It's really depressing that the only real Jedi centric and Jedi positive show in existence is written for preschoolers, while many of the more "adult" shows are edgy and about morally ambiguous or straight-up evil characters. As if lessons about being kind and selfless are somehow not important or relevant to adults just as much if not more than they are to children.
It feels like characters who are unambiguously good are seen as only enjoyable by the very young and adult viewers will only actually appreciate characters who are cruel and selfish (and the requisite "tragic backstory" that always goes with it to help excuse their cruel and selfish choices).
It's just really sad and disappointing.

had a really interesting convo yesterday about ethics and whether intent or results matters (eg if you tried to make an ethical purchasing choice but the business was actually exploitative as hell, does that "count") and very much came to the conclusion that sure, if you're concerned with your personal immortal soul, as a christian might be, then intention counts. but if what you're focused on is your impact on the world, then intention means nothing if the actions have negative results, right? (that doesn't mean you're to blame for them! you didn't know! but you also don't get "ethics points" for trying, you know?)
and this also got me thinking about the whole christian idea that sinful thoughts are as bad as sinful actions because. they're just not imo. maybe for the sake of your Immortal Soul they are points against you, if that's your jam. but in terms of putting good into the world, in terms of your impact on other people, the ONLY thing that matters is what you choose to do with those thoughts. there is no way that "was kind to someone who was pissing me off, for the sake of community harmony" or "helped an acquaintance with a task even though I felt resentful about the time spent doing that" is a Bad Thing for the world
and it made me wonder how much purity culture and thought policing is rooted in (mostly evangelical) cultural christianity and this idea that ethical choices are an individual thing because what matters is the impact of them on YOUR soul and not, you know, things we do because of what we owe the world around us / because of love for others / because a world where people are trying to put good into it is a hell of a lot nicer to live in than one where people are only worried about themselves
i grew up evangelical but like. fairly mild evangelical and even though there wasn't a big focus on hell and stuff, i definitely fixated on imperfect thoughts and behaviours that were putting absolutely no harm into the world, rather than focusing on what i could do to put good into it, and that individualistic vs outward-focused approach to morality has been something i've grappled with a lot as an adult. but i never really thought about it as simply as this and really that's what it boils down to. are you making the ethical choice because you're trying to put good in the world, or because it would make you a "good person" to do so? because the answer to that 100% defines whether it's the thought or the result that counts

me, dean, and everyone else watching: ok sure, sammy
#vics spn rewatch#spn 1x10#the apology is made worse by j*red's inability to actually sound sincere#he's doing his fake sympathy voice and it is so. grating#adds a fascinating unintentional layer to sam as we've talked abt before#and it's like not necessarily a Bad thing to perform rather than feel sympathy#but like. this is very much a non-apology and dean knows it and we all know it#sam DID mean those things on some level. maybe not as harshly as he said them bc his anger WAS being heightened by the ghost#but those feelings were real#and sam is allowed to feel them. but they are in many ways. a projection and also unfounded#sam literally could leave at any time and dean would let him go (as we'll see in thee very next episode!!)#just bc he feels those feelings doesn't mean they're inherently true#dean isn't keeping him trapped. dean isn't just blindly following orders. dean Does have a mind of his own#and in fact dean isn't being all that great of a dutiful son bc he actively is not all that interested in finding john!! not the way sam is#and you'd think for dean being the one to initially show up and ask sam's help that he'd be more invested in finding john#and making sure he's actually alive instead of following random coordinates to a case. and taking on every other case they find too#anyways. sam's feelings of anger are real bc he feels them and it's okay to feel things#but he's massively misinterpreting and projecting things onto dean#and then he feels guilty (like post-possession) and tries to swipe it all under the rug and claim he didn't mean any of it#but he Does. and dean knows it. everyone knows it.#his perceptions do not align w/ what's really happening. bc he doesn't have the full context.#bc he doesn't know just how complicated dean's relationship to john really is. bc he was sheltered from a lot of that.#he sees dean desperate for approval and a good little soldier#when in reality dean was playing peacekeeper and mediator and punching bag most of their childhood.#and rn dean doesn't really care that much abt finding john. he just wants to hang out with his brother#not samcr*t btw. we love all this abt him it's spicy it's crunchy it's tasty

in conclusion the most poignant thing about ruina is its running theme of Imperfection. imperfection, focused not on its flaws, but on the miracle of it existing to begin with. imperfection not as a failing, but as a triumph. its cracked, broken, deeply in need of repair-- but it's real and its ours and it exists. despite everything it exists and that enough is a relief beyond words, beyond expression. to present a toppled structure not as a conclusion, but an opportunity.
its the choice-- and the joy-- of looking forward, unflinchingly, and facing it. one step at a time.

thinking about how silver knew or suspected that thomas might be alive almost from the beginning of season 4 and still didn't tell flint like
Flint: Do I need to be concerned that you took almost two hours to tell me about it?
Silver: We are at our least rational... when we're at our most vulnerable. If nothing else, this is a good reminder that without a doubt she is the point at which I'm my most vulnerable. The thought of losing her...
I see.
Silver: If we assume... that we are on the verge of some impossible victory here, a truly significant thing... if we assume that is real and here for the taking... wouldn't you trade it all to have Thomas Hamilton back again?
Flint: I think if he knew how close we were to the victory he gave his life to achieve... he wouldn't want me to.
Silver: I see. Though, that wasn't really what I asked, was it? Assume his father was just as dark as you say, but... was unable to murder his own son, assume he found a way... to secret Thomas away from London...
Flint: He didn't.
Silver: Would you trade this war to make it so? It is some kind of hell to be forced to choose one irreplaceable thing over another.
LIKE PERHAPS THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED HE IS NOT TELLING YOU
Flint: I know what it's like... to have lost her. And then seeing a way to have her back. I understand what that must've felt like. You asked me once what I would do, what I would sacrifice if it meant having Thomas back again. I honestly don't know... what I would've done. I honestly couldn't say I wouldn't have done what you did. I told you I'd see you through this. Put things back together again so that we can move forward. I meant it.
And then again he still doesn't tell him because he can't, not until he's certain he won't have to use it-not until he's certain he'll have to End Flint because he doesn't want to but he knows (has known this whole time) that he will be the end of him so he hid this Massive Thing from him even after he knew what it was like to lose Madi he Still hid it (this is of course assuming that thomas is still alive and that wasn't just a lie to madi or a justification to himself and flint to make sending him (flint) away to live the rest of his life in chains doing labor seem like it wasn't so bad really (and also ignoring the fact that miranda who was arguably more a catalyst for flint's war than thomas was is still dead and not even silver can bring her back from the dead))
it's just really funny idk what to tell you

tomgreg is about the fantasy of being able to find someone who genuinely likes that you're mean and in fact thrives very well being needed in the particular kind of fucked up way that you need someone which makes it so you don't actually have to work that much to strip away your superiority complex in order to be loved for who you are

people fawning over the environmentalist themes in tolkien’s work has always made me deeply uneasy but I could never articulate why, and reading orientalism is clarifying a lot of that for me lol

i can’t stop thinking about that jacaranda tree in tallulah’s flower fields there’s so many implications there. the solid information we have is that phil logged in yesterday to “organize backpacks”, the tree and dugout appeared seemingly overnight, the waypoint is called ‘welcome back, nerd <3’. tubbo says that it’s likely someone who doesn’t know the mechanics of planting that kind of tree due to the waypoint placement in midair & the secondary dig that seemed to have occurred after the player realized the initial dig couldn’t host the tree.
our two most implicated players there are wilbur and tallulah; phil even points out that while the waypoint name is wilbur’s verbiage, the heart emoticon is not very wilbur and is more tallulah. he however pointedly makes it known that it’s built very wilbur-style, with spruce and stone walls. and logistically (to meta-talk it) it was not ccwilbur; he did not log in at an ungodly hour, dig a hole, plant a tree, and not tell anyone. plus (if we’re looking past the dialect disconnect) there’s no real reason for him to make a waystone seemingly welcoming himself back, and he isn’t narratively aware that the eggs are even missing, so it can’t be a wilbur-made-structure in preparation for tallulah’s return. so perhaps we say ‘well maybe ccwilbur asked ccphil to do it for him for some presently unknown reason and that’s why he logged in and organized backpacks!’ except why would phil lead tubbo there knowing it didn’t make much sense and was seemingly unfinished in terms of both build and story? (cc)phil could have so very easily diverted tubbo and him both from visiting but he made it a point to go out there to the field; phil saw the tree first, pointed it out first, investigated first, tubbo just followed his lead— did he know what he was walking into? was it planned; whose idea was that, the name of the waystone, the materials and contents chosen?
there’s no black concrete, which makes me hesitant to allude it to a dimensional-tallulah structure— there’s nothing that indicates she’s communicating like there has been with all the other eggs previous communications, not even a pink sign, though you could make the argument that the tree itself is her sign because it’s her favourite kind of tree, and it’s also her favourite color, but i think it’s kind of a stretch in the grand scheme of things. plus in a meta-sense, especially if we’re taking into account phil’s recent backpack organizing activities, there’s no reason to believe that 02 wouldn’t just dig and plant the tree herself, which still begs the question that even if it IS somehow tallulah’s doing, what was phil doing yesterday?

the watcher screw up fascinates me.
on multiple levels it feels like some startup tech bro sweet talked them into it.
first i’m like the entire watcher tv site is 🤨:
like website hosting can be expensive. video hosting on that website can be even more expensive.
having to cover video hosting and fee processing costs on your own website is going to ravage a huge chunk of revenue.
one perk of youtube is that you’re not paying to host your videos. yeah youtube is taking like half of what you make but theyre also not turning a profit either.
also with youtube, the algorithm helps bring in new fans. its hard to bring in new people with your own hosted website (unless you’re planning to partner with a bigger brand…which maybe thats in the pipeline)
and i get it:
producing videos is expensive. highly quality production ones like the ones they seem like they want make (“tv quality” 🙄) is $$$$.
i use to freelance video edit for a mid-level travel youtube channel. one video cost them 30k to make. they would clear 100k in revenue for it but…video production cost at a certain level is insane.
and it seems like they have a pretty loyal network of fans who have been supporting them thus far.
but to say that they’re taking everything behind the paywall is kind of a slap in the face to those who’ve been following since their buzzfeed days.
which is another thing i’m like 🧐 at. because buzzfeed at the beginning was this big millennial magnet for news and media for people who wanted to kind of stick it to the big names in the space.
early buzzfeed days, a lot of film and media people joined up bc they werent finding jobs in the traditional industry. and eventually it became cool to work at buzzfeed because it didnt have the same barriers that traditional media had.
buzzfeed wasn’t sustainable. it relied on a lot of talented people who they couldn’t pay very well and the subsidies of investors who got greedy and ran the well dry when their non-traditional media brand couldnt compete with the traditional. (though it could have been sustainable if it had better management maybe)
so its baffling that these guys who left buzzfeed bc they wanted to break free from the constraints when buzzfeed started as a way to break from the constraints of traditional media but crashed and burned because they couldnt land on the right profitable business model. and now they want to prove themselves as good as traditional television but on their own streaming service???
and id understand it more if they were churning out a lot more content more frequently but it seems kind of unnecessary to have a streaming subscription service when youve got like one show dropping a week so 🤷🏾‍♀️
i wish them the best but this was a bad fumble.

#i will warn you only once: tsc spoilers#literally just finished it as i am drafting this its 5am where i live#so you may be subjected to some nonsense#that all being said i have thoughts.and feelings#the kevin was lovely and tasted delicious! jean defending him at every turn even when he swears to hell and back he'll kick his ass#the kevjean was surprising i was only half expecting that#the dog metaphors i have to say i need this one cashed in. nora run me my check#im joking of course dont quote me on it#jean taking kevins promise to the end and living on it is seriously so. well.#'be careful with him' 'take kevin's name out of your ignorant mouth' 'you promised me'#also kevin getting called the court's queen had me tender and on my back oml#jean's relationship with the trojans is sweet and he is very interesting and complicated#a character with many moving parts im sure#there were a few things i did not care for#namely jeremy and the trojans felt remarkably flat to me bar lucas (by far the most interesting) and catalina on occasion#i didnt quite enjoy jeremy's pov and felt like he spent perhaps way too much time worrying over jean? if that makes sense#i wish he had some more complexity to him or really anything to catch a hook on#all we know is hes attractive and smiley and gets along terribly with his family#so much of his character is sucked out by jean he didnt feel like much more than a plot device to me#which i wouldnt mind if jeremy wasnt the literal main character alongside jean#i was living for everything jean thought but had to drag myself through jeremy's pov if im honest#uuuuh what else. neil! funny. deranged. i have to love him#andrew couldnt give less of a fuck about jean which is funny as all fuck#two bugs placed in the same habitat ignoring each other#the thing with elodie i thought was complicated. i wish we knew some more about her or that shed been mentioned a little earlier#but im assuming thats a topic to be revisited#uuuuuuuh yeah so thats most of it. i think my first thought and the one that sticked out the most to me is that the book felt remarkably#pedestrian#not necessarily in a bad way#it lacked to me one of the main appeals of aftg which were the numerous interesting side characters

Just thinking about how in boar on the floor when Logan asked the three of them who spoke to Pansil and Greg looks at Tom and says “please” it’s in ear shot of Logan and Tom and Greg just look at each other until Logan shouts “Hey” I think he knew at that moment it was Greg but wanted to punish Tom for covering for him, a worse crime in Logan’s eyes because Tom was showing more loyalty to Greg then he was to Logan. This with the implication that Tom spoke to Logan about Greg getting a promotion alongside him in exchange for information on the sibling’s plans, means that surely Logan would’ve clocked on to Tom’s fondness of Greg which could lead to some interesting scenes in season 4...

Ur tags about how Miles and Pavitr are the ones who say "I can do both" because it IS quintessential spiderman thinking AND because they're too young to have seen that devastatingly not work yet. BUT the thing is they are RIGHT but only if it's "we"! Spiderman's mythos is inherently a lonely one reinforced by Miles and Gwen's isolation and by every. single. intro. reminding us that every spider person is the "one and only spider person"! And yet!! These films are just about relationships (1/2)
Tumblr media
YES YEAH YOU GET IT !!!! and (quite recently rewatched it and mentioning it here cause i can't believe i forgot to mention it in the post you're talking about) it really gets me that gwen also says 'i was doing both' in regards to protecting miles and protecting the canon event, and i love that the phrase was reflected like that, even tho (at this point of the movie) miles and gwen pretty much oppose each other in views/priority !!
it also absolutely kills me the way that gwen begins (like you say) atsv quitting the band and isolates herself, and then throughout the whole thing she finds something/someone that she wants to take that leap for, all over again :') she (and the entire spider-team!!) is willing to bet everything on miles and is ready to fight for him, and i really just love the idea that miles just is a force that inspires good !!!! IT REALLY IS ALL ABOUT LOVE!!!

i sometimes wish that jesson rlly went for it in Phoenix Drop High and made the shadow knights these cringy emo kids who were total jackasses. bc as it stands they barely even scratched the surface of grunge, and i think that making them a group of wannabe emo kids would’ve been rlly fun….. like having them listen to MCR and pierce the veil and make fun of Zane bc he only knows the most popular MCR songs. maybe even put them be in a band but all of their songs just straight up suck and have those “my soul is caged and bleeding :(“ kind of emo lyrics. have Sasha wear the those fingerless fishnet gloves with her uniform. make them force Aphmau to steal a pin from Hot Topic as one of her initiation things. idk maybe it’s just me

would be very funny to me to introduce a bunch of americans who are used to the constitution being treated as a gift from god that's very hard to change and is holy Because it's almost never changed and has been in operation in nearly the same form since 1789 to the way the swiss constitution (last total revision in 1999, there have been several hundred direct democratic votes on possible changes to it since 1848, all you need to suggest a change is hundred thousand people with voting power who'll sign the suggestion) works
