The Burmy Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Burmy here is Pokemon’s second bagworm inspired design - the first being Pineco back in Gen 2. Burmy are much more clear iterations of the popular moth larva, obviously being a little wormy thing cloaked in various materials, rather than what at first appears to just be a normal pinecone.
What’s unique about Burmy though is that it has an interesting mechanic where it changes form depending on what sort of environment it last fought in. This parallels real bagworm behavior, sort of, since the real insects gather debris from their general vicinity to make cocoons and protection out of.
Burmy are usually found in the forest, so the leafy ‘plant cloak’ is their most common form, but fighting in a desert or cave will result in the ‘sandy cloak’ seen on the left. The most special in my opinion, though, is the ‘trash cloak’ seen on the right, the result of Burmy fighting in an urban environment, specifically inside buildings. While it’s called trash, the required environment seems to imply this Burmy is cloaked in fiberglass insulation, which is incredibly creative if you ask me. The poor thing must itch like hell, though.
Tumblr media
Also true to real bagworm biology - female Burmy don’t mature into moth-like forms, instead remaining as cloaked bagworms for the rest of their lives. Female Burmy evolve into Wormadam, each sticking to whatever form they were when they evolved, permanently. Each has a unique typing as well, which are Bug/Ground, Bug/Grass, and Bug/Steel, respectively. Additionally, just to help convey these worms are LADIES, the designers made sure to give them eyelashes, and colored tips to their snouts like lipstick. It’s cute enough.
It’s a shame this family has so much attention put into it mechanically and design speaking, since they’re pitifully weak in-game. I’d love to use a Wormadam at some point, but their underwhelming stats and shallow move pools kinda limit that option. Such is life, I suppose.
Tumblr media
…oh yeah, also like true bagworms, all male Burmy will get to evolve into the flight-capable Mothim. Sorry to say that Mothim is one of the Pokemon I think the least about overall, since it’s incredibly overshadowed by its feminine counterparts. There’s just so little interesting going on with its design, just being another cartoon moth to add to the catalogue. Eh. It’s not too brightly colored or has a gaudy palette or anything, it’s fine at the end of the day. It even has the little beak that Burmy has, so the two are kind of connected still.
Score: 3.5/5
Tumblr media
I’ve been giving out a lot of 3.5s lately, huh.

Jigglypuff Playthrough (Fire Red)
Fighter: Jigglypuff
Game: Pokémon Fire Red, Game Boy Advance. First Released on January 29th 2004.
Tumblr media
Fighter Bio.
Jigglypuff is known as the balloon Pokémon, being the evolution of Igglybuff and evolving into Wigglytuff with the use of a Moon Stone. With its nature as a balloon Pokémon it can increase its size by inhaling air and in some cases deflate itself becoming almost flat. It can use its large eyes to mesmerize opponents and when it has their attention then inflates its lungs before singing a melody. The melody varies from place to place with it even in some cases simply sounding like it’s shouting, however it is very skilled at putting opponents to sleep with its voice. It is often found in lush green plains and grassy meadows. There have not particularly been many notable specific Jigglypuff in the game series with the only one that really sticks out being one which sits in the Pokémon Centre in Pewter City. If talked to it will sing its song, which matches the theme from the anime. An NPC nearby will say how when it sings he feels sleepy and in Pokémon Yellow, if Pikachu is following and Jigglypuff sings it will fall asleep.
Enemies/Rivals: Honestly, this barely counts as a rivalry, but in the anime, which aspects of Super Smash Bros have been inspired by when it comes to Pokémon, there is an episode where Jigglypuff seems to have a rivalry with Clefairy. The two species tend to live in the vicinity of each other when it comes to Kanto with Jigglypuff living on the route leading to Mount Moon and Clefairy living within Mount Moon, however nothing beyond an episode of the anime has been specifically stated, still I wanted to mention it at least.
Crossovers with other Smash characters: Similar to Pikachu and most other Pokémon, Jigglypuff hasn’t really had any crossovers with other Smash characters outside of its series. There was a cameo of the game Mario & Wario in the Kanto games, appearing on the tv in the character Copycat’s house, but that is the closest there has been to an actual crossover. With Jigglypuff being far less prominent than Pikachu it has also not had as many appearances overall.
Tumblr media
Why this game?
I was going to say this was a fairly simple choice before, however very recently I have considered instead doing a separate game for Jigglypuff, specifically due to a new release, but because this release was so recent I decided instead to stick with my original game for Jigglypuff being Fire Red. I will get to the other game down the line, but I feel as it’s still so new I’d rather give it some time before talking about it. I will mention an aspect why I considered that game later on in this post, and if you look at my list of games I’ve completed you’ll probably be able to work out what game it was I considered. As for why Fire Red, well as with Pikachu, it’s simply that I consider Fire Red and Leaf Green as the definitive Kanto experiences when it comes down to it, and when I can, I like to play either the game generation where a Pokémon debuted or in some cases where they gained a significant feature, such as a Mega Evolution.
Tumblr media
My past with this Pokémon.
So, unlike with Pikachu, I don’t feel there’s an awful lot I can say about Jigglypuff, despite me having been with the series since Gen 1. When it comes to the games, Jigglypuff is somewhat interesting to me, it’s a fairly unique Pokémon that only shows up uncommonly in one location in Kanto. As such, compared to a lot of the other Pokémon you find on that Route Jigglypuff stands out a fair bit being sort of a similar novelty in my mind to Pikachu in Viridian Forest. Of course, the bigger role for Jigglypuff and most likely why it was chosen for Super Smash Bros was its appearance in the anime, with a specific Jigglypuff being a recurring extra who would sing to people putting everyone there asleep. Jigglypuff then would get angry that everyone slept through its song and draw on their faces. This role seemed to make Jigglypuff somewhat popular back in the early days of the series, however over time Jigglypuff stopped appearing in the anime (which is understandable as it would outlast its welcome, like some other running jokes could in the anime) and overall faded somewhat in prominence, with other Pokémon from the first Generation overtaking it’s popularity in recent years such as Charizard and Eevee.
It’s due to this people for some time, myself admittedly included tended to think if any character would likely get cut from the Super Smash Bros roster it would be Jigglypuff, but I’m glad they’ve not. Jigglypuff is an unconventional character, being just simply a regular Pokémon and not one who’s been promoted really heavily like Lucario for example, so I appreciate its presence all these years. As for past Gen 1, Jigglypuff has only really had two notable changes. The first was it gained a pre-evolution or ‘baby form’ in Igglybuff, which is one of those Pokémon I tend to forget exist sometimes. (This isn’t to say I dislike it, just that it, Cleffa and Happiny are Pokémon I’ve not really had on one of my teams before, and I’ve only in recent years started really using the breeding mechanics in the games.) The second big development for Jigglypuff is one which happened for a few older Pokémon in Gen 6, that being the introduction of a new Pokémon type, Fairy. With this new type introduced, some older Pokémon gained this as a secondary type, with Jigglypuff in this case becoming a Normal Fairy type. As a Pokémon, Jigglypuff’s evolutionary line tend to have fairly high HP. I’m not an expert really on how good certain Pokémon are comparatively to others etc, so all I can really say is in my experience I remember Wigglytuff being able to take a few blows similar to Chansey and Clefable. With that said however, I believe out of the three it’s the one which can take the least hits as its defence isn’t particularly good, it just has a lot of HP. With it gaining a fairy typing it got a few more advantages with access to better moves, its main strength being special rather than physical attacks overall.
Tumblr media
My Smash Playthrough.
At the end of my playthrough of Fire Red my Jigglypuff was at level 57 with the ability cute charm and a calm nature, having been caught on Route 3 at level 5. The moves Jigglypuff has are Sing, Double-Edge, Pound and Rest. In order for Jigglypuff to use rollout in this game it has to be bred and inherit the move as an egg move, however breeding in Fire Red is only available in the post-game, therefore I decided for this playthrough to go for a move at least close to it. I decided on Double-Edge due to the risk rollout holds in Super Smash Bros since you can easily go off the stage with it if you’re not careful. I felt this matched Double Edge damaging the user. Honestly, when it came down to it, Jigglypuff was the weakest member of my team alongside Squirtle. I feel like Wigglytuff would likely have stood more of a chance, although only perhaps in the sense it could have survived maybe an attack and respond, but Jigglypuff, other than with regular Pokémon Trainers and wild Pokémon, would only really be useful taking a hit so I could heal up other team members. I believe earlier in the game it managed to pull off one or two victories, mostly only being able to get the final blow on an opponent my other Pokémon had weakened already, however Jigglypuff’s low speed meant this was still risky. There was one occasion where Jigglypuff stood out in my run, with a lot of luck against Agatha. Jigglypuff was able somehow to avoid hypnosis 4 times and put Gengar to sleep with sing, allowing me to recover my team and take them down. That run of the Elite 4 was unsuccessful, but it was probably Jigglypuff’s shining moment. Overall however there weren’t many memories I really had with Jigglypuff specifically in my playthrough and they ended up being one of the team members I had to spend the most time trying to keep up with the rest of the team in levels. I do have to give Jigglypuff credit on one front however, its sing move was very useful in catching Pokemon without having to switch to a weaker team, it could take the hits of weaker wild Pokemon and just keep going until they were put to sleep, not to mention its low attack stat often meaning it could use pound without knocking them down in one blow.
Specific aspects about the game relating to Jigglypuff in Smash.
So, as stated earlier, I mostly kept the same moves for Jigglypuff as in Super Smash Bros, with Pound, Rest and Sing, however Rollout was unavailable until the post-game for Fire Red. With this said, in later games I have put together teams of the Pokémon from Smash with all the moves they need, so I have a Jigglypuff with Pound, Rest, Sing and Rollout. I did have this Pokémon in Pokémon Ultra Moon which was originally where I was going to leave this, however, with the Isle of Armour update in Sword and Shield, I was able to get Jigglypuff in that game. The reason this is something I was particularly pleased for relates to the final aspect of Jigglypuff in Smash, that being its Final Smash. In Super Smash Bros, Jigglypuff will use Puff Up, a move where it inflates to a giant size, pushing all others off the stage before reverting back to its regular size. This move wasn’t based on anything specifically from the games, beyond Jigglypuff being described as the balloon Pokémon and having a great lung capacity. What’s funny is that in Sword and Shield, Dynamaxing was introduced, where Pokémon will grow to a giant size. Jigglypuff wasn’t available in the base game, but with the update adding it to the game however, it gained access to Dynamaxing, being very close to it’s Puff Up Final Smash. It was for this reason I considered playing Sword and Shield as the game for this Pokémon, however in the end I figured I will cover that game later (and there’s a lot to say on it) and for now I would stick with Fire Red for Jigglypuff. Finally, I caught Jigglypuff in a regular Pokeball, matching the regular Pokeball thrown onto the stage in its entrance animation in Smash.

Let’s Talk About Pokemon - The Fairy Type
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During Gen 6, they dropped the bomb that is the Fairy type. The first type to be added to the series since Dark and Steel waaaay back in Gen 2. It felt like a long time coming, as the Dragon types had run rampant in Pokemon's metagame for nearly two whole decades and other fans were clamoring for a “Light” type. Honestly, myself included when I was a silly teenager. Though my interpretation of a Light type was a lot more literal than others, which seemed to give off the impression for the type to be more angelic themed that just straight up “something that lights up.”
In the end, I'm glad we got Fairy instead. A “holy” themed type for Pokemon would feel rather out of place to a point where Arceus itself is really pushing it. Fairy is a lot more flexible than even my literal Light type, since they aren't so bound to needing a spot on their body to glow or some such or are even bound to the “moral righteousness” of the hypothetical Light type fans have wanted. Despite its cute innocence on the surface, Fairy type has a lot more room to get darker than you'd expect.
I'm sure everyone by now is aware of myths and fairy tales being a lot darker back in the day than their modern interpretations. This is perfectly reflected in the Fairy types introduced after the type's inception, with many of them being cute on the surface but dreadfully dark in other places. Though if not that, they're at the very least a type of light-hearted tricksters. You got Mimikyu's shadowy appearance and murderous tendencies plus Tapu-Lele's surprisingly dark take on a classic Healer achetype, and even Klefki's meager trickery of stealing people's keys.
I don't think I overall have too many qualms with the Pokemon that got retconned into Fairy type either. They don't 100% fit the bill as the ones from Gen 6 and 7, but that's to be expected when you have to retroactively hand them the typing. The only line that outright doesn't feel like it fits to me is the Marill line. I'm past the point where I've finally convinced myself Granbull isn't Normal type anymore, but I can never get it out of my head that the Marills are anything other than pure Water. What's up with you guys? Seems arbitrary to hand the type out to something that's just sickeningly cute and nothing more.
The type as far as Gen 6-onwards goes, it could use a bit more variation. If it's pink and has huge adorable little eyes, it's probably Fairy. I can think of a handful of Gens 1-5 Pokemon that easily could've been part of the Fairy retcon, including Hypno, the Vanillite line, Banette, maybe even Conkeldurr since you could slightly associate the type with clowns? Perhaps maybe even Snorunt and Glalie. Or maybe I just want more Ice/Fairy types in particular. Pink with Light Blue is a nice color scheme, okay?
Top 10 Favorite Fairy Types:
Tumblr media
Bottom 10 Least Favorite Fairy Types:
Tumblr media
This is hard when there's so many to like. But I guess I'll narrow it down to this group of “slightly less than great” ones.
The Cutest:
Tumblr media
The Coolest:
Tumblr media
Yeah, see? We could still use a few more “cool” Fairies!
The Prettiest:
Tumblr media
The Spookiest:
Tumblr media
The Weirdest/Most Unique:
Tumblr media
Most Inventive Use of the Type:
Tumblr media
I still feel like this type has a ways to go to have this section one day be satisfyingly out-there. The most inventive it really gets is a surprise bulldog, a Fairy-deer-forest-spirit, and Spitzee being a really unique take on a Plague Doctor design.
FAIRY TYPE WISHLIST:
NOTE: These Type Wishlists were written out before any news on new Pokemon from Sword and Shield. The Pokemon revealed over time will not affect these wishlists. Just to present them unaltered despite spoilers and in the interest of getting the wishlist out there, and to see which items on said wishlists get fulfilled by Sword and Shield!
Tumblr media
A Unicorn:
At least a more modern conception of a unicorn. Rapidash is kinda in-line with old-timey unicorns that were pretty much just horses that happen to have horns and some magic powers. Go full-on My Little Pony with it, I don’t care. I want an obnoxiously colorful horse.
Tumblr media
A Gnome:
Since I've already covered elves, why not put a highlight on Gnomes? The obvious take to make would be a Grass/Fairy type given their ties to being lawn ornaments, but a gnome of any description would be hilarious to me.
Tumblr media
A Dwarf:
This is a bit more of a variation of the Gnome wish. But given dwarf's connections with the underground, mining, and such in popular culture, it could be pulled off as a Rock/Fairy type. We need more Fairies with gruff demeanors anyway! Granbull's pretty lonely.
Tumblr media
An Imp:
“But Matt!” I hear you possibly say. “Wouldn't an imp creature be more fitting for the Dark type?” Of course it is! But think of it this way: Imps are like the runts of demonic hordes of monsters. The tiny critters often with little bat wings and are in most cases in pop culture are just low-stakes tricksters compared to their more serious demon big brothers. It sounds and awful lot like a demonic version of a Fairy doesn't it? That's perfect for our first Dark/Fairy type!
Tumblr media
ANYTHING Wonderland Themed:
Honestly, the old tale of Alice in Wonderland is in and of itself a treasure trove of cool monster ideas waiting to happen to where if we get anything even vaguely themed after said old story, I'd take it. But in particular...
Tumblr media
Jabberwock:
Jabberwock is a monster within Wonderland's extended universe and has already appeared all over popular media from Final Fantasy to a number of other vaguely fantasy-themed medias. Being a rather goofy looking dragon-esque denizen of Wonderland, it's PERFECT for our first-ever Dragon/Fairy type! Or at least one that's Dragon/Fairy by default...
Tumblr media
A Sandman:
At least I think anything dream-themed would be a fit for the Fairy type that is oddly missing at the moment. I’m surprised Munna and Musharna didn’t get retconned to Fairy either. But in the interest in representing dreams as a physical being, a sandman-based monster would be a good fit for the type. Typing-wise, I’d make it Fairy/Ground but Fairy/Psychic would work just fine as well.
Tumblr media
A Cake:
In general I'm never not gonna get tired of any monster designed after desserts and sweets. But in particular, I'd love to see a cake creature. Maybe it gets more tiers/layers as it evolves and eventually becomes ridiculously tall and towering like an Alolan Exeggutor. Add in some candles and maybe it picks up the Fire type as well?

Note
Oh, All-knowing Jess, hear my call and drive away my doubts: how was received in Japan the datamining of the beta of Pokémon Gold? What do you think about it? Are some Pokémon you like or want in actual games? (Personally, my favourite is that creepy Pinsir, for some reasons it reminds me of the Kaonashi from Spirited Away!)
You know, that’s a good question. I’ve seen some fanart and reactions on Twitter, but I didn’t really follow it much, sorry!
To make it up to you, I will now review all of the betas:
Tumblr media
Chikorita!
Yay! I think I’ve made it very clear that I am a big fan of this little plant nugget, so I don’t have much to add really.
10/10
Tumblr media
AAAGGGGHHH?!
What the fuck is this thing? How does this relate to Chikorita or Meganium, who are both largely unchanged from their beta designs? Where are the eyes? Like I’m diggin’ the tiny smug face-looking thing at the top of the bulb, but what’s the deal with the huge single eye down below? Where did the legs go? Why does the body shape change so drastically in the in-between stage when both the first and third stages are quadrupeds?!
0/10 would not trade Bayleef for it
Tumblr media
Meganium
Whew, okay. Back on familiar ground here. Meganium is likely my least favorite of the Johto starters’ final forms, but I still like my big, dumb boy.
8/10
Tumblr media
Tepkon
Awww~!
So unpopular opinion, but for a long time I really disliked cyndaquil’s design. I’ve come around to it these days, but back when GS came out, it really put me off. This thing is absolutely adorable, and though the design isn’t super inspired, I still fucking love it.
7/10 wouldn’t trade cyndaquil for it, but would love to see the design reworked for future games
Tumblr media
Chubby quilava
This is like quilava’s cousin who grows up to discover that he’s actually more of a bear than a twink. Really like it–seems very cuddly.
7/10 like quilava better but I support this thicc boi
Tumblr media
Kirara
Seriously, this is basically just Kirara from Inuyasha. Not as crazy about this design as its pre-evos, especially since it seems like it’s trying to edge in on arcanine’s floof territory. An okay pokemon, but not a fave.
6/10 would not trade typhlosion for it
Tumblr media
Baby Nessie
Totodile was one of those pokemon that I had been low-key hoping for, but I gotta admit that this is one adorable little fucker. Look at its stubby limbs! Its cute snoot! Its pudgy tail!
6/10 would not trade totodile but would love to see in another game
Tumblr media
Let me clear my thoat (I hope ya don’t mind)
I am…less enthused about the middle evo. The eyes are cute and the little shy smile is to die for, but the…ballast? on its throat kind of looks like a giant boil and I’m not really here for that.
4/10 no thanks I’ll keep croconaw
Tumblr media
Dragonair but with legs
The final evo I like a bit more–it looks like a dragonair that struck up a deal with Ursula the sea witch so that it could pursue its land-dwelling love. Now that the gem isn’t jammed right up under the chin it’s less off-putting, and the kind of fang-looking necklace is a Good Look.
6/10 still prefer feraligatr but GameFreak please dust off this design
Tumblr media
Hoot-Hoot’s just really into henna right now
I’ve never been a huge fan of hoot-hoot, and I kind of like the extra markings. I assume they were taken off to make the design less busy as well as giving it a fanned tail, but I think I’d actually prefer this one.
5/10 would replace regular hoot-hoot with this one
Tumblr media
It is the night
Okay, here we go! Now this is a cool-looking pokemon that would make training up a damn hoot-hoot worth it. Noctowl is a decent pokemon in the game since it means you get access to psychic moves early in the game, but I’ve always thought the design looked too goofy. I like irl owls a lot and this design really speaks to me.
8/10 go back in time and give teenage me this bird instead
Tumblr media
Mareep
There’s not a ton to say here other than they lightened up mareep’s fleshy bits in the final release, and I like mareep quite a bit so there we go. Instead, I want to draw attention to this disaster of a backsprite. What am I even looking at? A giant ball of cotton candy that rolled through a bunch of broken candy canes?
9/10 I mean I like mareep, but I gotta take off a point for that awful backsprite
Tumblr media
Flaaffy
Flaaffs seems largely unchanged. I’m pretty partial to this boi as well, especially since I had one following me for a bit in my Japanese Soul Silver game.
8/10 I like flaaffy, but fuck that name spelling
Tumblr media
Ampharos
One of my fave Gen 2 pokemon! Doesn’t seem to have much different about it, though I did always question where the delightful floof went. I mean we get it back in the mega evolution but still. What was that about, GameFreak?
9/10 docked a point for lack of floof
Tumblr media
Mikon
So this is clearly a pre-evo idea for vulpix, and it’s pretty damn cute. I love that with the addition of this member to the family, it’s confirmed that the line increases its number of tails by 3 every time it evolves. I like this, but I’m not entirely sold on it. The face lacks some detail and I feel like the design isn’t different enough from vulpix to really feel necessary.
7/10 it’s cute but I don’t think vulpix needs a pre-evo
Tumblr media
Mahou Shoujo Green
This tangela pre-evo is pretty cute, though the body underneath kind of reminds me a bit too much of oddish. I mean maybe it’d be cool to look at the oddish line and the tangela line and see how two related species had off-shoots, but I am not really the biggest fan of baby pokemon as an institution so these will all be a hard sell for me, sorry.
6/10 again, cute but unecessary
Tumblr media
Tangrowth as imagined by CalArts
I loved tangela a lot back in the day, and tangrowth is a really interesting pokemon as well…however this one has a little bow and ringlet hair so like, no contest, really.
9/10 this should be an alternate evo option for tangela (perhaps for females?)
Tumblr media
i could be your angle or yuor devil
So this one is kinda cool in concept. It’s clearly drawing influence from Japanese kites, and the scary face might be an evolutionary feature designed to scare off predators…that or it’s a flying/ghost or flying/dark type and the angel imagery is the ruse. Either way I fucking love this thing.
10/10 I want this concept revisited
Tumblr media
Qwilfish
I like qwilfish a lot! It’s got cool typing, it can perform decently on a rain team, and it’s based on a pufferfish. It’s definitely an underdog in the wider world, but not in my heart.
10/10
Tumblr media
The Fish Who Lived
I have…reservations about this evolution though. As cool as it would be to have a qwilfish evolution, this just isn’t doing it for me. It’s kinda cool that it’s shaped like a naval mine, and the Harry Potter scar is pretty cute, but I can get over the dead-eyed stare.
4/10 yeah no I think I’m happy to wait for better evo ideas to come along
Tumblr media
Pichu
Pichu’s cute enough I guess but I’ve never liked it as much as pikachu and sure as hell not as much as my boy raichu. However if the baby version was this roly poly cutie, I think I’d be more into it. This style of pre-evo harkens back to the good ol’ days of fat pikachu, and therefore I must doff my cap to it.
8/10 with a bit of polishing I would take this over pichu for sure
Tumblr media
Cleffa
Okay, so of the baby pokemon, of which I am generally not fond, cleffa is by far my favorite because of how cute it is. This is also extremely cute. I like picturing the trainer being able to just grab the thing by the little knob on its head if it’s heading toward danger. Plus that tail nub is so cute! I don’t know that I could choose between this version and the actual cleffa.
9/10 would be a 10 but Nate once said “what if cleffa’s hands were its nipples?” and now I can’t unsee it
Tumblr media
Igglybuff
Iggly has always reminded me of the Powerpuff Girls, but this beta version is so…delightfully round. God, it’s like hypnotizing how round it is. You wouldn’t have to show this from above to trick someone in a silhouette quiz. The tiny, wide-set eyes are also both piercing and kind of unassuming, which I can’t decide is cute or terrifying.
8/10 think I’d swap this guy in for the existing igglybuff
Tumblr media
Quagsire!
I freaking LOVE quagsire. It’s so derpy, I love water/ground types, and just everything about it is cute and makes me want to hug it. The only problem with it in this beta is that there’s no wooper.
10/10 bring wooper with you bro
Tumblr media
Natu
I’ve always thought natu was cute and really neat in concept, but I’ve never actually sat down and trained one. This sprite isn’t too different from its final one, but it is missing the color scheme, which is one of the reasons I like it.
6/10 stop being so washed out!
Tumblr media
Xatu
Also largely unchanged from its final design, though I do prefer the Silver sprite where its wings are spread. (And I’m sorry about this, but some of the pictures will have bits of other sprites in them, since it was hard cutting these all down in Paint with a trackpad.)
7/10 very unique
Tumblr media
Prince(ss) of the sea
Is this a pre-evo of goldeen and seaking, and I can see why it was cut. Who thought either of those would be popular enough to warrant a baby form?
2/10 fuck yeah was a meme guys, it wasn’t sincere
Tumblr media
Marill
Marill’s okay. I think it’s fairly cute, and the design they went with using smaller ears and non-clown feet is better imo. Plus this is really minor but it’s bothering me that despite the codename “pikablu” this sprite is pink.
6/10 solid cute pokemon, but the final design is better
Tumblr media
Finding Flounder
So I’m a big fan of lanturn because of its digimon-esque eyes and its cool typing. Chinchou I’m…eh on. This cutie though, I could get used to this.
8/10 cute eyes are better than terrifying cross eyes I’m sorry
Tumblr media
Clanker’s Cavern
As I just said, I like lanturn a lot. However, this is a shark with an anchor attached. That’s like if you left dhelmise and sharpedo at the day care on the same day an enemy team spilled plutonium all over the yard. It’s so stupid! I love this thing so damn much.
8/10 it’s way too similar to other existing pokemon, but I still kind of want it anyway
Tumblr media
Homsar
This thing kind of scares me. The gaping mouth, the wide eyes, and the fact that it clearly would inhabit deep parts of the ocean all make me want to nope out. That said though, I respect it.
6/10 glad they came back to this idea with elektross
Tumblr media
Crobat
If you’ve ever battled me in one of our local or online tournaments, you will know that I have a soft spot for crobat. I think golbat’s design is kind of terrible, zubat is simplistic yet kinda cute, and crobat gets to be both cute/cool and also not suck completely in battle (see what I did there?). This design seems mostly unchanged.
8/10 a very good bro
Tumblr media
Most likely to drive an airbrushed van
This paras pre-evo looks like it’s inspired by a lovely whimsical creature from Wonderland or Fantasia. I kind of like having a pre-evo to show that at the start the sinister mushrooms allow the baby para to call the shots, biding its time until takes over the entire nervous system as a parasect. Really not feeling the face, though.
5/10 cute, interesting idea, but I don’t know if I want to add more baby pokemon to the mix
Tumblr media
Spinarak
I have some mild arachnophobia, but I actually rather like spinarak since it’s so adorable. This version is a little more true to life and not as adorable. Also wtf GameFreak stop giving your arachnids six legs!
5/10 very much prefer the final design but kinda reminds me of the little jumpy bois I catch and release from inside my apartment sometimes
Tumblr media
Ariados
Again with the six legs thing. Ugh. Anyway, this beta version of ariados is actually much cuter than the one we ended up getting in the final game. I’m pretty lukewarm on ariados in general (my spider boi of choice is the far superior galvantula), but look at this thing’s face! Look at the face on its body! It’s cute even when it’s trying to be scary!
6/10 why did we not get this adorable boi?!
Tumblr media
Skarmory
It’s skarmory. That’s it. A pokemon that I like in theory but have never been super into his design.
5/10 respectably cool but not my cup of tea
Tumblr media
Alphonse Elric’s head in chibi form, screaming as his body melts
Here it is. My favorite of all of the beta sprites. This thing is so fucking wonderful in part because I have literally no idea what the hell it’s supposed to be. What is this?! What type is it supposed to be? What is it based on? Is it a pre-evo of an existing mon? Why is its mouth parted in an eternal screech? These questions do not necessarily have answers, and I am a sucker for mystery.
10/10 GameFreak please bring this idea to life just so that I can get closure
Tumblr media
Mine! Mine!
So I see what they were going for. It’s a baby form of doduo, with three baby bird heads and a big puff of feathers to make it look like a brood peeking out of a nest. I respect the idea, I do. Too bad it also conjures up images in my head of rat kings and other fused abominations.
5/10 a good idea that didn’t pan out so well
Tumblr media
[Obligatory Undertale Reference]
Sunflora would actually probably be more intimidating if it had an evolution rather than a pre-evo, though. I’m no big fan of sunflora, but I gotta say that this sprite is way better than the one we ended up getting.
6/10 replace existing sunflora with this bullet seed-spewing former skiddo
Tumblr media
The Littlest Babaar
I’ve never really been into elephants as a species. Like they’re cool, but they’re pretty middle of the pack for me in terms of my animal preferences. As a result, I always found donphan kind of disappointing. However, I do like phanpy quite a bit, if only for the fact that it’s goddamn adorable. This sprite is a bit plain, but does bring the cuteness.
6/10 prefer the final design but this one ain’t bad at all
Tumblr media
Donphan
The Don hasn’t changed much at all as far as I can tell. I’ve never trained one in Gen 2, so is its backsprite really just its trunk? If so, hilarious.
5/10 congrats! you exist!
Tumblr media
That’s the statement of the grave mint, Doublemint
I can’t decide if this was intended to be a pre-evo for ghastly or if it’s supposed to be a new ghost type (perhaps later replaced by misdreavus?). Either way it’s an interesting concept, and I can imagine the pokedex entry now: “Born from the souls of fetuses who were eaten in-utero by their siblings. Since they feel they were destined to be twins, they find each other shortly after death and fuse together so that they’ll never be alone again.”
7/10 not the most original design but damn we had a shortage of ghost types back in the day
Tumblr media
Girafarig
Girafarig is one of those pokemon that I always wanted to be more competitively viable because I think it has a unique design and could fill a cool niche. I like that the final design has the tail as an evolutionary measure and that there’s a smaller brain in it, just like some real life creatures. That said, we really missed out on getting a face full of evil uniraffe in the backsprite. Man, this is a real tough choice.
7/10 let’s keep girafarig as is and try out this concept on a different mon
Tumblr media
Smeargle
This version of him seems a bit more…simian than his final, kinda canine design. Not sure if I dig it. Also, have you noticed that Gen 2 felt obligated to have a ditto/mew type mon that could mimic all the other mons? I feel like this concept gets revisited every so often and GameFreak thinks we’re none the wiser.
5/10 flesh beret just isn’t okay
Tumblr media
Coin Kitty
So I know I said I’m against baby pokemon on principle, but the fact that this thing never saw the light of day upsets me so much. It’s so. fucking. CUTE.
10/10 go back in time and replace skitty with this
Tumblr media
Betty Boop’s best friend
I get the feeling that this dark type cat got recycled into the purrloin line, but this one is way cooler imo. It references the old adage of “belling the cat” and I think that this pokemon line could have had some really cool sound-based signature moves (sorta similar to the whismur or jangmo-o lines).
9/10 not feeling the bipedal thing, but still a really neat concept I’d like to see
Tumblr media
Luna
Again, I love the idea of a pokemon based on a fable. I can see why this particular design didn’t get used, given how simple it is and how closely it resembles umbreon if you just glance at it, but I’d love to see this revisited.
7/10 spruce up the design a bit and get back to me
Tumblr media
Politoed’s wild ride
So when I first met politoed I felt he was a bit too…cutesy? Like the rosy cheeks were a bit much. This guy feels a bit more like he belongs in the poliwag line, though he doesn’t look like he’d be as bouncy.
6/10 might replace existing politoed design, might not
Tumblr media
Slowking
Though I prefer slowbro as my yadon evo of choice, slowking is pretty awesome in his own right. Not a big fan of the clown ruffle, but honestly it’s kind of a minor setback all things considered.
7/10 remember how he could randomly talk in the 2nd pokemon movie? That was fucked up.
Tumblr media
Unknown
All of these cool, unsued beta designs, and this one gets to stay in?
1/10 don’t talk to me right now, GameFreak
Tumblr media
Ledyba
It’s ledyba. One of the bug types I’m actually not really all that into. Pretty sure this is the sprite actually used in Gold.
4/10 fine just not for me
Tumblr media
I see you
Ledian’s deal as a superhero is kinda cool, even if I don’t particularly care for the actual design. And I gotta say, it’s preferable to the ever-watching eyes of this thing. Those stars aren’t natural; they’re tattoos for each trainer its killed.
3/10 I feel like I need to go lie down
Tumblr media
My Little Shetland Pony
Clearly this is intended to be a ponyta baby form, and while I commend the idea of a foal version (or maybe a Shetland or something?), you may notice that there is very, very little to set this pre-evo apart from ponyta. Like it and and rapidash aren’t exactly the most daring design-wise, so stripping it to the essentials doesn’t really work.
5/10 this is cute as all hell but it has no reason to exist
Tumblr media
Espeon
Though I get shit all the time for liking espeon the least out of all the eeveelutions, I do still think the design is neat, and the fact that it draws from the nekomata myth is fascinating. Backsprite is a bit janky in the hips department–yet another unrealistic beauty standard, amirite ladies?
7/10 I personally don’t think there are any bad eeveelutions
Tumblr media
Umbreon!
My absolute favorite Gen 2 pokemon! Not many changes between this and the final design, though I will say that this one looks a lot more terrifying–the hole eyes are worse than the red ones somehow. Still, love.
10/10 listen this is my personal rating
Tumblr media
Alolan Shellder
This one is so fascinating to me. It’s obviously the chompy boi from slowbro and slowking, which in the pokedex is referred to as a shellder, but perhaps this is a unique evolution that only happens when it disconnects from the slowpoke? I am really upset this wasn’t actually used in the game, because getting to have this thing on the same team as slowpoke, slowbro, and slowking would have been like when Banjo-Tooie introduced the mechanic that let Banjo and Kazooie split up.
10/10 give me, dammit!
Tumblr media
Garbage Pail Kid
Again with the baby form for a line that already is known for extremely simple designs. Grimer and muk are literally just piles of slime of differing sizes. (Shut up, Alolan forms weren’t a thing til later.) So basically this baby form is fucking adorable, and I’m loving the thing that could be a nose but I’m choosing to interpret as a mouth with a single tooth. It’s just that…who needs this?
7/10 cute, but not necessary by any stretch of imagination
Tumblr media
Are ya feelin’ lucky, punk?
Okay, so this beta is a) way cooler than remoraid ended up being, and b) makes the evolution line make SO MUCH more sense. I can definitely see why it was changed, especially since censor-happy America was a legit market by that point. And I guess the revolver barrel part of the design still persisted in Gen 2, but still.
5/10 booo censorship!
Tumblr media
TANK!
Octillary’s name also makes way more sense with the original tank design. I mean I can kinda see why this changed, but like…Digimon was over there with a creature in the anime just literally called Tankmon who shoots shells at elementary schoolers so I don’t fucking know.
7/10 I like octillary as is, but this is a much more interesting design
Tumblr media
WWE fan
Okay so real talk, I am not the biggest fan of tyrogue’s design, but what was even going on here? What’s with the frog hat? Is it a safety helmet? The general hitmonlee body shape combined with the baby boxing gloves for hitmonchan was pretty cool, but this is not something I’d look at and think “Yes, this will grow up to be a humonoid fighting type.”
5/10 it’s…cute? I guess I just don’t see what’s going on here really
Tumblr media
shaga;lsdkfhahdgajspd[f
NO. JUST NO. THERE ARE TOO MANY THINGS HAPPENING HERE, TOO MANY LIMBS, TOO MANY EYES, JUST NO. HITMONTOP ENDED UP BEING SILLY BUT AT LEAST IT WASN’T THIS MANGLED BODY HORROR NONSENSE.
0/10 for reminding me of claydol and my own mortality
Tumblr media
Pupper
This is going to come as a surprise, but I’m glad they didn’t introduce a baby form of growlithe. The growlithe and arcanine line includes 2 of my top 3 pokemon ever and as cute as this is I don’t think it would fit aesthetically. It looks like a spaniel that doesn’t match the shisa vibe of the growlithe line. That said, I would love to see it as a first form for a different line of perhaps…ground type doggos?
9/10 please give us some floppy ear dog designs, GameFreak! new doggos!
Tumblr media
Like, nya
I do think the hoppip line (except for the last evo) is pretty cute, and this one reminds me a bit of an in-training digimon so I’m liking it. That said, I think the designs we got were better.
6/10 cute but like existing hoppip
Tumblr media
Gardnyar
Again, prefer Skiploom.
5/10 not a fan of the flower for some reason
Tumblr media
Nyancat theme plays in the distance
So I like this better than jumpluff personally, even if the other is probably a more unique design.
5/10 jumpluff’s limbs bother me, but lbr I was never going to train one anyway
Tumblr media
New this Easter
Mr. Mime, I think we can all agree, is an unsettling design. That’s its whole appeal, really. Mime Jr. is cute enough I guess, but this is a tiny clown egg that looks like it’s learning to ice skate for the first time!
6/10 get your derpy clown nose out of here, Mime Jr.
Tumblr media
Agatha’s apprentice
Smoochum is…well, she is. She’s kinda cute, and I think I prefer the finished design to this one since it looks way too similar to grown up jynx. Plus it raises some uncomfortable questions about it being born with ganguro make-up and hair (in a style that looks like E4 Agatha’s for some reason). This smoochum looks like it’d be taken out to sit alone at the bar in the club while wearing booty shorts that read “Mama’s Lil’ Bitch” across the back.
4/10 this makes me uncomfortable, and the hair is too close to Agatha’s
Tumblr media
Which way to the Chao Garden?
Elekid is one of few baby pokemon I like, but hot damn this thing is adorable. It looks like a tiny, wingless bee with a halo.
7/10 can this be recycled as something else?
Tumblr media
Bart Simpson
Really what keeps me from fully embracing the magmar line is largely the fact that they all have butts on their heads. These spikes are way more appealing to me, and so I would have loved having this one in the game.
8/10 is it still too late to redesign magby?
Tumblr media
Bellossom
Not too many changes from the beta. I am digging the shoujo sparkles going on around her, haha.
6/10 not a big bellossom fan but a well-design pokemon nonetheless
Tumblr media
Audrey III
Nope, I don’t like this, no sir. Where would this even go in the evo line? Is it supposed to be an alternative to victreebel? Cause this isn’t much better, guys.
1/10 I will give it one point since it looks like it could cut a rug on the dance floor
Tumblr media
Miltank
A good, solid pokemon I’m pretty fond of (once I got over my salt from the Whitney battle). I like her as a female counterpart to tauros. Nothing too astounding but still fun and cute.
8/10
Tumblr media
Fire Seal
I feel like there’s folklore here, but my tired brain isn’t coming up with anything at the moment, sadly. Not a really detailed design but those tend to be more my favorites anyway. Trying to figure out what this was replaced by in the final game but I’m having a tough time figuring it out.
7/10 we have a lot of seals, but this is the only FIRE seal
Tumblr media
Delibird
I see we chose the path with more subtlety in the end.
4/10 not really a big fan of delibird
Tumblr media
Hanshin Hopeful
Okay, I know I said earlier that the screaming pile of goo was my favorite, but this line is also my favorite out of these beta designs. This one upsets me because this would have been such a great cultural addition! Osaka (represented by Goldinrod City in the games) has a baseball team called the Hanshin Tigers, which everyone in the area is a fervent fan of. Not only is this unbearably cute, it could have been hanging out in like a little baseball stadium area or something in or around Goldinrod.
10/10 how could you leave this out?!
Tumblr media
Nandeyanen!!
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Why did I not get this?! The Akihabara of Osaka is even called “DenDen Town” (Electric Town)!
10/10 we’ve missed our chance and now amends cannot be made
Tumblr media
Talk to the wing
Is this supposed to be a farfetch’d evolution?! It doesn’t make a ton of sense aside from the waterfowl connection, but like…how pissed would you be if you were farfetch’d? This is kinda cool. I’m not super into swans or anything, but the masquerade/crime fighter mask is a neat detail.
5/10 I could see this being used interestingly, even if I’d probably not use it
Tumblr media
Hitori Kakurenbou
I love this concept. Look at this! I know it was basically recycled for shuppet’s line, but this is so much more hardcore. Now this is a pokemon that can use curse appropriately.
10/10 personally like this one better than shuppet, if I’m being honest
Tumblr media
Hsien-ko
This is the most Chinese pokemon since arcanine, oh my god. It’s a panda jiangshi. A panda jiangshi! Imagine it hopping after you adorably, ready to leech life you to death.
9/10 it’s not as cute as the pre-evolution, but still–panda jiangshi!!!
Tumblr media
Murkrow
Not a lot of changes going on here either, aside from the more obvious witch’s hat design. Unsure if I like this one better or regular murkrow.
7/10 good flappy friend
Tumblr media
*uncomfortable cough*
Blissey’s design is a bit too busy and frilly for my tastes, but it’s certainly a lot more acceptable than this. I get what they were going for: a heart on top of its head to represent healing and whatnot, but it just came out so…so yonic in nature that I have to wonder about the person responsible for this design.
1/10 not entirely awful but good lord
Tumblr media
Scisor
Here’s the boi, only this time with eyes on his little crab claws! It’s cute but later got used for hydregion instead, and I dunno, I kind of prefer scisor as is. Still think scyther looks cooler, but a good strudy boi.
6/10 for the puppet shows it could give to entertain all the baby forms on this sprite sheet
Tumblr media
Pinsir Noh Pinching
Here’s your fave, anon! You’re right that it seems to have a blank Noh-like mask on its face, as if a huge pinching bug wasn’t terrifying enough for you. That said, I kind of like the really creepy vibe, and poor pinsir got left in the dirt by his rival scyther once Gen 2 hit and gave scyther an evolution but nothing for his clampy comrade.
6/10 we could still get a pinsir evolution, guys
Tumblr media
Houndour!
As you might expect of me, the houndour line is a close second to umbreon for Jess’s Favorite Gen 2 Pokemon. It combines two types I love, fire and dark, into this edgy but adorable package–what could I not love about it? This design is actually even better than the final one, because look at that sick-ass spine highlighting the ribs that got left in!
10/10 you cannot half ass edge; that misses the point
Tumblr media
Houndoom!
Houndoom, meanwhile, looks pretty much as I remember him in Gold. And there’s nothing wrong with that–his design is fucking amazing. Man, kids, back in the metagame in Gen 2, houndoom was firmly in the top tier. Ah, I remember those days…
10/10 like a shark, houndoom has passed through decades without major tinkering to its evolutionary design
Tumblr media
Baby yeti
Long before froslass burst onto the scene, this little bundle of deceptively charming horror could have been the first ice/ghost type. Yes, yes, it’s very adorable upon initial inspection, but once you look a bit deeper, you notice that the pokemon itself is actually black as night, with two piercing Jawa eyes, and the happy fur coat is another creature that’s been skinned and put on like a hoodie. Amazing.
10/10 I’ll take four
Tumblr media
Wampa
I started on Star Wars references in the last entry and I gotta keep it going. Anyway, the evolution of tiny, arctic Buffalo Bill up there is even more fearsome, with claws and pupils! It’s even somehow found a way to make its fur covering evolve with it, having it sprout huge fangs (yeah I know, adults probably hunt larger creatures for clothing, but let me have this).
10/10 this so should have been a thing
Tumblr media
Pon de Lion
I wonder if perhaps this design was meant to be an alternate form or evolution of porygon, or if this was an entirely different species based on toys (presumably to pad out the number of steel types). It’s an interesting idea, certainly, but I 100% get why this design got scrapped–it was a lawsuit from Mr. Donut waiting to happen.
Tumblr media
Ugh
Did you know that horses produce 10 gallons of saliva a day? I now do thanks to Nate quizzing us over vacation last weekend to see if we could tell the difference between real animals and pokemon based on factoids. Now, lickilicky was not a new evolution I embraced with open arms, but man, it could have been so much worse.
2/10 I can’t say there’s no appeal (that mustache is great) but it just looks slimy and no thanks
Tumblr media
Steelix
It’s steelix, unchanged from this beta to the final game.
7/10 I just think it’s neat
Tumblr media
Sunken Master
I would like kingdra so, so much more if this is what it looked like.
9/10 this is goddamn cool and no one can convince me otherwise
Tumblr media
Shadow the Edgedog
I’m not gonna lie, I fucking love this stupid design. It’s an electric dog with super sayain hair.
10/10 fuck you, I do what I want
Tumblr media
Oscar Myer
Do I find this design cute? Yes. Do I personally like it more than entei’s? Yes. Do I think it’s a better design than entei? No. It’s a bit too plain to really give off that legendary feel, but for me? I’d totally take this in a game. Also at least the last two have actually looked like dogs. The Legendary “Dogs” we got were a tiger, a lion/bear hybrid, and whatever the hell suicune is supposed to be.
8/10 I am a simple woman with simple needs
Tumblr media
Jen Kira
I see people likening this design to Nina Tucker, but I actually don’t see that. It looks more to me like a special edition My Little Pony toy from the 80s released to promote The Dark Crystal. I dig it, even if it’s my least favorite of the three OG doggos.
8/10 if only some of the pizzazz of this design was afforded to fiery boi up there and we’d be onto something
Tumblr media
Rook
This weasel/otter type thing is really cute, and perhaps was a concept idea for what later became sentret? I’d say I would want to see it again, but I kind of get the feeling we already did get the concept revived in the mienfoo line.
6/10 glad we got to see this one again
Tumblr media
Ho-oh
Doesn’t seem too different from the sprite in the final game, and still a good design. That said though, I’m noticing that there’s no lugia in these beta sprites. What the fuck is that?!
7/10 got bros over this ho(-oh)
Tumblr media
Togepi
This little bugger was introduced so early in the anime that I’m not surprised that its design was firmed up by the time the demo came out. Togepi’s okay I guess, but again I don’t really tend to like baby pokemon and I got kind of over-exposed to it in the anime.
6/10 cute but not a fave
Tumblr media
Snubble
SNUB PARTY!! Snubs has the dubious honor of being the only dog pokemon I actively dislike. I like granbull so I can put up with it temporarily to get it to evolve, but this does a lot of things on my Dislike Checklist: aggressively pink, check; clown ruffle, check; appears to be wearing a dress, check.
4/10 not a fan
Tumblr media
Boscoe
This early version of aipom looks like Marsupilami if it had been created by the Fleischer brothers. Something about this design just isn’t Right, but I can’t put my finger on it. I think it’s the 1930s American animation style face combined with walking on all fours? Either way it creeps me out.
3/10 though aipom is a very middle-of-the-road pokemon for me, it’s a helluva lot better than this abomination
Tumblr media
Leafeon Prime
If you had asked us kid pokemon fans back in the days of Gen I what pokemon we’d most like to see in the future, I imagine “grass type eeveelution” was near the top for many of them. It just made sense–you had the leaf stone just sitting around, not reacting to your eevee, and it was so blatantly conspicuous. I had my own grass type eeveelution design I’d made called “Thorneon”, the design of which I might share at some point, and I was far from the only one.
So yeah, I’d have appreciated this a LOT in Gen 2. I was disappointed it wasn’t introduced in Gen 2. However, promises of a grass type eeveelution in Gen 4 got me to finally pull the trigger on getting a DS to play Diamond and Pearl, and that turned out to be an execellent decision. So maybe it was better that they kept this idea incubating for a bit longer.
10/10 I like leafeon and I also like this design–particularly like the vine bits that look like scars
And so there you have it! All 100 beta sprites reveiwed by yours truly.
Hope it was worth the wait, anon!

My Two Coins:  My argument on Defense

“Why didn't you complain about the previous third versions/sequels/whatever that did the same thing? That shows you are biased against Gen VII.“
I’m saying it Once and I’m saying it again.... BIAS MY@$$!!!
Welcome ladies and gentlemen. You've found a wild Jewelwriter.
And I’ve been given this a lot lately with some of my more personal allies and I feel like I have got to defend myself once again.  Though it’ll be in response to each of the criticism that I’ve been sent my way along with extra notes to go with my replies.
=1=
"The removal could be to like you stated, the Framerate is poor. It also doesn't help that they weren't even popular in the first place. You queue for a triple or rotation battle in previous generations and you can be sitting there for maybe 30-40 minutes? Think about it, the game is all 3d, that is a LOT of space being used up and compressed for code and other information."
The patience some people have is sad when I look at it.  (Though makes me wish that my time would have been included for that)  I've considered that 3d animation takes time but at times the Pokemon have vanished when attacks are used...trainer included.  So it could have worked still to a degree.  This is the most bendable of points since the programming isn't easy.
-
And I mean it as the Programming that probably is going to be a problem when trying to get certain things into a certain space but then again they had managed to do it before to fit a number of details into the game so it isn’t as easy to do but it is possible if by working edges to smooth them out.
=2=
"Super Training was bullshit and I never used it. The change of pace for Island Trials was due to the face Alolan didn't follow the rest of the world in the system. The Gen I pandering is to be excepted as the region is neighbors with Kanto. The Ultra Beasts were an interesting twist on Pokémon Legendaries/Mythicals And really, the whole story. I'm sorry to say this, but it sounds like she is bitching over spilled milk, crying because she wanted another dull Pokémon Game.”
Super Training wasn't bs because it honestly will tell you what EVs you are giving which is a lot more than what the islands are doing.
Doesn't excuse how they aren't as filling as the trainer battles and Gym battles.  The fact would be one of the more filling battles that were given with the gyms was oddly a Gen 3 battle (the 7th one oddly...better known in Emerald for having 4 Pokemon to worry about.) so in a way I wasn't in as much a headache with the Gym system and more with the Trials.
I might as well see Mt Moon with how that seems to be that close to Kanto with all those Pokes.  I mean there are other generations that deserve some love and barely got any (Gen 5 especially...I mean Audino for the only mega poke?  And I could count nearly 19 of them before you get through half the islands.) so it would help to see more mon that isn't just restricted to Gen 1 remixes?
Cosmog was an interesting concept.  The Ultra Beast had some promise, but the story was about LILLY and her mostly needing your help to find answers while you randomly get the story pointed to you instead of the main goal of it being on you when the boring part of her quest kicks in.   Followed by Edgy the wannabe rival that tries to be the blue you wanted at the last minute when the Professor did a better job of that and he was more interested in seeing you grow out of anyone else.  And that's on top of the fact that I accepted that Hau wasn't going to be the strong battler rival of the game.  So excuse me for being factual on something that was done wrong and judged the game on its own before comparing it to the rest of the legacy which this is the weakest by far.
-
And how can one defend this one since they literally have you working around everyone else and barely have anyone really interested in you as a true trainer to watch grow sans the professor when you begin.  Hau is the friendly fighter who’s just trying to grow beyond his Grandpa, Edge Prince Gladion is a last-minute fighter using an apparent god fighting Pokemon that apparently got a type power up stronger than yours.  At least the professor fights you on your level of sorts.  Ultra Beasts storyline kind of is left to the aftergame and barely anything really revealed about them.  The only one that kind of gets development before you get it is Cosmog who kind of goes with you all over (though it tells you something when Lilly is able to carry Cosmoem) so it’s workable.
=3=
“Seriously, Sun and Moon got me back into series after the disappoint of X/Y. I liked the story, but at the same time, X/Y was just boring outside of it. Same old same old. I mean, I love it when you beat the champion and then the old King himself AZ appears and challenges you. It just seems she hates everything new they are trying to do."
I honestly felt more enlightened to Pokemon thanks to Black and White and X and Y felt like more the most completed revival of the series that people wanted out of the Black and White.  And sure I understand there are risk and reward for trying something new but when the new fails it is time to call it out on THAT and at least wait to see if it gets better or worst.  I'm kind of happy that you can hatch 19-24 eggs in one time, happy you can get rare items and stones to sell and use for your Pokemon to evolve, and I'm happy that they added more ways to battle with the Battle Royal and made it that you are the champion and are defending your belt against different trainers instead of just taking on the same foe again (Fun fact: for the mission of that sort I took it on and did it 5 times which I took on Hau, The Dragon Rocker, the Professor, Team Skull's former babysitter, and the kid on route 1. :P ) so excuse me for seeing the negatives outway the positives but when it is true... it is flipping true.
-
And I’m not kidding about it since I had to hunt for the reasons why I liked Gen 7 instead of finding it flowing out like a river of water.  If Orre was more memorable than alola then there’s a problem.
=4=
"Platinum and Emerald were done in literally half of a year. And B2W2 had worse footing then Sun and Moon. If that is not a paste job, I dunno what is anymore. I'm just going to stand on my ground of that, a majority of the Pokémon Community is spoiled. I mean, look at Kirby games. Most of them are nearly similar in gameplay and theme but always get extreme praise. There is very little hate towards it, so why on God's Green Earth is Pokémon getting it?"
-.- (GOD that is so incorrect.) Time for a bit of a time check...
Gen 1: September 28th, 1998 Yellow: October 19th, 1999 ({=Unexpected here.  Then again I was moving during this time.)
Gen 2: October 15th, 2000 Crystal: July 29th, 2001 ({= Here is under a year.)
Gen 3: March 17th, 2003 Emerald:  May 1st, 2005
Gen 4: April 22nd, 2007 Platinum: March 22nd, 2009
Gen 5:  March 6th, 2011 B2/W2:  October 7th, 2012
Gen 6: October 12th, 2013 ({= I had to flinch at how short this date was.) ORAS:  November 21st, 2014 ({= Only thing comparable for the time.)
Gen 7: November 18th, 2016 Ultra S/Ultra M: November 17th, 2017
They only did going under a year twice... and that's before the 3rd comes up.   I'm one of the few that try to make my own Pokemon from the ground up and the only thing I hate worst than this generation is what is flipping going with Smogon so think of it like this: I might hate Gen 7 (Which might not change my mind when the newest of it comes out and I got to work with it.) but I rather play with that than step anywhere near Smogon at all costs.  Sure competitive Pokemon is a mess but I would want that to grow and be more diverse than what I'm seeing from the worst of the community which is in that area of toddlers.
-
And I’m being truthful here.  I REALLY despise Smogon with such a fury that it makes My gen 7 hate I got to look like a cake compared to a Snorlax dinner that is the fury I have for Smogon.
=
And that’s EACH and every counterpoint and I will still defend my argument to the end since it is under a year...and in a way, I expected more in a way from Game Freak, The Pokemon Company, and the people that know their history and support them.  I might be one voice but after all the things that went wrong with this one I’ll be glad to get out of vacation mode in Pokemon.  Write to me if you feel like I’m write, right, wrong, or mixed in some way.  After all THIS is a text box.
As for me... this wild one runs away!

5: Snivy, Tepig, or Oshawott?
I love all of them honestly... but I'm gonna go with Snivy because he was my starter in my first gen 5 game. Also I have a little snivy figurine hanging on my wall. Well, he's hanging off of a necklace that's hanging off my shelves but it's right next to my wall so I'm counting it.
9: Flareon, Jolteon, or Vaporeon?
Hmm... alright this is a toss-up again. But honestly, Go has made me a little bitter to Vaporeon because of how overpowered they are. And common. Evolving your Eevee in Go, basically you're undoubtedly gonna get a Vaporeon unless you're using the name trick, and that only works once, so... anyway, Flareon looks the fluffiest and doesn't get a lot of love, so I'll go with it. Fun fact, for a while I was gonna use it as my pokesona, but this was back when I was like 14 so. Amazing, right? Nowadays I have this ursa... which honestly i didn’t pick so much as people assumed it of me cause my regular fursona’s a bear but yeah whatever anyway
Already did 16
30: Zubat, Woobat, or Noibat?
Zubat are absolutely adorable, but I'm going with Noisebat.
51: Ampharos or Luxray?
Luxray. Luuuxray. Big electric kitty. He's adorable. And, honestly, powerful as hell too. But mostly cute! Used one in my first gen 4 playthrough. I also still have Jinx's one I got through Wonder Trade named Socks and I love him.
95: Lance, Steven, Cynthia, Alder, or Diantha?
Can I go with Wallace on this? I just love his style so much. I even remember changing his title in my romhack, so he was "The Great Wallace" instead of just "Champion Wallace." (That said, I changed a lot of titles, so.) I like him a lot more than the rest anyway. Lance was kinda bland, honestly. Steven, I have personal reasons to dislike. Cynthia was cool but it was clear someone in Game Freak had a huge hard on for her because she appeared in so many games in a row like... nobody else has gotten that treatment. Alder and Iris were also blandish but I blame BW's mediocre localization/translation for that. And Diantha? Alright I take back everything I said about the other three being bland because holy shit Diantha was an absolute wasted opportunity. She could have been so cool. Instead she got like ... a total of three appearances and six lines of dialog.

34: Gyarados or Milotic?
Gyarados. Mostly because I like Magikarp more. Always have. I'm glad they got a surge of popularity recently. Anyway, despite that, I'm 100% disappointed Milotic didn't get a Mega. It should.
46: Tyrannitar, Flygon, or Salamence?
Salamence. I love Salamence. I don't talk about 'em a lot, but really, they're in my top favorites. Especially since I headcanon them being only the size of a large dog. Y'see, their height is listed as 4'11" but it never explained how it was measured. Was it measured feet to shoulder? Wingspan? Snout to tail? Never explained. So depending on how that measurement is taken, they really could be the size of a large dog. And the games aren't really any help since Pokemon aren't always to scale. Anyway. Just imagine Salamence acting like a dog. You'll grow to love it too.
Already did 51.
55: Gardevior or Gothitelle?
Gardevior tbh. I don't really have much of a reason. Lame, I know, but.

Already did 4.
6: Chespin, Fennekin, or Froakie?
Chespin! They're li'l cuties that grow into huge big cuties! With shields! And it has an equally cool shiny, too. I'll admit I'm disappointed by the other two's shiny forms. (You know that black variant for Greninja in Smash? Yeah. That shoulda been its shiny form, with the cream belly instead of all black.) Anyway, Chespin kinda comes out of left field because a lot of my choices for starters are the ones I picked the first time I played those games, but I actually picked Froakie the first time I played gen 6... but somehow Chesnaught wiggled his way up to my favorites so.
19: Nidoking or Nidoqueen?
Nidoking. Firstly, he's good competitively - scarily so. People rarely ever expect him... but BAM. Also, I hold a dumb grudge against Nidoqueen thanks to Mystery Dungeon. I kept running into horrible ones in one dungeon or another that repeatedly knocked me out with earthquake and it pissed me off.
83: Fairy or Dragon?
hmm. uh... hm. I kinda like dragon better, but I think there's more fairy types in my favorites than dragons...
---
1: Bulbasaur, Charamander, or Squirtle?
ALL THREE. ALL OF THEM. GIVE THEM TO ME. I love them all equally. But I did pick Charmander first in Red, Fire Red, and Y... (Bulbasaur in Go, though.)
10: Umbreon or Espeon?
uhh uhh uuuuhh... both. i love them both. and for a very good reason - Colosseum. That said a while ago i made an ask meme like, “which eeveelution do i remind you of?” and a lot of people said umbreon. so i guess there’s that.
Already did 16. Gosh y'all making me want to use a politoed really bad. Maybe I'll force one into that HG game I'm... kinda currently playing. (I started it back like, last June, been playing it every now and then...)
65: Lugia or Ho-Oh?
Ho-oh is a gay icon but I'm gonna go with sea dragon bird. I like the ocean. That's uh... that's my excuse.
97: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, or Kalos?
Clearly this was written at least a year ago lmao anyway. Also this is blatant Orre erasure. ORRE ORRE ORRE ORRE ORRE ORRE ORRE

1-5: Cradily get Leech Seed
For serious though:
1. Less of a focus on Lucario/Charizard/traditionally “cool”/popular Pokemon. Give the spotlight to some of the lesser-known Pokemon, give them a chance to shine.
2. Following up on that, less of a focus on Gen 1. There was a game that took place at least partially in Kanto until Generation 5, and they never advanced or expanded on it at all. If we do go back to Kanto, I want to see it as a new, different place. Maybe over the nearly two decades since we first saw it, other trainers have brought over new Pokemon and technology. Cinnabar exploded for God’s sake! This would be the perfect excuse to introduce Kanto variants of foreign Pokemon, like Alola did. I wanna see the world and characters grow over the years!
3. Evolving during battles. One of the best parts of the anime is whenever a Pokemon is in a jam, but they manage to pull through and permanently power themselves up by evolving. There’s really no reason at this point they couldn’t implement this in the games. It wouldn’t affect competitive play, since you don’t earn EXP in those. It’d be a solely in-game thing, and I think it’d be really cool. If a Pokemon reaches the level it evolves at during battle, then it should have the option to do so. Maybe it even gets a cool music change, like the Gym battles in Gen 5!
4. Openly LGBT+ characters. Skyla/Elesa are my personal favorites, but there are so many characters in Pokemon who are coded in ways that read as Not Being CisHet. Blue, Red, Erika, Will, Wallace, Lisia, Steven, Burgh, Marlon, Lillie, and Hapu are the named ones I can think of just off the top of my head, and seeing them or any other characters be as openly gay as characters like Norman or Lenora are openly straight would be amazing.
5. Cradily get Leech Seed
