I just bought the most incredible book from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) titled “Young Oceanographer’s Coloring Book About The Research Vessel Neil Armstrong”. It was written by navigator and structural designer of vessels, Peter Zimmerman
Tumblr media
It’s a pretty basic book- not a lot of frills. A nice feature is that it gives a color example with each coloring page
Tumblr media
Many images are what you would probably expect. Like here we have the vessel going out to sea.
Tumblr media
But I what I love love love about this is how this book does NOT simplify for children. Here we have the mechanics of the portable water system and the instrument used to measure seawater conductivity, temperature and depth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh and just straight up floor plans of the galley and mess room.
Tumblr media
What ELSE I LOVE is that the author hid little pictures of his cat Smokey and dog Lulu for kids to find. Here we find a kitty rudder and doggy radar:

I just love when educators realize that you don’t have to “dumb down” high level concepts for young brains. Are they going to understand everything? No. But he included a glossary and given time- an interested brain will seek out context given time.
You can buy this book at the WHOI gift shop in person and online here. They have other great titles such as “Build Your Own Underwater Robot and Other Wet Projects” and “Good Night Lab”

geologist remus AU in which he has the largest rock collection known to man but it’s all granite and sandstone and other rocks that no one else thinks look cool
he has his rock hammer and his hard hat and he spends his days in stupid rural areas just looking through soil and in rivers for things he can break open or put under a microscope, and he takes samples home in his pockets even though it means there’s dirt and sand everywhere
queue sirius, who knows nothing about rocks but knows that some minerals are shiny, and he has a great time fidgeting with the pretty minerals that remus thinks are “too boring”
bonus points for remus doing a taste test on his rocks to determine what kind of minerals they are (because yes, that is a genuine way of determining mineral type)

New Mexico Footprints are Oldest Sign of Humans in Americas
Fossil footprints date back to between 21,000 and 23,000 years ago, upending previous theory that humans reached continent later.
New research confirms that fossil human footprints in New Mexico are probably the oldest direct evidence of human presence in the Americas, a finding that upends what many archaeologists thought they knew.
The footprints were discovered at the edge of an ancient lakebed in White Sands national park and date back to between 21,000 and 23,000 years ago, according to research published on Thursday in the journal Science.
Tumblr media
The estimated age of the footprints was first reported in Science in 2021, but some researchers raised concerns about the dates. Questions focused on whether seeds of aquatic plants used for the original dating may have absorbed ancient carbon from the lake – which could, in theory, throw off radiocarbon dating by thousands of years.
The new study presents two additional lines of evidence for the older date range. It uses two entirely different materials found at the site, ancient conifer pollen and quartz grains.
The reported age of the footprints challenges the once conventional wisdom that humans did not reach the Americas until a few thousand years before rising sea levels covered the Bering land bridge between Russia and Alaska, perhaps about 15,000 years ago.
“This is a subject that’s always been controversial because it’s so significant – it’s about how we understand the last chapter of the peopling of the world,” said Thomas Urban, an archaeological scientist at Cornell University, who was involved in the 2021 study but not the new one.

Thomas Stafford, an independent archaeological geologist in Albuquerque, New Mexico, who was not involved in the study, said he “was a bit skeptical before” but now is convinced.
The new study isolated about 75,000 grains of pure pollen from the same sedimentary layer that contained the footprints.
“Dating pollen is arduous and nail-biting,” said Kathleen Springer, a research geologist at the US Geological Survey and a co-author of the new paper.
Ancient footprints of any kind can provide archaeologists with a snapshot of a moment in time. While other archeological sites in the Americas point to similar date ranges – including pendants carved from giant ground sloth remains in Brazil – scientists still question whether such materials really indicate human presence.
“White Sands is unique because there’s no question these footprints were left by people, it’s not ambiguous,” said Jennifer Raff, an anthropological geneticist at the University of Kansas, who was not involved in the study.

"Geology is 90% vocabulary" feels like such a poor description of such a large, important topic, but it feels like it would solve so much if people just... had the words to describe the world.
It's so unfair to everyone that the majority of the population's understanding of the world stops at "tectonic plates", "ring of fire", and "rock cycle". It's so unfair.
Everyone deserves to go on a hike, and when the rock changes colors, wonder "what is that?" and be able to answer the question themselves. Everyone deserves to be able to fulfill their curiosity and it is such a disservice that they cannot.

Visit strange new worlds and pet... Your co-workers
OK look: Allogrooming.
We'll pet anything. Big lizard? Lemme hold it. Fur? Oh god damn yes. Feathers? So burd, much stroke. Tiny octopus with blue rings or a highly toxic nudibranch? Lemme stroke it. Even people petting giant wads of gum.
[puts finger to erpiece] ... that was a cat!? It was pink! ... Hairless you say? mm-hmm... ohh, to shreds you say?
Anyway. I've seen my mother pick up: a decorator crab , a snake, a monitor lizard, and a skunk and pet them.
The skunk was a professional. He was down with it.
Anyway. Imagine the various aliens and their assigned Human (Who's there to carry stuff and do the Human Things), and one day the Geologist comes out and her fur is perfect, and everyone is like... wait there's a fur-stylist on base?
No, but if you let the Human pet you, they'll also groom you, trim your fur, and help you get your dye job right.
And slooowly people are just standing innocently near the Human looking all tactile and groomable, and hey you know humans only have limited amounts of hair?
Did you know they use it for display? Did you know they have thousands of years of cultural history of coming up with really cool decorations?
The relief crew shows up and the on-site team just breeze past with painted feathers, dyed fur, beaded hair, Celtic patterns shaved into their fuzz - as for that one Tsin, what they've had happen to their scales? They got offers. Like serious attention.

A flat-color commission of the client’s Dragonborn geologist (plus a feathery friend)! I had a lot of fun with the big, chunky shapes in her outfit combined with the delicate little steampunk-esque details - she stays a total fashion-plate as she investigates the natural world!
