Once he was off the country roads and could get a signal again, Xichen called Sizhui to let him know, "I'm bringing a guest back with me." He could very nearly hear Sizhui blinking. "From Carp Manor? Is Ms. Jiang visiting? I can make up the guest room on the ground floor so she doesn't need to manage the stairs, if that'd help." "Not Ms. Jiang, no, although that's a very thoughtful offer. I, ah." Xichen paused, trying to figure out how to phrase his request, while in the passenger's seat next to him Meng Yao's eyes watched with some interest. The rest of him was mostly a vaguely humanoid cloud, which he'd said was the easiest visible state for him. "I need you and Jingyi to take down the spirit exclusion wards. We'll put them back up when I arrive, but I'll need to add in some exceptions." More audible blinking before Sizhui replied. "You're…bringing home a ghost, aren't you." "Very perceptive of you, Sizhui." "Thank you, bobo, but I wouldn't really say so? It's just sort of the fashionable thing now, all of the best exorcists are friends with ghosts. Or. Whatever Mr. Wei is." "I think he's currently insisting on 'eldritch horror.' In any case, please take down the wards, I'll introduce you when we arrive."

Writing patterns

Rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern! Tagged by @demonscantgothere ❤️

1. After months of searching, Wuyan had finally brought Di Feisheng a clue. [Perchance to Live, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Li Lianhua/Di Feisheng. A descriptive opening that orients the reader as to where in canon it starts.]

2. Lan Qiren woke in the middle of the night. [The Wild Charge, The Untamed, Lan Qiren/Wen Ruohan. A short action sentence to begin an adventure.]

3. Waves lapped at his legs, stinging a little on the scrapes and cuts. [What good did it do, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Li Lianhua/Li Xiangyi. A short descriptive sentence, orienting within a canon scene.]

4. "Unhand her." [Tomorrow Has Promise, the Untamed, Qin Su/Wen Qing. Dialog! Jumping into the middle of the action.]

5. "The Jinyuan alliance is so evil!" Xiao Zijin cried, flourishing his sword. [Moon and Wind, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Di Feisheng/Li Lianhua. Dialog again. Setting the scene for a pre-canon conflict between the ship.]

6. "You are on edge tonight," Gu Xuanqing observed, lifting a hand and tracing Li Yunzhen's cheek, rubbing a thumb over the dark circles under her eye. [To Give Each Other the World, 长公主在上 Eldest Princess Above. Dialog. Getting to know the ship and where they stand with each other.]

7. "Maeglin!" [Another Way, the Silmarillion, Maeglin/Celebrimbor. Dialog. Tells who the fic is about right away.]

8. Wei Wuxian didn't want to be here. [Three Sighs, the Untamed, Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji/Wen Qing. A mood description.]

9. Kingsley Shacklebolt woke up early, while it was still dark. [The people in your life who want you in theirs, Harry Potter, Kingsley/Severus. A mild action sentence.]

10. Li Lianhua did not take his eyes off the sea. [A Good Scheme, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Di Feisheng/Li Lianhua/Fang Duobing. Another line to orient on the canon beach scene, which apparently all my MLC fics have in common 😂]

Conclusion: Alternating between scene description, action, and dialog. Not much in common other than that they are all short and (I like to think) punchy.

Writing Patterns

Thank you to @omgpurplefattie for the tag (or the equivalent thereof, lol)! I'll put the first sentences of my last ten ao3 works (in order of most recent posting to least recent) and see if I can tell any patterns. Because I want to I'll also put the last sentences because I know there are some patterns there.

01. i think want is in the shape of you (my can't have nice things fanghua post-canon piece)

He’s not supposed to be warm. 

In the dark, Li Lianhua admits to himself the words he can’t say yet: Fang Xiaobao, I want you.

02. only for you (dom4dom fanghua smut)

He curls his fingers in the hair at the back of his neck.

“Only for you,” He says as their lips meet, “Only for you, Lianhua.”

03. and they were underwater scientists (liansanjiao as underwater seahorse researchers)

Fang Duobing sighs.

“Come on, let’s go home.”

04. fool me thrice (liansanjiao modern au hilarious miscommunication on who's dating who)

Fang Duobing surfaces beside him and shakes the water out of his hair like a dog.

His love for their little life overflows, and he really couldn’t be happy without them.

05. wake (fdb starts wearing his hair like llh used to)

He starts wearing his hair like Li Lianhua’s.

“Do you see it now?” Di Feisheng whispers back, “Fang Xiaobao, you’re precious.”

06. got me riding that edge (swallow me down) (the liansanjiao fic I wrote because I learned what snowballing was)

Di Feisheng is going to be the death of him.

He gets a pillow to the face for his troubles.

07. five scenes with a cat (in which llh misses fdb and acquires a cat)

Li Lianhua is not worried.

And, because he can’t help himself, he says, teasingly, “You wouldn’t happen to know where my cat went, do you?”

08. let me too (my ultimate voyeur!llh fic)

Later he will remember how he’d bitten down into the flesh of his chest to muffle his whines.

“Okay fine, yes, you can watch again! Just stop talking about it!”

09. elegy sound (my ghost!llh fic)

When he wakes there is no sun.

“You said,” He says, smiling, “That if I could bring people back to life you’d take my family name. I think you and A-Fei should both be Li now.”

10. dress me up how you like it (fdb wears a dress and liansanjiao fuck horny about it)

By the time the package comes, three weeks and five days later, Fang Duobing has completely forgotten about the bet.

When he wakes up the next morning he has a splitting headache and no memories of the previous night, and from where he’s lying on top of Di Feisheng he can see Li Lianhua stumble through the door.

Patterns:

First sentences are usually a sensation, an action, or an emotion

Likewise they also tend to set up a central feature of the fic or at least some exposition

Last sentences usually summarise the whole of the fic neatly to tie it off

They also are either sweet or humorous

I was actually surprised that it turned out that I had written - much less posted - enough mlc fics that they'd be this entire post. I thought for sure I was going to get down to the temeraire laurence/napoleon fic that I posted *checks* September of 2022 but nope.

Here are two lines from a fic I started last year which still needs a lot of work before it can be posted:

Smirking, Di Feisheng pulls a rabbit out of his sleeve and throws it onto the table.

Fang Duobing looks on, not contributing much to the conversation except for some encouraging nods and slight smiles, and feels his heart ease little by little; the old rhythms of family dinner mingling with newly devoted looks between his aunt and her quietly besotted lover, with excited cooing when the wet nurse brings Xiao Xian to her mother to soothe.

I discovered that during one occasion when Li Lianhua and Fang Duobing were discussing Li Xiangyi, Li Lianhua said that Yun Biqiu was an avid reader and deeply inspired by philosophy (e. g. Confucian thought). Li Xiangyi was annoyed by it to the point that he issued an order to prevent Biqiu's disciples from studying. Therefore, most of his disciples are illiterate:))))))))))))))))

can you parallel park? my driving instrutor taught me how to last week! Whether I can do it again is another question

a job you had that would surprise people? I moved to Greece and worked there for 9 months last year! The job itself isn't surprising but the fact that I went and did it in another country that doesn't have english as a first language surprised uhhh me tbh (I now am still dealing with Greek bureaucracy though 0/10)

do you think aliens are real? I guess they must be some form of life somewhere but I don't think humans will find it any time soon

can you drive a manual car? NO when I was signing up for driving lessons I was like 'automatic or nothing' I've already put off learning for like 8 years and there's a Reason for that lmao

what's your guilty pleasure? I don't think people should feel guilty for enjoying things. That being said: one of my favourite films is Alexander (2004) and I should feel guilty about that lets be real it's actually really REALLY bad

favourite type of music? spotify wrapped informed me my top genre was 'new wave' which is probably correct but I also like Queen and whatever The Amazing Devil have got going on

do you like puzzles? jigsaw puzzles? eh they're ok. sudoku/crosswords/etc? HELL YES this is how I love to waste spend my time

any phobias? creepy dolls including those mannequins you get in museum exhibits (I'm less bad now but child me was SO freaked out); spiders but not if they're just chilling

favourite childhood sport? I fenced! I was not good at it but hitting people with swords is what I personally consider a good time

do you talk to yourself? all the time if there's no one else around

what movie(s) do you adore? my top childhood films which I still also count as my top films now are Hoodwinked! and Looney Tunes: Back in Action. Endlessly quoted in our house

coffee or tea? ew. hot chocolate

first thing you wanted to be growing up? probably a ballerina? that ambition didn't last long but the lessons lasted longer
