So, I noticed some interesting choices in episode 7 and wanted to talk about them.

First choice: So the first thing that stuck out to me is directly after the scene where Vegas catches Pete snooping around, he keeps Pete by his side for seemingly no good reason on the mission to Don's.

This was an interesting choice for me as Vegas handled those bodyguards outside of Don's compound with absolutely no aid required from Pete. And if he did think he needed someone at his back, why not choose Porsche? Well, I think the answer to that question is in how the scene where Vegas shoots those guards are blocked.

Second Choice: We see Vegas, Wang, and Pete step out of the truck. The guard in the black shirt immediately moves to confront Pete, crowding his personal space.

Third Choice: Now, when the guard in the black shirt steps back, for a moment this is the neutral pose they all assume as they discuss why Wang his new goons.

Notice that Vegas is behind the pair. Pete is by Wang's side, obscured by him, and it very much looks like Vegas has his body and attention angled towards Pete. But why?

Well here's where we get our hint. One could be forgiven for assume Vegas begins to break his neutral position and moves forward, ready to ambush, when the second guard turns his back to inform Don. But there's something else important happening at the exact same moment.

The guard in the black shirt starts advancing on Pete again. Vegas breaks his neutral pose the very moment that happens and moves into position. Vegas could have shot the man in front of him the moment he turned his back, which would have been the most efficient thing to do, using Pete and Wang as shields against a potential attack from the guard in the black. But INSTEAD he chooses to move forward, sacrificing his relative safety behind Wang and Pete. He moves in front of them.

Vegas pulls out his gun and who does he shoot first? The guard closest to Pete, the guard that poses the biggest threat to him. And it looks as if his attention is focused on Pete the entire time he does it.

Finally, the last frame I feel is important is him shooting Wang.

Again, Vegas is in front of Pete. Vegas is assuming the lion's share of risk, even if it is Wang. So what's my theory folks? I think Vegas wanted Pete with him to protect him. Because something went down in that house the night he caught Pete snooping. Pete did something to catch his attention. And whether he's protecting Pete out of a sense of affection or curiosity, the blocking of this scene saw his actions really prioritize Pete's safety in a very subtle way, and I don't think that's coincidence. The truck to Vegas: So after Percy was seen with a horse earlier in the show and it couldn't talk to him I was worried this scene might get cut. This is when he realizes he can communicate with horses via the zebra. And based on Ares bargain I really thought they were getting a glamorous way out. But no!! 2022: That Happened?

So yeah...2022 was kind of an interesting year for me all around. It started off decently enough with me getting to Vegas with my fam for my Dad’s 70th birthday celebration...despite my old work not letting me going to all of it since they’ve been short staffed for over a year like everyone else. 

Though by far the highlight of my hear is finally leaving CEVA Logistics after five years...but it was into a void of uncertainty. For the rest of 2022, I’ve been working with my Dad and a friend of his in the trucking logistics industry with the idea of me starting my own carrier developmental program. I’m still taking classes and getting all the knowledge I can get but I don’t regret leaving CEVA at all. I was getting nowhere there and it was taking it’s toll on me mentally.

I’m being literal by the way. I needed therapy to get through working there because I had to rely on so many people for my job to function and when someone else doesn’t do their job, I’m the one that gets the earful from the customers. 

Though that’s not the main thing I wanted to talk about with this post. What I want to discuss is how my mental prowess has been in 2022 and what I plan on trying to achieve in 2023. 

First on a positive note: I have done, I THINK, a better job at not overthinking as much about certain aspects about myself and trying to hard into fitting certain groups. At this point, I have a better idea of who my real friends are and know who I don’t need to lie to myself to in order to feel accepted. I still go out and hang out with my rl crew playing disc golf, chilling playing games, going to sports events, all the usual stuff we do. 

I want to give a quick shoutout to my friends Mark, Eric, Andrea, and my disc golf crew for just liking having me around when I don’t talk a whole lot unless I feel like bring out my inner Rocky with the snark. 😂

I realize more than ever now that the people who want to see me happy and see me succeed is a LOT bigger than I give myself credit for. Even if it wasn’t, I’m learning to tell myself that I should treat myself better and cutdown on the backhanded compliments and the self roasts for comedic effect. I go out of my way to overdo it to make others I feel smile even if I make myself feel miserable. When I do that, I tend to get caught back up in that self-inflicting cycle I fall into constantly. Soooo I’m still trying to figure that part out. 

Going into 2023, there are at least three things I plan on doing in order to become a better Rocky or Justin (Yes that’s my rl name for those who don’t know):

1. Getting this trucking brokerage up and running by means of starting to generate my own revenue. 

2. Getting back into doing 5K races with my Mom.

3. Going back to seeing a therapist.

#1 speaks for itself but I want to discuss #2 a little bit. I used to do 5Ks with my mom a few years ago but I eventually stopped due to pain in my kness/ankles at times but mostly due to self-image issues. I’m a nearly 6′3 300 lbs black man. I felt ridiculous being out there with a bunch of experienced runners who do these races like they’re nothing. I get self-conscious when I do things like that or when my fit friends offer me to go work out with them. I tend to look down upon myself or try too hard to not feel like a colossal f**k up and a waste of God’s creation. I want to get back into it as another means of getting myself out as well as add in some more exercise that can lead to me having my stamina on the disc golf course. This also leads me into #3: Going back to seeing a therapist.

I stopped seeing my old therapist since he wasn’t in network with my new insurance carrier that I obtained when I left CEVA. Not to mention the demand for therapy is at an all time high with all the sh*t that’s been going down in the world recently but I ain’t even going to attempt to dig down that endless rabbit hole. 

The main thing I wanted to get into with my next therapist is something that may sound controversial but hear me out: I want to get to the root of why I’m ashamed of being black but in a sense of not having a ton of black interests. 

This past year, I met a black furry for the first time in my life. Anyone who knows me knows I’ve been a closet furry for a years now. Same can be said with me being a brony. Shit. It was only five years ago I met a black brony for the first time. I bring those up and many others coming up because for years, my interests and my upbringing are elements that often made me wondered where I belonged as far as social circles go. I’ve been through so many social circles on Twitter that have fallen apart due to manipulation on their end or my own mental breakdowns or both than I can count. I already have to change a handful of things about myself irl also to be good enough for certain parts of my family so it’s like a never ending juggling match on who the real Rocky/Justin even f***ing is. 

My long term goal is to move out of the family house in the next year or so I can get the one thing I’ve wanted more than anything the last 10-15 years; A dog and/or a cat. I just need at least one being in my life that I don’t feel is always constantly judging me, likes chilling with me, and who’s love is unconditional as long as I treat them right (which of course I plan to do). It’s the matter of generating enough revenue through this brokerage and being able to get an affordable place for my potential pupper or kitty goes meow to have the best life I’m able to give them. 

Though I’ve been babbling more than long enough. Let me end by saying this:

I can’t begin to thank everyone who has stuck with me as long as they have through my mental endeavors. For many, I’ve given plenty of reasons to give up on me. Even I at times have told people that I’m not worth it. Some of those people stayed anyway and stayed rooting for me to become a better and happier person. You guys are all amazing people and you more that deserve to get everything you worked your asses off for and you’ve dreamed about. I say that from the bottom of my heart because I know being friends with me isn’t an easy matter. In 2023, hopefully I’ll make knowing me being a little bit easier.

Ava is dreaming about Deborah on stage, black sequin blazer glittering like a disco ball as she obliterates another misogynist, when she is pulled back into consciousness by something poking repeatedly at her left foot.  She kicks in retaliation, hard.

“Ow!”

At the realization there’s someone in her hotel room, Ava screams and blindly kicks harder through the comforter, connecting again with the intruder.

“Ow, stop!  Ava!  It’s me, jesus christ, who are you, Ronaldo?”

At the muffled sound of Deborah’s voice, Ava scrambles to pull off the Deborah Vance branded sleep mask with built-in noise canceling headphones she’d been wearing and props herself up against the pillows.  It was still pitch dark in the room, the only light coming from Deborah’s iPhone flashlight currently pointed directly at Ava’s face and subsequently blinding her.  “Fuck!  D?  Are you okay?  What… can you point that somewhere else?  Fuck.”

And then it hits Ava like a truck:  Deborah found out about the email and she’s about to be smothered with a shitty overstuffed pillow covered in other people’s skin cells and left for dead in a Hilton Garden Inn somewhere in the middle of the Arizona desert.  Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Deborah redirects the light to the sheets still covering most of Ava’s body and Ava blinks rapidly, as if that would help her pupils adjust any faster.  “I tried texting, calling, and knocking.  Not my fault you sleep like the dead.  Get up.  We’re hitting the road.”

Deborah doesn’t sound angry and she hasn’t been hit yet, so Ava feels fractionally less like throwing up.

“What?  What time is it?”  Ava rubs at her eyes, trying to gauge Deborah’s expression in the near pitch darkness.

“Five.”

“You’ve got to be joking.”

“Not this time.”

“We only got here three hours ago!  We need to have a talk about boundaries and you keeping a keycard to my room if we’re going to keep doing this.”

“We’ll discuss it.  Now c’mon, let’s go,” Deborah orders, gesturing at the majority of Ava’s suitcase that is strewn all over the furniture of Ava’s room.  “Are you always like this?  You’re an even bigger slob than DJ.”

Insults before the sun is up has to be a new record.  Ava can’t even remember what city they’re in.  “Wow okay, listen, you only gave me an hour to pack for a cross-country tour and half my clothes I had to pull out of the dryer!  They’re air-drying!”

“In crumpled piles?  You are inept.”

Ava’s eyes are finally adjusting to the darkness and Deborah appears to be already dressed and made up, though with significantly less makeup than she would with anything on the schedule in Las Vegas.  She’s wrapped in the fur-lined coat from the funeral and Ava has to swallow at the sudden tightness of her throat.  Her dad is still–

She’s distracted from the acute grief by peering at Deborah’s feet.  “Are those sneakers?”

Deborah pops her heel and shines the flashlight beam down, illuminating dark knit Nikes with a flawlessly clean white sole.  And she’s in sweatpants, what the hell?

“Deb, I’m shook!”

Deborah swings the light back at Ava and she has to shade her eyes, squinting at Deborah’s outline.

“Shook?  I didn’t even touch you.  Where the hell did you even get that thing?” Deborah asks, gesturing to the sleep mask tangled at Ava’s hip.  It’s wrapped in black satin with an elegant cursive Deborah Vance stitched in shiny gold.

“Oh Marcus keeps all your QVC prototypes in that weird ass Christmas room of yours.  He let me go through it once and I snagged this gem.  It’s going to be perfect for the bus.  I can drown out both light and your snoring.”

Deborah snorts loudly but doesn’t deny it.  Ava’s teased her mercilessly on and off since their nap at Seven Graces.  “Fuck off.”

“Like a trucker.”

“Shut up and move it.”  When Ava doesn’t get up, Deborah swats at her leg.  “C’mon there’s somewhere I want to go and it’s time-sensitive.”

Ava finally reaches across the nightstand and turns on the bedside lamp, washing the room in soft yellow.  And damn, Deborah Vance in light makeup, an ankle length fur coat, her natural hair, and sweatpants is really a vision.  “D, this casual look is doing something for me,” Ava says, fanning herself.

“Ava, for fuck’s sake, let’s go!”

“Aw, you’re blushing!”

Deborah doesn’t respond, just turns away and starts gathering Ava’s clothes, tossing them in the general direction of the open suitcase.

“Do we at least have time for matcha?” Ava asks, leaning her head against the Rolls’s passenger side window and closing her eyes again.  Deborah is speeding, as usual, across the dark open highway.

“No, but we can stop after.  And stay awake, we’re almost there.”

“Where exactly is–” Ava opens her eyes to a brightly illuminated Grand Canyon National Park sign and her heart clenches.  She’s tearing up instantly.  Her dad had always wanted to go to the Grand Canyon, but her mom was always too paranoid to fly and now he’d never get to.  She’d told Deborah last night as they crossed the border from Nevada into Arizona.

“You said you’d never been.  So we’re going.”  Deborah’s voice is so soft and Ava is now full-on ugly crying.

Deborah pays the entrance fee in cash with exact change and they pull into a nearly empty parking lot.  The sky is just beginning to lighten from black to light blue as Deborah shifts into park and reaches for Ava’s hand, squeezing it quickly.  It’s a short walk to the overlook point and Ava takes the time to mop at the snot dripping from her nose with the sleeve of her favorite olive Carhartt jacket.  The horizon is just starting to glow golden as she zips it up to her chin and joins Deborah a few paces from the railing along the canyon edge.

“I don’t know how you operate on so little sleep,” Ava says, yawning, “but thank you.  For this.”

“Thank you for just picking up and leaving like that.  I know it was sudden.”

It had barely been two days back in Vegas after Boston before Deborah decided to fuck the planning and head out on the road just the two of them.  Damian and Marcus could pull the details together in the background while Deborah worked open mic nights in shitty comedy clubs and bars throughout the southwest, working to hone the new material.

“I know it’s hard.  Change.”

Deborah doesn’t answer, but purses her lips.  She hadn’t taken well to losing her residency, and the shitty review in the Sun of her final show was the final straw.

Ava thinks again about telling Deborah about the email as the first true glimpse of the sun peeks over the far edge of the canyon, illuminating a sliver of striated red earth.  They stand there in silence as the sky continues to lighten and change blue to orange and pink and back to blue again, revealing more and more of the great canyon they stand at the precipice of.

“The last time I saw a sunrise I was totally fucked up on PCP at Coachella.”

Deborah snorts and it’s Ava’s favorite.  Besides the cackle, of course.  “Lovely.”

“This is better.”

It’s an impossible feeling standing there on the edge of something so vast, the Colorado river cutting shimmering and snaking through the canyon floor below.  She feels infinite and miniscule all at once.  And even with the email lingering, Ava can’t help but feel like this is the start of something incredible between her and Deborah.

“I don’t want to forget this moment,” Ava says, turning to Deborah who continues to stare out at the sunrise.

“It really is beautiful, isn’t it?”

“Yeah,” Ava agrees, not looking away from Deborah’s profile.  “It is.”

Eventually the colors begin to settle, the sky a bright blue, and both Ava and Deborah are shivering.

“Should we snuggle for warmth?” Ava asks, wagging her eyebrows.

Deborah answers with an eye roll.  “Dream on.”

“Oh, I will.”

Deborah pivots on her heel and starts back towards the car, beckoning Ava behind her.  “I know, honey.  Kiki told me about your sex-ish dream.”

Ava gasps.  “Traitor!”

Some speculation I made a while ago about how the episodes of the PJO adaptation might be broken down, given that we know there will be 8 of them. Have also now added some possible episode titles because I do like the idea that they would use chapter titles for them.

Episode 1: Chapters 1-4. All of the Yancy events are in this part - the field trip and attack by Mrs Dodds, Percy overhearing a bit of conversation between Mr Brunner and Chiron. Percy goes home and he and Sally go to Montauk. Percy dreams of a horse and an eagle. Grover shows up, and he, Sally and Percy start to drive to Camp Half-Blood. Percy fights the Minotaur, and the episode ends as he loses consciousness.

Introduced in this episode: Percy, Grover, Chiron (as Mr Brunner), Mrs Dodds, Sally, and Gabe.

Title: “I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher” or “My Mother Teaches Me Bullfighting”

Episode 2: Chapters 5-8. Percy wakes up, has nectar, and has the conversation with Chiron and Mr D. He gets a tour of Camp Half-Blood. We see some of the camp activities and then it focuses on capture-the-flag, ending with Percy’s claiming.

Introduced in this episode: Mr D, Argus Annabeth, Luke, and Clarisse (+ other minor campers).

Title: “I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom” or “We Capture a Flag”

Episode 3: Chapters 9-11. Percy’s moved into the Poseidon cabin and has another conversation with Chiron and Mr D before being sent to the Oracle. Percy gets Riptide and the flying shoes and the main trio begin their quest. They encounter their first obstacle in the Furies on the bus, and then they wind up at Aunty Em's. It ends with Percy sending Medusa's head to Olympus, and then the trio leave to continue their journey, uncertain what will come next.

Title: “I Am Offered a Quest” or “We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium”

Episode 4: Chapters 12-14 or partway into 15. Grover and Percy discuss Pan. They find Gladiola the pink poodle and catch a train to St Louis. They visit the Gateway Arch and encounter Echidna, and the trio meet back up after Percy geronimos into the river. Possibly the episode ends there, or possibly it extends to include the IM with Luke and maybe the conversation with Ares.

Title: ”I Plunge to My Death” or “I Become a Known Fugitive”

Episode 5: Chapters 15-partway through 16. If it wasn’t done in Episode 4, we now get the IM with Luke and the conversation with Ares. Either way, the bulk of the episode focuses on the events in Waterland. It ends with the trio in the zoo truck, either on the conversation about Thalia or the dream of Luke talking to Kronos.

Title: “A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers”

Episode 6: Remainder of Chapter 16. Opens either with the dream of Luke talking to Kronos, or just with Grover waking Percy up. They free the animals and find the Lotus Hotel and Casino. The remainder of the episode focuses on the events within the Hotel, extending that sequence a bit. At the end of the episode they get out and it ends with a wham lime about the time left to complete the quest.

Title: “We Take a Zebra to Vegas”

Episode 7: Chapters 17-19. They catch a taxi to Santa Monica. Percy meets the Nereid and gets the pearls. They take a bus to Hollywood, encounter Procrustes, escape and then get to DOA Recording Studios. They bribe Charon. Annabeth gets them past Cerberus and the trio officially enters the Underworld. The shoes drag Grover towards Tartarus and they see the pit before going to Hades' castle. They confront Hades before realising the mistake and escape using the pearls.

Introduced in this episode: Procrustes, Charon, Hades.

Title: “We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of”

Episode 8: Chapters 20-22. The trio appear in the sea and are picked up by the Coast Guard. Percy confronts and fights Ares. They fly to New York, and Percy goes up to Olympus to return the master bolt. After that he goes home to see Sally. He finds Medusa's head and leaves it with her when he goes back to Camp Half-Blood. Luke reveals that he was a traitor. Goodbyes are said and Percy prepares to leave Camp as the summer, the episode and the season have all reached an end.

Thony and Marco's marriage had been unstable for a while before she abruptly left the country with their son Luca in the middle of the night. Because he couldn't pay back the money he owed them, their car was repossessed, they were on the verge of losing their home, and then they lost their friends. Thony being the talented cardiothoracic surgeon in Manila, an established professional who had to cope with insults, embarrassment, and side discussions because of her husband's well-known habit, as well as caring for a son with an autoimmune disease had to have been hard. I'm guessing that most of her money as a surgeon went into Luca's hospital bills and paying off some of Marco's debts. Marco may be a good dad, but he gives off loafer vibes.

2. The Barsamians were not thoroughly explored this season, but at least we know who they are and what they stand for. Starting with Hayak, he is not the terrifying figure that the plot claims him to be, nor is he really a leader to begin with. He delegates all the job to his men, particularly Arman. The only time he wanted to personally handle anything is when he wanted to kill Thony a defenseless cleaning staff. Hayak's means anything at all because of Arman's efforts. Arman does everything for him: he negotiates his deals, collects his taxes, kills his enemies, runs his trucking company, and runs the club, yet Hayak has the gall to call him nothing despite his unflinching loyalty. Then there's Tarik, who we know has no chance against Arman. He's a spoiled brat who's insecure, impulsive, and a douchebag. He reminds me of Joffrey from Game of Thrones. This moron kept the gun he used to murder Theo for bragging purposes, I am sure. Then there's Isabel, who is completely innocent of her family's criminal activities. It would be good to see more of her and how she plans to rebuild her family's reputation. Season two will hopefully introduce us to Hayak's wife, Tarik, and Isabel's mother.

3. Fiona, Chris and Jaz have been the much-needed support system Thony needs. They have been extremely helpful and accommodating. Now that Thony is in charge of cleaning Arman's $6 million and safeguarding Hayak's money, it would be interesting to watch how she is able to launder it through the cleaning business. Even though Thony is a surgeon by profession, she is likely good with numbers as well. She, unlike Nadia, may know how to properly cook the books. When Isabel glanced over the club's books, which Nadia handles, she noticed the scheme almost immediately. She can use some of the money to assist Fiona find a decent immigration lawyer for Chris, pay Arman's lawyers, fund Nadia's activities, and hire a lawyer to get Luca back. Because international child custody battles are among the most complicated and excruciatingly stressful, she may be unable to establish that clinic for the time being.

4. Arman and Nadia's marriage is a curious thing; it's not romantic, as one might anticipate from two attractive people, but it feels more like conditional love. We are informed that Arman comes from a poor household, but his hard work and business acumen earned him a "good life." The club that Hayak entrusted him to manage in order for them to launder illicit gun trade money, is a symbol of Arman's successful life: tailored suits, bottle service, and a clientele of Vegas's elite. To complement his status and suave as a man of influence towering in height at over six feet over most individuals he interacts with, he has a drop-dead gorgeous wife who actively supports his criminal life because of the perks that come with it. They quarreled publicly and quite loudly too over him not being ambitious enough and insistent enough, and of course of his intentions towards Thony. Nadia wants him to raise through the ranks in the Barsamian organization oblivious to the risks that come with that kind of power. That is not to say that Nadia is a bad person, but at this point they both want different things. It would be interesting to see if Nadia will play the game Arman is playing.

What characters or plot points were cut from the final product?

Duane Capizzi:

Ooo, starting with a right hook to the jaw!

Let me think about that for a moment: I'm hesitant to give too much away because I'm really hoping we can tell more stories in this world at some point

Which is to say, we tend not to waste anything: if we don't use it when we originally planned, we usually find a way to use something later - and there's usually a "karmic" reason that we waited.

I'll also preface by saying this: I know season 3 was more of a mini-drop and some felt season 4 was rushed. But I wish EVERY season were longer. Season 1: ideally, i wanted the Pilot to be its own event and 10 more episodes after that (but we had to tell the post-Pilot story in 7. At the end of the day, that had its benefits: we got to the Shadowsan turn earlier and I think that's when a lot of viewers realized the ride they were truly in for). Season 2: we initially figured we'd need 5 episodes to have Carmen doing the ACME dance with Chief, and wound up doing it in 3 - mostly because it quickly became clear that Rio needed to be a 2 parter, and the Zack and Ivy backstory a rough 2 parter. So we squeezed 3 episodes worth of plot into 209. It was exhilarating!

So, we had hoped to have more episodes for Season 4 of course. We had a ton of ideas and had to compress things a bit. But honestly in many ways it was for the better. I know we all wanted to live in this world longer, but I think sometimes the flip side is true - when you have big ongoing storylines, it can get frustrating when some things drag out too long. But, we got all the "story" we wanted to tell in Season 4 - we just lost some "incident" if that makes sense. We would have taken longer to get there.

So, all that preface to answer the question: we wanted to do more musical numbers! We had a Bollywood dance sequence in a return to India caper with Paperstar. We wanted to do a famous Elvis suit theft in Las Vegas during an Elvis impersonator convention (Shadowsan's an early elvis guy; Brunt likes the Vegas "jumpsuit" era). We also wanted to do a thread where Gunnar gets captured by ACME so that Julia could interrogate him and he could play mind games with her a la Hannibal Lector and Clarice. CAVEAT TO ALL THIS: these were some ideas that were bouncing around, that may not have seen the light of day if we couldn't get them to work. But they were on our wish list.

re: "other stories" - I could live with these characters for another 32 episodes easily and there have of course been discussions. But alas, that is up to the powers that be. Let's keep fingers crossed - and keep the Carmen love alive online so that someone up there takes note

Were there any scenes cut for time that were your favorite?

Duane Capizzi:

Not much springs to mind: our directors were amazing at getting everything in the scripts to fit naturally (and in fact, I was the one who was usually suggesting trims to let other things breathe, etc). We were limited to 22 minutes of episode time, NOT counting front and end credits so a little longer than the average show. We have a pretty good idea when the SCRIPT is too long, so the cutting usually happens at script stage before it gets to the board crew so that they don't waste efforts over-boarding material that won't be used.

We had hoped to build out Chase and Carmen teaming up for the first time, meeting at Carmen's hotel lobby etc for more scenes of them together; but had to reduce that to get that all to fit in the VERY packed episode 406. But again, tighter was fine considering. That's one area that leaps to mind. (note that when I say packed, I don't mean that in a bad way: we spend a lot of time pouring over details in editing to make sure everything gets its due).

If I think of anything, I'll circle back at a later point. But the simple answer is that scenes were usually trimmed or compressed at script rather than board or animatic. So nothing comes to mind. I know it's hard to believe, but "shorter is usually better."

We saw that in s4 episode 6 that Julia's mother(?) is wearing a necklace remarkably similar to the one Julia wears all the time. Is this the same necklace and if so, why was it given to Julia?

Just when I thought I was detail oriented! Wow! You guys blow me away

I can't take credit for that: it was either the board artist or director who added that. They do slip things in! As I've said before, EVERYONE on the crew really brought their A-game and were as deep thinking and as passionate as I was/am about the show.

It took me three or four reviews before noticing that the team had slipped in baby Carmen near the play set in Mom's front yard at the end of 408. When I caught it, I was like: bravo!

Fuel:

When they first met, Zack and Ivy said to Carmen that they were the only family they had, do you know what happened to the rest of Zack and Ivy's family?

Duane Capizzi:

I don't. At least, I don't yet until such a time that I might have the opportunity to explore that. It was important to their relationship with Carmen that they be orphans, so they had that common bond (aside from being "thieves who steal from bad guys" - even if it was only gonna be one time for Zack and Ivy).

I know there are writers out there who like to do entire bio's for characters up front but i'm not one of them. It could be a trap in many ways. I like to have a general idea but be open to the demands of the ongoing storyline. You discover things along the way - it's like you're taking a journey with the characters by writing them, and the longer you spend, the better you get to know them (that was not a prepared statement by the way - I just made that up but I'll have to use it again :). So in Z/I's case it wasn't important to the story or Carmen's relationship, we felt. Conversely, we STARTED with Shadowsan's family backstory with 203, but more important to me was that we use it as a platform to explain why he stays with Carmen and crew. He really has no home at that point, so it was relevant to the present ongoing story. Which is what made that especially powerful to me.

Also, there's always a push-pull between telling character back stories while balancing them with ongoing episodic plots. You have to service both. If you just tell back story, then you're writing a biography

Arden:

What was the biggest challenge when designing these characters, especially the pre-existing characters from the series in the 90's?

Duane Capizzi:

This is probably more of a question for Chromosphere, re: challenges. But from my standpoint overseeing that process, the first thing I'll say is that we weren't necessarily trying to be "true" to those characters since we reinvented nearly every one from the ground up. (with the exception of Carmen of course - her trademark red hat/coat weren't going anywhere! But mostly the update with Carmen was in the styling of her "outerwear"

ALTHOUGH: I will admit that I was pushing for Carmen to have shorter hair as Carmen. I thought it would be a cool update. Chromosphere were really passionate about giving her long full hair and I have to see that they were right. The short tomboy cut worked so well for Black Sheep anyway. We had a different hair style for each of her ages.

So about the reinventions: Gunnar is in spirit a similar character to the original (old colleague in Vile and an early mentor if I remember), but his presentation completely different. We weren't trying to be "in canon" with the original. The beauty of CSD is that every incarnation has been its own entity so that freed us to reimagine the characters. THE CLEANERS, for instance: gimme some Cleaner love! There were a pair of janitors from the original game named RICK AND NICK ICK. They were literally janitors, it was too silly for our purposes. But, it's one small step to make them "Cleaners" (in the sinister hit men sense) - and lo, our reinvention.

So to summarize the answer to your question, they weren't really challenges to me so much as FUN to creatively reinvent the original characters (many of which were from the game, so not really "characters" per se with dialogue and inner lives). Whenever we could, we tried to use character names from the originals and update their looks and personalities. Where we couldn't find an equivalent for what we needed, we created characters from whole cloth. For instance, it seemed a miss to do a heist show without a tunnel guy and a high rise climber guy. Hence, LC & ET, everyone's favorite taco truck vendors!

(yes, i've seen some short hair carmen fan art on Twitter - someone did a great one recently!)

Arden:

Are there plans to give us more of the characters in, say, novel/graphic novel form?

Duane Capizzi:

I know HMH has done a bunch and no doubt have more in works. There's currently a novelization of the Pilot with some additional material if anyone's interested. I consulted on the second one, Clue for Clue, because it falls in the timeline while Chase was still Interpol/pre-Acme so was tricky.

And depending on whether another series in this canon makes it to air, I may just approach them about writing one or two myself to get some "further adventures" our there. Anything is possible!

Arden:

If you could go back and change anything about the series, what would it be?

Duane Capizzi:

File under anecdote, but there was what I felt was an important expression on Gray that kept me awake at nights, from his graduation ceremony at Vile. When we revisited those flashbacks in the Gray arc in Season 4, I had them change his expression there (to be more evil less innocent). We had it corrected in 404 so was able to get permission to have Netflix "fix" the Pilot by adding that shot in. I am tenacious!

We really poured over everything, it's the series that I have virtually zero complaints with the end product to be honest. But the simple answer is: I would have gone back to 106 and "un-greek'd" Gray's nametag. It's sort of a rule for international that we scramble signage (which is weird for a show that takes place in many countries/languages, I know I know). It's mostly for localization/translation reasons. And I'm sure there are some countries where Gray's name might be spoken differently. But as a proper name, I think we could have made an exception and seen "Gray" on his name tag. See? Details! But that's about the worst of it

there's also like one small line from Chief in 208 where she indicates she knows Carmen is a good guy (something to that effect) which I felt was too absolute and would have tweaked the line to temper it a bit. It's tiny, but looking back it sort of bugs me and I kick myself for not catching it. But this is absolutely the series I wanted and couldn't be happier.

Carmen:

How did Carmen know she could trust Julia? As far as we know, she has not seen or heard Julia defending her, and in the Fashionista Caper, Julia even held up her gas gun to her, saying she was under arrest. Do you have any opinions on this? Was it just intuition?

Duane Capizzi:

I'm gonna go with intuition

Carmen was raised on an island with some hardened criminal types. I think she's a pretty good judge of character. Poor Julia, trying to be tough with Carmen didn't suit her.

But, great observation! I'd have to mentally step through everything to see if Carmen had any earlier indication but i think you're right there.

Carmen:

Are there any characters that didn't actually interact that you think would get along well?

Duane Capizzi:

Amazing question! First, I'd have to think more about who DIDN'T meet - you're asking the hard questions haha. But "get along well" is very specific! Hmmm, care to volley anyone?

I'll also add that so many smaller moments get lost in the "binge" of it all, but I am surprised how few fans have noted the first meeting between Player and Julia. THAT was a good one IMO! Very sweet!

Before getting back to your question, I also want to add that we were originally going to find a way for Carmen to lose her earring in Stockholm so that Julia could pick it up and be communicating with Player. BUT, I cut it at treatment stage because I knew we didn't have room in that episode to service it. Circling back to questions 1 & 2, another case where it turned out better saved for later IMO (saving Player meeting Julia, not to mention the earring business in 402 with Ivy).

Oh of course, Julia and any of the other Vile members. It would have been Gunnar for my vote, as mentioned earlier. We probably would not have had Julia meet anyone else and mixed it up more. I like that Cleo sort of became J's personal nemesis.

YES, SONIA & XIFENG (and LUPE PELIGRO, if I can add). The intent was (and is, if we ever get to revisit) to see them again in Carmen's travels. We started to expand Carmen's world but when we finally learned the finite number of episodes we had to finish the story, we drilled back down into the essentials. Would love to see them some day!

I'm hesitant to share too many things I have in mind in this forum for hope that they will see the light of day one day. You know, "spoilers"

Julia:

Do you have any opinions on Zari? Just in general? Some thoughts on her backstory would be nice if possible

Duane Capizzi:

I love Zari! I really don't have any back story on her at this point. She was originally just "Agent B" but when the need arose to give story points to another agent, we chose her because she looked so awesome! And Sharon Muthu gave voice to her so wonderfully.

I love when we finally teamed her with Chase. Hopefully the anticipation was that she would give him a hard time. I love that we defied expectation (organically, of course) and had her respect him by the end of that episode (for believing that he foiled Carmen!)

Julia:

Do you have any thoughts on small facts about any character, major or minor, that you think are fun/interesting to think about, but don't necessarily add to the plot itself?

Duane Capizzi:

Bellum, like myself, likes cats. But you knew that!

I try to put everything pertinent on screen, doing double duty to service any given episode's story but also the overarching story. That "journey" thing I mentioned earlier - we had no idea Chase falling on his own car would be a thing when I first came up with it. But as other characters refer to the incident, it took on a life of its own and made the characters feel more real.

Sorta kinda related to this question and some earlier ones, I will say that I DO think there's more to learn about Shadowsan's past vis a vis Lady Dokuso: it's clear to me that they have a history together, and it's something I hope to explore someday soon (maybe in a book if not another series

Julia:

Are the Carmen Sandiego books a part of canon?

Duane Capizzi:

I only consulted on the first two or three (too busy with series!) and have not read them, so hard for me to answer in a definite way. They are definitely in the universe we've created, but not in the timeline that I know of (which would have been too hard to pull off with our script development running concurrently). But do know that the book team at HMH pays close attention to the series and world so they should be perfectly compatible. Look no further to their clever social media on the series for example.

Kenz:

We saw in season 4 that Julia and Carmen helped each other mid to long term; would there ever be a possibility that Julia would permanently or semi-permanently join team Red?

Duane Capizzi:

Of course there's a possibility. But in a sense, with ACME now finally on Carmen's side, in a sense if Carmen were back in the game Julia, Chase, Zack and Ivy would ALL be an extension of Carmen's crew. But, would J remain with ACME or literally come to Carmen's team at her HQ? As they said in an old radio show: "Only The Duane Capizzi knows ..."

Kenz:

Where do you see Carmen in her retirement (if she retires)? Do you think she would still travel the world or settle down somewhere? Similarly, do you have any thoughts on what some other characters could be doing years down the line?

Duane Capizzi:

That is a big question, and one difficult to answer without some potential future spoilers (and yes, I really want to tell more Carmen stories if you can't tell But I'll answer by giving you one "read" on our open-ended ending as seen in 408 (read no further if you haven't seen it - yeah, right haha). The ending suggests to me that Carmen settled down for a spell to forge that relationship with her mother, to make up for lost time. But, if that is indeed Carmen that we see on the rooftop, I think the ending suggests that Carmen doesn't stay still for very long. If Vile is back, there is work to be done! Carmen has a life mission - she's one determined lady.

But of course, it's deliberately ambiguous: "anyone with your heart, wisdom and courage can be Carmen Sandiego." Is it Carmen? Sonia? Someone we haven't met? I think both endings resonate: Caroline and I always said "Carmen is bigger than a person, Carmen is a movement" would be a great message to end the series on. And I think our ending resolves this chapter of Carmen's journey as a person, but also elevates her to mythic status. Which is why I love it!

And, that seems to me a pretty perfect question and answer to end our chat on. Thanks everyone! Again, I cannot tell you how moved I am to see that we have such a passionate, intelligent and talented fan base. THANK YOU.
