ive always had trouble including the whole impending fate from Hermaeus Mora in Naelin’s story, as she was never one to thirst for knowledge really, just freedom and yet a place to call home. therefore it would be hard for her to feel drawn to Apocrypha naturally- honestly thats more Drelas’s thing.

so ive been thinking on it lately, and i choose to believe (because i dont have a brain for research dshfjkf) that Mora can influence and pull anyone he may wish to, especially those who have had dealings with him before - to a certain extent. those naturally drawn to knowledge are obviously much more prone to it, like Septimus and Miraak, but even those without that vice can be lured.

so i have it that after Apocrypha, that lure starts wiggling its way in for Naelin. she becomes much more interested in arcane things, and all those rare valuable books Drelas picked up over time are starting to look a lot more interesting. she starts digging into it without really knowing why, and Drelas doesnt know to be concerned at first. he even kind of likes it, since it was area and now shes actively interested in what he does.

but the longer it goes on, the more odd it gets. she doesnt even understand her own interest, but the more she learns the more intrigued she is. she starts talking about maybe returning to Solsthiem, make sure everything is still put down over there, and thats where red flags start popping up. Naelin hated everything that happened because of Miraak, theres no way she’d want to go back there without real urgency. those words from Mora start sounding like they could be true...

she starts murmuring things that even Drelas doesnt know about, and he knows this is wrong. shes growing jittery and restless and obsessive and he has to physically stop her, “This isn’t like you, this isn’t NORMAL.” 

Naelin nearly has a breakdown because she KNOWS this isnt normal, she knows something has taken root that isnt her and shes SO afraid of becoming like Miraak. they have to make a point to keep her away from any arcane research, any trips to the College she has to stay in the courtyard, because if she starts digging in even a little she afraid she may fall in again.

a few things can stay. the Restoration shes picked up gets to stay, the knowledge about dragons and language needs to, but it hurts that shes become afraid of knowing more about what she came from. knowledge becomes a fear but something she can never put down, and a foreign desire becomes part of her own.

she’ll never turn to Apocrypha, to Mora - she’ll die first. but those black tentacles never quite go away, for the centuries she has left. the Prince needs his Champion, after all.

in beta stages Drelas was originally called Dreval or Draylin. i had to change it cause it sounded too much like Naelin and Dreval didnt fit :U

HOWEVER, there is actually an NPC in Skyrim who is ALSO named Drelas, and i had no idea when i was naming him. so i guess i might have named him the dunmer equivalent of John  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mull was originally a Nord in the concept stages

technically Mull’s voiceclaim is Kilowog from GLTAS, but its very similar to the orcs in-game so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Naelin was less morally upstanding at first (not that shes perfect now lol) because she was based much more around how i actually played the game (with reckless abandon and no morals)

Naelin was also the oc that triggered my Oc Renaissance TM, with my second skyrim playthrough and my sister encouraging me to actually put thought into her name and character. thank u Nat i owe u my life 

An-Ra has a big ol thirsty crush on Mull and he doesnt quite know how to deal with that lol

An-Ra’s voiceclaim is Nina Blackwood! (originally it was Amethyst from Steven/Universe but it sounded too young)

Filgan was only made story important because i needed someone to fill in the Dawnguard quests since they are canon and i love them but Naelin is way too busy, and im glad i did because i Lov Him

Razei started out purely as a joke that came from a funny voice i put on while playing Morrowind with my sisters, but she quickly developed into my sister’s Nerevarine companion!

Razei’s name was originally Am-Razei, but i changed it to Pu-Razei because it had the same A-R rhythm as An-Ra

i still dont have anyone to do the College quests but i want to someday!

Misc

Talba’s name came out of nowhere for me and wouldnt leave me alone, but it works because i was basing her features on East Indian ones and a tabla is a kind of Indian drum

Rhode’s voiceclaim is Ryuko Matoi! (spoilers for KLK)

Shinkou’s voicelaim is Veronica from Heathers!

despite popular conception, Archer’s faceclaim is not Chris Pratt! he doesnt have one and i dont know how he ended up looking like him! i did this to myself!

Archer was also a semi-joke at first and he only ended up getting a name (which was ALSO a joke) a month or two in lol

Ryujin was also a joke in the beginning but about 10 seconds in we were already in hot water

in that short lived joke stage, he was literally Raiden’s opposite in every way, with even his organic-to-machine ratio being reversed. so 90% flesh and bone and %10 machine, which was almost entirely concentrated in his SKULL and SPINE. once we got a little more serious we had to scrap that for obvious reasons lol

Kurt is lowkey named after Kurt Russel, who played Snake Plisskin in the “Escape From” movies who Solid Snake, Kurt’s “brother” was based on lol

Naelin was a merchant from the fallen kingdom in the island of Tháur that made a living from hunting and selling wares through different ports of the archipelago, and had his experience with both bows and beast’s diplomacy. After the High Rust, he and his little crew struggled to survive, but during one of the trips to an island on the south, Naelin went back to his ship carrying a hurt Tetsu cub that didn’t seem to intent on killing them. After the massive initial panic, the small crew agreed to take the cub back. He became a living legend among his people in no time, and feeling that the Tetsu’s cub was the ultimate display of power and protection, a settlement of people eager to live closer to the beast quickly formed, which turned to consider Naelin as a leader, and some time later, built a small kingdom with him as king. His rule is extremely characterized by his eagerness to form pacts with all kinds of species, including those usually overlooked by other peoples. As such, Tháur’s people make a harder distinction between pactual and crude beasts than other nations. He is a furry, and his phenotype is exotic.

Review: The Reluctant Queen by Sarah Beth Durst  Rating: 5/5

Naelin knows that being able to control the spirits that inhabit the forest makes her special. But she also knows that it makes her dangerous. With two young children and a husband who is worse than useless, Naelin has always done her best to keep the spirits at bay. But when the Queen sends her champions out looking for new heirs, the rumours of Naelin's affinity draw her into the conflicts she has tried so hard to avoid.

There used to be a post floating around tumblr bemoaning the lack of fantasy novels about grown-ups going on adventures but The Reluctant Queen is here ready and waiting for you. I wasn't sure where the story was going to go in this instalment but I was so excited when we were introduced to Naelin. A middle-aged woman who loves her children more than anything discovering she's the most powerful user of magic in the world? Sign me up!

I loved watching Naelin come into her own as she began to trust the help of familiar faces Ven and Daleina. We got to meet some amazing new characters in Mistress Garnah, Hamon's mother and a poisons specialist, and Alet, a palace guard who befriends Daleina and Naelin. I loved getting to know Arin better and seeing Merecot again too.

The big worry with any sequel is if it will live up to the first in terms of excitement but this is one of the most satisfying middles of a trilogy I've read in a long time. The mystery with Daleina was well-paced and Durst balanced it beautifully with Naelin's rise to power. The events of the climax could've been brought in a tiny bit sooner, perhaps, but it was still awesome to read.

A stunning sequel that sets things up perfectly for what should be a thrilling conclusion.

Happy book birthday to THE QUEEN OF SORROW!

I was raised on fresh raspberries, whole milk, and epic fantasy -- Terry Brooks, Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, David Eddings, Guy Gavriel Kay... Growing up, I read my favorites over and over again, and I dreamed of writing my own trilogy someday, filled with grand adventure and deadly magic. I wanted it so badly that I barely ever talked about it -- it felt like a wish made on birthday candles, and I was so desperate for it to come true that I didn't want to do anything to dispel the power of that wish.

Today I am so happy and grateful to be able to share that wish-come-true with you! Today my very first epic fantasy trilogy is complete!!! It's the pub day for THE QUEEN OF SORROW, Book Three of The Queens of Renthia, published by Harper Voyager. I wrote these books out of love for the stories that shaped me and out of a wish to add my own brand of badass women to the genre.
