“I did assault her and I will do it again,” he said. “And if I need to be 10 years in prison I’m happy to be 10 years in prison.” Says a man fled anyway.
The trans activist who threw tomato juice on a women’s rights campaigner during a free speech event in Auckland has been charged with common assault and appears to be fleeing from New Zealand authorities as a result.
Eliana Rubashkyn, also known as Eliana Golberstein and Eliana Rubinstein, is a male who identifies as transgender and intersex and uses “they/them” pronouns. On March 25, Rubashkyn attacked women’s rights campaigner Kellie-Jay Keen during what was supposed to be a peaceful women’s rights demonstration.
Keen, also known by her moniker Posie Parker, had arranged for a speaking tour of New Zealand centered around giving women the platform to express their thoughts on gender ideology. But she was forced to cut the tour short after being met with extreme aggression at her first stop in Auckland at Albert Park.
Tumblr media
As Keen approached the bandstand in the park, where she was set to speak to a crowd of approximately 200 supporters, Rubashkyn dumped a liter of tomato juice onto her and her security detail. Videos of the incident have since circulated on social media, and Rubashkyn told a local news station that he was able to approach Keen because he lied about his identity and pretended to be a supporter of hers.
Following the event, Rubashkyn gave an interview where he claimed that he targeted Keen because “her words are blood because they are killing our people.” He continued: “That tomato juice represents the blood of the people she is trying to kill.”
Rubashkyn also addressed the crowd after Keen was escorted away from the park by police, and stated that he wanted Keen to be “full of blood … because she’s advocating for our genocide.”
Information on Rubashkyn’s charge was first reported by Newsable, which received a statement from Rubashkyn where he again claimed the assault and suggested he was comfortable facing justice.
“I did assault her and I will do it again,” he said. “And if I need to be 10 years in prison I’m happy to be 10 years in prison.”
But despite his words, Rubashkyn fled New Zealand shortly after being made aware that police were planning on issuing a warrant for his arrest on charges of assault.
His latest travel-related post suggests he has now left Australia and is en route to the United States.
Tumblr media
A fundraiser has been launched to support Rubashkyn, citing support for a legal defense fund as well as “personal security needs.” It has since raised just over $1,300 as of the writing of this article. The fundraising campaign is currently under review by GiveALittle, and some on social media have noted it is likely against the platform’s terms of service to be fundraising for a known fugitive.
Rubashkyn is originally Jewish-Ukrainian from Colombia, but currently lives in New Zealand. He has worked with the UN and as a Program Officer at ILGA World (the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association). Much of his origin story and gender identity has come into question after a March 28 Twitter space wherein Rubashkyn appeared incoherent at times while addressing a live audience for almost 8 continuous hours.
During the space, Rubashkyn made a number of anti-lesbian, racist, sexist, and violent remarks, including that trans-identified males were the “first victims” of the Holocaust.
“Trans women were the first victims of Nazism. Trans women were killed before the Jews were sent to concentration camps,” he said, continuing: “In the 1930s, Nazis relied on TERFs to promote hate… TERFs became holders of concentration camps for females. TERFs were quite instrumental in the system that the Nazis built for making more babies… to keep Nazi Germany growing.”
Rubashkyn claims to be Jewish and says he can speak fluent Hebrew, but seemed to be unable to understand a Hebrew speaker who challenged him on his assertion.
In addition to the marathon space, Rubashkyn also uploaded a video to his Twitter account in which he was seen sobbing while claiming there was a “trans genocide” occurring, and that “Nazis” were trying to murder him.
“I am so full of joy because I am trans, but I am so scared because they want to kill me. The Nazis, they are– they just really want to get you.”
Tumblr media
The March 25 event was part of an international Let Women Speak tour hosted by British women’s rights campaigner Kellie-Jay Keen. Keen has hosted rallies across the UK, USA, and Australia encouraging women to use her platform to speak about how gender ideology has impacted their lives.
While Keen’s events are often met with hostility, the New Zealand rally descended into violence so rapidly that it had to be cancelled before it could even begin.
As she arrived at the Albert Park venue, Keen went live on her YouTube channel as she usually does to provide her supporters updates from the event.
Immediately, the scene was chaotic as police did not appear to be present. Those watching from a distance through the YouTube stream were able to see Keen being led by her security though a braying crowd of trans activists. Once she managed to make it to the stage, Keen could immediately be heard expressing concerns about the lack of police presence.
Keen and her supporters were quickly surrounded by an increasingly aggressive mob of trans protestors. The activists broke through established barriers, and didn’t take long before the decision was made to cancel the event and leave for the safety of all involved.
In addition to Keen having been assaulted by Rubashkyn, an elderly woman who had attended the demonstration in support of Keen was battered in the face by a male trans activist.
Tumblr media
The woman, who is said to be in her 70s, was left with a darkly blackened eye after being both head-butted and punched in the face. Videos of the assault went viral on Twitter as multiple angles of the altercation between the elderly woman and the male trans activist began to leak in the aftermath of the rally.

25th of April each year marks ANZAC Day.
Anzac Day is always marked on 25 April because it is the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings during the First World War.
On 25th April 1915, Anzacs joined the Allied Forces and entered the First World War, launching an expedition to the Gallipoli peninsula. Among the battalions of the British 29th Division that took heavy casualties were 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers, a regular battalion, and 1/5th Royal Scots, a Territorial unit
The plan was to capture the land and gain access to the Dardanelles, a thin strip of water between Gallipoli and mainland Turkey.
It was a key location, as capturing it would have meant Allied ships would be able to get through to the Black Sea, and also Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey), the then capital of the Ottoman Empire, which was fighting alongside the Germans.
But while the attack was supposed to be a surprise and victory achieved quickly, the fighting continued for eight months and finished in a stalemate, with huge losses on both sides. Of the 56,000 Allied troops who died, 8,709 were from Australia, and 2,721 from New Zealand.
Australia marks Anzac Day with marches by veterans, as well as serving members of the Australian Defence Force and Reserves, allied veterans, Australian Defence Force Cadets and Australian Air League.
New Zealand marks the day in a similar way, with marches attended by the New Zealand Defence Force, the New Zealand Cadet Forces, members of the New Zealand Police, New Zealand Fire Service and Order of St John Ambulance Service.
Paper poppies are worn as symbols of remembrance, as they are on Remembrance Sunday in the UK and other Commonwealth countries.
Australians gathered for dawn services on Monday morning, the return to full-scale commemorations for the first time since 2019 due to the covid pandemic.
Eric Bogle is a Scottish folk singer-songwriter. Born and raised in Scotland, he emigrated to Australia at the age of 25, he wrote this song in 1971....
AND THE BAND PLAYED WALTZING MATILDA
Now when I was a young man, I carried me pack And I lived the free life of the rover From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over Then in 1915, my country said "son It's time you stopped rambling, there's work to be done" So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun And they marched me away to the war
And the band played Waltzing Matilda As the ship pulled away from the quay And amidst all the cheers, the flag-waving and tears We sailed off for Gallipoli
And how well I remember that terrible day How our blood stained the sand and the water And of how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter Johnny Turk, he was waiting, he'd primed himself well He showered us with bullets and he rained us with shell And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell Nearly blew us right back to Australia
But the band played Waltzing Matilda When we stopped to bury our slain We buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs Then we started all over again
And those that were left, well we tried to survive In that mad world of blood, death and fire And for ten weary weeks, I kept myself alive Though around me the corpses piled higher Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head And when I woke up in me hospital bed And saw what it had done, well I wished I was dead Never knew there was worse things than dyin'
For I'll go no more waltzing Matilda All around the green bush far and free To hump tent and pegs, a man needs both legs No more waltzing Matilda for me
So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed And they shipped us back home to Australia The legless, the armless, the blind, the insane Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay I looked at the place where me legs used to be And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me To grieve, to mourn, and to pity
But the band played Waltzing Matilda As they carried us down the gangway But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared Then they turned all their faces away
And so now every April, I sit on me porch And I watch the parades pass before me And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march Reviving old dreams of past glories And the old men march slowly, old bones stiff and sore They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war And the young people ask, "what are they marching for?" And I ask myself the same question
But the band plays Waltzing Matilda And the old men still answer the call But as year follows year, more old men disappear Someday no one will march there at all
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me? And their ghosts may be heard As they march by that billabong Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?

There was a time when you could count on the left to defend science with the sort of zeal that would make a religious fundamentalist blush. Scientific knowledge was once gleefully wielded to expose and mock the magical thinking of creationists, anti-vaxxers, Flat Earthers, astrologers and homoeopaths. However, this staunch commitment to scientific empiricism has recently begun to waver. It is now increasingly coming into conflict with the new tenets of the ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ (DEI) agenda.
You can see this clearly in the Biden administration’s proposed new guidelines for the US Department of Health and Human Services (HSS). As the Washington Free Beacon reports, staff working in public-health agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDA), which are overseen by the HSS, could soon be instructed to consider ‘multiple forms of evidence, such as indigenous knowledge’ when going about their duties.
Put simply, advocates of ‘indigenous knowledge’ argue that various cultures throughout history have their own ways of understanding the world. And these alternative, indigenous ‘ways of knowing’, they say, should be utilised alongside more established scientific methods in research and in policymaking.
Yes, some DEI advocates really do think that public-health bodies should seek the input of tribal elders and spiritual leaders – alongside, say, qualified physicians and epidemiologists. What’s more, they believe that racism is the only reason it has taken so long for indigenous knowledge to be utilised in this way. They argue that science is a ‘Western, colonialist structure’ that has only come to dominate our thinking thanks to white supremacy. This nefarious falsehood began in academia, with calls from activists to ‘decolonise’ science. Now it has reached the highest levels of the US government.
The Biden administration is not even the first Western government to sacrifice science to the DEI agenda. Last year, the government of New Zealand decided that science classes in schools should teach that Maori ‘ways of knowing’ have equal standing to ‘Western science’. Scientists who objected to this found themselves under investigation by the Royal Society of New Zealand. Three of them, including one of Maori descent, resigned from the society in protest.
The claim that science is ‘Western’ is absurd, of course. One of the many wonderful things about science is that it does not discriminate. Science is a universal, cross-cultural concept. It invites anyone and everyone to participate and contribute to our growing understanding of reality. Science does not care about what you look like or where you come from. All science cares about is whether your methods and conclusions are sound enough to survive scrutiny. This clearly cannot be said for indigenous knowledge.
This is why there aren’t any ‘indigenous’ ways of flying an airplane that supersede our scientific understanding of aerodynamics. Or why the NHS doesn’t offer exorcisms as part of its mental-health services. A blood test administered in a clinical setting will yield the same results whether it’s carried out in London or Nairobi – because science actually works anywhere you do it. It’s about the ‘how’, not the ‘who’.
If every single piece of scientific knowledge were erased tomorrow and we had to start all over again, we would eventually come to the same conclusions as we have today. This is not true of indigenous knowledge, because, unlike science, it is not underpinned by logic and reason.
We all know that treating indigenous knowledge as akin to scientific evidence is a bit silly. But I suspect that is probably the point. Like with trans-rights ideologues, today’s self-professed ‘anti-racists’ like to frame statements of the obvious as akin to acts of bigotry. It gives them enormous power over the rest of us. We are all essentially being dared to say that relying on indigenous knowledge is a terrible idea. Of course, if you do say this in the wrong circles, you will be accused of racism and you will be silenced.
With modern-day anti-racism, the goal is not to address actual inequalities or to improve the material wellbeing of oppressed minorities. The real aim is to tear down anything that is perceived to be ‘white’ or ‘Western’. And the fact that science is now being placed in the firing line, thanks to racial identity politics, should worry us all.
The suggestion that the gold standard of science is a uniquely white or Western standard is as ludicrous as it is racist. It perpetuates the deeply prejudiced idea that non-Western or non-white groups cannot grasp the basics of science, and therefore it would be unfair to expect them to. This is tantamount to claiming there is an innate quality possessed by white Westerners that makes them uniquely suited to the study and advancement of science. This notion would not seem out of place at a KKK rally, yet it is a depressingly common view among so-called anti-racists. This is the bigotry of low expectations.
The push by the White House to incorporate indigenous knowledge into public-health policy is unbelievably reckless. It arrives in a post-pandemic context when public trust in our scientific institutions is already at an all-time low. Surely, that trust will now only fall further. After all, how can we possibly trust that those tasked with looking after our health are doing so effectively, when their objectivity has been so clearly compromised?
Science often gets things wrong, of course. But unlike indigenous ways of knowing, science rewards you for catching errors. It incentivises the pursuit of truth over accepting received wisdom. There are no religious commandments or cultural dogmas dictating the scope of scientific investigation. Science simply finds out ‘what is’ – and to hell with any sacred cows that are slaughtered along the way.
Standards of objectivity are essential when it comes to science and public health. We should make no apologies for defending them from the encroachment of pseudoscience, whatever form it comes in.

It sounded like a good idea when you first got started in the morning
The soft 40’s style curls Riley loved so much were the first thing you started to work on as soon as he left your room this morning (because lord knows foam rollers take forever to set correctly)
A long bath, followed by your shea body butter and a sultry makeup followed much later in the evening
And at last getting dressed in your fancy blood red vintage style lingerie you brought along in your suitcase and some perfume were the last touch for the night
It all sounded incredibly perfect, until Riley texted you saying he was going to get ready in Jay’s room so you could head downtown for a date night. That was when insecurities really started to kicked in
Whenever you looked at your own reflection in the mirror, every possible doubt crossed your mind and you saw a flaw on everything
Your makeup suddenly didn’t look nice, your curls seemed flat, the lingerie was one number too small than it was supposed to, the heels didn’t match the lace properly, your boobs looked weird in that bra…everything was unexpectedly problematic
You were trying to figure it out how many minutes would it take for you to get rid of this and hop on the shower before Riley was back when suddenly the hotel bedroom opened.
You only had time to murmur a “Shit!” Before you tightly closed the bathrobe around your body. “Hey” You tried to sound normal as Riley finished locking the door.
“Hey” He turned around and the small movement was enough to make the scent of his cologne travel to your nostrils. “Well, hello there” Riley’s blue eyes instantly darkened with lust as he measured your covered body from head to toe with his eyes. “Loved the hair”
“Thank you….so ummmm….what do you want to do? Do you wanna-“
“I wanna see what’s underneath the robe” He took slow, predatory steps towards you with a smirk “What are you hiding in there, huh?”
“Nothing” You replied as fast as you could
“Nothing?” Riley dipped his head down until he was mere inches away from your lips “That’s even better”
His hands quickly undid the robe belt and pushed the soft fabric down your shoulders. Riley took a step back and sat on the bed to take in the sight in front of him.
“Damn, bunny” He growled as his hand came down to adjust his painful erection “Are you trying to kill me?”. Seeing the small frown between your eyebrows and quickly realizing what was going on inside your head, Riley clasped his teeth on the hem of your red lace panties and pulled you towards him.
“You look fucking stunning!” He murmured against your skin before pulling you down to straddle his hips
“D-do you think so?” You shivered as his fingertips roamed through your soft skin
“Here, see it for yourself” Riley took your hand and dipped in between your bodies, traveling down to his crotch. Your fingers bumped against the incredibly hard length and his eyes grew even darker with need.
“You’re so fucking hot, bunny. So fucking sexy, perfect and all mine” Riley’s hands played with the hem of the pantyhose covering your thighs before letting his hands travel down the soft fabric as he caressed your thighs “I fucking love these!” He moaned at the feeling of the pantyhose against his fingertips.
You giggled “I know you do, that’s why I brought them along”.
His eyes gleamed with mischief “You know, I hope you’re good with room service for tonight because I don’t plan on leaving this room”.
“But I thought you wanted a date night” You chuckled when Riley quickly pinned you back down on the mattress “Oh I do have a date night” He pulled your bottom lip with his teeth “With my sexy pinup hooker”
And just like that you knew that would be your roleplay for the rest of the night.

Happy birthday BRUCE MCLAREN!!!!! (30/08/1937 - ∞) 🧡💗⚡
“Life is measured in achievements, not in years alone.”
Bruce Leslie McLaren was born in Auckland, New Zealand, he was the son of Les and Ruth Mclaren and was the middle child of three: he had an older sister, called Patricia and a younger one, called Janice. His father, Les, used to compete in two-wheel local races, along with his brothers; but after suffering an injury, he saw himself forced to compete on four wheels. From an early age, Bruce was 'immersed', not only in the world of racing, but of mechanics too: his father owned a service station, equipped with a small workshop, which soon became Bruce's playground; little Bruce used to pretend-play he was 'fixing' his trike, so whenever tools dissapeared, everyone knew who to blame. But soon Bruce's life would abruptly change forever: at-nine-and-a-half years old, he started to feel a sharp pain in his left hip, and developed a slight limp. Mistaken at first for polio, after a couple x-rays, the specialists determined that young Bruce contracted 'Pethese Disease', which meant that his body had cut off the blood supply to the top of his femur. The only cure was to lay down and rest; at first they said for several months, but unfortunately, it dragged on for two years, that he would end up spending in the Wilson Home for crippled children. Left with the left leg shorter than the other, and with a slight limp that he will have for the rest of his life, Bruce had to learn to walk again: first with a wheelchair, then with the help of crutches. As his fascination for mechanics grew, he enrolled for an engineering course at an Auckland college, he left the crutches behind as he was slowly getting his life and freedom back.
In 1952, Les wanted to buy a car to restore, so that he could later sell it and make a profit from it. His big chance came when he bought a 1929 Austin 7 Ulster for only 110$, the only problem was that it came in pieces, so father and son joined forces and worked together on the car tirelessly, but the result was worth it: an open-topped, spoke-wheeled, chrome-grilled, fiery red racing model, ready to hit the race track. Upon seeing the result, something clicked in Bruce's brain, as its roaring engine called for him. With his pure excitment, he persuaded his father in to keeping the Ulster, determined in wanting to learn how to drive it, and the only place where he could do that was the family's garden. Excitment grew even more when Les entered the car for an hill climb race at the Muriwai beach, with the intention to drive it, but unfortunetly he fell sick, leaving Bruce to take the place in the driver's seat. Bruce would compete in his first race, and proceed to win it, getting the first taste of victory. He was only 15 years old. Yet his real official race debut, will come two years later, at the wheel of a Ford 10 Special, at the New Zealand Grand Prix.
Bruce kept on shining, showing his worth at every race he took part in, and in the meantime, he kept developing his mechanical skills, always with his dad by his side. In 1957, New Zealand was part of the 'Driver to Europe' programme, that aimed to help Kiwi drivers to be able to race in the top Formulas, Bruce of course was part of the short list, and given his racing talent and mechanical skills, he was eventually chosen to leave for England, leaving his family behind for the first time. As he was well welcomed in the Cooper team, he graduated to a Formula 2 Cooper-Climax. However, as he was still driving in F2, and leading the championship, he would have his Formula 1 debut at the 1958 German Grand Prix, due to a sudden decision that saw both F1 and F2 cars, compete in the same race. Bruce would finish the race overall in 5th place, meanwhile in the F2 category he finished 1st, meaning that he won the F2 championship.
In 1959, after his big success, he got promoted to F1, racing along side Jack Brabham in the Cooper team. Bruce accepted his role as second driver, and was taken under Jack's wing; he would go and surprisingly have a very successfull first year, where he would score his first podium at US GP, becoming the youngest grand prix winner (he was only 22 year old). The next season was once more very successful: he gained another victory, this time at the Argentinian GP, and ended the season as runner up in the championship, just behind Jack; the following year Jack would leave the team, leaving Bruce to become the lead driver. His third podium would come in 1962, on the most prestigious race track in F1, that is Monaco.
The next year, inspired by now his ex-teammate, Jack, Bruce decided to form his own team, which turned out to be not an easy thing to do, but with some sacrifices and determination, what once was only an idea, will later become real: only after two years spent mainly competing in sports cars races, Tasman series and Bruce taking part in testing sessions to gain more money, he took the big decision to enter his 'young' team in F1. The McLaren team would make its debut at the 1966 Monaco GP. Despite the race ended with Bruce retiring with an engie failure, it didn't dishearten the team, on the contrary, it pushed them to do better, with determination and time, they'd get the results they were aiming for. With Kiwi Denny Hulme joining the team, the car still had a few reliability issues, infact the 1968 season didn't start in the best way, but on the 4th race, held at Spa-Francochamps, McLaren will score its first big victory: after a fierce battle with Pedro Rodriguez on the tricky Belgian circuit, it will be Bruce himself that'll claim his team's first victory. With this big achivement, the following season was even more promising: with Bruce never finishing lower than fifth and with only a retirment, he would end the season in third place in the championship standings; everything was finally working out. Yet the 1970 season was off a bad start: Bruce retired twice, but managed to finish 2nd at the Spanish GP, scoring what would be his last podium. Tragedy would later strike: in June, Bruce would lose his life, while testing his new Can-Am car.
The loss of Bruce motivated the team to continue, to not leave in vain what they've done and went through, because that's what Bruce would have wanted and what he involuntarely taught them, to never give up. With that spirit, McLaren went on, and started winning championships, becoming the second most successful team in Formula 1, only after Ferrari.
What is not often mentioned, is that Bruce showed to be a very versitile driver: one category that he dominated with ease was the Can-Am series in the mid/late 60s, in which he raced with his own cars that were often considered the best in the category, with their innovative, neat designs and incredible speed. Thanks to that, in '67 and '69 he became Can-Am champion.
Active member of the Ford programme, he soon became one of the top tester for Ford, thanks to his mechanical skills and incredible intuitivness. Always for Ford he would take part various times in the 24 hours of Le Mans, and would end up winning it in 1966, with fellow Kiwi and F1 driver, Chris Amon.
His first win in 1959, would grant him the title of youngest Grand Prix winner, a record that he would hold for over 40 years, it would later be broken by Fernando Alonso in 2003.
After Jack Brabham and Dan Gurney, Bruce is the third constructor-driver to have won a Grand Prix in his own car for his own team.
Bruce never lived the glamourous life of the stereotypical racing driver. He's often pictured with his face smeared with oil and dirt of the racetraks, always getting his hands dirty while working with his mechanics on the car. That's what striked people about Bruce, in a world of competition, he was humble, charismatic, humorous and painfully enthusiastic about everything. His warm and disarming smile never disappeared from his cherubic face; even when he would lose, he 'would limit himself to smile less'. 🧡

What Makes Taika Waititi Run and Run and Run?
The “Thor: Love and Thunder” director can’t say no — to starring in “Our Flag Means Death,” making a soccer movie, writing a “Star Wars” idea, adapting Roald Dahl. For starters.
Tumblr media
If he stepped back and considered all of his projects, “I’d probably have a panic attack,” Taika Waititi said. “I know there’s too many things.” Credit: Dana Scruggs for The New York Times
Even when your job is to dream up the interplanetary adventures of a Norse god, you might still want to run off and play pirates.
So during the weeks he was editing “Thor: Love and Thunder,” the Marvel movie that opens on July 8, Taika Waititi, its director and co-writer, would occasionally take weekends off for a different journey.
He would get outfitted in a flowing gray wig, matching facial hair and temporary tattoos, and don deliciously fetishistic leather gear to portray Blackbeard, the swashbuckling, loin-kindling buccaneer of the HBO Max comedy series “Our Flag Means Death.”
This is admittedly not a bad way to spend your spare time, though Waititi did occasionally fret over the trade-offs. As he explained recently, “Sometimes you’re pissed off at life and you’re like, ‘Why did I say yes to everything? I don’t have a social life — I’m just working.’ But then the thing comes out, you see where the hard work goes and it’s really worth it.”
On TV, Waititi, 46, has had a hand in the FX comedies “Reservation Dogs” (as a co-creator) and “What We Do in the Shadows” (a series based on a movie he co-wrote and co-directed), as well as a “Shadows” spinoff, “Wellington Paranormal.” At the movies, you can hear him voice a good guy in “Lightyear” or see him play a bad guy in “Free Guy.”
Waititi is also editing “Next Goal Wins,” a soccer comedy-drama that he co-wrote and directed for Searchlight. He’s writing a new “Star Wars” movie for Lucasfilm, a “Time Bandits” series for Apple TV+. He’s preparing two Roald Dahl projects for Netflix and adapting a graphic novel by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius for a feature film.
Tumblr media
“All my films are about underdogs,” Waititi said. “Not being able to choose your family and sometimes that’s not your blood family, it’s just who you end up gravitating towards.”
If that isn’t enough, consider that it’s taken this many paragraphs to acknowledge that in 2020 Waititi won an Academy Award for the adapted screenplay of his World War II comedy-drama “Jojo Rabbit,” in which he played — in his own words — “a lovable, quirky, whimsical Hitler.”
From this inventory alone (“not even mentioning the five other things that haven’t been reported on yet,” Waititi said), you can gauge how highly desired his services are. In just a few years, he has become one of the industry’s most ingenious and reliable purveyors of escapist fare while devising for himself some fulfilling escape routes from those escapes. And his filmmaking style is distinctive enough that it still shines through on monolithic and increasingly familiar Marvel movies.
But his runaway résumé is also a sign of how difficult Waititi finds it to say no. And if you wonder how anyone can possibly balance so many demanding projects, rest assured Waititi is asking himself these same questions.
“Sometimes I’ll wake up and be like, Am I having a midlife crisis?” he said. “Should I even be a filmmaker? Maybe I should have been a carpenter. Maybe I should just be a gardener.”
Waititi’s estimable career isn’t necessarily the one he imagined for himself while growing up in New Zealand — half a world away from Hollywood and wondering how to gain its attention. “It was never my dream to do this,” he explained. “I would much rather have been a fighter pilot or a fireman, but then it appeared that you’ve got to be actually quite smart to be a pilot.”
He added, more sincerely, that he didn’t start making films until his late 20s, at which point he’d already been a graphic artist, a musician and a comedian. “I don’t know if I’ve ever chased any of my dreams,” Waititi said. “My dreams have sort of developed through being part of the dream.”
Though he fell in love with film, he calls it “an arranged marriage.” And the solution he has found for managing his workload is, essentially, not to think too much about it and never to stand in one place for too long.
“Because if I was to step back and look at all of the things I’m doing, I’d probably have a panic attack,” he said. “I know there’s too many things. I know I’m doing a lot. I just have to keep pivoting every couple of hours.”
Earlier this month, Waititi kept stationary long enough to savor a plate of smoked trout and avocado toast in the lobby of a Midtown Manhattan hotel. Wearing loosefitting clothes in pastel colors and a neatly trimmed mustache, he carried himself like all of the Marx Brothers rolled into one: He could be suave, sheepish or scheming, and was always ready with a self-deprecating quip.
For example: “New Zealanders hate compliments,” Waititi said. “I think it’s because of our moms. Our moms are the ones who go, ‘Don’t worry — I still liked it.’ That’s the kind of support you’ll get.”

Waititi was not the most obvious candidate to join the Marvel roster when the studio began to consider him in 2015. At the time, his directorial efforts included intimate short films (including the Oscar-nominated “Two Cars, One Night”) and features like “Boy,” an affectionate, coming-of-age tribute to his upbringing in a rural Maori community, about a child enthralled by his charmingly reprobate father (played by Waititi, of course).
Before that, Waititi was a theater student at Victoria University of Wellington, where he befriended future collaborators like Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie (who would form the satirical rock duo Flight of the Conchords), obsessed over Monty Python and yearned for outlets for his wry comic voice.
“In those days, you’re like, I wish I had something to work on,” Waititi said. “I would just make lists of things I would like to do.”
But others from that era regarded Waititi as highly motivated and likely to fulfill his ambitions.
“I still see within Taika the same cheeky alternative comic from the 1990s,” said Rhys Darby, a longtime friend and a co-star on “Our Flag Means Death.”
“He found that creating behind the camera was more viable than being in front of it,” Darby explained. “But even when he directs, he’ll get in front of the camera and show the actors what he wants them to do. He gets them to mimic him. That’s why he always ends up in his own films. Because he’s trying to control everything.”
At Marvel, the studio knew it needed a comprehensive reinvention of “Thor.” That film’s sluggish 2013 sequel, “The Dark World,” remains no one’s favorite entry in the franchise.
“We were waning, as far as support for the character,” said Chris Hemsworth, who has played Thor since 2011. “I felt fatigued and there was an audience fatigue, too. If we didn’t do something different and change it up, I wasn’t convinced we were going to bring back an audience.”
The comic-book literate Waititi was no fan of the annoyingly flawless Thor, whom he described as “a rich kid from outer space who’s trapped in the ghetto.” But as he reflected further, Waititi wanted to understand his own resistance to the hero and see if he could make a movie that acknowledged and embraced those traits.
Moreover, Waititi wanted to know if he could handle making movies at a mammoth scale. Addressing himself, he said, “You’ve always been scared of working with studios, worried about working in America and what it might do to you. But why not go straight into the deep end and see how that goes?”
The result was the wildly successful “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017), in which the Viking deity is stripped of his magical hammer and shorn of his flowing locks but overcomes his villainous sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett), and the flamboyant Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why do so many in Hollywood try to hire Waititi? “He gives you his cachet, and he puts himself 100 percent behind your ideas,” said David Jenkins, creator of “Our Flag Means Death.”
Directed by Waititi (from a screenplay credited to Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle and Christopher L. Yost), “Ragnarok” featured plenty of his personal flair — like two different battle sequences set to Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” — while allowing him to play the soft-spoken stone warrior Korg. (It was well-reviewed and sold more than $853 million in tickets worldwide, outstripping its predecessors.)
Almost immediately, Waititi and Marvel began devising a follow-up, but getting him back in the director’s chair was not so simple. Within weeks of his Oscar victory, the pandemic hit.
“Painting, learning a language, exercising — you think I did any of them?” he said. “No, I didn’t. What I wanted to do was sleep for a month and then I got to sleep for six months.”
Then he launched into projects he had been neglecting. By this point, Marvel had become accustomed to sharing Waititi.
As Kevin Feige, the studio’s president, explained, “On ‘Ragnarok,’ it was, ‘I’m just finishing this little thing.’” That turned out to be Waititi’s 2016 comedy-drama “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” “While we were writing and developing this movie, it was, ‘I’m just going to do this other thing in Manhattan Beach.’” That was Waititi’s work on the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian,” for which he directed an episode and voiced the robot bounty hunter IG-11. “‘I’m just going to Hawaii for a few weeks.’ Oh, I guess family vacation?” Feige recalled. Actually, he was filming “Next Goal Wins.”
Even after the “Thor: Love and Thunder” shoot ended in Australia last summer and postproduction began in Los Angeles, Feige said, “we were always on alert for Taika being spread too thin. We were very ready to be like, We’re in the cutting room, it’s 8 p.m., where is he? But he was always sitting right next to us.”
Hemsworth said that Waititi’s numerous extracurricular activities are not diversions, but intellectual necessities. “If he isn’t continually creating, he would become stagnant,” Hemsworth said. “Most of us would fall flat on our asses from exhaustion. That’s what fuels him, in a strange way.”
Waititi’s to-do list included “Our Flag Means Death,” whose creator, David Jenkins, spent three years wooing Waititi — first to serve as an executive producer and director of the pilot, and then to play Blackbeard.
“It’s like writing a song for Prince,” said Jenkins, who got Disney and Marvel’s permission to borrow Waititi on weekends. “He gives you his cachet, and he puts himself 100 percent behind your ideas.”
Tumblr media
“I would much rather have been a fighter pilot or a fireman, but then it appeared that you’ve got to be actually quite smart to be a pilot,” Waititi said.
Waititi said he did not need much persuading to play Blackbeard once Jenkins suggested he was right for the part. “This is what I needed to hear,” Waititi said. “My ego loves that.”
But “Our Flag Means Death” offered Waititi more than just a morale boost. (Here there be spoilers, me hearties.) While the series told the comic tale of Stede Bonnet (Darby), a befuddled but well-meaning aristocrat trying to make it as a pirate, it did not simply dangle Blackbeard as an unlikely mentor to Bonnet and a source of will-they-or-won’t-they, bro-ho-ho innuendo.
In the first season’s penultimate episode, Bonnet and Blackbeard realized they loved each other and shared a tender kiss. Their romance has become integral to the series going forward, and the inspiration for countless works of fan art that Waititi keeps saved on his phone.
As much as he understands the cultural fascination with Stede and Blackbeard’s kiss, Waititi said he wished it wasn’t remarkable for its rarity: “It needs to be normalized.”
It is a wish that Waititi understands he cannot necessarily fulfill in a Marvel movie, despite some of the wink-wink repartee shared by Thor and his hunky ally Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) in a “Love and Thunder” teaser trailer.
“No one talks about Tom Cruise hooking up with Jennifer Connelly in ‘Top Gun,’” he said. But in “Our Flag Means Death, “it’s a massive talking point that two dudes kiss on the beach. I’m cool with talking about it because I’m really proud of the moment. But my dream is to be like the world of the pirates, where no one bats an eye.”
The new “Thor” is partly concerned with expanding the Marvel empire to include Russell Crowe as the vainglorious Greek god Zeus and Christian Bale as the nefarious Gorr the God Butcher. But as the title implies, the movie is also a romance, one that continues Thor’s journey from “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).
Looking at the character there, Waititi said he asked himself, “What is he missing most in his life?” And the answer: “It was love. It was a partner. For people who are larger than life, what completes them? I think a lot of superheroes, when you look at them, they’re just lonely.”
The story line provided the opportunity to bring back Natalie Portman, who played Thor’s love interest Jane Foster in the first two films but did not appear in “Ragnarok.”
Portman, who gets to wield Thor’s mighty hammer in the new film, said that she had seen “Ragnarok” and was excited that Waititi’s style was “so free and creative.”
“His other work, too, has impressed me so much over the years and how he’s able to blend the silly and the profound, all with a distinctive visual style,” Portman said. “Everything in his films always feels spontaneous and hilarious and full of heart.”
The idea of yearning for companionship is particularly prevalent in this “Thor,” and one could speculate about why it appeals so strongly to Waititi. His parents separated when he was young, and he is divorced from the film producer Chelsea Winstanley, with whom he has two daughters.
But as we talked about the strands that tie his work together, Waititi preferred to point to broader themes.
“All my films are about underdogs,” he said. “Not being able to choose your family and sometimes that’s not your blood family, it’s just who you end up gravitating towards. You’re like, How did I end up with these weirdos? What is it about these guys?”
Tumblr media
Waititi didn’t start making films until his late 20s. “Before that,” he said, “I don’t know if I’ve ever chased any of my dreams.”
Without quite naming himself, Waititi spun an extemporaneous monologue about why certain people — whoever they might be — can never see themselves as being successful or having made it.
“What drives people is this idea of, I’ll show you,” he said. “Sometimes it’s an ill-perceived, false idea that people don’t believe in you. You still carry that around and people will be like, ‘You can stop now — you’ve proven your point.’”
His voice rose to a comic volume as he continued: “No, there’s still some dead people I need to show! My dead dad, he needs to see!” Then in a softer, more sincere tone he added, “It’s a weird infatuation.”
Once this “Thor” has been safely launched into the world, more work awaits Waititi. “I’m trying to write the ‘Star Wars’ idea at the moment,” he said. “I’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.”
But then again, “I am cool as well to take six months off and just go hang out with my kids.”
I asked him if he was starting to feel like Leonardo DiCaprio in “Inception,” just desperate to walk through the front door and have his children embrace him, and Waititi did not dismiss the comparison. “They’re in New Zealand,” he said. “I mean, they couldn’t be further away.”
For now, Waititi takes solace in the fact that he tried to have his daughters on the set of “Thor” as much as possible and provided them with experiences that would someday be meaningful to them.
“I know in the future, they’ll look back and go, ‘Wow, we were on set with Christian Bale,’” he said. “‘And we were rude to him and ignored him.’”

Raisins Market - Forecast (2022-2027)
Raisins Market Size is estimated to reach $3.1 billion by 2027 and is poised to grow at a CAGR of 5.7% over the forecast period of 2022-2027. Raisins are commercially made by drying the harvested grape in various places. Raisins can be consumed in their raw form, cooked, baked or brewed forms. The USDA National Nutrient Database states that raisins are a good source of protein, dietary fiber and carbs. They are incredibly useful for treating hypertension and relieving constipation. One of the main factors propelling the growth of the raisins market is the rising usage of raisins in cooking, including sweet and dessert meals, brewing and a range of other uses. Raisins are also gaining popularity as a result of their health benefits as a potent source of antioxidants, potassium and magnesium riboflavin, dietary fiber, linoleic acid and oleanolic acid. Raisins are also employed in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry owing to their malic acid content which exfoliates the skin. To meet the growing demand for raisins and their wide application various research institutes focus on developing new varieties of grapes. For instance, in March 2022, Cornell AgriTech and Sun World International collaboratively developed Sugrafiftytwo, an ultra-early ripening green seedless grape variety and Sugrasixty, a midseason ripening red variety with large berries and a tropical aroma. Such innovations and increasing demand for raisins in the market drive growth of the Raisins Industry over the forecast period 2022-2027.
