been thinking about the rabies condition in writing lately, which is a GREAT post about stakes and characterization. basically exploring how if there's a 100% chance a character is doomed, then they can and will do extremely dangerous/damaging/contraindicated things for the slimmest hope of survival. which is one of my Favorite narrative devices
but while we're using health metaphors, i've been thinking about another somewhat complicated means of introducing character stakes, which i'm tentatively calling 'the autoimmune condition' for reasons that are. obvious
the premise itself is simple: the character has Something that they need to survive. they either can't live without this thing or they will lose something vital about themselves if they lose this thing. there is no replacement or alternative for the thing. what's most important are that the consequences for losing it are Extreme, rabies-condition-style
in the real life allegory, this is the immune system. which is great for being alive!
then the problem is introduced when this thing starts killing the character.
the character still needs it to live.
so: there is a 100% chance that you will die if you destroy the thing killing you. if you impair it through other means, there is a 100% chance of consequences, though the severity of those consequences is up to the author. (these are medication side effects in the real life allegory.)
if you do everything you're supposed to then you'll PROBABLY survive, but you're gonna have to play lifelong tug-of-war to balance everything, and you are often going to have to choose between two shitty options. bc there is no alternative.
this is a counterpart to the rabies condition in terms of stakes; with this condition, your character has to make complicated and difficult decisions about what they're sacrificing for their future. it's not the immediate life-and-death stakes of rabies, it's a slow decay instead.
what side effect consequences are they willing to take on?? and what are they NOT willing to take on?? where do their priorities lie in terms of symptom management?? what other solutions are they looking for?? what are they willing to sacrifice??
and perhaps most importantly: what exactly do they need to lose before they'll Accept the side effects / sacrifices that used to terrify them?? how high do the stakes need to be??
at what point is this character going to look back at the choices they've made up to this point, and realize that they no longer recognize themselves??

Conversations I imagine the poets having
(mainly charlie being a menace)
└── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──┘
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Charlie: We need a diversion. I say Knox gets naked.
Neil: No.
Charlie: I could get naked.
The poets: NO!!!
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Cameron: Why is everyone so obsessed with top or bottom? Honestly, I’d just be excited to have a bunk bed.
Charlie:
Charlie: I'm gonna tell him.
Neil: Don't you dare.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Charlie: sapnu puaS.
Pitts: What??
Meeks: What language is that.
Charlie: Turn your phone 180 degrees.
*Charlie was removed from the groupchat*
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
*at 3am*
Charlie: *runs into todd’s room and turns on the light* Wake up sleepyhead!
Todd: *wakes up* Dude!
Charlie: *cackles*
Neil: *sits up from where they were sleeping behind todd* What the fuck, charlie?
Charlie: *jaw drops* Wait WHAT-
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Pitts, gardening: Hey, can you bring me the hoe?
Charlie: Yeah, sure.
*A few minutes later*
Charlie: Here you go.
Pitts:
Charlie:
Cameron: Why am I here?
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Knox: Ah, yes. Here we have a beautiful couple...
Todd: I really care about your feelings!
Neil: I really care about YOUR feelings!
Knox, turning his head: ...and then there's the disaster couple...
Meeks: YOU NEED TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO ME INSTEAD OF BEING AT THE HOSPITAL!
Pitts: I WOULDN'T HAVE TO SPEND SO MUCH TIME AT THE HOSPITAL IF YOU STOPPED INSISTING ON FIGHTING EVERYONE WHO COMES WITHIN A FIVE FOOT RADIUS OF YOU!
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Cameron, about Pitts and meeks: My god, would you two just get a room already?
Meeks: Excuse me, Cameron?
Neil: What he's saying is you both just keep agreeing about horrifying things and relishing everybody else's misery. So seriously, when's the wedding?
Pitts: ...
Knox: I ship it!
Charlie: HOW CAN YOU NOT?

one of the things that makes mdzs SUCH a great story is the fact that it's a tragedy with queer protagonists, but their queerness isn't the cause or the center of the tragedy. it's not even related, really. it's a story about love and loss and wrong and right, about what we owe each other and what we owe ourselves, about how you can find joy even amidst chaos and grief; its complexity and tragedy is what makes it so profound and touching. sure, there's 'casual' queerphobia in the story, but with everything else going on, it's not really relevant- wwx's mostly like, 'oh, i like guys? i like lwj? i love lwj? fuck, what if he doesn't love me back? am i being presumptuous to think he returns my feelings? what do I do now?' followed by 'wait, he loves me back??? we're getting married IMMEDIATELY', and that whole attitude is very refreshing because sometimes you just want to read a queer story that isn't about queer suffering but that's still incredibly miserable, and i think we as a queer community deserve it

john calvin [hears “doomed by the narrative” and gets so hard he gets nauseous]: i think i hauve tuberculosis

> Together with you
> it's all the small things
Waking up,
going to bed,
saying good morning
and good night.
The small crease between your brows
when something isn't right.
The smile moles on your cheeks
and the wrinkles under your eyes.
Every part of you
is beloved by me.
Sun or storm,
we have ups and downs.
But nothing will be more beautiful
than watching the sun set and rise
together with you.
