whenever people new to this fandom try and figure out carmen’s age or the timeline of the show i feel like an old ex-hero who has seen the horrors and knows that this specific quest is futile
“they have tried to find the answer for many generations, young one. but all who tried didnt make it out alive, and the few that did make it were driven to madness or exhaustion - as you can see the bags under my eyes from countless sleepless nights and red string. please, child, dont make the same mistakes i did…”

My Ship Ranking:
Okay so a few warnings about this:
1-I added all the ships I could find. If there is any missing, let me know and I'll add later.
2-This is my opinion and it isn't meant to be offensive to anyone. You can agree or disagree and it's totally fine. If you wanna do your own rankings, I would love to read it.
3-It's a long post that I've been writing for weeks. I made revisions but if something passed through me and you guys notice, you can tell me.
1-Red Crackle:
Is that even a surprise to anyone? Red Crackle is my whole life and owns my entire soul lol. But jokes aside, these two are just so linked and have a foundation not even time and space can separate. Even when they're apart by circunstances, they meet again. They always comeback to one another. Duane Capizzi said in this interview Carmen and Gray "will definitely meet again":
https://youtu.be/PIjX9rGvUmk?si=4paV3k7alKrt-B4f
And I haven't seen other interviews yet but in this specific interview the person just says Duane said Carmen doesn't see Gray in a flirty light and brushes it off asking about Carulia. Then Duane just talks more about Julia's character and then says, "if it's there, it's intentional" which indicates, from what I got, that the double meaning is there, you can choose how you see and interpret it. They could have made the carulia interactions more clear and chose not to do so on purpose. So I imagine the same thing applies to Red Crackle, Carmivy, Jeantonio, etc. The show ended so now is up to us to interpretate with what we have. Even if Duane, and the whole crew of the show overall, ship something, we can ship something different. As the show is not romance focused, we can choose from what we have. And no way there's no people who ship Red Crackle among the show staff. Michael Goldsmith(Gray's voice actor) seemed to ship. This guy seems to as well(not sure tho) considering the way he directed the holy trinity of Red Crackle episodes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gray's character is fundamental for Carmen to be the person she is. Can you picture Carmen jumping from the plane with El Topo, Le Chevre or Tigress? She trusted only Gray enough to do that. Without him she wouldn't have jumped, and would not realize what V.I.L.E. truly is about. And if so, a lot later, maybe too late. And at the end, they could have chosen Devineaux, Zari, Julia, or even Ivy to save Carmen with the A.C.M.E. machine. I think it would be kinda nice if it were Ivy so she would have an interaction with evil Carmen, like Zack had at the ferris wheel, and would impress A.C.M.E. instead of just randomly joining it with Zack out of nowhere at the end. But I'm glad it was Gray and then Shadowsan finished the job. The thing that gets to me is that she looks to the crackle rod on the floor and screams:"Gray!". The person she always prioritized the safety of the most was "dead", by her. Then she asks what has she done and I think here she could have also shown some concern for Devineaux and Julia. Specially Julia. Because Devineaux was there, standing, and depending on the impact of the thing that fell on her head, she could have died. And she seemed to faint under a curtain that also could kill her by asphyxiation if she didn't wake up on time. But the only thing she cared about was Gray. She could have remembered on screen she hurt other people too by seeing the crackle rod, but she only remembered Gray and I was like:"But what about Julia? Aren't you worried about her? Carmen is not gonna care about her at all? Really?" "That's it? That's the ending?" I believe that if there was no red crackle shipper there, the show would be a lot different. Gray's character wouldn't be so important as it was if that was the case. Speaking of which, I want a red crackle week because I never participated in one and I want to write an AU about what would have happened if Gray decided do join Team Red on the train to Paris and on the Himalayans and red crackle week is the perfect excuse for that. Also one if Carmen decided to go back to V.I.L.E. on the train to Paris to destroy them from the inside. If we have a Red Crackle Week it could be in December with a Christmas-themed vibe, @redcrackle-week ? Christmas is my favorite holiday and Red Crackle is one of my favorite ships, perfect combination.
2-Carmivy:
Again, no surprises. I've got nothing to say about this two that I haven't said before. They are so in love and they have my heart. I'll never understand why they are so underrated, they deserve more appreciation.
3-Jeantonio:
It's almost a crime that they aren't first place, but they were so close. They are like, the only ship the whole entire fandom agrees it's canon and I got mad respect for them for being able to unite the shipers because everyone likes them and wants to protect them(specially El Topo). They were clearly dating and were romantic boyfriends and I would do pretty much almost anything for them.
4-Cleobellum:
The same thing with Jeantonio, they are just a little bit lower because they don't have the general consent and less moments but to me they are a married couple.
5-Chasari/Zarineaux:
I think they would be the greatest girlboss and malewife ever. Devineaux is a dumbass but he would be Zari's dumbass. The little they interacted I could tell they would be an amazing couple. I just can see it. I can picture all their interactions perfectly in my head. When Zari fell into his arms, and the way Devineaux held her. Zari telling Devineaux not to be in her way and slowly getting softer to him with time, like, they would be such a good storyline. I wanted them together so badly so they deserve this place at my top 5.
6-Chasulia:
These two are a little bit lower because I'm not sure about them. At the start, they are a definite no. But after the fourth season Devineaux was prasing Julia the way she deserves to be praised and treating her better, redeeming for his past actions towards her and actually listening to her. He admited that he was wrong with Julia and did better. They are such adorable dorks together and while I love them as a platonic ship, I feel like they could also work romantically. It would be an interesting plot. I feel like most people think romance and friendship can't coexist but it can and it should. These two combined are one of the factors that make a good and healthy relationship and I feel like Devineaux and Julia have potential to be that way. I would like to know more about their Interpol days like why they were partnered together and how did they got to Carmen Sandiego, etc. So because of their wholesome platonic relationship that may or may not be affected my romance, they are a little bit lower but they are amazing and I love them.
7-CarChase:
This one, I did not expect to be this high up. First, the ship name is just as funny as "Red Crackle". Carmen and Devineaux did have quite a few number of car chases. Second, I'm aware that they have a 12 years age gap but I have a pretty high tolerance for age gaps. While I would rather not have an age gap too big for romantic relationships, 17 years age gap or less I don't mind. It bothers me a little, but it's not that big of a deal. If it's 18 years or more, it bothers me because I go like:"They could be their dad/mom." I just think they would be so funny together. The idea of them is surprisingly good. It makes me laugh when I think of Coach Brunt calling him handsome and Carmen being so done and after maybe going like:"He ain't ugly"(Carmen Sandiego is that kind of show that the animation is so pretty nothing and no one is ugly). And Carmen not wanting to see Devineaux because it's "really not a good time" and then seeying him even more to the point she doesn't mind it and even starts appreciating it. They would be a hell of enemies to friends to lovers story. They interact more than Carulia, but not as much as Chasulia so seventh place sounds about right for them. Not my favorite but I approve.
8-SpinTrap/FlyKick:
I don't know what their official ship name is but they are assigned partners and that, by V.I.L.E. standards, for me, usually means they make out. I wanted more development for both of their characters, which we don't know much about, so eighth place sounds nice. They clearly work well together and have a great harmony so I would say they are a cheaper version of Red Crackle. Like: "Kid:Mom, I want Red Crackle. Mom:We have Red Crackle at home." And they are the Red Crackle at home in question. Still, it works. Of course they are nothing compared to Red Crackle, but they still work. In the, idk three times we saw Spin Kick and Flytrap, you can tell they have the chemestry to convince people they are a romantic couple so this place is well deserved for them.
9-Dokusan:
No, you haven't read wrong, it means Shadowsan and Lady Dokuso. Just hear me out:I can picture it perfectly:They meet at V.I.L.E. academy, they fall in love, they start dating. But then, Shadowsan is promoted to a member of the faculty, a position Lady Dokuso also wanted, but she was happy for her boyfriend anyway. Then, it ends up not working out a faculty member dating a mere operative and then they break up but still love each other, but their relationship was full of ups and downs and they are both bitter and salty about it. Then, Shadowsan backfires V.I.L.E. and joins Team Red and Lady Dokuso can finally have a chance as a faculty member but at the cost of destroying Shadowsan. The drama, the angst, the complexity of loving each other but being different and being in two sides that can't collide or meet in the middle. If you stop to think about it, they are basically a toxic version of Red Crackle that went wrong(Yes, I use Red Crackle as a parameter to measure other couples because they are the standard). So why are they so high up? Because a sad ending love story can also work. Representativity matters and tragic love stories deserve to have some spotlight sometimes.
10-PaperTiger:
It wouldn't be me if these two didn't make it to the top 10. I know Paper Star is a psycho so she can't actually feel love or empathy for anyone other then herself, but hooking up without commitment works for these two. It would also hold some drama like:Paper Star and Tigress start being passive aggressive to each other, then they start being assigned to even more and more missions together and get to know each other better, Tigress falls in love for Paper Star and Paper Star starts caring for her a little bit more than the others and they start confiding in each other and telling things about themselves they wouldn't tell anyone else, and they try a secret relationship because Tigress accepted Paper Star's condition, but they end up not working out because of the V.I.L.E. work and the missions that they put in first place other than the relationship because they aren't El Topo and Le Chevre, unlike them, Tigress and Paper Star have other priorities and other things to worry about than each other. As you can see, I really love some angst, and they had the chemestry for that. Their versatility could also hold some fluff and funny moments like:Tigress judging Jeantonio for cuddling then doing the exact same thing with Paper Star, Tigress saying Paper Star isn't that bad to them(she is bad to everyone else tho, she would only be "soft", in her strange way, for Tigress), them trying each other's clothes and weapons, them teaching each other stuff, going out on dates, they would be V.I.L.E.'s IT couple like evil Carmen and Crackle were people, there's no way around it.

Continuing with my plans about Carmen Sandiego:
Next year will mark 5 years since its premiere. And truly as an illustrator, I really admire all the work behind the series. I'm seriously thinking about talking to Duane Capizzi and Chromosphere and whoever I can (if anyone knows who, please, inform me). What for the moment I think can be done is to show the IMMENSE interest of not only fans, but also people. from the artistic medium and series development show support.
How you can help me at this moment?
Please, in this publication write how much you would like to have Carmen Sandiego's Artbook and/or how it would help you in your career as an illustrator/animator or any area within animation in the who are working/studying/interested. I want to show all this information to Duane and whoever is needed. I will do everything I can to make it happen (and in case it can't, well, at least we did everything we could and we didn't leave with the intention of having tried) Please, if possible, inform everyone who they can. I will also report this on Twitter. If you have other social media where you think someone might be interested, share it too.
Thank you for reading!

Silly question but
The show frames both as the answer:
It is referred as "amnesia" by carmen and only as "mind wipe" by vile, only refrencing memory, during most of the show's run from s1 and s2. Dr bellum refers to it as only such during the Australia episode to le chevre.
But showrunner (writer??) Duane capizzi refers to graham being "good guy" gray, vile later talks abt the mind wipe's capabilities of personality changes (as confirmed by gray during s4 ep4), and graham experiences a direct split in identity during ep 2+3, one with a clear moral conscious and one taking every criminal option there
not to mention graham's need to distinguish his name from gray, something gray with full memories never corrects
I had already expressed my exasperations with what feels like a later retcon to devaluing gray's potential morality if he hadnt joined vile. But i am curious abt anyone actually preferring the second option sees in how it adds to gray's character
To clarify this isnt regarding whats canon, its abt prefrence lol

Adam Gets World's No.1 Worst Peepaw Shirt (2024)
-------
[Note: Please Click On The Drawing To Make It Bigger In Order To Read The Purple Words Better On Peepaw Adam's Shirt, and the speech bubbles from those who are speaking.
and incase it might still be a bit hard to read what Peepaw-Adam is saying here is what he is saying in the drawing: "What does this shirt say..? I can't read it Upside-Down. it was a Gift from a "Earth Angel Princess" who calls herself "The Eveningstar Princess" Whatever that means. but she is my Alternate Counterpart's Descendant-Granddaughter, who is also a Descendant of both Cain & Seth, as well as King David and King Solomon as well as King Solomon's Son, Rehoboam. man, sucks to be her, how unlucky is she to be the descendant of King Solomon! but at least she can be thankful to be My descendant! well, that OTHER me's own descendant anyway. man, the words on this shirt is VERY long, it must talk about how AWESOME I am."....despite what he might think, it doesn't talk about how Awesome he is. XD lol ]

Credit for Cuphead goes to Studio-MDHR
Credit for Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt goes to Gainax
Credit for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts goes to Radford Sechrist & Bill Wolkoff
----------
I regret nothing...
and I think Ficto-Peepaw Adam deserves that shirt.
Cuphead is trying not to laugh, and Steven knows how bad it will be if Adam finds out what that shirt says, possibly thanks to Garnet's future vision.
also, I like idea of Knockout being Steven's Cybertronian Guardian and Knockout could of started out as Steven's Guardian when Steven was just a baby, and it being Rose who was the first out of the Crystal Gems and Other Humans besides Greg in Beach City that saw the good in Knockout, and Garnet was the second to see the good in him and Amethyst was the third but it took Pearl a lot longer to fully trust Knockout.
also Kipo in this, is a future version who still has part of her new hair style from the epilogue but this version of Kipo grew her hair longer and might be around her mid-20s and is married to a unknown spouse.
Sari in this drawing is 23 years old but close to becoming 24 years.
or she could already be 24 years old.
and yes, I am the "Eveningstar Princess" and "Earth Angel Princess" who gave that Adam the shirt. XD
I am Cain & Seth's Weird Descendant Granddaughter, Long Live The Divine Feminine Revolution and for it's Healing and Recovery!
we should put a protective barrier around the Earth to stop the Negative and Toxic energy from the Toxic-Masculine energy through, and only allow the positive Masculine energy through.
it might be able to help both Omni-Mom and the Divine Feminine heal even more if all Earth Angels worked together to form a protective barrier so that the Feminine part of the Earth can heal properly...and the whole two certain Masculine sides crossing the line with their fight is not helping in the recovery process.
Lucifer and Samael still ain't the boss of me, no matter which one of them is Cain's Dad...
also even if not everyone has to agree to it but respect my new view of belief...
but I'm still going to believe in both God/Heavenly-Father & Goddess/Earthly-Mother...
and I rather not have some Toxic-Religious jerk from before, make me feel really bad and cry and throw those misused words they threw me before...I'm still gonna hope I don't run into that Toxic-Religious Jerk again...that still might count as religious trauma, which could be second to any past life Toxic-Religious Trauma...
I guess it was a little surprised that fans were right about that Adam from Hazbin Hotel, being THE Adam...which means he is like a Alternate Counterpart of the one that was from here...
which still makes that Adam from Hazbin Hotel, "The First Peepaw"
don't know if Cain will appear in that series or what he would be like.
but no matter the Multiverse, he is still Grunkle-Grandpa, along with Seth being Grunkle-Grandpa...at least the descendants they had married each other many generations later...is that correct...?
they don't need to be marrying too close to the tree...
the descendants of the early generations that were descended from Seth and Cain, would have to have different DNA from another Paternal and Maternal source and they would have to still marry into different bloodlines to different humans in order for the descendants of both Seth and Cain back then, were to marry each other...because it would mean they would be hardly be closely related so there will be no possible problems with the future offspring.
which I'm glad to be a "Purple Blood" rather than a "Blue Blood", yeah being a "Blue Blood" is like another word for Royalty but given that is true, but I'm glad that some of my Ancestors are both Royal and Non-Royals, and I don't want to be called a blue blood, but instead a purple blood. :)
also even if ya can look to the situation with Cain and who his bio-dad is, either it be Samael or Lucifer, and it being like the same situation in a Hazbin Hotel AU's Fanon Timeline....with Adam being the Step-Dad of Cain...
it would still make for a good Jerry Springer comedy, but instead of Jerry, it's some guy named Perry who has to talk to both Eve and the possible fathers of Cain, and even have the Step-Dad Adam there as well...
I wouldn't be surprised if Adam and Eve from Hazbin Hotel are divorced, like for all we know, Eve could of left him like around early 202X.
Adam could act like it never happen and could be in denial that both of his two ex-wives Lilith and Eve left him...
which would serve that Peepaw Adam right, that's what you get for being a selfish, egoistical, toxic-masculine jerk.
I think it could be interesting if it turn out Cain and Charlie were half-siblings, which would mean that Lucifer from that series was with Eve first before he and Lilith fell in love...
like Eve and Lucifer had to have a mutual break-up, because they knew they couldn't truly be together because one of the reasons being Adam...and at some point Lucifer meets Lilith, falls in love again, but for all we know Lucifer could still have feelings for Eve as well.
and yeah, like the shirt that Adam is wearing points out...
Abel should not be around Fluffy-Babies, and if ever tried that "offering" stuff with my first or second cats (my first cat is no longer with us and had passed away a few years ago, and I was lucky to get my second cat when they were still a little kitten.) I would go Feral Earth Angel on him.
and like I said before, if those at the vet did anything wrong with my second cat or like if they weren't taken there on time...
if I had the power to, I would start Omnigeddon...
like in theory it is like Armageddon but FAR and way worse...
lucky it might not be thing...but yeah the thoughts of wanting to start Omnigeddon did come to my mind if anything bad happen to my second cat when they had to go to the vet and they had to have surgery.
also there could be better ways to spiritually offer food even if it is meat to like both the Heavenly-Father & Earthly-Mother...
like having to cook it, and serve it with fruits and vegetables and eating it with friends and family...
and also spiritually sharing it with both the Heavenly-Father and Earthly-Mother...
and yeah, I'm still going to view both Abel and Cain being in the wrong, but Cain only got far worse because of bad parenting and his depression getting far worse and reaching a very dangerous breaking point...
and if anyone needs to be redeem at Charlie's Hotel, it's both Cain and Abel.
oh, and yes Steven is holding a cellphone to talk to Knockout and one could view that Steven is whispering so Adam doesn't hear him.
anyway hope some like this Crossover Fanart.
and once again, when it comes to giving Ficto-Peepaw Adam that shirt, I still regret nothing. XD

"Carmen Sandiego": An Enthralling Animated Series [Part 1]
Tumblr media
An orphan girl from Buenos Aires is raised to be a master thief. When she learns that the villains who raised her are thieves, she flees and vows to take them down.
This article was originally meant for The Geekiary. I submitted the article in mid-August 2022, on August 16, and it got sent back for edits, and even after a long conversation with one of the editors, including re-submitting the article a second time, I decided to publish it on my own (see original post for details) It was published on my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 2, 2023.
Carmen Sandiego is an animated action-adventure series with comedy, mystery, and drama elements. Television producer Duane Capizzi developed this Carmen Sandiego franchise reboot. The series premiered on January 18, 2019. It ran for four seasons - 32 episodes and one interactive special. The series finale aired on January 15, 2021.
As a warning, this recommendation discusses some spoilers for the four seasons of Carmen Sandiego.
youtube
Carmen Sandiego centers around notorious international thief Carmen Sandiego. She is a fictional character who first appeared in the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Deluxe 1992 video game. This iteration is completely different. She is Argentinian and possibly Mexican. Gina Rodriguez, a renowned actress with Puerto Rican heritage, voices her.
In the first few episodes, we learn about Carmen's upbringing as "Black Sheep" on VILE Island, headquarters of a criminal organization known as The Villains International League of Evil. To hide their true nature, they tell crime school recruits that their name stands for "Valuable Imports, Lavish Exports".
Carmen soon gets a taste of the outside world. She talked to a white-hat hacker named Player, voiced by Finn Wolfhard, through a cell phone she stole. She is further influenced after surreptitiously crashing a caper by her fellow classmates.
Like previous versions, Carmen Sandiego is squarely aimed at kids. It is smart, visually appealing, has a catchy theme song, and focuses on geography. The series is better than clunky animation in the 1990s Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? series. Eastwood Wong, who worked on Steven Universe and The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, is the art director.
Many of same characters that appear in Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? appear in this reboot, but in a different form. The show's mystery, effective writing, and thrilling storylines helps flesh out these characters.
This action-packed series has exciting chase scenes and fights, akin, in some ways, to Canaan, but not with guns. It shares similarities to the classic 2000s series, Kim Possible. Carmen, like Kim, can be a role model, since she has a chosen family and is on a journey of self-discovery.

Okay I've only just been made aware of the ass discourse (happened to to check the tag as it was winding down lol), but I feel like a lot of people are missing the obvious point here, unless I've missed it being said somewhere else.
Ya girl is LITERALLY an athlete??? She spends like half the show either running or doing handsprings, and she spent most of her formative years in a school for thieves with extensive physical training.
The muscles that make up the ass are used for stability when running/using your legs, that's what they're for. If she had no ass after spending the last four years of her life in constant life or death struggle against the crime-illuminati, I'd want to sequence her genome to find out what demon is possessing her muscular system.
SERIOUSLY. i havent provided much to the pro-ass propaganda myself yet, but that is one of my biggest reasons i believe she HAS. ASS.
yknow what? here is a quick run-down of my argument
Carmen is an athlete- we have seen her do plenty of athletic feats. When she jumps and lands with her grappling hook, girl is doing mad squats
We see that she has a gym- there is NO WAY she isnt working out with squats and stuff intentionally
Her hips are huge and in my mind it makes sense that hips correlate to ass. science may or may not back this up but i do not care
Her character design is not muscular, even though it would make so much more sense for her to be. Her arms should be buff as shit, but the animators dont draw her that way. She SHOULD have ass- but sometimes she isn't animated that way. so making a judgement just by looking may be flawed
Duane Capizzi has stated in the past that they have done revisions in scenes to make Carmen's body look different because he didnt want to sexualize her / make it easy to sexualize her, which I can respect. shes hot as fuck tho
I've seen some claim that her ass is all thigh and hips. first of all: no. and second of all: no (because of the aforementioned workout)
I want her to have some serious ass okay? sue me

what’s this live broadcast i’m hearing about that upset red crackle shippers?
Apparently the CS showrunner, Duane Capizzi, had an interview over instagram with someone from Let’s Talk Cartoons where he discussed the show for about an hour and a half.
I haven’t watched it myself yet (I don’t have a link on hand but if I find it I’ll share), but I’ve heard a basic rundown and apparently he confirmed a few things, but completely danced around ships (he said ‘if you see it, it was intentional’ but that applies to all ships, it wasn’t specific to Carulia or any one ship) except Jeantonio apparently, which was stated that they intended their relationship to be read as romantic.
The thing that got a bee in RC bonnets though was that he said he didn’t think Gray was ‘good enough’ for Carmen, but he also apparently confirmed that Gray did have romantic feelings for her, was flirting with her post-brainwashing, and that they definitely met again post-canon, so honestly? I’m not too worried. Like, I’ve dealt with my otp canonically marrying other ppl and having kids w them, so I can handle a little ‘it was one-sided during the show, but you can interpret it however you like, and they will meet again afterwards’.
From the sound of it, he wasn’t focused on romance in any respect--that just wasn’t the story he was trying to tell--and so the ships that we came up with as a fandom are equally as valid. Again, the only one that I think was given ‘canon validity’ by the interview is Jeantonio, which honestly is a good thing bc that’s the only ship this fandom can agree on lmfao

Ship Analysis pt.2.
RedCrackle, CarmIvy and Carulia.
So, I decided to divide it in parts because we'll have to analyze Gray's character a little bit to understand Red Crackle more. I think this is going to have five parts or something because when I try to post things too long Tumblr goes all error and stuff. And I got a lot to say about Red Crackle.
Okay, to start, I haven't read the novel but I heard that there has some scenes of the novel that conflicts with canon. And I looked for Duane Capizzi saying that and couldn't find it. Second of all, this person seems to don't understand what is Gray's purpose at all. He's that interesting yet misterious unpredictable morally gray character. He's not truly good or truly evil, he's that one character we never know which side he's going to take. Both A.C.M.E and V.I.L.E.(specifically the personification of each, Chief and Maelstrom) talking about "seeing the world in shades of gray" while Gray in on the screen proves that. He never seems to fully embrace completely one of the sides until the very ending of the show. Even when he sticks to V.I.L.E. the good in him still shows. He's the second most sweetheart operative V.I.L.E. ever had(only loses to El Topo). Third thing is when Carmen and Player are talking about it Carmen says that Gray tried to "blow her out like a birthday candle" and when you blow a birthday candle, you can light it up again. Fourth:at the conversation they have on the train, Carmen says:"V.I.L.E. wants me stealing FOR them instead of FROM them" so why would Gray kill her if that's not what V.I.L.E. wants? V.I.L.E. wants her alive, on their side, and we know how V.I.L.E. manipulates their agents to do what they want. Besides Paper Star, I don't think we seen any other agent disobey V.I.L.E. Anyway, for me it doesn't make sense, and I always understood he wanted to make her unconscious and take her back to V.I.L.E. Perhaps V.I.L.E. said :"Convince her and if she doesn't want to, kill her." but I don't get why they would say that since they could just mind wipe her like they did at the finale but then again a lot of things about V.I.L.E.(and on this show overall) don't make sense but it adds a certain charm to it I guess, lol. But canon or non canon that he tried to kill her or not, even Carmen defended him saying he did that on "direct orders of V.I.L.E. which he doesn't seem to remember exists anymore." So if Carmen herlself forgave him, why can't you? I particularly like to think he would have stopped saying he couldn't do it, like we see him doing afterwards in the Himalayans. I like to believe that's the kind of person he is because homeboy listened to her telling almost the whole entire story of her life, when he didn't have to(my personal theory is that he was trying to avoid the moment the most that he could). And when he says "bye black sheep", the camera focus on Carmen saying:"You weren't listening, I go by Carmen now." with the crackle rod on, in front of her. He could have made it quick, but he hesitated. Intentionally or not, he gave Carmen the time to say that and fight back because he lowered his guard down. So these are some signals that, to me, indicate he wouldn't have finished the job, but you can believe whatever you want. The point is that he didn't knew V.I.L.E. would throw him away in an instance. He clearly looked confused before having his mind wiped.
Not much to add anymore. The apparent blandness of him as Graham Calloway is called "wasted potential". They could've done so much with Graham before he was Crackle again. Anyway, done for today. Part 3 is coming soon.

I put together a transcript of the 2 hour Q&A Interview the Carmen Sandiego Discord did with Showrunner Duane Capizzi. All of the questions were submitted by server members. You can read everything below the break!
Duane Capizzi:
Hi there!
Am I in? Is this thing on?
PizzaHorse:
Hi, welcome!
Yep, you're in the right place!
Duane Capizzi:
Sorry I'm late, I was wandering around some empty Discord hallways looking for the right room haha
PizzaHorse:
No worries. Let's get started!
Who is your favorite character?
Duane Capizzi:
Moose Boy!
KIDDING!
Alright, how to NOT get myself in trouble if my answer isn't "Carmen" haha.
But really, they are ALL my babies.
So I know it's going to sound like a cop out to some that I can't pick just one. But hmm, some for instances...
I love that she's so morally evolved at such a young age; her ability to always take the high road and never lower herself; her drive and conviction and dedication. Her ability to kick serious booty and look good while doing it. Her progressive values, her fashion sense. I could go on and on. But then there's Shadowsan and his arc; Chase and his. Julia, who's every bit as strong as Carmen but shows it in different ways. The Cleaners don't get enough love.
I'll close that question with an anecdote about The Cleaners ...
I love that all our characters are embraced and that everyone seems to have favorites. Our sound engineer Marcel is a pretty serious guy: he has a serious job that takes high levels of focus and attention. He's always deeply focused and not prone to small talk. Anyway, we were in the middle of our first or second sound mix, and he suddenly stops in the middle and turns around to face us. I'm thinking, "uh oh, we're giving too many notes." That's when I notice he's freeze framed the Cleaners. He says "I really like these guys." Then he turns around, hits play and gets back to work.
PizzaHorse:
What was the biggest challenge for coming up with new stories and plot for the reboot?
Duane Capizzi:
THE biggest? Sigh. I'm not sure I could come up with just one. Plotting is always challenging and we had the brain trust of the room, our trusty white board, and writer assistant to keep the threads of the ongoing storyline together. I think the single biggest ONGOING challenge was tracking which character knew what at any given time.
The caper part was challenging - coming up with new capers and keeping them interesting and fresh. But, it was the characters and their interactions that kept things fresh and interesting. Another museum heist? That's okay - Chase is on the case and he gets to interact with "X" this time (for instance).
There were also some episodes - Duke of Vermeer and Crackle Goes Kiwi come to mind - where there was SO MUCH SET UP needed to get the payoffs to work. I was really worried about too much talk/too much detail. Very "Swiss watch!" It took a lot of work to make sure it all clicked and was clear - hopefully it seems effortless on screen but I can't say there wasn't some sweat and the occasional tear (mostly from me - I'm a big cry baby
But really, what made it fun was that we had so many buckets to draw from: sometimes a story germ initially began with a character idea; sometimes it was inspired by global location; sometimes it was a clever way to update or reimagine an idea from old Carmen lore. Usually, it was some combination of all of the above!
PizzaHorse:
What was your favorite scene to write?
Duane Capizzi:
I think we have a theme here! "How can I pick just one ...?"
As a film buff, I got to indulge in some serious fan nerdery on this show: I got to write spy movies, yakuza movies, spaghetti neo-westerns (though turning it on its head: spaghetti westerns usually involve REVENGE and because of Carmen's character make up, this was sort of anti-revenge).
Is writing coming up with the idea or typing it? Haha. An "if a tree falls in the forest" question. The writing team and I had so many cathartic "that's how it goes" in the room. But on my own, writing the Pilot, was a very inspiring time for me: I remember laughing out loud the moment I thought of Chase falling on his own car (in part because of doing my spin on "that trope" that we've seen in so many hard boiled movies recently). But also how emotional I got when I imagined the simple but potent image of Black Sheep deciding to take her destiny into her own hands and walk that long corridor to the Faculty who we were about to meet for the first time.
I think I've cited this in another interview, but there was a period where I was completely immersed in Chase's arc and the scene where he would crack the location of VILE island ... by listening to Julia in a dream ... was a big one for me. It revealed he was finally open to admitting he needed Julia more than he would ever admit - yet, it was his own subconscious speaking.
The next morning, after cracking that scene, I bumped into Raf Petardi (voice of Chase) ... at the supermarket! It was very strange and hilarious
PizzaHorse:
Did you scrap any lengthy or funny scenes that you would be able to share?
Duane Capizzi:
With few exceptions, most scene cuts are done at the script stage so that the story board team doesn't waste effort over boarding. A variety of trims to any script are common, but they are usually for the better
The easier question to answer might be scenes were part of our "wish list" at writer room stage, but never made it to story or script. I hesitate to go too deep here (in the event that we might ever do more Carmen episodes in this canon - I'm not giving up hope). And there were cases where things we wanted to do earlier in the series wound up getting nixed or not fitting for whatever reason, but we got them in later - USUALLY FOR THE BETTER. So there's sort of a reverse Murphy's Law/rule of good fortune somehow in these things. But some fun things that didn't make it into the show, that leap to mind were: a Bollywood dance sequence (!). A Vegas caper involving Brunt wanting to steal an Elvis jumpsuit against the backdrop of an Elvis impersonator convention. We also thought it would be neat to get Maelstrom imprisoned so that Julia could interrogate him and he would play mind games with her - very Lector/Clarice!
PizzaHorse:
Were there any different treatments of Carmen you pitched before settling on the one we ended up with?
Duane Capizzi:
I was one of several "pitches" that I'm sure HMH heard before running with my version. But I can honestly say I've never pitched anything as fully formed: the take on Carmen felt so right to me, and clearly HMH and by extension Netflix agreed
I'll answer your question with an anecdote: I had the entire Pilot pretty well worked out, and pitched it in the first meeting. But one key thing that changed (much for the better!), simply because it wouldn't have fit without slogging things down ...
In my Pilot pitch, Black Sheep's escape on the boat was off screen: we see Shadowsan corner her, then we cut away. The rest of the Faculty show up to find SS's broken sword on the rocks, and are led to believe BS killed him (!). In the present, Crackle points his weapon at Carmen and prepares to pull the trigger. We know that Chase is on the way and may rescue her. The compartment door opens to reveal - not Chase - but Shadowsan! Big surprise! Then we cut back to BS's escape and find out what really transpired etc etc.
Crazy, right? SS would have been hanging out with the gang in season 1; we might not have gotten to 203 with his back story, since his sword was broken and he couldn't return it. Just one of those magical things where "things work out" the way they are supposed to. THAT SAID, it made for a heckuva pitch
PizzaHorse:
Are there any characters that ended up taking a direction you didn't initially anticipate?
Duane Capizzi:
GRAY.
I didn't know we'd make him amnesiac when I wrote the Pilot, that was something we came up with in our first week Writer Room.
And even then, when it became clear he'd be a key piece of the bigger puzzle, we didn't know how exactly (mostly the Season 4 stuff).
We did get very deep with a version where 404 ended with his protective streak for Carmen kicking into high gear, and they would be fighting off Vile Guards back to back in perfect tandem. Then, having chosen Carmen over VILE, it was Carmen who actually orchestrates Gray going "off grid" so that VILE can never find him again. Funny, I know that is arguably the version of Gray's arc that many fans might have preferred seeing. But in the tradition of spy thrillers and film noir, and for a lone wolf character like Carmen who is focused on her life mission and not romance, we stand behind where we went with him. We felt it was so much more compelling ... and truly more emotional that he totally has a get out of jail free card when he sacrifices everything (including his life, potentially) to save Carmen.
when she needs him most!
I know I made some controversial comments about Gray "not being good enough for Carmen" and I'd like to clarify that I meant, until that final episode. What he did was so selfless and heroic. Is there hope for them in the future? Who knows?! But I do hope we get to explore that one day
I'm sure Gray is living off the grid somewhere now, inspired by Carmen's selfless good and thinking of her from time to time.
PizzaHorse:
You mentioned in the interview with Alicyn that Carmen is a love story, but you were cut off before you could finish discussing. Could you elaborate on your answer now?
Duane Capizzi:
Ugh, yes! Sorry about that. I actually answered that privately for someone so will cut and paste that response here. Let's see if it works.
Something we never said in the show, but something I imparted to the creative team was: Carmen Sandiego is (among other things) a LOVE STORY, where every character in our ensemble is in love with Carmen in one way or another. Even if they don't know it! That love can take different forms: we see how spurned by Carmen Coach Brunt feels and why she retaliates so excessively. Chase eventually comes to realize that he too loves Carmen, even if he wasn't initially aware of it haha. One of the most moving things to me about the series is how all of the different factions come to Carmen's rescue at the end when she's not "in her right mind," without knowing the others are there too. It's a massive group effort to bring back the Carmen they love. But we weren't looking for a fairy tale ending for Carmen with ANYone - Carmen's a classic lone wolf anti-hero, that goes with the territory. At least at this stage in her journey.
PizzaHorse:
Were there other locations that you wanted to feature in the show that didn't make it?
Duane Capizzi:
I think we managed to cover a lot of ground and "cadence" between different countries/cultures/continents was important to us. Many "iconic" locations of course, and it would have been nice to explore some lesser known locations if we had more episodes.
One that we almost did was Niagara Falls, Canada - actually literally going to the Falls and doing a big hydro-electric caper, where Player could actually get into the field with Carmen and the team.
But ultimately, we wound up bringing Player into the fold the way we did and wound up stronger as a result. It made his "first face to face" with Carmen even more impactful, IMO.
PizzaHorse:
Were there any changes in production between the first half and the second half of the series?
Duane Capizzi:
Well, there was that Covid thing
But while it was no doubt a colossal undertaking to get the entire staff transitioned to work from home (animators! and their equipment!), we managed to make up for lost time WITHOUT a dip in animation quality. My fedora's off to our amazing team at Wildbrain for pulling it off!
We did lose some staff between orders, but that is a natural part of production unfortunately. Namely, one of our episodic directors Kenny Park, our first storyboard artist Dennis Crawford, and our story editor May Chan were among those who moved on to other shows during the break. But, as hard as their shoes were to fill, fill them we did!
PizzaHorse:
What is your favorite season?
Duane Capizzi:
Easy. Hands down, Season 3.
(crickets)
KIDDING!
Again, another "they're all my babies" answer (and yes, I love Season 3 equally
It's hard, because really when you step back I'm sure you'll agree it's a series, with stand alone capers; but it's really all ONE BIG MOVIE.
Season 3 is like the scherzo of a symphony: the shortest movement of four, and the one that tees up the big finale.
That's my hoity toity answer but I'm going to put to rest all of the various theories on what happened with season 3. It was a combination of two things: Netflix's desire to experiment with different ways of "dropping" seasons, and their desire to do a holiday themed drop (in this case Halloween, naturally). It became our challenge to come up with a theme (easy enough: masks), and the bigger challenge to serve their need while not interrupting our ongoing narrative. A challenge to be sure, but a challenge met. I think the biggest bump was perception: it was a short season and I know that was disappointing to many. But, by design.
So, Season 3 = an essential part of the whole. I don't think there's a wasted episode, and it gets everyone into position for the big finish. I can't pick a favorite season - you can't make me
PizzaHorse:
Were there any characters you had wanted to give more time to but couldn't due to time/plot restraints?
Duane Capizzi:
Well, there's the "what was on the white board" answer but hopefully some of those ideas will see the light of day in some way, shape or form some day. I think if we had more episodes, we would have shaken up the internal dynamic of VILE a bit more (as hinted at Brunt's displeasure with Maelstrom for leaving her hanging out to dry at end of 405 - a seed we planted "just in case," as some have noted). And we had more scenes in mind with Chase's partnering with Carmen for the first time that we had to cut to the bone because of what little room we had in that otherwise packed episode (worry not: it's mostly more gags, more embellishment, more twists and turns - but the important stuff is there). Mostly, and I don't think it would have been right for Season 4 but I hope to tell in the future, I think there's an interesting history between Shadowsan and Lady Dokuso - possibly tragic - that I would love to explore one day. (She was a cameo in Duke of Vermeer at the dinner party BTW, I'm not sure if anyone noticed. And we built a bigger role for her out of that)
PizzaHorse:
What are some pre-2000/nostalgic Carmen references you snuck into the show? Do you have a favorite reference that was included?
Duane Capizzi:
Doing that was so much fun! I'd say roughly 60% of the characters were from previous iterations of Carmen, though often in name only. We had fun reimagining most everyone to make them more relevant or updated or giving them a more colorful personality for starters.
"Suhara" was Carmen's Japanese mentor when she worked at the ACME Agency in a flashback episode in the 90's series, for instance. I don't think I need to spell out how we turned that one inside out
And Tigress was also one episode only: she was a "rival thief" to Carmen, but revealed to be an ACME agent in disguise - a persona created solely to bait Carmen. It was really cool of course, but it seemed like untapped potential so we made her an ACTUAL Vile Thief.
My own internal rule was to make sure the references/easter eggs wouldn't confuse anyone - they were there for those who were in the loop and window dressing. The one and only time i broke that rule was Dark Carmen's line from 407: "I do it for the mental gymnastics." It was one of the most absurd lines from the 90's series (IMO) and i was determined to have it come out of Dark Carmen's mouth. I'm sure it left some 7 year olds scratching their heads
aside from that, the key references were the music: I still tingle at how we worked the Rockapella theme into the Interactive Special; and the 90's main title theme (composed by Mozart!), in our Vienna episode ("They're playing my song"). If you wanted Rockapella or Carmen as a bad guy, well ... be careful what you wish for!
PizzaHorse:
Was there any improvised content from recording sessions that made it into any episodes?
Duane Capizzi:
Yes! Not much, because a lot of it would have pushed us into TV-MA haha
Mostly Mary Elizabeth - Coach Brunt has a POTTY MOUTH!
Mikey and Abby usually riffed their banter WAY beyond what was on the written page and had us in stitches. Some bits definitely made it in! But mostly there was too much or it would get off point (hmmm, much like my interview answers maybe? haha)
Sharon Muthu did rise to Pun Goddess status with "Mask and you shall receive." And Raf pitched me "Chasse means hunt in French" after one session and I said: "I'm going to write that in." I don't think he believed me. You can't say I'm not a straight shooter.
PizzaHorse:
If you could get more season, would you do it, and what type of story would you tell?
Duane Capizzi:
Well if that hasn't been clear so far, ABSOLUTELY
There have been discussions of course. It's up to the powers that be at this point. I will say this: the beauty and tradition so far has been that every iteration has been its own thing. I definitely think there are more "different canon" versions of Carmen that can be had and be a part of this wonderful tradition. After all, there were many naysayers for our version when it was first announced.
I will also say that if we don't get to tell any more stories in this canon with these characters, we've left a perfect gem that will stand the test of time. I would rather go out on a high note than overstay our welcome.
All that said, we worked within the allotted episodes given, ended it as we wished, but left the door open for other stories. I'd love to do an expansion and a deepening: pick up where we left off; find out what happened in those two years; and proceed to do the equivalent of Godfather II or Better Call Saul as related to the amazing originals they followed.
Let's hope! Keep putting good vibes out there!
PizzaHorse:
If you could pick a character on Carmen Sandiego who'd you switch places with for a day (you get to control their life and they get to control yours) who would you pick, and why?
Duane Capizzi:
Okay, THIS is difficult. So you're going Freaky Friday on me?
on a Sunday?
Hmmm, I know Ivy would get along with my cat ... but then I'd have to hang out with Zack!
That's the trick: I can't pick my favorites cuz I couldn't hang out with them!
(not that I have favorites - they're all my babies haha)
Okay, I have one: ROUNDABOUT. I could fill Shadowsan's seat - how cool is that? Then, I could enact all my evil fantasies - but still have a get out of jail free card cuz he'd be sitting at my desk!
(cut to Duane being brain wiped - D'oh!)
PizzaHorse:
Who are two characters who don't really interact in the show that you think could be good friends or work really well together?
Duane Capizzi:
Hmmmm. Okay, now I'm going to give you quick and sassy answers. Gray and Julia! They'd be so cute banding together to rescue captive Carmen (for instance). And they could also duke it out and maybe settle things between themselves re: shipping controversies instead of dragging me into it
PizzaHorse:
The FINAL QUESTION. Have you learned anything super impactful while working on the show?
Duane Capizzi:
Aside from Iceland's terrifically low crime rate?
I think I have learned to never underestimate how meaningful characters can be to fans. Social media has obviously brought us a lot closer to our fan base in more immediate ways: it's been really gratifying to hear/see/read feedback and not be writing things in a vacuum. It's been gratifying to see that ideas that were meaningful to myself and the creative team on Carmen that were crafted with care, have also resonated with our fan base. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who has traveled on this journey with us - for embracing Carmen's world view, and her friends and foes alike. Take care everyone! Stay safe! This has been fun, thanks for having me!
PizzaHorse:
HUGE thank you to Duane Capizzi: for being here today.
Thank you everyone for watching and reacting!
Duane Capizzi:
Okay, gotta run - just gotta find the door
Anyway, really: THIS HAS BEEN AMAZING. I speak for everyone involved in the creation and production of Carmen: it has been an amazing and inspiring series and we're elated to see it connect with such a CREATIVE, TALENTED and INTELLIGENT fan base. Take care everyone! Until next crime...
