little sleep in us.”
Jay grins and squeezes Carlos’ hand, using his grip to pull him in closer. Carlos snickers as he brushes against Jay’s side. They swing their hands together playfully, following carefully behind Evie, Lonnie and Jane.
“I missed you,” Carlos barely whispers, and Jay smiles at him, releasing their hands so he can grab him by the hips.
“Missed you too,” he whispers back, sneaking a kiss to Carlos’ temple. “But tell me, did you know about Jane and Lonnie? I mean, you had to if you drove her here, right?”
Carlos shushes him but offers a tiny nod. “Not everything, but Jane did need someone to talk to about it. This is totally new to her, you know?”
Jay smiles in agreement and squeezes Carlos’ hip. “I’m sure she thought you’d be able to relate  best.” Carlos hums quietly but doesn’t look up. “Ok, I’ll let it slide that you didn’t tell me. Just this once. But you better tell me any of the juicy details she told you.” Carlos chuckles as they walk inside, stopping the conversation once they close in on Jane and Lonnie.
Evie immediately ushers everyone up to their rooms for the night, insisting that rest is needed before their break truly starts. But Jay’s not complaining. He’s been waiting for this for much too long, and time alone with Carlos will be the perfect start to what he has planned for this week.
Once in their room, they make quick work of getting ready for bed, stripping off all the cold winter gear and frosted clothing in favor of their dry t-shirts and boxers. The bed is warm when they crawl in, but Jay still takes the opportunity to hug Carlos to him, making him laugh as he stumbles into Jay’s too-fast embrace.
They snuggle into each other, tangling their legs together and settling their heads onto the pillows. When they’re laying sideways and their faces are close, Jay starts to stroke his fingers lightly through Carlos’ hair, letting the soft curls thread around his fingers. Carlos tips his chin up, eyes bright and intently focused on Jay. Jay leans in, and presses a kiss to Carlos’ soft lips.
“Best way to start Christmas break,” Jay mumbles against Carlos’s lips. He snorts out a laugh when their teeth clack harshly from Carlos’ wide smile.
They stay like that for a while, sliding their lips gently against each other’s, kissing lovingly but lightly. When he starts to feel the heaviness of sleep taking over his body, Jay gives a final sweet peck to Carlos’ lips and grins lazily.
“We’d better sleep ‘Los. We’ve got a lot going on this week.”
Carlos raises an eyebrow curiously. “Oh really? Sounds interesting.”
Jay chuckles as he hugs Carlos in to lay on his chest, letting his fingers dance across his arm soothingly.
“I hope so.”

This was the last's Friday night before his studies would begin and he was beyond excited to start his new academic journey in the medical field. The only thing that overshadowed his excitement was the fact that the place that he found for the living, was already occupied, which meant that he would have a roommate, something that he never wanted to have. The main reason why no matter how hard his best friend tried to convince him to rent a house together, he did not succumb to his persuasion. Preferring solitude instead to the company. And as a result got himself in a situation in which he was now, with the person he even never met.
He huffed, driving toward the lonely standing house, someone’s car already parked there. He looked around, leaving his car on a free space. Getting out of his SUV, Beckett went toward the house. When he got inside, he noticed still packed boxes in the hall, but he didn’t hear or see anyone else. He walked further into the house, entering a living room he will be forced to share with someone else. He looked around the neat and cozy room, two armchairs were standing opposite fireplace, the massive bookcase was located along one of the walls. He was about to go and check the kitchen when he heard his phone calling. Taking it out, he checked the Caller’s ID before answering the call, listening for a cheerful voice, coming from his mobile.
“Morning to you too, Zephyr,” replied Beckett, putting his keys into the bowl.
“Hey, Beckster, did you finally got to your place? Did you settle already? Who is your new roommate?” questioned Zeph excitedly, not letting Beckett say anything until ending his questioning.
“You know I hate it when you call me that. And yes, I already got to my new place but had no chance to settle, yet. Answering your last question, I have no idea who my new roommate is as I can see only unopened boxes there. But I do hope that the person I share this place with is someone decent and will not interrupt my study. Although based on the fact that instead of unpacking, this roommate just left… I guess I can just forget all my hopes.”
“Yes, yes… About your study, boy you need to unwind for the last time before your study starts…,” started Zeph before being interrupted by Beckett.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that I was invited to the party, and you are coming with me. So this is Party tiiiiiiiime….” excitedly screamed Zeph making Beckett frown moving his phone a bit further from his ear.
“Never," cut Beckett. "you know I hate parties.”
“Yes, but you also know I will not give up until you say yes. So let’s make it easy for both of us.” laughed Zeph.
“I need to unpack my stuff, and it may take the whole day. Also, I need to go to the library to pick up some books for my studies as tomorrow the library will be closed. So this time you will need somehow to manage this on your own.”
“If these are the only reasons then…. partyyyyy."
"I told you, I will not have...," tried to say, Beckett.
"I will be there in twenty minutes and will help you unpack, and then we will pick up your books before crashing this party.”
“You will not give up… right?”
“My boy, you should know by now that never.”
“Good…” sigh Beckett exasperated looking at his watch. “be here in twenty minutes, but I will leave a party before 10 pm. Understood?”
“See you in twenty minutes,” replied Zeph, ending the call.
Almost an hour later Beckett finally heard a knock on the door. Grudgingly he opened it letting his best friend inside the house.
“You are late,” stated Beckett holding one of the boxes in his hands.
“Sorry, I met my new neighbors and they needed help with some boxes,” shrugged Zeph nonchalantly passing by Beckett feeling not even the slightest remorse in his delay.
Another hour later and unloading a bunch of boxes that Beckett brought with him, they finally started to unpack them. And in another three hours, they were finally done. All the stuff that Beckett took with him were put neatly to their places. The bookshelf in the living room stocked with new books he brought, and a picture of him and his sister put above fireplace. They both looked in satisfaction around the room putting the last boxes into the storage place. Zeph patted Beckett on the back before going toward the door.
“So now, when we finally finished with unpacking,” started Zeph, his eyes widening, when he noticed how his friend displeasingly looked on his new roommate’s still packed boxes. Quickly he marched back to Beckett grabbing his hand and pulling him toward the door, letting him only grab his keys on the way out. “Even don’t you dare think about this. You are NOT touching your roomies' stuff. Now…. let’s go to this place, where you need to be quiet and bore yourself to death or we will be late to the partyyyyyyyy.”
“Can you stop calling it that. And the library can be fun when you know what you are looking for,” notes Beckett before they both exit the house, shutting the door behind.
This was already three o’clock when they rushed toward the library, trying to get on time before it will be closed. When Beckett was about to round the corner, he felt someone bumping straight into him. The heavy books the person was carrying fell to the ground hitting painfully Beckett’s foot. Making him swear under his breath, looking at the person in front of him.
“Haven’t you ever been taught that you need to look where you are going?” snorted annoyed Beckett, crouching in front of the girl and helping her to collect scattered books. “Next time, watch where you are going,” said he with a scowl on his face, shoving the books into her arms before strolling into the library with Zeph following him, leaving startled stranger behind.
“What a jerk,” mumbled girl, standing up with the help of her friends.
“But he is a nice looking jerk,” whistled athletic-looking guy, watching after Beckett. “Isn’t he, Shreya?”
“Ohhhh, yes, Griff. He is yummy, and that ass,” moaned Shreya turning to face her friend. “And did you see his lips? Maeve, if I would bump into him... he wouldn't leave... so easily.”
“You two are just ridiculous, and I hate you,” groaned Maeve, covering her face. “Can you think of anything, but sex?”
Shreya and Griffin shared an incredulous look, before shaking their heads answering in unison.
“Nope… never… And you love us, girl.”
“Don’t you have a boyfriend?” frowned Maeve, looking straight at Griffin.
“Yes, I do. And this is why I don’t try to get the boy myself. Also, because he is straight,” shrugged off Griffin.
“And how exactly do you know that?” questioned Maeve rolling her eyes.
“Did you seen the way he looked at you?” asked Griffin, sharing another look with Shreya, the plan already building in their heads.
“Okay, you two... drop it. I know this look, and you will not try to set me up with him. He looked at me the same way as any other reach boy in town. He is a jerk and a snob. And I'm not interested also you know I have a lot on my place right now. So stop even thinking about this. Be thankful I even agreed to go to this party with you. And Griffin, don’t forget that you promised to do our dance. We need to practice.”
“Don’t worry. I remember. I always up to show my new moves,” he said, wiggling his brows.
“Okay, then let’s go. You know I need to change first and unpack my boxes before my roommate will arrive, what you also promised to do with me.” reminded Maeve, and they went to her house, laughing on their way there.
By the time clock strike seven, Beckett went into a club hosting a party, scowling at the number of people there.
“Zeph, tell me once again, why exactly I agreed to go with you?” said Beckett in a loud voice, while trying to get through the crowd and not to lose his overexcited friend from the view.
When they finally got inside, he looked around the floor, his attention immediately attracted to a dancing couple in the middle of the dance floor. Both moving as a whole to the sounds of Latin Music. The sensual dance attracting the drunken crowd closer to them, creating a commotion on the dance floor from enthusiastic screams and whistles. His brows furrowed instantly when he recognizes the same pretty blond girl he met earlier today. And he felt how his gaze riveted to her, watching her every move, unable to tear his gaze away. He watched how the guy led her into a low dip. His hand shifted to the small of her back when another traveled along her neck caressing her body as if they were in the confidentiality of the bedroom. He slowly reached for her knee making her stretch out her leg. A beautiful red dress flowing around her body, dancing around her petit frame like a flame. At some point during the dance, she looked straight into his eyes, and he felt as if falling under her spell. Her soft hazel eyes were burning with fire alighting something unexplored inside of him. He could feel how his heart sped up beating as never before, and his breath got elevated, from the beats of sultry music and the way her body moved in another man’s arms. Waves of golden hair refracted the lights of the club, and she moved, holding his gaze as though burning him alive from the inside. As if under the spell, Beckett started to move closer to the dancers not even realizing it until a buzzing of his mobile phone broke him out of his daze. It seemed that eternity had passed when in reality it was only a splitting second, second that he will be not able to get out of his mind. He could feel the pounding of his heart inside his chest and he blinked noticing a familiar caller ID. Without another delay, he went outside of the club to take a call, not even sparing another glance to the dance floor.
“Good evening, mother,” said he taking a call. “Sorry, I…,” started he, interrupted by his mother’s voice “No mother, I didn’t… I’m with Zeph… Yes, he is still my friend,” replied Beckett listening to his mother. “Mother, no I still plan to study Medicine and not a business,” said he, annoyed by yet another remark from his mother. “MOTHER,” shouted he losing control for a split second, before taking a deep calming breath. “This is my life, and I have all the right to decide what I want. Look what you have done to Katrina? Isn't it enough...,” exasperatedly said he, only to be shut up by his mother once again. “Yes, mother,” mumbled he, feeling how his blood started to boil, wanting nothing more than to get drunk, to forget about his family at least once. “No, I will not change my mind,” said he, ending the phone call abruptly. He shoved the phone back in the pocket of his dark blue jeans moving back into the club, walking toward the bar. The music has changed to some sultry beats, and when he looked on the dance floor his eyes landed on the same tantalizing stranger who was in the middle of the argument. He could see how some man grabbed her hand, but she jerked it from him and stormed toward the exit.
He huffed, downing one drink after another, not paying attention to what he was drinking, his eyes dropping back to the bar in front of him. His thoughts involuntarily returning to the girl, but he stubbornly pushed them away. Frustrated and angry by the fact he couldn’t get her out of his head. Hurt and angry by the fact his mother managed to get to him once again.
By the time he was done and ready to leave the club, he was more than tipsy, and the anger boiling inside him became only bigger. Beckett rose abruptly, almost tripping over his feet. He looked around, searching for Zeph, but couldn’t find him, so he typed him a quick message letting him know that he about to head back to his place. When he was just about to exit the club, he felt someone bump straight into him. His arms instinctively wrapped around the person’s shoulders, preventing them both from the fall.
“Don’t you ever look where you are going,” groaned Beckett angrily, after realizing that this was the same girl he ran into earlier. The same girl, which he couldn’t get out of his mind after watching her dance. The intensified anger coursing through him.
“Don’t you?” parried she as angrily, throwing his hands from her shoulders, taking a step back.
“I watched,” he snapped, taking a step forward, looming over her. Their eyes locked onto each other.
“Funny thing! As this is already a second time you run into me. So now if you excuse me I need to go,” snapped Maeve, abruptly turning around. Swaying a little, she was ready to leave before Beckett firmly grabbed her hand, turning her to face him. Their lips were just a breath away, and their breathing elevated from the anger seethed in both of them. “For Christ's sake, what is your problem!” cried Maeve, feeling his body firmly pressing into hers. His hand letting go of her, and his fingers painfully digging into her hips. They both glared onto each other, breathing the same air, feeling how the electricity crackling between them. Their eyes dropped to each other’s lips simultaneously, and before they both could realize it they moved toward each other. And their lips met in a passionate hungry kiss intensified by their anger, while their minds switched off, giving way to lust. Both intoxicated by the amount of alcohol they consumed and the blind fury they felt at that moment. Their kisses grew hungrier and rougher, meeting in a bruising kiss, their hands exploring each other bodies not able to break contact.
“Your or mine place,” panted Maeve, feeling the desire building inside her from the way his body was pressing her into the wall. Feeling his hardening member against her abdomen. She hooked her leg around his hip, his hand traveling up under her dress, along her thigh, toward her soaking center. She groaned when his fingers grazed the dampened material, dragging his finger over her panties.
“Yours,” groaned he, feeling how wet she was already, feeling how painfully hard he became. “I have a roommate,” mumbled he, cutting out anything, that she was about to say with the kiss. The mix of alcohol, lust, and anger clouded their minds and they stumbling went toward the exit, catching a taxi. He couldn’t make what address she gave to the driver, not even caring how far this place was from his. The only thing he cared at that moment was to get to the bed with this girl and fuck her senselessly, forgetting everything about his mother and the pain she caused to both her children. Not even caring, why this girl on his arms is willing to jump into the bed with a complete stranger.
It took them twenty-five minutes of the ride to get to Maeve’s place. All the way, they were on each other. Kissing, caressing and touching. Doing things, they would never do sober, with the person they just met. When they got to her place, he pulled her out of the car, lifting her so her legs were wrapped around his waist. Without even looking around they stumbled toward the house kissing hungrily. He pinned her against the front door, his kisses growing more impatient when she struggled to open the front door. His teeth grazing the sensitive skin of her neck biting her lightly eliciting a hoarse moan from her lips, before the door finally gave way, letting them in.
When inside he turned them around pressing her firmly to the opposite wall. His mouth moving along her neck and ear, the air between them crackling with electricity. Each lick and suck of his lips, each bite on her skin made her moan louder and more desperate, and he silenced them with his lips, crushing them on hers. Her legs tightened around his waist even more, bringing him closer to her, grinding against his throbbing member. He groaned stumbling toward the stair breaking their kiss just for a second, their eyes meeting, filled with something more than raw anger and lust they felt before. When he starts to speak his voice is husky and breathless, and his eyes burning deep into hers with an intensity she never knew existed.
“Where?” the only word he mastered to say, his hands rested under her ass, already halfway upstairs, taking two steps in the time. Their lips moving in unison, stumbling through the door into the room she pointed, shutting the door behind them with a loud thud.

Geralt | Salvation
Tumblr media
Prompt: “You’ve been a bad girl.” Word count: 1900+ Warnings: Smut, swearing, prostitution
The smell of alcohol and sexual tension hung around the room, laughter audible, echoing through the tavern. I sat at my usual table, one leg draped over the other, back straightened as I applied my make up, dark red lipstick that would stain any man I would kiss. Ever so often, my gaze fluttered towards the door to see if a certain, regular customer of mine would enter. Disappointed sighs left my lips every time a drunkard barged in, babbling he would plough the hottest of us all. I reached for my perfume flask, spraying a royal amount in my neck and on the insides of my wrists. It was Tuesday, he should be here any moment now. Impatiently, I tapped my nails against the table. I chewed on my lip before dragging a hand through my (h/c) locks, trying to look as seductive and sexy as possible. A few men shot me suggestive glances, but I ignored them. Tonight was reserved for somebody else, a certain White Wolf dropping by for a drink, sex and some rest.
I grew restless as a few hours passed. Men entered and left again after being satisfied, yet I did not do a single thing tonight. I chugged down another Kaedweni Stout, rubbing my temples in agony. 'Tonight was a fucking waste of time.' I muttered, sighing deeply. 'Did you say something, (Y/n)?' I nearly got a heart attack as Geralt suddenly stood behind me, his swords draped over his back, his face caked with mud. 'I thought you wouldn't show up anymore.' He gave me a charming smirk. 'I always do, except if I am dead. I never want to miss an opportunity to see you.' I couldn't fight the blush that grew on my face. 'Shall we go to my room?' I asked him, twirling a strand of my hair around my finger. 'Of course.' Geralt answered, gesturing towards the stairs as a sign he wanted me to go first. Probably to look at my butt as we climbed the steps, that was. My room smelled a bit musky, so I threw open a window. Geralt flinched the moment we walked in. He dropped his stuff in the corner, making his way to the washing basin to carry out the usual ritual of washing his face, armpits and private parts. As he gazed at his hands fiddling in the water, I wrapped my arms around him from behind, pressing my lips against a few scars on his muscled back. 'What's the matter?' I whispered, feeling his wet hands wrap around mine. 'How many men, (Y/n)?' I tensed, wanting to withdraw my grip on Geralt. His nails dug into my skin all of a sudden. 'How many?' he repeated, 'Five? Six?' I managed to free myself, whipping around to walk towards the window for a few gulps of fresh air. 'Twelve.' Geralt let out a huff, dragging his hands through his white locks. 'Twelve. You slept with twelve men in just one week. No matter my sense of smell is so overreacting right now.' I closed my eyes, leaning on the windowframe. 'It is bound to happen, Geralt. I am a prostitute. It is my bloody job!' The Witcher shook his head. 'No, (Y/n), stop that. You can find another job.' 'Like what? No one wants to hire an ex-strumpet! As soon as I leave the trade, the news about me being a retired whore will spread around like a wildfire!' Geralt let out a groan of frustration. 'Petite Nina from three rooms down the hall slept with twenty-seven this week. I could top that easily had I not reserved my Tuesday evenings for someone else.' His cat-like eyes bore into me. 'Don't say that. I don't want to think of you sleeping with other men.'
'It's unavoidable. I need to live too, to pay for my food. Even a bit of rent for this room.' Geralts fists clenched and unclenched. 'Why do you act all surprised? This is a fucking brothel, Geralt!' The Witcher let out shivery breaths. 'I don't want you to work here anymore. I want you to be mine.' I sat down on top of the bed, crossing my legs. 'I really wish I could be, but the owner will never let me go. She's merciless.' He sat down next to me, putting an arm around me before pulling me into his shoulder. I leaned my head against his chest, sighing deeply. 'What's her price?' 'You wanna buy me with a certain sum of crowns like a piece of livestock.' Geralt grabbed my chin. 'No, (Y/n). Look at me.' I dared to face him, his eyes filled with an emotion I had never seen by any man before. 'I fucking love you, OK? Not just because of the sex.' I closed my eyes, rubbing my temples. 'She wouldn't ever let me go, I think. I am one of the... better courtesans.' Geralt caressed my cheek, his thumb grazing against my skin. 'I shall let her name her price and I will pay it to her, no matter how much.'
'She is asleep at the moment. Still wanna go for that fuck?' A smirk grew on his face as he leaned in to lightly peck my lips. His beard was ticking my chin as he tilted his head to the right. 'I guess we should. Twelve men... You've been a bad girl, (Y/n).'
I giggled as he suddenly flipped me over on my back, hovering over me. His Wolven School necklace brushed against my stomach as he straddled me. I hooked a finger around it, tugging him down for a kiss. Slowly, Geralt started to kiss me. His lips moved against mine in sync, savoring the moment I had longed for an entire week. I hooked my legs around his hips, forcing him to stay close as his tongue slithered into my mouth, rolling it against mine. Of all the men I had ever slept with, Geralt was the best kisser. The best fucker. The most gentle and the most rough. He was the only one I wanted to see again and again. Geralt was the only man I didn't have to fake orgasms with. His fingers fiddled with my bra, taking it off me. Goosebumps covered my arms as he played with my hard nipples, pinching them gently as his lips still kissed me. I moaned into his mouth softly, his long hair falling like a curtain over my face as I undid the ponytail that held it together. The Witcher pulled back for air, a low hum leaving his throat as I bucked my hips against his crotch. 'Aren't you excited?' I chuckled as I felt his solid member twitch against my core. The White Wolf grinned, kissing my neck softly. 'I can smell the other men you slept with in the sheets.' 'Then please, leave your scent behind.' He grabbed my wrists as soon as my hands started to wander to his back. 'None of that. I am in charge.' I smiled seductively. 'Then go ahead.' His lips pecked my collarbone, one of my breasts as he undid his underwear. His kisses trailed downwards, over my stomach. I arched my back as he breathed over my core, kissing my thighs. He hooked his fingers around my thongs, taking it off me. 'I rather spread the scent of our mixed juices instead of just mine.' I chewed on my lip, the spot between my legs growing wetter and wetter every second. Geralt smiled, crawling over me again so he was facing me.
'Are you going to be a good girl from now on?' 'Hmhm.' 'Say it to me.' 'I am going to be a good girl from now on, Geralt.' 'And if I pay your employer for you, will you come with me.' 'Yes.' 'Yes what?' 'Yes Ger-- Oh!'
Without a warning he shoved himself into me, thrusting forward as deep as he could. 'Those tiny men with tiny pricks are nothing compared to my cock, aren't they?' I moaned. 'Yes Geralt, they are nothing.' He started bucking his hips in a quick, unsatisfactory pace. Grunts already left him before I had even adjusted to his size, the head of his cock hitting my g-spot over and over without showing mercy. Pleasure was soon present in the pit of my stomach, making me see stars as his hot breath blew against my neck, his husky voice whispering dirty words in my ear. 'You like that, (Y/n)?' I raked my nails across his back. 'Are you going to give me some more scars? Give them to me, darling.' he groaned, speeding up. His hands were propped on both sides of my head, trapping me from turning my face from his as if I even wanted to. 'Fuck, Geralt.' My fingers dug into his skin, clawing in his hair. The sloppy sound of his member slipping in and out of me filled the room. Perhaps it was even audible on the other side of the brothel, and part of me hoped it was. I moaned, Geralt leaning down to seal my mouth with his. He was slamming in and out of me, numbing the bud between my legs every time the little white patch of pubic hair brushed against it, even if the touch was so gentle it drove me crazy, for the nerves in my clitoris were highly sensitive right now. 'Geralt, I am going to cum...' I cried out, bucking my body into his. The Witcher just chuckled, pulling out his cock. I let out a sob of disappointment. 'What are you doing?' 'You've been a bad girl, (Y/n).' he repeated his sentence from earlier, wrapping his hand around his cum-oozing member. 'Besides, I am going to stain the sheets with my load.' He started to pump himself with his hand. 'Come here, baby, help me out.'
I gathered myself from the loss of his cock, taking it in my palm now. I gave a few tugs, making Geralt bury his hands in my hair. 'Yes, like that.' I started to jerk him off, his swollen member throbbing already. 'Let me cum on the sheets, (Y/n).' I smirked, licking the few first drops off his shaft. 'No, on the sheets, not in your mouth.' I pouted, swiping my tongue against the base anyways. 'I thought you promised to be a good girl.' I smirked, continuing to pump him with my hand. 'Let me cum. Now.' I sped up, sperm dripping over my hand right now. Geralts cat eyes found mine, the certain glint in them indicating his high approaching quickly. 'Yes, darling, yes.' I leaned to the side so my sheets were free to be released on. Geralt grunted, ejaculating all over the soft fabrics. I let out a laugh as he panted heavily, gripping my hair even tighter. 'Yes, good girl. Good girl.' I let go of his member, letting him push me onto the bed again. He pressed his mouth against mine, drawing air from me. I could hear his quickened heartbeat and felt the hot seed underneath me. 'Stay here.' Geralt breathed, pulling back and grabbing his underwear. 'I am going to wake up your employer and pay for you, so you can come with me as soon as we wake up. I am going to get you out of here.' I smiled, watching him dress up messily. He still looked like sex as he left, his legs still trembling a bit. I buried my head into my pillow, and as I inhaled, I could smell him in the sheets.

My Roommate is an Asshole.
Gajevy Week 2019 - Fairy Tail
You can find these collections and more Gajevy prompts on FF and Ao3 under CapAleran2.
Storyline: “Excuse me, I think I heard you wrong. What?” Her voice trembled with the last word.
The only available apartment in the complex had been accidentally rented to two different people.
GW: Roommates Suck #1 - My Roommate is an Asshole.
Well. This was certainly unexpected.
The situation was far less ideal than what was promised to Levy. She had signed the official papers the day before fully expecting a nice, comfortable little space for cheap rent, paid utilities, and on-site laundry. It was absolutely perfect. Or had been up until a few minutes ago.
“Excuse me, I think I heard you wrong. What?” Her voice trembled with the last word.
The only available apartment in the complex had been accidentally rented to two different people.
“What the fuck is this shit?” The sudden, loud rumble caused her to jump in place. His baritone voice was rough. It sounded as though he was a smoker.
With watery-rimmed eyes, Levy turned around to see him shove his copy of the legal document in the manager’s face and hold it there to force him to look at it through his square glasses. The menacing scowl deepened as his voice lowered with enunciated words.
“Fix it. Now.”
Levy found herself silently agreeing with the man, although his demand was downright frightening. Despite their obvious differences in word usage, they did have one extremely large issue in common.
“Ah, w-well, you s-see,” the scrawny man stuttered. He fidgeted under the intense, angry gaze blazing down on him. He touched the frames in front of his eyes. “I can't- there's nothing I can d-do about it. Legally, I mean.”
The taller, well-built man's arms twitched and Levy was immediately concerned that there would be an assault if the situation wasn't remedied. And quickly.
She stepped forward, careful to avoid any contact with the other apparently irate tenant and asked,  “What do you mean, legally? There's really nothing that can be done for us?”
The complex manager broke free of the hold on his shirt and righted it on his shoulders. He threw a tentative glance at the other male in the office before answering.
“There are two official documents stating that each of you is now the tenant of apartment 2B, submitted the same day by two different employees. Apparently, there was a miscommunication in the availability.”
He pulled out a file from the grey filing cabinet against the back wall. Within were the separate contracts both had previously signed. Levy McGarden and Gajeel Redfox were written on the signature lines.
“A miscommunication? Is that what you're calling it? I'd say it's more of a royal fuck up on your end than anything,” Gajeel spat, crossing his arms over his chest.
His choice words and their intensity grated against Levy's psyche. Her hazel eyes briefly shifted to him in mild annoyance.
“Given that there are no other vacant apartments and the deposits have already been made, the only thing I can suggest is maybe... try to live there together. Peaceably, preferably.”
The manager winced after he spoke. He looked at Gajeel and hoped the desk that stood between them was large enough.
Both Levy and Gajeel reacted simultaneously.
“No!”
***
“Yes.”
Levy held her phone to her ear and assured her friend that she was okay. She absentmindedly tapped her finger on the top of her water bottle in the cupholder. “I'm sure it'll be fine,” she said confidently.
“But he's a guy. And one you don't know,” Lucy countered. Her voice sounded unsure.
“Yea, well he's, he's…” Levy paused.
She turned to look out of her driver's side window to see Gajeel sitting in his jeep a few spaces over. He punched the steering wheel a few times. It looked like he was talking to himself.
“...he's different.”
“Mmhmm.”
“We will just have to make the best of a bad situation. I doubt he'll be that bad. The office runs background checks before they consider who can apply.”
“If you say so.”
When she said goodbye to her friend, Levy grabbed her new apartment key and headed for the stairwell.
It was enclosed inside the brick building, which would be ideal in colder weather. A vending machine for both snacks and beverages stood at the far end and marked the entrance to the laundry area. It was all just more checks on the list of good things the complex offered.
She smiled when she saw her appointed number and letter on the brown door. The apartment was neither too far from nor too close to the stairwell. She probably wouldn't hear the other tenants coming and going, especially at night. It also meant she would have a quiet place to read and write with the windows open on the nice warm days. Inserting the key and giving it a turn, Levy happily entered her home.
The distinct new carpet smell welcomed her. A tiled floor by the door gave way to the beige carpet. Through a foyer-like space was the large front room. A half wall separated it from the kitchen. All the appliances were there on the countertops, ready to be used. Beyond that were a hallway, the bathroom and the two bedrooms.
She gazed around, mentally picturing where she would arrange the furniture, where she would place her bookshelves and her pictures. What did this Gajeel have to bring to the table to add to their shared home? Until she knew, she couldn't plan everything out quite yet.
Her hands clasped at her chest around the key, a contented sigh escaped through her nose in the quiet.
A rough bang on the half closed entry announced the presence of another. The abused door flew open to hit against the rubber stopper on the wall. Gajeel trudged in carrying a full cardboard box the size of a small microwave. A stuffed black backpack clung to one of his shoulders.
He briefly halted a few paces ahead of his unexpected roommate, his head swung around like on a swivel to survey the empty place. He didn't even give Levy a second glance as he asked, “Why've ya just been standin’ there?”
Levy's dry lips parted. No words formed. Her wide eyes slid down his tall, broad form, from his uninterested expression to the box cradled between two massive arms. He was terribly intimidating; if he had wanted to he could have snapped her petite body in half with minimal effort.
She blinked.
Gajeel left her still standing in the middle of the living area to check out the bedrooms. The toe of his black boot pushed open one and then he disappeared inside.
Out of curiosity, Levy deliberately peered in from around the wall. It was a spacious area. There were three windows that illuminated the entire room without the need for the overhead light.
The box and backpack had been set on the carpet. He was standing in the middle under the light fixture, his head turning as he seemingly looked around at nothing but the walls.
Levy kept silent as she spied. Hazel eyes moved from his shaggy mess of thick black hair to the triangular shape of his neck and shoulders.
He hummed to himself and turned his body towards the far wall, his back faced her. Large hands found the waistband of his jeans and rested there. “I think it'll fit,” he murmured.
“What will fit?” Levy asked with sudden interest.
She felt like she was intruding, but they were set up to share a small apartment. There was bound to be some future privacy issues. She shuddered and hoped they wouldn't be too crowded.
He responded as if he had known she was there watching all along, saying, “My drum set.”
Levy's heart sped up the moment she heard. Her vision of quiet, relaxing evenings was shattered with his nonchalant words about a musical instrument. “A drum set?! Like an actual big, loud drum set?”
“Relax Shorty,” he drawled. He was still standing there with his hands perched on his hips. “It's electric. The sound's through a headset.” He tapped the side of his head.
Her eyes fell, half-lidded with displeasure. Why did he call her that? She crossed her arms. “I'm not short.”
“Sure,” he dismissed with a scoff. His attention was elsewhere. Somewhere in that big -but sort of handsome- head of his. Whatever was in there.
Her apprehension subsided a bit with that knowledge that he would have a headset. She glanced towards the other bedroom and wondered what it looked like beyond the closed door. Her peripheral detected a shift in the light, and she felt more than saw Gajeel brush past her. His arm knocked hard into her shoulder as he turned the corner in the narrow hall.
“Hey,” she announced. Her hand came up instinctively to lay on her collarbone. Her mouth set into a firm line. Her eyes bore a hole in the back of his head. And he just walked away? He hadn't even said sorry.
When he didn't stop, she frowned and put effort into it. “Gajeel!” she yelled.
“What?” He asked in annoyance with an enunciated ‘T’. His boots planted there on the living room carpet and he slowly turned to look at her, his palm held up in the air.
Words that Levy had been ready to let loose on him swiftly left her at the sight of his chilling frown. Instead, she dumbly stood exactly where she had been. Was it fear? Was she apprehensive because of his dark looks or his fearsome and reckless attitude?
“Um, I- uh-”
His pierced eyebrow rose.
Levy stuttered. “W-what are you doing?”
She inwardly cringed. Why couldn't she think of something else, something better to say? That was it? She could confront assholes on the street more easily than this particular one. Her mind was completely blank.
“I'm going to bring my shit up here,” he replied steadily. His tone was notably close to condescending. “What else is there to do?”
And then he simply left the apartment, not bothering to touch the open door on his way out.
With a long, silent huff, Levy quickly shook her fist in the air after him, her anger turned to frustration. She pulled the door closed and headed down to the parking lot after him. Like Gajeel, she too had things to bring up from her car. The rest of the furniture was in the back of a small trailer.
On her way out of the building entrance, Gajeel passed her carrying another full cardboard box, almost running into her once again. It was as if he didnt see her at all. His focus was on the stairs before him as he ascended.
Levy's frown deepened and her mouth fell slightly open while she stared. A tiny sound escaped her throat. What was with this guy?
A sense of dread began to fill her stomach. Maybe she would have to find another place. But then if she did her current deposit was forfeited. She couldn't afford to shell out another moving fee and deposit.
Groaning, she did the only thing she could think of at that moment and start officially moving in. All of the items she had fit in her car she comfortably toted up to the apartment. Unlike her new roommate's, her things went directly to her bedroom, set along the back wall to make room for the bigger items later.
It was small. Smaller than the room Gajeel had claimed. It had built in bookshelves on either side of the doorway, which was a pleasant surprise. But what it lacked in initial space it made up for in a large walk-in closet.
When she strolled out from the hall, the carpet was littered with his junk. Her lip wanted to curl. Was he a slob? Random crates and rickety boxes overflowing with Gajeel's personal items. Mostly clothing, though there was a laptop, music devices, and a distasteful calendar that Levy covered over with a rogue jacket that was draped over the side of a box, among other things.
Her gaze landed on a blue milk crate full of books. It was set apart from the rest, on a haphazardly placed brown end table by the hall's light switch.
Gajeel was a reader? From what she’d encountered so far, Levy would have never pegged him. There really was more to someone than outward appearance.
Gently picking through the books, she found that most of them were classics. Their hard covers were worn from use, the pages creased on the top corners. None of them had bookmarks. She had to tell him not to dog-ear his books like that.
“What’re you doing?” his rough voice announced in question.
The three books tumbled from her hands to fall in a heap by the table. His unexpected voice had scared her. “Um, I was just looking. Sorry,” she began as she bent to pick up the downturned books. “I love to read so I just…” Trying to find an excuse, her lips fell silent.
He considered her for a moment, the drawers to a dresser occupying his arms. It seemed as though he wanted to say something, but thought better of it. His mouth shut. He didn't seem angry, but Levy was cautious.
“Don't ya have yer own things to get?” he calmly asked instead. His red eyes gave her a once over before settling back to her face.
Relief rushed through Levy at his civility. “Yes, but I was waiting for you. I need help. I've gotten everything that I could manage myself.”
He humphed and continued about his business, taking the drawers to his room. When he re emerged some seconds later, he gestured to her without slowing down. “Alright. Come on.”
Without needing to be told a second time, Levy followed her roommate.
“It's the trailer there,” she said once they were in the parking lot. A silver trailer was parked in the back. After they emptied it, she would have to notify for its pickup.
“I kinda figured,” Gajeel commented. There was only one moving trailer on the lot.
“Right.” Levy bit her cheek. Her eyes flickered up to him.
His lips were twisted, as if he was trying not to smile. He turned his head away, seemingly interested in a few birds flying overhead before she could be sure.
Standing by the ramp, Levy let him walk in and start picking things to haul out. She watched with her arms crossed over her chest as he picked up a large, clear tote of notebooks, pencil pouches, and various books with a grunt.
The sound of something rolling around inside abruptly stopped as he presented it, most likely a loose pen or pencil. His eyebrow rose and he looked at her.
“I like to write, okay?”
Her lips slid into a grin when she watched him shake his head and his confused expression give way to his own version of a smile.
Soon only her mattress and the bed frame, her bookshelves, dresser, and a long desk were the only things left. She had no idea how she would have gotten them out and up the stairs without his help. The only reason they were in the trailer to begin with is she had had help in moving out of her old place.
He took most of the weight, letting her steer them once they hit the stairwell. His patience with the desk had nearly expired when they hit the wall as they maneuvered the corner, causing the desk's edge to punch into his stomach.
“Lift it, Levy,” he commanded, looking up at her from the bottom. The legs were scraping the steps.
“I am.”
She threw her weight upwards only for nothing to happen. The wooden box drawers were on both ends, making it nearly impossible for her. They should have taken them out before they started the trek, but they couldn't now in the narrow space.
“Yer doin’ it wrong,” he roughly accused.
“How am I wrong?” She answered back just the same. One of her hands came up on reflex, her palm upwards in irritation.
He lowered his head as she spoke and blew out a quick breath in his own annoyance. He lifted his end once more, but when he did, the corner caught the brick wall, effectively halting his progress before it could really begin.
His body continued right into the stationary edge.
Bouncing backwards from it, Gajeel doubled over. A pained growl rumbled from his chest. His mouth formed around a word, but refrained from spitting it out.
“Oh my gosh, are you ok?” Levy blurted. She let go of her end of the desk.
“Get out of the way,” he ordered. Anger -probably more embarrassment- simmered in his eyes.
She did so and watched with astonishment as he gathered himself and hauled, lifting the long piece of furniture with a deep grunt. He was fast enough to use the momentum and all but throw it and himself up around the corner.
The desk was now set for a straight path up the rest of the way and to their apartment.
Levy was immediately grateful that she had Gajeel for any heavy lifting.
Giving a breath, he turned to her. His eyes were now impassive. “Can you get around it?” He asked.
Levy hummed. There was a few inches of space between the desk and the brick wall, but she knew she wouldn't be able to fit. “Only a kid could squeeze through there. But, I think I could climb over it.”
Gajeel simply stood to catch his breath and let her do what she had suggested. In amusement, he placed his hands on his hips and watched as her tiny form scrambled up and over the smooth tabletop. Her jean shorts accentuated her curves and her plump ass stared squarely up at him for the briefest of moments.
A grin spread on his face. He let himself look, but kept his hands on his waistband.
Once they were at their apartment with the desk safely in her bedroom without further incident, they shut the front door with a sigh.
The place was an absolute wreck. Nothing was organized and nothing was in a convenient setup. The couch was shoved halfway in the kitchen with her clothing totes upon it. There was one visible walkway through the living room to the hall, the rest of the floor and furniture was littered.
Levy was thirsty, but the box containing kitchen utensils was somewhere buried under the mess. It would take them a few days to sort everything out. “What do you wanna do for dinner?” she asked aloud.
“I dunno.” His voice was muffled. It sounded a little distant as he worked on neatly plugging in the tv and game consoles at the outlet behind the big flat screen. “I don't care, do what ya want.”
“You don't have a favorite place to eat?”  she asked.
“I'll eat anything, just pick something.”
Levy hummed. “Chinese? There's a place a few blocks from here.”
“That's fine,” he replied, and then popped up triumphantly. He turned on the tv. On the screen was the console main logo. Without turning to Levy, he said, “After we eat, ya wanna try out yer new tv?”
Looking up from the restaurant's menu on her phone, she saw the screen as he punched in his passcode. The more she looked at the set up, the more she felt out of her element. “I don't know, I've never really played on one…”
“Really, well yer gonna learn tonight.” Gajeel cleared an area of the floor a few feet from the tv stand and abruptly sat down. He kicked off his boots and quickly took off his grey shirt, leaving him in a white tank. He picked up the controller.
“What about the mess in here?” She lifted a hand and waved it at all of the things brought up and thrown in no particular order as if showcasing a nice car on display.
Gajeel made a sound with his mouth. “We're gonna be here for at least a year. We can sort it tomorrow. Give yer'self a break.” He added with an afterthought, “Does that Chinese place deliver?”
“Uhh.” She scrolled down on her phone. “Yes.”
“Order it for delivery and then get over here.” He let a genuine smile slip up on his face. He set a black controller beside him as if to save her a seat.
Her own smile appeared as she ordered their food. Then she picked her way through their junk and slowly sat down beside him. He was at ease and relaxed as he started to explain a game he thought she would enjoy. When he presented an eye creasing smile, his red eyes warm, she found herself begin to mirror him. Maybe having a new roommate wouldn't be so bad...

So, the hoverbike could have belonged to Shiro at some point, and here’s how:
The only canon information we have on the hoverbike is that it once belonged to Keith’s dad, and eventually became Keith’s, but that doesn’t mean your headcanon of Shiro owning the bike contradicts this! (or, you know, it can if you want it to, but it doesn’t have to)
We all know it was Keith’s in the first season, so I’m not going to clutter this meta with screenshots of that. What is causing some confusion however, is how we know Keith’s dad owned it, so here’s a quick summary of that:
This is a screenshot from season 6:
Tumblr media
It’s from Keith and Krolia’s vision of her and Keith’s dad leaving to protect the blue lion from the Galra that found it. It doesn’t show Keith’s dad explicitly getting on the bike, but it’s implied. (I mean, we know it’s not Keith or Shiro guys). So the engine starts, and then we get a quick shot of Keith’s dad twisting the throttle:
Tumblr media
There was also a minuscule shot of the hoverbike flying towards the three falling ships:
Tumblr media
So, now we’ve established that the first owner of the hoverbike was definitely Keith’s dad, and I know what you’re thinking:
Why would Shiro ever own it then? The natural conclusion to all of this would be that Keith simply inherited the bike. That’s usually how these things work.
You’re right, it is. But it’s not the only way things could have gone.
Look at the flashback of Shiro leaning against the bike:
Tumblr media
It’s not exactly something most of us would do with a bike we didn’t own, or with someone we weren’t exceedingly close with, which Shiro and Keith weren’t at this particular moment in time. (I’ve got a meta about that here)
So assuming that the hoverbike does belong to Shiro in this scene, how did he get it?
Well for starters, remember how young Keith was when his dad died?
Tumblr media
Now I know he’s a runt, but he can’t be older than 10 here, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he were younger.
So what happens to property of minors in foster care?
As a minor Keith wouldn’t be able to control or make executive decisions regarding things like the shack, any money his dad might have left him, and the hoverbike. Instead the court would assign Keith a property guardian. (Usually a family member or trusted friend named in the will, unfortunately most people don’t realize they need to name one, and just assume the property automatically transfers to the minor. Note: It doesn’t.)
Now, this property guardian may not mortgage, rent, lease, charge, or transfer Keith’s property by sale, gift, exchange or otherwise without the previous permission of the court.
However, the property guardian may petition the court to do those things for the benefit of the minor, their protection, and/or education. Some states require that the minor be given notice once they reach a certain age, some don’t.
Keith can make requests regarding the assets of the estate, but everything must go through and be approved of by the property guardian and the courts. He can also request a different guardian, but generally you have to be older to do this, or able to prove the current guardian is unfit, neglecting their duties, or abusing their power.
Why does this matter?
It means that as of this point, the bike is in the care of his property guardian. Keith is too young to fly it, he doesn’t have insurance, he doesn’t have a license, and it is obviously in his best interest to keep him away from the dangerous flying vehicle.
Except do we actually believe that would stop Keith? No. I’m betting that Keith’s dad started teaching him the basics young, and they probably flew together all the time.
So Keith doesn’t let his new caretakers tell him he can’t do this for another six years or so. No, instead, Keith sneaks out to fly it, all the damn time.
This is a problem. Small children are not allowed to drive, especially such fast, dangerous machines, it just isn’t safe. That being said, how can they stop him? They can’t just keep him locked up. They also don’t have the manpower to keep him in line of sight 24/7. So what do they do? They get rid of it.
Now, their first option is to petition the court to sell it, citing safety concerns and using the money towards Keith’s education. (There’s also the fact that if the bike lies unused as long as it takes for Keith it get his license, it will fall apart and lose most if not all value.)
Option number two is less ethical, but as far as I can tell still technically legal: The next time Keith sneaks out to ride it, his caretakers call the police, and get him charged with illegal vehicle usage. This could result in the hoverbike being impounded. Not only is retrieving an impounded vehicle expensive, you also have to provide insurance. Keith’s caretakers and property guardians can effectively block him from getting it back, and even being compensated for it. After a set period the hoverbike is sold at auction.
Regardless, Keith doesn’t see it again for years, until:
Tumblr media
Shiro shows up towards the end of class to give a recruitment speech at Keith’s school. Keith ignores him for the most part, until he looks out the window and sees his dad’s hoverbike in the parking lot.
Shiro bought it on a whim. He has a soft spot for old things. They have so much character, and he likes imagining the stories they would tell if they could. The bike is basically his baby, and he loves it. (Matt definitely makes fun of him for it)
When the class ends Keith races outside. He studies it, eyes stinging, chest tight, as he takes in every familiar dent and ding. It’s definitely his. Shiro comes out to hind him still transfixed. He takes in the little tremors as the kid obviously holds back tears and his brows dip in concern. He asks him if he’s okay. Keith just shakes his head, trying to find a way to speak without everything spilling over.
When he finally does, his voice is rough with a grief that punches Shiro in the gut, “It was my dad’s.”
Shiro doesn’t know what to say. He wants to apologize, but the words feel hollow on his tongue. He doesn’t know how to do this. The Garrison didn’t teach him how to comfort or assure.
Shiro bites his lip, an idea forming. It’s a terrible idea, but it’s all he’s got. “Can you fly?”
Keith’s head jerks up, confused, he nods. Shiro smiles softly, taking the keys out of his pocket and holding them out. “Wanna go for a ride?” (He’ll berate himself later for the terrible word choice)
Fuck, if he didn’t do something right though, because the kid lights up and before he could blink they were gone. For once Shiro was the one having to hold on for dear life. (Matt was somewhere laughing his ass off at the sweet revenge)
When they stop Shiro’s breathless. He’d asked if the kid could fly, and holy shit could he fly.
Tumblr media
They talk for while. Shiro convinces him to join the Garrison and offers to vouch for him. He also learns where the bike came from and how it got there, and it breaks his heart. He wants to give it back then and there, but Keith’s afraid it will get taken again, so Shiro promises to keep the bike safe until Keith turns 18.
Later, Keith confesses he’s glad Shiro ended up with the bike.
Cue the boys spending their free time flying in the desert. Remember that cliff dive in the first episode? You can’t tell me that’s the first time he tried that shit. I am fully convinced he attempted this and all sorts of other stunts to scare the hell out of Shiro. And also to feel those beefy arms tighten around him.
When it comes time for the Kerberos mission Shiro signs the bike over to Keith. (Personally I like the idea of him giving the keys and the title to Keith on the launch platform)
So. Yeah. Everybody could have owned the bike :p

Next in The Death of the Moon, all of which is here. This chapter is around 2000 words and it’s overall a long saga, but I’d say we’re about 1-2 chapters from the close. Like what I did here? Leave a nice comment and make me smile! If you really like it, I have a Ko-Fi here as well.
“How’s she holding up?” Makoto stirred the dip mixture in her bowl absently, more focused on Minako’s facial expression than evenly distributing the ingredients.  The movie nights at her apartment had become almost a weekly tradition now, a means to keep all of them together even without meeting over Senshi duties.
“Good as can be expected,” Minako replied flatly, reaching for a cookie even though she knew Makoto would swat her hand away.  She did so, and the blonde responded by sticking her tongue out playfully.  “I mean, she’s honestly doing great with the leg thing, she’s too distracted by her soul having been ripped from her body,” she deadpanned, rolling her eyes at the conclusion of the sentence.
Makoto silently wondered if she should feel guilty that Haruka wasn’t angsting over her leg any more given the circumstances as Minako prattled on.  “I mean, Miss Succubus isn’t doing super well, according to Rei. Guess it’s good to know there’s a heart in there somewhere.”  She rolled her eyes as her hand dipped into her pocket, pulling out her vibrating cellphone.  “Rei says she’ll be here in five.  Ami’s just got a nasty car accident in the ER, so they need all the interns on deck and she’s gonna be late.”
The dip was spooned into its serving tray, already crowded with various vegetables and crackers. “Cool.  Take this into the living room, will you?”  She thrust the tray into Minako’s hands, causing her to fumble putting away her phone before accepting the offering.  “And don’t eat it all!” Makoto called after her, turning around to take the cheesecake bites out of the fridge.
“Holy SHIT, Mako, where did you get this TV?  It’s massive!” Minako cried, ogling the new television that easily took up half of Makoto’s wall space.
Makoto crossed her small apartment quickly and set the food on her coffee table, already crowded with other treats.  “That would be a gift from the Succubus, as you called her.”  She shrugged at Minako’s stunned expression.  “It came this morning with a little card.  She said she felt bad she never comes so she wanted to send a ‘small token of appreciation,’” she added with air quotes. Michiru’s idea of “small” was obviously much different than their own.
The Outers had been invited to the movie nights, but none had ever showed up.  Haruka had been too busy drowning in her own self-loathing, Setsuna just sent polite refusals, and Michiru had never even replied.  Minako had spitefully commented that she must have felt herself too good to even lower herself to an RSVP, but Michiru’s rather lavish gift told a different story to Makoto.  She was still debating what she was going to make and send as a thank-you of her own—she had decided on a few Petit Fours but was still tossing up different flavor combinations in her mind.
“Well.  That was nice of her.”  Minako spat out the words with difficulty, sounding about as convincing as a child who had received socks instead of games for their birthday. “She’s still a soulless squid monster though,” she muttered petulantly, crossing her arms as she flopped down on the couch.
Makoto was spared from responding when the door opened, Rei marching in and slamming it behind her. “Sorry, the line at the video store was insane,” she huffed, tossing a bag with several rented DVDs onto the floor.
Minako rolled her eyes and popped a pretzel into her mouth.  “Rei, I told you, we should just get Netflix.”
“I don’t watch TV at home, Mina, and using the service once a week, its cheaper to rent a movie overnight.”
Makoto chimed in, “Actually, Rei, my new TV came with a year free of Netflix and Hulu, so…”  She trailed off and looked at the sad plastic bag wilted on her floor, a cracked corner of a case poking out.  “I didn’t set it up yet though, so this is fine for tonight!” she finished, cracking a smile to try and diffuse the tension.
Thankfully, Rei was too distracted by the mention of a new TV to go on a diatribe about corporate greed and small businesses as she spun around to look at the appliance.  “Damn, I didn’t think she was going to do this,” she said quietly, eyes roving over the huge curved screen, currently displaying the options menu.
“Wait, you knew she was going to send me this?” Makoto asked.  “Why didn’t you warn me?  The guys showed up when I was covered in flour, I felt so bad I wasn’t prepared—”
Rei shook her head as she sat next to her on the couch.  “Michiru told me she wanted to send you some kind of thank-you gift, and she told me she wasn’t sure what, so I said maybe some DVDs or a little sound bar but this…” she trailed off, hand gesturing outward lazily. “This is just Michiru not knowing what a ‘small’ present is, I guess.”
“She didn’t have to give me anything.  She plopped onto her ottoman and nibbled the corner off of one of her cheesecake bites. She had really just invited Michiru on principle, knowing that she would never come, but it didn’t seem right to just invite Haruka and not her too.
“Of course she did,” Mina snorted.  “Her Highness is too good to slum with us peasants, so she sends us cake from the palace instead.”  She bitterly snapped a cracker in two before popping half of it into her mouth.
“Actually,” Rei snapped back, “she doesn’t come because she knows you hate her, and she thinks everyone else doesn’t like her and we just put up with her because of Haruka, and she doesn’t want to spoil our fun. But you wouldn’t know that, because you’re too intent on looking at her as some kind of monster.”  Rei’s face was flushed, and she knew immediately that she had just betrayed Michiru’s confidence, but she was too mad to care. “You know, she’s my friend, and you bitch about her all the time, and I want you to know that she never talks about you, she actually never talks about any of you, in a bad way.  I’m sick of you bashing her.  Michiru’s not perfect, but she’s a person, and though it may shock you, she does have feelings, Mina.”
Minako had slowly been grinding what remained of her cracker to dust in her fist as Rei spoke. “Haruka has feelings too, Rei. You know, Haruka?  My best friend?  That woman who Michiru fucking cheated on?  Sorry that I care a little bit more about her because she’s not some manipulative, back-stabbing —”
“That’s enough!” Makoto roared, standing up to tower over the sitting women, the veins in her neck beginning to throb.  “Minako, Michiru just did something really nice that she didn’t have to do for me, so stop badmouthing her for a few fucking hours while you’re here.  Rei, just…calm down,” she finished lamely.  The other two shut their mouths and slunk back into their seats looking thoroughly chastised, although Rei was a little smug under her abashed expression.
“God, all you two do is fight,” Makoto muttered, flopping back down and putting her head in her hands. “Usagi would be so upset if she saw us like this.”  She had meant for it to stay in her head, but she had whispered the thought aloud accidentally.
The silence lingered heavy in the air, their shared grief thickening the room with its cloying heaviness. “I miss her,” Rei whispered, and they looked up to see her crying, mascara tears falling steadily down her face. It was the first time they had seen her really cry since the funeral, and Makoto gently put her hand on Rei’s lap.
“Me too,” she added, allowing her own tears to fall, adding unneeded salt to the half-finished dessert on her lap.
Minako stared stubbornly at the television, her eyesight going blurry from the tears she was trying to not let fall.  Rei saw this and shifted towards her, trying to be tender, thinking of what Usagi would do. “Mina, it’s okay.  It’s okay if you want to cry.  We can blackmail each other into keeping it a secret that we feel things,” she joked badly, touching her hand gently to Minako’s shoulder.  Minako jerked out of the touch, and Rei, always so resistant to fire, felt for the first time what it was like to be burned.
“You guys cry.  I’m fine.”
“You’re not fine, Minako.  Fuck, none of us are fine,” Makoto added derisively.  “But we’re trying. Maybe it would be easier if we tried together instead of apart.  It’s what she would have wanted.”
“We don’t get to know what she would have wanted because she’s dead, Mako, she’s dead and she’s never coming back, and it’s —” her sentence ended with a shuddering intake of breath as her head dropped down to her chest, blonde hair falling in a thick curtain to hide her face.
“It’s not your fault.” All three whipped their heads to see Ami, who none had even noticed enter, standing with tears in her eyes.  “She’s gone, but it’s not your fault, Minako.”
Minako let out a barking laugh, and the attention turned back to her, tears now streaming freely down her face, lines of black marring her perfect complexion.  “That’s funny.  Maybe you should have gone into stand-up instead of medicine.”  No one responded.  “I told her to do whatever was necessary.  I gave her a command because that’s what General Venus was always meant for, wasn’t it?”  She glared at the ceiling, howling, “I did what you wanted, Serenity, you bitch!  I hope you’re fucking happy!  Maybe next time you should pick a better leader, or maybe wait until we’re not literally children to fucking decide that we get to give up our lives to be your- your puppets!”
Ami approached her and knelt.  “Minako, I ran the numbers, you know that.  If she hadn’t done what she did, the world would have ended.  She would have never been able to live with herself.” She sighed as her eyes looked away, seeing a battle that wasn’t there.  “She was going to do it whether you told her to or not.”
Minako slumped down, the tears falling fast and thick, dotting her leggings with dark spots.  “I know.  It doesn’t change that I was the one that gave her the order, though.”  She looked at her friends uneasily.  “If- if you don’t want me around for a while —” There was an uncharacteristic smallness, a touch of vulnerability in her voice, her self-sure veneer slipping for just a moment, the visor lowered.
Makoto said nothing, but instead crossed and enveloped Minako in a tight hug, which caused her to start sobbing in earnest again.  “You- are- the worst hugger, Mako,” she hiccupped, burying her face into the warm shoulder in front of her.  “Your hugs- make- me- cry.”
“I know, I know,” she replied soothingly, stroking Minako’s hair gently, holding her the way she remembered being held by her mother as a child, trying to convey love through just her embrace as her mother had done.  She felt Ami scoot closer and envelop Minako on the left, and after a moment of hesitation, Rei rounded out the embrace on the right, her still slightly warmer than average body temperature adding extra warmth.  They allowed themselves to cry and to mourn separately, each thinking of what they missed about Usagi the most, each thinking of what they wish they had said to her, and they held each other tighter for all of it, the silent acknowledgement that they would never have to deal with it alone.
Outside the full moon rose, its light shining gently through the window and touching the four women with its shine.

Laxus and Lucy Ship Week 2017: Day 2
I had a different author's note up here, but I felt like something needed to be shared. This is unlike anything I've ever written, and that's because it was a good friend of mine's idea. She really really wanted me to write this, so I did. Unfortunately, she died this past weekend before she could read it. Suicide is no joke. It takes the people the LEAST expected. She showed no signs. Had goals and plans for her future. She even had a tattoo appointment set up for next week. It just happens sometimes. So what I'm asking of all of you readers, is to just hug the ones you care about a little bit more today. Remind them that they're important to you, ok? Without further ado, I give you my take on the second day of Laxus and Lucy ship week 2017. This one is for you, Kia. I'll miss you. Day 2: War. ___ Dear mom, I think it might be starting. When I was little I remember playing with you every day. We would chase each other in the gardens for hours, tickling and rolling around. Our dresses would always get so dirty, and father would get so angry when we'd come back inside covered in grass stains and dirt. That never stopped us though. Those were my favorite times. But then you started to tire too easily. I remember that you would try to play with me as long as you could. How long you were able grew smaller and smaller, until one day you just couldn't at all. So we would read together. Have tea parties. That was when you really started preparing me to take your keys. I realize this now. You wanted to make sure I knew all that I needed to before you couldn't teach me anymore. Thank you for that. Then the breathing fits started. I remember being so scared. You would start coughing and coughing nonstop until you couldn't breathe. Mavis, it was terrifying. There was nothing to do about it but wait until it passed. I was so young, but I remember every little change in you. I think it was because you were my whole world. Father was always working, joining us in playing on the rare occasion. But you and I did everything together. I cherished all of it. Soon, you grew pale and thin. Food never stayed down long. I know you tried to hide it, the retching, but I could hear it sometimes from your room. Not too long after that, you gave me your keys. You told me you were planning on passing them down to me at my age, but I knew the truth. You couldn't summon them anymore. I saw the sad looks shared between you and the Spirits when I would summon them. Eventually, you couldn't stand for long periods of time before you got dizzy. You stayed seated, until you couldn't even do that. You would sleep throughout the day, but when you were awake we would cuddle under the blankets. We would read, or gossip, tell silly stories, giggling like mad until our sides ached. But then, you died. I will never forget that day. A maid woke me in the middle of the night, saying you wanted to talk to me. And I just knew. I had this feeling in the pit of my stomach that you were leaving me, and I remember refusing to let myself cry. We cuddled together for hours. I knew you were trying not to cry. You told me about finding love one day, and how a man should treat me. You told me that life would get hard sometimes, but that it would always get better. You said to always forgive, but to never forget. That people always deserved a second chance. You told me to show kindness to everyone I meet, to love my Spirits with all of my heart and to treat them with respect. I knew what it was, mama. You were saying goodbye. I took in every word you spoke, memorizing everything because I never wanted to forget a single word you said. You gave me so many kisses, and held me close until I started to get tired. I wanted to stay, but you had a maid take me back to my room so I could sleep. I looked at you the entire time I walked away, ingraining every part of your smiling face to memory. I watched you until the door shut between us. You were gone before I even woke up. I remember the signs. Every stage you went through, and I think it's happening to me, just like it did to you. Two weeks ago I woke up and I was so tired all day. I thought I was just coming down with something, but it hasn't gone away. I haven't told anyone about it, especially not my team or Natsu. Oh, Natsu. I can't tell him, mama. Any of them. But I can't turn down missions with them forever. Rent is due soon. I guess Mavis only knows how this will go. Love always, Lucy. }{}{}{ Lucy placed the empty mug in her sink to be washed later, before slipping on her knee-high boots and heading out the door. Coffee was only helping so much. She was just so tired. Not the usual drowsiness that comes from not sleeping enough, either. It was a weariness that seeped down into her bones, making her limbs feel a bit too heavy. Trying to keep some sort of normalcy while she still could, the small blonde jumped up to balance along the rail of the canal. "Careful, Miss Lucy! Don't fall in!" The fishermen called out to her as they sailed past on their boat. Sending them a bright smile, she waved to them. "I won't! Have a great day, guys!" They wished her the same, before she jumped from the rail back down to the cobblestone street. The world felt like it shifted slightly, and she stumbled back a step to hold on to the railing. She felt a little winded, as if she had been running instead of only walking and balancing. Closing her eyes as she waited for the vertigo to pass, she sighed. It was definitely happening, it had to be. There weren't any doubts in her mind. The vertigo passed, but she remained still a little longer just to be sure. The last thing she needed was to eat the pavement. "The hell are you doing, Blondie?" A gruff voice suddenly spoke, and she almost jumped right out of her skin. Her eyes snapped open, and a hand flew to her racing heart. An incredibly tall and muscular man was standing a few feet in front of her. He had foregone his usual fur coat due to the Magnolia summer heat, and was wearing a dark purple shirt. The sleeves looked as though they had been torn off, exposing his large arms that were crossed over his wide chest. He was still wearing his usual black dress pants and combat boots. "Mavis, Laxus! You scared the crap out of me." The smaller blonde scolded, chocolate eyes narrowed in slight annoyance. His stormy blue eyes just looked amused, however, and he smirked. "Maybe I wouldn't have scared you if you hadn't been just standing there with your eyes closed in the middle of the street." Feeling the blush creep up her cheeks, Lucy huffed and stomped past him. He caught up to her easily. "Tch. Don't be like that." Refusing to look at him, she clasped her hands behind her back. "Like what? I'm just walking to the guild, Laxus." "Mhm." They were finally right in front of the guild doors when he placed a large hand on her shoulder and leaned in close. His hot breath tickled her ear and sent goosebumps rippling down her arms. "See you later, Blondie." The Dragon Slayer smirked smugly at her flustered face, before straightening and striding into the guild. It took her longer than she would freely admit to shake herself free from her daze. Her movements faltered as the world tilted slightly and she clutched a hand to her forehead. The feeling dissipated quicker than it had the last time, and she plastered a smile on her face before entering the guild. Hearing her team before she saw them, she dodged a flying table and weaved her way through her nakama. They were all sitting together, Gray and Natsu leaning over the table to get into each other's faces. "What was that, you flame freak?" "You heard exactly what I said, slush-for-brains!" The petite blonde waited for the redheaded knight to smash their heads together before she finally took her seat next to Natsu. "Hey guys!" She chirped. Erza's face was stern, but her hazel eyes were soft. "Good morning, Lucy. You look tired. Did you not sleep well?" Ah, nothing really ever got past Erza. Lucy forced her smile not to falter, sheepishly rubbing the back of her neck. "No, I accidentally stayed up too late reading again." The redhead sighed. "Will you be able to participate in a team mission this afternoon?" With that, she paused. Should she be doing missions right now? She was rather exhausted. But she knew that she needed to do this while she still could. Her magic wouldn't remain stable for long, and she needed all of the time with her Spirits that she could get. Let's not forget about rent. So, she nodded, pasting on a cheerful smile. "Of course! I'll just grab some coffee from Mira and then I'll be good as new!" Seeing as Natsu and Gray were still in their post-Erza-smack daze, she wouldn't bother with greeting them until she returned from the bar. If they had recovered by then, anyway. As soon as Erza nodded approvingly, Lucy rose from her seat and made her way to the bar. Feeling a little lightheaded when she got there, she took a seat. "Hello, Lucy. You want your usual?" The silver-haired barmaid asked brightly. Shaking her head with a smile, she rested her head on her hand. "Actually, I could really use some coffee right now." Mira looked oddly at her for a moment, before her usual exuberance returned. "Of course! I'll bring it right out." The blonde thanked her, laid some jewel on the counter, and then turned in her seat to gaze around the guild while she waited. Her heart skipped a beat when she met a pair of stormy blue eyes. Realizing he had been looking at her before she had looked at him, she rose a brow in question. Not even missing a beat, the larger blonde shrugged, sending her a wink before he turned back to the conversation his team was having. When Mira arrived with her coffee, Lucy took it with a blush and ignored her speculative glace, scurrying back to her team. }{}{}{ It was later that evening, that reality hit her in the face. Well, more like arm. She was sitting at the bar, drowning her misery in a large glass of red wine. Her arm hurt, badly. She had been too slow, during a moment of vertigo in the midst of battle. They had managed to corner the dark mages they were fighting when it happened. She was just about to shift into Taurus's Star Dress in her fight against one of the mages to defend herself against his Earth magic. Large boulders were flying at her from all sides, and she figured that she could bat them away with her battle axe. But then the world had shifted, spinning at an odd angle. Leaving her wide open for a boulder to smash into her. She vaguely remembered Natsu screaming her name when she didn't get back up, but all she could focus on was the white-hot searing pain in her arm and the way the world wouldn't stop tilting. Her arm was definitely broken, but with Wendy gone on an extended job for over a week, she would have to deal with the normal healing process. Times like these really made her realize how much they all depended on the little bluenette. Whenever someone was hurt, she always fixed them right up without hesitation. She then realized that she would have to let her arm, and any other future injuries, naturally. If Wendy healed her for anything, she would sense the disease with her magic. Lucy downed the rest of her wine in one go. There would be no 'fixing her up'. She knew from her conversations with the Sky Dragon Slayer that healing illnesses were a lot more complicated than healing an injury. Her ability to cure them depended solely on if it was a temporary problem. But that wasn't the case with this. She knew that this was more than a one-time issue. Her body was at war with itself. Cells were attacking other healthy cells and important tissue. And it would only get worse. She signaled for another drink, whiskey this time. Her body would try to fight back, reclaim its territory, but the abnormal cells multiplied too quickly. It was a fast moving disease. Her mother had only lasted six months. "What's with the long face?" A gruff voice snapped her out of her downwardly spiraling thoughts, and she realized that her glass was already empty. Signaling for another, the small blonde sighed and glanced to the man sitting next to her. "Just a bit stressed." She said curtly, thanking Kinana for the drink when she handed it to her. The larger blonde looked at her for a moment before saying the last thing she ever expected him to say. "Go to dinner with me." She nearly choked on her drink, staring at him with wide eyes. "Huh?" He sighed, staring into her eyes with a look she'd never seen on his face before. He was still a bit reserved. She knew he never opened up much, so it was to be expected, but he seemed a bit gentler somehow. Genuine. "You heard me. Why don't we have dinner together? Just you and me." She blinked at him owlishly. "L-like a date?" Laxus rolled his eyes, but nodded nonetheless. Lucy wasn't sure if it was the drinks she'd had, or what. Maybe it was the desperateness she felt for love that was always shoved down, buried and never examined. She knew she shouldn't. That it could never be more than just a date. But she did. "Alright, Laxus." }{}{}{ Their date was scheduled for the following Friday. Lucy couldn't help but feel a little nervous. Each day she found that the coffee wasn't doing nearly as much as it had in the beginning. But she tried. She really did. She was going to bed as soon as she got home every night, unable to muster the energy to do anything other than change and pass out. There were bags under her eyes, and makeup only hid so much. As Friday rolled around, she hoped with all of her heart that he didn't notice. He noticed. "Wow, you kinda look like shit." Unable to resist, she smacked his arm. Hard. He seemed to catch himself, as barely noticeable pink dusted his cheeks and he started stumbling over his words. "Uh, I didn't mean that! I meant to say tired. You actually look really nice. Just tired. Sorry, I really di-" And then she laughed. Who was she to be offended? She knew she looked like crap, so what did it matter? But this, the sight of Laxus fucking Dreyar stumbling through apologies, was something she never thought she'd ever see. It was adorable. Lucy rested a small hand on his shoulder, smiling genuinely for the first time in weeks. "Let's go on a date, Laxus." He smiled and grabbed her hand. }{}{}{ One date turned into two, then four, then it was six, and suddenly they were a couple. How it happened, she honestly had no clue. She shouldn't be doing this, being so selfish. She couldn't start a relationship when it wouldn't last even a year. When she wouldn't last even a year. She was getting worse. It had been almost three months since the symptoms started. She was still tired and getting dizzy spells. Jobs were getting harder. Hiding this was getting harder. Natsu already knew something was wrong. She'd catch him watching her, an odd look on his face. But he never brought it up. For that, she was thankful. Trying to hide this from Laxus, now that was exhausting. He was almost always around. Every spare moment he had, he spent by her side. They were walking back from dinner, hand in hand. He was escorting her home, when all of a sudden vertigo hit her. Hard. She lost her footing and went careening to the side, her free hand pressed to her head. She would have fallen, but he reacted fast, pulling her by the hand he was holding into his arms. "Lucy! Are you ok?" The Dragon Slayer asked worriedly. She forced herself to smile, giggling when he adjusted her in his strong arms. "Y-yeah. I think the wine just caught up to me." Stormy blue eyes watched her for a moment longer, before he chuckled and continued walking with her cradled in his arms. "Little drunkard." He teased. Feigning a pout, she slapped his chest lightly and he just laughed. Laxus carried her all the way to her apartment, even when the world righted itself and she said she was fine to walk beside him. The pout on her lips was genuine this time as he ignored her protests. He carried her up the steps, unlocked her door, and sat her on the couch. She crossed her arms under his chest, glowering at him despite the pink dusting her cheeks and the affection in her eyes. "You didn't have to do that." The Dragon slayer merely smiled at her, bending over at the waist from where he stood before her so that their faces were only inches apart. "I know." He breathed, his breath ghosting across her lips. "But I wanted to." Chocolate gazed into stormy blue, completely mesmerized by the sheer adoration found in them. "Oh." Was all she could muster. The couple stayed that way for a few moments, neither realizing that the space between them was closing until his nose brushed against hers. They had shared many kisses before, some sweet and gentle. Some were heated and impassioned. But this one was different. There was this intense need blooming within her every time their lips crashed together. The need for what, she wasn't sure. She only knew that she wanted more of him. Needed more. Her slender fingers carded through his thick blonde locks at the nape of his neck, tightening their hold when his tongue slid across her lower lip. He growled, and suddenly she was airborne. Large hands cupped her ass, mouths never disconnecting, as he carried her to her room. A gasp parted her lips, and he didn't hesitate to tangle their tongues together. As her back hit the mattress, she couldn't think of anything else but this large hands sliding down her body. She wasn't thinking about the disease. She wasn't the girl with the expiration date. She felt like she was just Lucy. She felt loved. }{}{}{ It started as a tickle in the back of her throat, and she noticed it as soon as she awoke one morning. Laxus had just left for the guild after a night spent tangled together beneath the sheets. She was torn with how she felt. The past three and a half months with him at her side had been the best times in her life. Without a doubt, she loved him. But she shouldn't. Couldn't. She shouldn't be leading him on like this. He hadn't said it yet, that he loved her, but she could feel that it was coming soon. Lucy knew she had to end it. Before he told her how he felt. She had to stop it before he felt any more for her. The guilt was tearing her apart knowing that they would never last. Her end was nearing. But she loved it. Mavis, how she loved him. She loved feeling so loved. And she never wanted it to end. Lucy sighed, stepped out of the shower, and wrapped her hair up in a towel and her body in another. Clearing her throat, she studied her reflection after wiping the fogged up mirror. Her chocolate brown eyes were slightly bloodshot, but she hoped another cup or two of coffee would clear it up. Under her bloodshot eyes were the bags that were getting harder to conceal with makeup. The tan that she had always somewhat prided herself on was faded, leaving her skin an almost sickly pale. In short, she looked awful. With a sigh, she skillfully applied her makeup, making sure to keep in natural looking. While she did enjoy a bolder look when she was going out or if there was a party, she preferred a more natural look. The blonde just didn't see the sense in applying darker, easier to notice if smudged, colors when her profession was something so physical. Clearing her throat once more, she slipped on a pair of black leggings along with a light blue baby-doll tee. As she pulled the towel from her damp hair, she started to feel winded. Like she had just finished sprinting a decent distance. Closing her eyes, she tried to even out her breathing, but the amount of air her lungs would take in was becoming less and less. At this point, the small blonde was wheezing, lungs burning in desperate need for more oxygen. She slid to the floor, hands grasping her shirt over her chest, when the tickle in the back of her throat became considerably worse. It was so uncomfortable, she couldn't help cough a little in a vain attempt to relieve the itch-like feeling. That was a mistake. As soon as she coughed, her lungs seized, not allowing her to take in the air she had just expelled. Violent, body wracking coughs came in forceful waves. She was vaguely aware of the tears streaming down her face as she hacked and sputtered on her bathroom floor. Just as little black dots began forming in her vision, the vice constricting her lungs loosened. Lucy sucked in air greedily, panting and sobbing as her breathing regulated itself. It was a while before she was able to haul herself up on shaky limbs. She stumbled down the hall to her room, where she collapsed into a sobbing heap on her bed. It was horrible. And it was only just starting. This would get worse from here on out, and just knowing that this wasn't even the worst of it made her sob even louder. She hadn't let herself cry over it yet, and she knew now that it was a mistake. Because now it was all rushing back to her, these months of avoiding her emotions, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. As her cries echoed through her little apartment, she knew that she had to pull herself together eventually. Laxus would come looking for her when he noticed she still hadn't arrived. Laxus. Rolling on to her side, she hugged her arms tightly around her waist. All she wanted, right in that moment, was to be held in his arms while she cried over all of the things she would never be. She had goals. A vague plot of how she wanted her life to go. She wanted to become an S-class. She wanted to kick ass in the next Grand Magic Games, and show Fiore that she was a lot stronger than she was the last time she had competed. She wanted to go on more adventures with her best friend. It was always more fun when she and Natsu were together. They were soul mates. Not the romantic kind, but the bond they shared was closer than siblings. He was her other half. What she lacked in her personality, he made up for it and vice versa. She wanted to someday find a man and marry him. Now that she was with Laxus, she could see him filling that role. She wanted to become a mother. She always had, and now she would never have that chance. Lucy would never experience bringing a life into the world that contained half of herself, and half of the man she loved. The Heartfilia name would end with her. And that terrified her more than she thought it would. }{}{}{ Dear mom, He's starting to get suspicious. It's been five months, and the breathing attacks are now coming daily. By some miracle, I've been able to hide them from everyone. Well, almost everyone. Natsu snuck in through my window last week when Laxus wasn't here. I was in the middle of scolding him for raiding my fridge again, when I felt an attack coming on. I tried to get him to leave before it got bad, but he wouldn't budge. Somehow, I managed to tell him not to go get Wendy and that I'd explain later. The look on his face, mom. I tear up every time I picture it. He was so scared, terrified, when I started wheezing. He brought me to the couch and sat with me, never letting go of my hand. But when the coughing started, oh Mavis. He looked… I don't even know how to put into words how he looked. Horror-stricken. Full of grief. I could tell he was feeling helpless, and angry with himself for not knowing how to help. He held me the whole time. He cried. My obnoxious, rambunctious, fearless Natsu cried. When it was over, he gently demanded answers. I couldn't tell him the truth. Seeing how he reacted to just the coughing made me realize that the truth would devastate him. So I told him it was just asthma. That I had it as a child, and I was having issues with it again, but that I was fine otherwise. He promised not to tell anyone, because I said I'd be embarrassed, but that if it got worse I had to tell him right away. Now, he's been watching me closely, and Laxus has noticed. I can tell that it angers him, but now he's been watching me too. I don't know how much longer I can hide this from everyone. Especially them. }{}{}{ It was unfortunately on a date with Laxus that Lucy experienced a new symptom, one that she was not expecting in the least, nor was she aware that it was even possible. It was nearing the six month mark, and her appetite was basically non-existent. She could only stomach small amounts of plain foods, maybe once or twice a day. Her body was noticeably thinner, and she often caught some of her nakama sending her concerned looks. Mostly from Mira, Levy, Erza, Natsu, and Laxus. Evergreen, who had become like a sister to her since her and Laxus became a couple, never asked any questions other than a rather blunt "Are you pregnant?" Lucy had blushed profusely, and gave her a truthful no. She never asked again, or asked what else was wrong, but the caring woman was constantly trying to find different foods for her in hopes that it would help. The blonde was grateful, because of her she found that she could keep down plain chicken and rice. It wasn't much, but it was filling enough so that she didn't feel as weak as she normally did. On a good day, she could add just a little bit of cheese, and that made her a lot happier than it should have. Natsu watched her like a hawk. An overprotective hawk that only allowed her out of his sight when Laxus was around. He never told anyone about her attacks, but you could tell that he wanted to. He'd broken down over her refusing to see a doctor or Wendy, refusing to let anyone know anything at all. He'd gotten angry with her. He knew she was hiding more than just "asthma" and he was pissed that she wouldn't tell him. He wouldn't let her join on missions. Instead, the little shit blackmailed her into letting him pay for her rent and groceries in return for his silence. Said that if she wasn't going to tell anyone the truth, the least she could do was let him help her in the only way he could. She was reluctant, but eventually agreed. It warmed her heart, even, seeing how much he cared for her. Not only that, but she had been trying for years to get him to pitch in on groceries, seeing that he ate most of it anyway. Lucy had finally put her big girl panties on and confronted her Spirits, only to find out that they already knew. They had sensed it through their bond. She had summoned them one by one, saying their goodbyes then. Just in case she lost the ability to summon them before she had the chance. The blonde discussed her plans to give their keys to Yukino, and they'd all agreed. The other Celestial mage loved her Spirits and treated them as well as Lucy did, so they would be going to good hands. The hardest goodbyes had been between Loke, Cancer, and Aquarius. While Cancer and Loke had been tearful, the mermaid had been furious. She had ranted and raved about how once again she was losing a Heartfilia to the same damn thing. She'd called her every name in the book, only to dissolve into a sobbing mess. Lucy stayed silent through the whole thing, knowing that the Spirit just needed to get it all out, and they'd held each other for as long as Lucy had been able to keep her gate open. Laxus… was more subtle in his worry. The look he often got in his stormy blue eyes told her that he knew she wasn't telling him something important. The brute of a man was gentle with her, only giving in to his more heated desires when she asked for it. He hardly went on any jobs, and when he did they were short and close by, as if he was afraid something might happen if he got too far away from her. He was constantly by her side, had even witnessed a few of her attacks. She knew that he and Natsu discussed it behind her back, but she couldn't bring herself to be annoyed by it. It only showed how much they cared. No. As much as she loved how gentile Laxus was being with her, she was also coming to hate it. Lucy didn't like to be treated like delicate, easily shattered glass. That's why she'd run away from her old life in the first place. Honestly, she just wanted the normalcy of how he used to treat her. Not to say he used to treat her roughly, but he was more himself back then. But she never voiced her annoyance. Not even once. Underneath all of the concern and knowingness, she could see the fear he was hiding in his eyes. The dangerous, insanely powerful mage who defeated one of the Ten Wizard Saints, was afraid. In all this time, she still hadn't been able to end it between them. It was selfish, and she hated herself for it, but she didn't want to lose him. Even though he would end up losing her. Even though she knew that ending it would help spare him in the end. What she wasn't expecting, was the depths of the feelings he had towards her. The feelings he made perfectly clear the same night that everything she'd been hiding was unwillingly forced into the light. They were having a picnic under the stars. The sky was clear and the moon was bright. Fireflies danced through the tall grass around them from where they sat together on a blanket, eating (what little she could) and laughing. "Lucy." He said in a serious tone, after they had caught their breath from laughing over swapping ridiculous stories about their team's antics. The Celestial mage wiped a tear of mirth from her eye, sobering at his sudden change in demeanor. "Yes, Laxus?" She grew concerned when he didn't respond right away, simply gazing at her for a few moments. The much larger blonde closed his eyes, ran a hand through his hair, and took a deep breath before facing her again. She was slightly taken aback by the sheer determination in his stormy blue gaze. Growing a bit nervous, she fiddled with the hem of her pale pink blouse while she waited for him to speak. "Lucy." He started, voice firm and a bit louder than before. "I know we've only been dating for a little while, but I can't help what I feel or when I feel it." His eyes never left hers, and she was sure he could hear how her heart started racing in her chest. "You are…" He trailed off, a small smile curving his lips. "You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I have never once been as happy as I have in the time we've been together. You make colors seem a bit brighter. You make laughter come a bit easier. You showed me it was possible to love someone more than anything else in this world. I can't picture a day without you in it. A future without you by my side." Laxus shifted so that he was on one knee in front of her sitting form, revealing a small velvet box he'd taken from his front pocket. He opened the box, and her heart faltered for a moment before racing even faster than it had been. A ring was nestled in pale blue silk. The band was silver, adorned with tiny round diamonds that framed a larger round diamond in the center. It was beautiful. Simple and pretty, and it glittered under the moonlight. "So, what I'm asking you is this. Will you, Lucy Heartfilia, do me the honor of becoming my wife?" An overwhelming urge to cry the word "yes" over and over flooded her entire being. She wanted nothing more to except his proposal, because she felt the same about him. But then, the voice of reality slithered in, shattering her heart in one swift blow. Emotions from each end of the spectrum waged a war in her heart, and for the first time since she'd gotten this disease, she wished it would have killed her right at the beginning. Because if she could have just died right away, before she'd thoughtlessly agreed to date him, before they'd fallen hopelessly in love, before all of this, she could've spared him. His life wouldn't have had to change at all. He could have gone on and found another, a healthy woman who made him even happier than she did, and married her. He wouldn't have had to get hurt. She knew she must have taken too long to respond, because the hopeful smile on his face fell. Just as he closed the box and was about to slip in back into his pocket, her hand darted out to rest over his. "Laxus, wait." Her voice was soft. It trembled as tears of hopelessness and guilt slid down her cheeks. "What?" His voice was husky and deep, thick with emotion he was desperately trying to hide. "There is nothing I want more in this world than to marry you." His watery gaze met hers, and her heart broke a little more. He looked so dejected and hurt. She hated it. She had done this. "But…" His voice trailed off, so quiet it was almost a whisper. "But I can't." Her small hand tightened around his large one. "I can't marry anyone. I shouldn't have even let this go on for so long. I-" His hand ripped away from hers so hard, she almost fell flat on her face. Her head spun from the sudden movement, and her eyes shut only long enough to force the feeling back enough to keep upright. Her eyes snapped back open as his angry voice resounded through the secluded area. "You what?! What is that supposed to mean?" Stormy blue eyes narrowed with the anger that was rolling off of him in almost palpable waves. "Are you saying that all this time, you've just been 'letting this go on'? Leading me on? Because it sounds to me like you're saying you've only been playing along." Lucy sat there wide eyed, gazing at the seething Dragon Slayer that was glaring at her with so much rage. So much betrayal. Her vision started getting hazy, and there was this pressure that was slowly building up in her head, but she pushed through it. She was desperate to get through to him. "N-no! That's not it at all. Let me ex-" "I don't want to hear it, Blondie." He spat the word with so much venom it made her flinch. He never called her that anymore. Not since before he told her he loved her for the first time. "It doesn't even matter anymore, because we're done." Just like that, he was turning away, leaving her. He was leaving her. Panic gripped her heart and she surged to her feet to scramble after him. "Laxus, wait!" She begged, her desperation choking her words. "Please!" He was walking too fast and her vision was only getting worse. She couldn't see him anymore, other than the moon reflecting off of his bright blonde locks, and the pressure in her head was becoming almost unbearable. But she couldn't even focus on that because she just couldn't let him leave. A sob ripped from her throat, and she thought she saw his stride falter. Her pace sped up, desperate to get to him before he thought to lightning travel away. In a second, faster than she could even register fully, it felt as though the pressure burst, and her body jerked once before dropping to the ground. She tried to move, she really did, but her limbs refused to respond to her mental command. Even her mouth wouldn't so much as twitch. The small blonde had no idea what was going on, but she wasn't given even a second to ponder it. Her vision went completely dark, and then came one of the worst experiences she has ever had. Every muscle went completely rigid, before her entire body began convulsing violently. She was vaguely aware of what was happening outside of what was going on. She could still hear the crickets chirping, though they were muffled. As though there was cotton stuffed into her ears. Lucy wanted to scream, she wanted to cry, but she only managed to choke out whimpers and whines through her painfully clenched jaw. Through the chaos raging inside of her body, she thought she heard a shout of her name, before unconsciousness claimed her. }{}{}{ The first things that Lucy registered were a continuous beeping noise, and warm pressure on one of her hands. It took her longer than she liked, but she was eventually able to crack her eyes open. Blinking blearily at the plain white walls, she tried to place her surroundings. All at once, the memories of before she passed out flooded her mind, and her heart caught in her throat. The beeping noise sped up in pace with her racing thoughts, until it hit her that it was a heart-rate monitor and that this was the guild's infirmary. A new fear gripped her heart with its icy fingers and squeezed. If she was here, then the guild knew. Because they would have called Wendy and one scan using her magic would tell her the truth. She couldn't hide it anymore. Everyone would know. Nothing would be normal anymore, and that's all she really wanted. For everyone to be exactly how they always were. They would be sad. All because of her, her nakama would be sad. One thing she couldn't figure out was how she got to the guild in the first place. She was fairly certain that Laxus had been long gone when it all happened, so who found her and brought her here? Probably Natsu. A masculine grunt snapped her gaze to the right side of the cot she was laying in, only to gape in confusion at what she found. Laxus was slouched in a chair he was way too large for. The top half of his body was resting on her cot, his large hand clutching hers in his sleep. His face looked haggard and pale, his hair disheveled, and the same clothes he had been wearing on their date were wrinkled and frumpy. It looked as though he had been there for a long time, and before she could really think about it, he grunted once more and slowly sat up. His free hand rose to rub at his face, and his eyes opened blearily. Chocolate met stormy blue, and as she opened her mouth to question his appearance, she was cut off by a fierce glare. "Why didn't you tell me?" He growled. Her voice caught in her throat. "How could you keep this from me? From the guild?" She looked away in shame, tears streaming down her cheeks, and she tried to pull her hand out of his grasp. But he wouldn't let go. Instead, his grip tightened and she looked at him in surprise, only to be completely caught off guard to find tears of his own slipping silently down his face. It was then that she noticed how red and puffy his eyes were, as if he had been crying before now. "How could you keep this from me, Lucy?" His voice was thick from his tears, cracking at her name, and he sounded so much like a broken child in that moment that her heart shattered all over again. "I-I'm so s-sorry." She managed to force out. He shook his head rapidly, pulling himself into her little cot and wrapping his large body around her, holding her tightly to him. "No. I'm s-sorry. I should have n-noticed. I knew something was wrong, b-but I never questioned you. I sh-should have done something more. I'm sorr-" "No, Laxus." She started, reigning in her emotions as best as she could and winding her arms around his neck. "There was no way for you to know. I'm the one who kept it to myself. I'm the one who dated you anyway, even though I knew I would d-die soon. I should be the one apologizing to you." His nose was buried in her hair, and he was quiet for a moment before speaking in a whisper. "My proposal still stands, you know. I still want to marry you." Lucy froze. "L-Laxus, no. I can't do that to you. I won't marry you, just to leave you shortly after." His grip around her tightened, and his voice was filled with so much conviction that it left her in awe. "I would rather be married to you for even only a day, than to live the rest of my life never having you as my wife at all." She laid there in his arms, completely stunned, so he continued. "The old hag is here. She… she said that you have a m-month. Maybe two at most. Said that the… seizures, and the fact that your magic is depleting, even though you're not using it, will sp-speed up the process." Lucy had already figured she didn't have much time. A month or two was actually more than she thought she would get. "She just told me and Gramps last night, but Gramps announced it this morning." THAT snapped her out of it. "He what?!" "Relax, Lucy. He thought it was passed due for our nakama to know." Reluctantly, she agreed. They all deserved the truth. "So, will you marry me?" He whispered in her ear. The small blonde took a shuddering breath and clung to him tighter. "Yes." }{}{}{ Leave it to Mira to throw together an unbelievably elegant and beautiful wedding in two days. It was planned early the next morning, and Lucy was so nervous/happy/excited that she could hardly breathe. Not only that, but she had a very important question to ask a certain pink-haired moron, and she hadn't seen him since the day everyone found out. Everyone reassured her that he just needed a little space to wrap his head around it all. But she missed him. Especially right now, the night before her wedding, when she was all alone because Mira and Erza both forbade the bride and groom from seeing each other until the ceremony. Neither of the women were to ever be crossed, but put them together? Yeah, she wasn't that stupid. She actually wanted these two months. Laying in her bed, Lucy was thankful to be home. She was finally allowed to leave the infirmary under strict instruction to rest. She'd only had one more seizure since the first one. During the day she was never really alone. Erza, Levy, Gray, Cana, or Laxus normally kept her company, Laxus remaining overnight. But tonight she was alone. With a heavy sigh, Lucy closed her eyes, willing sleep to take her. Just as she was starting to relax, the sound of her bedroom window sliding open had her sitting up in a flash. And there he stood. Pink hair shielded his eyes as he took a seat at the edge of her bed. Neither of them said anything for the longest time, when suddenly he sniffled and then launched himself at her. He lay partially on top of her, his face buried in the crook of her neck, and with a sad smile she rubbed his trembling shoulders. No words were said. They just held each other. This was the boy who brought her to her family. Because of him she had a home. Because of him, she met the man she was meeting at the end of the aisle the very next day. Natsu was so incredibly important to her. So she had to ask him. "Will you do something for me?" She whispered. The pinkette sniffed. "Anything." "Would you walk me down the aisle tomorrow?" His body stiffened for only a moment, before he was nodding frantically into her neck and she giggled. "Of course, Luce." }{}{}{ The following morning, Lucy couldn't stand on her own. Natsu helped her to the bathroom, even helping her bathe by setting her in the tub and washing her hair. She'd woken up a lot earlier that she'd planned, and the girls weren't getting there for another hour. The Fire Dragon Slayer helped her out of the tub, held her steady so she could fasten her robe, and even went as far as making her some lightly buttered toast. With how close they were, and how many times her idiot partner broke in unannounced, he had seen her naked plenty of times. She was a little embarrassed that he had helped her do all of that, but he wouldn't have it. "Whether you walk or I carry you down the damn aisle, you're getting married today no matter what. Quit being such a weirdo and let me get you out of the tub!" He'd said when she refused to let him help her any more than he had already. Finally Erza, Levy, Cana, and Mira arrived. Natsu took that as his cue to leave, and said he needed to find a tux anyway. They'd brought makeup, hair products, nail polish, and her dress. But it was Cana who went above and beyond. She'd shown up a bit later than the others – with a wheelchair of all things. "Saw that you might need this." The Card mage said as she wheeled it into the apartment. "Don't ask how or why I even have one of these, 'kay?" Her best friends dolled her up. Curling her golden tresses into ringlets, before pining it into a beautiful half updo. Cana hid the bags under her eyes like a professional, stating she had to know how because most days where spent with a raging hangover. She was given a light smoky-eye look that made her brown eyes and petal pink lips pop. The dress she was wearing wasn't a traditional wedding dress. She had opted for a beautiful white sundress, with cap-sleeves made completely of lace. It was simple, showed off her curves, and now that she knew she would be in a wheelchair she was very thankful it ended just below her knees. On her throat hung one of her mother's necklaces. The silver chain held a little pendent, a tiny diamond crescent moon, which went well with the diamond studs in her ears. Her bridesmaids, everyone currently in her apartment, all wore pale pink sundresses that were similar to her own. The only difference, besides the color, were that their dresses were sleeveless and held no lace. Over-all, Lucy felt beautiful. And she was ready. }{}{}{ The moment her music started, Natsu began wheeling her down the aisle. In all of the stories she'd read about weddings, the bride and groom always only had eyes for each other and the rest of the world faded away. They were wrong, at least at first. The first thing she actually noticed were all of her Spirits sitting in the fold up chairs up at the very front. Somehow they were all there, even though she couldn't summon them anymore. The petite blonde fought back tears, especially when she caught sight of the usually cross mermaid dabbing tears from her eyes. "Oi, don't do that. You'll cry off your face, Luigi." Her partner said, rather loudly, in her ear. She blindly swatted at him, giggling as their nakama broke out in chuckles around them. But then she saw him. Laxus was standing at the alter with the master, who was officiating the ceremony, eyes filled with complete adoration. He was wearing a crisp black suit and pale pink tie. The world around her fell away, and she was vaguely aware of Natsu kissing her cheek before locking the wheels of her chair and taking his seat. The small blonde desperately wanted to stand, and he must have seen it in her eyes, because he knelt down before her. Taking her small hands in his, he leaned closer. "You are so beautiful." The ceremony flew by in a blur of happy tears. When they finally kissed as man and wife, he scooped her up from her chair, carrying her back down the aisle as their family tossed impossible amounts of rice at them. Fairy Tail being Fairy Tail, the reception was filled with drinking and dancing, cheering and brawling. And, by Erza's demand, lots and lots of cake. It was decided that they would forgo a honeymoon, instead spending as much time with their nakama as she could. The perfect day ended with a perfect night, wrapped in her new husband's arms. He wouldn't stop calling her Mrs. Dreyar, and she couldn't stop smiling. Even when her cheeks started to hurt and sleep claimed her, she never stopped smiling. }{}{}{ It was merely three weeks later, three weeks filled to the brim with happiness, that she passed. Her husband laid with her, holding her tightly to him, Natsu clutching her hand to his cheek, and the rest of her family surrounding her. And she wouldn't have had it any other way. ___ Writing this killed me. Not only would it never freaking end (seriously, it basically gained a life of its own), it was just heartbreaking to write. I'm a sucker for happy endings, but with how I laid this out it was just not an option. Of course, after writing such a sad prompt, the next day is Tears. But I'm just not going to make it sad. Nope. Can't do it. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you all tomorrow!
