'Island of Whispers' by Frances Hardinge and illustrated by Emily Gravett
One of my auto-read authors!
The two books I've read so far from Hardinge have been amazing ('A Face Like Glass' and the excellent audiobook of 'Cuckoo Song'). I'm looking forward to making it three for three with 'Island of Whispers'!

Review: 'Never Ever Getting Back Together' by Sophie Gonzales
[ID: ‘Book Reviews’ and ‘Sabrina @ Notes From a Paper Plane Nomad’ in lilac and yellow text on a space-themed background.] The opposite of love isn’t hate. Not by a long shot. Hate and love are cousins. Possibly even siblings. So many ballads are sung about the power of love. Not nearly enough time is devoted to the passionate fulfilment only a perfectly matched enemy can bring. Rating: 3/5…

First Lines Friday (24th Feb '23)
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words.  What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? How it works: Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet –…

Happy New Year! (a collection of BTS birthday art + some life updates)
Happy New Year! (a collection of BTS birthday art + some life updates)
I hope you’ve all been well…it’s definitely been a while since I posted! Looking back, my last blog post was on the 14th November…it’s not long till the 14th of January! I’m sorry to have been so inactive… November was somewhat of a wild month for me – I was having job interviews, selling my own greetings cards (all drawn, printed and packed by just myself at home!), travelling to visit friends…

"The myths of my people say only a true bride of the Sea God can bring an end to his insatiable wrath. When the otherworldly storms rise from the East Sea, lightning breaking the sky and waters ripping up the shore, a bride is chosen and given to the Sea God. Or sacrificed, depending on the measure of your faith." - 'The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea', Axie Oh
This beautiful book published on Tuesday! Inspired by The Tale of Shim Cheong, this story follows an original new character, Mina, who takes the place of the sacrificial bride to save her brother and his beloved, Shim Cheong, who was to be sacrificed. [Full synopsis here] I love retellings, especially ones with a twist! I'd actually not heard of this folktale until this book started buzzing around my radar so I'm extra intrigued! The design is stunning too (the spine is even more colourful in person!) 🌊 I actually pre-ordered this one before hearing about the preorder campaign and I felt lucky to have made it into one of the international spots! The Mina sticker is so cute and I stuck it onto my new sketchbook (GIRL fanart coming?), and that art print (last slide) is stunning! Both by califlair ✨
Things now feel more surreal than ever. I hope you all take care 🙏🏼

Some Osemanverse pics and ramblings...
A bookstagram prompt the other day asked what books we’d love to have signed. Back when I first started reading ‘Heartstopper’ (by Alice Oseman) on Tapas, before the first physical versions were even on Kickstarter, I thought I’d be okay just reading it as a webcomic. I managed to hold out until Volume Three was announced and then I caved. I bought the first two volumes and pre-ordered a signed Volume Three 😂
I absolutely loved ‘I Was Born For This’ and would one day love to get it signed - same story for ‘Heartstopper’ Vols. 1 and 2! I haven’t yet read ‘Solitaire’ and ‘Radio Silence’ but I want to get them signed anyway. I have the signed editions of ‘Loveless’ and ‘Nick and Charlie’ but heck I’m definitely bringing them with me if I ever get to see Alice!
I don’t know when I’ll get to go to an Alice event - I imagine I’ll probably turn up with a whole suitcase of her books to get signed/personalised because I’m definitely getting each new book she’ll write ❤️✨

I love this series so much (‘Heartstopper’ by Alice Oseman!) and it’s perfect reading for Pride Month - or any time of the year!
Can’t wait for my ‘Heartstopper’ colouring book to arrive soon 😍🎉

Underrated characters
I would read a Grishaverse spin-off trilogy starring Kuwei Yul-Bo for sure. There’d be his fire magic, which is always fun, and he cracked me up a ton in ‘Crooked Kingdom’, plus his backstory has so much fodder re: his life as a Grisha in Shu Han, his dad, being kept at the Ice Palace, seeing the boy he fancied get with the dude who’s been wearing his face, etc. etc.
Henry Cheng from ‘The Raven Cycle’ by Maggie Stiefvater is also super underrated. We only really get to know him in Book 4 but wow he rocketed up to being my favourite Raven Boy in no time! (Sorry, Ronan. I still love you tho.) Henry deserves a spin-off too - I want to read more about his relationship with his mum as it seems a good deal more complicated than what we first get told (I can’t elaborate because spoilers!). Also - is Henry ace or am I dreaming?!
Tell me your favourite underrated characters - if I haven’t read those books I’ll make sure to pay them extra attention ❤️📚

Retellings to Read
Just a few retellings I want to read this year:
‘Cinderella is Dead’ by Kalynn Bayron (2020)  - a queer retelling set 200 years after Cinderella’s fairytale, where society demands girls to be selected as wives at an Annual Ball, and featuring a slow discovery that there’s much more to Cinderella’s story than it seems.
‘A Thousand Ships’ by Natalie Haynes (2019) - a retelling of the Trojan War from the perspectives of the women in its midst and the bloody aftermath of the Fall of Troy.
‘Spinning Silver’ by Naomi Novik (2018) - a loose retelling drawing on Rumplestiltskin and other folktales, where silver might just turn into gold, a fey king sets impossible challenges and the fate of two kingdoms are caught in a deadly web.
I’m excited for these! If you’ve read them, let me know what you thought (sans spoilers, obviously)
