In 2011 I drastically reduced my DWJ book intake to dripfeed levels, so it was only in the 2024 new year that I finally decided to read Deep Secret. My god - out of all her books this seems targeted at me personally? Stressed late-20-somethings, making fools of oneself in vicinity of fav authors, artist alleys?? Also, blatant unmistakable LGBT-rep??? I can't believe I slept on this one for so long!!! Definitely putting it on the upper tiers of my DWJ bookshelf.

Anyway, here's some designs I've whipped up for the characters! As always, might tweak 'em if ever I draw more in the future, but that's what's fun about figuring out character designs. Rob in particular is a joy to me.

They said heartbreak was for your twenties. You were told it would build character. That the first one was unavoidable, that it would feel unbearable but you'd make it out alive. That your friends would get you through it, terrible rom-coms and tubs of ice-cream accompanying your nights. They said you'd be okay eventually.

What they didn't tell you though, was how bad your heart would ache, nearly ripping itself out of your chest. They didn't mention how the hole she had left would tear itself open just a little bit more each time you saw her at her last few practices. No one spoke a word about how the nights you spent laying together, talking about your future at United would become a distant memory, one you desperately wished to forget yet wanted to sear into the cracks of your soul.

Your hometown friends reassured you they would be with you every step of the way. Teammates you both shared promised they wouldn't pick sides, choosing instead to support the both of you the best they could. Both mentioned that they wouldn't let you suffer alone, neither of you, being there for you in every and any way possible.

Yet, when the nights came, and you longed to be solely in her arms, chasing the familiar strawberry scent that was nearly faded from your shirts, you knew they couldn't help you. Not when the only person you craved, longed for, needed, was the one person who didn't stick around. Not when she decided that moving three hours away was something worth throwing your relationship away over. Not when she took your heart with her, leaving you with just damaged and bruised tissue.

And when the mornings came and no one was there to wake you up, cold sheets, her forgotten favourite t-shirt and an abandoned apartment your only companions, you gently shushed your shattered heart.

Without fail, like the countless mornings of the past few months, you let yourself fall back into the sheets, wishing that she was here beside you. That she hadn't actually left and it was just a terrible nightmare. You wished that she had stayed. That you could've worked it out. That, maybe, just maybe, your love could have been enough.

Instead though, prayers unheard, you were left here - twenty-something, nursing a broken heart in an apartment that was never meant to be just yours, wondering what she was doing now.

It has come to my attention that some people apparently didn't know about the Duel of the Fates script??

Okay so here's some of the official concept art for the original (and better) direction that the sequels were meant to go down.

1. Many cool fights were cut from the script. Kylo was supposed to fight a form of Vader to outline how he's always been in the shadow of expectations that Vader left. The Knights of Ren actually got used for more than just a brief battle. The Knights hunted the Resistance actively, and as seen in the art, it wasn't just Ren or Rey fighting them. In fact, Rey kills them, and it makes her fear that she's slipping to the darkside. Rey runs off as Luke had and goes into hiding so that she doesn't use her teachings to be anything like Kylo. In her fight with Kylo Ren, she's blinded.

2. The story also went a far darker route. Years had passed between the movies. Characters were older, and changes were made.

For example, Rose and Finn get sent away to a First Order labor camp for their crimes against the FO.

While I can't find an image for it, the Resistance also takes fewer prisoners with them. Rigging FO ships to explode if they attempted to escape, disguising bb8 as a FO droid to rob their ships, all that fun stuff that wasn't featured as much in the sequels we got.

My favorite part was that Hux was the chancellor. All of the power he wanted was his, and Kylo was alright relinquishing it. It was proof that they were stronger together, with Hux admiring the force and even having a lightsaber collection of his own. Chancellor Hux wishes he had the force and is frustrated that he doesn't, so he keeps Kylo as a tool to use instead of banishing him from the FO or simply killing him.

The darker aspect comes from what Hux does after the Resistance defeats the First Order. In shame for all that Hux lost, he commits suicide with a lightsaber. Another thing to note is that if you read about it, it's mentioned that the lightsaber was supposed to be purple. The concept art, however, shows a red one, like Kylo's. (I'll have to note this particular fact down for later.)

3. Kylo gets stronger. A Sith holocron guides him to a new master, from whom he learns to drain life from and use force lightning.

Eventually, these teachings are used to kill Kylo's new teacher, bringing him closer to the dark side than he was before, despite the internal conflict still being present.

Kylo was also intended to get a new mask! It may or may not have been intended to be a show of his journey, but imo the concept art seemed interesting enough to note.

4. How Kylo's redemption was handled. While hunting a sith artifact, the artifact senses the light in him and pretty much explodes, leaving him disfigured and severely injured. The locals of the planet, despite knowing who he is, help him recover. Kylo begins to reconsider his actions due to the kindness he was shown and works his way towards redemption.

He still dies, but only when Leia stops him from killing Rey. He sacrifices his life to save her as in the original, making his death the endgame in both scripts.

5. Relationships. Reylo isn't a thing, I think she actually kisses Poe or something at a point. Rose and Finn are canon and at the end of their story have force sensitive children. That could have been in the original if not for Disney's "issue" with them being together. (That's not a story for today)

6. Rey's true name was revealed to be Rey Solana. Not Skywalker.

To conclude, the script was fascinating to me. There was redemption, suicide, new characters, different relationships to explore, and so much potential for a darker yet more interesting story than what we got. Thank you for reading!

Daisy and Luigi's Dynamic

They are the single most versatile dynamic in the entire Super Mario series, every interpretation works wonderfully. This take is something I'll stand by, unless someone wants to submit an even better idea.

Daisy is incredibly bored serving as princess of the desert land. I'm certain she loves the place, but it's hardly an enriching environment most of the time, especially since the security is such a huge focus after... 'the time she met Mario', as she'd been advised to call it. She unwinds as much as she's physically capable of performing, every chance she gets, usually through Mario and Peach's various sports and parties, and it's there, where she meets her perfect target.

Luigi, someone who hardly ever exerts himself, due to a deeply-held belief that he isn't as worthwhile as all his friends. Daisy both knows the feeling, and doesn't know it, both of those because of her naturally higher worth as a princess. She's a sociable person who doesn't get the opportunity to socialise that often, and little does he know it, Luigi is much the same. He's got a lot on his mind, at all times, and just like a royal, he keeps it hidden away for the sake of simplifying the image he presents. When a talkative princess strikes a conversation with him at the back of a room, he feels safe enough to admit he doesn't want to take the spotlight away from the hosts. Daisy convinces him to share the spotlight, instead, and he sees the glint in her eyes. She knows this is a deeply held belief of hers.

Ever since, they've been each others' go-to option for letting out their deepest, darkest thoughts, because they equally know the pain of putting on a smile to convince everybody of their wellbeing. Daisy's is a confident smirk, Luigi's is the exact opposite, but they represent the same thing. Daisy makes a grand appearance everywhere she goes, and in this setting, she doesn't have to make it dignified. Luigi quietly announces his presence, and he now knows that even a soft sentence like that, is listened out for. Daisy and Luigi are listeners at their core, doing their best to understand people because they think they aren't like them, so badly wishing that they could be, and through their relationship, they show each other that they are.

And "relationship" could mean anything. A good friendship, a romantic relationship, perhaps a QPR, or something undefined. You never know with these two, because they interact in a very similar manner with each variation, and they always have the same profound effect on each other. They opened the floodgates for social interactions that the other had secretly been desperate for, this whole time. A lot of people don't even know how they met, but everyone knows that they fall apart when the other isn't around. Daisy is a leader who thrives with all the people she cares about, and Luigi is the necessary half of every dynamic duo.
