If you're worried that your puzzle chamber is basic, just throw in a peanut gallery of random NPC talking statues that serve literally no mechanical purpose, they're just there to be whacky

Highlight of last night's dnd session, paraphrased:

The tavern owner we've been helping with her scummy landlords: Yeah and one of them [landlords] came to talk to me earlier today. He wouldn't even use one of my cups. He brought his own goblet and then left it here.

Bard, immediately whipping around toward the sink: I cast detect magic on the goblet.

DM, tossing a bunch of notes for the several days of build up and increasing stress levels of our tavern owner she'd planned: Yeah the goblet is super cursed.

strategies the d&d team came up with to solve a murder mystery-slash-election scandal-slash-evil slumlord forcing our nice barkeep NPC out of her tavern

take out a mortgage and buy the tavern

PRETEND we're going to take out a mortgage to buy the tavern, but really just using this as an opportunity to get a look at the guy's books and see if they're cooked

rig the election so he loses

ring the election so another person wins

(these are different strategies)

steal the guy's books to proove that he's cooked them and so he loses the election as a result

forge books that aren't the guy's but COULD BE, so he loses the election etc

go to city hall, get into the records room, figure out if they're lying to the city

convince one of the opposition candidates who dropped out to publicize that she did so because he threatened to kill her kids (failed, because he threatened to kill her kids)

pretend to be equivalently snotty nobles from a different location to get into a room with them and then just bluff from there until we get answers

openly sit down in a meeting and openly offer to buy the tavern (loop back to option 1)

sneak into his house through the backdoor, bribe a servant, and break into his office, to collect the cooked books and/or murder evidence

sneak into his house through the ROOF, break a window, etc

get into his office in order to PLANT murder evidence

ditto, but in order to specifically set him up to murder his next guest

unionize his servants

WINE - how do they act when drunk? and RUBY - what do they consider most precious/valuable?

as a little treat for me i think i will answer these for TWO characters !!!

WINE - nickei. Nickei has never actually been drunk in his life (being in a very straight-edge majorly fascist hero academy will do that to you) but if he was drunk, he'd get majorly flirty. it's his version of lightening up, and the majorly flirty would just be giving his unfiltered thoughts to ren. he thinks ren is the pinnacle of beauty, though the implications of that are lost on him.

WINE - dallon. Dallon has been drunk many times in his life (though never on the unofficial clock) and every single time he just really, really wants to whine about the singular year he worked in customer service and how bad people drive on the road. big complainer when he's drunk. however. just sit and watch like a season of the great british bake-off and he'll be good.

RUBY - nickei. Nickei doesn't necessarily have anything valuable, since he's never went out and bought things. He would always consider people the most valuable. It'd probably be Ren. he's unhealthily obsessed with the guy, it's kind of a problem. other than that, it'd most likely be the sun pendant he was buried with the first time around.

RUBY - dallon. Dallon's most precious/valuable object he owns is undoubtedly an old jacket he got from his dad when his dad was in his 20s and working as a full-time EMT and also taking care of dallon by himself. the jacket felt like home when he was a kid, and then getting it from his father? it felt like being entrusted with an entire portion of his father's life, and he was so honored he almost cried. his dad did have to hug him. other than objects, though, it's his morals. he thinks that without his morals, he's no better than the people he aspires to talk shit about justifiably.
