The Day He Realized He Wanted to Marry You (Zen)

Despite his confident demeanor, Zen had plenty of insecurities about his looks. After all, years of verbal abuse won’t disappear overnight.

No matter how many times he would tell everyone he was perfection embodied, a little snake in his head would always tell him he’s just fooling himself. That all along, his parents had been right and he was on the wrong path.

These fears will never be voiced, especially not in front of you.

Even on the days he would ask you, “Jagiya, isn’t your boyfriend especially beautiful today?” and you’d look at him with a delighted smile, that snake would come slithering into his head a few moments later.

There was a day, however, when that voice… Well, it wasn’t silenced completely, but at the very least, it gave him a foothold for bad days.

He still remembered that morning. It was a particularly warm day. He had rehearsals for a movie, and you were off to meet with an old classmate.

“I mean, do you really have to go?” he asked.

You were in the mirror, fixing your hair. “Hyun, it’s not a date. It’s business. He has a fiance for crying out loud!” you shouted with a chuckle.

“You can never tell until the knot is tied… and even if it is you can’t.”

You looked over to him with half a glare. “Our party is in a month and he has excellent connections. Connections that will make excellent guests.”

That was exactly why he felt uneasy about it. If he had excellent connections, he’s probably a rich businessman who’s got a way with words.

“It’s going to be an hour tops and then I’ll drop by your set. We can have dinner together.”

“Promise?”

“Absolutely,” you said, sealing the promise with a kiss on his cheek.

And so, you two went off to your own businesses.

It was strange though. He knew it would take you more than an hour to get to the set, but he didn’t expect you to be 3 hours late. Besides, whenever you were going to be late for anything, you never failed to update him.

The director called a wrap and so he called you. You didn't answer. He called and called and called. Each time that your phone went into voicemail, he was growing more paranoid.

What if… you enjoyed your childhood friend company too much?

All those promises he said after the incident. That he’d protect you. That you were the most important thing to him. That he wanted nothing more than to be with you. That his biggest fear would be for you to disappear… What if that was coming true today?

Stay calm. Your phone could be faulty, out of battery, you could be at home.

He was about to rush home when one of his co-star’s personal assistant’s stopped him.

“Thank goodness I caught you.”

“I’m kind of busy, what is it?” he asked, a bit too harshly.

“The hospital called us, they said your partner was in an accident, they’ve been trying to reach you but they don’t exactly know how.”

He took a cab to the hospital immediately fearing the worst. Hating himself even more to even consider that you were off having fun with someone else.

“Ah yes. There’s no need to worry. There was a collision with a biker and resulting in a dislocated kneecap but the doctors were able to fix it with no problem. The anesthesia is wearing off so go ahead.”

And he did. There you laid on the bed talking to one of the nurses. The nurse had a smile on her face.

“All I’m saying is… like… you know like fruit? Yeah… like, if fruit takes like...like... more than 2... if it takes a lot of steps for you to do the thing, what do you do?”

“You eat it?” asked the nurse.

“Yeah yeah yeah yeah. That. If it takes more than like… yeah 2 steps to get to good stuff. Not fruit… It's bad fruit.

The nurse spotted him. “I think someone is here to see you,” she walked towards him. “Just a heads up. Anesthesia has a way of making people a bit too honest,” she warned before leaving.

“Thank goodness you're okay,” he told you with a sigh of relief.

Your eyes squinted to look at him. Your hands stretched out your hands and he held out his own, but you swept them away. Instead, you gestured for his face to come closer.

Zen knelt down to do as you wished. With both hands cupping his face, your eyes lit up in recognition. “Ah… I know you.”

He chuckled. “I certainly hope you do.”

You nodded to yourself. Pleased. “Uh-huh, you’re my beautiful boyfriend. My beautiful boyfriend is here.”

His heart melted at that. “I’m here.” Placing his hand over your own, he found the absence of a ring an issue to be remedied.

Thank you for the request, anon! It made me laugh when it first came in because, at the time you sent this ask in, there were no Saeyoung requests and two other Zen requests. The Zen love was strong this Valentine's season (and I can't blame you all, I mean look at him).

With that, I wish you a happy early Valentines day!

Zen loves quietly

It’s not by choice. He wishes he could tell the world just how much he loves you. Over and over again, until it became a universally known fact.

Unfortunately, after a few conversations with his team (some of your first as his manager), you all – somewhat reluctantly - decided that it’d be beneficial for his image and career for you to keep your relationship as private as possible.

On the walk home, he made it a point to hold your hand. He had protested the hardest against the idea of having to keep your relationship quiet. After everything the two of you had been through together, he thought you deserved to be praised by everyone who supported him.

You reminded him that there were still loopholes. Nobody was stopping you from sharing in your daily life together and enjoying your usual date spots, you just needed a bit more of a disguise as his fame began to skyrocket.

You eventually managed to cheer him up, and he was a little bit embarrassed of how upset he had been over his new restrictions. Sure, he wanted to show you off to the world, but there are special joys to be had in sharing things just between the two of you. It brought another level of intimacy to your relationship, a side to your lives that only the two of you got to share in.

To redirect his frustration, he makes it his job to find all ways he can discreetly remind you just how much you mean to him.

He likes a challenge.

Although he can’t show you off in public, that doesn’t mean he can’t do so in front of the RFA. He loves to share pictures of the two of you (they’re almost as plentiful as his selfies once were) and is always full of praise for the work you do.

Pretty early on, he goes over to Yoosung’s house with a bagful of groceries and asks him to teach him how to cook your favourite food. He wants to be able to take care of you, and even spoil you after long days. It takes some bickering and making a mess of the kitchen but in the end, he’s pleased with the result. He has notes written down for how to do it by himself when he needs to, and he can’t wait to see the look on your face the first time he can cook for you.

He often wakes up earlier than you, and on days when he has to leave for work before you wake up, he prepares you a coffee and leaves you a little note on the kitchen table, reminding you that he loves you and can’t wait to hear from you when you wake up. Writing out those little notes always makes him feel like the main character in a romance story.

Notes on the table aren’t the only ones he leaves you. When the weather turns cold, he likes to write little love notes and stick them in your pockets for you to find later. You keep them in your wallet and in a small box on your dresser to look at when you miss him. Each one is written so vividly you can almost hear his voice as you read them.

He hates having to keep his distance from you at work. It feels like the two of you are always circling around each other and always just missing each other. He finds excuses to bring you into conversations (as his manager, of course, it’s important to always get your input). He keeps his distance, but he smiles at you like a child getting away with a prank. Just your presence by his side is enough to make him light up.

You make an effort to wake up early together so that you can enjoy his favourite park while it’s still mostly empty. He brings his cap with him everywhere he goes, and he often has to wear it on the walk back home once the sun has fully come up.

One of the first things he does after he lands his first movie role (and therefore receives his first movie-sized paycheck) is buy you a set of matching rings. He insists on putting it on your finger himself, and he does so with gentle movements and seals it with a soft kiss. You know even without him telling you that it’s a promise. You’ve come this far together, and it’s only the beginning. He wants to give you a future the two of you can be proud of.

He lets you put his on his finger too, and blushes bright red as he watches you. He doesn’t take it off until his next public appearance. That’s when you surprise him with a delicate chain, something subtle that matches the jewellry he already wears. He slips the ring onto the chain and wears it under his clothes, close to his heart. The world might not see it, but you’re always with him.

All these little things add up, and in the end, it doesn’t matter that he doesn’t get to tell the world that he loves you. Each gesture feels like a grand declaration of its own.

Jumin, who never really thought himself to be the romantic type, but loses himself so easily in his relationship with you that he’d do anything imaginable just to see you smile for him. This sophisticated, pressed-suit wearing, stone-faced man who just crumbles when it comes to you, —who once thought love was some sick ruse made to rope people in and keep them hostage to their feelings, suddenly realizing that this rush is marvelous, and he can’t quite clearly remember a time before his heart seemed to beat for you. Hyun, who stops pretending to be perfect over time and lets you see him in all the stages of healing. This man who often shields himself from the world, hiding behind a mask of narcissistic confidence, who finally lets his imperfections seep through to the surface and breathes another sigh of relief every single time you stay in the aftermath. He lets you in on the insecurities that lap at his ankles much more often than he'd ever had liked to have admitted before. He lets you hold him when he shatters instead of pushing you away, —dulls all his rigid edges to feel your warmth surround him, as if lowering all his defenses for the very first time. The world can be a cruel place to those that have made mistakes, but Hyun feels like he's finally found someone who can look at him for more than just the pretty, well-kempt face he maintains for the public. There's no sense of shame he feels the need to drown in when you let him fall apart in your arms. There's no crushing feeling of disappointment or suffocating feeling of disdain. He's more human than he fears he's ever been when your thumbs wipe the tears from beneath his eyes and you whisper to him that everything will be okay.

＃ YOOSUNG !! ♡

Yoosung, who learns over time how to not let things fester until they’ve built up so much he can’t keep them in any longer. For all he is and might not ever be, he’s come to realize that it’s okay to express his emotions before they reach a boiling point. He comes to you at the onset of upsetedness, —allows himself to feel frustrated without stuffing it down and pretending the problem doesn’t exist until it explodes. He finds that it’s so much easier to be earnest when you never talk down to him or make him feel like he’s any less of a person in your eyes because of it. Sometimes he needs advice, and other times, he just needs someone to talk to. No matter the case, he seeks you out before anyone else, knowing that you care enough about him to value his thoughts and opinions without qualifiers or regulations. He holds grudges sometimes that aren’t good for his own sake, and being shut down when he tries to address them only adds fuel to the fire. Having someone who truly listens and tells him that it’s okay to feel the way he does goes such a long way, —perhaps longer than you’ll ever know.

＃ SAEYOUNG (707) !! ♡

Saeyoung, who lets himself be honest eventually, —who lets himself chip away and then lets you smooth him over. He’s done a lot of things he’s not proud of, and he doesn’t need anyone to tell him that it wasn’t his fault. Whether it was or wasn’t doesn’t matter as much as what he knows he has to do going forward, and the last thing he really wants is to be coddled out of pity. He just wants to be heard, no sympathy necessary, no fawning over the way he sheds the skin he used to wear when he felt like happiness was millions of miles away. He just wants to be listened to. To Saeyoung, it’s the ultimate show of trust to admit to all the things he regrets, let them spill out like word vomit and not have to worry about the consequences. He doesn’t need you to understand, and knows you likely can’t given the specifics of his life’s course thus far, but knowing that you’re keen on carrying the burden with him is such an insurmountable feeling of relief. Finally, someone knows every grimy little corner of his soul and they still love him, still hold him, still want him. . . There’s nothing quite like it.

＃ SAERAN (RAY) !! ♡

Saeran, who lets little things slip as time goes on, —stares a little longer when he passes twin popsicles in grocery stores because he knows you won’t ask why. As much as he likes to pretend that he can fix things by pretending they never hurt him in the first place, there are always scars that linger just below the surface, ready to burst at the first sight of mint-colored liquids or at the first sound of deceptively sweet voices offering commands from the shadows. He carries a lot around with him wherever he goes, and just loving him until the sun dies isn’t a cure-all. You can’t turn back time and shield him from all the things in his life that have left him feeling like a shattered stain glass window. All the love in the world can’t fix the past. But there’s nothing that means more to him than knowing he can lean on you, —even if he doesn’t always do it. There’s such a sweet comfort in knowing he can turn to you when he feels like he’s drowning. And if sometimes that manifests only in letting himself shed a few tears while he eats an ice cream cone outside next to you in the sunshine, then so be it.

＃ JIHYUN (V) !! ♡

Jihyun, who talks about it all a little at a time, —about the good and the bad, the ugly and the beautiful; because it wasn’t always bad. There were times before you came in which he’d been so in love that he’d have done anything to stay exactly where he was, to freeze those moments up and keep them in a capsule that could never be shaken. And it’s important for Jihyun to tell you about those things every now and again, to let you in and reminisce on the way he’d once been so sure of it all, so ready to settle down and stay exactly where he was. But it’s equally as important for him to bare the remnants of the betrayal for you to kiss, and hold, and make peace with. He likes to think you understand him better in the wake of it, —that you’ve seen him in a new light every time he sits with you and tells you of the loss, the desire, the yearning, and all the ways he wishes things could have been different for everyone. In the end, he’s here, and there’s nowhere else he’d rather be.
