Picture by Munir Alawi (I think)
There are a few versions of this on the internet with text added, but I like the picture on its own. I think that the colours on the first reproduction are nicer, but then sometimes I think that I prefer the second one - so I posted them both. Which one do you like best?

(Same anon who asked if you're a student of knowledge)
بارک اللہ فيكم يا أخي
Please tell more about what you're studying, books and study routine and your teachers. I'm a sister who is trying to find her way in the ilm community and I have trouble with these things and fataawa etc. My family is not salafi. Asking anonymously because I don't want to send private message. I have taken admission at IOU (Dr Bilal Philips).
وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته
I don't know if you know Arabic or not, but there is an important group of books in the beginning But as a start, reading the books of Ibn Uthayman, such as Sharh Al-Wasitiya, and Explanation of al-Aqeedatul-Hamawiyyah
and Belief in Allah Dr Shaikh ‘Umar Sulaiman al-Ashqar
and the books of Sheikh Tariq Awad Allah in Ulum al-Hadith Another decent start is al-Manhal al-Latif by Muhammad b. ‘Alawi al-Maliki. A modern classic is Taysir Mustalah al-Hadith by Mahmud al-Tahan (which has a commentary called Islah al-Istilah by Tariq Awad Allah). Ibn al-Mulaqqin’s Tadhkirah is another good choice for this stage. However, I think al-Wadih fi Mustalah al-Hadith by shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Shaya’ (professor of hadith at Jami’at al-Imam in Riyadh) is the best introductory work right now. It is clear, comprehensive, and organised with tables and charts which attest to his experience as a teacher as well as an author. It gives the student a solid foundation for further study. Explanation of Riyadh al-Saliheen | Ibn Uthaymeen
in tafsir Tafsir al-Muyasir, al-Muntakhab fi Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim, and the recently published al-Mukhtasar fi al-Tafsir by Markaz al-Tafsir
Hanbali Usul al-Fiqh
The following curriculum works are essential for understanding Hanbali usul:
Ma’alim Usul al-Fiqh by al-Jizani
Al-Qawa’id wa al-Faqa’id al-Usuliyah by Ibn al-Lahham for takhrij al-furu’ ‘ala al-usul
Al-Kawkab al-Munir Sharh Mukhtasar al-Tahrir by Ibn al-Najjar (ed. Muhammad al-Zuhayli)

who are you evaluation
1. The project theme was creating a triptych of self portraits that highlighted an important location, place, and view of yourself side by side. I thought it was a challenging project that pushed us out of our comfort zone.
2. The part of the project that I enjoyed the most was taking self portraits, I found I had a lot of ideas for them and it was fun to execute them and make them stand out more in post production.
3. New techniques I have experienced include working with many objects at once to create a large still life.
4. A technique I would like to develop further is using flash photography in the dark/light painting to create unusual and arresting images.
5. Photographers I researched throughout the project include: Cindy Sherman, Herbert List, Betina La Plante, Munir Alawi (artist), Melati Suryodarmo, Lauren Thompson, Heather Sheehan.
6. Definitely images like the ones I saw from Betina La Plante (half face half other photo) influenced me. Lauren Thompson as well with slow shutter speed capturing movement.
7. The technique I enjoyed the most was shooting my images. Getting things lined up well and making good compositions.
8. I feel the most successful part of my project is the landscape self portrait with a moving picture of me on the phone. I think it has the most meaning of the three images.
9. Problems I encountered in my project: I struggled to shoot the ‘location’ shot as I was hung up on a piece of advice about shooting all your pictures in one room.
10. I decided to step out of the room and shoot it from a different angle - outside the door. This created an interesting image following the theme of photograph within a photograph.
11. Habits of the mind I used throughout my project include: persisting, thinking flexibly, thinking about my thinking, applying past knowledge to new situations.
12. What I would do differently given the chance to complete the project again - I might try to be more creative with where I shoot my images and experiment with multiple locations.
13. I may have a theme of under exposure in my final images, and they could all be sharper.

The Rucellai Madonna by Duccio, 1285, Uffizi, Florence. Commissioned by the Confraternity of the Laudesi, which had a appropriate adherence to the Madonna, for their abbey in Santa Maria Novella. Moved in 1591 to the Rucellai chapel, appropriately its name
Eike Schmidt, the administrator of the Uffizi arcade in Florence, told the columnist on 27 May that he anticipation abounding religious works of art currently in Italy’s museums and food should be alternate to the churches from which they came. He went on to advance that one of the best acclaimed aboriginal medieval works in his gallery, the Rucellai Madonna by Duccio, corrective about 1275, should go aback to its aboriginal home, the Florentine abbey of Santa Maria Novella, from which it was removed in 1948.
This abstraction is allotment of the Uffizi’s acknowledgment to the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis, in which it is cerebration about about-face and the administration of its works of art in adjustment to actualize a “wider” [diffuso] architectonics above the actual bounds of the gallery.
Schmidt conceded that there are advantages to uming art in a museum. For example, at present, the Rucellai Madonna is afraid calm with altarpieces by the two added super-stars of aboriginal medieval Italian painting, Cimabue and Giotto, so that they can be compared with one another, but, he said, the Rucellai Madonna’s absence from Santa Maria Novella takes abroad an capital allotment of its history and meaning.

self portrait research
One artist that I found interesting is Cindy Sherman.
Tumblr media
I like the unavoidable gaze and connection with the sitter, it feels almost confrontational. And many people would consider this sort of outfit and piece of art unusual or weird but she’s confident about it.
Tumblr media
The bold colours in this image don’t really even feel connected to the human reality. It’s very colour coordinated and measured, but so saturated it’s like attacking the viewer with acrylic paint.
Tumblr media
In this image clearly Cindy is pretending to be dead. And it does look almost believable. From this portrait I could take inspiration from the angle she’s laying at, the way she’s looking away from the camera, and how she is positioned in the frame.
I don’t quite have the budget, props or means to truly take inspiration from a Cindy Sherman piece, as they are all very complicated, apart from simpler images such as this:
Tumblr media
I might take inspiration from the ratio this image has been cropped to, as well as the way she is positioned in the frame, and the fact that she’s looking away from the camera.
Tumblr media
This image features double exposure, which is a popular technique in self portraits and one I may experiment with.
In terms of self portraits that may be more reasonable for me to try to take inspiration from, I found photographers such as magnum photographer Herbert List.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This third image looks as though he is pretending the camera took the picture by itself. I like the way that the background is in very soft focus, it has a shallow depth of field. He must be using a long focal length as the immediate foreground of the image is out of focus.
This image by Betina La Plante is very interesting as it is half old photograph and half new. The image appears simple to produce which means it is accessible for me to take ideas from.
Tumblr media
Alternatively there are self portraits where half of the face is art:
Tumblr media
I could do my face emerging from a page of my writing or a drawn self portrait, similar to this:
Tumblr media
This image is by Munir Alawi. ^
I could do a simple reduction on the opacity of a photographic self portrait of me and layer it over an artwork picture.
Tumblr media
I could apply different materials, paints, items on top of a printout of my face.
In terms of specifically looking at self portrait triptychs, one artist I found was  Melati Suryodarmo, who created this really interesting triptych showcasing three different double exposures. It seems to me that it’s the contrast between how her culture expects her to behave and how she feels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These images are by Lauren Thompson, and I find the tactic of only having the central image in focus interesting. It really draws you to the centre image, making it the focal point and leading you to believe it is the strongest representation of herself, with the other two unfocussed and distraught looking images just glimpses into what it’s maybe like inside that composed woman in the middle.
Tumblr media
In this triptych, Heather Sheehan poses with the same prop three times over, showcasing her affiliation with it - it appears she has been working with this item for a long time. She’s bored of it, she’s used to it, it’s a part of her.
