Athlete Jim Thorpe in 1910, Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, NARA ID 595347.
#OTD 1912: Jim Thorpe begins the Olympic triathlon By Miriam Kleiman, Public Affairs
Tumblr media
Jim Thorpe wearing Carlisle Indian School Football uniform, 1909. NARA ID 519348.
Jim Thorpe, a member of the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma, competed in track and field events at Carlisle Indian Industrial School and later played football, baseball, and basketball professionally. He won gold medals for the decathlon and pentathlon in the 1912 Olympics. Olympic officials later stripped him of his medals because a brief stint playing minor league baseball violated the rules of amateurism. To avoid penalties, some Olympic athletes played professionally under assumed names. Thorpe, who was unaware of the rule, was severely punished for the infraction.
Thorpe faced extensive racism on and off the field. Reporters depicted his competitions as battles between Indigenous and White Americans. But his excellence in so many different sports—he went on to play professional football, baseball, and basketball—led many to believe he was the greatest athlete of all time.
Many urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to restore Thorpe’s medals. The IOC relented in 1982, 30 years after his death, gave Thorpe’s family replica gold medals, and said he would be "added to the list of athletes who were crowned Olympic champions at the 1912 Games.” However, the IOC refused to alter the official record.
Learn more about Thorpe and see these replica gold medals* in our upcoming exhibit, All American, the Power of Sports.

Hear me out not all natives wanna be super spiritual and see weird/scary sh✨t!
Doesn't mean they aren't native!
They're still native!
They just have boundaries!
I have a friend who is native and she lives with her tribe so people think instantly she's super spiritual and a seer.
We are best buds so when acquaintances hear one of us likes the spiritual, working with spirits, trying to see stuff they instantly assume her simply on the grounds of she's native.
She'll tell you no, she'll tell you she's a chicken sh🎀t that has no intention on seeing or being apart of any of that cause she scares VERY easy, has anxiety and the few times she has seen something she had panic attacks. She is content and happy in her life of "nope" and " I didn't see sh🌼t " when creepy stuff goes down.
How people treat her AFTER is what bothers me......
They treat her like she's somehow abandoned or betrayed her culture?? Like she's somehow less native and in a way less interesting??? That's the way they act and it's so, I'm not sure if there's a word for it but it feels like they're angry their fantasy is destroyed???
It's like their illusion of native people all being like Hollywood or media style seers, healers and spirit workers is destroyed and that get miffed at her for it.
She's still native and not wanting to see stuff doesn't make her any less native.
Let her and others that don't wanna see stuff enjoy their non-spooky existence in peace.
Also really tired of people saying
" must be the native in you " when they learn I or anyone with native blood is spiritual.. Like no, it's the crushing fear of mortality and there being nothing at the end of the road for me. It has nothing to do with any native blood I have in me.
It's a really common phase and I'm not a fan, just feels weird, ya know?

"Straight Pride"?!? HAHAHAHA, no.
You don't get straight pride because you don't need straight pride.
When you whine about "straight pride", you make common cause with bigots who openly declare that nearly 2.5 billion people in the world should not be allowed to exist. almost 45.5 milllion in the US alone. (Hi, that's more than the populations of NYC, Los Angeles, and Chicago combined.)
So until
- state governors & legislators pass laws that make it a crime for you, a straight person, to use the public toilet that matches your gender identity
- they pass laws that define existing as a straight person in front of your own children, or *allowing* them be straight, as child abuse
- you can be fired/not hired, evicted, barred from the military, banned from restaurants/businesses, or denied medical solely because an individual with power over you believes that straight people should not be allowed to exist
- the highest court in the land openly declares its intention to dissolve straight marriage rights
- existing as a straight person in the presence of a child is defined as a GODDAMN SEX CRIME
Until every one of those things plus an endless list more is true of you like it is true of us, you. do. not. get. to. have. straight. pride.
PRIDE is not pride in merely *being* queer, but in surviving as a queer person in a world that is actively trying to kill us, or at least criminalize us back into silence and fear, and we. will. not. go. We fight a daily war for survival and just being here is an accomplishment. PRIDE is celebrating that we've made it to today when so many of our kin have fallen.
PRIDE says here I am. Out in the open, broad daylight, your monster, your demon, your nightmare. I will no longer internalize your fear and hatred. I hold no weapon, I offer you no threat, I only want to live as freely as you do. But I will not lay down quietly and die. I will not go back into the dark unresisting. If you succeed in killing me, it will only be after I have screamed my right to exist to the heavens and clawed the evidence of my murder into your soul.
So do your worst, and die mad about it. ************************************************************************ ************************************************************************ ************************************************************************ ************************************************************************ I am team rainbow capitalism because it means the bigots have been weighed, measured, and found to represent an insufficient market share. HOWEVER, it's better to directly support actual queer folx if you can. To that end, if you are a queer creator in my circle, please drop your pages, shops, subscriptions, channels, reparations & community aid spots, etc in the comments. My life truly changed when I accepted that not every action needs a reaction. I've spent majority of my life reacting to low vibrational people that were only trying to get a reaction out of me. Reactions = ur pure energy and time.

I hate people that use native existence as a brownie point woke thing..
So many " woke people" love pulling the
" What are you doing for the native people and stolen land???? "
At pagans, witches and mixed race natives just as a way of shutting them up or shaming them.
But if you ask them that same question suddenly they get so angry and refuse to answer the very question that they asked..... Golly gee almost seems like they don't actually care for natives and just like looking like they care and looking like they're "woke"
