the 70s is one of my favorite time periods for pop culture but it's one of THE greatest time periods in popular music history. disco, rock, pop, r&b, folk, funk, punk, basically every genre all churning out some of the best albums in their respective histories.
rumours, what's going on, dark side of the moon, born to run, songs in the key of life, blue, all things must pass, london calling, the wall, bitches brew, maggot brain, theres a riot goin on, blood on the tracks, ziggy stardust, sweet baby james -- almost all of these considered some of the best albums ever made -- came out in the same decade.
for one decade, miles davis, the beatles, marvin gaye, bob dylan, bruce springsteen, talking heads, dolly parton, ABBA, pink floyd, stevie wonder, queen, the clash, the carpenters, donna summer, kate bush, earth wind and fire, the o'jays, chic and soooo many more legendary artists were releasing some of the best work of their careers. at the same time.
this isnt even getting into amazing one hit wonders and hits from less famous artists like ring my bell, dancing in the moonlight, i'm not in love etc. i cant even wrap my head around all this amazing music coming out at the same time, it's like a renaissance to me.

FEEDBACK IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
Tumblr media
You slide your lunch tray across the wooden table and sit down with your chin in your fist. "Listen, your dating life isn't that awful, you'll meet someone y/n." Robin says her mouth moving at 60 miles per second as she slides in next to you. Your dating life has been the hot subject since second period, but it's not the enchanted Disney movie you'd expected it to be. In fact, it's the entire opposite
You murmur, poking at the mystery meat on your lunch tray, "I don't know Robin, maybe I'm destined to be alone forever." Every date or relationship you've ever been in has been awful; the people were either trying to get in your pants or were just outright douches. You've experienced everything Hawkins has to offer and you don't want to live some depressing life with two kids, a husband you don't even love, and a house on the end of a cul de sac, “Listen that’s a bunch of bull and you know it I mean there’s nothing wrong with not being in a relationship.”
“Easy for you to say you're dating Vicky,” Robin shrugs her shoulders while grinning apprehensively. As she places your fork on the lunch plate, you roll your eyes at her in a huff. “You'll still find someone, so don't worry,” okay, yes. When it came to discussing your love life, Robin was constantly upbeat, and you were appreciative of her positivity since it gave you a lot more confidence in your ability to meet someone.
Before the conversation continued the bell rung signaling everyone to move on to their next class “so what are you doing after school” Robin gets up slinging her bag over her shoulder “just the usual wallowing in my own sadness and self pity” you shrug your shoulders with a sarcastic grin, Robin tilts her head at you and groans in response “fine, fine I’m stopping at the music store to get a few things then heading home” you and Robin begin to exit the cafeteria, the stench of sour milk and cheap imitation meat leaving your noses “sounds like a y/l/n afternoon to me.”
Robin sends you a smile and a wave before heading into class and you into yours, you take your seat at the back of the classroom slouching into your chair and fiddling with your pencil drowning out whatever bullshit the teacher is spewing out.
———
You enter the small music store in downtown Hawkins, opening the door as the bell above it chimes, and the aroma of the store and the tranquil music fill your senses giving you serotonin, You typically stop by whenever a new album by your favorite band is released or just to browse what they have in stock and pick what you like. The music store was moderately busy, with only a dozen or so people hanging around, mostly customers trying to get their hands on anything by Madonna, Bowie, and The Beatles.
However, you typically find yourself exploring the back of the store where all the vinyl and tapes from metal/rock bands lie mostly untouched. Your fingers skim through each row gently as your mind is entirely focused on finding something you fancy; as a result, you hardly notice anyone approaching you until the loud sound of squeaking shoes startles you out of your reverie, "Woah, holy shit, didn't mean to scare you." A tall boy with long hair and tattoos all covering his arms appeared in front of you. "No, no, you're okay." You talked softly, taking in more of his little features, like the maroon vest he was wearing with his name sewn into the top corner and pins of metal bands scattered on the fabric also the tag gun tight in his ring clad hand.
You look away from his hand and toward his eyes to see that he is still staring at you in shock. "I'm sorry I just didn't expect to see anyone back here well, there is the usual old head but I've never seen you here," he smirks as he approaches you while pulling vinyls from the stack tagging them. “Can’t say that I’ve seen you here either, usually it’s Otis manning the register.”
He peeks at you and your intent demeanor as you continue to flip through the rows of vinyls, "Yeah I'm new and Otis is out today I'm surprised he trusts me to take care of things by myself," he says with a huff as he tags the scarcely touched records. You pick out a Led Zeppelin album and chuckle to yourself, "That's a nice one, I have it on tape back at my house." You look up to find that he is now paying close attention to you, "Oh yeah? Which Led Zeppelin song is your favorite?”
You grin broadly as you rock the record back and forth, "wow, you're really putting me on the spot right now." Eddie leans against the shelf, deep in thought, "can't say that I have a favorite; I like a lot of their songs, but a favorite very hard." His mouth widens into a toothy grin as you return the smile, his smile lines becoming more obvious as his eyes crinkle slightly, "oh boooo cmon, really you don’t have a favorite?” You mock Eddie while tilting your head back sarcastically.
You both share a genuine laugh it soon dying down as you both get lost in each other’s eyes, You can't recall the last time you actually connected with a guy like this; typically, guys talk about themselves and the girls they want to bone (you, sadly, being one of them), but this brief interaction you had with him was one of the most sincere interactions you've had thus far, despite the fact that you didn't know him all that well.
Eddie soon blinks out of the trance shaking his head in embarrassment “I’m uhh, I’m Eddie by the way” he eagerly extends his hand for a handshake. “yeah I know it’s embroidered into your vest there” you point at the white stitched name on the vest “oh yeah right it is my bad” he bashfully raises his hand to the back of his neck rubbing it while avoiding eye contact with you.
You fumble around with the record in your hand and say, "I'm y/n," as Eddie raises an eyebrow and smiles slightly. "You go to Hawkins high right? Friends with Robin Buckley?” "Yes I do, and uhh yeah I'm friends with Robin she's basically my ride or die," you confess. "I'm not like a creep or anything like that we have a mutual friend group outside of school and one of the guys we're friends with is in my party," Eddie says, a tiny nervous blush forming on his cheeks.
“Your..party?” Your brows furrow at him, "oh! Yeah, I play Dungeons & Dragons with my friends; it's kind of like a fantasy game," Eddie says, rambling on about the foundations of his game and how he serves as their dungeon master.
“I’m surprised you’re even talking to me with me being the town ‘freak’ and all” he air quotes around freak as he rolls his eyes “I’ve heard your name through the halls and your tittle of freak devil worshipper but I’ve never believed it since I didn’t even know you at the time” Eddie gives you a sincere smile; he likes knowing that at least one person outside of his friend group doesn't see him as the terrible things people call him, whether it's to his face or through the halls.
You never agreed with what everyone called Eddie you’ve seen him around school but it was mostly for a split second none the more you always thought he was just misunderstood I mean if Robin knows him then he can’t be a terrible person.
You and Eddie chat some more, talking about music, school, just anything, standing in this music store talking to Eddie has been better than any date that you’ve been on, he was funny, charming, and passionate about the things he love “well I don’t wanna hold you up any longer so how about I ring that up for you and you can be on your way” He gestures to the record in your hands, and you look down surprised you're still holding it because you've been completely distracted by him “oh uhh yeah sure” you and Eddie walk towards the front of the store as he makes his way behind the counter.
You take out your wallet and give him the cash, "Oh, and keep the change," you say with the same grin that he had before. You're not sure what made you so anxious, but something about him made your heart beat quicker and your palms all sweaty. Eddie delivers you the record in a bag, and you shyly wave at him as you head out the door, "Hey, wait up!" You're caught off guard as Eddie leaps over the countertop and approaches you, "I know we just met and you can absolutely shoot me down, but I was umm wondering if you'd want to maybe go on a date?"
In anticipation of your response, Eddie crosses his arms over his body while fidgeting with the hem of his vest. Maybe this was your opportunity to finally have a successful date and possibly even develop a genuine relationship. As you continue to be silent, Eddie becomes anxious, "If you don't want to, that's great. I'm not trying to pressure you into anything; I just thought you were pretty and we like the same music." Eddie begins to ramble fiddling with his rings, his shyness making you smile “yes Eddie I would like to go on a date with you” Eddie stops his rambling as his eyes meet yours.
“Wait, really?” His eyes beam with a big smile on his face “oh shit uhh let me give you my number” He pats himself down in an effort to locate his notepad, then gestures towards the rear room “g’me one second I think I left it in the back” after that he darts towards the back which you assumed was Otis’ office and the break room, his head pops back out as he jogs towards you his loose curls bouncing as he walks.
He takes out a pen from his back pocket and writes down his number before handing you the piece of paper “here, uhh give me a call when you want no pressure of course and we can talk about that date” his excitement warms your heart, It's not often that a guy is this excited to go on a date with you, you admired his excitement so maybe this time will be different. “yeah I’ll definitely call you don’t worry” you pocket the piece of paper as you fiddle with the bag in your hand.
You glance up to find Eddie still grinning at you with his huge silly grin still covering his cute face. He shakes his head once he notices that he’s staring "Oh yeah, uhh, I'll see you later. Maybe at school or here again. Hopefully soon." You look down making eye contact with him through your eyelashes “don’t worry you’ll see me again Eddie” he smiles at that piece of information “Great, bye y/n.”
He gives you an open mouthed smile as he fiddles with the pen in his hand, you walk backwards towards the door with a wave before turning around and walking home. As you were leaving, though, you caught a glimpse of Eddie pumping his fist in the air in celebration , which made you giggle.
You've never made a guy as nervous as Eddie was, and it was cute. As you walk the remaining distance home, all you can think about is Eddie—when you'll talk to him again, whether he'll pick up the phone when you call, and so many other things. But the main thing was his smile—that big idiotic smile he mostly kept on his face the entire time.
———
You plop down on your bed kicking your feet in the air as you hold the phone up to your ear “Wait so you genuinely like this guy?” Robins muffled voice speaks through the receiver “well I don’t know if I like like him I just think he’s cute and kind and cute..” you trail off as your overly broad smile causes the apples of your cheeks to ache. “you already said cute y/n and you met him in the music store?” Robin shared the same amount of enthusiasm as you did “yeah! And he actually has good taste in music” you shift into your side playing with the hem of your shirt.
Robin ooo’s “so who is this cute, kind guy with good music taste” She pry’s making you smile even harder which you didn’t even know was remotely possible “his name is Eddie, you might know him he said you guys had a mutual friend group” You wind the phone line around your finger, “wait, Eddie as in Eddie Munson!” Robin squeals making you chuckle, you felt like a 14 year old girl talking about her crush to her friends at a sleep over “yeah he’s actually really sweet” you coo making Robin fake gag “well he seems kind of dorky and weird to me plus he always smells like cigarettes” you scoff and smack your lips “yeah whatever Rob” you chuckle.
You and Robin talk for another 20 minutes before she calls it a night and goes to bed. You’re sat on your bed reading a book, your eyes drift from the pages and to the little piece of folded paper, you grab it opening it to see Eddie’s phone number written in a messy and hurriedly manner a skull with heart eyes scribbled next to the digits, you peak at the clock it being 10pm you contemplated calling him afraid he might be asleep and you’ll be on the phone with an angry and sleepy Eddie.
The notion fumbles about in your head for another ten second before you pick up the phone and dial the number, the phone rings as you grow more anxious with each buzz it goes of for a while before you begin to feel defeated and give up until the phone stops ringing “Munson residence, how may I help you.” His voice is deep and raspy when he speaks into the receiver causing you to remain speechless “hello?” You snap out of it stumbling to speak. “Oh, uh hey Eddie it’s me y/n from the music store” your voice was gentle and nervous.
“Oh y/n hey!” You hear shuffling on the other side of the line causing your eyebrow to quirk up. “Wasn’t expecting you to call tonight” you can feel his smile through the phone which causes you to smile aswell “yeah I didn’t wanna seem desperate but I found the courage to call so here I am” you say, and he offers you a laugh in return.
You guys continue to talk throughout the night as it gets later and later. The conversation switched between various topics such as music, random stories from your childhoods, and you even learned that he's in a band, which you think is cool. He plays you a little bit of something he’s been working on before you eventually drift off to sleep with the phone steady on your pillow. Eddie soon notices the light snores and smiles to himself.
Before getting comfy in bed, he stretches his body, the noises of muted movement can be heard from your side of the line
He murmurs softly, "Goodnight sweetheart," before putting the phone on his bed and smiling as he closes his eyes letting the peacefulness of sleep soon consume him.

Matthew Ridgers interview with my Mexican Grandmother (NANA)
Tumblr media
I interviewed my grandmother on my moms side of the family. She is Aurelia Ruiz Hernandez today she is 72 living in Lakewood California was born and raised in Mexico. She lived in Baja Rosarito. She lived in a nice house near the water with her parents and her siblings.
She has 12 other siblings although she lived with 8 of her siblings. Some of the other children have moved out of the house or back to America.
Her Dad Valentino Ruiz was from Michoacan Mexico, and her mom doesn't know where she was born. She told my nana that she remembers going with her dad across the border to the USA in Texas. Her mom grew up in America and met her husband Valentino in California when he had just moved there. They lived in Southern California and had 4 kids. Her parents were living a happy life until the great depression came in the 1930’s making them move back to mexico. When they moved back, they bought a ranch and a house near the beach. Their kids having their American citizenship they wanted to live near the border and decided to move to Rosarito Mexico. Her dad was a farmer having many animals and herbs on his ranch. With her parents living in America, they knew how to cook many different types of dishes like pancakes along with the traditional Mexican food. (Rosarito Beach postcard)
My grandmother's childhood consisted of waking up in the room she shared with her sister Genie and getting ready to walk to school. It was a few miles walk to her school which required a uniform. In school she liked learning about history and science, but she enjoyed playing at recess even more. She enjoyed playing sports like soccer, volleyball and hopscotch. On the weekends she was able to wear her normal outfits with her colorful dresses and heels. Her house was right next to the beach and would go swimming all the time. They would all walk down to the beach from their house. Her and her friends would be out all day going on adventures. One of their favorite things to do was ride horses together. She says it was completely different from now being outside all day and not being around any screens. In the nighttime she would do things with her family and go dancing where a band would play orchestra songs. If not dancing, she would go to the theater and watch films. On the long breaks like the spring breaks and such she would visit her siblings living in America. They lived in Santa Ana and Orange County. This is where my grandmother would go shopping and really get an influence of American Culture. She loved to shop in Orange County and in San Diego. America is where she also got her love for music. She really liked to listen to rock n roll. In this time in America, it was a time that was called the “British Invasion” for music. With the likes of The Beatles and Rolling stones being very popular. This is where her love for these bands come from.
As a teenager she saw a better opportunity in America so that's where she went. She moved to America first living with her siblings while she saved up money for her own place by cleaning houses and babysitting. She met my grandfather and a few years later my mom was born. When my mom was a child, her dad passed away. My grandma remarried a few years after and had one more kid, my aunt Michelle. They lived in Huntington Beach enjoying the wonderful weather and beautiful beaches.

TOP 13 Scorpions Songs of all Time!!!
As some other ARTICLES of mine, I presented this time ago to some music magazines and magazines with music sections...enjoy!!!
Top 13 Scorpions Songs Of All Time. By David del Real. Number THIRTEEN: Don´t Believe Her. We start our list with a "sui generis" topic. A friend preventing another from mingling with a specific very dangerous woman. How many times haven´t we tried to prevent a good friend that is about to get in trouble for dating a heartless woman from doing it? Well, in this song the character that is telling the story has a good reason to be worried about his friend: this woman broke his own heart to pieces in the past! With this first great song we start the list of the Top 13 Songs of the most successful German and Continental Europe band of all time. Excerpt from the Lyrics: " A perfect strangerShe knows the game,She´ll promise heaven on earthBut don´t believe her " Number TWELVE:We Were Born To Fly. A strong romantic song that tackles the dream of everlasting love. It talks about the story of two lovers that have been apart for some time. The one that is patiently waiting tells that forgiveness has nothing to do with being together again, it only has to do with love as these two lovers "were born to fly". One of the many Scorpions songs that make our chests feel a little larger and lighter arrives in our 12th place and constitutes the first love song that made it to our list. Excerpt from the Lyrics: "We were born to flyTo reach beyond the skyTo carry on forever after" Number ELEVEN:Hit Between The Eyes. Defining with unique style a lot of our current life-style where all the great Metropolis of the world are plagued with delinquency and we are never sure who stands two corners ahead, this song compares our today´s world with a war front. One day, in two hundred or three hundreds years from now, when people ask about how was it to live in New York, Mexico, Berlin or Tokyo in the last days of the Twentieth Century and beginning of the Twenty-first, one of the answers will be: Listen "Hit Between The Eyes" from Scorpions. Excerpt from the Lyrics: "Late at night when you´re all aloneTake a ride to the danger zoneIf someone wants to cut you down to sizeYou never argue with a loaded forty-five" Number TEN:Lady Starlight. A sweet prayer, almost like a whisper, arrives in our number 10. Directly from the "Animal Magnetism" album that owns both Gold and Platinum Records, we have this ballad that gives us that sensation of being lying in the grass, watching at the stars wondering if someone much wiser than us could listen to our sorrow and share a word of relief. A similar feeling to listening "Let it be" from the Beatles or watching to the final sentences of "American Beauty" said by "Lester Burnham" (Kevin Spacey) floods from us when we hear the sweet melody of "Lady Starlight". Excerpt from the Lyrics: "I see the stars, they´re miles and miles awayLike our love,Lady Starlight, help me to find my love" Number NINE:Tease Me, Please Me. A very adventurous and exciting song with a sexy video to promote it. Belonging to "Crazy World", their most famous album ever, this song with its light-hearted lyrics and direct style has become one of the favorite of the fans world-wide for two and a half decades...and counting!!! Excerpt from the Lyrics: " Never wasted any timeNever missed a beatTotal satisfaction Always guaranteed " Number EIGHT:I Can´t Explain. A classic love ballad that got number 5 in 1989´s Billboard Hit Singles and pretty much describes that awkward yet necessary feeling in life of getting in love. Why is it necessary?...well I don´t know... "I can´t explain". Excerpt from the Lyrics: "Can´t explainI think it´s love, try to say it to you when I feel blue" Number SEVEN:No One Like You. Arriving number one of 1982´s Billboard Hit Singles, "No One Like You" definitively deserves a place in our list. With a decisive and open style, it can´t be omitted in any serious Rock/Metal collection. Excerpt from the Lyrics: "There´s no one like youI can´t wait for the nights with youI imagine the things we´ll doI just wanna be loved by you" Number SIX:Holiday. A soft ballad of a lover asking to allow her lady let him take her away from the harshness of life for some fun.One of their many songs that invites to daydreaming and seeing into the horizon, this one should definitively make it also to the top ten romantic songs of all time. Excerpt from the lyrics: "Let me take you far away You´d like a holiday Exchange your troubles for some loveWherever you are" Number FIVE:Always Somewhere. Always Somewhere in the discography of any great group or interpreter we find a song (or many) about loving from afar and the craving for seeing each other. Of course Scorpions is no exception to the rule. In this specific song, the Scorpions seem to share with us the experience of being out in a Tour away from their girlfriends and wives. Coming back and forth from the hotels, the lost calls, the missing, the different cities and the joy of the promise of returning home. Excerpt from the lyrics: "Always somewhereMiss you where I´ve beenI´ll be back to love you again" Number FOUR:Rock You Like A Hurricane. Covered more than 150 times by different musicians, Rock You Like A Hurricane is an hymn to party and having fun. Definitively one of the main songs responsible for their 100, 000, 000 records sold world-wide, it could even compete with our number one to be this Hannover´s Rock and Metal group´s signature song. Excerpt from the lyrics: "More days to comeNew places to goI´ve got to leaveIt`s time for a show" Number THREE:Still Loving you. When talking to other Scorpions fans I came to the realization that "Still Loving You" is not only the favorite Scorpions song for many of them, but also one of their top 5 songs of all time. Soft and melancholic, yet still full of energy, "Still Loving You" proudly gets to accomplish a place between the big three of our list. Excerpt from the lyrics: "If we´d go again All the way from the startI would try to change The things that killed our love"
Number TWO:Send Me An Angel. Last from the "Crazy World" album released in November of 1990, Send Me An Angel is with all probability, one their finest songs ever. A deep feeling and sensation travels through the spine when we begin hearing its lyrics while listening its soft chords and imagining ourselves all the times we have been in the same position asking an angel to be sent to us in times of despair. Excerpts from the lyrics: "The wind will blow into your face,As the years pass you by" "The wise man said just raise your handAnd reach out for the spell" Number ONE:Wind Of Change. No other Scorpions song is better known to the world that Wind Of Change. From the inspiration of Klaus Meine, vocalist of the group, and having its roots in the late Soviet Union days and associated in our minds to the Fall of Berlin´s Wall thanks to a Wayne Isham-directed video, we have a ballad full of hope and daydreaming.  With versions in English (original), Russian and Spanish, "Wind Of Change" is for sure their most memorable ballad to date. Some hints for listening to this song: Moskva is the way to say Moscow in Russian, The Gorky Park is a big Park in the center of the city, named that way after writer "Maksim Gorki" and balalaika is a Russian chords instrument (you remember Doctor Zhivago´s movie, right?). Excerpt from the lyrics: "Take me to the magic of the momentOn a glory night Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams With you and me"

Hi! I love and 100% agree with your post about albums/Album Era. I even expressed the same sentiment in discussion with my gf a few weeks ago. I absolutely adore just laying back and playing an album from start to finish uninterrupted, really engaging with it and letting it wash over me.
Anyway! I wanted to ask if you could list your favorite albums (organized in any way you wish, by decade or by genre, whatever etc) and maybe if you have the interest/time maybe a blurb about why you love the album?
thank you so much ! Oh and I hope you a great day! :)
hi!! thank you so much!! i agree - it's so nice to just... actually take the time with music these days when it's so easy to let things pass you by or listen passively. i listen to music most of the time so i know sometimes it can just be background noise, but i do really love sitting down and engaging with it properly.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to The Fifteenth Amendment (1870), Akarova, John Astin, Warren Beatty, Joey Castillo, Tracy Chapman, Eric Clapton, Daisy Coleman, Robbie Coltrane, Miles Davis’s 1970 BITCHES BREW LP, Celine Dion, Graeme Edge, Francisco Goya, MC Hammer, the Jeopardy game show (1964), Norah Jones, Charles Lightroller, Lene Lovich, singer-songwriter Don Malliband, Hayashibara Megumi, Kacey Musgraves’s 2018 GOLDEN HOUR album, Walter Piston’s 1951 4th Symphony, the 1946 Arlen-Mercer musical “St. Louis Woman” w/Pearl Bailey & the Nicholas Brothers, Ximo Tebar, Jay Traynor (Jay & The Americans)—good to have met you, Vincent van Gogh, Randy VanWarmer, (the original) Sonny Boy Williamson, and the great American singer-songwriter Frankie Laine. Born of Italian parents, Laine was influenced by opera and blues, particularly Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong—who Laine called “my idol.” Laine’s early career had many setbacks and let-downs and, after threatening to quit music at least six times. Then in 1946 he was “discovered” by Hoagy Carmichael, which led to Laine’s breakout hit “That’s My Desire” (now a jazz standard). Concurrently he discovered a niche singing in films.
He signed to Mercury Records, then switched to Columbia, and the hits (and royalty checks) rolled in. He was heralded as an innovator for his unique vocal technique and masculine tone. Like Bessie Smith, Laine’s voice projected and could fill a hall without a microphone. One critic described Laine as “a big lad with steel tonsils who belted out torch blues while stomping his size twelve feet...he owed nothing to Crosby or Sinatra...” In contrast to the smooth balladeer of the era, Laine would bend notes and sing around the chordal context of a note rather than to sing the note straight, and he stressed each rhythmic downbeat. Like Johnnie Ray, Laine was first cast as an R&B/jazz singer and is now regarded as a forerunner of rock & roll, influencing Elvis Presley and Ray Charles (who admitted to mimicking Laine), and Laine was later name-checked by The Beatles. Laine, however, was able to branch out into folk, gospel, pop and, famously, the Cowboy/Western theme songs imbedded in pop culture: “Gunfight at the OK Corral,” “Rawhide,” “3:10 to Yuma,” and many more. His Campbell Soup “Manhandler” commercial hasn’t been on the air for decades, but people are still singing it. In his long career he had more than 70 charted records, 21 gold records, and global sales of over 100 million records. He was still performing at age 93 when he passed away in 2007.
Laine’s 1949 cover of the folk-spiritual “That Lucky Old Sun” became his 5th gold record, perhaps because a lot of working people could relate to it. The lyrics of the song contrast the toil and hardship of the subject’s life with the obliviousness of the natural world. Yet he sees a silver lining and God's deliverance behind it all. Inspired by “Ol’ Man River,” “Lucky Old Sun” was written in 1949 by big band musician Beasley Smith and prolific Tin Pan Alley lyricist Haven Gillespie—who also wrote "You Go To My Head" (another favorite of mine). “Lucky Old Sun” gained presence with me after hearing Brian Wilson's 2007 concept album based on this song. In 2020 I added it to my set list for when I perform in assisted living homes. My arrangement blends the definitive Laine recording with the soul of Louis Armstrong's cover (in 1949 both artists released "competing versions"). Meanwhile, HB Frankie, and thank you for giving us years of amazing songs.

Dec. 6, 1968: Beggars Banquet released
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1968, the 9th U.S. album from The Rolling Stones. Earlier this year I got to review the Record Store Day reissue of the album. I'd definitely put this up there with Let It Bleed and Exile on Main Street in the pantheon of Classic Stones albums. Happy 55th BB!
Dec. 6, 2013: Inside Llewyn Davis opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2013, the Coen Brothers' criminally underrated folk musician epic was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 10 ILD!
Dec. 10, 1993: Wayne's World 2 opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1993, the sequel to Wayne's World was released! It might not be as loved as the original, but it is better than people think. I wrote about this in 2018 and director Stephen Surjik wrote me back with some thoughts. In 2022, I saw it on the big screen at Nice, a Fest. Happy 30th WW2!
Dec. 10, 2003: Big Fish opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2003, one of Tim Burton's most underrated movies was released. Taking Burton's visual style and combining it with a family drama with fantasy elements was a gamble that paid off. It's something that feels new each time I've seen it since. Happy 20th Big Fish!
Dec. 11, 1998: Rushmore and A Simple Plan both open
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Dec. 1998, two of my favorite movies from that year opened on the same day. Here is my piece I wrote about Wes Anderson's film and Sam Raimi's film. Happy 25th Rushmore an ASP!
Dec. 12, 1973: The Last Detail opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1973, Hal Ashby (who was on a roll at the time) had one of his best released. It was one of the great movies of the 70s. It was also one of my Top 5 Boston Movies of All Time! Jack Nicholson was in rare form as he and Otis Young played Navy men transporting younger sailor Randy Quaid to the NH Navy prison and showing him a good time along the way. Happy 50th TLD!

Dec. 16, 1988: Rain Man opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1988, the Oscar-winning Best Picture and biggest grossing film of 1988 was released. With the exception of parodies (i.e. The Hangover's Vegas gambling scene), nobody talks about this as much. The road movie of long lost brothers one autistic (Dustin Hoffman) and the other selfish used-car guy (Tom Cruise) was actually quite touching. Sure it was the 80s feel-good movie era and whatnot, but the performances were among both actors' best. Happy 35 RM!
Dec. 17, 1973: Sleeper opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1973, one of the funniest movies ever made about the future was released. Woody Allen was in his prime when he played a man who is cryogenically frozen in 1973 and is defrosted 200 years later. This is definitely one of his funniest ones. Happy 50th Sleeper!

Hi friend, 🎅🏼 here!!
I will definitely be checking out those albums, they sound great!! also, do you have a favourite Duran Duran member?
Back To The Egg!! As an avid Wings fan, I feel ashamed for saying I don’t believe I have listened to that album. I might have heard a few songs off of it, but now that you’ve mentioned it I’m gonna have to give it a listen since I’ve been on a Wings kick lately haha!
I think Abbey Road is a pretty solid album. Love the Golden Slumbers medley off that album. The first ever Beatles album I ever bought was Let It Be and I remember instantly falling in love with it! I find it ironic that that was the first Beatles album I fell in love with since it was the last one they recorded together, but honestly I love the vibes from it ✨
Hey there! 🎅😊 Hope you're doing well 💙
Why yes I do have a favorite, it's John Taylor, the gorgeous creature I have as my icon! 😁😍
Yes I encourage everyone to give "Back To The Egg" a listen. Along with "So Glad To See You Here" my favorites are "Arrow Through Me", "Baby's Request", "Getting Closer", "We're Open Tonight" and those medleys "After the Ball / Million Miles" and "Winter Rose / Love Awake". Let me know what you think when you get a chance to listen through the album. 🙂 I always forget that "Goodnight Tonight" was not on the album but was released as a single around the same time. Highly recommend that song too though.
Love the Golden Slumbers medley as well 💛 it sounds to me like Paul could be singing a page from his diary, even though I know he rarely writes autobiographical songs.
Watching the Get Back movie really brought the songs from "Let It Be" into a whole new light for me. It was great to see all those songs being performed. Hopefully you got a chance to watch it! Yes, there was a lot of tension during those recordings but so many sweet and funny moments too. If you've seen it, let me know your thoughts on it 🙂
I also think "For You Blue" is one of George's best Beatles songs 👍
Have a lovely week 💙

HEY YOU! Are you a classic rock fan that’s looking for some modern day rock bands that sound like the 70s and 80s? Well boy, do I have the list for you!
Greta Van Fleet - I’m sure you guys know who these are, sound a lot like led zeppelin. I would recommend their newest song ‘My way soon’
The Rockyts - These guys are a young Canadian band that sound like The Beatles. The lead singers voice is a lil raspy but he is young and will probably grown into his voice. I would recommend ‘All of the time’
Thunder Mother - An all female Swedish hard rock band. They sound like if AC/DC and Guns ‘n’ roses had a baby. I would recommend ‘Driving in style’
Reckless Love - A Finnish glam metal band that sound a bit like Poison and Motley Crue. I would go ahead and recommend ‘Hot’
Barrera - A female fronted  English classic / psych rock band. Currently they only have 3 songs out (I’d recommend Can’t help) but an album is coming soon!
Exxocet - This is a Chilean glam metal band, but they’ve mixed it up with their own sound as well. I would highly recommend ‘Screams from the south’
The New Roses - A German rock band that’s well... Good ‘ol fashion rock ‘n’ roll. I would recommend ‘Thirsty’
Glitter dogs - A rock band. They sound a bit like Black Sabbath, Quiet riot and foreigner mixed together. I would recommend ‘Welcome to the party’
H.E.A.T - A Swedish hard rock band, they sound like Motor head and Guns ‘N’ Roses. I would recommend ‘1000 miles’.
The Dead Daisies - A Swedish Rock ‘n’ roll band. They remind me of Whitesnake. I would recommend ‘Fortune son’
Miley Cyrus - (No, I’m not kidding) Miley has recently done some amazing covers including heart of glass and zombie. Soon she will be releasing a rock album. She’s doing songs with Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks and Billy Idol!
I’m sure there are so many more, so feel free to add your own!
Hey now, let’s not forget about those classic rockers that are still going!
AC/DC - Their newest album ‘Power up’ is out and it’s one hell of an album, still sounds like the 80s.‘Through the mists of time’ Is probably my favorite
The Foo fighters  - (not classic but idc) They have a new album coming out! Whoo hoo!
Michael Monroe - Despite going more of the pop punk route he somehow still sounds (and rocks!) like he did in the 80s, I would recommend  ‘Ballad of the lower east side’
Bon Jovi - Yes, these dudes are still somehow going. I personally actually really like their newer music and this it’s petty cool
Metallica - I’m sure all fans know that these guys are still goin!
There are many many more, so feel free to add!

beatles harmonies that cured my depression.
It is important that i discuss this. Well, not really important I just really wanted to share. This is in no particular order either it's just the ones that come to the top of my head lol. Feel free to reblog and share your own 😎
1. The "Woahoooah AHHHHH" from When I Get Home.
Not even words can describe the battery power that starts coursing through my veins when I hear this harmony. I cant even,....LIKE HELLO??? i have never heard such a blessing... Such a well-fitting triplet of voices singing a vowel thats made me feel like i can run 10 miles straight. They aren't real. The Beatles, of course. To this day I don't understand how this harmony exists in this universe. My ears melt everytime. One of my favorites, in case you couldn't tell.
2. The obvious.. "yeah yeah yeah YEAHH" from She Loves You :)
LET ME TELL YOU. oh my god let me tell yo u .. Way back when, when I was a new fan... Good lord. I was literally ascending. ASCENDING. i felt every inch of my body start to lift off the ground. Im sure im not the only one who's experienced this. I remember thinking 'how the wiggle wubble do 3 men sound so GOOD TOGETHER' IT DOES NOT ADD UP PEOPLE THE BEATLES HAVE TO BE SOME SORT OF ROBOTIC BOY BAND GROWN IN A LAB THIS ISNT POSSIBLE how do we live on the same dimensional plane that this harmony lives on..
3. "The magical mystery tour, is coming to take you away, Coming to take you away!" from Magical Mystery Tour.
...
guys. Guys you dont understand. This one line, adds, YEARS. LITERAL YEARS TO MY LIFE SPAN. At this point I am fully immortal. The "coming to take you awayyy" makes my heart POUND. i love this song so much... And this line especially... It makes me go insane. Basically the beatles are manic melody genuises that have successfully spread one of the biggest diseases in musical history. Personally, I think this line was a clear example of why.
4. "Last night I said these words to my girl", "Please pleaase me, oh yeah, like i please you...", "...With you! Oh yeah, why do you make me blue" from Please Please Me.
do i even have to say anything. Well, i dont but i will for the sake of the post. There is so much. So much. About this song that I. I cant even,,. I would choose this song over SO MANY BEATLES SONGS DUDE. not that its cause i think its better than all the others but it just holds such a special place in my heart. Its the only song thats Ever made me feel some intense wave of nostalgia for a decade i wasnt even born in. Its one of the songs that continue to make me question the beatles existance. How could something like this ever come to reality. My brain has never been so pleased in its life.
5. "Carve your number on my wall and maybe you will get a call from me" from If I Needed Someone.
The way that this song was added into my Liked playlist SO QUICKLY...... God. I love george. Hes my favorite after all. Rubber Soul as a whole makes me feel warm inside but this song and this one line just hits so much more intensely for some reason... Their voices just flow insanely well and I just DONT UNDERSTAND HOW. its like an angel choir making its way through the clouds as you see the gate to heaven start to appear. Wonderful song and mind-blowing harmony... The beat is so good too and i just explode.
6. The "ahhhhh Ahhhhh AHhhhh *inhale* AHHHhhhh AHHHHH *inhale* AHHHHHH" from Day Tripper.
HOLY JESUS CHIRST THIS SONG HAS SO MUCH TO UNPACK... There are undeniably A BUNCH of other flawless harmonies in this song but my god the beatles knew what they were doing. Thats all I'm going to say really.... But once again. Power. In my veins. A few listens to this song and you'll find yourself having the strength of 1,000 men.
7. "Oh, now", "All I want is you" from Dig a Pony.
FIRST LYRIC... ITS LITERALLY 2 WORDS AND YET IT CONTINUES TO BLOW MY MIND. Something about the "Oh" ...... Its like an arrow passing through my heart I dont even know guys. Im not lying when I say it makes me feel like im floating. It makes me feel like i can quite literally grow wings and fling myself towards the sun. Dont even get me started on "All I want is you".......it literally triples the effect. It makes me go ballistic. The song is just mindless lyrics but the harmonieeesss.....
8. "Ah girlll.... *inhaeahelrlsseeesh* Girrll...." from Girl.
no words. Like. No words. I cant even. I seriously dont need to explain this one. Im just going to drop the isolated vocals version because if you havent listened to it you are MISSING OUT... you thought the originally recorded song was the greatest cause of your heart palpitations? Well you thought WRONG.
THIS IS.
youtube
9. "I love youwoowooowoowoooo...", "ask me WHYY..", "I can't believe.. Its happened to MEeee", "i cant concieve *doo doo doo do doo* of anymore *dun dun dun* MISERY" from Ask Me Why.
GOD OK LISTEN im just gonna say this now i absolutely adore and favor the please please me album so much i dont care what anyone says ok im such a sucker for their early sappy love songs ITS SO MANY GOOD HARMONIES ESPECIALLY FROM THIS ONE. MY GOD i listen to this and i feel like im with a lover late at night and we're like at one or the others house keeping each other warm and being all romantic and happy. Specifically the part that goes "ask me whyy I say i love you.. (OOOOHHHOOOO) and im always thinking of youuhoohohoo..." LIKE COME ON PLEAEE IT MAKES ME FEEL SO WARM INSIDE AND I SMILE IN AN INSTANT GOD I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH. Whenever i think im sad i go "no im not because Please Please Me." And its like all the sudden everything im sad about just poof disappears!
10. "If theres anything that you want.. IF THERES ANYTHING I CAN DOOOO" from From Me To You.
I am so in love with this song you guys i have no idea I LOVE IT SO MUCH. IT HAS THIS LITTLE SWING TO IT SPECIFICALLY BETWEEN THESE 2 LINES THAT MY BRAIN SEEKS FOR NEARLY EVERY DAY. the amount of blessing i get from this song is more than i can comprehend its literally insane i cant even. How does someone do this how did the beatles make music guys I am seriously so dumbfounded like they just sat there and wrote banger after banger like WHAT. this song makes me believe that life isnt as horrible as it seems and if im lucky enough i can just sing and dance to this song for all of eternity. There are also so many other good harmonies in this one as well...
---
In conclusion the beatles have had a chokehold on me for 3 years but I mean their stupid groundbreaking songs keep drawing me back in so.... This has also made me come to the conclusion that the Beatles simply arent real because I still dont believe a band can not only write consistent hits, but also harmonize in a way that causes me to spin around while doing backflips.
Thank you for your time.

Days Apart - A Llewerius “Playlist”
I’m posting this late af because I’m a bastard.
So like, there are a few songs I like to listen to while drawing these two. Because these songs make me think of them. It’s nowhere near a proper playlist’s worth, but I thought I may as well share them with you for people who were looking for more Llewerius content before me and Lolly are ready to unveil what we’re working on. I’ll even give little explanations as to why they’re up here.
Elaborate Lives & Elaborate Lives (Reprise) from the Aida Soundtrack - This is probably one of the most “out there” choices, which is why it’s at the top, so we can get to the real meat, next. I can’t really explain myself outside of the fact that the Aida musical soundtrack still really moves me and this song always inspires me when I’m drawing more “adversarial” couples, in this case, Louie being deadset in the idea that he doesn’t actually like Ty, Ty being deadset in the idea that he’s straight, and the both of them lamenting in repressed yearning as a result. Naturally, the nature of the reprise in particular is MUCH more serious in the context of the musical, and that’s actually why it inspired the out-of-context drawing I did based on the scenario of THE kiss.
Rezonate’s The Phoenix - Okay. So. I’mma be real with you guys. This is the song that sparked the very concept of the scenario surrounding the kiss. Y’know, THE kiss. It doesn’t actually spoil anything because there are barely any lyrics in the song, and even then, the lyrics are fairly generic. It’s mostly due to the fact that, as I listen to music, I tend to think of what I could potentially animate to it, what feelings I want to express through it, what feelings I think the song expresses to me. And as a result, a specific portion of the song (I will not say which) fine-tuned my brain into thinking “I want to see Ty and Louie in THIS situation”. It was a very rough, very vague, honestly rather strange concept. I relayed the concept to Lolly, and, good gods, she took the inch I offered and gave me a mile in return. The story she managed to concoct from such an odd idea was not only WAY more fleshed out, but also engaging and emotional. I really can’t wait for you all to finally see what she’s done, but for now, you can have the piece that allowed that first little spark of an idea.
Tatsuro Yamashita’s Ride on Time - Obligatory City Pop song because I listen to that too much. Not only is this my favorite Tatsuro Yamashita song, and thus, I must tie it to what I happen to be currently hyperfixated on, but I also really like to consider it a Llewerius song because the lyrics (as far as I can tell from the translation) are about falling in love without even realizing it, and gods does that ring true with our two little disasters here. It’s a bop, please listen.
Cascada’s A Neverending Dream - HELL YEAH BITCHES WE GOT SOME CASCADA ON THE LIST. Honestly you can just throw any Cascada song from the Everytime We Touch album on and I could probably relate it to Llewerius somehow (Except Miracle. Not That One.) But this one in particular makes me think of the Fairytale AU! It’s a good AU and I hope either me or Lolly (or both) have more time to make content for that.
Studio Killers’s Grande Finale - This is actually another song I attribute to multiple pairings, but I feel like it fits here particularly well. Louie inspires Ty to be a better person because Ty thinks so highly of Louie’s ability to use their natural advantages (traits Ty had always considered “evil) for the sake of, as Ty sees it, being a hero. On the flipside, Ty brings out the best in Louie by driving him to put more effort into what he does due to the naturally competitive nature of their relationship, as well as the fact that Ty is able to check Louie on his more... morally unsound behavior, just by having a much stronger moral compass. It just kinda works with this song. These two are the respective “ends” (life is more complicated than that) of their bad sides.
Klaus Veen’s Ordinary Days (V2) - This song is mostly here because most of the Lethal League soundtrack makes me think of Ty, and this is the piece on the soundtrack that most reminds me of Louie, so it kinda of just merges into making me think of the both of them!
HOME’s Resonance - Is it a surprise that this song is here? Maybe?? I dunno. I like this song a lot so I listen to it a lot regardless of what I’m thinking of. But it is relevant, trust me. By now you’ve probably been curious about the drawing atop this post. Well, Louie has spent a lot of nights at Ty’s house as a friend (and, well, moreso because Ty has this inexplicable ability to calm Louie down if he wakes up in the middle of the night anxious, more effectively than anyone else in his life has been able to. But he would never say that out loud. They’re friends, they’re having a sleepover, they’re capable of being normal about it, most of the time) and Ty has a little radio in his room that’s constantly playing at low volume as a “white noise maker”. This song just makes me think about that room, comfortable, nostalgic, sleepy, music coming from somewhere. IDK it works for me.
The Beatles’s You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away - Yeah, I was raised on the Beatles and Jethro Tull, I’m not surprised this made it here. (I’m actually a little bummed I didn’t get any Jethro Tull on this list) This is my favorite (one of my favorites?) Beatles song and I can easily imagine Ty singing this idly while he’s thinking about Louie.
That’s pretty much the end of the list. I wanted to put the Moulin Rouge! version of Your Song on here, but, ehhhh. I like the scenario of Ty becoming flustered and fed up and just belting out a heartfelt serenade to Louie, but part of it just feels too weird to throw into the mix. Instead, let me leave you with this raw line from Moulin Rouge! that’s 100% relevant to these fuckers:
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return”

Various Artists — West Meets East: Indian Music And Its Influence On The West (Cherry Red Records)
Tumblr media
youtube
Many, even most, music fans these days are aware of the influence that Indian music has had on Western musicians. From the mid-1960s onward, thanks to the Beatles, Byrds, Rolling Stones and more, listeners became accustomed to the sound of the sitar and tabla lending an “exotic” air to rock and pop music.
That wasn’t the start of Western music’s inspiration from India, however. This 3CD compilation, West Meets East, investigates earlier examples of how the intrinsic modes of Indian music were absorbed into different forms of Western music, particularly classical music and American jazz. In the latter case, especially, American (and to a lesser extent British) artists discovered that the modal style provided them exciting ways to break away from existing forms and experiment with new sounds.
Each of the three discs here includes examples of the Indian masters mixed in with the artists they inspired, and it’s almost expected that the first piece in the compilation is a raga by Ravi Shankar. By the late 1960s, Shankar was the foremost emissary of Indian music to Western listeners and musicians alike. Even before George Harrison and The Beatles brought his name to the world, he had been visiting the West since the 1930s, travelling with his brother’s band. Here, the 15-minute “Raga Sindhi Bhairavi” is, of course, marvelous. Later appearances are made by Ali Akbar Khan, whose “Evening Raga” is slower and deeper; Sharan Rani, the first woman to play the sarod, who became an important cultural ambassador; Chatur Lai, with an invigorating 18-minute tabla solo; and Ustad Vilayat Khan & Ustad Imrat Khan, whose “Rainy Season Raga” begins slowly, with almost no tabla for the first half, before the storm breaks and the players take it to great intensity. These pieces serve as opportunities to listen for the modalities, forms, and emotions that inspired the other artists featured.
And those artists include some of the greats, those who took their fellow musicians in new directions, due to their openness and appreciation for previously-unheard musical perspectives. The second and third pieces here, following Ravi Shankar’s opening, are by John Coltrane. While the Indian influence may be a little difficult to spot amidst the familiar refrain of “My Favorite Things,” “India” reveals its inspiration both in its name and the repetition which leads to exploratory flights, clearly echoing the raga form. Similarly, the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s “Calcutta Blues” also wears its influence on its sleeve, and it finds the instruments purposely focused more on melody than harmony, with a drum solo that’s particularly reminiscent of how ragas are driven by the tabla rhythms.
The second volume follows the model set by the first, opening with “Left Alone,” a slow, meandering exploration by the Eric Dolphy Quintet. There’s Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” with its unusual bass and twin brass lines, “India” from the always-experimenting Sun Ra, and a piece by Paul Horn, who was honored to be asked by Ravi Shankar to play flute on his essential 1964 album “Portrait of Genius.” Before finishing with the aforementioned “Rainy Season Raga,” we get Miles Davis’ “Milestones,” an intriguing example wherein the horns alternate percussive accents with floating solos, over a flowing rhythm that offers echoes of the first volume’s piece by Shankar.
The collection’s third volume takes a different approach, with an eclectic blend of music from flamenco to Indian film soundtracks and classical compositions. The sitar-like guitar by Gabor Szabo on “El Toro,” with the Chico Hamilton Quintet, matches the droney, accented bass, which evokes Indian styles. It’s very interesting to consider the similarity to raga shown in “Eoc Jerezanos,” by the great flamenco player Sabicas. The two pieces by Yusef Lateef show his overt adoption of Eastern styles: on “Before Dawn” in particular he goes further, playing the Egyptian arghul for a sound that was highly unusual for 1957. The inclusion of several works by the renowned Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray are quite nice, but the reason is somewhat unclear in the context of the “East Meets West” theme of the collection.
The so-called “exotica” composers of the 1950s and 1960s were naturally among those most clearly inspired by the sounds coming from the east, and none more so than Martin Denny and Les Baxter, both included here. The former’s “Moonlight on the Ganges” and the latter’s “Harem Silks from Bombay” could certainly be accused of capitalizing precisely on that “exoticness,” but it must be admitted that the music is wears its inspiration honestly and, particularly in the case of Baxter’s orchestra, is quite well-played.
The last half of the third volume takes a bit of a left turn to focus on composers such as Benjamin Britten, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Béla Bartók. Indian inspiration shows in Ravel’s use of woodwinds in “Little Ugly Girl,” and the meandering, melodic piano in “Ondine.” Debussy, after hearing Indonesian gamelan music for the first time, was inspired to create pieces like “Pagodes,” included here, with piano notes juxtaposed and overlaid in previously-unheard ways. Several pieces from Maurice Delage’s 1952 “Quatre poèmes Hindous” showcase the use of sitar and “exotic” styles.
The collection comes with an extensive booklet offering quotes, historical details and discography information for the artists included, but it would have benefited from more context-setting and drawing lines between people and their works. The focus on jazz in the first two volumes helps, while the third volume feels more scattered and somewhat hurried. It’s possible that shorter pieces would have allowed for more breadth — many of the works here exceed the ten or even 20-minute mark — although, of course, changes in the music over time is one of the characteristics being examined.
West Meets East explores a worthwhile and rewarding subject, and the three discs include some terrific music, so at the very least this collection offers some fine listening. Making connections between works by such jazz greats as Coltrane, Brubeck, Dolphy, Coleman, Davis and the great Indian artists provides for enjoyable critical listening as well. The classical and more eclectic offerings can be considered a bonus.

Aesthetic Approach
I watch as my girlfriend Ella cuts out intricate patterns into folded over newspaper. Her long, curly, dark brown hair held back in a ponytail slides back and forth against her shoulder as her head nods along to the beat of the music we put on in the background. We act like it’s background music while we talk about almost nothing but music.
Like right now, we’re discussing exactly who we’re listening to.
“No one is questioning if Eddie Vedder is a beautiful man,” I say with an amused shake of my head. I stretch across the bed and pretend that I don’t have photographic evidence open in the Pinterest app on my phone.
Music is our constant. It’s smack in the middle of the overlapping Venn diagram of us, and if we wanted to be a little extra, we could create a web from that one theme, “music,” where we’re even further connected. Right now that main point from “music” that’s connecting us is the band Pearl Jam.
My favorite member is, ironically, not even in the band anymore – Jack Irons. He was their drummer from 1995-1998, but what he contributed to the band was, to me, more interesting than what anyone else in the band added, though that doesn’t count the more permanent, original members. I still say that Jack is my favorite.
Ella’s favorite is Jeff Ament. When she first told me that, I thought it was kind of funny because he’s such a stereotypical, athletic male, and I guess I figured she might align herself more with one of the less-stereotypically-masculine members…until I remembered that Jeff’s an artist.
Ella is actually a brilliant artist, able to create these bizarre multimedia sculptures with themes from seemingly unconnected objects. (Like right now she’s making something with cut-shaped newspaper, plastic water bottles, and necklace chains.) She’s also rather analytical, so I love to observe how her art is created from several different angles as she tries to take into account the different ways people see things. You might say her art is, therefore, easily accessible, but if you saw it, I’m not sure you would think so. I say that as her girlfriend – someone she trusts to survey her before, during, and after process  – and as someone who doesn’t know a thing about art. So, I’m being honest.
“Well, I don’t think people would think he’s a work of art the way I do, A,” she retorts, her tongue tucked between her lips as she snips away corners of paper.
I roll my eyes. “Everyone is a work of art if you look at them on a deeper level than just what’s on the surface.”
“Exactly!” she says as she drops a few tiny triangles of paper. I watch them flutter to the floor. “But not everyone does. I mean, I don’t think any of us are completely capable of considering everyone on a deeper level. But trying is a good start.”
I nod and look toward the window where the sunlight is dimming. The sky is a pastel shade of blue, and cloudless. The sunset won’t be as remarkable as it is when the sky is covered with a smattering of clouds. I only know that because the best sunsets I’ve seen with Ella have been on days where the sky was streaked with cirrus clouds.
“Okay,” I begin, thinking of a challenge for her suddenly. “What’s your favorite PJ album based on its album art?”
I watch as she opens her mouth quickly to reply, then closes it and begins to stare off. Her thinking face. Her deep thinking face. It’s a beautiful sight; her dark brown eyes stare off into space that always feels like a million miles away from me, and the dimple embedded into her brown cheek relaxes as her mouth straightens. It’s one of my favorite sights on the entire fucking planet. But I haven’t been able to tell her that. I’m afraid it’ll make her self-conscious and she’ll never want to think deeply around me again. What a loss that would be. Also, she’d probably call me gay, which I already know I am.
“All I can think is that everyone would say No Code or some shit just because it’s made up of a bunch of Polaroids.”
“Ouch!” I say, feigning hurt as I place my hand over my heart. No Code is my favorite Pearl Jam album. “What about Riot Act, though? A shitload of people have tattoos of the skeletons, you know.”
“Yeah, yeah,” she waves a dismissive hand, then pauses. “I don’t know if I’d call them posers or legit dedicated fans.”
I know she’s referring to the fact that the band got the most flack during their Riot Act tour because it was the first time, per “Bu$hleaguer,” that they’d been so transparently political. Probably only the most dedicated fans could stand them through that little show. But undoubtedly, the band’s been political since the very beginning, hence: posers.
“No, no,” I say quickly, moving on as I try to resist laughing. “It’s DEFINITELY Avocado.” Never mind that I asked her the question in the first place; I figure that when you have a good idea, it’s better to just blurt it out than risk forgetting it.
She shrugs, and I’m only slightly disappointed that she doesn’t laugh.
“Hey, at least it’s more interesting than The Beatles’ White Album.”
Oh, Ella. Making comparisons between Pearl Jam and The Beatles, like going from 0 to 100 in two seconds. That’s so like her.
“Still, why did they choose a fucking avocado? Why not, I don’t know, a clam? Or the stickman? Since it’s their self-titled album?”
“Because they’re Pearl Jam and they can do whatever the fuck they want,” she asserts. I relax. She’s got a good point.
“Okay… But really. Answer?”
Now she giggles. “What is…” she starts as though she’s on Jeopardy. This makes me laugh, even though it’s apparent she’s still thinking and most contestants on Jeopardy who look like that after ringing in don’t end up answering in enough time. I look away from her to the clock, and almost immediately my stomach growls like Pavlov’s dog. I wonder if it’s possible to be conditioned based on something you read.
“I’m going to say Yield,” she concludes after a minute. I hum in a mix of interest and approval and roll off the bed, determined to start cooking dinner.
“Be thinking of your answer why while I make dinner,” I say as I leave the room.
“Sure,” she says in a way I know she’s not thinking about it anymore. “Don’t add pepper to my fucking food!” she calls after me, and I roll my eyes and sigh, but make the mental note for the fiftieth time that I always manage to forget anyway.
As I walk into the kitchen, I put my Pearl Jam playlist on my phone on shuffle and hit the play button. I smile at the light guitar picking that indicates the beginning of “Present Tense.” Coincidentally, it’s the only song on No Code that Ella likes. That alone makes me think how much sense it does make to live in the present tense.

ULTIMATE Beatlemaniac Tag!
I was tagged by @femininehygieneproducts and I LOVE this idea!  Thank you for asking these very important questions:
How long have you been a fan?: Started in 1996 after the Anthology, but before I listened because my dad was a huge fan.
Favorite Beatle: John, used to be George....
Favorite era for music:1964-1966
Favorite era for lewks: Teddy Boys/ Hamburg.  Dirty, greasy boys are my jam!
Favorite song: Um, shit.  Only one?  ‘Happiness Is A Warm Gun’ I always come back to. No, ‘Spoil the Party’.  No wait, ‘In My Life’ damn.
Favorite album: Beatles For Sale or Rubber Soul (Depends on the week)
Unpopular/Controversial Beatles opinion: They ARE Bigger/ Better than Jesus.  Fight me.
A song everyone loves but you dislike: Fucking Yesterday.  Or Get Back.
A song everyone dislikes but you love:  ‘Run For Your Life’. It’s a shout out to an Elvis song, and it doesn’t make me less of a feminist for enjoying it.
Your fantasy involving The Beatles: I just want to hang out and smoke some weed with them, listen to them and talk about music.
Tell us about the moment you knew you were a fan: When I watched the “Free As A Bird’ video on ABC when they aired the Anthology.  I was 12.
Did you ever have a genuine ‘The Beatles suck!’ phase before becoming a fan?:
I briefly shaded my dad for having a Beatles album he kept in his closet, I was like 11 and thought that they were lame because I had never really listened to them.
Favorite Beatles book:  Many Years From Now- Barry Miles
Thoughts on the old generation of fans: They need to wrap their heads around the fact that The Beatles mean LOVE, any kind, between any people.  The Het-washing of the group upsets me.  I hope the newer generation opens their minds to the true meaning of their music and purpose.
If Hollywood were to make a high budget Beatles biopic, what is one thing you desperately hope they include?:  John & Paul’s TRUE relationship.
Do you read/write fanfic?: Yes & Yes
Are you the only one in your family/friend group to enjoy them?:  My spouse was raised an Elvis fan! He has since converted, and my children are drinking the Kool-Aid.
Are you a shipper?:  Eh, I struggle with this phrase....
Favorite movie starring/made by them?:  Help!  The stoner in me loves those baked boys being dumb.  Plus, great soundtrack!
Do you believe in McLennon?:  It’s my religion
General opinions on McLennon?:  It’s real, it happened, and it’s tragic.
If you got to change ONE thing about their history, what would it be and why?:
Brian Epstein Lives.
What song has the best vocals?:  Anna (Go to Him), This Boy, Girl...John melts me into a puddle when I hear these.
What song do you feel had no effort put into it?: ‘When I Get Home’. The fact that he says, “When the cows come home...” I just cringe.  Why was that song given a green light?
What is a well talked about moment in Beatles history you genuinely believe to be false?:  How AMAZING Yoko was when her and John met.  She stalked him and Paul, and introduced him to heroin in his vulnerable state to wear him down.  That’s the tea, sis!
What is something you KNOW to be true, but often gets erased in their history?:   John & Paul we probably romantically involved.
Least favorite look from a Beatle(s):  John’s long hair/beard on Abbey Road.  I can smell him just looking at the pics.
Favorite look from a Beatle(s): 1962, in their leathers with the haircuts before Brian ‘cleaned’ them up! (This is oddly specific)
