“Nighty night,” mumbled Skuggy, shutting the doors behind him, the noise of the lively tavern become muffled and faint. Only once he had walked a couple feet away had he noticed how terribly loud it had been in there.

The silence and overall isolation that the night provided brought him great comfort. He was still a little shaken from all the physical contact he’d pulled through today, both during the day and the night. He’d need a real good target tonight if he wanted to shake off everything he’d endured. After pretending to be devastated at the deaths in the morning and faking laughs  at the tavern, he was exhausted, tired of putting on a show for others. Now, some time to finally be himself.

Skuggy unlocked the back door of the Salem deli and stepped in. He was greeted with the smell of raw meat and dried blood-- the smell of home! The floors of his workspace were clean thanks to the janitors, but the walls showed that this place had been through...a lot. There were stains here and there, some identifiable and some not. Alongside those were rips in the wallpaper, holes in the actual wall caused by a blade of sorts, and lots of blood splatters. It would have been terrifying if it weren’t for it being a butcher’s room.

“Let’s see…” He murmured under his breath, pulling on some black gloves and surveying his various knives. Some were squeaky clean and some stained red and rusty. As if by instinct he grabbed his trusty meat cleaver– he’s had it for as long as he could remember and it’s done him nothing but good.

Before leaving he put on his butcher’s apron. He didn’t want to cover his new sweater in blood because it was warm, comfy, and smelled good. It was also given to him by a friend, and it was probably one of the only gifts he actually cared about.

Actually, one of the only gifts he could care about.

He also gave his aardvark plushie (left on a table near the door) a good hug before leaving. That was a gift he liked, too, from the weird not-as-dead town he’d been thrown into before.

Out into the night he went, standing in front of the now locked door of the deli. Who to kill on this fine night? He looked through his town list– nope, nobody particular in mind. His eyes stopped at one name– Travis. The local sheriff with the terrible southern accent. That guy had always pissed him off for some reason. Guess it’s good enough of a reason to kill him off tonight.

Skuggy started heading for the man’s house, moving stealthily like a sleek cat, making almost no noise. His eyes were wide tonight as he looked over the sleeping town. Nobody seemed to be outside right now. Perfect. He moved against the walls of houses, looking up at the house number as he passed by. Finally he reached the house of his target, house number nineteen. He peered in through the windows. All was dark. The sheriff was asleep. Even better.

The killer crept in through a window, slowly lowering himself to his feet. The floor below was carpeted. Stealthily he stalked down the halls and around corners until he reached the sheriff’s bedroom. There he was, sleeping happily underneath his covers. He snored softly and his cowboy hat was hung above him on a bedpost. Skuggy watched over him silently, eyes narrowing ever so slightly in concentration. He opened up the bedroom door a little wider, just enough for him to be able to slide through. His blade slipped into the wide pocket of his apron with only a small fwip noise. He continued stepping forward very slowly, very quietly, until he finally stood by the sheriff’s nightstand– far away enough so that he wouldn’t be disturbed by the feeling of being watched, close enough so he could get to him easily. He wrung his hands together, bit his lip, heart pounding in anticipation.

It was now or never.

He pushed forward and grabbed onto the sheriff’s head. The man, of course, let out a strangled cry as the killer pressed his arm against his neck and covered his mouth. Skuggy shoved himself onto the man’s chest and pulled out a balled up pair of spare gloves from his pocket. The sheriff threw a punch at his jaw, causing him to falter for a moment, but he quickly jabbed his knees over the man’s arms and shoved the gloves deep into his mouth. He set his left hand next to Travis’s head and looked down at the powerless sheriff with wild eyes and an excited grin, and the sheriff stared back with wide eyes and muffled whimpers. Skuggy grabbed his cleaver and brought it down to an inch above the sheriff’s neck, getting a scream out of Travis.

“P-please,” said the sheriff through the gloves stuffed in his mouth. “Please d-don’t do this.” Tears graced his grey-green eyes that were full of life.

“Oh, but you don’t know how lucky you are,” Skuggy cooed in a low voice like thunder rumbling. “You’re so lucky...lucky, lucky...” As he trailed off he traced a light line straight across Travis’s neck, blood welling up along it in dots like raindrops on a string of thread. The sheriff was blubbering and trying to beg with a gag in his mouth. Finally, Skuggy had enough of it. He had the line drawn and was ready to end this man’s pathetic pleas.

“Heh.” Skuggy smiled, genuinely, looking directly into the sheriff’s eyes. “Guess it’s nighty night for you, partner.” His voice curled into a snarl as he spoke the final word.

He swung down his knife, and another pained scream cut through the silence of the night.
