I’ve been rereading the current anime arc in the manga, and finally got to The Apology™️, and I wondered what words Katsuki used before translation.

Disclaimer: I’m sure others must have posted about this before but I couldn’t recall reading it myself. I do remember there was a lot of talk about the way he used “gomen” as the Japanese fandom were saying how cute and childlike it sounded, so I thought I’d see if there was anything else interesting there.

Oh, my sweet sweet baby boy…

So, just before he says ‘Sorry for everything’ (ima made gomen), he says:

言ってどうにかなるもんじゃねェけど

本音だ

“Itte dōnika naru mon ja nē kedo… Honne da…Izuku”

Which in the English translation, gave us:

And “speak my truth” is lovely and all, but the word from the original that stuck out for me was ‘honne’.

I’m not sure how familiar most people are with honne–tatemae (I only know about it because I go way way too in-depth when researching for my fics lol), but it’s a concept that every Japanese person is deeply aware of, and underpins much of their society.

Here’s the Wikipedia intro:

Ohhh, that is some extra juicy context for Kacchan’s speech. Essentially, he is saying that everything up until now has been his tatemae, a public façade to protect his own position (strong, powerful hero etc), but that he can’t keep that up and he wants Izuku to see his honne, his true, private self.

Excuse me while I melt from the cuteness.

But WAIT! There’s more!

How much do you know about second-person pronouns in Japanese? (Nope, this isn’t about ‘kare’ again this time hehe).

You’ve probably noticed in the anime that Kacchan says “Temee” a lot, and you may have also noticed that it tends to get translated as cursing. So it actually just means ‘you,’ but like a really rude way of saying it, such that the only way of reflecting that in English is to replace ‘you’ with something like Bastard or Asshole.

This and the below are from a very excellent article about second-person pronouns and how they are used for context and drama in anime specifically. I’d recommend reading it as the context is really interesting!

So although pronouns aren’t actually commonly used or necessary in much spoken Japanese, when they are used, it’s a deliberate way to tell you about the relationship dynamic between two characters.

But why, you may ask, am I talking about pronouns again?!

Because, dear friends, throughout the first half of his speech, Kacchan uses ‘temee’ as usual to describe his past with Izuku. I’ve highlighted it below, and pls also note the shaky speech bubble showing his nerves during the ‘honne’ section. 🥺

HOWEVER, straight after he says he wants Izuku to see his Honne, Katsuki switches pronouns from ‘Temee’ (v rude), to ‘Omae’ (very casual/familiar). Below is the page after the apology.

Considering we now know pronouns are not necessary to convey meaning, that’s a hell of a lot of omaes on one page!! Boy cannot get enough of saying it.

If you want more about the different pronouns, see below for a helpful table of common uses for both. And please indulge my shippy heart for highlighting the second usage (but, like ‘kare’, you never know)…

Katsuki is showing Izuku immediately and repeatedly that this is who he wants to be to him and how he wants the world to see them. His honne, his inner desire, is to be close to Izuku, to treat him as an equal.

He’s not just saying sorry, he’s showing that—at least from his perspective—things are going to be different from now on. But, like, also, that this was how he felt about him in private the whole time?! GAHHHH.

So there you go, the apology that was already a massive turning point in their story/relationship was actually even deeper and more beautiful than we all thought. Yet again, Japanese conveys nuance and intention far beyond what can be translated. 😭💕

Random Midnight Ghost Hunt Thoughts

So I said earlier morning yesterday that SPR gang is well-rounded found family, and to further elaborate on that, I’m going to word vomit about how it’s such an awesome group of ghost hunters. Everyone has something to bring into the table:

Bou-san -> Buddhism

Ayako -> Shintoism/Doctor

Masako -> Mediumship/Sort of Shamanism

John -> Catholicism

Lin -> Onmyoudou (or, more aptly, Taoism)

Naru -> Parapsychology/Psychic Researcher

Mai and Yasuhara are like the odd ones out, but Mai can be considered a budding psychic researcher too. Yasuhara isn’t a psychic but he can offer some smart & out-of-the-box opinions, so he can be the objective mediator. The beauty of this found family is that they managed to bridge the gap between different set of religious & paranormal beliefs into a working relationship where everyone’s different skills complement one another. Everyone is given ways for their exorcisms and or abilities to shine. And they all nurtured respect for one another’s skills/beliefs as time goes by.

Naru with his empirical method also helps ground the group in a way that there is balance. He’s there to question people’s perception & beliefs as well as test them and how they hold up. Mai is already perceptive and observant, and she works very well to complement Naru’s different perspectives as well as challenge everyone’s biases with her intuition.

Oh and actually there’s one thing Mai can be a good source of: URBAN LEGENDS. When we were first introduced to Mai, it’s clear she likes horror storytelling & is very good at it. Throughout the series, we can tell that she’s very knowledgeable about horror stories and the occult. It’s a pastime, but with that, it’s also a solid start for psychic research; she already has the curiosity and interest for the paranormal. Adding theoretical knowledge that Naru brings, it’s like an ontological process for her.

Overall, our beloved SPR gang is a jackpot gathering in itself because it’s like a team of geniuses at some point, cracking the hardest paranormal cases in Japan. Just can’t help but further appreciate Ono-sensei’s creativity as well as radical(?) view of having an inter-religious dialogue in the form of characters in a light novel back in the 1980s. Until now, I don’t think there’s ever been a story as accepting of different religious & paranormal beliefs as Ghost Hunt tbh.

And that’s why it lives in my mind rent-free too XD

What’s this about koro Q and karmagisa?

Okay strap yourself in. This became a Karma sexuality meta. warning for koro q spoilers.

This centres around Bitch Sensei and her 'charm' ability. Note that Nagisa 'charms' (read: he doesn't actually, everyone just thought he was hot) 3E in chapter two, but what I'm talking about here is the sort of mind-control ability, which is consistently represented by a heart around the head.

This section of the panel speaks clearly. You can only be charmed if you're attracted to women. Hell, "are you gay" is right there (I don't have access to the Japanese rn so I can't double check the exact wording).

We see later that Karasuma is unaffected. Again, I can't check the exact wording right now, but I imagine the original Japanese is pretty similar. I think here, the implication is that Karasuma is somewhere on the ace spectrum.

We get to a point in the chapter where all the 3E men are enchanted. It works on EVERYONE except Karma and Nagisa. Now why might that be, hm? So at this point, the inference we can take from this is that neither of them are attracted to women.

(okay, Korosensei was pretending to be infected, but he has magic big bad powers so he doesn't count)

She even throws them off a tower for it. Maybe Irina moonlights a writer for the CW.

Amazingly they still continue to argue about it when everyone's safe. They address that it's a little abnormal for Karasuma to not have been affected. But... Karma and Nagisa are just stood there, in the same boat, and this is never addressed. Interesting.

So that's Evidence One, right.

So Evidence Two, which is the juicy bit, is actually on the last ever page of Koro Q. And lemme tell you, I bought this book the day it came out (physically, in Japan) and my jaw dropped. Yet nobody really knows about it and it's honestly upsetting.

Basically, Nagisa says something wholesome and Okajima and Mimura are like 'oh no he's hot'. Which I mean, Nagisa's adorable I can't blame the guys. What's important to note is that they use the exact same design as with Bitch Sensei, which implies it follows similar rules.

But then we get to the holy panel.

Yes, Karma is infatuated. With Nagisa. Official adjacent material where Karma is explicitly attracted to Nagisa. I think it's pretty obvious why this is kind of a big deal. And also why I headcanon him as gay nowadays.

But, you might point out, he said he liked Okuda in Kyoto!

...Okay what you have to understand about Japanese is it's reaaaaally vague and contextual sometimes. So when you translate the meaning to English, it comes off with a slightly different nuance. In other words, I think it's a little stronger with implied romance in English.

Maehara says "Ki ni naru ko iru?" which is translated as 'is there a girl you're interested in?'. And yes, this is accurate, but even despite the obvious context the phrase 'ki ni naru' can also mean 'to care about', 'feel anxious about', or even interest in a non-romantic way. So there's that to contend with.

Either way though, Karma's reasoning is that she can make him chloroform or something. What he actually says in a nutshell is like 'the scope of my schemes can widen'. I don't reaaaally take that as much of a romantic admission. I stan their friendship though, to be clear.

TLDR, that tangent aside, to me at least this is the single (close to) canon 'no way of denying it' instance of Karma being attracted to anybody. And it's glorious. Hence, Karmagisa is at least half canon in Koro Q.

I say half because we never get any kind of confirmation that Nagisa likes Karma. All we know is he's not straight.

(I mean, there's also that time where the uh official card game chose to promote an event with shirtless Karma and Nagisa posed beside each other, and Isogai looking fucking horrified. They made it worse when, in the game, a line I can only translate as "what do you want to do with me Karma?" appeared beside said shirtless image of Nagisa).

Shingo’s messed up big time! The Sailor Guardians decide to take a well-earned break from all that Youma-fighting with a trip to a luxury pension! Unfortunately, Rei was more focused on the bargain price of the booking, and less concerned with the pension’s horror-movie theme. The cheap scares have Usagi petrified, but as Ami learns more about the owner’s shy young daughter, they suspect not all the horrors in this house are fictional…

HELLO!! Sorry this is so late, Work has been kind of occupying a lot of my time recently (Christmas in Retail in not fun) but I'm really excited to finally answer this and to talk a bit about Puppy Love! so without further ado...

Zelda is going through a lot in this chapter, so let's break it down beat by beat.

At the beginning she is... I think the best word would be humiliated. Not as in "Link has maliciously made her feel bad." but in the sense of "She has made a fool of herself." During her time in Ordon she's sort of built up this romance in her head - or that's what she's telling herself. She always knew she was going to have to leave and go back to Castleton at some point because Work[tm] but she had been purposefully trying not to think about it. She has been indulging in playing out a little country romance.

Now I feel the need to clarify this by saying that Zelda has complicated feelings surrounding relationships and what's expected of her. I won't go too in depth because it'll come up in a future fic (if I every actually get round to writing it) so the TLDR is this: For the first time in a while Zelda has felt like she wants to pursue a romantic relationship with someone. However, she has convinced herself that Link doesn't actually reciprocate these feelings.

In her mind, she's let herself get comfortable with the idea of going on dates with the cute country vet. She's started to daydream about getting to know him better and getting to be known by him. She wants, for the first time in a long time, she wants.

But the timing is off.

So when we see her at the beginning of this chapter, standing in the rain and muttering to herself, she's actually giving herself a bit of a telling off. "So you don't get to be the main character in a cheesy romance novel. Grow up. It's okay. You're going to be okay"

(Also, just as we see that Link has a plan for their final meeting "Bring the medicine, check on the dog, see Zelda, say goodbye to Zelda, try to be charming so Zelda doesn’t think he’s weird, manage a suave goodbye so the last memory she has of him won’t be him having to run off to deal with a goat emergency, and then leave." Zelda ALSO had one. "Take Naru to the vets for a check up, see Link, show that I can be a normal person who doesn't start crying over my dog eating a chocolate cake or an earring, be cute and charming so his last memory of me isn't fumblingly trying to ask for his number, and leave" - only when Zelda went to the surgery she saw that he wasn't there and, well, that scuppered that plan.)

So she's a little preoccupied with trying to sort out her dog and her luggage and her emotions when Dr Wolfe shows up out of nowhere!

 “What an unexpected surprise” she said, feigning a smile “I’d offer you in for a cup of coffee but as you can see I’m…” she trailed off, eyes casting down to look at her feet.

She fully wasn't expecting to see him. She was dealing with the fact that she wasn't going to get a proper goodbye from him and then dealing with the fact that she maybe shouldn't be allowed to be upset about that because they've only met a handful of times and it's not like she means anything to him.

But he's here, with her prescription, which causes the little hopeful voice she's been trying to smother to pipe up and say "maybe he wants you to stay as much as you want to stay?"

And then he mentions that he's just doing his job.

Now we get to see Link's thoughts here but Zelda doesn't have that luxury. We know that it's just an excuse to see her again but... well.

“Of course,” she murmured, shoulders drooping a little as if the idea that he was only there for business hurt her in some way. 

It hurts. In the small moments before, she lets herself think that there is something else here, that maybe he might actually like her back, but those are dashed and the "reasonable" part of her says "of course he's doing something nice, he's a good person. You're not special."

After that they fall into their little back and forth before it's time to for her to actually leave.

“Link…” she started, [...] She looked like she wanted to say something more, her thoughts visibly dancing in her eyes. He wanted to ask her what was on her mind, to get her to open up to him. She worked up the courage to speak, a large intake of breath to steady her thoughts. And as she spoke he knew it wasn’t all that she wanted to say.

“Thank you.”

Zelda wants, in this moment, to stay. She doesn't want to go without at least making sure that Link is partially aware of her feelings. She wants to say "I'll miss you" she wants to ask "Can I come back?" or "Would you like it if I came back?" or "Is there a place for me here in Ordon with you? do I have something to come back for?". She wants to tell him that he's made her time in Ordon a happy one, that getting to meet him has made her feel things that she hasn't felt in years. But all she can make herself say is "Thank you."

Thank you for looking out for Naru. Thank you for comforting me. Thank you for playing fetch in the park with us and bringing us the medicine and just being so kind and lovely and You!

And then it's over. Link gives her the jar with the goat's milk and wishes her well and then it's goodbye. She gets into the taxi and drives off fully believing that she has missed her last chance at a romance with Dr Link Wolfe. Her biggest what if.

Thank you so much for this ask! It was a real pleasure to get to talk about Puppy Love and Zelda again. I promise I am working on the sequel but Retail at Christmas! so hopefully 2024 is the year we see these two finally go on their first date haha!

That guy… He has no consideration for anything whatsoever. In fact, he had decided for Izumi to go to his studio and meet up with him… Yeah, that fashion designer hasn’t changed one bit and he was so annoying to deal with! He could’ve declined but even the model knew that this would backfire. Why? Because said fashion designer would find a way to push Izumi into whatever he had planned or even show up in person. He was a lot to deal with… Ramuda Amemura.

Honestly, even having met the guy for the very first time Izumi was not sure what to think of the guy. For one, he looked like a kid, just as tall as one. Secondly, no matter what he made sure to present himself in the best possible mood. It was a little irritating to be honest. One could throw any possible insult at him and he would just shake it off easily. Sometimes it even fell onto deaf ears. Was there really such a person or was he just keeping up appearances? It was hard to say. Though perhaps that made it also so irritating. Amemura was hard to predict as a result. No one could be sure what was going on in his head. And yet, he seemed to have his methods to get his way. Not just that but he has made a name for himself…

Empty Candy, Amemura is the owner of this label. A label well known in the fashion world. Amemura focuses on women's fashion yet he has taken commissions for all sorts of things, wanting to expand his range and try out new things. People go crazy for his designs, women especially… Well, that and women seem to also go crazy over him. That was no secret and something one could learn pretty quickly about that guy. 

In any case, Amemura was a well known name and Izumi heard it more than enough these days. Not just from Naru–Chan who seems to almost eat up his designs and hopes that she will get to wear one of Amemura’s dresses yet again but Empty Candy was literally plastered everywhere these days. It rose pretty quickly in popularity and was now more than well respected in the fashion world. 

And if that wasn’t enough… Izumi was an unfortunate soul who had stayed in contact with Amemura. Like it or not, contacts are important and Amemura had become a big shot in no time. So it would be best to make sure to stay on… Decent terms. Then again, not as if Izumi had to put up an act. He had slipped once towards Amemura and yelled at him. 

But how had that been met? With a laugh. “ Haha! You’re pretty interesting Izumi~! ” He had said with an unapologetic smile.

“ Hah!? D… Did you just call me— ”

“ Yeah, I did. You don’t mind me calling you Izumi, right? Of course you don’t! ”

“ Hey! Don’t put words in my mouth! Ugh… You’re so annoying Amemura… ”

“ Hehe, I’ll take that as a compliment~ ” 

That was the type of person Amemura was unfortunately. And Izumi had to keep up with this, whether he liked it or not. He obviously didn’t but what else could he do? 

In any case, that would not change the fact that the young model would soon arrive at the studio of Amemura and knock. Oh he was praying that this was just all forgotten or it would get canceled last minute. But alas… Luck was not on Izumi’s side that day.

Because only a few seconds after the knock the door would open and a tiny, male figure would stand right in the entrance. Pink, fluffy hair, a turquoise hoodie which looked a little oversized… Not to mention the red bowtie. And not just that but the figure also wore the belt as if it was a tail, having it hang right down there and being so close to hitting the ground. Usually people would call it a mess but… Honestly, if anyone could make it work, it was Amemura. If there was one thing Izumi could give him credit for, it was that this guy just made anything work. Even if it was a total disaster… In Amemura’s hands it would look fantastic! A rare skill to have.

“Ah, Izumi. Hello. Took you long enough!” The smaller one of the two said yet sounded more upbeat than upset. He then hopped to the side, as if asking for the model to enter. “This way~”

“You made me come here you know…” Izumi couldn’t help but sigh yet stepped inside the studio. He had been there a few times and looking around… Yeah, it looked the same as always. Colorful, having all sorts of objects standing right inside. Even some which were completely unrelated to the work of a designer, like a jukebox for example. But there were also several mannequins standing around, some wearing dresses while others were pretty much naked. And in the middle? A small coffee table with a sofa and two armchairs. Well, that might be necessary for conversations… As for one of the corners, there was a table filled with all sorts of papers, pencils and… Well, a lot of things are used for sketching. Amemura has an… Interesting workspace, to say the least. But that was beside the point right now…

“Sorry sorry, but it’s super urgent.” Amemura explained, tone not changing in any way. “Sit down! You want anything? Coffee with sweets maybe?”

“Just coffee… Nothing in it.” Izumi had no choice or he would not hear the end of it. So he responded with that while sitting down. But even that answer had Amemura almost peeved.

“Eh? Not even a cupcake or something?”

“I have to watch my calories…”

“A bit of sweets never hurt anyone though!”

“No thanks.”

“Alright, coffee as bitter as you it is~”

“Why you…” But comments like these were useless. And besides, they did nothing to stop Amemura in the slightest. He would just keep going.

So, a few more minutes passed and the both of them were facing another by sitting in one armchair each. All while Amemura was stuffing his face with a shortcake, taking a rather large bite out of it. Not just that but there was soon cream all over his face. It was sometimes easy to forget that the guy eating sweets like a little kid was the older one of the two. 

Regardless, a quick sip out of the coffee cup and he finally got to ask: “So? Why did you even bother calling me here?” It better be a good excuse…

A bit of chewing, Amemura looking at Izumi in slight confusion for a moment before it seemed to have suddenly come to him, making him swallow what was in his mouth and then he would speak up again. “Ah, right! I wish it was just wanting to talk to you but… I need you to help me out.”

“Me? Help you? With what?”

Amemura placed down the plate with the cake as well as the fork, then wiped off the cream with a handkerchief he had lying nearby, then continued to speak. All while the model was trying to drink up the coffee while it was still hot. “So so, it’s about a job offer I accepted. I need your feedback on some clothes I’m going to design.”

“Hah? You of all people need my help for that?” The model couldn’t believe his ears. The fashion designer of Empty Candy, needing help!?

“Yeah, that’s right. You see, I accepted a job I’ve never done before. They want me to design clothes for some idols.”

“And what makes it so different?”

“Haha, well… It’s men's fashion for one. But secondly, I just want feedback from someone who is working right in the industry. And you were the first person who came to my mind.”

Aha… So that was what was going on… One could say a lot about Amemura but at least he took his job seriously. “So that’s why…” Izumi mumbled, to rather t himself than anything before placing the empty cup down onto the table. It was still surreal, being asked by Amemura to help out with something which he assumed would be no problem. And yet… “Since you probably won’t take ‘no’ for an answer… Fine, I’ll help out.”

“Really? Thank you! I knew I could count on you!”

“Hey, did you even listen wha—”

“Oh oh! And try some on too! I need to know how they look on an actual idol!” Amemura hopped off the armchair by then, seeming to be overly enthusiastic. Not just that but he already hurried to the closet nearby, as if looking for some outfit already!

“You want me to model for you too!?”

“May as well.” 

“You’re unbelievable…” Why was that the least bit surprising though? Amemura will never change. “Mind telling me who hired you to begin with? If I help you out you may as well tell me.”

“Hm? Oh, right. Sure sure~” He responded, seeming not to care all that much before turning back around, having one of the outfits in hand. A rather… Flashy one. Then again, which idol outfit is not flashy? Although the answer,,, As for who had hired Amemura to design a set of outfits for idols…

Let’s just finish this off by saying that Izumi wished to have never asked this question. Because… Honestly, go figure it out yourself if you already haven’t. It should be more than obvious by now.

You were captivated by her beauty from the moment that you laid eyes on her.

She shone under the stage lights that illuminated her. Perhaps she truly was a star, one that lit the entire room up with just her mere presence. From the way that she carried herself with confidence & elegance, to her beautiful voice, everything about her in that moment was just...

"Stellar..." you breathed out.

"Oh?" (F/N) piped up from next to you. "Does (NAME) have a favorite unit now?"

Ignoring your friend's subtle teasing remark, you continued watching the performance from the idol unit onstage. Knights... that was their name.

According to your friend, Knights was an idol unit at Yumenosaki, the school that they attended. Although you weren't a Yumenosaki student, your friend smuggled you in (barely, with the amount of close calls that they had) to watch an idol live.

Your head spun with each word that came out of (F/N)'s mouth. Dazzle... shine... perform... This was...

"Strange..."

"Huh?!" (F/N) pretended to be wounded, placing a dramatic hand to their chest. "No, no, no, (NAME), you're wrong about that! While kidnappings are common at my school—"

"Kidnappings?!" you placed a hand over your mouth in shock.

"Wait, disregard that! (NAME), please forget what I saiiiiid...!"

"Okay, okay, I'll forget it...! That's still concerning though..." you mumbled the last part, although you were certain that (F/N) heard it anyways.

"...So it's nothing like Cirque du Soleil is what you're trying to say," you deadpanned.

"Yeah, but— well, just take my word for it, okay?! It's super interesting, and...!" (F/N) suddenly looked as if a mental lightbulb went off in their head. They began to dig through their bag on the floor, in search of god-knows-what.

"Um...?" You stared at your friend with an expression of half-concern and half-amusement at the sudden change in demeanor.

"Here they are...!" (F/N) pulled two paper strips out of their bag, handing one to you.

"A... ticket?"

"Yes! This is for one of Yumenosaki's veteran idol units, Knights!"

"Knights..." you echoed, reading over the ticket that (F/N) just gave you.

"This is for their next live! I can sneak you in~♪"

"What?!" you exclaimed, eyes darting from the ticket to (F/N)'s excited face. "Nonono, you're not going to do th—"

"But I am! See? It's on a weekend, so you'd be free!" (F/N) stated matter-of-factly.

You didn't even know how to respond to that one. Despite your overwhelming silence, (F/N) continued. "Besides~ you need to live a little, (NICKNAME)! You're always working hard, so why not treat yourself this once?"

You inhaled and exhaled, weighing your options.

"Well..."

Here you were, two weeks later. The idol unit Knights was wrapping up their live, although it wasn't like you noticed. Tunnel vision was one way to describe how you felt about the pretty blonde-haired girl. Smitten was another (although it wasn't like you'd admit it).

She was just so... ethereal. You didn't even know her name, but at the same time, you were absolutely enthralled by her performance. Beauty goes a long way, yes, but this girl... she seemed different.

The way she danced and sang was so confident, youthful, and graceful all at once. God, you were enamored by her.

"So? How was it?" (F/N)'s words brought you back down to earth from your inner monologues. "Did you like it~?"

You merely nodded in response. Your heart felt like it was on fire from the performance. That was the most fun that I've had in a long time, you mused to yourself.

"So..." (F/N) twiddled their thumbs, drawing out the last letter of the word. "Seems like their Arashi has caught your attention?"

"Arashi...?" you asked. Could it be that her name was Arashi?

"Yeah, the blonde-haired one! You really couldn't keep your eyes off of her~"

"Was it really that obvious?" you responded, suddenly feeling awfully flustered. If it was noticeable enough for (F/N), someone that was obsessed with dissecting Knights performances, then did that mean that this 'Arashi' noticed too...?

"Your eyes were on her the entire time, y'know? Looks like we have totally different taste, (NAME)~" (F/N) teased before launching into rambling about that 'Suou' kid, presumably the red-haired one.

Knights... what an interesting unit. Maybe they're right. Living a little couldn't hurt... it seems like you'll have to take (F/N)'s advice more often (and ask them to smuggle you in again).

"Hey, are you even listening?!"

A soft smile makes its way across your face. "Maybe."

"Well, you better be! If you're gonna attend the next Knights live with me, you'll need to know everything, from image colors to fan chants!"

Midori: Waaah… I don’t wanna… do that.

Eichi: Fufu. You mustn't give up now, Takamine-kun. We're far past the point of no return.

Now then, let's hear the tale of everyone's first love, shall we? The one who shall start us off... is Mao, as mandated by the former Student Council President to the current.

Mao: Huh?! M-Me first?! Please don't abuse your authority like that~...

Um... First love, huh... I don't really have an interesting story like that.

When I was in kindergarden, there was a super kind teacher who’d always care for me… And I was extremely attached to them.

Leo: Mm~, the moment we met, we clicked instantly... I wonder if that's the moment I fell in love~?

Keito: Oh? Considering it’s you who’s telling the story, that’s unexpectedly quite romantic. Was it the employee working there? Or was it a customer?

Leo: Wahahaha! ☆ That's right! It was a super romantic meeting! Ah, such beauty I did behold, I couldn't stop myself from reaching out—

Mao: Whoa! You actually reached out and grabbed her?!

Leo: Yeah, so what? Got a problem with it?

Mao: Rather than just a problem, I think there's plenty of problems with it..

Leo: Anyway, listen up. The moment we touched, a clear sound rang in my ears— and that was the first time I’d ever played the C key! And that! That moment! Was the moment I fell in love with music!

Mao: What the hell! What a waste of time! And I was so invested, too...!

Leo: What d'you mean, a waste of time?! How dare you mock the memory of my first love! Grrrrr!

Keito: Haaah. In a way, that story was very much like you. The last one to go is Eichi, surely you won’t pull off something like making everyone tell theirs and refrain from telling yours?

Eichi: Perish the thought, Keito. I'll do as Narukami-kun asked of us and tell all, as well.

My own first love... is "yet to come".

Keito: You bastard… Do you plan on fleeing like that on your own?

Eichi: What else am I supposed to say? It isn't as if I had much of a mind for love while growing up, being as in and out of the hospital as I was.

Ah, but perhaps... It isn't too much of an exaggeration to say that the dreadful yearning I felt towards what anyone would call "a healthy body" would be my own version of falling in love.

Mao: Seriously?! Don't you think that's a little unfair after everything we've confessed?

Eichi: At best, you could call my younger years dull. Nonetheless, that is all I have to say. Thanks to your bittersweet reminiscences, however... I feel as if I was able to taste the very flavor of youth. ♪

First Impressions/Foreign Tongue

Chapter 6: Hanasemasen

Summary: There's trouble... in Tokyo.

“Toky-whoa!” Beast Boy exclaimed as soon as the black energy surrounding them dissipated. 

Raven had teleported the Titans directly onto a busy sidewalk in downtown Tokyo, and colorful lights and interesting aromas barraged them from all sides. Skyscrapers stretched to the cosmos above them, and on the street, a stream of cyclists whizzed past. More than a few people had stopped to stare at the Titans sudden appearance, and a couple had taken out cell phones.

Starfire and Cyborg were staring this way and that like a pair of owls, and Beast Boy had whipped out a second disposable camera, but Robin still had his nose buried in a guidebook.

“So, where to now?” Raven asked him.

“The roughest part of town is in the Shinjuku district,” said Robin. “We'll start our search there.”

“Okay, which way is that?” Cyborg asked.

Robin scowled, and finally closed the book. “I don’t know. I can’t read the signs.”

Cyborg brightened, but before he could do anything, Beast Boy loudly proclaimed: “No problem-o, we’ll just ask for directions.” 

He strolled up to an unsuspecting old man in a neatly pressed business suit and tapped his shoulder. The man folded up his newspaper and did a slight double take when he saw the green teen peering up at him.

“Um, hi. How do I get to Shinjuku?”

The man cleared his throat. “Ee. Sumimasen. Eigo ga wakaranain desu, tasukete wo rigari naru na.”

Beast Boy nodded attentively the whole time the man was speaking. 

“Uh-huh...mmm-hmm...okay, thanks.”

The man tipped his hat, and Beast Boy nipped back to the group. “I… have no idea what he said,” he confessed. 

Raven facepalmed.

Cyborg put an arm in front of BB. “Let me handle this.”

He walked up to the same man, then spoke into his arm. “Excuse me sir, can you tell us how to get to Shinjuku district?”

Cyborg’s arm beeped, and then a tinny version of his voice emerged from a hidden speaker: [Sumimasen, Shinjuku chiku e no ikikata o oshiete itadakemasen ka.]

The man’s eyes widened. He leaned forward and spoke hesitantly into Cyborg’s arm like it was a mic. “Kyoo mo kootsuu ruuru wo mamoru yo.”

[I will obey all the traffic laws.]

Cyborg sighed. “Doumo arigatou,” he said. The crosswalk light turned green then, and the businessman hurried away.

“My new technology might still need some tweaking…” Cyborg admitted.

“It is okay, friends!” Starfire proclaimed. “We have Raven to translate for us.” She smiled at Raven.

“Um, Star… I don’t speak Japanese.”

“You do not?” Star was taken aback. This had never happened before. “Oh…” she said. “Then I guess, I will be the translator.” 

Raven was too embarrassed to notice the disappointment in Star’s voice.

Starfire looked around. There was an earthling boy with blue hair, more or less the same age as her friends, watching them from outside a cafe. She walked up to him.

“May I kiss you?” She asked, enunciating clearly. 

The boy stared up at her with wide, starry eyes and gulped. Starfire could visibly see the gesture, because the boy had what Beast Boy called an “atoms apple” and it bobbed down and back up. 

“Kiss kiss fall in love?” the boy asked breathily.

“No, just kiss,” Starfire said.

They stared at each other.

“Ou-kay,” said the boy.

Starfire leaned down and kissed him.

There was the familiar rush of a new language filling her lungs, but otherwise, it was not very pleasant. The taste of his mouth surprised her - it was tangy and salty. She’d grown to believe that all earthlings tasted like honey and green tea. 

She pulled away. 

[Please forgive me, I learn language through kissing. Could you tell me which way to Shinjuku district?]

The boy pointed. [That way.]

Starfire bowed. It seemed like the appropriate thing to do. “Doumo arigatou.”

“Daisuki.”

Starfire ignored that last comment and gestured to her team. “This way.”

She turned and started walking without checking to see if they would follow. She was eager to be away from the youth she had just kissed. The youth whom, she now realized, she hadn’t even asked for a name. It hadn’t been that bad of a kiss, really. It’s not like she had kissed Glgrdsklechhh. And yet, all nine of her stomachs were roiling all the same. She especially did not want to look at Raven right now. Would she be proud of her for remembering to ask permission first? Or would she be upset? Why did Starfire hope she would be upset?

Her thoughts were interrupted by screaming. 

“Nigeru! Taihen da! Kaibutsu ga densen o kitteru zo!”

The people around them suddenly began to point and run.

What are they saying?” asked Raven. Her voice was smoothly monotone, giving nothing away.

Starfire cleared her throat. "They are saying… ‘Run! The monster is attacking the power lines!’"

Robin whipped out his bo staff. “Titans! Go!”

hi 👀 i was the kpop album anon. if ur willing to share i would love to see/hear about ur list! i love when people talk about their albums/interests/etc!

HIIIIIIIIIIIIIII hehe <3 this is going to be a bit long i'm sorry in advance ... but I started buying kpop albums in like. my last year of middle school maybe?? back when i was still living in belgium (and those are still at my parents' house with my later purchases when we moved to spain). so i don't have my full collection here!! i'll still mention the full one just bc i can and bc some of my personal favourites are back there and not with me rn, but!!

my criteria for buying albums changed a lot with time i think!! nowadays i mainly buy albums if i really like the way it looks (the packaging) and/or when i know i will enjoy the photobook (mostly if i really loved the concept pics for a given version!) . or if i Really want some of the inclusions (i'm currently debating buying the upcoming nmixx album because im absolutely in love with the silly little fluffy keychain guy that comes with the ? limited edition i think...) . i used to often buy any album of a group i was REALLY into (and thus my skz collection despite not really being into their music as much anymore, for example), though, or albums that i really liked from a musical standpoint (which is why i am...the owner of a jay park album....................,)

what's also interesting to mention is that before i ever started buying kpop albums i WAS buying jpop albums, actually!! my collection of those isn't as huge (in part bc they're way more expensive, and in part because i pretty much stopped getting those soon after getting into kpop). so. if u'll allow me. i'll add these to this post as well.... they're still v important to me </3

now i wanna be a little annoying and talk about them sorry . first of all, currently on display are these: (as well as my cravity photobook and one of my victon the future is now albums on other shelves).

unsure how to talk about every album individually without being super annoying so. being annoying will have to do. but soooo . starting with what i have Here at my place.

my entire skz collection is currently in a box, but i am you was my first album purchase after i moved here, from my trusty kpop store (musica i love u). i really, really love the way its cover looks!!! most skz photobooks are varying from boring to ugly (so do the packagings, since go live)(it all started going downhill with god's menu i'm sorry to be saying this but it's true), but i quite like this one and the levanter one!!! and the mixtape album is also cute in a way!

i also really like the nostalgia album (and so does my mom, btw, which i can't say about most of my photobooks sadly). the way the box is cut also made it perfect to help me display one postcard at a time on my display shelf for a while lol also i really love this album from a musical standpoint! i remember looping it a lot in my compsci labs . . . the other two victon albums i pre-ordered after seeing the concept pictures . . . they were princes for me..... if there's one thing you have to know about me it's that i will always be insane about a prince/royalty/knight concept. also they had like pc-sized little ?? mirrors?? idk but that's rlly cute it's hanging off my bookshelf rn. and i really like my fame album as well because....well i like swoo. and the photocards were really cute!!!!

the ace album i absolutely LOVE from a visual standpoint it's SO pretty (my mom doesn't understand its beauty sadly). it's so pretty it will always be on display idc i love it... it's also very thin and while that's sad (i could take 238472983749823 more of those pictures) it also helps it maintain a very . . . . fancy look i think

the forest fairy concept for the cravity s2 album that i got is close enough to the royalty concept and thus it was SO for me... it rlly reminds me of lovelyz's a new trilogy photobook and that's been my favourite photobook (that i had) for a LONG long long time like.... i really love is SO much. and this vity one really compares to it i love it just as much!!! and thus i had to have it. well, that, and also i have had this album looped for like most of the year it came out in? like i listened to it an abnormal amount. like. a worrying amount. season 3 i pre-ordered and i'm not as satisfied with it visually (i don't rlly like it to be honest) but it has call my name and thus i had to have it also. i've been Obsessed with call my name since the prologue video for this album was released and That is why i pre-ordered it despite not liking any concept pictures it was just THAT important... call my name i love you

border: carnival!!! this one is very important to me on a personal level... both visually and musically. drunk-dazed is still so insane i still don't know what kind of drug they put in it but dear god. and i love mixed up a whole lot too... visually, the box is really pretty despite being simple like. it just fits anywhere really. makes a little statement... there's like. not MUCH to it but it's not ugly like most skz boxes these days, for example. and the photobook is so......important to me i love it so bad i don't get bored of it ever. i just love this concept so much... (surprisingly way more than the prince concept, which u might or might not have noticed... i have Not bought. i didn't like it as much. the One prince concept that i didn't rlly vibe with as much). the scylla ver. of dimension: dilemma is much more my style!! and thus. i really love that one a lot as well <3 odysseus ver. i don't like as much unfortunately but that was a gamble on my part in the first place (i mostly just trusted the blurred gradients on the album preview pictures for this one bc it looked pretty. and well. sunset colours wise it still does. the concept itself just doesn't do it for me). one thing about enhypen is that when they decide to have beautiful photbooks, they WILL have BEAUTIFUL photobooks. the half ver of dark blood i so absolutely beautiful . the other thing you need to know about me is that i go insane about water shots (in water photoshoots and like .... pool scenes in mvs like. txt run away or &team under the skin). this one was just so for me it's insane. also the outer cover for this one is a really beautiful colour it's like... navy... it's so pretty . additional fact is that the group photocards from enhypen albums are some of my fave photocards they're so cute

one thing about hybe is they will release albums that i will want to own. as you could see on my list one day i just went on a full txt spree like i went absolutely insane at the store like idk what possessed me but... i mean i don't regret it. i love these albums to my core. for tdc: magic, it's about the photobook - first of all the photobook is in the format of like. a spiral notebook abt i find that SO cute (and also practical in a way)(although i would hate if that was the default for photobooks, just to be clear). but like . it's just. idk how to describe it... it's Magical?? the darkness the glitter it's so...beautiful.... i love it so much.... the eternity ones are like. little diaries and that's ABSOLUTELY adorable??? i mostly like the version with the.... magical lullaby concept as i like to call it (there's beds there's stars there's . purple and there's . vibes), but since the diary idea is so cute i kinda just caved in and got both... and then comes freeze which i think i preordered? all three versions because all the concept pictures were just so good. and i don't regret this choice at all even today i don't know which version i would choose if i could buy only one. these photobooks are absolutely. beautiful...

my tbz reveal album is one of my fave albums actually!!! i love it a lot musically, but i love it just as much aesthetically... it kinda looks... like a fancy book?? which is just so cool and it's really nice to the touch also (under the initial outer box)... and another one of the VERY rare photobooks that my mom likes. i was honestly surprised at how much she actually liked this one sdkjjksdbk she got out her phone n all... but that's valid it's a really nice photobook. the chase one i like way less, but it's quite different? quite creative i would say!! and i really liked the concept for this version (no regrets once again) !! the chanhee postcard i got from it has always been on display on my shelf he's watching over me (<- insane woman speaking)

my itzy album!!!! bought it a while after it released so i already knew i LOVED the album musically i think i like every single song on it to a degree?? and it turned out to be SO pretty as well... i had an amazing time looking through it after i got home (i stopped by the store minutes before it closed after hanging out with uni friends in the area bc i happened to check my email and see that i could pick my order up kjndkjbdwnjws) not only the photos/concept themselves but just. the entire design of this photobook is so nice it's almost shocking it's coming from jype i was sitting like wtf jype u CAN make pretty albums??? insane. i also love the photocards i got from it!!

wei's identity: action album is another important one... those are my fancy little guys!!! the inclusions were really cute and i really like ... well wei in general, but also bye bye bye is SO good and i like the rest of this album a fair amount, and. most importantly. fancy concept. for me. great. so for me. SO for me.... <3 meanwhile the kingdom albums were a bit more of a caprice because i was getting into kingdom at the time. they're a little... clumsy, i'd say, in the way they're...designed?? but they remain really nice mainly because that's just. a big royalty concept . for me . FOR ME ... once again, not a purchase that i regret!!

it's surprising that fml is the first svt album that i bought since i moved, but what's even more surprising is . the reason i bought it. it's quite embarrassing actually . i was seeing the previews for the deluxe ver. and i noticed that there was . a set of photocards IN the super mv (2nd half) outfits which meant. jeonghan with that hairpin . and once i processed that information my hands acted on their own . um,

<my jini album3 i love jini's album so so so so much... she was my favourite in nmixx back when she was still a member n honestly the only one i rlly knew like. i knew a few of the other members' names but cldn't always recognize their faces n stuff . but my jini ... that's my performer daughter.... she's such a talented performer it's insane. and i was quite worried about her solo debut because... that's easy to screw up ESPECIALLY when expectations are high and. mine couldn't be anything but high because i do think she's insanely talented, and because the title of this album invokes such a strong imagery... and in the biggest plot twist of the year she even exceeded my expectations and released an album that was so for me. i love all the songs SO much i don't think words are enough to express how much i love this album... and when i looked at the concept pictures (a bit after the album was released, actually), i decided i really wanted to buy it... honestly i wanted both versions but i couldn't justify buying both, financially, at the time so.... i'm still waiting for an occasion to buy the pink version <//3 but i am very happy with the version i have as well!!! very proud to have it. and if you haven't checked my jini out yet, you should!!!!!

and finally. i actually didn't think i would buy the zb1 album - i don't really like it musically. i can't remember the exact reason i decided to buy it after all, maybe it was because i DID like the shade ver concept pictures quite a lot? but either way i'm SO glad to have bought it because.... i think it's currently my favourite physical album that i own... it's absolutely gorgeous. in every single way. in its entirety. it's just. beautiful. i encourage you to watch an unboxing video of it or smth because it's . genuinely so beautiful.

my sadame album was actually one that my aunt bought for me because i saw it in a bookstore we went to together and thought rlly hard about whether i wanted it or not.... i was mostly looking forward to the photocard but i got The One Photocard i absolutly did not want . but oh well. meanwhile!! my moonrise album was actually a gift i got from my best friend back in brussels!! which was really cute of her it was SO cute :< we also bought our al1 albums together <3 kissie for aly!! and as for the five albums i got from my bestie... she's been holding them for me for YEARS kkjsdjkndcb but i finally flew over to the states to see her this summer and she somehow managed to cram them into my luggage as i was leaving... and im so vewy grateful for these because i lob them all... i didn't even know that she had a hotshot album to give me but it's an album that i really love (musically) and turns out it's SO pretty also??? it looks quite book-ish, similar to tbz reveal (amd theyre both red also...) which i really love!

another photobook that i REALLY love is the one from my taeyeon's my voice album!! it's beautiful i love flowery concepts... (also really love that album musically a whole lot). was my favourite for a long time visually alongside the lovelyz's one that i mentioned earlier!

musically, got7's turbulence was my favourite album for quite a while, actually... i don't think i can say it and mean it nowadays anymore, but back when it was a relatively new album it was one that i really loved listening to.

other stories include. me constantly forgetting that i own a shinee album. the fact that i managed to own the pristin album (bought it at a convention) but they didn't have the version i wanted (elastin) anymore and i still really want that version... hopefully i can get it one day. not that i dislike this one i'm just glad i have something to remind me they were real..... the fact that i own a jay park album because at one point in my life i was going to kpop dance classes and everyone really liked his music and i started rlly vibing with it for a while to the point of buying. this album. and me hunting for gfriend's snowflake for a long while before i finally managed to buy it (kpop stores in brussels are very. different from the ones in paris. it was not an easy feat)

Natsume: I find it hard to believe even when I’m seeing it with my own two eyES… I did hear that someone hacked into “SHINSEKAI” and did whatever they wanted, thouGH.

That’s our homeroom teacher and the advisor of the Student Council, isn’t iT? What was his name agaIN?

Tsumugi: There’s no way you wouldn’t know.

In this day and age, people who act like they’re a “loner who isn’t interested in others” is, on the other hand, treated like someone uncool who can’t take a hint, you know?

Natsume: Oh, shut uP… AnywAY, just what on earth are thEY?

Those “ghosts” look rather youNG. Actually, they look like they’ve returned to the time they were actiVE.

Sora: Active? Umm, Sora can only “see” something foggy and hazy~

Tsumugi: Change your visibility settings, Sora-kun. You should be able to see what we see if you fiddle with it. According to the manual, anyway.

Sora: HiHi~♪ As Sora thought, it’s only within a game where Sora can be “the same as everyone else”.

But Sora’s eyes aren’t all-powerful, they’re just convenient so Sora will leave them on the same settings as reality.

The calm and clever Senpai and Master~ will verify the things that normal people perceive for Sora, anyway.

Sora will only perceive the things Sora can see and will tell you what information Sora has picked up. Surely, Sora will be more helpful that way~

But Sora is sure Master~ and Senpai will still love Sora even if Sora isn’t helpful.

Sora wants to be helpful.

Natsume: ……… *Hugs Sora gently*

Mika: Ngah~ If we use the original creator’s method of comin’ up with a name, how about ‘Naru-chan Blend’?

(Though, whatever’s that ‘H Blend’? It sounds kinda sus…)

Arashi: Oh my, I was going to name it after Mika-chan, but ‘Naru-chan Blend’ has a nice ring to it too ♪

Mika-chan, you need to go have a good rest after drinking my ‘Naru-chan Blend’, okay? Don’t let me down!

Also, the purple shade of these flowers were deliberately chosen to match that of my eyes, right? No matter what outfit I’m to pair it with, this brooch will definitely become the finishing touch that will showcase my personal flair and charm ♪
