nickei and ren in modern au would already have a strenuous relationship, right? a falling out due to something, i'm sure; depends on the au. maybe one of them got kicked out of uni bc of some malpractice and one didn't? who knows!

nickei, who has never actually been happy in his life, who's been fighting for his freedom and this sense of belonging that he's never going to get, who doesn't drink often but drinks hard when he does, who's prone to getting into fights when he's drunk because he loses that ominous and quiet air about him, who gets picked up by the cops.

nickei, who spends the night in jail before he makes his emergency phone call. nickei, who dials the ren's number, who is now too sober to justify calling him but can't think of who else he even would call, who hasn't spoken to him in like a year, who isn't over what they had, who isn't over the way he threw that all away because of ideology he doesn't even believe in anymore.

ren, who does not pick up.

at first.

ren picks up eventually. he agrees to the potential charge of the call going through. he listens to nickei's sob story about his bar fight and the night he ended up staying in a cell.

ren, who hangs up. because he is the one who has to leave first and will always leave first because otherwise he is going to get too attached to a man who does not know the difference between affection and suffocation, who doesn't know how to regulate his emotions or bother to communicate and ren can't live like that.

nickei, who stays. and ren, who leaves. always.

This week’s excerpt of When Comes the Dawn

The tea finished steeping just as Leda walks through the doors, a plate of finger foods in hand and Fenice’s recent acquisition following close behind. Leda bobs in a short curtsy before entering her presence, the man does not, instead pulling up a seat across from Fenice, one arm slung behind the back of the chair. “It’s done. As of this morning, ‘Orin Reiden’ will have committed suicide in his own cell for fear of further retribution after selling out his masters. The guards should be finding his body now.” Leda sets the plate onto the table, then deliberately slides it towards Fenice and away from the now-deceased Orin Reiden. Fenice rests her fingers around the base of her teacup, tracing its smoothly carved facets. “Have you chosen a new name for yourself, then?” With a flourish of his hand, he gives an exaggerated bow. “Sola Eidos at your service, your highness.” “...What a unique name that is.” “I sure hope so, I did just make it up.”

Notes:

So it turns out the thing that I was feeling the past two weeks that made it difficult to open the word doc was burnout lol. Burnout + writing myself in a corner + not having the clearest idea of what my next steps should be + finals coming up. Will still try to reach that 15k goal but I'm mostly gonna do it at a very leisurely pace.
