As part of the Creative Wildfire Manifesto and it’s Call to Create, artists @msclarity83 and @milkmcspilly created a short comic series on how grief shows up in our organizing spaces and how the movement for a just transition is affected when we hold our grief poorly versus when we honor it. The monster is holding two paintbrushes in its tentacles with neon pink paint. The text reads “Grief is a Monster”, but the monster has crossed out Monster with a pink marker and written “Messenger”. Over a background of gears in gray, the following slides read: Grief is a naturally-occurring response to the loss of an attachment (tangible and intangible) and is guaranteed in the course of our lives¹. Those of us engaged in revolutionary work often carry cumulative griefs of marginalized identities, deep ancestral pain, and the pain of being on the frontlines of the destruction of our lands and communities. Too often, however, we ignore our grief, fearful of its challenges. Viewing grief as a burden, rather than as a messenger that nurtures community.   A contemplative person, wearing a gear top and scarf, rests with their hand supporting their head, with a grief monster enshrouding the back of their head and hair. As we resist the pull of “NORMal” and work to “build cooperative, caring, connected, community-controlled institutions”²,  we know that relationships are the key. It is through shared stories and rituals of mourning that we can find meaning and reinstate our commitment to each other and to a just transition.
