Told ya' I'd get back to posting more Carol and the End of the World eventually! Here's some colour keys of the boss' office: something we discussed early on was how the closed blinds in his office were representative of his mental state and feelings towards the end of the world - literally blocking Keppler out of his view, and we wanted that to be clearly reflected in the lighting of the space even when they weren't on-screen, which is what we were exploring here.
One of my favourite silly little details: a framed photo of Business Men Doing Business Things! Since the lineart I was provided was just a rough, it didn't have a design in the frame, so I just improvised, ha ha - pretty sure we changed it in the final design, though, so enjoy this little peek behind the curtains! Thanks for looking, and watch Carol & the End of the World on Netflix if you haven't already:

Shinra canonically has an HR department apparently, and I have to wonder if it's an honest to the gods "Carol from HR" moment

Working duck? The “Working Duck” episode of “The Looney Tunes Show” explored Daffy’s meteoric rise from “muffin man” to “CEO.”

they """strongly encourage""" that i go into the office once a week because they feel it is important for """collaboration""" (which is a wildly transparent lie considering i don't do anything with anyone & all my work gets done faster when there's no one else around. but i digress) so i've decided to get here before anyone else, pick a desk that's tucked away out of sight and not tell anyone i'm here.

Another blink-and-you-miss-it background from episode one of Carol and the End of the World: this time from the montage of abandoned floors right before Carol discovers the 19th floor at the end of the episode. This was the first and only background I painted from that sequence to set the tone for the other shots. Not only did I want the abandoned interior to contrast the warmth of the elevator Carol is standing in, but I also wanted the darkness to contrast the bright, fluorescent lights of the 19th floor, while still being similar enough to feel like it's part of the same building. every time I watch the states at the job interview video, I always am incapable of getting over the fact that Loui was really the only state that can handle living in a society and being normal. Nothing but respect for my employee of the month

Love American capitalism, I've been working all week with covid (remote luckily) because I don't get any PTO until October at my new job (and yes all our sick and vacation time is combined, because that makes sense). I was out Tuesday because I was completely out of my mind with fever, so they'll be docking my pay. Also the best thing for getting better is napping but obviously I can't do that because I have to be signed in to Microsoft bloody Teams. And I can't sleep through the night because my throat is absolutely shredded from coughing up all the gunk in my lungs so I wake up in agony feeling like I've just had another tonsillectomy every 3-4 hours. So, you know, I'm not sleeping, I've gotten a little better but not much.
It's so stupid that you're just expected to not get sick for the first 90 days of a new job. It's so stupid that at most jobs in the US you're either allowed 5 total days a year to be sick and then they take away your vacation time and then when they've taken all 5-10 days of that they dock your paycheck OR they skip the first step and move right along to taking away vacation time. It's so stupid that the alternative or sometimes consequence is working when you're sick, which just makes you sicker longer and more susceptible to getting sick with something else.

As a reminder for those having another giant anti-colonialist bender enjoying your weekend, Abstergo Industries offices will be open on Monday, September 19th. You are expected to come in if you are typically expected to work on Mondays and have not previously put in for out of office time. And no, you may not use “waiting in the funeral queue” as an excuse to be late or skip work entirely. I’m sure top corporate execs will be at the Queen’s funeral, but clearly you’re not one of them if you’re getting this memo.
We have asked our cafe and cafeteria staff to be mindful of their selections of food and ambient music to be mindful of those who will be paying their silent respect for the Queen. If you are part of our food and hospitality staff, please do not throw these instructions away or otherwise disregard them. We’re talking to you, lobby barista. Our intern may like your custom “The Royal Bitch is Dead” playlist but we’re already on thin ice with corporate after that getting locked in our office thing.
Finally, Research has reported that they’ve misplaced an Apple of Eden again. It’s probably a clerical error like last time, but please report if you’ve seen it or heard of where it can be. Research was very tight-lipped as to what might happen if they don’t retrieve it in time, but hinted it might be like the incident in Rome in December 2012. Which does not help us because all that information is behind a firewall that we can’t even access. Maybe I should put the intern to work on that instead of him being on TikTok all day.
Please enjoy your weekend! And if you have any questions, let us know. Don’t let us know. I got the short stick in being on call this weekend and I just want to drink frozen margaritas in peace.
- HR
