Lessons in Chemistry (prod. Lee Eisenberg).
Apple's miniseries adaptation of Bonnie Garmus' bestselling debut novel stars Brie Larson as a chemist turned television cooking host in a simplified dramatization of the female empowerment movement in midcentury Southern California. How it weaves in a reluctant romance, academic politics, and Civil Rights through its Black characters never quite entirely works together episodically.

What We’re Leaving Out of the Discussion Around Inclusive Design
As a disabled person, I found this article incredibly relatable in terms of being excluded through design. I think it gives a good idea of how the world is less accessible than people think.
Holmes, K. (2018, April 6). What We’re Leaving Out of the Discussion Around Inclusive Design. AIGA Eye on Design. Retrieved October 1, 2022, from https://eyeondesign.aiga.org/what-were-leaving-out-of-the-discussion-around-inclusive-design/
"But what does inclusion actually mean—especially when it’s so feverishly applied to broad areas of society? The word is as axiomatic as it is unspecific. I’ve wrestled with this ambiguity as director of inclusive design at Microsoft, in my own independent design practice, and while writing a book about inclusion. Inclusion is a vast promise—as immense, in fact, as human diversity—and that’s what makes it a great design challenge. But without a clear agreement on what inclusion is, can we ever hope to achieve it? How can we design for something that means so many different things to different people?
Perhaps we can’t, at least not effectively. What I have seen make a difference is a slight shift in the way we think and talk about inclusive design. To do this, we need to address that less popular term, the one that tends to get left out of the discussion: exclusion.
Exclusion is not a PR-friendly word, but it is a universal human experience. We all know how it feels when we’re left out. We each experience it over the course of our lives. Exclusion is concrete and specific, and can often be traced back to an identifiable source. This makes it a meaningful starting point for inclusive design. Our ambitions for inclusion are best achieved by first recognizing and then remedying exclusion wherever we encounter it.
Design is much more likely to be the source of exclusion than inclusion. When we design for other people, our own biases and preferences often lead the way. When we create a solution that we, ourselves, can see, touch, understand, or hear, it tends to work well for people with similar circumstances or preferences to us. It also ends up excluding many more people.
This is especially true with respect to disability. The World Health Organization defines disability as a mismatched interaction between the features of a person’s body and the features of the environment in which they live. This is also known as the social definition, or model, of disability.
Every choice we make as designers determines who can use an environment or product. The mismatches that we create in the process are the building blocks of exclusion. From the stairs at the entrance of a building to the two-handed design of a video game controller, our solutions clearly signal who does and doesn’t belong."
This article is extremely relatable for people with disabilities. I have experienced this type of exclusion with a lot of products, including video game controllers. I can't play video games at all really because they require someone to reach buttons on two sides of a controller at the same time, something that is almost impossible with only one hand. It gives a very clear message to me that I am not welcome in participating in that type of activity.
"Exclusion is a deeply personal subject for many people, and often a painful one. Social cognitive neuroscience studies, like those led by Dr. Naomi Eisenberger and Dr. Matthew Lieberman, are helping to shed light on the effects of social exclusion, ostracization, and rejection. There’s evidence that feeling socially rejected activates some of the same areas of the brain that are activated when a person feels physical pain. In short, exclusion can hurt. Not just metaphorically, but physiologically.
What happens when a designed object excludes us? While we expect people to be unfair, we imagine buildings to be unbiased blocks of wood, metal, and concrete. We expect software to be impartial lines of code. This is why an unusable design feels like a rejection, especially if it gates our access to important social moments.
In these moments, many people are more likely to blame themselves than the object. They might feel left behind and wonder why technology changes so much faster than they do. Moreover, it’s often unclear who’s responsible for fixing that exclusion."
It is really tough feeling excluded because of something I have no control over. Especially growing up this way, I got a lot of clear indicators when I was younger that I didn't quite belong or wasn't 'allowed' to use certain products. It sends a very strong message when products are not inclusive.
"Second, we can focus on mismatches as a way to identify better design constraints. Specific types of mismatches can help us go deep into how to create better solutions. Design thrives with good constraints and is exclusive by nature. The key is to regularly ask yourself who will want to use your design, but will be most unable to do so? And then seek out their input as a way to help you shape better design constraints.
And finally, through design, we can be intentional about why we choose to exclude people and take responsibility for making it better over time through planful investments. Exclusion can become a purposeful choice, rather than an accidental harm.
Inclusion means many different things to different people, and maybe that’s the point. It should adapt to fit a diverse range of situations. But to make meaningful progress towards inclusion, we need to learn to recognize its inverse. Exclusion just might be the ultimate shared experience and sharp focus that leads the way."

2020 is the 15th anniversary of the BAFTA having the Rising Star Award which is voted for by the public. Starting in 2006 known as the Orange Rising Star Award and then since 2013 the EE Rising Star Award, this is due to sponsorship and pretty much helps the award with publicity and getting the public involved in the voting for the winner.
SELFIE BOOTH trying out the “Selfie Booth” during dinner at Grosvenor House Hotel after the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 16 February 2014.
Over the years as I have become more and more obsessed with films I know more about the nominees which in all honesty makes me feel very special and at times very geeky. Which I personally love and am very proud of, I felt coming up to the 15th year it was very important to take a look back at not only the winners from each year but the other nominees as well. The list is very impressive and it feels as though someone at BAFTA can certainly pick out rising stars in the best possible way, the nominees are chosen regardless of gender, nationality and whether they have made a breakthrough in television, film or both.
I guess at times the outcome could be influenced by the fan base which that actor has and if they are in a franchise they will probably be more known than others. But the important thing I want to look at here is the high level of not only winners but nominees and looking at where so many of them are now, so even being picked as the five can certainly be seen as a massive positive.

Now you have had a lovely recap on not only the winners each year but the nominees as well it really is great to see that whoever BAFTA have working on this award they really do find the breakouts very early on. The prime example of this is Florence Pugh, her breakout role was Lady Macbeth yet for some reason not many people seem to have seen that film or remember it so saying 2019 was her breakout year which is very wrong in my opinion! So going forward pay close attention to this award and it will help highlight some very talented young performers that you can find current film or tv work and then also looking out for them in the future as well.
My love for film is huge and I love an award which appreciates fans views as well, as I mentioned earlier if the breakout is in a franchise it really could help with winning the vote. The nominees are all very impressive and some years it is now amazing to see how far some of these amazingly talented actors have come, the big majority still putting in great performances to this day in film, tv and even on stage as well.
I guess as well as looking at the history of this award it is also a small way of saying thank you to Orange and now EE for sponsoring this award for BAFTA. For this years nominees only Kelvin Harrison Jr and Micheal Ward are the two that I have not seen very many things for, so I am happy with the other three being rather well known to myself. I see that as reward for watching a love of film/tv. It does also make me want to catch up with the current work for those two though.
Do you pay much attention to this award? If not, I really would recommend that going forward you see the amazing talented young actors that will be looking to push forward in the next few years and have promising careers. It is certainly something I have been paying a lot more attention to in the past couple of years.

THE INSTITUTE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Gravitas Ventures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  Daniel and Marie seem to be out of options to have a baby after Marie’s reproductive organs are left mangled due to a bad surgical procedure. Daniel comes across what may be their last hope, Dr. Arthur Lands and his The Landis Institute. Desperate to have a child, they begin treatment at a renowned doctor's secluded facility. However, the couple becomes suspicious when the medical regimen brings on psychological side effects. As they attempt to learn the truth about The Institute things take a dark turn and they begin to realize they might be the captives of their mistake.
REVIEW: There have been several films recently released that do an excellent job of combining human and women rights issues and abuse with the horror genre that shines a light on the subject and gives the viewer something to think about. You might consider them socially relevant horror films. THE INSTITUTE is not one of them.
Hamza Zaman’s screenplay attempts to put a contemporary veneer on a genre cliched. Instead of a young couple in an old dark horse, the home of a mad scientist, this couple is motivated by their desire to have a child to this clinic set deep in the woods, far from civilization or cell signals. There are some shady lab assistants and misshapen henchmen lurking about. There’s not much meat on the bone here as early on you can see where this is going and there is not much to these characters. They feel superficial and cliched. There a numerous sex scenes and back in the day the film might be considered “soft porn.”
The cinematography, costumes, and location look great and elevate the film a bit. The effects are kind of kitschy and the Dr.’s fertility lab looks like a contemporary “Flash Gordon” set. The editing adds some momentum to the film, but there are some choppy cuts. The fight sequences were a bit humorous, and I’m not sure they were supposed to be.
The cast is okay. I’m not sure if it is simply the script or the direction, or the combination of both, that often have these performances feeling like nails on a chalkboard. When the cast is together there is this static feeling that prevents the viewer from entertaining the drama. There are moments early on when Ignacyo Matynia and Victorya Brandart are likable. Mark Lobene is okay as Dr. Arthur Lands, but when he ups his intensity I felt like I was watching “Plan Nine From Outer Space.” Okay, so the director, Hamza Zaman, plays the Yogi. His big scene leads the group to an orgy scene. Give me a break!
THE INSTITUTE feels like it should have taken place in a mental institution rather than a fertility clinic. Not one to watch with the kids, and not sure it’s much of a “date night” film for genre fans. It seems like a good idea, but there is no gravitas to the story. The film has more of a sitcom tone than a genre film. This is an old school film that may find a small audience, but lacks the vision to be reimagined for a present-day audience. It lacks a clear vision as to what it wants to be and given some of the plot points it goes off the rails and into a confusing ditch.
