Here's the plot (wikipedia):
Five years after going their separate ways, close friends Harold and AM unexpectedly reunite after arriving late at the wedding of their friends, Justin and Charmaigne. Old feelings resurface as the two reflect on their almost decade-long friendship, pretend to live the lives taken away by their clashing dreams and obligations, and lament their many "what could have beens." Will they get it right this time around, or will they have to go on wondering what life would've been like if they didn't let their chance pass them by a second time?

So ito ang masasabi ko
ANG GANDA
ANG SAKIT
NAKAKAPANGHINAYANG
Story:
Indie film ba ito? Pang indie film kase yung story kase ang ganda talaga. Yung tipong may hugot, parang "boring" pero deep yung atake.
Cinematography:
Isa to sa mga pinoy films na naganda ako sa cinematography like ang ganda lang talaga. Yung color grading ang ganda rin. Kung e rarate ko ito i'll give this 9/10
I'll give you guys snippets from the film:
Music:
Ang ganda rin ng choice of music nila nagkataon pa talaga na trending yung jopay by mayonnaise these days. Pero di ko masyadong na appreciate yung pagkanta ni paulo like i'm sorry 😭 pero sige pwede na 😅
Actors:
Janine gutierrez ang galing mo as always.
Realization after watching the movie:
● what if? — kung gusto mo talaga na wala kang pagsisihan, take a risk.
● may nabasa ako na "don't expect what you can't communicate"; tama naman.
‼️ SPOILER ALERT ‼️
Pero maiba ako, diba medyo confusing yung last part? Do the right thing harold. Dami mo ng sinaktan 😂✌🏻 pero seriously mas mabuti talaga na tumuloy si harold sa canada and break up with his fiance and work on himself, mag move on. Ito yung ultimate lesson from the film na "pag di pa tayo tapos sa past natin, wag muna mag commit sa iba."

When the Philippino film industry makes a coming-of-age story, it doesn’t mess around. You’d never see a movie like Fan Girl come out of mainstream Hollywood. Wonderfully acted and frequently brave, it’s a movie that sticks with you.
Jane (Charlie Dizon) is obsessed with Paulo Avelino (playing a fictional version of himself). While attending one of his promotional appearances, she becomes determined to get close and hides in the back of his truck. When his vehicle stops by an isolated property in the middle of the countryside, she decides to show herself and discovers her idol is nothing like she expected.
When Fan Girl began, I didn’t know what genre of movie it belonged to and my uncertainty was doubled by the country of origin. When Jane sees that the raggedy-looking mansion in which Paulo is staying has its gates chained up… I couldn’t be sure of what to expect. Maybe that’s not such an uncommon thing in the Philippines. Maybe it’s a sign that something is very very wrong. To know, I had to keep looking. Many times, I was never sure if I could peg him as creepy, or if his safety was what I should be worried about until one critical revelation that put everything in perspective.
The words "coming-of-age" evoke certain ideas. You expect a nostalgic but frank look at the past, at the author’s childhood, probably centered around one big thing that made them realize how the world really works. There are no warm memories in "Fan Girl". In fact, some of what happens here is downright traumatic but they would still - in a way - be the kind that would make you look back and say "I’m glad that happened". Yes, it was not a picturesque event but it put you back on track and would eventually contribute to your current status as a solidly built adult.
The honest look at obsession gone too far, at bad decisions, at teenage desire and the ways it can go wrong would all be reasons to call this film brave but that’s not the reason I’m choosing that particular word; it’s for the performances. You would never guess that Charlie Dizon (you might know her by her real name, April Rose Dizon Matienzo) is 25. She has the look and mannerisms of a naive teenager down to perfection. I’ll also praise Paulo Avelino for his role in this story. It isn’t uncommon to see actors playing jerk versions of themselves, but usually, it’s played for laugh. His character isn’t funny at all and this kind of role is one I could see many performers wanting to shy away from.
I wonder if Fan Girl would’ve had the same impact on me if I knew what kind of film it was before going in. I probably wouldn’t have been surprised the way I was. Either way, the film’s honesty, its performances, and the conclusion are the kind that knock you off your feet. It might take a bit of work to track this one down and it can be a tough watch but it’s worth the effort. (Original Tagalog with English subtitles, June 22, 2021)
Pero upon reading reviews nung kakatapos ko lang panuorin nito, maraming comment na masyado daw "dry" ang acting niya and this is not the best film directed by Prime Cruz. Pero tbh, mas nafifeel ko yung connection since raw yung feelings. di ko sure kung indie type na rin ba to pero parang ganun. I mean sa pov ng character ni Pau dito, masyado siyang responsible and breadwinner kasi. Working student tapos family person pa. If I were in that scene, malamang hindi ako mag eeffort mag exert ng emotion kasi ang dami kong iniisip masyado HAHAHAHA iooverthink ko yung future lalo na hindi ako laking mayaman. That gives Janine Gutierrez's character, AM the vibe. Rich girl na free spirited. Pero mabait and winewelcome lahat lalo na when it comes to music. That fits Pau sa picture kasi nagvibe sila. So ayun i guess kaya ko nagustuhan to even sa start kasi ramdam ko yung scenes kahit dead air or may silence gap. Kahit yung awkwardness parang i think it's part of the scene kasi yung time setting ay paiba iba.
Kaya solid! And the feels din nung mej 20 mins. before mag end, grabbeeeee parang may roller coaster slight. Iniisip ko this is familiar with before sunrise or before sunset na fave ko.
Kung anong rate ko sa sleepless, same with here.
P.S.
Mayonnaise and Shirebound & Busking! Kudos!
When I check out a foreign film, I’m looking for something different. Either show me a story Hollywood wouldn’t have the guts to or put your country’s customs and eccentricities on full display and use them to make something new. Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay (which translates roughly to Brush off: Nine Lives) is not a must-see horror film. The special effects are fine for what they are, the scares are ok, the plot is nothing extraordinary but it stands out. By basing a horror film around traditional Filipino beliefs and superstitions, it guarantees you’ve never seen anything quite like it in the mainstream.
Funeral director Leni (Kathryn Bernardo) has been to too many wakes to believe in the superstitions her uncle Dencio (Janus del Prado) and his drinking buddy Marcelo (Marvin Yap) fear. When she and a group of teenagers - Cedric (Daniel Padilla), Hannah (Michelle Vito), Ashley (Miles Ocampo), Justin (CJ Navato) and Rico (Dominic Roque) - accidentally disrupt the funeral of Roman (Paulo Avelino), his ghost begins stalking them. What does this supernatural attack have to do with his wife, Lucy (Shaina Magdayao) and Leni’s nephew, Mac-Mac (Clarence Delgado)?
Think of Pagpag as a ghost story with elements of Final Destination. All of the teens broke one of the many rules of proper funeral etiquette: don’t sweep the floor, don’t bring home any of the food, don’t let your tears fall on the coffin, make sure you stop somewhere before going home to “brush off” any evil spirits who might have followed you, etc. Whether you already know these rules or not, seeing them broken and then come back in the form of ironic deaths is the best part of this movie. Most are pretty cleverly done (though one is quite clumsy and though it works as a nice “ewww!” moment, feels forced). Seeing the teens scramble to figure out what they need to do to appease Roman’s vengeful spirit is fun and some of the deaths are pretty creepy. Not creepy all the way through, but enough to ensure gore hounds have a good time.
Where the film could have used more work is the romance. Leni bumps into Cedric early in the film and they have a meetcute, which is an odd choice for a ghost story. Even if they do have chemistry, wouldn’t their union be a little awkward considering their first date coincided with the deaths of their friends and families? Another element that doesn’t really work concerns Mac-Mac. He’s been mute ever since Leni’s family discovered him several years ago under a tree so he doesn’t have much of a personality. Mostly, he’s there to dispense crucial exposition and provide a way for the film to wrap up. Though the numerous coincidences during the conclusion may be important story elements for the people of the Philippines, they will feel clumsy to westerners. Couldn’t this just be a 90-minute horrror movie that explores superstitions we’re not familiar with (or alternatively, have known since we were kids and are finally seeing utilized in a film) instead of a 105-minute movie that explores the "Pagpag" superstitions, and then a whole bunch of other stuff too? It's good to be ambitious but this film winds up diluting its scares and premise.
Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay is more of a curiosity than a nightmare-generator. Mostly, I got a kick out of it from the deaths and the sneek peak at another culture. It’s something new, which counts for a lot. (November 1, 2020)
