Happy Women's Day! Support Women Artists Now!
Happy Women's Day! Support Women Artists Now! Mouseion Online Art Exhibition Celebrating Women and Non-Binary Artists And here is the link: https://assets.artplacer.com/virtual-exhibitions/?i=13997
We, the organisers of this exhibition - MAriska MA Veepilaikaliyamma and Sarah Marquesen, are delighted to see such a unique creative diversity and are happy to celebrate with all of you women's herstory month in form of this online virtual art exhibition.
Mouseion means Temple of the Muses and the word Museum is derived from it.
Artists throughout the ages have regarded women as muses. The museums are full of paintings of women, mostly in positions and postures satisfying the male gaze. Depictions of strong and independent women are rare and what is the rarest in museums–artworks by women artists. Museums all over the world still choose to organize exhibitions for male artists, praising them as geniuses for their visions, while many women artists do not get any recognition. In former times, they have been even declared insane and confined to psychiatric asylums.
We do not wait until the museums open their gates for us. They are patriarchal systems which do not give space to women. We are done with begging for acceptance. We start the creation of our own spaces...

Title: Pieces of Me
Material: photograph, water color on panel
Size: 8 inches
I took the self portraits at Geoje Island in Korea. The rocks reminded me of Pfeiffer Beach, California. I loved the view and was inspired by the nature.
I used photos as a medium to create my nature drawings. I tore them as naturally as I could to try to use them like flower petals.
Recently, I created many circles as a way to find relief. Circles give me comfort, satisfaction, and zen.
I am participating in NCWCA's The 6000 Circle Project. It will be presented with woman artists to honor feminine energy. The exhibition will be at the Arc Project Gallery from February 24 through April 6, 2024.

Thanks to @nowbehereart for featuring my work! ❤️❤️❤️ Posted @withregram • @nowbehereart Karen Mainenti (@kmainenti) appropriates text and images from consumer products, advertising, and media in her work. By reframing these messages—often with humor—she attempts to reveal the absurdity and unnatural expectations that society has come to accept as commonplace. In her "Message in a Bottle" series, she explores the contradiction of women’s simultaneous embrace and skepticism of women’s beauty products; questions of product efficacy are often eclipsed by the irresistible promise of faith, belief, and transformation. The products depicted are common products that women keep in their medicine cabinets today but for many, Mainenti has replaced the product name with text extracted from the headlines of 1950’s-era beauty advertisements. You can see more of Karen Mainenti's work currently on view in "Brooklyn Utopias: Along the Canal" curated by Katherine Gressel (@eventpaintingbykatherine) at the Old Stone House in Gowanus Brooklyn (@oldstonehousebklyn) through June 26. Mainenti has had solo exhibitions of her work at the 2019 SPRING/BREAK Art Show (@springbreakartshow), Bard Graduate Center Library (@bardgradcenter), Ground Floor Gallery (@groundfloorbk), and Chashama (@chashama). Select group exhibitions include Untitled Space (@untitledspaceny), DUMBO Arts Festival, and Trestle Gallery. Her artwork has received coverage in ARTnews, Artnet News, Hyperallergic, Gothamist, Brooklyn Magazine, Gallery Gurls, and The Believer Magazine, among others. Mainenti is deeply connected to the Gowanus, Brooklyn arts community through collaboration with artist Sasha Chavchavadze (@sashachav) on Footnote project space (@footnoteprojects) and serving on the board of directors of Arts Gowanus (@artsgowanus). Karen Mainenti, Message in a Bottle, 2019 #NowBeHereArt #WomenArtists #NonBinaryArtists #KarenMainenti #FeministArt #BrooklynArt #ArtsGowanus #ConceptualArt https://www.instagram.com/p/CfLDm4qMYfZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ria Brodell’s “Butch Heroes” series offers portraits of heroic figures whose stories are seldom told. They are individuals who were assigned female at birth but whose gender presentation was more masculine than feminine, who did not want to enter into heterosexual marriage, and who often faced dire punishment for being themselves. Brodell (they/them) is a non-binary trans artist based in Boston.
Here’s one example from Brodell’s “Butch Heroes” series.
Image: D. Catalina “Antonio” de Erauso, 1592-1650, New Spain, 2011 Gouache on paper, text, 11 x 7 in.
Biography of Catalina de Erauso (Edited version)
Catalina de Erauso was born in San Sebastián, Spain, to a noble Basque family and was raised in a convent from an early age. Before taking her vows, she fled dressed in men’s clothes and assumed the name Francisco de Loyola. Francisco worked as a page for a few years before deciding to seek adventure in the New World, sailing to Panama as a cabin boy. After arriving in New Spain, Francisco enlisted in the Spanish army under the name Alonso Díaz Ramírez de Guzmán and became a successful soldier. However, Alonso got embroiled in much trouble, including trouble with women. After deserting the army, Alonso was pursued by authorities for various offenses and eventually wounded in a duel. On the verge of death, Alonso revealed that he was a woman. Alonso recovered and was examined by midwives who confirmed that she was a woman and a virgin. Eventually, Catalina de Erauso became a celebrity known as the “Lieutenant Nun.” She petitioned King Philip IV for a military pension and visited Pope Urban VIII with a request to be allowed to continue to dress as a man. She was granted both requests. Drauso returned to New Spain as Antonio de Erauso and retired as a mule driver and merchant.

This piece I made by mouse. I'm trying to convey something I can't seem to put into words yet so I made this instead. This is called "holes in the Earth" . . . This is also my first piece in the colorblind filter so it may look strange to others. I'm not sure how that's going be or if it will be different at all to other people

I am NB but, I am masculine presenting. It is so validating when I am referred to by customers as "sir". Especially considering I am a smol af.
