ages of Descendants characters

at the time of D3 they'd be roughly...

Mal: 18-19

the Smee twins: 12

it's stated in Descendants 2 that Mal was 16 in Descendants (2015). what with them seeming quite young in Wicked World, all of the events that occur and time that passes in each novel, and them being moderately functioning adults in Descendants 3, the idea that they spend a good 3-4 years in Auradon makes a lot of sense.

it also has interesting connotations.

Carlos de Vil was only 14 or 15 in the first movie. this makes sense from his portrayal in the movie and isn't much of a difference from the others' being 16 - in Auradon. consider the dynamics on the Isle of the Lost, though: in the gang scene, he was probably the youngest major player of all the villain kids.

we know that there are six months between Descendants (2015) and Descendants 2. in this time, Uma and Harry win the Lost Revenge, build their crew and reputation, and secure all of Mal's old territory. that isn't a lot of time for the new normal on the Isle of the Lost to be solidified. Uma and Harry are still riding the waves of their sudden ascension to being major players on the Isle, which adds credibility to Gil's scenes in the movie and their astounding confidence in just. impulsively ransoming the fucken King of Auradon.

this timeline also means that there are 2-3 YEARS between Descendants 2 and Descendants 3. this makes the animosity between Uma and Mal over her crew's abandonment of the Isle - and Uma's character development into such firm determination to be a savior for the Isle kids - all the more reasonable.

so for 2 or 3 years, Mal and Ben are finishing school, settling into their relationship, and Mal is being prepped to be Queen; Jay, Evie, and Carlos are navigating school, friendships, and creating new roles for themselves outside of the Isle; Uma is roaming free outside the barrier, investigating the world but unable to do anything to help her crew back on the Isle; Harry and Gil are trapped on the Isle with no updates from Uma or news of Auradon, stepping in to adapt to the loss of the leader of their relatively newly-established crew; and all of the other VKs are left to rot without any follow up on the exchange program.

according the the novels Mal, Jay, and Evie graduate shortly before Descendants 3, which helps make sense for why - and why then - they were entrusted with selecting the next group of VKs to bring over. it makes more sense for them to suddenly be permitted to visit the Isle of the Lost to spread propaganda, applications, and mentor the kids when they couldn't before. Auradon brought one batch of VKs all the way into adulthood and now that they are proving to be promisingly responsible citizens, they're finally moving to bring over some more.

Mal, Jay, Evie, Ben, Audrey, and the others being in that painful post-graduation transitional period of life also makes a lot of sense for their actions in Descendants 3. they're no longer in high school and are suddenly confronted with deciding who they want to be and what they want to do with their lives. we see Jay settle into mentoring the new VKs very comfortably, seeming more comfortable in his own skin than he had been before; Evie is masterfully managing a home, business, and boyfriend; it's a logical time for Audrey to snap, when she'd managed to hold herself together previously; and it adds to the pressure Mal and Ben were under that inspired them to agree with closing the barrier.

canon pieces imply that it was days between the final battle of Descendants 3 and Hades' waking Audrey and that the barrier was lowered immediately after this takes place. this means that Ben and Mal immediately moved for dropping the barrier after Hades' speech, all of the Council supported them now in doing so (????), and there were no practical or legislative roadblocks to completing the action. very little time passed for Uma and Harry to wrangle people on the Isle; Audrey was released back into public favor at the celebration literally immediately; and there wasn't time for many conversations or relational resolution among the Core Four.

canon is stupid and I'm especially horrified by the lack of logic in that last part... but the more I consider these characters according to this timeline, the more I like it.

"The Descendants movies have novels that fill in the gaps between them by Melissa de La Cruz. It's confirmed that they are canon as the author collaborates with Disney on the content.

"In the fourth novel (Escape from the Isle of the Lost), set before D3, Mal, Ben, Evie, Doug, and Jay graduate. D3 opens either months or a year after that, so we can assume they're 19 or 20. Still young, but legally able to marry. Carlos and Jane are seniors, so 18 by that point. The younger characters are all over 11, but younger than 15; as Auradon Prep only accepts boarders from 11 and up."

I've seen people talk about Uma, Harry, and Gil all being the same age, and of Harry being the same age as Mal, so I assume the pirates would also be 18-20.

Descendants Headcanons/Wickedverse Guide

Some of these aren't so much "headcanons" as things I'm using in my post-canon universe, named the Wickedverse. Me and my sister share this universe, so she has a lot of influence with some of these. Will get updated as I add/change ideas.

Lore

Centuries before Auradon was formed, there was a great war between the kingdoms. After years of fighting, they made an agreement on territory and everyone closed their borders. This lead to kingdoms/cities to develop at different rates, due to different resources. Many years later, all the fairytales/stories happen over the course of seven years or so. Then, Auradon is formed.

The formation of Auradon (and the Isle) created the Age of Goodness (AOG). Upon it's creation, was year 1.

Since Descendants takes place twenty years after the AOG, it is year twenty

The first Isle book takes place in the July before Descendants. Descendants occurs in September-October (as Ben's birthday is in October), and Wicked World happens in November. The second and third Isle books take place in January of year 21. Since D2 takes place six months after D1 it occurs in March of 21. The fourth Isle book takes place in May of 22. D3, taking place after the older have graduated, occurs in June of year 22.

Some other Disney properties are included that aren't specifically mention in canon: Frozen, Frozen II, Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure (TV series), Encanto, Big Hero 6, Raya, and definitely more.

Mal and Ben's wedding is on the 13th of April, almost a year after D3.

Sometime after D3, the Isle of the Lost is renamed the Isle of the Found.

Family

Uma and Freddie are twin sisters, having been separated after Dr. Facilier and Ursula broke up. Freddie and Uma were unaware of this, and found out in the events of Never Knew I Lost You (coming soon).

In addition, Celia has a different mother, an OC named Lauren.

This is also why Facilier seemed to dislike Freddie (though, her abuse portrayed in the Wickedverse is probably worse than it is in canon), as he dislikes her mother. Whereas he favored Celia, since he likes her mother. Also why Ursula didn't care much about Uma, having become despondent after losing her partner and daughter.

King Philip has three sisters, Brigitte, Bianca, and Marya, taken from the book A Twisted Tale: Once Upon a Dream by Liz Braswell. Bianca is Ariana's mother and Marya has a daughter named Naomi.

Lumiere is married to Fairy Godmother, and is Jane's father.

Evie and Dizzy have the same father, Hans, making them half-sisters.

Doug's mother, named Clarita in this universe, is from Encanto. Agustin is her maternal uncle, making him Doug's great uncle.

Jay's mother was a woman from Agrabah named Lulu. She dealt in some shady business, thus why she was sent to the Isle. She died from an illness when Jay was five.

The sea witches mentioned in the first Isle book are Morgana's daughter, and Uma's cousins, instead of sisters.

Hadie's mother is an OC named Lian Teng. She is the sister of one of the Huns that survived the avalanche. He was all she had, so she followed him to the Isle. She worked in Hades's Souvlaki and her and Hades had a brief relationship a while after his break up with Maleficent. Hadie is three years younger than Mal.

Harriet, Harry, and CJ's mother is a woman named Red Jessica from Jake and the Neverland Pirates TV series. However, she is only the same character; her role and relationship with Hook is different in the Wickedverse than the cartoon.

Carlos's father is Bruno Madrigal from Encanto (inspired by @silverloreley 's headcanon and discussions). Bruno had a bad vision about Cruella and went to warn her about it. They had an unexpected connection, and one thing led to another.

Melody (from the Little Mermaid sequel) and Zephyr (from the Hunchback of Notre Dame sequel) are married and have a (currently unamed) child.

Friendships

Prior to the events of Wicked World, and possibly D1, Jordan and Ally become best friends after Jordan helps Ally out of a bad relationship.

Jane and Freddie become best friends during the events of Wicked World.

Likewise, Uma and Audrey become best friends sometime after the events of Descendants 3.

Because of the discovery of Uma and Freddie being twins, they start spending time together. To not leave Jane and Audrey out, the four of them hang out together often, forming a friend group similar to the Core Four.

A few months before the Bal wedding, Lonnie and CJ meet and become best friends.

Characters

As a reason for why Carlos was not at Mal and Ben's wedding (and why the rest of the Core Four were sad about it), he develops COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and goes into a coma a couple weeks before the wedding. He wakes up a few weeks afterwards.

Some last name headcanons:

Dwarf last names are from gems and the Seven Dwarves' last name is Lazuli, from lapis lazuli. This makes Doug's full name Doug Lazuli.

Maleficent and Mal's last name is Dragonheart, making Mal's full name Maleficent "Mal" Bertha Dragonheart.

Ben's last name is Leroi, meaning "the king" in French (taken from @hitchell-mope)

Evie's last name is Grimhilde, mostly taken from the fandom.

Jane's last name is Faery, and Fairy Godmother's real name is Joan.

Audrey gives up her birthright to rule Auroria, deciding that isn't the path for her. Naomi will rule Auroria instead. (Which was also what they were planning to do when they thought Audrey would be queen of Auradon).

Uma becomes leader of the Isle after D3, with Harry, Gil, and her crew acting as her advisors/council/soldiers.

OCs

Varian and Cassandra (from the Tangles series) are married and have two kids, Caelan and Valeria.

Anna and Kristoff are married and two sons, Alaric and Kade.

Raya has a son named River.

Maleficent has a younger brother named Kaveh, who comes to Auradon a few years after D3 to help stop a new threat. He previously lived in the Moorlands, the ancestral home of dark fairies and Maleficent's homeland.

Ally has a (currently unnamed) older brother.

Snow White and Prince Florian have a (currently unnamed) child.

Scar (who was turned into a human before being put on the Isle) has a daughter named Safiya.

Mirabel is married to a man named Rico and they have two kids, Anabel and Matteo. Others from Encanto also have kids, but most are currently unnamed.

I feel like Lonnie is pretty much the most forgotten descendants kid in the franchise. What do you think?

Idk, I want to say Doug is, but he is in a canonical relationship and gets used as a prop in a whole love song (plus he appears in all three movies), so I guess you're probably right. Lonnie ends with one hobby, no particularly defined relationships (platonic or romantic; I'm talking just the movies), and not much going on. It is nice that we're to assume she's happy with whatever she's doing, since everything seemed to be working out for her last time we saw her, but that's about it.

I guess I'm hesitating because I can see Lonnie being a character one would write fanfiction about, and (no offense to Doug) I don't see as much of that for him. He's smart, but that kind of just comes into play in terms of encouraging Evie in science class in the first movie; he was never the one solving problems with his intellect or anything. When I think of the smart guy character in Descendants, I think of Carlos, because his intelligence got used often. Doug is fine. He has utility as a character. But Lonnie is more fun, and I think that matters.

Lonnie’s older brother teaching her tourney and R.O.A.R., practicing sword fighting with her, showing her around Auradon Prep when she first came; Doug’s older brother Derek playing ball with him; Chad and Chloe doing....I don’t know, royal things together.

Sibling relationships on the Isle:

Harry and CJ Hook rolling around on the pier wrestling, nearly dragging each other off the edge, while Harriet walks by with barely a second glance; Freddie and Celia Facilier tag-teaming fleecing people out of their money.

oh so i was watching descendants the other day because that’s a hyperfixation that’s currently resurfacing for me, and i noticed that in the scene where mal gives ben the love potion cookie and the other VKs are all there off to the side watching and checking on ben’s reaction, doug???? is also there????? the entire time????? he was just. witness to that whole thing. and then he was the one to start off the band for did i mention, and then he was the one to advocate for evie to be allowed to take her test even though he clearly knew she had been cheating???? and all of this has made me, truly, adore doug like. was this dude just. aware of everything the whole time?? and just went “whelp that’s none of my business, i just like spending time with evie, her extracurriculars are her own” because that’s HYSTERICAL

What we know about Doug;

He is a musician-- and a very talented one according to Jane.

He can play the acoustic gutiar and the trumpet.

He is the child of Dopey and an unknown woman is presumably human.

He has one sibling named Derek who is older than him.

He has 6 uncles-- Sneezy, Sleepy, Bashful, Doc, Grumpy, and Happy.

And 10 known cousins-- Bashful Jr, Sleepy Jr, Gordon, Doc ||, Hap, Cheerful, Crabby, Shy, Gus, and Snoozy respectfully.

Doug is/was a student at Auardon Prep.

He is Evie's boyfriend and true love.

Doug is an accountant for Evie's 4 Hearts and a member of the marching band.

He also helps Evie with dress deliveries.

He is also apart of practically every club in school, in his own words. So not as boring as some people thought.

His eyes are green, he wears glasses, and his hair is brown.

He is quirky and very clumsy.

He's been on at least one date before Evie came to Auardon. It didn't end well because he's clumsy, it led to a fire and a broken arm.

He felt extremely bad about it and it definitely explains his nervous/insecure nature.

His allies are listed as Ben, Evie, Mal, Jay, Carlos, Chad, Audrey, Lonnie, Jane, Uma, Gil, and Harry in that order.

His only listed enemy is Maleficent.

We do not know the name of any of his aunts or his mother.

He refers to Snow White as his aunt.

Doug has been enchanted by Evie ever since he first saw her.

He went out of his way to help Evie when Mr Deley was threatening to have her expelled. Which would be nerve wracking for someone like him.

He can be easily manipulated at times and can also jump to conclusions.

He was one of the few people supportive of Ben's proclamation.

He has trouble remembering names.

He was possibly one of the first people to show Evie that she didn't need to rely on a prince to get her happy ending.

He is never shown to be jealous of Evie's friendship with Carlos and Jay.

Since he's friends with Ben (who has drums) it is very possible he knows how to play the drums as well. Maybe they even dreamed of starting a band together as kids.

He uses the phrase "Heigh ho" which he could have picked up from his dad and uncles while working in the mines.

Which he does during the summer, btw.

So he definitely knows how to wield a pickaxe (called it).

His worst fear is getting an -A minus as a grade, showing school is very important to him.

His dream is to play the trumpet for the Dragon Slayers.

His favorite class is chemistry since it's like magic, impling that he isn't as biased towards magic as others are.

He had trouble remembering Sneezy's name when he first net the vks and is socially awkward.

His secret wish is to be a rock star and his not so secret wish is to spend more time with Evie.

He's honest, since he admitted that he had followed Evie to the bleachers. Which he did to warn her about Chad.

Who he probably learned about from the school of secrets web series. Where someone (definitely Lonnie) exposed that Chad had a lot of girls numbers in his phone. Who he was most likely playing like he ended up doing Evie.

Evie calls him the prince of her heart.

His main color is green, which symbolizes intelligence. It is also implied that it is one of his favorite Colors.

He might know a little Spanish since he is shown singing it in 'Did I mention?'

He works in the mines with his dad, uncles, and cousins sometimes during the summer and enjoys it.

He likes rock candy.

It is canon that he wrote Evie a 'check yes or no' note.

At least one of his relatives is in the sidekicks club/union.

“So you guys have a lot of magic here?” Mal asked as you guys entered the dorm areas of the school.

“I mean it exists, but it’s pretty much retired. Most of us here are ordinary mortals,” Ben answered.

“Yeah, ordinary mortals that happen to be kings and queens.”

“That’s true.” Audrey put Ben’s arm around her shoulders. “Our royal bloodlines go back hundreds of years.”

“Wow, really?” you asked.

Both Ben and Audrey nodded, clearly not hearing the sarcasm. The VKs smiled knowing you weren’t genuine at all.

“Hundreds, huh? Call me back when you hit the thousands.” You would’ve stopped there but the look on Audrey’s face was too good to drop it.

“Carlos? How old is Wonderland now?”

“It’s entering its third millennium in a few years so currently 2,992.”

You could always count on Carlos to be a smart-ass and have the exact answer you needed.

“And the Valley of Hearts was founded when in Wonderland?”

“Approximately two thousand nine hundred years ago. Give or take twenty years depending on if you count its Warring States period.”

“And the Royal Family? The Hearts…”

“Never been usurped once. Only family to maintain rule within a single family.”

“Wow. So two thousand years runs through my veins. I mean, hundreds is cute though… so the dorms would be?”

“That way.” One of the marching band boys said from where he was coming down the stairs.

“I’m Doug, Dopey’s son. I’m taking the tour over from Ben and Audrey.”

“Oh, be careful Doug. It’s Prince and Princess Ben and Audrey. We wouldn’t want to offend their royal blood.”

Ben gave a sarcastic laugh, “okay, okay we get it.”

“A bit much?”

“Just a bit. We’ll see you guys around.” Ben and Audrey walked off.

Doug was very nice as he led you guys through the dorm area explaining the common areas, snack bar and kitchens, the public bathrooms in case you can’t stop all the way to your room. Finally, you arrived at your dorms.

“Everyone chooses singles or doubles. We thought it would be best if you guys had people in your rooms, so you didn’t get too lonely in Auradon. We’ll be happy to give you singles next semester or next year. Jay and Carlos are together. Evie and Mal are roommates.” Doug handed them the keys.

“Unfortunately, there are three girls and we only do doubles so we couldn’t get you all to room together. But one of the Auradon girls did offer to room with you, (Y/N).”

Doug pointed to the door right across from Mal and Evie’s room. He handed you the key before continuing on. He gave out schedules. You guys had the weekend to relax before starting classes on Monday, including Goodness 101 with Fairy Godmother.

You gave a small wave to the other VKs before entering your room to figure out your mystery roommate. The dorms at Auradon were actually perfect, at least according to you. Mal was probably internally screaming across the way with all the cleanliness. It was so light and airy, so pretty.

“I know. I had the same reaction the first time I saw the dorms. Huge aren’t they?”

“Yeah, huge,” you said absentmindedly.

The girl jumped off her bed, setting down the sharpie she was drawing on her skin with. “Nice to meet you. Moetini, Maui’s daughter.”

“Maui? The demi-god? I’m roommates with a demi-god?”

“Eh, quarter-god.”

“Still pretty cool. (Y/N) Heart.” You shook her hand. “Love the drawings.”

“Yeah? I’m testing out tattoos. Not sure what to do first.”

“I like that one.”

You pointed to intricate sun design on the back of her hand. Like father, like daughter. No surprise to you that Moetini would want tattoos like her dad.

“Really? Wicked. Guess it’ll be my first one.”

“Will it move?”

“If I get my dad to do it, probably… do you have any stuff with you?” Moetini looked behind you but saw nothing.

“Uh, they said it would be in the room, but… it looks like my luggage got lost.”

Moetini frowned. “Looks like we’ll have to go get Ben.”

She grabbed your hand and marched out the door. At first when Doug said that an Auradon girl volunteered to share a room with you, you didn’t think it would end well. But Moetini was pretty chill and you were actually kind of happy she volunteered. You followed all the way to what you assumed was Ben’s door. Moetini knocked in such an odd fashion, making a song out of it until Ben opened the door.

“Moetini, what do you want?” You could hear Ben on the other side of the door before he even opened it.

“How’d you know it was me?”

“Who else would knock like that. (Y/N)?”

Ben noticed you behind Moetini. “Don’t tell me there’s a problem already. You volunteered, Moetini.”

“Oh, no. We get along great, don’t we? (Y/N)’s luggage is missing.”

Ben scratched the back of his head. “Oh. Well, there was nothing important in there, right?”

“No. Lucky for me I put my crown on. Just clothes and snacks,” you said.

You were glad you kept the picture of you and your parents in your pocket. It was a bad picture, from a broken camera, but you loved it nonetheless.

“Okay. Then in that case…” Ben went into his room before popping back up with his wallet. “I don’t think we’re going to find the luggage, especially since all the others have theirs so just take my card. We’ll consider this part of the program budget.”

“Sweet! Diamond, wow, never held one before. Dad’s only up to the black card.” Moetini admired Ben’s credit card. “This is going to be fun, (Y/N)!”

“Um, no. I’m a villain kid. They’re going to think I stole your card. I’m not trying to get sent back to the Isle on my first day, I’ll just have to figure something out. Probably Evie, you’d be surprised what that girl can do with a bedsheet.”

“We’re not letting you walk around in bed sheets. I’ll just come with you guys, I guess.”

“Are you sure? Shopping up your alley?”

“Not really,” Ben said grabbing a jacket and closing his room door.

“But you need stuff and like you said, we’re not trying to get you sent back to Isle on your first day… just how long do you two think this is going to take? Please say nothing over two hours.”

Ben shuddered, thinking of all the shopping Audrey had dragged him along to. You and Moetini just looked at each other.

“Moetini, how many shops are in Auradon’s mall?”

“Just under 200. A few of them are food stalls, though.”

“Ooh, shopping and snacks… sorry Prince Ben, you might be used to this but I’ve never seen a mall before. I’m about to go wild, especially with this.” You grabbed his credit card out of Moetini’s hand, waving it around and smiling.

“This might’ve been a mistake.”

“Too late now, Benjamin!” Moetini laughed as she dragged the two of you along towards the mall.

You were in your eleventh store. Skin care, handled. Now you were on to shoes and clothes and then you’d head for makeup and accessories. You lost Ben somewhere back in the sixth store so now it was just you and Moetini.

“Look at these shoes!” You were admiring a nice pair of heels.

“Hey, Heart. These ones have hearts on them.”

“Is that too much? Would I be like, too extra for going with the heart and roses motif?”

“Too extra? You’re asking me if something’s too extra?” Moetini held up her arm covered in sharpie drawings, that looked like a real tattoo sleeve.

You looked at the shoes before grabbing them. “If they go with an outfit, then I’ll get them.”

Moetini clapped her hands and you two walked towards the dressing rooms. You were going from the changing room to the little sitting area where Moetini rested back and forth. It was a mini fashion show, occasionally even the store clerks would chime when they thought something looked exceptionally good. You were taking a mini break just to try on shoes when Ben came back with three pretzels and some lemonade.

“Do you girls never get tired of shopping?”

“Shopping like this?! I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it. You sure I can get this stuff?” You stood up and walked around in the heels you just strapped up, testing them.

“Yeah, don’t worry about it. You needed to replace your luggage.”

You were having fun but you probably wouldn’t buy everything you liked, or you would at least work to pay Ben off for some of it. You went to sit back down and take off the shoes, they weren’t as nice as the heart ones Moetini pointed out. Ben handed you your pretzel and lemonade.

“Thanks, Prince Ben.”

“You don’t have to call me that.”

“Some people made it clear that titles were important.”

“Yeah sure they are; but, everyone at school calls me Ben. You go to school right?”

“Okay. Thanks, Ben.”

“No problem. So, does you sitting down mean we can leave?”

“Ha. No. We’re just taking a snack break.”

You were back in the dressing room, trying on your last outfit in one of the last stores. The zipper was hard to reach in the back. Normally, you’d have no problem unzipping it but Auradon liked to coat their zippers in something shiny. That also made them a bit slippery and you couldn’t get a proper grip on it.

“Moetini?! Moetini?!” You yelled for the girl but no one responded.

“Do you need something?” Ben asked from the other side of your dressing room door.

“Where’s Moetini?”

“Bathroom, why?”

“I’m stuck…” you muttered.

“I’m sorry, what?”

“I’m stuck in this dress! I can’t get the zipper.” You flung open the door, to show Ben the zipper that was in the one spot your hand couldn’t reach. “See, it’s too slippery to get. I need her to undo it.”

“Oh, I can help you with that.” Ben unzipped it halfway to a point you could reach but without exposing anything as to protect your modesty.

“Umm, thank you.” You closed the door with one hand, careful not to let the dress fall, so you could change.
