Apparently 8/4 vanillas would cost 4 today. This is an 8/4 for 4 with only upside. Power creep is insane. The worst part?

Outside of Commander I dont think this will see play as it has no protection and does nothing the turn it drops. And THAT fact is the scariest part. This card will be unplayed, despite its pushed stats.

This isn't a criticism of Wizards of the Coast, nor is it a defense. Just an observation.

Over the past few years, Magic: The Gathering has gone in the direction of "trying new things"; with the phasing out of the block-model, the introduction of Universed Beyond, the increase in the amount of products, and the increasingly tropey worldbuilding of recent sets like MKM and OTJ, (and whatever the hell Unfinity was trying to be.)

The more new things they try, the more opportunities they have to draw in new players. But the problem with that kind of business model is it gives you less time to fully develop any given idea, and the game starts to feel less cohesive as a result.

Again, not trying to justify or criticise WOTC here, just saying this is a natural consequence of what they've been doing. Magic has been around for over 30 years, and they wouldn't have lasted that long without pushing boundaries and trying new things. But doing that comes with the risk of alienating part of the fanbase you've already built. So if you've been feeling that recent magic products aren't "for you", that's probably because they aren't. The bigger the fanbase, the harder it is to please everyone, which is why they release so many products these days, and of course that has it's own problems.

Additional Murders at Karlov Manor note

So, striking thing about the dead 'Teysa' hand on the Collector booster box art: it's surrounded by rose petals.

They're also visible on the outer art for the bundle.

Meanwhile, the art, by Chris Rallis, for what is (probably) going to be Teysa's card uses two of his previous pieces.

The first is Liliana, Death's Majesty, which is not relevant to the rose petal thing (though it is obviously a deliberate clue and not just a cute easter egg, whatever are you on about). The other is Scion of Opulence... from Crimson Vow Commander.

If you remember Crimson Vow, there were a lot of rose petals there.

Thus, although I have no idea quite why Olivia Voldaren has gotten involved, clearly she is. Somehow. I mean, with the Omenpaths is it truly out of the question?
