absence is a song i know too well.
i am not whole. i lived my life in fragments –
i can neatly categorize my life before-you,
and after-you. but that’s not the whole truth,
i always find myself somewhere in the middle,
a foot planted firmly on either side,
i am a crisis crossing the karman line.
you're right there in grasp, but i know it’s
an optical illusion that i fell for
far too many times. i still don’t have
the words to neatly describe all of this.
one day, far in the future,
i will be at peace, feeding cold fruit
to my niece, and the words will come
flooding in. you will be out of reach,
but this time i’ll shuffle my feet into
the after-you fragment, and won’t
look back.
maybe.

Transistor Radio
No crystal clarity of stereoor speaker power(to speak of)but my battery-powered transistor radioaccompanied methroughout dayswhen I was not at schooland undercover at night, where I’d tune into pirates of the airwaves,a patchouli-scented teenagerin a council flatimagining Woodstock or Monterey.

NaPoWriMo 2021 - Day 22
I look around at the beauty
behold the wonder that is here.
Waves crashing over bare feet
as they melt into smooth sand.
I breathe in the salt air
let the breeze play with my curls.
Over and over the tide
pulls me in, persuades me
to linger here in these vast waters.
The ocean calls my name
and I lie in the sound.

Canonic platonic sonnet
It was a long four years apart, so much befell us
though I wasn’t keeping records or counting days
I don’t know where one goes when lost, never-ending maze
but through the toil and trial, so my love developed
So compelled, and we oft’ forget what will compel us
to remember you in comedy, in fondness, with praise
and ‘cause the anger’d gone, to tell you in so many ways
that I loved and I missed you, without need to embellish
That late Friday night when you came to my mind
I thought of our joyous laughter, so often fitful
and how protective I felt - a sibling, or a mother
And I wished that I still could call you mine
cherish our giggles, grab our jolly by the fistful
savvy that a friend is a different kind of lover

Nwala’s Reply
How do I move the way I do?Well, how can you not, father?
Your melancholy puzzles me, cousinWhy do you not rejoice with us?
I see, son; still stuck in the mundaneStill corporeal, linear, limited
I gifted you with a name, and yetHere you sit, awaiting more morsels
We tried showing it all at onceBut fearful, you averted your eyes

NaPoWriMo 2021 #22 - Earth Day
NaPoWriMo 2021 #22 – Earth Day
She said whale songs sound sad.I felt the same way about the bluesFor years. I only heard the mourning,And never focused on the swing,The affirmation at its core.
This is a short poem for Earth Day,A reminder that the whale’s songIs a swinging celebration:A modal mixture from the deep,Interacting with all life in its rise.
Listen to some whale songs today. You will see what I’m saying…
