Dr. Nerd Pacheco and Dr. Haruta Byrd study necromancy. A deal is struck with Famous Owens. (Nerd's not-boyfriend, Hades Tiger, and a little more desperate than Nerd realized.)

- a short moment between nerd and famous, just before one of the many necromancies of season twenty three.

I blame stara (@thehallstara) because we both accidentally brainrotted ourself into this.

Quick bg: nerd pacheco (they/them) is an academic who got Shelled and rolled into Hades for a season before being swapped to the Pies. Famous Owens (they/them) is a face stealing mask wearing demon who's been a tiger for a long long time and despite their evasive masks, once made the mistake of confiding in a giant peanut shell. Now they joyride across town because Nerd got superpeanutted and famous has so many problems.

It's not exactly a secret, what Nerd is doing. What they, Haruta and a constellation of players were doing across the league. Debt dissuaded few people.

Famous doesn't talk about debt or that Tuesday at all- Tigers rarely did now, after 3 debts, a fistful of decades, and an immunity that most tried not to hold a grudge over later.

Maybe Nerd should have asked earlier, before they ask for a favor over a glass of wine. A small one really. Just access to one of the more reliable necronomicons hidden in one of Hades' locked doors. Nerd had prepared for it, for an easy yes, for a no, for a list of things Nerd could give for the demon's help. 

"That's all, darling? Nerd, darling, you know I'm capable of so much more," Famous says, flashing them a grin. They let go of their drink, leaning in. "Anything at all really," they drawl out, leaning in. Nerd swallows- Famous' gaze was magnetic, even from behind their mask, and there was the ever familiar honey drawl that Nerd had liked, but the grin is predator sharp and there are alarm bells ringing in the back of their head. Famous' fingers dance along Nerd's arm- a familiar habit when Famous was feeling playful, like a tiger before a kill. 

And yet Nerd is tempted. Whatever Famous is thinking, it's not a no. And Nerd thinks, though maybe they wouldn't mention this part to Haruta, that their hot not-partner was terribly appealing when they slipped and showed the edge under that razor grin. And there was an edge, no doubt, even if they wielded it without discrimination, one Nerd wishes they knew how to posses. Even with Dr. Grackle's help, the two of them were railroaded and turned around at every step. If Famous was known for anything, it was for getting what they wanted. And Nerd thinks they know Famous maybe a little better on average, but maybe not well enough to know what Famous would ask for. 

"I, ah, I didn't realize you were so interested in necromancy- ah, no?" Nerd winces at the look Famous shoots him. 

"No, I don't care about your nerd shit," 

"It is not-"

 "Your stupid, ridiculous nerd shit that will probably get people killed again, darling, but I would never be one to judge a little murder." 

Nerd opens their mouth- debt was wholly possible to avoid and perhaps within reach, and there were studies and papers- and the words die in their mouth, because the look Famous sends them is the most honest they've ever been. Famous pats their hand. "Yes I'm sure you're very smart, the same way I'm sure the Garages and Nagomi thought themselves very clever. I don't really give a fuck, darling. But it'd be just lovely if you succeed and I want you to do so in Philly."

"Ah, so you've heard about Flattery and Nanci's plan then." Nerd says. Famous laughs, tinkling like shattering glass. "Hiroto will work herself into a fit if you ask her about it. I'm fairly certain that's why the Georgias won't talk to her about it even if all of Wild High has heard of it."

"So is that it then? You'll help as long as we do it in Philly?" Nerd asks. "In Philly, keep that information between you and Haruta, don't even tell them I'm helping you, Wilcox will scream my ear off if she hears," Famous corrects Nerd, rolling their eyes. Going through the motions, Nerd can't help but feel. Nerd covers the hand resting over their furred arm, moving it between their hands. Their hands were always chilly but they slowly start to warm between Nerd's hands. Famous seems to sigh, deflating and losing the sudden tension. 

There's none of the spark in Famous' eyes right now, no playfulness. "I'll help however you need, just make sure you beat those two to it. I never bet on losing horses, darling, so I'd like you to swear that you and Haruta will do your best to ensure Wild High doesn't see debt again."

 They hold out their other pinkie finger, wiggling it playfully. Haruta might not be pleased with them. But they can figure out how to explain it later- all the pies Famous had their finger in, the earnestness of Famous' request even if no one would believe it. Nerd hooks their fingers together, nodding. "Alright then, sounds like a deal."

supermassive hyperactive supernova casanova, lars taylor’s high-speed self-led whirlwind romantic tour of greater boston, with nerd pacheco in tow. the season 10 spillover gives them a free day, during which they embark on a ferris-bueller’s-day-off trip of mayhem around the city, to the mild irritation and/or amusement of the locals. they ride a horse through a parade. why is there a horse? only lars knows and they wont tell you

“I want to jump in the pool,” Lars signed.

“There’s no pool, dear.”

Lars pointed.

“That’s not a pool, that’s a part of the… atmosphere for the mini golf course. There’s a sign.”

“I’m going to jump in it.”

“It says ‘no swimming.’ On the sign. I’m fairly certain—”

Lars jumped in the pool. It was fun. The water hissed and bubbled; shoot, they hadn’t closed their eye. Hopefully there weren’t any fish getting boiled.

He kicked with immaterial flippers and broke the surface. A family of four had stopped partway through the fourth hole. The younger daughter’s ball slowly rolled down the slope. A few employees were emerging from the club rental shack.

Star looked up. The course was pirate-themed. Incredible. There was a half-sunken pirate ship just sitting there in the pool. Sure, it wasn’t a cowboy-themed mini golf course, but Lars liked that life on this funny little rock was full of little imperfections. They waved for Nerd to jump in.

“Dear, I can’t.”

It took some coaxing. Lars had climbed up to the crow’s nest by the time Nerd finally gave in. They had to fold up their glasses and take their wallet out of their pocket and do something on their phone and remove their shoes and a whole long list of other adorable preparations, but star was rewarded for stars patience by the wonderful sight of Nerd Pacheco chewing their lip and diving into the pool.

There was a waterfall that overlooked the eighteenth hole. Lars couldn’t wait to bring Nerd up there.

okay this got. far too long by accident (apparently i had more thoughts than i thought) so it's going under a cut oops!!!! apologies for how all over the place it is

gonna start off with just saying my version of nerd diverges a bit from pretty much all the other versions out there– while it riffs on the wiki version for a lot of it over the past 6 months they've really become my own thing 😆

starting off with disability moments bc i think about it a lot!!! has eds imo, and gets hit with cfs/me post superallergic because like. yeah lets be real it's right there

unlike declan, uses their wheelchair both on and off the field!! will also sometimes use forearm crutches depending on the day but overall pretty frequently uses mobility aids imo

i forget how common this is but. grew up in utah closer to salt lake city. has complicated feelings about it. has complicated feelings about moab too.

is living in dec and ruthless's old apartment– ruthless offered it to them when they fell

black and ashkenazi, not particularly observant but grew up with judaism in like. the background if that makes any sense??

had a somewhat complicated relationship with hurley before their death– i think the two of them are just far apart enough in age that they weren't like. super super close but did love each other and they did take it hard when they died

is unfortunately in love with famous owens and questions every choice they've made in their life that's brought them to this point weekly

(but also. is blown away at the way they've learned to be vulnerable with each other, the way they fit into their side and their apartment and their life like it was inevitable and maybe it was)

we keep referring to frankie, nerd and torus as the blunt rotation because they're all stacked together in the midfield and while i don't think that's literal i do think the three of them have gotten quite close at this point

also has another trio going with yosh and parra (and sometimes rosales. it depends). guys who have been here too long

stats wise absolutely refuses to field double plays despite being our best defender??? assigned conservation of energy by the sim i literally think about it too fucking much

people from their old teams they're still talking to: hank. zack. malik. haruta but it's complicated. tiana. jeff de la cruz but it's also complicated.

helped with urban planning after they fell to help rebuild a post-great fire chicago!! still is with a lesser extent but is also on like. three different municipal committees atm! does not actual firefight– this is the way they've responded to the call.

1: a fic that makes me cry now i need you to know. that despite crying super easily if literally anything happens to me. it is actually quite hard for a fic to make me cry. however. the two fics that have come the closest are one that i'm gonna recommend in a different answer, and cards fall where they may, by @thehallstara, specifically the morrow section. it's a beautifully made twine fic, technically three fics in one, and it. i. sitting on the ground head in my hands even THINKING about this again. waugh

21: a fic about a little-known player

players that are made up count for this right? yeah i think so. you should read the salt like NOW its about a moist talkers short circuit that never happened but honestly even if you ARENT a blaseball fan you should read this. its my favorite sci-fi anthology of all time maybe. salt saturday sthursday

26: my favorite fic about the black hole

first of all you should really read basically everything in the lift fic exchange. i haven't finished all of it yet but i've read a lot of it and it's incredible. and most relevant to this question is a matter of time, about nerd pacheco interviewing val hitherto about time in the black hole!!!!! i have already completely adopted this interpretation of the black hole as my own, and as a bonus i got to find out about a new ship!!!! everyone loves a scientist and his very strange and unscientific boyfriend right (i am a known night vale liker)
