Okay since I'm actually awake now, (proper) HAIR UPDATE! ❤️🖤❤️
I wanted to add this onto my post from last night but tumblr hates reblog photosets. Anyways I was very aware that posting my V in the darkest corner of an apartment with black hair wasn't really ... showing anything - but it was very much her vibe and that's been the point of this entire project, buckling down and learning Blender from nothing, reverse-engineering mods and systems I was only NEW to about a month or so ago so I could figure out how to bring 'back' her hair, but like ... even more how I wished it was.
And it's finally done (well ... structurally).

I'm not releasing this (yet) as I'd now put myself in 'polish' phase, where I'll be tweaking some physics and other stuff like the vertex painting which influences the shine - brighter hair colours look a bit too blown out at the moment, and I'm not sure if this is because it's too shiny or because of my custom normals (may have to tone them down a bit, idk). You can see what I mean below -

Shadows are also behaving oddly at certain angles, and I wasn't sure if it was a harsh lighting situation but upon changing the lighting up ... no. Something weird is going on. So that'll need troubleshooting (for lighter colours at least). Also some textures just are acting weird on certain parts when I don't think they should look that way so yeah ... more ... troubleshooting ahead. :V
I'm also going to look into if there's something I can do for the 'efficiency' of this mesh because I noticed some pretty severe frame slowdowns taking close up shots - though only sometimes?? Not sure what that was about at all. I'm assuming it's my gpu being pushed harder as I get closer to the hair, but upon changing the hair in the character creator to another and then back it just went away again? So no idea what the hell was going on there. It felt a bit almost like a memory leak, but I didn't do a check to see what my system was doing so I'll have another look if it happens again.
Possible (hypothetical) causes:
Could be texture size, these hair cards have 2k textures apart from the alpha (4k) which is double vanilla textures so that is also a possibility as a fix (though I'd be loathe to do it).
Double rigs. I noticed last night when in my rigging phase with UUH4V that reducing it from three meshes and rigs to TWO meshes and two rigs significantly improved framerate lag (I mean it was minor but noticeable enough) in the character creation screen, so it could hypothetically be something to do with calculations of running two rigs at the same time. If that is the case, I could probably just rig this to the Alt hair rig. Currently I'm using Alt's for the back and left side of the hair, whereas the fringe at the front and the curl over the shoulder is rigged to Old Rogue. I'll probably still keep using UUH4V just … one rig only.
Last in the list? Hair cards. There are a lot. Maybe too many. They're also of a higher poly than last time. That said I've looked at other mods with heavier polycounts than mine (what gave me the courage to push further in the first place after my very low poly attempt 1.0) that caused more obvious frame slowdown in just the character creator alone. I feel there is still a minor slowdown currently but it's on the edge of noticeable (like, 30fps vs 60fps). As it goes though, this is still pretty insanely efficient (thank YOU Hair Tools for Blender).
BONUS: Mods. Other mods. The thing I use to hook in a DLL for pose control. Could always be that?
So uh, guess that's what I'll be working on. I don't know how much time I should be spending on getting this 'frame efficient' considering anyone using this would be primarily be for screenshots, and given the specs I'm currently running (AMD Ryzen 5 CPU and an RTX 2060) are being re-classed as the 'bare minimum' with Phantom Liberty coming out, and I am planning on upgrades to my PC anyway.
We'll see? (Though in my heart of hearts, I have have had potato PCs for years and I want to support the lowest specs I possibly can). I dunno let me know what you think about that one as a possible mod user (and someone who actually reads these, wow).
Anyways all that matters is jesus christ I finally did this. I taught myself hair. From scratch.
Promised tutorial ... soon. After I maybe do nothing for a few days lol.

2020 Favorite Video Games

I don’t know if I am an outlier or if this is the same for everyone else but I really did not play a lot of games this year. 2020 was a very harsh year for all of us, especially for me for some personal reasons. So to get to the chase, I am just gonna say it left me not doing much in what little free time I did have, and I didn’t play much either. Usually I try to keep my lists for ‘favorite of the year’ to only titles released that year but since I played so little this year, screw it. I am gonna include any game I played this year regardless of release date.
Collection of SaGa

By far a flawed rerelease. It’s bare bones: there are no advance features you would usually expect out of these kinds of emulated rereleases like save states, fast forward, or rewind, and there was no real effort made to touch up almost 30 year old localizations that had to meet Nintendo of America’s then harsh standards. This really is just 3 roms slapped into a nice looking interface with an option to increase the game speed (which by the way you better use, the characters walk very slow in these old games). 
I am bit harsh here, but only because I thought the Romancing SaGa remasters and the upcoming SaGa Frontier remaster all looked like they got a great budget and a lot of love while this is just another Collection of Mana situation (moreso specifically talking about Seiken Densetsu 1/Final Fantasy Adventure/Adventures of Mana part of that collection). I would have loved to see Square Enix do a bit more for these older games. Or at least include the remakes. Seiken Densetsu 1 had two great remakes, both unused in Collection of Mana, and all three of these original SaGa titles have remakes that have never seen the light of day outside of Japan. How great would it have been to get the Wonderswan remake of SaGa 1, as well as the Nintendo DS remakes of Saga 2 and SaGa 3? 
But my gripes aside, these games are still fun as they ever were. Replaying SaGa 1 specifically during the holiday season really helped calm me down and made me feel at ease. It’s easy to forget but even in their Gameboy roots there are a lot of funky and weird experimental choices being made in these games. They aren’t your run-of-the-mil dragon quest (or considering the gameboy, maybe pokemon would be more apt) clones. 
Raging Loop

Perhaps my favorite game of the year, Raging Loop is one of the best visual novels I have ever played hands down. The level of creativity and splitting story paths that went into it is simply mind blowing. The basic premise is both a wonderful throwback to the old days of Chunsoft sound novels while still modern and somewhat reminiscent of both Higurashi and Danganronpa. Essentially you play as Haruaki, a poor slub that got lost in the mountains with no clue where to go until you stumble upon an old rural village with a strange history and even stranger superstitions. Before you know it there has been a murder and the Feast is now afoot.
The less said about Raging Loop the better, although I do want to say a lot about it one day if I ever can write a proper review of it. This is a gripping game that will take hold of you once you get into it though and never let go. I actually 100%-ed this and I very rarely do that. I got every ending, every bonus hidden ending, played the entire game twice to hear all the hidden details it purposely hides on your first play through, played all the bonus epilogue chapters, unlocked all the hidden voice actor interviews, collected all the art work, etc, etc. I was just obsessed with this game, it’s that damn good! And the main character is maybe the best troll in all of video games, god bless Haruaki. 
Root Double

From Takumi Nakazawa, long time contributor to Kotaro Uchikoshi’s work comes a game any fan of Zero Escape or Uchikoshi in general will probably enjoy. Root Double, like its name suggests is a visual novel with two different routes, hence Root Double. The first route stars Watase Kasasagi, the leader of an elite rescue team in the midst of their greatest crisis yet that could lead to nuclear devastation as they try to evacuate a nuclear research facility that has gone awry. 
The other route stars Natsuhiko Tenkawa, an everyday high schooler whose peaceful life is thrown into turmoil when he stumbles upon a terrorist plot to destroy the nuclear facility in the city and his attempts to stop them. Together the two separate plots weave into one and creates a really crazy ride. Part Chernobyl, part science fiction, any fan of the genre will easily enjoy it. And hey it’s kind of relevant to include on this list too since it just got a Switch port this year (I played it on steam though).  
Snack World

I was shocked upon starting Snack World as it is instantly incredibly charming, witty, and downright hilarious at times yet I heard almost zero people talk about it. EVER. This game is Dragon Quest levels of quirky though, and the localization is incredible. The game has such an oddball sense of humor that works really well with its presentation right down to the anime opening video that sings about the most bizarre things. Instead of the usual pump up song about the cool adventure ahead we get stuff like wanting to go out to a restaurant and eat pork chops. 
The self aware/fourth wall breaking humor is just enough to be really funny, but doesn't overstay its welcome and always makes it work right in the context of the dialogue. And finally, just everything; with the menus, the name of side quests and missions, and the character dialogue -- are all just so witty and full of quirky humor. This is one hell of a charming and funny game and addictive to boot.
Trials of Mana

Trials of Mana has gone from one of those legendary unlocalized games, to one of the first major breakthroughs in fan translation, to finally getting an official English release complete with a fully 3D remake. In a lot of ways from a western perspective this game has had an incredible journey. As for this remake itself, I really found myself having tons of fun with it. I loved the graphics, and the voice acting while a bit on the cheaper side almost kind of adds to the charm since both the graphics and acting really give it an old PS2 vibe. I know that is probably just more me being weird but yeah, I had to say it. 
I really hope Square Enix sticks to this style of remake more often, instead of just doing Final Fantasy VII Remakes that break the bank and involve extensive tweaking to both plot and game play. I’ll take smaller budget projects that play more like the original game any day personally. I wouldn’t mind if they also deliver a brand new Mana game all together in this engine either. 
Utawarerumono Trilogy

This year saw the release of the first entry in the series, Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen--and thus finally after three years since the sequels Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth came out in 2017 the trilogy is now complete in English. I ended up binging through Prelude to the Fallen very fast shortly after it came out and immediately jumped on to the sequels. Perhaps the best part of 2020 was that I finally played all three of these fantastic games, and did so back-to-back-to-back. Playing the first Utawarerumono was an experience I will never forget, it was like visiting old friends again that I haven’t seen in ages, by and large thanks to the fact that I saw the anime adaption of the game when I was much younger, nearly a decade ago. Back then I would have never of dreamed that I would get to play the actual game and get the real experience. 
And it only got better from here, as all three games are such wonderful experiences from start to finish. The stories are all so deep, and by the time you get to the third entry, Mask of Truth, it’s crazy to see how they all connected over so many years and weaved together into a plot much bigger than they ever were. What carries it beyond all that though has to be the fun and addicting strategy role playing game aspect, which while a bit on the easy side, is still so much fun and helps make the game feel better paced since you get to play the conquests your characters go on and not just read about all the battles they fight. Beyond that the games are packed full of awesome characters, and I know I’ll never forget the amazing leads in all of them. Hakuowlo, Haku, and Oshtor will all go down as some of the greats to me. 
Ys: Memories of Celceta

Ys: Memories of Celceta is a full 3D remake of Ys IV, a rather infamous game in Falcom’s Ys series. Not to get bogged down too much into the history of Falcom but by this point they were facing a lot of hardship and had to outsource this entry to other developers, and thus passed it on to two particular developers they had a business relationship with, creating two unique versions of Ys IV. Tonkin House who had worked on Super Famicom port of Ys III with Falcom ended up creating their own YS IV entry, Mask of the Sun for the very same system, where Hudson soft who had produced the much beloved Ys Books I & II remakes for the Turbografix (PC Engine) CD add-on created their own Ys IV entry Dawn of Ys for that console. Both games followed guidelines and ideas outlined from Falcom themselves but both radically diverged from each other and turned into completely different games. 
Falcom finally putting an end to this debate on which version of Ys IV you should play have gone and created their own definitive Ys IV in 2012 for the Playstation Vita. I played the 2020 remastered version of this remake on my PS4. I even bought this on the Vita when it first came out but I am horrible and only horde games, never play them. So it was a lot of fun to finally play this. 
Memories of Celceta is probably one of the best starting points for anyone looking to get into Ys, especially if you only want to stay with the 3D titles as out of all the 3D entries this explains the most about the world and series protagonist Adol Christian. Beyond that it’s just another fantastic entry in a wonderful series that has a few good twists hidden behind it, especially for long time fans of the series. 
Random Video Game Console Stuff

Xbox Has Blue Dragon: I actually got an Xbox One this year for free from my brother. Because of that I started to play Blue Dragon again and there’s a lot I would love to say about this game. I don’t know if I am fully committed to replaying it all the way through however but I find myself putting in a couple hours every few days and enjoying myself again. Does anyone else remember Blue Dragon? I feel like it really missed its audience and had it come out nowadays and probably for the Switch it would have really resonated with the Dragon Quest fandom a lot more instead of being thrown out to die on Xbox and constantly compared to Final Fantasy VII and the like which it had nothing at all similar with. 
The Turbografx 16 Mini: This was probably one of the best mini consoles that have come out and I feel like thanks to the whole 2020 pandemic thing it was largely forgotten about. That’s a shame, it has a wonderful variety of great games, especially if you count the Japanese ones (god I wish I could play the Japanese version of Snatcher included), and a wonderful interface with fantastic music. One of these days I would really like to be able to play around with the console more seriously than I have already. 
Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon Never Existed: So Nintendo localized the first ever Fire Emblem game on Nintendo Switch which is awesome to see them touching Famicom games again--I haven’t seen Nintendo of America rerelease old Famicom titles since Mysterious Murasame Castle on the 3DS, but their trailer hilariously made it seem like this is the first time ever they released Fire Emblem when in fact they had already localized the remake Shadow Dragon on the Nintendo DS nearly 10 or 11 years ago. I and many other fans I talked to all found this really hilarious, probably solely because of how much they kept repeating the fact that this is the first time you will ever be able to experience Marth’s story.

All that aside though I have to say the collector edition for this newly localized Famicom game is probably the most gorgeous retro reproduction I have seen in a long time, and I really spent many many hours just staring at the all clear glass mock cartridge. I have found myself really obsessing over retro reproductions during 2020, and obtained quite a few this year. I really hope this trend continues to go on in 2021 as recreating classic console packaging and cartridges is a lot of fun.

Thoughts On: Heretic

Earlier this year, just before the beginning of quarantine, I played a little game called AMID EVIL, something I would not have done were it not for the enchanting video skills of YouTuber Civvie 11. In his video, Civvie demonstrated the awesomeness of the retro shooter, both in graphics and gameplay, and since I was jonesing for something a little more dark fantasy than I was used to, I decided to give it a try. The game is a thrilling rush, and worthy of its own post here, but that game was a segue into me finally picking up and playing a game series that I had been intrigued by for nearly twenty some odd years: the Heretic and Hexen games.
AMID EVIL owes a lot to these games; in fact, it's not much of a leap to say that it owes everything to these games. It's even less of a leap to say that most first person shooters, whether dark fantasy or no, owe a lot to these games. Raven Software introduced a monster of a franchise when they dropped Heretic in December of 1994, working in collaboration with id Software as Raven was creating their games using the DOOM engine (or, as I think we're calling it now, “id tech 1”). John Romero helped in-house, giving advice on how to work with the engine, which was instrumental for Raven to push id tech 1 to its limits. They made changes to the engine which eventually became staples in other FPS games: an inventory system, translucent objects, pushable objects, the ability to look up and down, and the ability to fly. While the game itself was objectively a reskinned version of DOOM, it was stylish and engaging and reworked the most popular game engine at the time. In short, it won accolades in no small amount, and sealed itself in history as a high watermark for boomer shooters, hell, for PC gaming in general. So when we're looking backwards into the foggy past of our ancestors, is Heretic a game that we, in the Year of Our Lord Gaben 2020, should consider playing, either for the first time or as a throwback? Roll up your sleeves, party people, we've got a deep one to dive into today. Because we can't simply look at Heretic alone; oh, no. We're going to have to look at the whole franchise.
Heretic is not a complicated game per se, but it has a lot of tricks up its sleeve. We have the standard issue Run-Gun-Have-Some-Fun gameplay that Wolfenstein and DOOM brought to the table. There's three keys of different colors – yellow, green, and blue – there's a variety of weapons that almost line up point-for-point with DOOM's stack of damage inducers, and there's a horde of enemies that are around every corner waiting for you to come out magic blazing. But where DOOM has a mostly straightforward path from point A to point B, Heretic is a trickster which can and will give cause to tear one's hair out. Secret doors, invisible walls, fake walls, and hidden switches are everywhere, which means that nine times out of ten you'll either be consulting your map to figure out where the fake walls are, or you'll be pressing the space bar on every surface to see if it will open or activate something useful. Raven did a bit of a whammy on the game, setting up the simplistic stuff to lure you in, as though promising a hot night out with the kind of experience you think that you're used to, but then they strap you in for the kinky stuff that you always imagined you'd be into, but now that we're here you're not so sure. Make no mistake, I did consult a walkthrough at least once, maybe twice if I'm remembering right, during my playthrough. And the game is punishing the deeper you get: enemies lie in wait immediately behind doors, around corners, hidden out of sight or just above you since some of them can fly, and as your limited ammunition dwindles down into the red, you'll be forced into running risk-and-reward of melee weapons and inventory items to keep moving. Fortunately, each weapon has its own ammo stock, and some enemies are more susceptible to different weapon types. Adding to the bonus in the player's favor are inventory items that boost weapon damage, specifically the Tome of Power which magnifies the current weapon's attack power into a secondary fire that more often than not is absolutely brutal. But, unlike future entries in this series, the motto of the day is: Keep Moving, Keep Shooting, Don't Stop Moving, Don't Stop Shooting. It's Fun, Fast, and Furious in an entertaining way that only occasionally leaves you pondering why you even booted up the game this morning.
However you may feel about the gameplay itself, it can't be denied that the visual aesthetics and gamefeel are dripping with atmosphere. Everything from top to bottom feels like the best of cheesy 80's style fantasy art, from the front cover to final screen. Gloomy castles, underwater domes, craggy hellscapes. Weapons impress with over-the-top magical properties. The default staff acts like the DOOM pistol, lobbing nearly harmless yellow energy, while the Etheral Crossbow shoots multiple energy arrows at once, like a magic shotgun, easily the most versatile weapon in the game. Besides that one, my other favorite weapons are the Hellstaff (which blasts rapid-fire red energy, and causes acid rain to fall when Tomed up) and the Phoenix Rod (basically a magic rocket launcher that belches fire when overpowered). Depending on what you're facing, proper usage of these weapons (all finely drawn sprites, natch) can either chew through a mob with ease or leave you scrambling to get back. Stun lock Disciples with the Dragon Claw while obliterating Golems with the Crossbow; save the Phoenix Rod for big bads. And enemy creatures run the gamut from the simplistically annoying Gargoyles (red bat-winged creatures who also shoot fireballs) to the sturdy Golems (which come in a secondary variety which throw flaming skulls at you) to the Disciples of D'Sparil (faceless hooded monks who fly, chant, and shoot fireballs at you, on theme). Usually these damage sponges come at you in packs, rarely doing so in solo numbers because otherwise the game wouldn't be a DOOM clone. What really gets challenging is when boss creatures start popping up like regular enemies – in packs. Take the Iron Lich for example, a massive floating skull wearing a spiked helmet that throws walls of fire and tornadoes that do continual damage, they appear as a boss at the end of the final level of the first episode, then appear later on in groups. They take incredible amounts of damage and return fire constantly, which leads to a tense game of bobbing and weaving and staying as far away from them as possible. But the absolute worst is the Maulotaur. Basically, a minotaur that stands head and shoulders taller than the Iron Lich, carries a huge mace, and shoots waves of fire at you which can one-shot you if you're not paying attention. Staying away from them is key, but they can charge forward fast in order to close distance and take a few swings at you with the mace. These assholes also start as a final bosses, then appear as regular enemies surrounded by waves of other mobs. Maulotaurs are the dealbreakers of the game; they require ridiculous amounts of ammo to kill, and will force you through most of your inventory items if you're not already powered up. Thankfully, your inventory can hold quite a few helpful items, such as quartz flasks for health, the aforementioned Tomes of Power to boost weapon damage, invisibility spheres and wings of flight, and even motherfucking time bombs. But amongst all these, the most ridiculous and yet satisfying item is the Morph Ovum. Shaped like an egg, when used it gets thrown outward and whatever it hits is transformed into an easily killable chicken. Got a wave of monsters crowding too close and you need to thin the herd fast? Turn them into chickens, then turn them into fried chickens.
What gets me is that this game doesn't feel nearly as highly regarded as its indirect sequel, Hexen, and that's probably because for the most part this is a full-on DOOM clone. There were a lot of them back in the day, too many to count, and I think that if wasn't for the legacy of Raven and Hexen, this might have fallen through the cracks of history. Is it uninspired? No, not in the slightest. The quality of the spritework and animations are top notch, the production values are stellar, putting it just above the quality of the average obvious Doom clone. The amount of innovation, with the aforementioned inventory system and modifications to the engine, mesh well with the ambitious world/story crafted in the background of a single warrior trudging across worlds to defeat an evil tyrant who has taken over his people's lands. The current version on Steam is actually the second version released; initially, the game launched in 1994 with three episodes, the first one being the shareware version, and then later on in 1996 had a second physical release which added on two new episodes. It was like an expansion pack folded into the main game, and considering that Hexen was released in 1995, it makes sense that the two new episodes of Heretic feel so much more brutal in difficulty by comparison. And thematically it makes sense for them to have a higher base difficulty, since it’s about escaping the dark world you had to break into, and now you're crawling your way back out of it. Kind of a neat trick, having the hero beat the bad guy halfway through the story, then showing his journey to get back home. Hell, even the name of the main character is awesome. A later game in the series will reveal that his name is Corvus, but originally the character was simply referred to as The Heretic, and in a gaming landscape featuring such characters as Doomguy, the Quake Ranger, and the Doomslayer, the Heretic ought to stand right up there with the rest of them.
So is the game worth playing today? Absolutely. Any fan of boomer shooters or retro gaming in general should absolutely play this game. Utilizing DOSBOX (which the Steam release uses) is fine, but doesn't allow for the best playing experience currently. A quick download of GZDOOM to launch the game will give better controls, easier mouse compatibility, and smoother graphics. There's a method to tie GZDOOM into your Steam page so you can even track how long you've been playing it (for those who this is important for). And it's super cheap, meaning there's little to no excuse to not play it. So why then is this game sitting in the background, kind of like the little engine that could? You know, I'm doing my best to get into the meat and potatoes of this game, to be more descriptive of it and really entice you, the reader, into wanting to play this game. The powerups are fun, there are segments where you absolutely get to go apeshit on monsters and laugh hysterically while you do so, there are moments where the “AHA” is so enlighting that the relief is palpable. Some of the bosses are so memorable that to find them around the corner later in the game as minibosses – in multiple! – is downright frightening and adds to the risk/reward, since they're usually guarding something good that you want to pick up. Long story short, if you like DOOM, you'll like Heretic, which feels like selling the experience short. But the real reason I think Heretic is overlooked is because it is overshadowed by the more complex, more engaging, and more brutal Hexen.
If it hasn't become obvious yet, this is going to be a multi-part Thoughts On post. You've read Heretic, which is a fine game that does what it does and is memorable and fun and fine. But next, we're going to dive into the second course of this delicious fantasy meal, Hexen, and talk about how the second game in this series is the one that got everyone to sit up and take notice of what Raven Software was doing.

Throne of Night Theory Builds Part 28: Denizens of the Sub
Best laid plans and all that. Here we are again, and it’s because of new information that I found. This means that my original plan to release the Book 6 additional encounters will have to wait for a bit longer. Although, that said, this could be part of Book 6. I honestly couldn’t say.
Never would have guessed, but today is going to be another rare treat of THREE builds at once. I haven’t done that yet. This will definitely be the biggest one to date. Before it was person and bodyguards, or person and animal companion. Now, it’s basically all of the above. What a treat.
No new art with this one, just information that I discovered while looking for new art. I’m still hopeful that I’ll find more. No luck though, and that’s okay.

Last week, for fun, I did a speculation build for what I would do if I’d been given the submarine map and told to go nuts with it, with no prior knowledge given. I’m not always great on it, but I have taken maps of locations before and just filled it in. It’s something you kind of learned to do when it was your turn to do your own version of the Temple of Elemental Evil dungeon and fill in all of the empty locations. Regardless, I took the concept of Lovecraftian creatures had to exist here to be a proper gateway to alleviate any whiplash when Book 6 introduced pretty much the rest of the “rogue’s gallery”, so to speak.
At the time, I just did my own thing. And I did put in there that it was quite possible that I was barking up the wrong tree. It’s why I didn’t do full and complete builds. Well, now it’s time for the real deal. While I don’t know about what else is in there, I do know now, that these stat blocks I’m releasing today (they’re still my theory build, so don’t take it as gospel, but the monsters are definitely there), as well as the brain collector I did stats for previously.
Let’s get to it. Note that I’m still unsure as to the when that these encounters occur, but it would either be near the end of Book 5, or within the first few pages of Book 6. It’s becoming more obvious that this sub is what the PCs use to infiltrate the submerged aboleth city. Either way, I made sure the CR for them were enough to be challenging, but not impossible for the likely party level. My assumption is level 17-18, and neither will be an Easy encounter.

Both set of builds will have creatures that have the Technologist feat. Considering how advanced this submarine is, and how alien everyone is supposed to be, it’d made sense that something from the Technology Guide would be present. If you want to go even further with the future tech, give the thanadeamons and neolithid key cards, and put lock coders at each of the doors. Maybe even a few cameras at various places so that the neolithid can keep an eye on them. Possibly swap out the bracers of armor on the neolithid for a forcefield.
First off, the guards of the capture sub. Regarding tactics, while I gave them a magic item to ignore difficult terrain, it should be noted that they have constant air walk. This means that, given the ceiling and width of the of the hallway, they can stand above one another, or just stand above the water without it interfering with their movement. This is especially frightening because it means they’ll always have a +1 circumstance bonus to attacks for being above their opponents. Definitely something to remember and exploit whenever possible.

----------------------------- Next up is the neothelid in the sub control room. Not exactly sure where this creature is on the map, other than “top floor”.
For this one, it made sense that an alien life form would be curious about mortals from the Material Plane, and might continually run experiments to learn more about them, see what made them tick, and how easily they could break physically, emotionally, or mentally. All in the name of science. The neothelid has no emotional investment in this sort of thing, after all.
As such, being so fascinated, I went with a design that had the creature build a representation of what it thought life was, based on previous encounters with drow prisoners, with a homonculus of its own design. Through various trials and experiments, the doll would either be placed in a cell right before new prisoners were brought in, acting as one who had been there for an unknown length of time, or the doll was put in afterwards as the new prisoner. The neothelid then sits back and watch events unfold through the eyes of its creation, taking notes of what did and didn’t work, and what discoveries were made.
The homonculus looks very similar to a drow, with a few features that might make it seem similar to someone from Taaryssia. It even possesses a name similar to that of a drow’s. It’s programmed to help its master’s with various experiements, whatever that might entail. It is a competent spy that’s designed to ally with new comers, gain their trust, aid them however they need, and gather intelligence for its master. Because it is an emotionless construct, anyone trying to make a Sense Motive check to discovery falsehoods take a –8 penalty. The homonculus doesn’t take a penalty as its master helps guides the conversation, making it less likely that suspicion be raised.
Because of the number of previous drow having been captured before, the homonculus has a decent amount of knowledge regarding Taaryssia. Enough that no one should suspect or believe the homonculus drow to not be a citizen.

10 Franchises SEGA Would Be Crazy Not To Bring To VR – Part 1
Welcome to another edition of VR vs. The weekly VRFocus column where the ‘other one’ from the site talks about most anything and everything to do with virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) or some crazed combination of the three. Today we’re continuing a thread begun last week in the final part of my three-week feature into what may lie ahead in 2017.  There I mooted the idea that of all the studios currently involved within VR, certainly from a gaming perspective there is one that is conspicuous by its absence. SEGA. Yes, yes, I know there are Hatsune Miku games but as I pointed out at the time Hatsune Miku and the vocaloid bunch ultimately aren’t SEGA property and aren’t a traditional franchise. They aren’t one recognised within their All-Stars series for instance – and whilst that isn’t a qualifying marker for this list considering how big the Project Diva series is and how iconic a figure Miku is in Japanese culture certainly, you’d’ve thought SEGA would make more of a deal out of things than they have were she theirs. So on that basis, scrub those out PSVR games off your mental tally.
Updated total? Zero.
This is unusual for SEGA. Historically SEGA (at least in the third-party era) have rushed in to support whatever new technology comes along. Do you by any chance remember the EyeToy, Sony’s camera accessory for the PlayStation 2? Yes? No? There weren’t exactly a whole heap of games for it. But SEGA were there with the original SEGA Superstars to fly the flag. They supported the Kinect they fell into bed with Wii U pretty quickly, etc, etc. For SEGA to not have had one of its more noted franchises in the West ready to rock and roll when VR came to retail, certainly the PSVR, was pretty unusual. (Again, discounting the leek-swinging singer lady.)
But that’s not to say there aren’t plenty of opportunities for SEGA to embrace VR and thrown a bone to its more beloved franchises. It’s one of the sad truths about SEGA that their most iconic of series, with the exception of the fast spiky one, have never exactly been humongous successes financially. Still, why not use some of them and maybe give them a new lease of life outside of a new racing game? (No, really SEGA. It’s time for Transformed 2. Throw some money at SUMO Digital, will ya?) It’s also not like we don’t know SEGA aren’t messing around with VR either. Both SEGA Europe (SOE) and SEGA America (SOA) revealed their ownership of VR kits (HTC Vive and PlayStation VR for SOE and Hololens for SOA) thanks to community videos. Way to keep that secret chaps. A+ work.
So let’s get things underway. As before I must point out that I used to work for SEGA for several years and worked on a number of the franchises listed that I’ll be bringing up. It was some time ago now, but I’m reliably informed that if I don’t do that the world will apparently end. We begin first with an honourable mention.
Honourable Mention: Alien Isolation
It’s just not going to happen folks. Many have said the masterfully creepy atmosphere of “SEGA’s Good Alien Game” – tho everyone forgets they also did an Alien game on the DS in that discussion – was a perfect match for a full and proper adaption into a VR experience. The scare factor would be immense, obviously. As it’s bad enough being stalked by a Xenomorph without actually looking down at your chest as its tail pushes through it to kill you.  As much as we’d all like it to, the economic factors involved just mean Alien Isolation is a non-starter for Creative Assembly to even get involved in really. Boo-urns.
However, speaking of Creative Assembly…
  Total War
It’s one of gaming’s little quirks that one of console gaming’s most well known names is the publisher that is in actuality one of PC Gaming’s powerhouses. Between Sports Interactive’s Football Manager series and Creative Assembly’s Total War franchise SEGA have an commanding grip of the PC chart, one would go far to say dominance at some points in the year.  If you have lived in a hole for the past couple of decades, Total War is a series of real-time strategy games that takes keen players take on the role of General in various eras of time. Heck, you can even throw history right out the window now and enjoy some Warhammer in your Total War.
Total War has always been about getting stuck in to battles. The planning, the preparation, the implementation and the execution.  The buck stops with you, and as the series has developed the control system has allowed you to get ever deeper into the action.  You can even follow individual soldiers. It’s such a well developed system that there’s even been a BBC game show (essentially) based on playing the series. One that’s recently had something of a comeback.

Now, considering what I’ve just written you might be wondering what I’ve been talking about since I’ve just been praising the system. But you can always improve and everyone and anyone who has played Total War has always had periods where the game just won’t place units right or you can’t get the camera in jussssst the right position. Now imagine you are in the map as opposed to looking at a 2D surface. Imagine you were, with your motion controllers able to to manipulate your units and your surroundings just so. How much easier and dynamic and engaging an experience that would bee if you brought a touch of Minority Report to proceedings.
Heck, can you imagine a Hololens version of Total War? With you waging battles from your sofa over your coffee table, and manoeuvring your archers onto the high ground of the TV unit? That’d be amazing.

When I first saw the HTC Vive controllers my first thought, partly because of how they were being held and moved at the time, was that they kind of looked like maracas. And there’s only one game that invites you, without a hint of suggestiveness, to get your maracas out. Samba de Amigo first burst onto the scene on SEGA’s much loved Dreamcast and was actually developed by Sonic Team if you didn’t realise it. It also came out as an arcade experience before next surfacing on the Nintendo Wii. The game plays with you in amongst a vibrantly coloured carnival, armed with your maracas you control Amigo, one of SEGA’s two monkey mascots (the other being Super Monkey Ball‘s AiAi, strangely the two have never been seen as rivals in the Superstars/All-Stars titles. Which has always puzzled me.) You move and dance along to a selection of upbeat tracks, shaking your controllers in time to the beat and occasionally having to strike a pose. It’s a simple enough title, and well and truly puts the party into party game.
VR needs more games like that I think. More games that are just full on fun and colours. It’s why Balloon Chair Death Match got people excited, it was a simple premise and it looked fun. Job Simulator is the same. Bright colours and poitively oozes fun. Yes, we can all enjoy a nice serious game with high stakes, but in dammit we all just want to be silly sometimes. Samba allows you to do exactly that. Now, what I’m essentially asking you is to imagine this in VR. Please watch the video below as in this instance it is important to what I’m writing about.

As an added bonus it gets to be a game franchise fully realised on VR, something people are clamoring for.

Condemned 
There’s a very good chance you don’t remember Condemned: Criminal Origins. There’s an even better chance you’ve never played it or Condemned 2: Bloodshot. Which is a pity really. Condemned is a first-person experience which puts you in the shoes of Ethan Thomas, a police officer investigating a murder which slowly takes him down a path to discovering secret societies, mysterious entities, encountering nightmarish visions and the city falling into the grip of madness. Both games are a twisted mix of dark menacing settings, genuine scares that mess with play on psychology and improvised combat usually involving whatever Ethan can get his hands on. It’s frantic, up in-your-face stuff and perfect for VR with the combat emphasis on melee.

It’s not just that though. The first Condemned game especially has you dealing, within your role as a police investigator, a number of different crime scenes. These are technical, and involve you hunting for clues, such as finger prints and making deductions. What Condemned is, is what I suggested it could be back at E3 2016. It could be the Batman VR game you’ve always wanted but combined with all the best twisted bits of Resident Evil VII.
We’ll just ignore the bit about shouting people to death from number 2. (Check out my good friend John’s Let’s Play of Condemned 2 to see what I mean.)

I decided to play Dicey Dungeons at E3 this year on a whim. At that time, I had no idea it was by the madman behind VVVVVV, Terry Cavanagh, or that it had music by chipzel or art by Marlow Dobbe. All I knew was I liked the rogue genre and it had giant dice fighting through dungeons. That was enough to pique my interest. But now that I’ve been playing the game pretty much non-stop since I got the review code, how do I actually feel about Dicey Dungeons? Let’s roll the dice and find out.

The setting of the game is a sort of twisted, infernal game show. It’s run by none other than Lady Luck, and as gamblers worldwide can attest, she’s a real bitch. She transforms all the contestants into giant dice and then hurls them through several floors full of monsters and lackeys to win their heart’s desire. Even when they win, the odds are against them, at least until you are able to change the mind of her head minion, the Jester. Then things start to change, and you begin to see a way out. But it’s a long road to that point, and it’s full of delightful insanity.

At the beginning, you can only select the Warrior. He’s the most basic and easy to understand character, but you’ll eventually unlock 5 others (well, technically 6). There’s also the Thief, Robot, Inventor, Witch and Jester. The 7th kinda sorta character is the Bear, but you can only play as him by stealing a magical potion as the Thief. While the Warrior is best for starting out, each other character gets progressively more complex than the one before it, and the difficulty of playing them is denoted with stars. The hardest to play is the Witch, and she’s no joke. This review would have been done sooner but I had this stupid itch to beat the game as her once, and several hours later, I still haven’t succeeded.

Which brings us to the difficulty of Dicey Dungeons. This is not for the faint of heart. Not only are the odds stacked against you, they’re so stacked you can easily die in the first floor of a dungeon. Considering there’s only 6 floors total, that’s a challenge. But it’s not an unreasonable one, so long as you comprehend each character’s unique mechanics. Though they’re all very different, they share some similarities. Each one attacks by using dice to activate attacks and cast spells. Another commonality is the Limit Break. After taking enough damage, this meter will be charged, and you’re given the opportunity to use a powerful special ability. For the Warrior, you get to deal double damage with a Fury attack, whereas the Thief uses Unlucky Roll to create 4 extra dice with a value of one each. Each character also levels up as you defeat enemies, granting you more dice to use each turn of combat, as well as increasing your base health. Other than that though, things are gonna vary dramatically.

Each character is essentially its own unique way to play Dicey Dungeons, and even has unique equipment they’re more likely to find in chests strewn throughout the labyrinth. Take the Thief for example. He lacks the impressive damage output of the Warrior, but trades it for reusable multi-attack skills such as the Dagger. He essentially needles opponents to death, whittling them down 1 HP at a time. He’s also very adept at using Poison skills. But where he gets really interesting is his ability to randomly steal an attack from enemies at the start of every turn. If you’re fighting a snowball hurling snowman, the Thief will get to toss snowballs back at him. Or take the Inventor instead, who deconstructs a piece of her equipment each turn to build a new free to use Gadget. Then there’s the Witch, who has a book of spells she can place and cast at will, so long as she rolls the proper dice corresponding to a specific spell value. It’s a very, very complex game, despite the basic loop being pretty simple. You grind through 6 floors, fight enemies, level up, choose new equipment and try and beat the boss at the very end. The foes and bosses you face are completely random too, and there’s something like 60 unique flavors. If nothing else, you won’t get bored playing Dicey Dungeons at all.

As you progress through each level of the dungeon, you’ll have a few things to make your life easier. One are the aforementioned chests that contain equipment to keep you breathing, such as curative scepters, powerful shields and sharp swords. There are also random apples you can gobble down as you wander, restoring a few health. But what really has the potential to help are the vendors you encounter. One is just a standard shopkeep, and you can spend coins you earn from defeating foes to buy new items. Another trades one of your items for one of theirs, for no price. The last, and my favorite, is the blacksmith. They will upgrade any piece of equipment for free, enhancing their effects and sometimes shrinking their size so you can fit more stuff in your backpack. To store it, you rearrange blocky representations of your equipment from the pause screen.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s other aspects that spice the game up. One are Parallel Universe Episodes, which are unique challenges with special rules for each character. My only minor complaint is that this game is not for everyone, and if you’re not patient and ready for the difficulty, Dicey Dungeons can be pretty daunting. Last week I bought a set of Beats X wireless headphones. They're pretty great, and the Apple-ified system of automatically pairing them to my Mac after I pair them to my iPhone works flawlessly. Less flawless: they seem to do a worse job staying connected to both my iPhone and my computer at the same time than the Bose QC35s do. This means that every time I want to use them on my Mac after using them with my phone, I have to click the Bluetooth menu, click the headphones, and click connect.
Three clicks. In the annals of First World Problems, this is pretty near the top. Even so, I wanted to fix it. And if this were an iPhone or an iPad, I would simply have to accept that that's the way things are. But no, this is a Mac, and on a Mac we have options for fixing these small problems. I have solved dozens of these little UI hassles on Mac and Windows PCs with little tools and scripts — all of which I've cobbled together with Googling, not with actual programming skill. In this particular case, a $0.99 app called Tooth Fairy solved my problem by giving me an easy way to connect and disconnect from the Beats X headphones.
A PC is Personally Configurable in a way the iPad just isn’t
Which got me thinking: there are plenty of people who have made the iPad their main computer with great success — but I am not one of them, and I don't think I'll become one of them in the foreseeable future. Same goes for Chrome OS and Android. These operating systems are just too limited for me: when I'm annoyed by the way something works, I want to change it better suit my preferences. On Mac and Windows, you can do it. On iOS, Android, and Chrome OS, it's harder, if not impossible.
Anyway, I come not to rag on the iPad, but to praise the Mac. Specifically, the little apps that live in the menubar and make my life easier every day. I've already extolled the virtues of Alfred, which I use for keyboard shortcuts, clipboard history, and more. Here, I'd like to talk about everything that's sitting in my menubar. It's a lot.
Here’s everything, starting at the upper left and working across and down:
Bartender 2, $15
The first thing you'll notice is that it's on two lines. Most of the time, that second line is hidden away thanks to the first item on my list, Bartender 2. It lets you more fully control all the little icons in that menubar, keeping it clean looking. Stuff that's hidden away in the secondary bar can briefly appear when there's activity, otherwise it's all a click away. (It's worth noting that the System Tray on Windows does this out of the box.)
Mailplane 3, $29.95
There are many options out there for taking Gmail and Google calendar out of your tabs and into your dock as a separate app, but I'm still partial to Mailplane. Since I hide my dock by default, I allow it to put an icon in my menubar so I see when I have new email.
Tooth Fairy, $0.99
This is the app that solved my Bluetooth headphone toggle problem. It puts a little icon in your menubar, and it simply connects or disconnects from your Bluetooth headset — and shows you the connection status to boot. I've set a keyboard shortcut to it (Ctrl + ` , if you must know) to make it even easier.
SoundSource, $10 (or free with other Rogue Amoeba software)
Rogue Amoeba has been making clever Mac utilities for 15 years now, and it’s finally made the thing that I've always wanted a Mac to have. SoundSource gives you a simple menu to control your sound inputs, outputs, and volume. Basically, I use my laptop in multiple situations: plugged into a monitor with speakers, solo, with Bluetooth headphones, and with various USB audio mics and devices.
It's always been a crapshoot knowing what my audio inputs and outputs would be every time I plugged something in. Now, there's no more remembering to option-click the speaker icon or opening up system preferences. If you've purchased any of the other software the company makes (I can't recommend Audio Hijack enough), it's free.
Mac Stuff
I have a bunch of stuff built-into the Mac in my menubar, some of it is hidden and some not. I always keep the following visible: Volume, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Battery, and Time + Date. A couple notes though: I used to use Clocks in lieu of the system time because it provides a good World Clock. But now I use World Clock in the Widgets pane.
Hidden Stuff: Airplay, Spotlight, Siri, and Notification Center. The latter three are totally unnecessary for me (I use Hot Corners and keyboard shortcuts for them), but there is a kind of hellacious hack you have to go through to get them hidden in Bartender's hidden bar.
Now on to the rest of the stuff in my menubar, all of which is hidden away so I don’t have to look at it.
Karabiner-Elements, Free
This is a little utility that I use to remap the Caps Lock key to F16, which I then use to launch Alfred. It's still in beta and will eventually be replaced with a full app with a GUI, but it works for what I need it to do now. And what I need is to not have a Caps Lock key — search is much more valuable than yelling on the internet. If I want to yell, I'll hold down the Shift key for every letter like I mean it.
FullContact, $9.99 / month
Is paying 10 bucks a month for proper, trustworthy, and reliable contact sync and de-dupe across all my devices kind of ridiculous? Especially when you consider that all of my devices and cloud services purport to handle that sort of thing on their own? Yes, maybe, but I pay it and will continue to pay it until I can spare an afternoon or three and build up the gumption necessary to clean it all up myself.
1Password, $2.99 / month
Are you using a password manager? You should be. Mine's 1Password, because I've been using it forever and I trust it to be fast, sync well, and keep my data encrypted and safe. There are plenty of others — LastPass is a popular option — but you should use one. This menu bar app means I can launch it easily with a keyboard shortcut.
Annotate, $¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Finding the perfect screenshot app is hard, but I finally did it. Annotate was made by Driftt and I love it because it has a great workflow for pulling up your screenshot, marking it up if you like, and then either dragging your marked-up image to an app or uploading it to any number of services.
As of this moment, it's available for $3.99 in the Mac App Store — but it's now officially part of CloudApp. Theoretically, their free tier will continue to stay free and this app will work fine. But I'm sticking with my old version, because I do not care for whatever extra features CloudApp wants to foist on me. First Evernote ruined Skitch, now I fear for my precious Annotate.
Everything beautiful dies. Or gets bought by a productivity tools company you don't care about. And then dies.
Moom, $10
There are a million different window management apps for the Mac, but I'm a Moom fan because it does a better job with overlapping windows. Keep your precisely tiled windows to yourself, I want my stuff overlapping. Slack on the left, Chrome / Mail in the middle, Twitter on the right. Moom is also great at keyboard shortcuts for different monitor setups and switching to them automatically.
(Bonus: I also use Hyperdock, which doesn't appear in the menubar, for more window management. It shows window previews in the dock and lets me move / resize windows with keyboard + mouse combos so I don't have to move the mouse to a window edge to move or resize it.)
Dropbox, variable monthly cost
Even though Google and Apple are getting better at the basics of file sync, I'm still sticking with Dropbox for now. It hasn't done me wrong and works well across every platform I use — and that latter part is worth the money I'm paying for cloud storage.
So that's my absolutely insane menubar — built up over the course of years and tweaked more than I care to admit. But crazy as it is, it's also the reason I am happier and more productive on a Mac than I could ever be on an iPad or Chrome OS. Sure, there are extension systems for those computers, but they don't hold a candle to what I can do when the entire system is available for tweaking.
Here's one more example. Before I found Touch Fairy, I used Apple Script (again: I am not a coder at all) to solve my Bluetooth Problem. I had a problem with the way my computer worked, so I fixed it. I do the same with lots of other little scripts and Automator actions: clearing folders, renaming files, and creating custom web searches. Just knowing that this customization is even an option is why I keep coming back to “real” PCs after I use the iPad or Chrome OS.

Hitman Full Season One Review
Peter [Parrish]: Hitman 6: Hitman is officially released in full as of today, with all episodes (and bonus episodes) available in one tidy ICA pick-up package. With that being the case, we thought this would be a timely moment to provide a comprehensive review of the whole damn shooting (and pushing, and drowning) match. If you’ve read any of our prior Episode Reviews, or listened to any of the various Podcasts where Tim and I have discussed Hitman, you’ll have a pretty good idea how we feel about the game. A few specific reservations aside, we like it. A lot. In fact I even included in on my 2016 Year End Best Of list.
So, Tim, precisely how relieved are you that Hitman 6: Hitman managed to defy most of the pre-release worries and turn out to be rather splendid?
Tim [McDonald]: On a scale of one to extremely, I’d say somewhere around “very”. (Although my pre-release worries were also predicated on the fact that Hitman Absolution was absolution-ly rubbish, in addition to the standard woes about how it’s episodic and it’s sort of maybe a reboot and so on, so my woes may have been more woeful than yours.)
Peter: I’m not taking that obvious Absolution bait! … oh shit, I just did. Carry on.
Peter: I must adopt a calming Yoga pose and purge all Absolution taunts from my mind.
Tim: But it transpired that Hitman 6: Hitman: Season 1: Hitman Begins was actually really good. Like, good enough that it deserves comparisons with Blood Money, which – as everyone who isn’t wrong already knows – is the absolute paragon of Hitman-ing. As you noted it’s not without its flaws, and not every episode is a total knockout, but by and large it’s really hard to hold those flaws against it.
I think one of the first things we should properly address is the episodic structure, because that’s a structure that really does not lend itself well to every genre. I actually think it worked in Hitman‘s favour, though: the wait between episodes meant I went back and replayed each episode again and again, which is honestly kind of the point. These levels are sandboxes with a lot of interesting things to play with and a swathe of unlockables to… unlock… and it stopped me from just playing one or two maps over and over at the expense of the rest. God knows there are Blood Money levels I’ve never really revisited.
Peter: Against all my expectations, yes, the episodic structure worked out fine. It’s a little weird praising “well none of the other missions are out yet” as a successful method of getting me to replay the ones which were out, but it did mean I played the maps more than I otherwise would. The added challenges and unlocks don’t always work as an incentive to keep replaying – on the less interesting maps, their appeal wears out faster (and the barely present ‘offline’ functionality was a bad joke at launch) – but there’s a reason I have level 20 ‘mastery’ in Sapienza. We’ll probably get on to Elusive Targets and the like in due course, but those were a smart way to get people back into a level for a quick bout of assassination too.
I’ll be interested, actually, to see how people who pick up the full season end up approaching the game. In terms of whether they play through in a linear-ish way, doing all the missions straight through, or whether they stick on playing Paris a few times before moving on. Then stick on Sapienza for a few hours, and so on.
For those absolutely unaware of how Hitman works, the basic premise is this: baldy super-assassin Agent 47 is sent to an exotic international location with orders to kill various unpleasant people. He must then use his flawless powers of disguise, stealth, and creative use of inanimate objects (among other things) to carry out his task inside a sandbox-type level.
Visit beautiful Sapienza, and gaze out to sea with your fellow Miami Vice cosplayers.
Peter: As you’ve said, episodic structures will not work for every game, but having a monthly episode to dive into for anywhere between an hour to several hours felt satisfying. We’re in a pretty saturated videogame market, and I think Hitman’s promise of “hey, you can play this new episode in about an hour if you want” is quite alluring when it’s up against a bunch of 40+ hour titles in your backlog.
Tim: There is that, too. At release I only played Hokkaido once as I was quite busy at the time, and felt like I got a good “experience” out of that, even though I didn’t go back to it for a little while. That said, there were obviously lots of things I didn’t come across until a lot later.
Peter: I’ve kind of earmarked Sapienza as one of the best missions in the game (if not the best) already, but let’s get into location specifics. The great, and the not so great. Including the tutorials, which were neat little maps of their own.
Tim: Alright, so in order: Tutorial Land, Paris, Sapienza, Marrakesh, Bangkok, Colorado, Hokkaido. I don’t actually remember if Tutorial Land is given a proper location, but I do remember it’s in a hilariously implausible mountain fortress containing a balsa wood boat. As such, that is clearly the best level. More seriously, the tutorial levels do a pretty good job of teaching you the basics while also showing off the whole “there are about 19 ways you can actually do this” conceit that really does form the crux of what makes Hitman so much fun. They’re pretty decent levels in and of themselves, though; if they weren’t made out of balsa wood, they would probably have worked alright as smaller levels in a big Hitman game. I mean, hell, they’re a lot better than the tutorials in every other Hitman game combined.
Tutorial aside, there are a lot of little links between the levels, and even a fairly good difficulty curve. Paris is a big, open, fairly standard Hitman level set in one (admittedly huge) building. Sapienza is a little seaside town with a mansion, a church, a beach, a town hall, a load of shops, and a secret evil laboratory. Marrakesh is roughly split between a “hub” area, a bombed-out school full of angry soldiers, and an embassy. Bangkok is almost a return to Paris, in that it’s set in one huge building (a hotel, this time) but with a few quirks, like how the doors have electronic locks and can’t just be picked open. Colorado is one of the only truly hostile levels with no real safe zones for 47-in-his-suit, being that it’s a militia compound. Finally, Hokkaido basically puts you to the ultimate test by having you do your murdering without the luxury of taking any equipment in with you.
Tim: I think this might be one of the best screenshots I’ve ever taken.
Tim: I’m not sure if you’d agree with me, but to my mind the weakest levels are Marrakesh and Colorado. The former feels like it’s two entirely separate (and not particularly satisfying) levels shunted together with a town in between; while the latter is a little over-long, with multiple required steps that pad it out, and not a huge amount of interesting ways of doing a bad murder. It also has the most targets out of any mission, and while Hitman targets are usually caricatures at best considering their limited screen time, I can’t even remember who two of them were.
Peter: Yeah, I’m on board with those two being the worst of the set. Colorado’s gimmick of everybody being hostile to you falls apart the minute you pick up any disguise, and it’s almost all on one plain. There’s a tower or two to climb, and the main house has a couple of floors, but that’s it. I like the idea behind it, and each target’s ‘faction’ having their own little distinct area means you get some decent dialogue about rivalries and in-fighting and stuff, but the spacial design just isn’t that interesting. Plus you have to do that whole, unskippable ‘plot’ part at the end every time you replay the main level which gets tedious.
Oh, and there’s a target in a Mike Myers mask but you can���t (at least when I played it) disguise yourself as him. What the hell, IO?
Marrakesh had the misfortune to follow Paris and Sapienza, which had started the game off with burst of quality and then got even better. I’m not saying it’s a misjudged level or anything, I do think it’s pretty ordinary (traversal is a massive pain), but for a while it looked even worse because it was the obvious runt of the initial three. It does have my favourite ‘fuck all bankers and military coups’ premise though.
And you can drop a moose on someone’s head, which is honestly pretty outstanding.
Tim: Next up are Paris and Bangkok, both of which are entirely serviceable. These are the levels that are most easily damned by faint praise: they don’t have much in the way of actual concrete problems (and I’ll forgive Paris a few flaws, since it’s the very first level and needs to ease people in a little) but they also don’t do anything particularly exciting. Of the two, I probably prefer Paris, but that might just be because I know it better and a few of the game’s long-standing problems hadn’t gotten to me yet. And I’ve just damned them with faint praise, haven’t I? They’re good levels! I played them a lot! They’re not particularly exceptional, but they’re still good levels. I mean, if the entire game had been six levels like that, I’d have been happy. A little complain-y that there wasn’t anything staggeringly exceptional, but just pleased that there was a set of decent new Hitman missions.
Finally, the crown jewels are Sapienza and Hokkaido. I know you’re itching to talk about Sapienza, so go on. Do it.
Peter: I will, but first I’m going to give Paris and Bangkok a few more dues. Paris has Agent 47 strutting down a catwalk as Helmut Krugar, dressing up as a vampire, and dropping a shitload of expensive architecture on top of a fashion show. The kills hadn’t reached their creative peak yet (lots of fairly boring poisonings and the like), but there were plenty of darkly silly moments to enjoy. Meanwhile, in Bangkok you can pull off a drum solo and then murder someone with a birthday cake. I do know what you mean about them occupying the ‘solid, dependable mission’ spots in the roster, but they definitely have their own charms. Bangkok might be my second most played mission, even.
However, it’s eclipsed by Sapienza, which is the best. IO know it’s the best; they set a whole bunch of Elusive Targets, post-release challenges, and entire bonus missions there. Why? Because it’s the most comprehensive realisation of a ‘living’, functioning location in the game. That means there are (or were, they’re pretty much covered now) plenty of streets, buildings, and areas to base little side missions, like the Elusive Target that had you offing a prospective Pope in the town church. You can go to the church in the main mission – some of the challenges and specific kills utilise it – but it’s quite easy to just bypass it entirely and still finish the mission.
Alternatively you can spend your life crouched in the graveyard like some kind of creep.
Tim: I think Bangkok is the one we most disagree on; I might rate it a little lower than Paris (which I really like!) but I honestly need to play it again. And I suspect you’re right and they agree Sapienza is The Best, but I also wonder if the sheer wealth of bonus content set there is simply the fact that it’s a wide-open location, which lends itself to a ridiculous amount of variety.
Peter: But that’s why it’s the best! Anyway, the premise is great; a mother-obsessed eccentric and his increasingly frustrated chief scientist, both of whom are working on a deadly virus grown in a James Bond lab underneath a mansion. I love pretending to be a Ghost Mum. I love posing as a private detective working on behalf of the scientist lady. I love being able to dress up as a crafty mime artist or plague doctor. I love that all the mansion guards (on the top level at least) are straight out of Miami Vice. The only part of Sapienza I don’t especially love is having to destroy the virus every single time; but luckily that’s very, very easy to do.
Hokkaido was designed by the same guy who made Sapienza, and also has a strong sense of place and purpose. I’m guessing we’ve both played that the least, since it came out recently-ish, but what I’ve played of that has been pretty terrific.
Tim: Pretty much. If I’m starting to get bored of Sapienza – and I kind of am, because I’ve done 2,557 Elusive Targets there – then that’s okay, because Hokkaido still exists. It’s interesting that it’s got the same designer as Sapienza, because while there are similarities (as you noted, the cohesive sense that it’s an actual living location rather than a set of rooms slapped together) they’re also two of the most diametrically opposed missions in the game.
Peter: To clarify, it has the same design lead or level director or whatever. I’m not trying to credit him with everything, as I’m sure each map had loads of different people working on them.
Agent 47 takes the ‘surgical precision’ metaphor a little too far.
Tim: To go backwards a little way, Sapienza is a sprawling area full of stuff to do without ever setting foot in the mission-critical area that is the mansion. You can take a sniper rifle and find an opportune nest, or sneak into the church and nick some priestly garb, or dozens of other things. Start off in the kitchens if you like, and have some remote mines smuggled in. Conversely, Hokkaido’s sci-fi clinic is one of the most beautifully constrained levels in the entire game: no equipment but what you find, and a very limited degree of freedom in terms of where you can initially go. 47 is posing as a patient in this super-secure surgery, and doors only slide open if the computer detects you’re wearing clothing with the correct authorisation to be there.
There are still plenty of ways to do things, of course (and posing as the yoga instructor to push one of your targets off the edge of the building is one of my absolute favourites) but there’s more to it than that. The shiny veneer of the public areas gives way to the corridors and bedrooms used by the staff, and the labs and surgeries below. While Sapienza was an exercise in building an open area that feels real, Hokkaido goes in entirely the opposite direction and focuses its attention solely on one smaller location. The fact that it works as well as it does is almost absurd.
While we’re on the topic of levels, I do want to throw out an obligatory mention to Blood Money‘s suburban A New Life mission, and note a touch of disappointment that there’s nothing quite like that here. That mission felt like one of the smallest Hitman levels, in that almost all of the action took place in one small house, despite the surrounding street and neighbouring homes offering up yet more possibilities. Nonetheless, that tiny amount of space had an absolute raft of stuff to do and all sorts of possible ways to kill your targets. This is maybe one of the problems with Hitman 6: Hitman‘s episodic nature, in that a level like that simply wouldn’t have offered a satisfying release. Being that it’s probably on par with the tutorial levels in terms of size it probably would’ve had to have been part of a pack of mini-missions, and I can understand IO preferring to spend their time on wider levels with more possibilities for Elusive Targets and the like, but still.
Who exactly is the ICA contracting to build all this amazing training equipment?
Peter: The tutorial boat level is probably the closest in terms of ‘self-contained but quite a lot to do’, really. But it’s also a tutorial level so it doesn’t go the whole way like A New Life did. I think there’s a way open for IO to do something like that within the episodic framework, but they may have to release two smaller levels at once or something. It’s a shame that some might see A New Life equivalent as lacking ‘value’ (when it really doesn’t). They probably don’t want to risk that backlash, though.
Tim: Yeah. A New Life is a very small toybox, but a toybox in which every toy is a whole lot of fun. It’s a very different design approach to what Hitman 6 has been doing, but no less valuable. I think they tried to do something like this with the little pack of missions that actually had a new layout in Sapienza and so on, but those didn’t really come close to it – they were still somewhat constrained by the pre-existing level.
Peter: While we’re on things that aren’t so great in Hitman, I’ll revisit the poor excuse for an offline mode for the 300th time. For the first few months it was pathetic; you could play offline, but nothing would be unlocked if you did (and it wouldn’t ‘remember’ anything you’d done online either, so you were always playing the levels at 0 mastery). The servers were also pretty sketchy throughout Paris’ release period, so a lot of people got to experience just how rubbish offline play was. Things have improved a bit. Outside of scheduled maintenance, I’ve not found many problems with the servers since the release of … oooh, around Marrakesh or so. Offline play is now a separate save, where you can actually unlock things.
Quite why the game can’t periodically ‘update’ your offline profile with things you’ve done and unlocked online, and (when you’ve played offline) upload any progress to your ongoing online profile to keep them roughly the same, I don’t know. But I’m also not a software coder. Anyway, the bottom line is Hitman really does need to be played online basically all the time. That’s not going to be a problem for most, but it’ll still be an issue to a minority out there.
I’ve also never quite found the right balance between lots/minimal/no guidance for Hitman 6: Hitman’s Opportunities. The happy medium should be minimal info, where it’ll give you details like ‘hey, you should go do [thing] now’ and leave it up to you to figure out what that means. But there are enough instances where, actually, having some idea where on this gigantic map a tiny, vital object for your plan might be, is pretty crucial. Turning on FULL QUEST ARROWS FOR EVERYTHING is definitely too much for me, but I’ve made temporary use of them when some of the more obscure Opportunities have felt like bullshit treasure hunts.
Still, at least there are ways of getting out any frustration.
Tim: I’ll note that this is a problem even with guidance on, at times. I’m not sure who the hell decides where wrenches and screwdrivers should be kept in the Hitman universe, but I wish they’d start thinking about garages and toolboxes rather than the utterly random places they keep leaving the bloody things in this game. Season 2 had better deal with the conspiracy of asshole plumbers and electricians who keep hiding their tools in weird places, or I’m calling bullshit. (Unless they’re fed up with getting the blame for all these “accidental” electrocutions, so they’re trying to keep the tools hidden… but I digress.)
That said, there is some joy to be found in this. I mean, once I discovered I could murder someone by dropping a toilet on them, I spent my immediate future playing the level in question a few times to figure out exactly how to do this, because who doesn’t want to drop a toilet on someone? This was one of the examples that was never really spelled out – I just noted that it was a possibility and figured it out from there. And it was great.
Peter: As you can tell from the voice acting, all of those plumbers are actually the same very eccentric person. That’s why the tools are all over the place. I’ve kind of gone back and forth on Hitman’s limited voice cast. By the end of the ‘season’ I’d pretty much settled on it being weird and charming that every single international location is populated by the same five people. It gave a bizarre kind of stagey continuity to everything. Like each mission was another season of American Horror Story or something.
Speaking of horror stories.
Tim: Those six main missions aside, there’s also a raft of extra content. There’s the obligatory Challenge Your Friends To Murder mode in Contracts, as well as the Elusive Targets which can only be attempted once and only crop up for a few (real-time!) days, plus the Escalation missions. The latter challenge you to do the same hit multiple times, but with increasingly stringent requirements each time. “Murder this guy” followed by “Murder this guy with a spatula” followed by “Murder this guy with a spatula, while dressed as a clown”, etc.
This might just be me, but I don’t have a great deal of love for these bonus things. I’m happy it’s there, if only because it makes everything feel a lot more “complete” and continuous, but none of these things are really as good as the base missions themselves. That’s purely subjective, of course: I’m sure there are those who only play it to create their own Contracts, and those who consider mastery of all the Escalation challenges to be of paramount importance. And that’s fine! I just find it to be mildly repetitive bonus stuff, but I don’t think there’s anything remotely bad about it.
Peter: Like some of the other things we’ve mentioned, Contracts have improved over the last few months in terms of adding specifics and being able to search for and share them more easily and stuff. IO have been fairly consistent in making improvements to the game as they’ve gone along (even if those improvements aren’t always what people have been shouting the loudest for), adding things like the ability for Agent 47 to pull someone over a ledge from below. Granted, it took three patches and probably should have been there from the beginning; but hey, that’s the sort of bonus you get for waiting on the full season.
You can afford to take your time with the missions. Kick back. Have a drink. Dig out an alias.
Tim: And none of this impacts how much I like the base game, anyway. Six missions (plus the tutorial stuff, plus all the bonus content) might not sound like much, but it really, really is. Even noting that a couple of the levels are a bit duff still adds up to four incredibly entertaining and replayable murder sandboxes, and they’re far more replayable than most of the levels from past games. Blood Money had a lot of superb levels that everyone remembers, but it also had Death on the Mississippi, and even the worst levels from Nu-Hitman still have a fair bit going for them.
Peter: Yeah, I think it’s pretty likely most people will play Colorado and Marrakesh a couple of times through, even if they don’t warm to them as much as the others.
As people had hoped, this is the best Hitman has been since Blood Money. It’s arguably straight out the best Hitman has been as a series. When it’s doing the murdery-sandbox thing (as opposed to the third-person stealth shooter Absolution thing), there isn’t really any other game like it; so when it’s doing it well, that’s something of considerable note. It beat out my pre-release cynicism and won me over across the course of the whole year.
If you want to find out what this Hitman business is all about, this title (especially now it’s available in full) is a great place to give it a try. If you already know, then the missions and design structures here should be ample sustenance for your assassination-tuned brain.
Tim: I still can’t decide whether I hold Hitman 6 in quite as much acclaim as I do Blood Money, but the fact that it’s even up for contention says an awful lot about this latest globe-trotting murder-venture. This darkly comic, icy cool stealth/brain-teaser/drop-a-toilet-on-a-target’s-head-’em-up is, taken as a whole, a fantastic package.
