What made you ship it?

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Everything about this relationship is written so well and is absolute perfection? The way they grow throughout the two books, and how that relationship evolves is a joy to read. Going to quote things from discussion I had with @bluethepineapple about it: From "Stay with me" to "Come visit me." "Kaz in a very real way represents Ketterdam and all the things that keeps Inej in chains. That she lets go of him even as she is in love with him represents the way her sense of agency and personal liberty had grown. Her feelings of indebtedness kept her close to Kaz far more than her indenture papers did, and by letting that go, she manages to free herself.

Kaz letting Inej go on the other hand symbolizes his growth in humanity. It is a decision that necessarily comes from his acknowledgement of Inej as human and valuable even beyond how he can use her. Kaz's gifts to Inej always enriched him first, and any benefit to her were merely incindental (especially at first). The boat is a gift that is solely for Inej, and by giving it, he gained nothing and stood to lose so much."

5 good qualities: A+ scheming, ruthless, cunning, clever, Inej (to him, this is his best quality don't @me)

3 bad qualities: he has bad qualities? Jk. Overestimating their plans (tho props to always having a solution), giving the cold shoulder/acting like he doesn't care (I don't think it's bad persay but I certainly want to smack him when he does this), has a little big of an ego.

favourite episode/etc:

- Fave book moments: When he's bandaging Inej, and when he stages a coup and just beats the hell out of people with his cane, when he basically calls Jesper his brother.

- Fave show: The face off with the Darkling, kanej moments, and when he fights the Volcra with his fucking cane. I also just generally appreciate how they handled his reluctantance on touching people.

This is also kind of inspired by the asked I got, but also I'm rewatching the final kanej scene (again) lol

It's sort of weird to expect Kaz to continue to try if Inej doesn't try as well. And it's not as if either one are completely blameless. Like for all the faults that Kaz has, Inej is also very bad at telling Kaz what she wants.

This is also something I noticed but it's starting to feel like Kaz is the one who messed up in the final kanej scene. Like Inej is like be honest! And he is. He's like I want you to be at the EP! And she's not. The one time where his armor is completely gone and she's not there.

Kaz has also done the following: actually tells the Crows his plans, helps Nina see Matthias, acknowledges Jesper as his brother, recruits Wylan and making sure he eats a proper meal (and gets a boyfriend), made sure Matthias (a stranger) wasn't put in the fighting pit... and on top of all that helped a whole other country to prevent the world from going to shit.

I probably missed some things, and this is just a silly little show... and we are dealing with a much more mature Kaz than in the books. But what else is he supposed to do? He's not even 100% bad a feelings, he's not great at it (he was raised in the barrel). Also, the touch aversion is not his fault. I really wish that wasn't used against him.

But Inej... Inej's trauma that runs so deep that she had a whole dream about touched and then lied about it, whose trauma is so fresh that when Jesper asked last season, she just gave him this look of pure horror. Inej, who expects so much of Kaz and for him to be open, will shut down just as easily.

Inej is a brave and lovely character, but she is so deeply flawed. She is so deeply traumatized, and one thing I give the show credit for is Inej's struggles are very much internal (bc that's very much book canon btw). That's why her hallucinations were about touch (and Kaz). She's not ready for what comes with a relationship, and Kaz was. Kaz could of told her he loved her and she would of still left.

You know that deleted scene would have added so much to the without armor scene... and I almost want to take back calling Inej mean lol the only thing that stopped me is Inej still would not have stayed regardless, and I have to think about that for a while. Because even if Kaz had asked, even if he had said he wanted her, or even let her hold his gloves... Inej was always going to go.

So, my initial thoughts of Inej not being ready for what a relationship with Kaz would look like is... imo accurate. Because Inej could have just as easily been like "if I'm ever in Ketterdam again, we'll talk." But she didn't. She let him go... admittedly to find her family, but still an admission that Inej was not prepared for what being with Kaz would look like as they work through their own struggles.

O M G thank you so much for saying it, i thought i was the only one who felt thay way, i don't understand what kaz did that was so wrong. And i know that is very unpopular but the quote about the armor using it like a 'yess queen' from inej is not it. From me that always showed how bad inej is also at feelings, and confusing honestly, but i always see people praising her for it and i always feel that i missing something lol

And the "fully clothed, gloves on.." always rub me the wrong way, maybe is supposed to be just a metaphor but i don't like it, i mean if it was a moment that showed inej messing it up in their relationship too i would like it more, but idk.

I think in the context of the books, I definitely understood where Inej was coming from, and I was like yes, Inej, you tell him what's on your mind! It also makes sense because Kaz is still very much hellbent on getting his revenge on Pekka and still trying to sort out his feelings for Inej, even as he desperately tries to get his money. There's a lot to unpack with this scene. There's a lot that Kaz could do, but because his judgment is being clouded, he simply cannot look forward and see that what Inej is asking of him, you know? She deserves an answer! But she's also more willing to listen to him, like there's an internal line where she's like, give me a reason to stay... and he doesn't.

But in the show? Absolutely not. This line is really mean without all that added context. It's a beautiful moment of how far Kaz has come and how much he is willing to work on himself (he actually nods as inej is telling him all this). I definitely felt like the hallucination had the opposite effect on him. Kaz is also no longer being beholden to taking down Pekka. He looks Inej with absolutely the most unguarded (would probably get you killed in the barrel) look. And her response is... without your armor? When he's been slowly taking it down with not just her but with his crows.

The whole "fully clothed, gloves on..." I have mixed feelings because they could have definitely alternated the line a little to make Inej look less like she's blaming him for his trauma (that she doesn't know about bc she wasn't in the EP)... but it's one of those popular book quotes... and the writers wanted to pluck it straight from the source... but decided not to deal with how awful it sounds when the audience just spent like 6 episodes learning about Kaz's trauma. It's really not her fault, I get the sentimentality to have it here tbh Was it necessary? not really lol

Ok, so i do have one tiny complaint this season lol

Like why wasn't Inej there for Kaz’s backstory... like the entire time she's like you better tell me about your life. And the thing is Kaz does tell people. He tells complete strangers his entire life. Including Nina (and Jesper, but that's his bestie!)

And I think that's actually one thing I would have loved to have seen stayed faithful to the books bc Inej is there for his panic attack in a prison wagon, is there when Kaz takes over the Dregs, when Kaz tells Pekka about the con & Alby (and she's once again is proven wrong and Kaz didn't actually do it), like they were using book quotes and this one is actually idk important: “When everyone knows you’re a monster, you needn’t waste time doing every monstrous thing.” (or maybe I missed it, I'm on my 3rd rewatch soon so I'll double check!)

I think the spirit of Kaz proving himself to Inej is there! Great, wonderful, even. But we need to also see Inej knowing she's been proven wrong too... proven that Kaz actually has his reasons.

For the "who would say 'I love you' first" poll, I haven't read the books, but, based on the show, I think it would be Kaz, because Inej said she would only have him without his armor. If they are going to be together, his walls are going to have to come down, so I think he is going to have to say it first.

I completely agree! Kaz, at least now that he doesn't have the whole Pekka + revenge thing to think about would probably need some time to get his head around it, but would also say it to get Inej to understand. Like he does say "I need you", "I want you", logically the next step would be to say those three little words... imo..

Also, as a book fan, I have thoughts about this because Kaz would say it on accident. This is where the show and books differ a little because book!Kaz reveals deep dark secrets at the most random of times. Like sir, we weren't prepared 😭 and he does this a lot, so I'm fully of the belief that he would say it and not realize until like a full 30 seconds.
