YAPPING ABOUT SUPERNATURAL
I just finished the season 5 finale and I am PISSSEDD OFFFFFF this is no hate to the show because I absolutely love it, but the fact that it was supposed to end at season 5 and it lasted 10 MORE YEARS has me a bit peeved
I understand that in hindsight more Supernatural was actually a bad thing instead of "ooo more Sam and Dean!!" but renewing the show for a 6th season when ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS IS ESSENTIALLY KILLED OFF is not how you finish off a character arc. I don't have any solid proof of this but I'm betting the show got renewed before the finale aired so they added the little, "look, look, Sam is back!!" thing at the end WHICH JUST MAKES ME MADDD
This whole entire series up until this point had clear character arcs for Sam and Dean. Sam was sympathetic and wanted to have a normal life, he didn't want to waste his life away to the family business, he wanted his own choice. Dean had to protect Sam his whole life, following John's orders like a soldier, always knowing that he would live to hunt until his demise. This is CLEAR FROM THE START
Towards the end of season 5 we see Sam ready and WILLING to sacrifice himself to save the world, ANF EVERN BEFORE THAT he says that he does not incision himself living a normal life anymore. He knows he will die fighting. Dean towards the end of the season is tired, he wants it all to end, to go to the Grand Canyon with Sam, he wants something normal. He has to let go of Sam and let him grow up, not keep him tethered to Dean because he's grown. Dean has a "normal" life after Sam traps himself and Adam in the pit.
BUT THEN OHHH BUT THEN AT THE END OF THE EPISODE SAM SHOWS UP WATCHING DEAN HAVE DINNER WITH LISA AND BEN !!!! it just completely erases the whole sacrifice Sam did to save the fucking world !!! It makes no sense for the show to continue after season 5 CAUSE EVERYTHING HAS BEEN WRAPPED UP !! Bella is dead because of her demon deal, Ellen and Jo were killed off by the hellhounds and bombing, Lilith is dead, Azael is dead, John is dead, EVERYONE'S DEAD !! Castiel was brought back for the second time that season but it's heavily implied that God brought him back so that's fine or whatever, SO NOTHING ELSE NEEDS TO HAPPEN !!!!!
I get that if the show ended at season 5, we wouldn't have gotten all the of the material we have now, but I'm just saying that the ending of season 5 was FINE and we didn't have to have this entire mess of a series finale WITH THE FUCKING NAIL.

oof as much as I'd love to start drama by asking what IFs you have beef with..... I have to go with the less targeted question of 'what are some IF tropes you think are overdone'. personally if I have to see the same four ROs recycled into another game one more time I'll scream
LOL probably a safer question for me to answer too...
ROs are a big sticking point for me as well. Seeing the same archetypes over and over, feeling like someone came up with ROs first and is now desperately trying to finesse a story that can justify all of them being date-able*, someone having an actually interesting and compelling story to tell but bending themself into pretzels to fit in six romance arcs that may not even serve the plot just because that's an expected convention... Also in general I never lose interest in a new project faster than when I see artbreeder RO portraits. Not even because it's """AI art""" but because it's always the same empty eyed model-perfect 20something in different colors.
(*NOT the same as a story primarily designed to be a dating sim. I generally think that's fine as a genre, and some of these people would have an easier time if they were willing to admit that's what they were writing and not some sweeping grand narrative.)
My other biggest issue with a lot of amateur IF is like... excessive and overly ambitious customization? I think a lot of authors don't know where the line is on what they can just allow the reader to imagine without there being a variable for it, as well as what they should frankly just... be willing to decide for the reader when it best serves the story. As far as MC customization, I think this really stems from a lot of people in the community getting their first introduction to IF through CoG and then drawing the conclusion that if some character customization is good, more customization must be better! But if it's not going to come up in-text and be directly relevant to the plot or how the MC is characterized*... it doesn't need to be canonized.
(*by which I mean, like... making your character a specific religion, or disabled, or something like that. Things that actually impact how they engage with the world.)
Branching off of that, I think maybe my most potentially controversial take is... not every IF needs to have a customizable MC at all. It's entirely possible to write a story with a set, static protagonist, and still allow the player to make decisions that allow them to shape that character and the broader plot in a way that still feels personal and like they're an active participant. VNs tend to go this way, or else they have a faceless MC who still tends to have a more set personality, and I think sometimes I read IF demos and I really get the feeling they wish they could be writing someone specific, and they're getting hamstrung by the idea that they need to sand off enough defining features to let the MC be anyone.

Omg luv ur jay fivs. Please can I have more.
no 💕
thank u next 😘
but seriously...anon I don't got beef with you. in fact, I luv u. im v sorry that i have to use ur ask as an example.
I just get so many messages like this and I've been ignoring all of them but I realized that if I don't say something, they'll keep coming 😅
anywho PSA...
although I appreciate the sentiment and am grateful that people like my writing, i want everyone to understand that if i write for a character, there's a high chance of me writing for them again. as of now i think taejin is the only character on my masterlist i wont write for again. you just need to be patient. i simply cant put out fics as fast as other people do. 😭 i'm already on a tight schedule because i work full time and im a student but on top of that, i write like 2 or 3 different drafts for almost every fic i write. i've tried popping out more content faster with number game prompts, but after the last one, i realized that trying to rush to push my writing out makes me very unhappy lol

The nice thing about being caught up on MSQ is I can go through character tags just fine and not get spoiled!
The bad thing about being caught up on MSQ is I can go through character tags and realize oh god, oh no, people are trying to include Urianger in their cute little fancomics and no one is taking the like 30 minutes it would take to figure out the grammatical rules on his speech patterns, OH NO.
It's a very stupid pet peeve of mine but it's just one of those "I know it when I see it" kinda things about BAD fake early-modern English. I'm far from an expert, I never did get my degree, Life Happened, but I don't think you need to be an expert to make it... not... terrible...
Like, literally 30 minutes of research on early modern English, you don't need to be a scholar of Shakespear or the King James Bible, you just gotta remember basic grammar and read shit out loud and if it's Technically Correct but sounds bad, change it and be wrong anyway.
Just. Ngh.

I really wish choices brought back the 'confirming you sexuality' option like they did in the elementalists.
really would've come in handy so i dont get hella uncomfy when the guy characters flirt hard with my mc. and the mc acting like they are into it..
like on a more recent note with loa book 2, that bar scene with whats - his - name , new partner guy...
i hated that scene sm, was not here for him whispering up close and flirting urghhh.
worse cause the option where you could say no to the diamond scene wasnt really a 'no' just a 'not tonight'. like mc only turned him down cause they were with their friends.
when reality... shouldve been like :
no uncomfy flirtations - he just moves away and it stays completely platonic. is that so much to ask for???
