Hey! What were your favorite books/authors growing up and what are they currently if you don't mind me asking? I would love to know where you get your inspo from cause you write so pretty
hello!! ohhh.. i love this question itโ€™s so cute. thank you for the compliment and for asking! ๐Ÿ’ž apologies for my rambling heheh
growing up, i was never allowed to read mostโ€ฆ popular series because my mother went through an extremely religious phase until i was a teenager. dodged the bullet of succumbing to Harry Potter and the like, so i always found myself in the library reading the most obscure things!
i obsessively read the Deltora Quest books by Emily Rodda most of all. the covers were so sick. i canโ€™t recall which one it happened in, but when the main trio all had their toes chopped off?? i do not think 8 year old me should have been reading that, but i was obsessed with dragons as any other kid should be! it lead me to reading The Inheritance Cycle series by Christopher Paolini, too. anything fantasy that was a bit odd held my attention. The Pricker Boy by Reade Scott Whinnem, The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, and all of the Moomin books by Tove Jansson were some other favorites!
i also read a lot of fairytales (to the surprise of no one, iโ€™ll bet) and The Mabinogion. i still go back and reread those whenever i can. The White Cat is one of my many favorites!
as an adult i do not get to read much, unfortunately. so, i do sort of feel that my writing is a bit stunted at times. i was combing through a lot of Mercedes Lackeyโ€™s stuff for a little while. and recently, i finished The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock. a coworker gave me Twilight Eyes by Dean Koontz and whereas I do not care for his writing that muchโ€ฆ parts of that particular book were really intriguing to me. poetry is nice too, always, but if anyone were to ask me for a list of my favorite poets i think that i would combust <- so many things in my brain and i can not remember most unless iโ€™ve obsessively read over their work 90 times minimum sorry.
butโ€ฆ.
i think that most of my inspiration comes from music with lyrics that capture me and long bouts of daydreaming, nowadays. i also like to visit abandoned places or overgrown parks when i need a place to think or justโ€ฆ feel for ambience. my favorite places in the world right now are this huuuge swamp full of alligators with a tiny cemetery thatโ€™s at least two hundred years old (like fifteen people have died there in the last decade & i will never be one of them) and a park that houses a supposed werewolf (no matter how many treats i bring it is yet to be seenโ€ฆ painโ€ฆ but it is dreadfully silent there and a park keeper once told me โ€œwatch out!! that thing is big and super ugly!!โ€ which i think is very funny). i would not recommend doing things like that however unless you are of similar stature to me (insert chad meme) or go with a group!! do not get eaten by a giant dogman, please.
in conclusion I am NOT immune to good cover art or the appeal of pretending to be a lil knight in the old woodโ€ฆ

favorite underrated book series?
Anon when I tell you this ask got me jumping out my bed to sift through my bookshelf. Warning for a lot of words
A while back I read these old books โ€˜The adventures of the Wishing Chairโ€™ and โ€˜The Wishing Chair, againโ€™ by Enid Blyton. Theyโ€™re childrenโ€™s books, published in 1937 and 1950, respectively.
Another series Iโ€™m fairly fond of is Jessica Townsendโ€™s โ€˜Nevermoor, the Trials of Morrigan Crowโ€™ (fun fact, my copy is signed!) it follows the story of a girl cursed to die on a certain day at midnight, but a mysterious man comes to take her away to a secret city called Nevermoor, thereโ€™s three books in the series as far as Iโ€™m aware.
For younger readers (or older ones, too!), the โ€˜Friday Barnesโ€™ series by R.A Spratt follows an exceptional girl surrounded by non-exceptional people. She solves a mystery for her detective uncle and uses the prize money to send herself to an exclusive boarding school. Chaos ensues
You didnโ€™t think I was done, did you? Because Iโ€™m not.
ANOTHER great one (and I donโ€™t know how underrated it is) is Australian author Emily Woodโ€™s (AKA Jennifer Rowe) โ€˜Rowan Of Rinโ€™!! Iโ€™m pretty sure her other series โ€˜Deltora Questโ€™ is more popular (I havenโ€™t read it) but I do own a large hardback of all five Rowan stories shoved into one book. It follows a timid farmer boy forced to go on a journey up a mountain to save his village
Anon you have awakened a beast in me. Unfortunately I am a fucking nerd, always have been and I love books to death (even if I donโ€™t touch one for months) and am prepared to talk about it for hours.
In conclusion: I donโ€™t have a particular favourite I do, however, have a collection of series that I love that youโ€™ve maybe never heard of.
And you can ignore this part if you want to because now Iโ€™m just prattling about the Authors:
So R.A Spratt is an Australian author, also responsible for โ€˜Hamlet is not okay!โ€™, which surprised me because I know that book but I didnโ€™t know it was by her! Wow
Townsend is also Australian, but she doesnโ€™t really have any books beyond Nevermoor. And actually, Iโ€™m noticing a trend, because Emily Rodda is also Australian. Makes sense, because Iโ€™m Australian, of course Iโ€™d be reading Australian authors.
Anyway Theo is a fucking nerd thanks byeee

๐Ÿฅ! For the ask meme.
๐Ÿฅ Who are your literary influences, and have they shaped your own writing?
Ooh this is a great question; I always find it a little harder to answer, since I read at such a massive breadth and depth for the majority of my time as a reader, it can be hard to narrow down where exactly I got my influences from. In terms of the authors I can identify as actively contributing to my style, though - as in, I looked at how they did what they did and went yep, gonna go ahead and incorporate that into my hippocampus - I'd have to go with Emily Rodda, Maggie Stiefvater and Leigh Bardugo.
(To a small extent, I'd also throw GRRM on that list, if only because he cracked open my third eye as to how effective, and wonderful, numerous POVs are in a story. But I don't think he contributed as much to my actual writing style itself.)
Emily Rodda is one of the few authors whose work I have consistently read since I was little - she informed a massive amount of my love for fantasy and genre fiction. Her works represented one of the first times I actively went after books unrelated to the ones I was already a fan of, purely because she wrote them. The way she writes is so effective in capturing the interest of both children and adults that it's basically impossible to not want to emulate it. She also helped in developing my skill for very chewable scenery. Her way of weaving together settings is wonderful, and I'm glad younger me had the opportunity to mimic and learn from that style.
Maggie Stiefvater and Leigh Bardugo fall into kind of the same category for me - I learned from their styles because their novels were what I loved as I was starting to ramp up my actual desire to write. The Raven Cycle especially helped with that - twisty prose and intricately laid tone were both things I don't think I ever had nailed down before reading that series. All credit to you, Maggie. Leigh Bardugo I learned a lot from in the way of character work, and I think the way I introduce backstory or flashback moments is very similar to hers. Imitation is the highest form of flattery? (I sure hope so.)
Nowadays I'm taking more cues from V.E. Schwab, Ruta Sepetys and M.L. Rio, and trying to expand out what genres I read to add a few more to the list. I feel like, though it aids me a lot when I do write genre fiction, I really need to move past my never-ending fantasy phase. But I've definitely taken on a lot of my favourite authors as influences; hopefully usually for the better!
My deepest apologies for the word vomit there, but thank you so much for the ask!!! Hope I didn't make your brain melt with all the yelling (and if you have any author recommendations, I beg, throw them my way) <333
Ask game is here.

Okay, I'm really curious about this: what would you say your favourite book is? (Outside of TSC)
hmm this is a really good question. i tried to do a book quiz answer thingo share thing recently and couldn't come up with anything. honestly, i'm someone who reads a lot of nonfiction as well for Reasons and I can't choose with that either because it's always for a Purpose rather than enjoyment--and i can't compare across different books for fulfilling different purposes in life. but i'm guessing you mean fiction. and i don't know, i actually don't read a lot and it takes me a bit to process a good story properly and come up with good takes--i simply don't have the bandwidth to have many stories like that going at once. but when i do i consume stories like i do most art--i get really connected with one artist and read/look at/listen to everything they do and hope it's because it connects with me and heals something somewhere. cassandra clare is one such artist. when i was younger i really liked emily rodda and jacqueline wilson. between that like i did read a lot of series but never got that deep in and actually didn't spend a lot of time reading. i also like interacting with authors and seeing the journey of a book towards publishing on wattpad especially--but i don't think any of the wattpad books i've read either would be polished enough to be considered a fave and due to money constraints i often am unable to purchase the final version anyway.
like idk i just like characters i connect with (author or characters within stories) who I can get to know well and seem real and three dimensional (including their stories). otherwise yeah. no faves. sorry. i don't even have a fave *book* within tsc. it's just--not what i do rn.

Are there any specific things that inspired you to make Yimrasil? Like certain book or authors that made you want to write a book, or TV shows/movies?
For sure! I've loved the fantasy genre since I was super little (I was a very weird 2-3 year old who used to pretend to be a dragon at daycare and build nests out of pine needles). As a young kid I really enjoyed authors like Emily Rodda, mostly for her Deltora Quest series, and then as a teen I got into Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle.
I also watched the old BBC Narnia series as a kid, as well as the newer movies and The Chronicles of Narnia books. And of course I love Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (moves and books!).
I remember knowing that I wanted to write books very early on, but a lot of the motivation for writing about Yimrasil I think was D&D, Frederica and Lance were both my player characters in different campaigns, and the creativity to build worlds and write about my characters was so encouraged by my experiences playing with friends.
OH and The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, I'm pretty sure that's a huge inspiration, haha. I love that game so much, I was gifted it when I was 13 and I still play it now.

For the book ask; 4 and 14
4. Are you a fast or slow reader?
I'm definitely faster than the average reader; my record in highschool was 14 books in one week (I truly do not know how I finished things in a timely manner back then). As I've gotten older I definitely pace myself through books more, in terms of not finishing them in one sitting, but I still read just as quickly as I did when I was younger
14. What is your favorite children's book?
Oh this falls into two categories for me (I'm classifying "children's book" as anything I read before the age of like. 8 years old lol):
Favorite children's chapter book:
The Third Wish, by Emily Rodda. It was part of a series called "The Fairy Realm" where this girl discovered a secret world in her grandmother's garden. There's a wild amount of lore in the series given it's meant for like. 2nd-4th graders, and this book in particular featured mermaids (hence my fondness for it lol). They're still pretty cute reads. I highly recommend them for any kids who are really into fantasy things
Favorite CHILDREN'S children's book:
Madeline. Like all of them. I was obsessed with Madeline as a kid, and it honestly explains why I ended up taking French as I got older.

20. foolish
Did you know that chapter 5 of The Golden Door begins with the line, โ€œFate is strange, and our destinies can be shaped by very small decisions.โ€? And then Ms. Emily Rodda follows that with one of the most devastating, hopeless chapters she has ever written? And this is chapter five of the first book?
I was originally planning to rewrite part of that chapter because itโ€™s so captivating to me but itโ€™s basically perfect as is so I decided to instead flesh out the aftermath. In the book, we get the traumatic experience itself in detail but not so much about how it catalyzes Ryeโ€™s growth โ€“ which is weird because heโ€™s the only Rodda main character who gets a trauma bomb to start the series with, and as such is the only one with significant character development in book 1.
---
Rye leaned against the door of the restroom stall, letting out a long breath he had unknowingly stifled within himself.
Less than five minutes since he was separated from his mother, the sorrow threatened to overwhelm him. He gazed at the paper clutched in his hands, smoothing out the wrinkles.
Certificate of Employment, it read. Followed by paragraphs of pompous, overwrought text about what a great honor it was to waste your life away on the Weld farms.
Useless. He crumpled it up and threw it down the toilet. After it has been flushed into the recesses of the Keepโ€™s plumbing system, Rye sat on the seat cover and placed his head in his hands.
Maybe he would tolerated working the farms if Lisbeth were there, but without herโ€ฆ what was the point?
Lisbeth had insisted that last nightโ€™s events were not Ryeโ€™s fault, but he knew better. He had ruined her livelihood with his foolish negligence. Their home, all the bell trees โ€“ gone forever because of his childish urge to save the baby goat. Why had he done it? Sholto would never have. He would have rightly insisted that their family could barely take care of themselves, let alone another animal. Dirk might have taken pity on it, but he would be at least diligent enough to bring the goat inside!
But neither Dirk nor Sholto were here. Just Rye. They had long ago left to do something productive about the skimmers, something that would actually help their family. Rye knew without a doubt that it was time to follow in their footsteps.
If he really wanted, he could figure out how to be reunited with his mother, but he was sure he would just bring her more misfortune. He could not even care for a goat calf, so how could he take care of her?
The cries of the calf assaulted his memory. Had it felt any pain at all before the bloodthirsty skimmers ripped out its throat?
Rye broke down into sobs. The busy sounds of running water and flushing toilets mostly drowned out the sound.
There was no one to comfort him. He needed to grow up. The tears slowly subsided, and Rye pushed open the stall door.
He splashed water on his face and left. He was going to find Dirk and Sholto and bring them home.

2022 Read #1 - The Ghost of Raven Hill by Emily Rodda
Teen Power Inc renaissance starts NOW. I have the vaguest memories of reading these books in primary school over 15 years ago and they're so different from Rodda's other works. I'm glad I got invited to the tpi discord so this could be kicked off properly.
As a good rule of thumb Roddas protagonists are generally 6-7 years older than their intended audience and the ages of the protagonists arent specified so this book is likely intended for 7-12 year olds. That being said it feels much more juvenile than a lot of Rodda's later stuff - not necessarily a bad thing but the book did very much end with Liz listing how everyone's skills helped them solve the mystery. Still, it's a solid mystery with Rodda's signature plot twists and fun characters.
General thoughts:
Very strange imo that the book is titled after the B plot (Pearl's whole deal, a situation Liz was more or less alone in) but it's more eye catching than whatever you might pull from the A plot (delivering letters for the Pen and saving it from closure).
Cannot believe Rodda fed us insurance fraud, arson and kids escaping a fire, and attempted murder, along with about fifteen other things.
Love that Elmo is described as the shy and kind of lonely kid who really blooms when he's around the Pen's office.
I wish typing was still a marketable skill :(
It's so funny when everyone's surprised at how unintentionally observant Richelle is considering she drops her little nuggets all the time. And the little detail that says whenever Richelle's on board with something everyone else will fall in line is so funny and not exploited nearly enough.
Are ghosts canon in the tpi universe or nah
Snippets I bookmarked under the cut:
'And say we'll do anything,' I said.
Tom raised his eyebrows and opened his mouth.
'Within reason,' I added quickly. I could see he was going to say something stupid like what about lion taming or drug smuggling.
This is just like. Very funny considering what they get roped into later. Anyway.
I racked my brain for interesting jobs. 'You and Sunny and I can type, so there's that.'
I know I say this all the time but like GENUINELY almost moved to tears.
'Anyway, Teen Power's got at least one job. I'll ring Tom and tell him. You do Nick and Richelle.'
'Oh, no,' Sunny objected. 'Think I'm crazy?'
So in the end we decided to wait till the next day and tell them together. About the job. And the five a.m. start. That way Sunny'd be able to hold Nick down so he couldn't strangle me, and with her free hand she could catch Richelle when she fainted.
Just obsessed with this in general lol
'Psst!' the hiss made us jump out of our skins. With a creak, a door in the wood-panelled wall opened and Elmo's curly head peeped out. He beckoned. 'In here,'' he breathed. 'Quietly.'
Elmo is so cute he's sooooo cute. Little guy with curly red hair who's so quiet all the time pokes his head out of a cupboard to say hello people I barely know would you like to eavesdrop.
Richelle being casually observant compilation:
'[...] I mean, we aren't going to get any other jobs for a while, are we?'
'Why not?' I demanded.
'Well, because - you know - the phone number,' said Richelle, eyeing me in surprise.
We all stared at her. She started back.
'What do you mean, Richelle?' asked Sunny patiently.
'The number in our ad. There's only one, and it's been printed wrongly,' said Richelle. 'Didn't you know? I saw it when I was at the bus stop. Sam and I rang the number from McDonald's. It's a laundromat. Well, they're not going to take messages for us, are they?'
//
'You've got the collar of her shirt wrong,' she said critically. 'The knot was much looser than that.'

Lady grey, matcha, teapot, darjeeling ๐Ÿ’–
Lady grey: favourite outfit?
One of my favourite outfits to wear is: blue jeans with a brown belt, a lilac form fitting spaghetti strap crop top, with a light green oversized cardigan on top. The cardigan has flowers on it (itโ€™s not like a realistic floral pattern, itโ€™s just some white flowers), Iโ€™d wear this with some chunky white sneakers, and a green pair of socks that match the cardigan. It doesnโ€™t sound very cool here, but I promise I look very cute irl.
Matcha: favourite book?
Already answered this, but Iโ€™ll reiterate. I canโ€™t pick one favourite, some of my favourites include:
The whole deltora quest series by Emily Rodda
The mime order by Samantha Shannon
The dark is the night series by Kelley York and Rowan Altwood
Loveless by Alice Oseman
The surprising power of a good dumpling by Wai Chim
Teapot: music preference?
Ehhhh I donโ€™t have a preference I listen to a lot of things (I have 3000+ liked songs on Spotify so Iโ€™m open to mostly anything). Iโ€™m pretty sure I followed you on Spotify so you can check out my stupid playlists if you want asdfghjkl rn Iโ€™m hoping to fix them up and create a cohesive theme instead of just putting whatever
Darjeeling: a hobby?
Iโ€™ve been kinda too tired and depressed to like do any of my hobbies during lockdown rn, the only really consistent hobby being watching anime. Shout out to JoJo for providing me with some semblance of entertainment while our state premiere, Gladwrap Binoculars fucks up everything.

19 & 17 for the fanfic writer asks, pls and thank youuuuu! If those do not spark joy for any reason or if you've already done them, feel free to swap them for something else!
ooooh thanks angel! i'll give both of them a crack! :D
19. what are some books or authors that influenced your style the most?
Hmmm this is a very good question! i'm sure im probably an amalgamation of so many different influences tbh because i read A LOT but if i was going off authors where i've read a book or series and been like, damn i want to create something like this, then i would say:
Megan Whalen Turner (The Thief series), Kristen Cashore (Graceling Realm), Bridget Collins (The Binding), Marie Lu (Legend Series), Emily Rodda (Deltora Quest series) C.S Pacat (Captive Prince Series, Dark Rise), Madeline Miller (the Song of Achilles), V.E Schwab (Villains Series) & Nora Sakavic (All for the Game series).
I'll stop there otherwise i'll go on forever lol. (kind of honourable not-mention would be JK for the Harry Potter series too but since she's a TERF and genuinely behaving horribly i'm discounting her, the credit there would mostly be for building a love of reading as a young kid which arguably i could also credit to Emily Rodda, Ali Sparkes, Scott Westerfeld, Rick Riordan, R.L Stine, Meg Cabot, Suzanne Collins, Janet Austen etc) also kind of proud most of these are women tbh.
17. what is your favorite line youโ€™ve ever written?
omg hahahahahahaha well first thing you should know about me is that i have a pretty atrocious memory lol so I really wouldn't know one off the top of my head unless of course i was rereading that story. That's not to say i haven't had moments where i've written a line or a description and have been like damn that sentence fucks lol so I'd know it when i see it? Sorry that's such a non-answer!
There's a line from my current original work that i really, really like but i'm writing that in the hopes of publishing eventually so i won't put it here that for obvious reasons. (sorry again that's such a tease)
But what I will give is a line from a current Vegas/Pete fic i'm in the middle of, which isn't really a spoiler since nobody will understand the context:
โ€œMaybe,โ€ he agrees, just to spite Vegas with the possibility. โ€œBut I guess youโ€™ll never know.โ€
i wouldn't say it's my favourite line in the fic but it's one i certainly enjoyed writing ;)
thanks for the asks!!!!

Bookish asks: 2 & 14?
Thank you!
2. Are you an Austen person or a Bronte person?
Definitely an Austen person, although I admit I havenโ€™t read much of the Brontes (just Jane Eyre which I do appreciate even if I donโ€™t overly vibe with it). I do own several other Bronte works which are on my (endless) TBR list, but Austen is one of my favourite authors and I adore all of her novels.
14. What is your favourite childrenโ€™s book?
Iโ€™m not sure what exactly classified as a childrenโ€™s book these days - I assume it goes Children-Young Adult-Adult and is not limited to picture books, so in that case I will say Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda, which was very formative for me. Itโ€™s an excellent fantasy book/quest story for children, and I have gone back and re-read it several times as an adult (along with the other books in the series) - it really holds up and would recommend it for any childโ€™s introduction to fantasy.

for the book questions: 18, 24, 39? happy new year! โœจ
Happy new year!! :D
18. what books did you reread?
Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman, Railsea by China Miรฉville, Between Two Ends by David Ward, The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud, and The Nine Lives of Chloe King by Lis Braswell. All either children's or YA, since that's what my bookshelves are full of right now (thanks to my multi-year reading slump in high school). I'm trying to winnow things down so I have room for books I'm more interested in, hence the rereads. So far it's going pretty well! I put up another shelf and got rid of enough books that the remaining ones all fit on the shelves, which is a big improvement (goodbye floor stack! You won't be missed!)
Of those rereads, all are staying except for The Amulet of Samarkand (a library book) and Between Two Ends (off to the Little Free Library as soon as pandemic precautions permit).
24. book you already want to reread?
I sound like a broken record here, but of this year's books: Empire of Sand and Realm of Ash by Tasha Suri, and the Ancillary Justice trilogy by Ann Leckie. Witchmark by C. L. Polk is one I know I'll come back to in the future, but I'm not ready to yet (I want to read the sequel first!)
To change up my answers a bit, something I didn't read this year but really want to reread is the Deltora Quest series by Emily Rodda. I loved those books as a kid, and it seems like an especially good time to reread them seeing as I'm DMing a D&D game. I think they might be helpful for figuring out how to structure adventures, since the books are short and it's a very quest-focused series.
39. what book had the prettiest cover?
Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim, which I didn't end up finishing. It was described as "Project Runway meets Mulan," which I was SO on board for, but the actual competition is abandoned sometime before the halfway mark in favour of a quest to obtain sewing materials. I disliked the love interest too much to continue reading (he's far too old for the teenage protagonist, and annoying on top of that).
If anyone knows of any fashion-focused fantasy books, or books about a reality TV-style competition, I'm all ears (I already have a library hold on One to Watch, but haven't found any others I'm interested in).
