Research alert! New insights into mammalian tooth, jaw, and ear evolution, gleaned from analyzing fossils of two Jurassic-era mammal species from China, are reshaping how scientists think about early mammals. This research, led by scientists at the Museum and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, focuses on two new species of fossil mammals—Feredocodon chowi and Dianoconodon youngi—that offer new evidence about early mammalian evolution.
“Scientists have been trying to understand how the mammalian middle ear evolved since Darwin’s time,” said Jin Meng, a curator in the Museum’s Division of Paleontology and a corresponding author on both papers. “These new fossils bring to light a critical missing link and enrich our understanding of the gradual evolution of the mammalian middle ear.”

Some of you might know that I am currently working on a research and I can finally share the results.
My research showed that in cases between 2013-2021 the chances of getting compensation as a victim of human trafficking were higher if you were female or if someone abused your vulnerable position or if your cases came before a court in the randstad (metropolis/busiest few provinces in the Netherlands). And the only factor that had a significant impact on getting the highest proportion of your asked compansation as compensation, was having an immigration background. So, you had to be come from outside of the Netherlands itself.
So, human trafficking victims get the most compensation in the stereotypical cases. Which might be due to a high amount of court cases being about sexual exploitation, especially since around 3/4 of the court cases had female victims. But it could also be thanks to the idea that women are more deserving of compensation if we look at the ideal bictim theory from Christie.
I can't wait to share more insights, but for now I am still working on my discussion, so that is all.

Excerpt from this story from Smithsonian:
Over millennia, penguins have evolved from their flying ancestors into the strong swimmers and divers we know and love today. In a study published yesterday in the journal Nature Communications, researchers used evidence from both penguin genomes and the fossil record to map the historical evolution of penguins and identify which genes spurred the development of particular traits.
The research suggests that the tuxedo-wearing waddlers might struggle to adapt to and survive the planet’s current rate of global warming. “The current speed of rising temperature far exceeds the adaptive capabilities of penguins,” Sankar Subramanian, a geneticist at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia who wasn’t involved in the study, tells the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Anna Salleh. “I think this is the important message from this paper.”
The study is the first to combine genomes of all living and recently extinct penguin lineages with the complete fossil record, writes Rebecca Dzombak for National Geographic. The fossil evidence is important since about three-quarters of penguin species are extinct. “You have to look at the fossil record, or you’re only getting a fragment of the story,” study co-author Daniel Ksepka, a paleontologist at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, told the New York Times’ Jack Tamisiea.
The researchers were able to pinpoint which genes helped penguins adapt to swimming underwater and living in cold climates. The University of Copenhagen’s Theresa Cole, a lead author of the study, tells the ABC that she and her colleagues found genes that led to the formation of flippers by making shorter, denser and more rigid forearm bones. The denser bones also help penguins to dive deep underwater.
According to the New York Times, the researchers also determined which genes tuned penguins’ vision to the blue depths of the ocean by hindering their perception of red and green colors. Penguins also have genes for white fat, a crucial insulator and energy source not found in other birds that aids in migrating and surviving cold temperatures, per the ABC.
“This is an impressive approach to understanding penguin evolution,” Nic Rawlence, a paleogeneticist at New Zealand’s University of Otago who was not involved in the study, told National Geographic.

Research alert! A team of international scientists has discovered the largest known freshwater dolphin, an ancient species that lived in the Peruvian Amazon some 16.5 million years ago. Pebanista yacuruna, which likely measured 10-11.5-feet (3-3.5 meters) long, inhabited what is now the Amazon River basin before this system had its major connection to the Atlantic Ocean.
“Discoveries by our international collaborative teams tell us the kinds of tropical life that existed during times in Earth’s history when virtually nothing had been known before,” said John Flynn, the Museum’s Frick Curator of Fossil Mammals and a co-author on the new study, which was published in the journal Science Advances. “This is crucial to understanding the history and pathways that led to the remarkably rich modern Amazonian biodiversity.”
Learn more about this animal, and its surprising modern relatives, in our latest blog post.

To quote this article published January of this year:
Results: Over the 15-year follow-up period, a total of 132 participants developed either acute stress disorder or PTSD. Among them, 105 cases (0.691% or 64.90 per 100,000 person-years) were in the ASD group, while 27 cases (0.059% or 5.38 per 100,000 person-years) were in the control group. The adjusted hazard ratio for the ASD group was significantly higher compared to the control group (25.661 with 95% CI = 15.913-41.232; P < .001).

Horrible fact of the day: Chevron just released a new boat fuel that WILL give you cancer.
Not "might", not "could", WILL. It has a cancer ratio of 1.3:1, as in, in a group of 10 people, 10 would contract CANCER.
(Edit: apparently some articles are now saying 1.4:1, and some are saying a little under that. Either way, the consensus seems to be anywhere between a 95-100+% of contracting cancer, with some expectations of this fuel not even needing a full lifetime of exposure for you to get Cancer.)
The EPA's safety limit is 1:1,000,000 as in 1 in a million people get cancer.
The EPA approved it anyways. I am not joking. The EPA approved a boat fuel that has a near 100% chance of giving someone cancer. It has such a good chance of giving someone cancer that if you DIDN'T get cancer YOU WOULD BE AN OUTLIER.
Fuck the oil industries.
Edit: If you find this (rightfully) horrifying, have you considered industrial sabotage? /hj
This isn't something we can vote away. This isn't something the rich are gonna apologize and make a 10 minute apology video for this. They don't care if you starve or wither in hospitals or get blown up in their wars.
If you don't know where to get started:
If you already know what to do, then it's time to do it. Participate in mutual aid, raise awareness in real life as well as online, participate in or train in self defense and emergency medical training classes.

Vegans are gonna have a field day with this one aren't they
Jokes aside, if I'm understanding correctly, the author is simply saying when bees cluster in cold weather, they're suffering, and it's a pain response, so inducing clustering is unethical treatment and cruel towards bees.
tldr: keep ur bees warm
