i remember maybe what inspired me for stories is like. playstation all stars has a little origins section for each character which explains their backstory. Hey i just found out plastation all stars came out when i was 6 WELL anyway that was one of the first things that inspired me to flesh out things i guess. i love knowing why people are here and doing these things. i feel like i wrote some stuff in like a notebook somewhere about chug + lollipop (but maybe that was later?) i dont know where or if it survived. maybe it was about hat instead i also really liked smash bros + ratchet and clank + pokemon. and some other things i dont remember

Brace yourselves..) #before youtube put looping on phone i made playlists for the songs i wanted to listen to when i slept (ihome) #well. at FIRST i would just wake up and put it back on again but if i listened to them enough i would make a playlist #one time a 50 minute ad starting playing and i thought it would end so i didnt get up until Quite a time #the playlist naems were named 5 stars after fnauhg. and they consisted of like multiple different lyric videos of the songs #with varying qualities and dead air. I ALSO eventually got a loft so putting the music on consisted of getting down the ladder quickly #+ quietly putting the music again then getting back up the ladder quickly + quietly #there was a drawing of cyndaquil (or typshlosion?) on my wall i taped on with like a health bar under it that was kind of not full #all the way. and a drawing of sonic my brother made me but i scratched out the to and from so it had my name on it (and looked like i did i #my room wasnt ever really clean. at least not because of me. i always got the lowest grade in organization in elemntary school #(they graded what the inside of your desk looked like. mine had so much THINGS in it) #my bureau had stickers from every school i went to so i could remember them (It broke when we moved..) #the wood planks were all fucked up cuz i paced and jumped and ran to music and thinking #there were a couple of . nail indents on the floor #in the ladder of the loft i scratched in THE BIG BAD WOLF DIDNT DESERVE IT (or similar) because there was a play where he was on trial #and determined by how much screaming there was WE COULDVE MADE HIM INNOCENT but everyone else didnt like him i guess #my elemntary school had lines on the floor so i looked at them when i walked and for a time i looked at my feet whenever i walked #we got bella in 2012 and shes a cute awesome animal chihuahua. #these are things about me i guess this is the post. So, some of you reeeeally wanted to know just a teeny weenie bit more about my weird boy huh? Well, here ya go:

Yeah, where do I freakin' start with this--? It was not only hard to put together despite the very simple (and more obvious) inspirations... but I had to mega ponder whatever the heck I was on when creating this character, LOL

Lets break it down all over again:

It is extremely obvious (I think) of which characters Tilde's appearance mostly stems from... our funny scout robots from Cave Story: Mr. Traveler and Curly Brace themselves. (Which heehee geddit he has a punctuation naem TILDE ~~ xdd)

I'm pretty sure some of you have probably assumed (Especially with how much I pair them together...^^") Tilde is... well... their kid somehow--

Not... quite? It's... much more complicated than that, don't worry about it! Anyways, I basically chucked them both into a blender to combine their appearances together as much as possible; an example of this is Tilde's hair! It's a blonde color like Curly's and straight; but has a waviness, spiking up at the ends like Quote's hair.

Tilde's antenna earphone things are green, and his eye color is also that bluescreen blue that Curly has as well, lol.

So Tilde's outfit inspirations! Tilde is actually wearing Sue Sakamoto's sweater, along with someone's long green scarf. Its a bit old and worn out... but it's very shnazzy, dontcha think? ^^ In earlier drawing drafts of Tilde back in 2021, his sleeves were actually much more sprite accurate to Sue's-- But then I played OneShot and drew them droopy like Niko's once and it... stuck. idc its staying too. I think I wanted to give him a cuteness bonus, so I gave him hairpins thanks to Chase from Harvest Moon lol

Underneath Tilde's sweater he is wearing a simple black tank with magenta shorts, like Quote's tank and sprite Curly's pants. His shoes I unfortunately don't have a direct correlation for their colors, but they're inspired by Cave Story 3D JP Curly's shoes.

A much more rare appearance, but this is what Tilde looks like as an adolescent-- Don't question why, just roll with it-- I have my reasons and I won't tell you :^) When I was drawing him, my brain just handed me Basil from Omori. Literally, just Basil's energy and a bit of the Mother series protagonists for outfit design... I tried to swishing it around a bit and ended up with a very puntable looking guy, which was the exact vibe I was going for~ >:3c

I gave Tilde a sweater turtleneck and called it a day, then Lucas came to mind again when I was coloring-- Which overall made this particular bit of the outfit more interesting ^^ Tilde here is also wearing Toroko's pendant. Not really much else to cover here, since the many traits from Tilde's youth carries into here. Continuing...

Oh boy, how the times have changed and he's all grown up now T_T

Tilde when he's older takes almost all the liberties from especially Quote, wearing his infamous deadpan expression naturally... but he still remains extremely expressive like Curly ^^

Tilde's outfit is very obviously influenced by them, from their cargo pants to their color schemes (which are also admittedly being carried from his youth as well.) Quote's Blade Strangers design (If you ever heard of it.) was definitely an influence for him as well--

BUT to keep him looking a bit more fresh, I devised to use even more of that special jrpg sauce i love to throw on my characters lmAO

Y'all should already know from my previous post that I'm a weeb a Japanese culture enthusiast, not gonna explain that again

Specially for his outfit Tetsuya Nomura's character designs immediately come to mind, i cannot tell you which one specifically.

While imagining the "cool rpg boy outfit" all these characters blend together in my head, probs because they seem to have similar vibes LOL (very cool Nomura-san)

100% CERTAIN Felix from Golden Sun had an influence on Tilde's outward appearance. I actually drew older Tilde before teen Tilde, and I gave him long hair partly bc of him-- lmao

(While Soren from Fire Emblem is not a main influence for Tilde, he is simply here because I hate him for making me realize long haired dudes are just,,, peak character design idk what to tell you.)

As of the end of that gorgon/stonecursed fight ages ago, all of my players have found, and unlocked the full potential of, their custom endgame magic items! Most of these will be recognizable as reskins, combinations, or other reworks of some base magic items from various sourcebooks. Dropping the statblocks here in case anyone can get some inspiration from them.

Max - Bard | Requiem Masterwork Violin (”Violince”)

Max was given this as a parting gift from his old friend and Trans Mentor TM, Ihava Naeme, as she confronted him before helping smuggle the party out of Requiem during a citywide manhunt. The particular aesthetic details were meant to imply she either stole or was gifted the instrument by the city’s wealthiest and most prominently kindhearted homosexual menace.

Nimbus - Ranger | Longbow of the White Stallion

Nim claimed and was claimed by this weapon in the midst of a desperate fight to hold the city of Suncrest. Originally crafted by a long-time member of the city guard, Nim lay a hand on it after his original handmade bow was sundered in the process of saving Max’s life. Despite initially having held complex feelings toward city life, he’s grown to love Suncrest dearly, and the intent and matching love etched into the bow (literally; the pegasus is the sigil of Suncrest) allowed him to attune to it instantly in the city’s darkest hour.

Farrah - Fighter | Vorpal Sword

RAW, the vorpal sword in the DMG is both grossly overpowered and, frankly, broken in a way that’s just not fun. I think this rework makes it rewarding and powerful while also being Fucking Playable. 

Farrah earned this sword the hard way--she was impaled by it! While fleeing the Wild Hunt, Farrah placed herself deliberately near the rear of the party to help provide cover for the more vulnerable casters and ranger near the front. This meant she was the Huntsman’s primary target. After a long running fight, he ran her through on his black sword and she went under--but the way she fell wrenched the sword from his hand, and after she was stabilized, she declared in no uncertain terms that she was keeping that goddamn sword.

Audie - Wizard | Lilac Guard

Audie actually found this shield-brooch in the antimagic/gargoyle chamber of the minidungeon under Requiem. At the time, it functioned purely as an ordinary enchanted shield--a very useful, but not particularly flavorful, magic item. It gave off an odd pulse when they entered the Faewild, but that was all. Only upon meeting Queen Eleaea of the Wild Court of Summer was the full history revealed, and the full power allowed to bloom.

Andromeda - Paladin | Avenging Dawn

This weapon was found half rotten, the bare hilt of a rusted sword buried in the back of a gorgon the party killed. When Andromeda, drawn by a powerful sense of urgency (but free of any magical compulsion), went to draw the blade, the pitted, corroded blade crumbled to dust the moment it was moved. None of the party can read the Celestial runes carved into the hilt, and an Identify spell nearly blinded the caster.

That spell revealed only that the hilt was not cursed, and that the reason the spell failed was that in this moment, the hilt itself wasn’t anything. It had been something once, and could be again, but right now it was.....waiting to become. To be shown what form it would take. Waiting to be given a new life. With the help of Farrah (a blacksmith), the hilt was reforged as the grip of Andromeda’s trusty, much-upgraded flail Morningstar, and rose to her new form like the sun.

There is a reason the Feathered Serpent would later greet our tiny book-dumb mid-rank paladin as “Pelor’s most beloved”.

bit of a  gnarly sketch but like, you know -- that one zelda 1 piece. the idea is that the past and present have been melded together -- skyscrapers and metropolitan architecture fused with classic zelda fantasy elements

I like the idea of the two aesthetics clashing, but also the culture shock of two generations forced to interact -- even if its just turning Zelda tropes on their head a lil

A part of the culture clash is in the title, too-- a lot of the classic Zelda roles and cycles have been forgotten or eroded with time; at some point, the unending cycle of link and zelda vs ganon just...stopped, and the kingdom was able to move on and become something new.

But a Zelda caught in the transition phase of history marching forward acts with a little less wisdom than she should and uses Forbidden Magic to grasp time itself and craft a future more to her liking, where she isn’t a historical footnote for some bored teens to get bad grades writing essays about.

Zelda is our antagonist, Ganon is a Chill Pigman, and with a different hero, our Link gets shunted to the support role.

Zakai: Zakai lives in a medieval fantasy setting and paints as a side hobby. I imagine his work texture heavy and evocative without being overly detailed - beautiful yet mysterious in the way that he is, being the earth incarnate.

Arkao: Arkao is a scholar who frequently sketches observations of his animal subjects, who are often fast movers, hence the messy, scribbly style. His good penmanship is attributed to his years spent in the scholasticate.

Jas: Jas'ra is a shameless attention-grabber, so of course he would work in bright red pen, his signature would be large, and his drawing would be complete with a crude joke. His style aims to replicate anime, but for being good other forms of art, he cannot draw well.

Poy: Poy works with watercolor because, being raised in a fishing community, she has interest in all things water. She's also transfem and sweet at heart, so her style would be cutesy to match, even if she's not much of an artist.

Mira: She lived the first 17 years of her life in dark caves, and even though she's out now her eyesight isn't the best, so... yeah.

Cadfael: As an interdimensional traveler with an incredibly high stakes job he would surely be detail-oriented enough to have a somewhat more realistic style, but simply cannot sacrfice his desire for personalization and edginess.

wow!!! that was a year

as I begin to write this post I'm not even sure if I'm going to post it, lmao. I guess it depends on how much of a bummer it turns into. and if it helps me sort out some thoughts, then it won't have been a complete waste of time.

waste, huh...

on one hand, I don't... reaaaally?? want to talk about what's been going on in my life? but on the other hand, there's a part of me that's like "wow, Naem, that makes it sound like you've been struggling with some serious shit, which is straight up not true, do you just want people to feel sorry for you?" and then on the third mutant hand (I have a lot of those, it turns out) there is a different part of me that does acknowledge the way this other section of my brain jumps straight to accusatory self-flagellation is something many people do not, in fact, struggle with

I've been doing remote therapy this year! it's alright. my therapist has some wild ass takes from time to time, and it is perhaps one of my most substantial monthly expenses (note: yes I still live with my parents so, you know, I don't pay rent), but she IS insightful and a good professional so like. I feel, on the whole, it's working out well for me. a-aside from the part where I still can't seem to love myself consistently but unfortunately I don't think anybody else can fix that for me. I just... have to keep working on it.

speaking of therapy, maybe I should tell her in the next session "hey, cool new year, uhhh I keep finding myself thinking it isn't worth getting excited or feeling hopeful for anything because as time goes on there will only be more and more things to be sad about, because everything is finite and loss is a constant, and it's kind of bumming me out?" maybe I should. honestly, that was the thought this post was going to center around initially, but I've found other things to talk about, thankfully.

ah man. heck. I JUST narrowed down the exact thing motivating this post. "the dread I feel when i see everyone on social media post about their Year In Review." so much of this is about the unrelenting passage of time.

not everything is a huge bummer. experienced some good-ass media this year. Hi-FI Rush was really cool, Midnight Mass was so good it got me to watch it three times in spite of how bad I am with horror, Across the Spiderverse was as good as everyone said - speaking of Spider-Man, I think I've come to terms with adopting Curt Connors as a blorbo, which has nothing to do with Spiderverse but is, perhaps, a baby step in the direction of Accepting The Trash I Like. excited for more Jojolands. Jujutsu Kaisen S2 was really fucking good, so much so that I'm afraid no future arcs will grip me the same way. oh yeah, I got really into Will Wood this year, which is a bit embarrassing because his fanbase seems to be composed primarily of teenagers, but hey. sort of circling back around to me needing to accept what I like, I guess.

I've been taking other baby steps, namely towards Drawing More Often. I... have, right?? I know I haven't posted everything I drew, but it was definitely more than, say, two years ago. which is nice. hope I can keep that up or, even better, Do It Harder.

I don't have a habit of making New Year's Resolutions. I do have a couple of wishes, but I'm frankly not sure if they're anything I can control. Financial stability? Well, there are certainly efforts I can make in that direction, as much as I hate even looking at LinkedIn. To stop finding myself trapped in the middle of interpersonal conflict that I care about too much even when it doesn't directly concern me, resulting in weeks of heightened anxiety at a minimum? I think if it were within my power to stop that, I would have already done it, but uhhhhhhhhhhhhh

ah man. I should have found a nicer note to end this on. ummm.

I deeply appreciate all of my friends, not only for being generally rad people but also for seeing nice things in me when I can't. This goes quadruple for my girlfriend, who manages to do all that while also struggling with brains that are very mean and unfair to her.

I feel like I said this last year, but I hope I can learn to depend on you all a little less going forward. Not in a "get out of my life you LOSERS" kind of way, but in a "thanks for the support, here, I can stand on my own two feet, so don't worry about lending me another one" kind of way.
