First hospital trip. We visited my Grammy who broke her hip on Thursday and had surgery Friday. I just started teaching him to 'place' on his BOT mat and he's picked up on it beautifully. It seems we've found the solution to his reluctance to lay on hard floors. We went up there twice today. Autism and Service Dogs!!

I have an at-home #servicedog, and think that #autismservicedogs can be extremely helpful! I got Mikka for other purposes initially, but have found that she is really tuned in to me. She made me realize a lot more about what I actually needed, and helps me with several things.

This is a hand signal for a command that I taught her, which I call “go scout.” (The TV is on to show that she got no verbal prompt, though she knows both). I think it’s something that could be helpful for many autistics. She gets up and “leads the way” for me to leave my room when I need - like if I’ve watched something creepy on TV, or if I hear a little noise, etc. It’s comforting and makes me feel better about leaving my room, if I’m in a creeped out mood. Having her go “scout” ahead of me is great for #anxiety, and helpful for other reasons, as well.

Wondering if anyone else is #autistic and has a service dog? I really feel like they could help many people, if more knew about them! I also delight in #teaching Mikka silly things...like to play pattycake, receptively label body parts (she knows 9), or roll a giant die😅 She also has a way to say “yes” to a handful of familiar questions (working to expand her working vocabulary), which is one of the best things I’ve taught her. And she loves to learn!!

Let me know if anyone is interested in learning about #SDs and my experience with #ownertraining, how I taught her this task or any others, etc. I’m certainly not a guru of #dogtraining, but I feel like much that I’ve learned can be good supplemental info, or of particular interest to those that with #autism (and, those that care about us, and might want to help us train such tasks!).

So as you may know, I work at PetSmart as a pet trainer. Sometimes when I work shorter shifts like I did today, I don't put a vest on Nina and let her be a normal dog. I still insist that she not greet people without my cue to do so when she's "off duty" (we're still working on it because she loves people). Anyways, today a man came in to buy some crickets and as I was bagging them he randomly said, "That's a service dog, isn't she?" I was surprised since most people just assume she's a pet even while vested, so I asked him how he'd guessed. His answer? Training. He told me a friend of his had been training service dogs for years and he guessed Nina's service dog status based on her focus, that I didn't need to hold the leash, and that I could communicate with her with hand signals. Not gonna lie, as an owner trained service dog team, that made me feel so validated as a handler and trainer. I went on my first plane ride! My human called the @delta disabilities services beforehand to let them know that I would traveling with her. They were very kind and gave us a bulk overhead seat... I had so much room to relax! Our stewardess, Shauna, was the sweetest lady ever. She was waiting to show us our seat and make sure that we got settled ok; she even knew our names! The lady sitting next to us was very sweet too. We became friends and she let me use her feet as a pillow. Chilling like a true mobility assistant. This is an important personality trait for mobility assistance dogs because we spend a lot of time chilling waiting for the next time our humans need help. I've been really impressing my human lately. We had a huge setback in December and the beginning of January because she was sick and then in Germany and then sick again. I lost a lot of refinement in my basic obedience and wasn't alerting her to take her medication. Luckily, by "hitting the books hard" I gained back my previous level of training and more! Today was a big milestone for us. I passed my Canine Good Citizen Test! This is one of the recommended tests for service dogs. It basically tests to make sure that I have good manners in a variety of settings.
