Dialogue Prompts
Alright, you guys. Here is part 6 of the prompts! No specific category for this one, though, but it is kinda long. So, enjoy! :)
Tumblr media
"Let me do it this time." "Absolutely not." "You got to do the illegal stuff last time, why can't I do it this time?!"
"Shit. I got shot." "Good thing my dress matches my blood. It can blend in easier."
"There's a pair of tweezers in the bag there."
"I'm going to call it now."
"What's wrong with my outfit?"
"I'm sorry, I thought the whole point of being here was to not draw attention to ourselves?!"
"I haven't told them about the transfer yet..."
"Don't be rude. We'd love to come over."
"Well, whatever you do, don't rule that option out completely."
"I didn't know you could pull off moves like that."
"Um, that's the point. Gotta blend in."
"Yea, for my sake, don't tell anyone."
"I'm pissed okay?! That was a totally bust job, we got nothing accomplished!"
"Is that what you think of me?"
"Good! We never wanted you on our team anyway! You've been slowing us down, since day freaking one!"
"Guys, can we not fight?"
"Fine, then. Give me the keys." "I still think we should talk about this more-" "Keys. NOW!"
"Great. Now you've pissed her off!"
"I'm sorry, alright. You were right. I was out of line."
"You have my permission. Sign then."
"I thought this was what you wanted?"
"Take a deep breath. On the count of three."
"The stitches came out."
"Oh, come on. Don't be like that." "Don't be like what?" "You know what I mean." "Well, clearly, I don't."
"Since when did you know how to do this?"
"Do you really want to cause a scene right now?" "Yes, I want to cause a scene right now! How about this, you are so stubborn and so annoying!"
"You are both under arrest."
"She does have a point." "Who's side are you on?"
"Let. Go. Of. Me."
"No, I don't want to hear it. We told you this would happen didn't we? And you, didn't listen!"
"Yea, can we not go to prison? That would be great."
"Tell him I said hi."
"I don't like this anymore than you do."
"We have no other choice."
"So, who's fault is that? Because I'm not cleaning this mess up."
"You said this about her? No wonder she wants to transfer."
"I don't think this is a good idea."
"They'd look so cute together.... We should set them up."
"You really think that he kept the letters after all this time?"
"Long time no see!"
"Can you watch him for a second? I'll be back."
"I'm honestly surprised that you didn't know that fact."
"Noice. Let's go." *fist bump*
"We should wear a type of disguise. So, we don't get caught."
"Turn it around... be careful."
"We're so close, I can feel it."
"So, the best option is to split up. You. You're coming with me."
"Yes, that would be a big problem if that happened."
"They've found the car."
"My drill broke!"
"Take the frame, we're going to have to take it apart in the elevator."
"You're not the only one."
"I hate him with every fiber of my being."
"This is between the three of us. Nobody needs to get hurt here."
"I don't think you understand the situation here. I'm holding all the cards and yet, you're trying to negotiate with me."
"You can have all the treasure, just let us go!"
"Mmm... I don't think I will. See, you have another clue."
"I don't... I'm out."
"Let's give it some finishing touches."
"We have to go inside."
"I don't think that we have to go somewhere else, I think it's still here."
"But where?"
"Give a little warning next time, before you do that."
"All tunnels have to end, eventually."
"I'm sorry I snapped at you."
"What's happening here? You gave them a fake clue." "We had to buy ourselves sometime."
"It's not what I thought it would be."
"Please, don't break. Please don't break!"
"Um... because you're the bad guy?"
"I've found door number three.... And I'm gonna take it."
"I'm not doing anything else for you unless you answer my questions."
"But it gives me more time to spend with you!"
"Did you guys not read my book?" "I have! I've read it! More than twice!" *whispers* "I think I'm your biggest fan, babe." "Not gonna lie, you definitely are."
"I'm going to run this red light!"
"Watch the people!" "I don't think we're supposed to be going down this way."
"He's right behind me! Where else do you want me to go?!"
"They're right on their way, right now, and I'd guarantee they'd love to meet you too."
"That was hot." "Aw, thanks, babe."
"Fine. But your henchmen stay behind. It's just you." "What makes you think that I'm gonna agree to those terms?"
"Go! I'll meet you at the car." "How do they expect to meet us there?!"
"It's going to take forever to dig these rocks out of the way."
"DON'T LET GO OF MY HAND!"
"You demolished my family name for this?"
"Alright. That's it! I'm going to deck the living shit out of you!"
"It comes in a series."
"Didn't... didn't they get married?"
"I'll stay! I'll stay behind, look! I'm staying."
"So, you won't tell me the way out, unless I give you what you want?" "The way out is through that tunnel there." "Why are you doing this?"
"I can't help you, unless you find what you're looking for." "I won't let you down, sir."
"I'm telling you exactly what it says."
"Alright, you're the only one who knows. Indulge us. What's the next clue?" "You think I'm gonna give that up so easily?"
"Yes, thank you, for clearing that up."
"The wall closed behind us and trapped us in." *touching the wall* "There has to be a way out!"
"I'm in. If you are, that is."
"No hesitation, okay?" "Right. It'll run the whole plan."
"How exactly do you expect us to pull this off?"
"There's only one way now: forward."

Best Martial Arts Movies on Amazon Prime Right Now
https://ift.tt/3iGgPxj
Search ‘Martial Arts Movies’ on Amazon Prime and you’ll get over a thousand results ranging from the classics to the campy, to the critically acclaimed. It’s an overwhelming library for the uninitiated and the mother lode for stalwart fans of the genre. There are so many gems buried in Amazon Prime that digging out the favorites is dirty challenging work but extremely rewarding.
When it comes to martial arts, Amazon Prime has a killer Kung Fu collection. The ‘80s were the ‘Golden Era’ of Kung Fu films when Hong Kong film studios cranked out films faster than any grindhouse ever. Many Hong Kong filmmakers put out up to half a dozen films a year, and most have hundreds of credits on IMDb. This glut of Kung Fu films spread to every Chinatown ghetto theater on the planet. And like with horror, American networks broadcasted late night Kung Fu Theater shows because there was so much cheap content available.
Consequently, Amazon Prime’s Kung Fu film selection leans heavily that way, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t include some non-Chinese favorites too. Martial Arts movies cross over to all other genres and nations. There are comedies, romances, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and art house films. From countless cheesy low-budget exploitations, many so funky that they’re totally awesome, to the brilliant ground-breaking works that are staggeringly sensational, here’s some classic jewels and hidden treasures currently included with Amazon Prime membership.
Fist of Fury (1972)
Despite his fame, Bruce Lee only lived to see three of his martial arts movies premiere because Enter the Dragon and Game of Death were released posthumously. His impersonators are innumerable, so many that Bruceploitation is its own genre.
But Fist of Fury is the real Bruce in all his nunchuck spinning glory. It’s loosely based on the history of the Chin Woo Athletic Association, which remains one of the largest international martial arts organizations to this day. When Bruce shattered the ‘No Dogs and Chinese Allowed’ sign with a soaring flying kick, it became a battle cry for the racially oppressed worldwide, firmly cementing Bruce as the world’s first Asian global superstar.
Come Drink with Me (1966)
Long before Charlize Theron went Atomic Blonde, Cheng Pei Pei blazed a path as Golden Swallow, the mysterious invincible swordswoman, and all female action heroines are in her wake. Fiercely independent and savagely lethal, Cheng delivers several sophisticated long-take fight scenes, the hallmark of real Kung Fu skill, with the poise and precision built upon her foundation in ballet. Cheng is remembered in Hollywood as Jade Fox from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and played the matchmaker in Disney’s live-action Mulan. Note that Amazon Prime also has the sequel, Golden Swallow, but it’s not nearly as good.
Once Upon a Time in China (1991)
This tour de force from director Tsui Hark and Jet Li launched a six-film franchise and a TV series. Jet plays Wong Fei-hung, a real-life folk hero and Kung Fu master who has been depicted in well over a hundred films and TV shows. Set during the late 19th century, the film examines themes of Western colonization and Chinese cults, and while blatantly nationalistic, it captures Jet in his martial prime and contains some of his finest fights.

Amazon Prime also has Once Upon a Time in China II, which is an excellent sequel, however the third installment (not on Amazon Prime) falls apart, allegedly due to disputes between Jet and Hark.
Ashes of Time Redux (2008)
This was internationally acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai’s first stab at the martial arts genre. It’s sumptuously artsy and laboriously dystopic, not one to see for the action but the art. Based on a classic wuxia (wuxia is Chinese for martial arts genre books and film) titled The Eagle Shooting Heroes, Wong simultaneously filmed a parody titled after the book with the same cast. Wong did the Redux after the original print was lost, salvaging what was left, reediting and re-scoring it.
(Prime US only)
The Assassin (2015)
Director Hou Hsiao-hsien won Best Director at Cannes for this magnificent epic, which was also submitted as Taiwan’s Foreign Language entry at the Academy Awards. Starring the ever-glamorous Shu Qi, who made an early Hollywood crossover attempt with The Transporter, The Assassin is based on another wuxia tale that’s parallel to The Manchurian Candidate but instead of Korean brainwashing, it’s 9th century Chinese sorcery.

Ninjas All The Way Down: The Mysterious World of Godfrey Ho
By Craig Lines
The exquisite filmmaking makes this spectacular–panoramic landscapes, lavish costumes, intricately detailed sets, all gorgeous. Every shot is a stunning composition of light and shadow, and the camera lingers on each frame with ponderous and quiet respect, the kind that film students will gush over for years.
(Prime Video in the US, rent only in the UK)
Fearless Hyena (1979)
When people cite Rush Hour to reference Jackie Chan, it just goes to show they don’t know Jackie at all. Long before Jackie crossed over to Hollywood, he made dozens of films that truly captured his astounding Kung Fu skills, unrestricted by U.S. insurance liability. His late ‘70s period was particularly ripe because he was in peak physical shape and first creating his unique acrobatic comedies. Remember that chopstick dumpling training scene between Po and Shifu in Kung Fu Panda? In Fearless Hyena, Jackie and his shifu (James Tien) do it in live-action, no wires, no CGI, and the choreography is absolutely mind-blowing.
Wheels on Meals (1984)
Jackie Chan earned his Kung Fu prowess from being trained from childhood in traditional Chinese Opera. Many of his classmates also became stars in martial arts film. This is one of two collaborations between him and his two martial brothers, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao (the other is Dragons Forever).

Jackie Chan’s Hard Road to Hollywood

A modern comedy shot in Barcelona, the chemistry between Jackie, Sammo and Yuen is magical as they bring the fastest three-person sparring scenes ever captured. On top of that, Jackie faces off against real-life kickboxing champion Benny ‘The Jet’ Urquidez in what is considered by many as the greatest fight scene ever filmed.
(US only)
Knockabout (1979)
Knockabout is Yuen Biao’s first lead role after dozens of supporting roles. His acrobatic skills are unparalleled, stronger than Jackie’s because his body frame is built like a gymnast. Sammo Hung’s girth has typecast him as villains and buffoons. Nevertheless, he’s a leading director and choreographer and serves as both in this film, on top of playing a comic beggar who trains Yuen in jump rope monkey Kung Fu (that’s right–jump rop –you have to see it to understand).

It’s a slow build past some goofy comic hijinks, because Yuen’s skills improve over the course of the film. In a fight against Hoi Sang Lee, Yuen pummels so many goose-egg bruises into his noggin that he looks like the coronavirus. But once the training begins through to the final fight, Yuen and Sammo show why they are legends in the industry.

Dirty Ho (1979)
When this film came out, the title wasn’t as funny as it is now. But it still works in a way because this is one of the best Kung Fu slapstick comedies. Starring some of top talent from Shaw Brother studios, including Gordon Liu, Wang Yue, and Lo Lieh, it’s full of the stylish long-take choreography and blazing stunts using real fire long before CGI.

The Man From Hong Kong: A Genuinely Dangerous Action Movie
By Craig Lines
It’s a classic tale of hidden master, a punk student, and notorious villains, including hilarious absurdities like sex change tea, and wheelchair and crutch fighting. The discreet Kung Fu challenge while sampling rare wines out of crazy cups is ludicrous fun; the sort that only master fight choreographer Lau Kar-leung can deliver.
The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1984)
Here is another classic from Gordon Liu and Lau Kar-leung, but serious and somber. Alexander Fu Sheng, a prominent leading man, died in a tragic car crash during production, making this his final film. His character suffers PTSD after losing his family in a horrific opening ambush, but his storyline dangles unfinished.

The film was rewritten to focus Gordon and Lau, as well as the always brilliant Kara Hui. The cast goes all out to honor their fallen comrade’s legacy, showcasing some of the finest weapon choreography ever shot. Based on the legend of the Yang family generals, the untimely death tugs hard on the heartstrings for anyone in the know.
Return to the 36th Chamber (1980)
Just one more Gordon Liu and Lau Kar-leung project, this is the sequel to The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, which is also amazing and available on Amazon Prime. However, Return to the 36th Chamber has such an odd concept for a sequel that warrants special attention.

The 36th Chamber Trilogy‏ – Essential Kung Fu Movie Viewing
By Craig Lines
Liu plays a swindler impersonating the Shaolin monk San Te, the character he played in the first film. When his clan is oppressed by the Manchus gang, Liu sneaks into Shaolin, only to be deceptively trained by the real San Te, then returns for vengeance. His clan are cloth dyers, which makes for colorful pools for villains to plunge.
Liu’s uproarious rooftop Kung Fu and his battle with Wang Lung-Wei’s bench-fighter gang are outstanding. Kara Hui has the best retort after Gordon tries to play off his lack of Kung Fu, claiming it’s only for “universal peace,” and not revenge. She claps back “Huh! That’s a stupid Kung Fu.”
The Lady is the Boss (1983)
Kara Hui (aka Kara Wai) is one of the greatest Kung Fu divas of all, yet she’s only known by true devotees of the genre. If you’ve never heard of her, here is one of her finest comedy vehicles. Set in modern-day Hong Kong, Hui plays an American master returning to save her father’s Kung Fu school after his passing. Lau Kar-leung is the eldest student in charge (also the choreographer) and he resists her attempts to modernize.
Long take fights are staged in a topless club, a disco, and finally, a gymnastic gym replete with rings, parallel bars, and a beam, perfect for the choreographic shenanigans only Lau can bring. Gordon Liu appears with hair, which feels wrong because he built his reputation on playing bald monks.
Crippled Avengers (1978)
From director Chang Cheh, the “Godfather of Kung Fu Films,” Crippled Avengers stars four members of the Venoms crew, from Chang’s classic The Five Venoms (also available on Amazon Prime).

The Five Deadly Venoms: An Essential Martial Arts Movie
By Craig Lines
It was repackaged as The Return of the Five Venoms (and also Mortal Combat), however it is its own standalone masterpiece and has nothing to do with the original beyond the cast.
Lu Feng (Centipede from the Venoms crew) gets his arms chopped off and replaced by iron arms (a plot device that RZA echoed The Man with the Iron Fists). Lu and his father, played by the rough and tumble Chan Kuan Tai, cripple the heroes, who must then walk the road of vengeance while handicapped. The portrayal of the disabilities is dated (arm tied behind the back for the amputee, eyes closed for the blinded) but the choreography is ingenious.
Five Elements Ninjas (1982)
Another echo of The Five Venoms from the sanguineous Chang Cheh, Five Elements Ninjas showcases the director’s unique eye for fantasy. It’s an orgy of weird fantasy weapons and ultraviolence, bloody fight scene after bloody fight scene, a cult film of truly epic proportions. As the title says, the ninjas are based on the five elements.
The gold ninjas don gold lame suits and switchblade shield hats. The wood ninjas look like rejected apple trees in The Wizard of Oz. If you turn this film into a drinking game where you take a shot whenever blood is spilled, you won’t make it past the first half hour.
The Web of Death (1976)
What is the ultimate Kung Fu WMD? It’s a tarantula that roars like an elephant and shoots acidic webs, sparks, and death rays, and it decimates the wuxia world. The Web of Death has everything a cult film requires: crazy weapons, cross dressing, romance, complex set-pieces, halls of traps, including acid pits, spiked poles and dragon-headed sparkler cannons, silly superheroes and villains in costumes that would make MCU heroes blush. Filled with jaw dropping WTF moments, it’s a real treat for anyone into cheesy over-the-top Kung Fu cinema.
The Bride with White Hair (1993)
Based on a wuxia novel, The Bride with White Hair is a surreal plunge into the Kung Fu subgenre of Fant-Asia which blossomed in the ‘90s. It’s a doomed romance between rival cult members set in a world of swords and sorcery that stars Brigette Lin in the spurned titular role and the dreamy heartthrob Leslie Cheung.
What makes this stand out was the visionary direction of Ronny Yu. His pre-CGI special effects hold up surprisingly well. Lin’s characterization of the bride was so compelling that it spawned an homage in The Forbidden Kingdom and a remake in The White Haired Witch. The Bride with White Hair II is also available on Amazon Prime which reunites Lin and Cheung, but without Yu’s direction it’s not nearly as special.
(US only)
Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010)
Fant-Asia has been revitalized with the advent of CGI. Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame marked a triumphant return to form for director Tsui Hark. Armed with quixotic special effects, Hark casts Andy Lau as the legendary detective Di Renjie, who is like a Tang Dynasty Sherlock Holmes. Wuxia films are akin to comic book movies, filled with glaringly overdone heroes and villains, super saturated color schemes, and a lot of flying about.
It’s high fantasy wirework in front of CG backgrounds with physics-defying fight choreography by Sammo Hung (Kung Fu physics are not subject to the laws of gravity). Most of all, it takes unexpected turns like the old Fant-Asia story arcs have always done.
(US only)
Tai Chi Zero (2012)
Director Stephen Fung took Fant-Asia another step into an emergent subgenre of Shanghai Steampunk (Legend of Korra is another example). It’s an action comedy about the legendary forefather of Tai Chi, Yang Luchan, in what was meant to be the launch of a trilogy. However, it was filmed back-to-back with the second installment, Tai Chi Hero (not free on Amazon Prime), which was released only a month later and that proximity depleted their box office returns.
Nevertheless, Tai Chi Zero was an Official Selection at several notable international film festivals because it was so stylish and funny. Both films end on cliffhangers in anticipation of the next chapter, but Tai Chi Hero loses the momentum of its predecessor, except for the final cliffhanging tease. There’s been no further development on the final chapter Tai Chi Summit since Tai Chi Hero flopped.
(US only)
JCVD (2012)
Jean-Claude Van Damme opens this French film with a remarkable long take fight, showing he still had it on the brink of turning 50, but it’s not really a martial arts film. He plays a self-deprecating caricature of himself, although not as comedic as his lampooning self-portrayal in the Amazon Original Series Jean-Claude Van Johnson.
There’s some top-notch cinematography including more complex long takes, remarkable displays of technical skill, and directorial timing. But it’s all about Van Damme’s confession scene when he breaks the fourth wall and discusses his filmmaking process in that weird recursive, artsy French film way. It’s a long-take monologue, and Van Damme nails it emotionally with a heartfelt confession that’s not so much amazing acting as it is brutally honest. He lays it out, bares his soul, and surprisingly, it’s a sympathetic soul. It’s a truly captivating scene, a dramatic triumph that no one ever saw coming, completely redefining Van Damme as an actor.
(US only)
The Man from Nowhere (2010)
This was Korea’s highest grossing film that year. It’s a gritty and brutally bloody tale of a pawnshop owner, played by Won Bin, who unwittingly receives a camera bag filled with stolen heroin, attracting the attention of the drug ring gangsters.
However, he’s a retired special agent with fierce combat skills, tossed into a ghetto tale with exotic dancers, organ harvesting, an innocent child who needs protection, and gang wars. Won Bin won many dramatic accolades with the five films he made, including Taegukgi and Mother. This was his final one to date and he sells the ultraviolence with remarkable panache.
(Prime Video in the US, rent only in UK)
Kundo: Age of the Rampant (2014)
This is another outstanding Korean martial arts film, set in the Joseon period. It echoes Robin Hood, complete with a fighting monk like Friar Tuck, a Maid Marian type, only she’s a keen archer, and a Little John character wielding a shot-put ball on a rope for brutal ultra violence. Ha Jung-woo stars as the lead, a butcher who wields butcher knives, which just adds to the bloodiness. The fight choreography is fun and sanguineous, and the characters were well fleshed out, even the villain. Like a lot of Korean cinema, it takes some surprising turns in the details, little scenes that feel fresh in their presentation. And the panoramic shots are visually epic.
(US only)
Redeemer (2015)
Marko Zaror brings an exotic Chilean actioner full of fight choreography that’s merciless, witty, and precise. Zaror is cut and yoked like a beast. He can catch great flying kicks air, roll well for nods to MMA, and handle complex continuous fights. Redeemer includes several long take scenes with the camera aggressively circling around battle, showcasing a masterful command of action and cinematography.
Set in Chile’s cool seascapes and weather worn graffiti-covered ghettos, Redeemer has a strong Catholic theme, lots of crucifixes and pondering about divine justice, which totally works as atmosphere for this fascinating fight flick.
The Octagon (1980)
Before Chuck Norris became an invincible meme, he churned out a handful of Hollywood martial arts feature films. His third effort, The Octagon, co-starring Lee Van Cleef, is one of his best. It’s a ninja tale, pitting Chuck against noted masters like Richard Norton, Tadashi Yamashita, and his brother Aaron Norris, fighting his way into a ninja terrorist camp where the central ring is “the Octagon.” It was this film that inspired Jason Cusson to design the trademarked Octagon used in the Ultimate Fighting Championships.
Ninja III: The Domination (1984)
In the ‘80s, there was a proliferation of cheesy Ninja films and Sho Kosugi dominated the trend. This is one of those movies that is so horrible, it’s awesome. And it’s Sho’s masterpiece. Lucinda Dickey was a Solid Gold Dancer, who starred in the breakdancing films Breakin’ and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, which bookended Ninja III. While she wasn’t a martial artist in real life, she has the moves, adding to the huge stable of martial actors who started as dancers (even Bruce Lee was a cha cha champion).
It’s incredibly dated with references to video games, aerobics, and the most gawdawful soundtrack ever. The choreography is horrible; Sho overacts whenever it comes to selling a punch; it’s all about Lucinda who tries–really tries–to act her way through a ridiculously dumb story about being possessed by a ninja. But the final sword fight has a ninja zombie and it’s the funniest example of what we had to endure during the ‘80s ninja craze.
(US only)
Shaolin Dolemite (1999)
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
There was Oscar buzz about Eddie Murphy’s depiction of Rudy Ray Moore in the biopic Dolemite Is My Name, but if you haven’t seen a Dolemite film, you really don’t know. Moore played Dolemite half a dozen times, but ironically in this film, he plays Monk Ru-Dee instead, and this is the only one with any real martial arts in it.
Moore took the cuttings from a 1986 Taiwanese film titled Ninja: The Final Duel, and spliced himself in to create his own story, and it’s just so cray. Beyond Moore, there are bizarre characters like the drunken Sam the Spliff, the topless Ninja Ho, and the coonskin cap wearing Davy Crockett. The story barely makes a lick of sense, but who cares? It’s mother-effin Dolemite.

Jasmine, Ceylon, Turkish
26. Jasmin tea: Can you draw / paint? Wanna show me something?
Yes, I draw AND paint but like I’ve only painted a couple of times… (I should really make a sketchbook tour video cause there’s some gems in there)
and YES I want to show you something absolutely
but since I can never decide on anything, here’s a little horde of my favorite previously unposted drawings/paintings :) Three on my legs(yes you read that right), two watercolors, two paintings on stiff boards, one on a large canvas, and four drawings
I’ll be putting them under the cut with notes on what they all are because I’m so incredibly indecisive so I’m just putting a bunch of them :D
15. Ceylon tea: Do you have a song you like, but have bad memories with?
So there’s not one that popped in my head, but I did spend like a month learning Snowy Day by Caroline Dare on the guitar for a school talent show and I was freaking out about it for the whole time and then when my audition came I totally choked and I was really upset that I didn’t do a good job at the audition. Needless to say, I didn’t get in. So it does come with those feelings when I hear it now.
I’m Still Here by John Rzeznik (Treasure Planet) literally always makes me feel like crying a little bit because it really resonates with me and whatnot. I love it though, it’s a cathartic one :) So not specific memories, just like a general theme.
19. Turkish tea: What is your favourite cake?
Look. If it’s cold cake I’m not super picky…
Funfetti just makes me happy :Dbut my other top picks are white/yellow/vanilla and chocolate
Thanks love!
Art from the first question under the cut with explanations/commentary/notes
Tumblr media
This was the first drawing on my legs I ever did and I like it even though it’s really underexposed. Cute little winged figure :)
Tumblr media
This is part of a set of doodles I did all over my legs at a later date. Cute Klance doodle :)
Tumblr media
and this was on my other leg(the rest of the drawings did not look nearly this good so that’s all from that :)
Tumblr media
This is a watercolor vaguely inspired by one of my closest friends IRL and I gave it to her for her birthday
Tumblr media
And this is my favorite more recent watercolor landscape :)
Tumblr media
this one is hard to see but it’s a painting on a thin board canvas. The idea is that it’s of a pine tree clearing and the stars on a clear night(I was camping and I really wanted to paint it so this is the first real painting I did)
Tumblr media
And I love this one that took me like two days and I’m so proud of how the lighting and the fire turned out so I’m really proud of how that looks(also a thin board canvas) It’s not a character I just liked the idea and how it ended up looking
Tumblr media
This is my first big painting on a stretched canvas and to be honest I hated it when i first painted it but I was proud of the tree in the middle and the grass along the bottom, but it’s about a year old and it’s really grown on me. :)
And some drawings from my sketchbooks:
Tumblr media
This pose is inspired from some HTTYD concept art in the credits of the second movie that I thought the pose matched the fire nation in my book series so that happened
Tumblr media
This is day seven of last Inktober that I never posted but she’s adorable and I love her so much
Tumblr media
Another Inktober pic I never posted but they’re cute little stick figures dancing in a bottle with hearts coming out the top and I made it gay after my brother left the room so honestly what more could you want
Tumblr media
And finally a Toothless redraw that turned out REALLY well and I was SO happy about it and honestly still am

This Must Be The Place: Post Punk Tribes 1978 - 1982 from MikeKeegan on Vimeo.
THIS MUST BE THE PLACE: POST-PUNK TRIBES 1978 – 1982 Friday, July 27 – Sunday, July 29
After the much-hyped filth and fury of the initial punk movement almost instantly combusted or codified, things got much more interesting. In the halcyon pre-internet days, regional scenes were allowed to grow and develop their own identifiable and often highly idiosyncratic sounds, word of one another’s development spreading slowly through fanzines and small mail order distributors. Lucky for us, there were also cameras laying around, and the rare films in this series provide an invaluable snapshot of one of the most exciting – and one of the most loosely-defined – periods of music in the 20th Century. THIS MUST BE THE PLACE is your highly opinionated guide to viewing these creatures in their native habitats.
Friday, July 27: LA BRUNE ET MOI Filmed in 1979, barely released in 1980 and subsequently completely lost until 2005, LA BRUNE ET MOI (a play on the French translation of ‘50s rock & roll film THE GIRL CAN’T HELP IT, LA BLONDE ET MOI) was surreptitiously shot in eight days on borrowed equipment. There’s a love story in there, but it’s mostly an excuse to show great performances by Ici Paris, Artefact, Edith Nylon, The Party, Marquis De Sade and gads more. Dir: Philippe Puicouyoul. Starring Pierre Clementi, Anouschska and Pierre-Jean Cayatte. In French w/ English subtitles. Digital. 1979. 50 mins. 7:30pm
ROUGH CUT AND READY DUBBED Shot on Super8 between 1978 and 1981, ROUGH CUT AND READY DUBBED captures and questions the splintered, post-Pistols UK punk scene, from scenesters to skinheads to legendary BBC Radio One godhead John Peel. Featuring performances by A Certain Ratio, The Selecter, Cockney Rejects and Sham 69. Dirs: Hasan Shah & Dom Shaw. Digital. 1982. 59 mins. 8:40pm
Plus – a SPECIAL SECRET MOVIE after the 8:40pm show! You have NOT seen this thing!
Saturday, July 28: THE SLOG MOVIE David Markey’s homespun 1982 document of the LA/OC early ‘80s hardcore scene, THE SLOG MOVIE serves as fanzine on film, combining incredible live performances by vital bands of the era (such as Circle One, Red Kross, TSOL, Fear, the Circle Jerks and many more) along with segments of hangin’ out at Oki Dog with Pat Smear and Randy Rampage, a Raymond Pettibon skateboard commercial, and much more. An indispensible document of a time, place and (under)age! Dir: David Markey. Digital. 1982. 59 mins. 7:30pm
I CAN SEE IT AND I’M PART OF IT: San Francisco Punk Portraits 1978 - 82 The time between Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974 and Reagan's ascent from CA governor to U.S. presidency in 1981 marks a prolific surge of artistic and creative production across California, often taking a sharp trajectory from the 60s utopian idealism as a strong sense of distrust and disillusionment cast its long, dark shadows and was reflected in music – once again, the natural channel for response, reaction and outrage. In San Francisco the thriving music scene developed its own punk conceit, an arsenal comprised of bands, filmmakers, artists, clubs and the ever-supportive denizens along for the ride. Gender factors largely into the equation as women were not merely audience members, but forceful contributors driving the scene. The boundary between the spectator and performer was often blurred as audience members were inspired to pick up instruments, form bands and be on the stage the very next week. The DIY aesthetic prevailed… and the cameras were rolling! I CAN SEE IT AND I’M PART OF IT is a unique glimpse into SF’s punk past – an archival treasure trove comprised of moving and still images, both amateur and professional. This shorts program, curated especially for THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, includes but is not limited to: IN THE RED is a slice of life from the perspective of two friends (co-directors Liz Keim and Karen Merchant) who followed the scene at close range. A poetic tapestry of live performance, intimate interviews (Will Shatter exposed!) and cityscapes. In the Red gives insight into a creative and politically charged environment at the dawn of the 80s. A dusty and gritty gem! Dirs: Liz Keim & Karen Merchant. Digital. 1978. 20 mins. LOUDER, FASTER, SHORTER is raw and powerful performance document recorded at the Mabuhay Gardens in March 1978 during a benefit concert for striking Kentucky coal miners. Bands UXA, The Dils, The Avengers, Sleepers, and Mutants raised over $3000! Beautifully shot, it’s an insider’s view that takes you to the belly of the beast, a musical time traveler’s delight. Dir: Mindaugus Bagdon. 16mm. 1978. 17 mins. BRUCE CONNER, a key figure in San Francisco’s artistic community since the 1950s, began documenting the SF punk scene in 1977 when his friend Toni Basil (the dancer from his seminal film Breakaway and of “Oh Mickey you’re so fine…” fame) invited him to see Devo. This portion of I CAN SEE IT AND I’M PART OF IT includes a slideshow presentation of Conner’s legendary portraits of individuals and performance shots, a primary element of the history of SF punk. Conner segment includes music videos he made during this time: MONGOLOID (music by Devo), and Mea Culpa (feauturing music by David Byrne & Brian Eno). Special thanks to Michelle Silva and Robert Conway of the Conner Family Trust, Paule Anglim, Christine and Travis and from Paule Anglim Gallery. Dir: Bruce Conner. Digital. 1977 – 1981. Approx.15 mins. Complete Program Length Approx. 70 mins. 9pm
BUZZ OR HOWL UNDER THE INFLUENCE Despite the heavy regionalism we’re focusing on in this series, these bands did not exist in a bubble. Through various magical combinations of guile, luck, stupidity and very hard work, plenty of bands got in the van and relentlessly criss-crossed the nation, serving as Johnny Appleseeds of the underground. Once the van was back on the road, a new scene had sprung. Thanks to the Hugh M. Hefner Archive of the Moving Image, we’re tapping into an unimagined motherlode of live footage from the likes of Public Image Limited, Black Flag, the Avengers, Suicide and many more, much of it shot for regional television programs or personal collections. 16mm/35mm/Digital. 1978 – 1982. Approx. 75 mins. 10:20pm
Sunday, July 29: DEBT BEGINS AT 20 Filmed in dour, totally appropriate black-and-white (much like that other paean to the Pittsburgh existence, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD), DEBT BEGINS AT 20 is a completely charming and accurate portrait of how artistically-inclined punk and synth enthusiasts in smaller regional scenes made the screechy, caterwauling tuneless tunes we’ve grown to fetishize. And why did they do it? Because they were bored out of their minds. – Bret Berg, Destroy All Movies Dir: Stephanie Beroes. 16mm. 1980. 50 mins. 7pm
DOWNTOWN 81 Jean Michel Basquiat is your cash-strapped guide around downtown Manhattan circa the end of the world, or more accurately 1981. It looks like a neutron bomb went off, and the only living creatures left are the weirdo, omnivorously post-everything musicians and artists hiding in stark lofts, cramped apartments and moldy nightclubs. This movie is an embarrassment of riches: watch DNA shred through “Blonde Redhead”, see James White & The Black’s aggro no-wave soul revue live on stage, plus Debbie Harry, Tuxedo Moon, Kid Creole & the Coconuts and more. DOWNTOWN 81 is, simply put, the coolest. Dir: Edo Bertoglio. Written by Glen O’Brien. 35mm. 1981. 73 mins. 8:15pm
Programmed by Mike Keegan and Gina Basso. Special Thanks to Bret Berg, Zack Carlson, Jake Perlin, David Markey, Liz Kleim, Mindy Bagdon, Michelle Silva, Robert Conway, Paule Anglim, Linda Scobie at Canyon Cinema and Dino Everett at the Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive at the School of Cinematic Arts.

Actress Spotlight: Fredi Washington in “Black And Tan”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a great deal of class, talent and beauty loaded in this short film from the early days of "talkies", 1929′s Black And Tan. Man, this is a GEM. We're talking Duke Ellington flyin' high in his legendary career as a jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader and the beautiful pioneer of cinema, Fredi Washington, as his wife and doomed dancer. Film fans know Fredi best as the conflicted racial passer 'Peola' in the soapy melodrama from 1934, Imitation of Life, where she plays a girl who rejects her Black mama, pretends to be White and who ends up flinging herself on her mother's coffin in a veil of cinematic shame (yes, these are spoilers. A full review will be forthcoming on this infamous little saga at some point soon), but Fredi was actually quite a unique presence in film at a difficult point in its history for Black folks.
It was pretty difficult to catch a break in Hollywood if you weren't White. The stereotypes were running amuk using the face of a manufactured Blackness the movie industry created because of a racism, ignorance and contempt for humanity shown towards Black performers that was practically ingrained in the national culture, particularly in the segregated South where the mere sight of a Black person in a non-submissive role was incredibly taboo. This was the messed-up landscape talents like Fredi Washington entered as an actress and performer and was the major reason why a potentially promising career was cut short. However, here, her biggest role in Imitation was yet to come, the role that would unfairly define her to both Black and White filmgoers, and one that was as far removed from her thinking and personal life as a character could get.
youtube
In Black & Tan, Fredi has a fresh and natural presence from the moment she walks onscreen, with a hint of pain that flashes across her face in a brief scene, subtly showing the danger threatening to overwhelm her. She’s a dancer wed to a struggling musician (played by the super-suave Duke Ellington, of course), but she has a weak heart ticking brokenly and winding down what’s left of her life.
It’s a simple almost rudimentary plot but Fredi’s earnestness and style make it work, and pulls the action together. After being out of work, she’s landed a coveted dancing job and insists on helping her hubby catch a break with his band. Happy ending? Oh no. It leads to a sad, sad climax.
What I really like about the short is the confidence and skill of the performers. There’s a cool little scene where Ellington on the piano, and  Arthur Whetsol on trumpet are having practice time, and it becomes a bit of a jam session.  Fredi’s standing beside the keys with a radiant smile on her face as she listens to the men getting down to what they did so well. You can tell in the moment these guys seemed to be having fun. Opportunities were few and far between for Black creatives to dazzle the film audience and show what they were really capable of, so when the spotlight was there for the taking, they really didn’t waste it! They represented some of the best parts of themselves.
Tumblr media
It’s also one of my favorite roles for Fredi Washington, although just a short, because the naturalism and ease of her screen vibe is a lovely indication and hint at how placed in a dignified cultural framework, she simply had more to work with creatively and in my opinion, emotionally. Imitation Of Life may have been her breakout role, but from my perspective, the way her screen image in this particular film was unfairly manipulated as a woman of color floating disconnectedly in a hostile and indifferent White world, lent to cliches, reducing a woman’s existence to an ‘abnormal’ other. In Imitation, there was a constant compare and contrast of her passing for White character to the privilege of the White counterparts who had no such struggle for social and economic clout. Although Washington does meet a tragic end in Black & Tan, there’s a confidence she exudes, a familiarity, that’s refreshing. And a sense of grounding that was likely a lot more realistic for light-skinned African American women rather than the rootless desperation of a Peola.
Tumblr media
As for the nightclub scenes where Fredi spirals downwards into a total collapse, it’s actually a fine piece of acting!
Decked out in a dazzling number, Fredi’s vision is blurring and she sways on her feet as the smooth melody of the music plays. A bunch of Ellingtons fill her sight and the dancers multiply. Bad things are sure to come. Tragedy is near.
The way the club scenes are filmed is very interesting. The artistic manner of this young woman’s impending doom visually grabbed my attention. Black & Tan may have been only a musical short, not a full-length film, but the details is what make it great!
Fredi is draped in a costume that on many other actresses would make them appear high-glam and exotic. On the body of a frail and sick performer, it almost overwhelms her frame. She sinks into it. You can tell she’s teetering on the edge and working on what’s left of adrenaline. There’s a burst of it as she kicks into hyperdrive and does a frenetic dance, her final performance, to the beat of the band. Fredi was a fantastic performer, showing an intense energy. She is wonderful at first, but on her last leg in these few remaining moments of her life. Carried off the stage after crumpling in a heap on the floor, the last things she sees and hears on her deathbed is her beloved husband and the masterpiece of the film, the lush and hypnotic Black And Tan Fantasy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her deathscene was artfully filmed, heartache, regret and tenderness etched into the face of a woman cut down in her prime. With very few lines in this short and a basic premise, Fredi steals the show. She shows glimmers of what she could’ve been as an old movie queen, if given the chances of a Claudette Colbert or Myrna Loy. She’s luminous and never crosses the line into hysteria or camp. She’s just a girl in love and watching what she’s treasured slip away as she fades into darkness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1929, the African-American presence was limited but there were reflections here and there in Hollywood-land of the magic of the Black female performer. The same year, Nina Mae McKinney had burst onto the scene as the exuberant ‘Chick’ in King Vidor’s Hallelujah!, a Black musical production which broke a bit of new ground.
Women like Nina and Fredi were rare in the fact that they presented a different aspect of Black womanhood, Nina going on to become the very first bonafide glamorous Black female star and Fredi continuing in a career that while unfairly stunted, encompassed stage and screen, starring in a Broadway production in 1939 with screen legend Ethel Waters in Mamba’s Daughters. The problem was the scarcity of roles; they were coming at a time when the White audience wasn’t quite ready for cherished stereotypes to be challenged.
Fredi Washington stayed in the game for some years later before departing Hollywood for advocacy and marriage, while her counterpart Nina Mae’s parts got smaller and smaller until she left film altogether, dying in relative obscurity in the late 1960′s.
The careers of women like her and Fredi shared something special, however. And while they did not get the careers they probably deserved, their presence onscreen helped to work towards changing the film presence of women of color in general. Without Fredi, there likely wouldn’t have been Lena Horne, without Lena, maybe not an Eartha Kitt or Diahann Carroll. Who knows if they helped knock the doors down a bit more for Halle Berry a few decades later! It was maybe not so much the reaching of the golden rings of fame and cinematic glory in the moment for these truly gifted ladies, but a ripple effect which could still be felt today.
Modern Hollywood has more Black female representation than they’ve ever had in its history. Yet there’s still so much work to do and progress to be made.
But for a magical moment in 1929, performers like Fredi Washington had cracked open that door to the future. Just a little bit.The short’s one of the most interesting glimpses of Black talent and glamour of the era. I enjoyed it so much! And appreciated the heart Washington put into what might’ve been a simple throwaway character. Check it out and be taken back to a different time where the struggle was a lot harder, but the determination to carve out a rightful space in history shone bright.

My Top 25 Movies of 2020.
It is indeed time… or at least, as is tradition, it is indeed now overdue for me to dust off the cobwebs from my Tumblr account and post my Top 25 movies of the year. This time for 2020. That funny old year, huh? Where - if some are to be stupidly believed - “no films got released because of the pandemic”.
I thought I was done with this after 12 years and concluding with my Top 25 of the decade effort and yet here I am. Back rather egotistically because 2 people told me how much they look forward to reading this. Go figure! Years 2008 through to present are available in the archive. Frequent visitors know that I’ll throw out a few special mentions to all the films that I wish I could’ve included but couldn’t make them fit yet believe they deserve a shout out regardless and then I get stuck in to what I think are the 25 best films of the year.
As always, films listed are based on their UK release date whether that’s in the cinema or on DVD, VOD etc. Anyway, without further ado, here’s the ‘also-rans’ and ‘near-misses’ separated per genre that very nearly made the final list:
Setting my stall out straight away, Steve McQueen’s Small Axe was very much TV to me and won’t get ranked within my film listing. I loved two of the efforts a great deal (Education and Mangrove), liked two but found them lacking (Red, White & Blue and Alex Wheatle) and did not get what everyone else seems to from the other (Lover’s Rock).
In terms of documentaries this year, I thought Frank Marshall did a fabulous job with The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart; a comprehensive study of the personal complexities and professional excellence of an incredibly underappreciated band. I found On The Record to be a difficult but inspiring watch and its background ‘politics’ exposed the hypocrisy of Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey in a manner we’re not talking loud enough about. Hitsville: The Making of Motown was an extensive, lovely historical tribute to an era and a style of music, full of great tunes and equally great talking head anecdotes. And finally Belushi managed to find fresh angles and previously untold stories about one of the most mythologised comedy stars of all time, simply by pulling the man to the forefront ahead of his talents.
For dramas, I enjoyed Trial of the Chicago 7 a great deal and am an absolute sucker for the work of Aaron Sorkin but bad casting (Eddie Redmayne) and stunt casting (Sacha Baron Cohen) hurt this film. I’m a sucker for a disaster movie and Pål Øie made an incredibly entertaining one with the Norwegian high-melodrama, The Tunnel. Edward Norton’s long-gestating Motherless Brooklyn was a solid, old-fashioned PI yarn with some great casting to back it up. It’s the most alive Bruce Willis has been in years and it served to remind you that Alec Baldwin can be quite the terrific actor when he’s not being an utter joke of a human. I liked The Vast of Night a great deal when in the throes of watching it but liked it less in the aftermath. Cut Throat City was the underrated dramatic gem of the year in a lot of ways and showed that RZA has a great deal of skill as a legit filmmaker, when not being caught up in the ‘gimmicks’. O.G finally landed here via Sky Atlantic of all places, rather than any sort of VOD release, and it was an enthralling drama that served to remind us all how brilliant Jeffrey Wright can be when not overacting to the point of cringe or being stuck with really terrible writing (hello, TV’s Westworld!).
With the blockbuster season at the cinema all but dead from the outset, the joys of the action genre were to be found in the little b-movies tucked away on streaming platforms and VOD. Quick notable exceptions were The Outpost which was a reminder that Rod Lurie can deliver a hell of an action sequence, blighted by truly awful film-damaging casting and Extraction which was a well-directed derivative piece of hokum. Donnie Yen delivered an earnest, entertaining end to one of the surprise action franchises of the last decade with IP Man 4 that not even Scott Adkins could fuck up. Hack director Deon Taylor accidentally delivered Black and Blue; a pretty good ode to the ‘man on the run’ non-stop action thrillers of the 80s and 90s – with Naomi Harris killing it in the lead role. Netflix tucked away two of the greatest b-movie actioners of 2020 with The Decline (a ‘Doomsday Preppers’ training camp goes horribly wrong) and Earth & Blood (a sawmill owner uses his place of work as a battleground to take on the cartel). And, finally, the Ma Dong-seok (aka Don Lee) Taken rip-off Unstoppable arrived to streaming and turned out to be vastly superior to all of the films it was a knock-off of.
It was a great year for horror, especially if you were open to the sort of scares you were after. Sea Fever didn’t stick the landing but delivered an ace sense of foreboding and tension building for the most part. Harpoon was a sneakily nasty, surprisingly engrossing, violent little film. VFW was a lot of fun but nowhere near as good as its concept and cast suggested it was going to be. It’s also been subsequently marred by the stories coming out of its production and the revelations about Fred Williamson. I thought Come To Daddy was an absolute gift of a horror comedy that kept swerving whenever you thought you had a handle on where it was going. And Elijah Wood continues to show himself to be an American national treasure. After Midnight was an intriguing relationship drama with a horror bent and You Should Have Left, the Stir of Echoes reunion we’ve all long sought, would work as an off-kilter double-bill with it. Kevin Bacon is brilliant in it. Vampires Vs The Bronx is a totally disposable but immensely fun ode to The Lost Boys and The Monster Squad that’ll serve you well on a lazy Saturday night. Black Water: Abyss was a really good little creature feature with a ridiculous ending that infuriates. And Train To Busan: Pennisular was a pretty shit Train to Busan sequel but an immensely entertaining post-apocalyptic zombie action movie.
Onwards is worth mentioning for the fun and moving animated ride it initially presents as but, like too much Pixar nowadays, it does not hold up to repeat viewing.
Comedy-wise, I thoroughly enjoyed Bill & Ted Face The Music but thought its gag-rate was far too hit and miss for it to take a place on the top spot. Buffaloed was a kind of “M’eh” blue-collar Wolf of Wall Street with yet another fantastic ‘How the fuck isn’t she a huge star already’ turn from Zoey Deutch. Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made was a quirky out-of-leftfield oddity that me and my eldest son enjoyed a great deal. Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga was not the travesty you would’ve thought it’d be, mainly because of Rachel McAdams, but if Will Ferrell had just leaned a little harder towards his more absurdist style of humour (the killer fairy shit for example?) this could have been so much more. Finally, the second Borat film had some utterly majestic moments of cringe-comedy that make it worthy of a mention but the mechanics of joke-execution and faked set-pieces were far more on show this time around.
And now, if you’re still hanging in there that is, here is my actual Top 25 films of 2020…
Tumblr media
25. Skyfire
Tumblr media
I don't know whether it's because I’ve been starved of my usual 'Summer Silly Season' this year but I absolutely fucking LOVED this. It's the stupidest, most ridiculous, relentlessly bonkers "Jurassic Park - but with volcanos" fare you could ask for. I have no idea what the fuck Jason Isaac is doing in this but I’m so glad he is because it just adds to the glorious WTF-ery of it all. It's 30 minutes of mechanical lay-up followed by 60 minutes of non-stop, audacious carnage. It's been a long time since me and my wife have had this much fun watching something.
24. Bad Education
Tumblr media
Dropped exclusively to Sky Cinema here, this is a great little film that has a shocking true story at its centre. Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney are absolutely terrific. Both of them are the sort of talents who've been in bad movies but never ever given a bad performance regardless.
Here both Jackman and Janney are having a ball with the material and they elevate a very good film into something that demands to be seen.
23. Blood Quantum
Tumblr media
This was definitely one of the first-class b-movie horrors of the year for me. It does wonders on screen with very little AND it gives a shot in the arm to the zombie subgenre. It leads you into thinking you're getting yet another zombie-breakout film before expertly wrongfooting you into growing into something else. It's a Native American NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD meets MAD MAX!
22. Bad Boys For Life
Tumblr media
This was a first-rate blast, it really was. From the inexplicable reusing of the 'Simpson/Bruckheimer' production card to the reworking of Mark Mancina's original theme, it draws you straight back to that 1990s blockbuster vibe. It's not just very funny and stacked with some pretty decent action sequences but, rather bizarrely, it actually has something interesting to say about ageing and masculinity... because nowadays Joe Carnahan is killing it when it comes to introspective recalibrations on what it means to be a man. If you were to spoil this movie for someone and reveal what the "twist" is it would sound like the stupidest, hokiest shit ever. And yet inexplicably they make it work. And furthermore, Martin Lawrence goes from the tag-along in this franchise to the platinum level MVP here. The entire final third is held up higher by his insanely good line delivery ("Would you fuck a witch without a condom?") and it's most likely how he plays shit as to why that stupid, hokey plot twist works as well as it does.
Over the course of three separate decades each BAD BOYS entry has, in itself, served to be a somewhat accidentally perfect reflection of the very cinematic decade it landed in: The first is possibly one of the last to truly and wholeheartedly successfully land that perfect marriage between the 'MTV era' and the blockbusters; bringing about the boom of the "music video director as filmmaker" that the 1990s became well known for. The second was a pitch perfect reflection of the gratuitous, often empty-headed, completely excessive pop culture period we were birthing in the 2000s. And the third lands now, right in the very time period where masculinity is being put under a spotlight and men are being asked to be more self-reflective about themselves and their conduct.
With that said, the fourth will obviously therefore land sometime in 2029 and deal with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence wandering a pandemic-ravaged Miami wasteland.
21. Wolfwalkers
Tumblr media
This is one of the most lovely, visually wondrous, sumptuous animated films you'll experience this year. Or in quite some time, actually. It’s not just a great adventure film but it’s also a really effective ‘message’ movie that manages to teach about tolerance and friendship along with the perils of fear-mongering, without ever being overly preachy.
20. An American Pickle
Tumblr media
This was one of the surprises of the year for me; I THOUGHT I was getting a quirky Seth Rogen fish-out-of-water comedy and instead I got that... with a massive dollop of heart, humour and interesting things to say about legacy and 'cancel culture'. I liked it a lot. It's also further evidence of how intriguing a talent Seth Rogen is becoming; jumping between broad commercial fare and original off-kilter stuff like this, producing and developing fascinating projects for film and TV and working to pass the ladder back down to others too.
19. Get Duked
Tumblr media
I say this with only a modicum of bias as I know someone who worked a little bit on this film but this was genuinely brilliant - the absolute laugh-out-loud delight we all need right now. At the time I watched this I don’t think I’d smiled in nearly a fortnight but this broke through with me. Its wrap-up is a little too silly for its own good but that aside, this thing is absolutely stuffed with some TRULY great gags! This is one of the best comedies of the year for me.
18. Host
Tumblr media
I had been giving this the big ol' swerve because it sounded like unoriginal, overhyped pish frankly and... fuck it, if that hype isn't absolutely deserved: It's a lean, effective, scary incredibly enjoyable ride. Made all the more fascinating by the fact it was made remotely on a shoestring with the director apparently never being in the same room as his cast at any one time due to Covid restrictions.
NB: I could not find a GIF to represent Rob Savage’s Host sufficiently so here’s Jack Black doing a backyard pandemic dance instead...
17. Sweetheart
Tumblr media
What a crackin, lean, little horror thriller it is. It gets straight underway from its fade-up and never overcooks itself or leans hard on lazy exposition, silly character actions or bad deus ex machinas. Remember when Jonathan Mostow made BREAKDOWN and it felt like such a shot in the arm for the man-against-the-odds/standard thriller? This is like that - but for survival dramas and creature features! It commits fully to its high concept, helped along by a truly excellent performance by Kiersey Clemons and some really well-delivered set-pieces (that first flare scene is very well done!). If you watched Tom Hanks in CASTAWAY and thought to yourself "This film is great but what it really needs is a monster!" then this is definitely the film for you. And if you believe the rumours, it’s allegedly a sneaky Creature From The Black Lagoon redo for Blumhouse’s expanding ‘Monster Universe’ too.
16. Soul
Tumblr media
I really connected with this. I like Inside Out a great deal but I’ve never understood why it's spoken of as a flawless masterpiece when it's overlong, tonally all over the place and has clunky as fuck casting. In the same breath, I don't understand why the reviews for this are so disparate. I thought it was a wonderful way to spend 100+ minutes. It was visually inventive, funny and inspiring. It doesn't quite seed its VERY deep otherworld-building foundations and Graham Norton doesn't really work in his role but overall I thought it was a delight. And, unlike Onwards, it really does lend itself to repeat visits.
15. Tenet
Tumblr media
I had real trepidation about seeing this what with the reviews being all over the place but... well... Is it complete, barely comprehensible bunkum of the highest order? Yes. Could the film have benefited from Nolan letting his brother Jonathan have a pass at the script? Hell yes! Is it most definitely not the majestic masterpiece of masterpieces it thinks it is? Yup. Yet in spite of ALL that I had an absolute blast with it, I really did. If you give it a seconds thought it crumbles completely as the utter egotistical piffle it really is. But where it excels is in looking so gorgeous, being so kinetic and massive with its action and casting with actors who sell the shit out of a hokey script that you're so consumed with the spectacle you don't smell the bullshit until its over. Washington Jr has come out of nowhere these last few years to make me a big fan of his work - and Robert Pattinson has went from being an actor I couldn't fucking abide to being someone I now really rate and who I came away from watching this thinking "Yeah, that's your goddamn perfect James Bond right there!"
14. Da 5 Bloods
Tumblr media
It works infinitely better as a 'men on a mission' action adventure shot through the off-kilter lens of a Spike Lee "joint" then it does as a searing commentary about race, war, etc. And that's probably why Spike's choice to include real war atrocity photos and documentary footage alongside the narrative doesn't land as successfully as he probably intended it to. But as an overall film, it's a genuinely great watch. Delroy Lindo has always been one of the greatest working actor. Here he perhaps delivers his ultimate masterclass. Regardless of whether awards season moves online or not, you cannot have any SERIOUS dialogue during it that doesn't have his performance heading the conversation. Ignore the dickheads online putting this in the same bubble as TROPIC THUNDER or DIE HARD (??). This is a wink and a nod to TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE and APOCALYPSE NOW, through and through. It's big, bombastic, broad and unafraid to swing out in every direction. It's not flawless but that doesn't mean it's not fuckin ~great~!
13. His House
Tumblr media
This very much stands as both one of the most impressive debuts and modern horror movies I’ve seen in quite some time. It's an effective, lean, interesting film that buries under your skin and takes up residency there. Go into it knowing as little as you possibly can and then let it scare the shit out of you and, in its reveals, kick the shit back into you.
12. Tread
Tumblr media
I really, REALLY liked this. It's my favourite documentary film of this year - made by that fella who did the bonkers-bad killer dog in the warehouse movie with Adrian Brody, no less! It's an absolutely fascinating true story I knew nothing about, brilliantly intermingling talking heads, archival news footage, dramatic reconstruction and audio recordings. It'll really drop your jaw - it's most definitely one of those 'needs to be seen to be believed' type deals because if you described this to someone as having happened they'd never believe you!
11. Bacarau
Tumblr media
No plot description really does this film justice and the less you know going in the better an experience you’ll have. It’s an odd, deeply violent, unsettling, darkly funny, bizarro confection of The Most Dangerous Game meets Assault on Precinct 13 and… well… even that doesn’t really do the film any justice whatsoever. It’s a critique of dire political circumstance mixed with political satire mixed with the tropes of the Western, the siege movie and both horror and comedy. It’s very much its own thing. And that’s what makes it so wonderous.
... and it’s sort of both wondrous AND weird that when searching for Bacarau related GIFs, this was the Brazilian offering I was given! I apologise.
10. Alone
Tumblr media
I found this came out of nowhere to be one of my favourite films of the year; a crazily efficient, brutal B-movie without an inch of fat on it that works its propulsive and well-structured screenplay hard to make you feel like you're seeing a new variant on the "stalked woman in peril" film. John Hyams - son of Peter and the man who reconfigured the UNIVERSAL SOLDIER franchise to superb effect - has made one hell of an effective movie that beautifully captures the vastness of the Pacific Northwest: this is one part DUEL, one part FIRST BLOOD, all parts odes to everything from THE GREY, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE and the last third of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. It's very easy to make films like this. But it's clearly hard to make them as great as Hyams has done here, otherwise everyone would be doing it. Maybe coz what those films don't have is lead performances as strong and brilliant as Jules Willcox and Marc Menchaca give here.
9. American Murder: The Family Next Door
Tumblr media
This is an incredibly powerful true crime documentary on a horrific tragedy, in which Jenny Popplewell tightly and clinically weaves through police interviews, news coverage and Shanann Watts' phone, laptop and social media to weave a moving and ultimately devastating portrait of her and her children's death at the hands of one of the worst forms of evil I’ve ever been exposed to. This still haunts me to this day.
8. Greyhound
Tumblr media
I was really impressed with this. A crisp, lean, tension-drenched watch with yet another rock solid Tom Hanks performance centring it. It strips back all the tropes of these war pictures - the character backstories about post-war hopes and dreams, the cutaways to the families back home, the subplots involving the villains - and keeps a propulsive commitment to just this situation, this boat and the people on it; who only talk to one another about the job they're doing. As a result, it's completely involving and committed with action set-pieces that are clean, tense and entertaining as hell. Genuinely had a great time watching this and highly recommend it.
7. #Alive
Tumblr media
Whilst the TRAIN TO BUSAN sequel earned rightfully shakey reviews, think of this as an unofficial prequel / 'side-sequel'. It is a tight, disciplined thrill-ride that throws up some interesting spins on old zombie set-pieces (climbing zombie vs. toy drone, for example). It may well deflate as it heads to its denouement but all before it was strong and entertaining enough for it to stand as one of his favourite horrors from this year.
6. The Invisible Man
Tumblr media
This started good... then got very good... then got quite frankly flat-out tremendous and then entered a final third flipping anyone the 'bird' who thought that the trailers gave too much away. There is some truly tremendous, inventive and not at all 'cheap' jump scares. In fact, the whole second act is nothing else BUT terrifically effective scare after scare. All bolstered by a REALLY committed lead performance by Elizabeth Moss. Between this and UPGRADE, Leigh Whannell has not only become seriously one to watch but he's possibly just outed himself as John Carpenter's one-true heir.
5. Lynn + Lucy
Tumblr media
I was left completely broken by this - what a truly fantastic piece of British cinema; a dark, uncompromising morality play for the modern age with a truly jaw-dropping performance by Nicola Burley. And, Jesus Christ, what an unbelievable find Roxanne Scrimshaw is?? THIS is her acting debut? Holy SHITBALLS! It's harrowing stuff that'll really make you think.
4. Parasite
Tumblr media
This really is absolutely ~everything~ people are claiming it to be and more too! It's an exquisite piece of work, in love with the art of spinning out a story, narrative layers, sociological parables and effortlessly terrific direction. It builds and builds in an utterly enthralling manner and then... the pressure valve pops, taking you down a whole other audacious avenue that'll have you giggling at the insanity but still completely hooked.
3. Uncut Gems
Tumblr media
It’s alright been memed and GIF’d to death but that doesn’t change the fact that it really is an astounding film - it's completely exhausting and quite honestly one of the most anxiety-inducing films I’ve seen in a long, long time. Even on multiple go-arounds, I found myself screaming at the screen, begging Adam Sandler's character to just fucking STOP for five seconds and... and... it's inescapable as to the direction down in which it heads but it goes there at such a propulsive rate, it is actually scary. An absolutely astounding film - it's like a John Cassavetes film shot with the adrenaline drawn from a Michael Bay action movie... and believe every bit of the buzz: Adam Sandler is jaw-droppingly fucking excellent in this!
2. Wolf of Snow Hollow
Tumblr media
I thought this was a complete delight. Once again Jim Cummings has taken a film 'type' you THINK you know and infused it with his own very specific sense of humour to give us something that's very much delightfully off-kilter. What's more, as a sophomore directing effort, Cummings deserves all the plaudits for the massive advancement: There's action scenes and scary set-pieces that are really first rate and are way more accomplished than what you'd expect from someone only on their second movie and have never worked in the horror genre before. Cummings is REALLY funny in the lead role too but it's Robert Forster's final performance that'll break your heart. He was a hard miss anyway but this very much drives home what a great guy we've lost.
1.     The Way Back
Tumblr media
Gavin O'Connor has hit the trifecta with this, Miracle and Warrior on making a masterful sports drama and using it as a platform to 'say something' and draw a career best from a talented but under-appreciated actor (first Kurt Russell, then Nick Nolte and now Ben Affleck).
Affleck is astounding here. Fallible, real and pained. He's truly brilliant. There’s a realism to every movement he makes and every breath he exhales that only someone who has struggled with addiction will recognise. And around him is a deconstruction of the sporting underdog movie as we know it - it's only by the end that we truly realise that this has always been about the connections made through the game rather than the game itself.
Like with Warrior, you can go back and watch this umpteen times and find different strokes in the human and unspoken moments. If ever there was a secretly feel-good film for 2020 it is this – the movie that tells us that it doesn’t matter how hard or how far we fall, we are defined only by the moments in which we rise again.
And that’s that. See you all next year. Maybe ;)

Shall no one mourn the death of Seeso?
Oh Seeso. It was not so long ago that you graced our internet screens with comedy, and more comedy, and some drama. You laughed every once in a while while watching it.
Oh and then you tragically fell. The first casualty in this upcoming war approaches us. Oh! Yet no one mourned you. No one wrote long epitaphs in your honor. Well, if no one dares to do such a thing. I will fulfill that role for you Seeso. Oh you were gone too soon. A great streaming service, well a great library but we'll get to that.
Seeso, as many of you aren't totally aware of, was comedy streaming project by NBC. Given its support, it was what should have been (and this is how the story is supposed to end), the ragged upstarts breakthrough and redefine the entire generation. But it did not happen. Well, it has happened, but it did not happen in such a beautiful dramatic way, terrifying way as certainly we all hoped.
It was lead of course, by the podcasters. It was supposed to be the podcasters. Big reveal into the regular world. Of course all that stuff has been slowly seeping through. The podcasting world never got a chance to shine with its more rigorous talent. Nowhere was this more apparent than with bagillion dollar properties. Oh poor, poor sweet bajillion dollar properties. What a fallen gem you were. You were placed the Reno 911 sized hole in my heart like so few others could.
Any show that gives Paul f Tompkins a home deserves an ever-loving respect. That man is a national treasure. His mustache should be placed in the Smithsonian. His opinions on the Big Lebowski are totally off-base, but that's okay because that's his truth.
Then of course there was Harmon Quest, a great show. A fun concept based on a very popular segment of Dan Harmon's podcast, and the list goes on and on. Great comedic shows, excellent casts, perfect timing. Why oh why did this service fail? There was no reason except several very good reasons why it didn't work.
Remember when I mentioned before that it was a great library and not a great streaming service? Well this is the part that comes to. The reasons why Seeso failed as a streemong service. The first one should be obvious: it was another freaking streaming service. So the streaming history is, of course, becoming overwrought. There is too many. The market is flooded and streaming service are a lot like MMOs in that people do not really leave the one they put the most effort into.
See, it wasn't supposed to be this way. It wasn't supposed to be this way. Streaming was supposed to cheapen everything, free us from lengthy cable contracts. But I'm telling you those contracts will come back pretty soon. Shows are getting segmented, the marvel movies will be on the Disney streaming app. CBS has its own thing. Netflix will have exclusive shows. Hulu will have exclusive shows. HBO will now have exclusive shows. Amazon will have exclusive shows. I'm telling you, its coming man, its coming. There will be a company soon that packages all this crap together. There are simply too many and too few amount of money for everybody to pay for it.
There is another reason, a very practical reason. Say if you had already paid for it, like I did happily and wonderfully. I was enjoy for the 25% of the time, because the other 75%, the freaking thing didn't really work. There was always connection issues; there was always trouble.
Then the other issue - and this one is kind of a fault in design. This idea didn't work and I don't know why they did this. It was a bad, not really good well-thought out thing, is that I don't think they understood the streaming game, man. This felt clear design things of people who were slightly too old to understand or needless innovation. The needless innovation was this: Sees did not support binging. The name of the game in streaming is binging. They would play random stuff. That didn't really work. That was needless innovation for needless innovation's sake. It was difficult to operate.
So those are the fundamental reasons, probably, why it didn't work.
The other one, and this is the one that scares me. The one that I stay up all night because my favorite streaming service ever also does this. I of course talk about filmstruck. My beloved filmstruck. The one, who if it was personified as a woman, would marry on the spot and/or follow whatever dangerous cult they're plotting. And it's that Sees catered to a small specific group of people.
Now Paul F Tompkins is a genius. I love Carman Esposito and Rhea Butcher as much as any sane, logical, still-alive person can love. But I was wracking my brain recently to think of where they were ... See the thing about streaming, especially streaming exclusive things, is that you kind of need a big name. They don't all have to be big names, but you need one or two big names to be in the thing. And I would bring everybody. You know, it's the old problem of a lot of these people have critical respects or were beloved but Tompkins' of the world aren't mainstream and that sucks and I hate that they aren't. But the only way podcasts can be mainstream is if you talk about serial killers but comedy stuff - the meat and bones of what podcasts do and just not doing it. I don't know why. And they're all really funny. Maybe it's because they're probably an hour long.
Anytime I try to talk people into listening to podcasts ... Its like two hours long. But dude, what do you gotta do for like two hours. It's a commitment and you kind of have to commit to this idea, but you end up enjoying it, lovingly. So maybe Sees was never destined to survive, not with the technical issues I brought up, but maybe it was just a brief shining light in this sad world. Part of me fears that it wasn't the glorious crowning of this great comedy movement. Part of me fears that it was instead the final gasp of it. It's time now. The new generation must be coming up around this point, influenced by podcasters more than anything.
I recently took a class at UCB, and there were a lot of people, including myself, there who were fans of this type of comedy. Seeso might have been the end of the ... maybe a brave new world is upon us. Maybe its Instagram comedians. Or maybe it will great new things. I dunno. The world is new and scary and some of the change is really bad, like super duper bad like "Oh my god why did this happen?" Some of the change is good. Maybe we're all relics now. Maybe it's their turn, whoever they are. But Seeso was there and it was fun for a brief point. And I just think that should be talked about at least once. To be mourned, for walls to be banged against, for chairs to be thrown. Ugh. For somebody to write on their Tumblr "Ugh, all the feels right now." Something. Anything. Don't let this just be a cry in the night, man

Title: Morena: Audition Published: May 13, 2017 | 12:27am Description:
☾♔; Dragon and Devil Audition Template A TEMPLATE A
::Things to check before auditioning:: Rules + How To: https://goo.gl/188C0h BÃ thory Rules: https://goo.gl/vwKdK6 Roles: https://goo.gl/wuuynA
---x---
Your Name: Telperion Username: @/cassinixii
Role Being Auditioned for: Morena
Other roles you're interested in: (can be however many you want, but ranked in order of most to least preferred please) The Impaler Prince, Rusalka, the Zorja
---x---
OC Name: Morena Rothenstern (she's had a couple aliases over the ages, but has gone back to using Morena. Rothenstern has a different reason though) Age: a couple centuries. maybe 1000 years. long enough that she can't remember, nor does she care to Nationality: Russian probably. Definitely an Eastern Slav, but again, so long ago, she can't remember. She was around before Kievan Rus. Occupation: none (unless you count immortal witch god)
Personality: (can be jot notes, like -, or +/-, or paragraphs) Manipulative + Obsessive + Intelligent + Sarcastic + Aggressive + Disobedient + Solitary + Brooding + Loyal + Passionate + Cruel + Wise +
Powers: a lot, kinda rushing through this now to meet the deadline, but basically her powers are a cross of Nimueh, Morgause, and Merlin. I'll elaborate properly if I get her, but I'm including the power over life and death thing, just need to adapt it to slavic-ness.
Talents and/or Skills: - piano - sword fighting - an insanely long list of languages
Likes: - strong women who could potentially kick her kabouse - silly words like kabouse - precious gems like emeralds and diamonds
Dislikes: - the darkness of human nature - betrayers/double-crossers - coffee
Bio/Background: Morena can't remember when she was born, even if she was born, whether she had parents or siblings, none of that. Her earliest memory is of watching the sun rise over an icy plain with Dažbog. Morena has lived through entire civilizations, and was endlessly fascinated by humans repeating the same mistakes over and over, though she became exhausted around the 20th century, having seen the same atrocities repeated over and over with more intensity and cruelty.
She's cultivated many aliases over the centuries, as well as the reputations of the various aliases. In the 16-17th centuries she went by the name "Desislava" and held a reputation for being a dark witch and a deer, which drew the attention of Elizabeth Bathory's keepers and she sealed the countess into the earth beneath the castle in which she committed her crimes. It was during the Victorian era that she first came into contact with the order and joined them following the disappearance of one Jack the Ripper, and has assisted in maintaining the order of the supernatural world.
Song you think most exemplifies your character (can be soundtrack or a vocal track): Space by Slavko Kalezić Also (and don't judge me) I don't wanna live forever by Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik (yes the movie is total utter awfulness, but it's a good song)  Traits they value in other people: - intelligence - determination - nobility of character, not literal noble blood  What do they fear?: eternity, she doesn't want to live forever, it'd be terribly boring, and she'd either have to live in isolation or continue to watch everyone she comes to love die. She's also worried about forgetting and losing more memories.
What or whom do they cherish/treasure?: - "Figchen" aka Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg, and later, Екатерина II Великая, Catherine II of Russia aka Catherine the Great - herself  Other: N/A
Preferred Faceclaim: Alicia Vikander Why you think they are suited to the role/your character: because she's a truly fantastic actress, whether it be Caroline-Matilda of Great Britain, the AI Ava or Lara Croft, Alicia can play it all with a fantastic ability to draw us all in.
Back-up Faceclaim: Noémie Schmidt Why you think they are suited to the role/your character: eh, just cause Henriette is bae. ... To the max.
Bonus: why do you think the group is titled Dragon and Devil? Correct answers will receive 15 bonus points (I will keep track of them in OneNote, but won't reveal the answer until phase one auditions end. It's not too difficult, but may require a tiny bit of googling). Dracul means both Dragon and Devil? A reference to Vlad II, who was known as Vlad the Dragon, and his son Vlad III, known as the Vlad the Devil? Or something like that, maybe a reference to some super obscure anime?
