“Cut Bait” The Black Lives Matter protests and activism of the last two weeks, while no longer eliciting citywide curfews here in Philadelphia, have been monumental in getting offending officers charged and maybe more significantly (according to one poll) getting a majority of Americans to agree to supporting the demonstrations. By hitting a breaking point and shining a light on the injustice of the devaluation of black folks in this country, the protests have made all too clear the structures in place to rule with a white supremacist inherent bias and defend it with an ironclad fist and the slaughter of innocents. The police in their crowd-controlling have only served to further taint their image with countless and escalating brutal acts targeting those protesting those acts. Thankfully so many have shared resources for education, protesting, and dismantling this fundamentally flawed and corrupt system with a message becoming clear: defunding the police is crucial and necessary for progress. So long as the funding pipeline remains unchecked, so too do the brutal militants who’s weaponry and chokeholds are paid for by your tax dollars. Time for a cop out. Put that money to better use and donate to make strides and support this effort. Put a Bird On It!” Were the president’s fondness for the ruthlessness of dictators the world over not clear enough, Trump has stepped up his game this time doing the poorest job of dressing up his despotism yet. Now he’s descended on Portland, OR and it’s peaceful protesters with fleets of secret police in unmarked vehicles using gestapo-like tactics to snatch marchers from the street without any statement of charges or information whatsoever. Portland, though notoriously white, has stayed strong and active in its BLM protesting with unwavering conviction, something that @realdonaldtrump just can’t stand for...because you know, white supremacy and a base to keep at bay. So obviously the most tactical campaign strategy and way to get out from under @joebiden surge in the polls is to really lean in to his strength: Fascism with a capital “F” while whining about ANTIFA the whole way. “Magical History Tourer” They don’t make them quite like John Lewis anymore. The son of Alabama share croppers, Lewis met his idol, Martin Luther King Jr. at age 17, and risked it all to fight for civil rights for black folks, and integration of the Jim Crowe South. He joined the Freedom Riders and suffered skull fractures when assaulted by state troopers while marching on the Pettus Bridge in Selma on Bloody Sunday, in an attempt to get voting rights for Black Americans. All this before a dedicated career as a congressman in Georgia, with an unwavering focus on justice and equality for all. Although we mourn the loss of such a towering and influential figure, his legacy is so crucial and important in this moment. Until his dying day Lewis remained grounded in his past experience and the blood, sweat, and tears, he and his contemporaries had devoted in service of attaining the most basic of civil liberties. Lewis was a firm supporter of marriage equality on that basis long before it was on vogue, and in listening to his 2009 interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, I was struck by how logical and consistent in his values and his life’s trajectory this man was. “Out of Toon” Long after @harikondabolu famously raised the issue of white voice actors like @hankazaria playing characters of color, the current moment and strides made by the Black Lives Matter movement are making quick work of changing that all too common trend. @alisonbrie expressed regret for her portrayal of the Vietnamese American character Diane on @bojackhorseman (though it’s now ended it’s run), and both @jennyslate and @kristenanniebell stepped down from their mixed-race characters on @bigmouthnetflix and @centralparkofficial , respectively. Rounding it out, @thesimpsons finally relented and has put out a statement the characters of color will only be played by people of color from here on out. Though the animation industry and these shows aren’t necessarily making these strides out of the kindness of their hearts and are simply saving face like so many other brands, it is reassuring to see some of these folks truly educating themselves and making tough career choices for the betterment of the cause. I myself am tempted in some of these cases to hem and haw about the context or the necessity of holding a mirror to the ugliness or society through shows like #theoffice and #community, whose scenes and episodes were also edited in light of the moment, but when a man is choked to death by a kneeling cop while begging to breathe that ugliness is pretty clear and the context is obvious whether two-dimensional or not. Hollywood portrayals and casting matter and race isn’t a costume for a 22 minute romp that can be shed without a thought. “Burn After Beating” So many of you are far more well versed in these issues, many having been the targets of this hatred without having the privilege to know otherwise. I feel true shame and I struggle to even say anything without pouring salt on wounds that are rightly torn and gushing, the constant struggle made manifest in the public eye. I don’t presume to speak for anyone but I hope my black friends and family know that your experience and oppression is deserving of vocalization and is valuable. The dehumanization of growing ledger of black folks killed due to police brutality is appalling and only grows as names become added to the list.
